Wow this is crazy, I cannot believe it! 🤩 I never believed I would be here this day, making this follow forever. I left tumblr for good 2 years ago. I was never going to return. But then quarantine and Merlin happened to me and I was here again. I never thought this place would become again my safe haven, that I would meet so many new amazing friends and reconnect with so many old ones and become a part again of this amazing community. A HUGE shoutout to the Merlin fandom, for accepting me back with open arms after so many years of absence and being my favourite place on tumblr right now. I met so many beautiful people in this fandom and I will always be grateful for everything. Thank you all so much, for making 2020 bearable for me, for liking and reblogging my gifs, for tagging me in your amazing edits, for sending me messages, for becoming my friend, for being cursed with me, for making tumblr a great place to return to. The Good and the Bad: Arrow 8x09 Review (Green Arrow & the Canaries)

Arrow did another backdoor pilot for the spin-off even though 7x16 felt like one,

but it’s clear from this episode things have been… retooled.

Not always for the better. I liked Green Arrow and The Canaries more than I disliked it, but I’m an easy sell. If Olicity’s progeny are available via my television then I’m watching. Period. End of discussion.

There’s good content for the writers to mine, but there’s definitely some kinks to work out.

Doing things a little different with this review. Yes, I can change.

It didn’t feel like a fully fleshed out episode and I have a feeling we’ll be repeating this pilot in some form if Green Arrow and The Canaries is greenlit, so for now we’ll just hit the highlights – the good and the bad.

Let’s dig in…

What I Loved

This is the first episode immediately after Crisis, so we don’t entirely know how the present day is impacted, but the future certainly is bright. Mia and William have grown up in an almost paradise. Star City is the safest city in the country. There’s been no crime for almost twenty years and it’s all thanks to the city’s hero – Oliver Queen.

It’s nice to see Oliver being honored years later by the ungrateful twats of Star City. They are slightly less ungrateful in my eyes. However, it’s even more wonderful to see that Oliver’s children grew up safe, protected, and maybe even a little pampered. It’s everything he wanted for them.

The big stick with this carrot of course is Oliver not being able to raise William and Mia.

Mia Smoak is the princess we were promised and she is ready to ascend the throne. I loved everything about her character.

The alternate timeline/universe (?) has softened Mia. There’s no anger. No dark and twisty past. No hatred of vigilantes. No resentment over lies and betrayals.

Mia knows her father was a hero, but she hasn’t grown up hiding out in a cabin with Felicity. Instead she grew up with William in the Queen Mansion (where she currently resides). On the surface, Mia’s life has been pretty friggin perfect, even if she’s a little adrift. That said, the Grand Canyon sized hole in her life is that her dad is gone.

We have a scantily clad naked Diggle boy and he’s already dropping down on one knee. This show is my crack.

This also means JJ Diggle isn’t evil! Plot twist!! Dun dun DUNNN!!!

Mia says yes after a brief hesitation and the DIGGLE BROTHER LOVE TRIANGLE HAS COMMENCED. I know I’m the only person who wants this love triangle, but I don’t care.

JJ is the “good” brother and Connor isn’t “evil” but he seems like a colossal screw up with questionable facial hair.

But also maybe I like the facial hair?

It’s clear he has an adversarial relationship with Mia, but so many romances have been born from loathing. Enemies to lovers is a classic trope. I’m all in.

Of course, we’re supposed to expect Connor in Mia’s bed since the Season 7 flash forwards more than hinted at a brewing romance between the two,

but instead it is JJ. A plot twist the Olicity fandom called ages ago.

John Jr. is new and improved though. There isn’t much to dislike about this version of him. He’s kind, sweet, sexy, attentive and pulling out expensive jewelry in the first five minutes. What’s not to love? There’s a smol and tol aesthetic happening too. Everyone knows that’s my shipping jam.

Things immediately get rocky though (pun intended). First, JJ gives Mia the Queen family engagement ring.

