On the relationship between ambient music and Buddhism
Tumblr media
The deep connection between ambient music and Buddhism: Sounds of silence and meditation In recent years, ambient music has received attention for its ability to calm the mind and improve concentration. On the other hand, in Buddhism, meditation has been practiced to calm the mind and aim for enlightenment. Ambient music and Buddhism may seem different at first glance, but they are actually deeply connected.
The common concept of “nothingness” Ambient music is music that focuses more on the texture and spatiality of sounds than on melody and rhythm. The sound image, which flows slowly and without a clear theme or beginning, development, and conclusion, leads the listener's consciousness to a state of openness without binding it to a specific object. On the other hand, in Buddhism, the state of enlightenment, which is free from attachment and earthly desires, is called "nothingness." This does not refer to a state of nothingness, but rather a state in which everything is interconnected. Ambient music and the Buddhist concept of "nothingness" have in common that they both aim to break away from fixed concepts and values and connect with one's true self.
ambient music in meditation Ambient music can also be used as an adjunct to meditation. Its calming effects, clearing away distractions, and increasing concentration can help lead you to a deeper state of meditation. In fact, many Buddhist temples incorporate ambient music during sutra chanting and meditation. Ambient music, combined with the tranquility of the temple, will provide a deeper meditative experience.
Recommended ambient music Ambient music has many different styles depending on the artist. Here we will introduce some artists and works that are closely related to Buddhism.
Brian Eno: An artist known as the founder of ambient music. "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" is a work based on the environmental sounds of airports, and is also popular as meditation music.
Harold Budd: American composer. He creates a tranquil space with delicate sound images using piano and synthesizers. "The Pearl" is known as a work influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.
Steve Roach: American electronic musician. He invites you into a deep meditative experience with his magnificent soundscapes that incorporate environmental sounds and folk music. "Structures from Silence" is one of his masterpieces.
TAKEO SUZUKI: Japanese artist. He creates a meditative space with delicate sound images using synthesizers and percussion. His representative works include "Ambient Buddhism" and "Ambient Buddhism 2." YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/@takeosuzuki_electronic
summary Ambient music and Buddhism have a deep connection through the commonalities of silence and meditation. Ambient music has a calming and focused effect, and can help you take the Buddhist practice of meditation on a deeper level. Please listen to ambient music and experience the Buddhist worldview.