Mia makes a point of saying it was her mother’s which gives me the feels.

I never had the same issues with Moira’s engagement ring others did, but even I can recognize there’s some bad juju in it

Next, Mia gets her memories back (more on THAT later) and officially remembers her fiancé was a psychopathic killer who ran one of her friends through with the pointy end of a sword. It’s a little difficult to kiss JJ after that visual.

Things don’t get much easier after Mia accuses JJ of being the mastermind behind Bianca Bertinelli’s kidnapping. (Yes, she’s Helena’s daughter). He’s not the kidnapper. All his secrecy revolves around the honeymoon JJ is planning. It does lead to a truly hilarious moment between the two characters.

JJ: Jumping to conclusions is I’m cheating on you not that I’m a kidnapper. For the record, I’m neither.

It’s a heavy moment, but I died. It’s going to be a little hard to pick out cake now.

The scene itself is heartbreaking. Charlie and Kat acted their asses off in it too. JJ thinks Mia doesn’t want to marry him. She hesitated before accepting his proposal (Yes, he noticed that Mia. So did I). JJ believes Mia is commitment phobic. It’s not wildly unlike how Oliver’s story began. Thank God there’s no cheating with siblings though.

Mia is merely struggling with the idea that her fiancé was a cold blooded killer in another world. She just needs some time to… adjust. She’s also a little commitment phobic. After stopping the real bad guys, Mia reassures JJ, but she doesn’t tell him the truth about who she is.

I see your not-so-subtle wink at SmoakNHawke writers. I AM SO HERE FOR THIS.

The truly awesome moment with JJ’s character is when he gets his memories back too. I was not expecting this and was genuinely surprised. Charlie Barnett is a PHENOMENAL actor. He played that scene perfectly.

Giving JJ his memories back is a stroke of genius because now he's a more complicated villain (I hope). He gets to struggle with his love for Mia and his loony tune desire to take over the city.

Katherine McNamara also does a fantastic job of blending the two versions of Mia after she gets her memories back.

She’s reeling from the suffering and loss, but Mia is still our bad ass princess who takes no crap.

She is still every bit the hero Oliver and Felicity raised her to be.

She’s just a little more pragmatic. Her communication skills are much improved. One of the best moments of the episode is when she gets to show up L*urel with her “new” experience.

Mia telling L*urel where to stick it was a long time coming. We had to wait twenty five minutes for it to happen, but it was GLORIOUS when it did.

William is a perfect cupcake, excited to be Mia’s man of honor, but bummed his boyfriend cheated on him. We hate Kevin.

He encourages Mia to join Smoak Tech, but she’s not sold on joining Mama’s company. William running Felicity’s company fills me with a deep and abiding joy.

William Clayton-Harris-Smoak-Queen is perfection from start to finish.

The chemistry between Ben and Kat is so natural. William’s good natured teasing about their “family heirloom” exuded warmth and love.

I adore how comfortable the two characters are now. Erasing William and Mia’s separation is the best thing to come out of Oliver’s Crisis retcon.

ZOE IS ALIVE because I said she would be and I like to get my way.

Din*h owns a bar (Thea’s old club) and lives in the apartment upstairs (Thea and Olicity’s old loft).

She woke up in the future after Oliver’s funeral and discovered she doesn’t exist in 2040. I’m only mildly curious about this. The bigger shock is Din*h is tolerable. She’s compassionate towards Mia and often serves as the peace maker between her and L*urel. She feels like an older and wiser Din*h Dr*ke. More like Season 5 Din*h, but not so angry.

Also, hello that voice? She can be like Lorne on Angel and randomly break out into show tunes. Juliana did a beautiful job.

E2 Oliver cheated on L*urel with Sara too. There is no universe where L*urel & Oliver end up together. Nobody hates L*uriver more than these writers.

What I Hated

L*urel. I hated everything about L*urel.

At first, I thought I was being too sensitive, but after a certain point it was clear she is just an asshole. L*urel being unbearable in Arrow pilots is a tradition apparently.

It starts with how Mia gets her memories back. There were some spoilers out on this, but I wasn’t entirely sure how it would play out onscreen and yeah… total dick move.

L*urel destroys Mia’s life by forcing unbelievably painful memories on her without discussing it with her first. And for what? So, Mia can help L*urel find her kidnapped friend.

Even the newspaper article L*urel drops about the Green Arrow failing the city doesn’t excuse the way she gave Mia her memories back. I understand she is trying to convince Mia to be a superhero, but I feel a more effective approach would have been to sit down, grab a cup of coffee, offer the pros and cons of getting her memories back and then let MIA DECIDE.

L*urel didn’t need to grab her from behind at her graduation/engagement party. It had the uncomfortable vibe of mind rape and no amount of “girl power” makes that okay.

Oh hey - if J'onn J'onzz from Superg*rl is going around and zapping people’s minds without clearing it with them first -

What was with L*urel insulting Mia every two seconds? UGH. Where is that damn bird baton?

There’s a fine line between snark and nasty. L*urel was just nasty.

L*urel decides Mia is a lazy, self absorbed, idiot because she’s not immediately jumping at the chance to be the Green Arrow. She literally blew this kid’s life apart, gives her no time to process, and immediately begins insulting her because she’s not following all of L*urel’s commands.

On what planet does L*urel have any authority over Mia's life?

They have a warm and fuzzy heart to heart about choosing to be a hero to smooth over L*urel’s wildly unpleasant personality, but it’s ludicrous. L*urel didn’t even rate a goodbye from Oliver. I find her suddenly being an expert on what Oliver would want for his daughter pretty tough to swallow.

It’s insane L*urel is judging anyone about anything because SHE IS A MURDERER. But sure, being a socialite is the real crime. Thank goodness L*urel is here to stop all the shopping.

The show was desperate glaze over Bl*ck Sir*n’s history with bizarre explanations.

L*urel: I wasted a lot of time pretending to be something I wasn’t because it was easier.”

So, Bl*ck Sir*n was pretending to be a murderer because it was easier?

That’s not a thing. You don’t pretend to a murderer. You just are one.

Bl*ck Sir*n wasn’t like Oliver Queen. She killed good and innocent people. We’re just supposed to accept she was always a good person simply because she says so? Sorry sweetheart, the evidence does not exist. I would send your ass to prison for a good 25 to life, but the network didn’t ask for my opinion about your participation in the new show. THEY SHOULD HAVE.

Then there’s the way they casually avoid things Bl*ck Sir*n has done.

Din*h: I can let go of the people I lost and mistakes that I made.

Din*h lost her boyfriend because L*urel murdered him. They ate French fries and drank milkshakes in a ten second scene and now we’re supposed to believe they’re best friends. Umm… no. If you want to make this friendship believable don’t pretend their history doesn’t exist. Most of your viewing audience is coming from Arrow. We remember that L*urel killed Dinah’s boyfriend.

L*urel: D you’re up. You ready?

Din*h: Never not.

Ugh. Cringe. Arrow was effortlessly bad ass because Stephen Amell made Oliver Queen look effortlessly bad ass.

The action was show, not tell, and that includes the dialogue. There is no making L*urel and Din*h cool, so just-

They force this “Ra Ra Girl Power” nonsense with clunky lines and empty camaraderie while at the same time; L*urel eviscerates Mia’s life choices by insulting her all hour. If you want to bolster “female relationships” on this network then start with the women treating each other with respect.

There was a criminal lack of William, Zoe and Connor. TERRIBLE DECISION.

Hopefully, this changes dramatically if the show goes to series. This is what I meant by “retooled.” It is clear two different concepts are being slapped together. The one we saw in 7x16 and whatever KC pitched to the network. The biggest flaw in this backdoor pilot is how disjointed it feels.

It’s like there are two shows. Mia has her life with William, Zoe, JJ and Connor and the other show is Din*h and L*urel. It’s similar to Oliver and L*urel/Tommy/Thea versus Diggle/Felicity in the beginning of Arrow, but it feels really unnecessary to make that mistake again. I do not feel Green Arrow and The Canaries is Marc Guggenheim and Beth Schwartz’s vision for what they wanted the spin-off to be and it is GLARINGLY obvious.

No mention of Felicity or Diggle. Yes, I understand why. We have to watch the Arrow series finale to find out what happens to our beloved characters. Mia and William never mentioning Felicity and JJ and Connor never mentioning Diggle & Lyla is WEIRD. Particularly since it was Mia’s graduation and her engagement party with JJ.

The adversarial relationship between Mia and L*urel is a wise choice given how KC and Katherine McNamara interact online with each other. Or don’t as the case may be.

What is happening with L*urel's boots? Are there bombs attached to them or something?

The lipsticks on L*urel and Din*h are not good. There's a lot of eye makeup happening too. Let's tone it down makeup department.

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Remember this? Yeah, me neither, so there’s a refresher at the beginning.

You fall asleep at some point, because when the officer who had spoken to the flogger calls out for, “Shelley King,” something bony shifts under your cheek. You blink the last of the sleep out of your eyes just in time to hear your own name being called. An old man with kinder eyes than you’d expect to see on a cop clears his throat, and you move your head off Shelley’s shoulder.

“See you when I get out,” you say as you stand, but it either comes out garbled because you’re tired, or he’s not listening, because he doesn’t look at you before you’re both whisked inside your respective interrogation rooms.

“Quinn,” the cop says as he pushes a pile of clean clothes at you, “my name’s Harry Clayton, you can call me Harry.”

“Mr. Clayton,” you just barely nod. You don’t take the clothes, because fuck cops, seriously.

The corners of his mouth twitches up, but all he says is, “Can you tell me how you and Mr. King know each other?”

“He was a customer. He ordered some drinks, and then he defended me when the gunman demanded information about my coworker.” You don’t know what story he’s hoping to hear, but you’re going to defend Shelley until you leave.

“What’s your coworker's name?”

“Robin Choi.”

That makes him pause for entirely too long. You feel a pang of worry for Robin. You don’t know much about their history, but anything that makes the police remember your name can only be bad.

You lean forward. “Are they okay?”

“I’ll try to keep them that way,” Harry says. “So, the man threatened you, and then what happened?”

“Shelley stood up and told him to back off, only because he could tell I was scared.”

“Mr. King engaged him in a fight?”

“First, he motioned for everyone at his table to leave, and then everybody in the bar left. I got stuck behind the bar because I was shaking too hard to open the side latch. The gunman threatened me, and then Sh-Mr. King started to fight him.”

“So, when you picked up the broken glass to stab the gunman, it was to defend Mr. King?”

“Yes, and as soon as Mr. King pushed him off, we ran to the door.”

“And this is when, according to multiple eye-witnesses, an American tourist took a knife out of their purse, stabbed the gunman in the throat and walked away.”

You nod. “Pretty much.”

“And you didn’t know this tourist?”

“I think I served them at the bar, but I’m not sure. I think they got involved because they know what a gunshot sounds like. You know how America is.”

“That I most unfortunately do,” Harry sighs. “Well, you’re free to go. I’ll call you if I need any more information. Do you have any questions for me?”

“Am I or Robin in danger?”

“Not if I have anything to do about it,” there’s a look in his eyes that you would call anger if you hadn’t seen it on Shelley’s face earlier.

“That's not a no,” you point out.

“No, it isn’t,” Harry sighs as he out a card from his pocket. He puts it on top of the clothes that he pushes closer to you before standing. “If you or Robin run into any more men with guns, give me a call. And for god’s sake, when someone tells you to run away from a man making threats, listen to him!”

You shoot Harry a look. “I don’t leave people behind to get hurt.”

“God save me from idiots,” Harry mutters as he closes the door behind him.

You change into the clothes he gave you, which fit just as poorly as you expected. But the oversized green shirt and the undersized jean shorts aren’t soaked in blood, even if you do have to leave the latter unbuttoned. You leave your work clothes in the evidence bag, exit the interrogation room, and walk toward the one Shelley had been in. It’s empty, he didn’t wait for you.

You barely know him, he’s just some guy, you shouldn’t be panicking like this just because you don’t know where he is. You just dropped your bloody clothes off at the police station, so there’s no blood on the back of your shirt, there’s no one yelling at you, you’re looking at the phone you pulled out of your pocket

You take out your phone to call for a ride, but no sooner have you walked out the station door than you see him sitting in his car, moving a pile of books off the passenger seat and onto the floor. You get in

“You mind dropping me off at a coffee shop before we go home?” you ask when he starts the engine.

“The last few hours not exciting enough to keep you up?” Shelley quips.

It’s a pretty funny joke, but you don’t feel like laughing. “I’m not going there for coffee, but chamomile tea will get me pretty close.”

“There’s a brunch bar at the foot of Panda Hill with good bagels,” you say the first place that comes to mind, then you wince when you remember how far away it is.

Strangely enough, this actually brings a smile to Shelley’s face. “I love Panda Hill,” he says as he starts his car. “I’ve always wanted to go stargazing there, ever since I was a kid.”

Now you’re interested, too. “So you know all the constellations?”

Shelley laughs a little. “No,” he gets a faraway look on his face, “I’d draw lines between the stars and pretend they were the characters in whatever story I was reading at the time.”

You look at the stack of books by your feet, which run the gamut from ancient Egyptian mythology to a comic book at the topic, and you’re a little ashamed at how surprised you are. You hadn’t expected a man with a beard like Shelley’s to be so well-read. Bookish, after all, wasn’t actually a visual term.

“Only if you want,” Shelley says awkwardly.

Oh shit, you hadn’t been talking. “I would love to,” you say quickly.

The smile he gives you is almost pathetically grateful. There’s something behind his love for stargazing, but you don’t want to ask. Either he’ll tell you, or he won’t.

“I pretty much only read comic books as a kid,” you confess. “I don’t know a lot about actual stories.”

“Comic books are real stories,” it’s nice of him to pretend you’re not an idiot. “And good stories at that, or there wouldn’t be so many people who read them.”

“You sound like my grandmother,” you smile at him. “She used to defend me when my parents tried to throw my comics away.” You swear you can feel wizened hands stroking your hair, telling you, “Heroes are just the stories that find you at the right time.”

“You could make an argument that comic book heroes are just mythological gods adapted for the modern age,” Shelley’s voice draws you out of your nostalgia. “The old gods weren’t perfect, they had all the trappings of humanity, including flaws. They just also happened to have earth-shattering, mind-bending powers.”

You snicker. “I actually learned the Greek gods from Wonder Woman comics.”

“Oh?” he smiles at you, increasing the temperature inside the car. “Tell me, is Wonder Woman more like Hera, or Artemis?”

“Hera,” you say confidently, “there’s already a Wonder Woman character named Artemis.”

“Huh, I guess I should read the comics.”

“I can lend you some, my parents didn’t manage to throw all my comics out.”

He freezes for a second in the middle of turning his engine off.

“Ah, jeez,” you give him a hug, more to avoid seeing his sad eyes than because you need one. Not that the feeling of his arms around you isn’t very, very pleasant. “I’m fine, really. It was a long time ago.”

“That just means you were treated badly when you were younger,” he says into your shoulder.

“It’s fine,” you wiggle a little, and he lets go immediately. “Please don’t let it bother you. It doesn’t bother me.”

He makes a sound that you decide to take as acquiescence, and the two of you walk into the brunch bar. When he’s done ordering, he steps aside and nods for you to order. You consider shaking your head, but you remember how hurt he looked back in the car. Maybe helping you get some food will soothe him.

As soon as you’re done ordering, you sit down in a seat next to Shelley, and wake up with a drool-covered hand, with your bagel and tea in front of you. Shelley grins and moves his half-finished plate with a single egg, pancake, and two slices of bacon, in front of you.

“Nah,” you motion to your bagel, “this is enough.”

He frowns. “I don’t want you to be hungry.”

You open your mouth to tell him that you can’t eat when you’re hungry, but the growl of your stomach interrupts you, and you realize that you’re not actually stressed at all. Not since you left the police station have you actually thought about the events of just a few hours ago.

“Ha,” Shelley say smugly, nudging the plate until it hits the end of your nose.

“I’ll finish the eggs, but I’ve got a bagel, so you eat the rest,” you say, smearing the runny yolk on your bagel. “I’m very particular about my pancakes and bacon, so I usually don’t eat them unless I know the cook is very good.”

“Remind me to make you some,” Shelley says before shoving a forkful of syrup-soaked pancake in his mouth.

Your first instinct is to tell him he doesn’t have to, but despite only having met earlier that night, you know him well enough to know he would only insist. “You like cooking, then?” you say instead.

“I love it.” Shelley chews the rest of his food without speaking, like he’s lost in thought. “It makes me feel like I’m taking care of people,” he says slowly, “when I feed them.”

You want to say something about people with savior complexes, so you stick the last of the bagel in your mouth until the urge passes. “Come on, let’s go up the hill and look at the stars. You can tell me all about those constellations you made up.”

A Fan Review of Stan Lee’s Lucky Man

or ... A Gift That Should Have Never Been Given

I’ve had a ton of fun promoting this terrible show and now that it’s over, I thought I’ve give a quick review on what I thought of it overall.

So, TL;DR: Overall Score: D+

Character Consistency: C-

Narrative Strength: F

Acting: B

Re-watchability: Minimal.

For some reason, people think that if a show/movie is based on a comic book, that excuses it from the same scrutiny that other fictional works receive. Sorry, but this is actually very far from the case. In fact, comic readers are often used to dramatically higher standards for plot, narrative, character development than most of the subpar movies and TV shows that find their way into production these days.

In Short: Lucky Man, just because you were based on a comic, does not excuse you from the most basic plot holes which abounded within your meagerly meandering narrative.

The Good:

Elizabeth Gray (Neve McIntosh):

I enjoyed this actress and her character’s arc. At first, you’re not sure what to make of her, but she proves that she’s a human being and not just a caricature of a strong female or a beautiful female. She makes mistakes and then she seeks to correct them. I liked this character a lot. She grew and it was consistent and believable.

Samuel Blake (Rupert Penry-Jones):

No, I’m not biased. Rupert is an exceptional actor, otherwise he wouldn’t be one of my favorites and this role was no different. Regardless of how terrible the writing was, he was splendid. Charismatic and likeably sinister. I started to root for the bad guy at some point mid-season, and no, not just because he’s Rupert (I never rooted for Clive reader ... not even once. He was such a asshole.)

His sudden reversal in the last episode was more than disappointing though. They’d set up the villain to be very, very principled. In fact, that was his most important quality and then, in the final episode, they completely reversed that? In the end though, Samuel Blake was one of the best things in this season.

The Cinematography:

The angles. The shots. The lighting. The costumes. They were all lovely. Consistently so. I enjoyed how good Lucky Man looked. The crew is phenomenal. They should have taken the writers’ salaries and divided it up to the cast & crew. They deserved ALL of the success of Lucky Man.

The Locations:

They really made London look incredible, but something has been bothering me quite a bit. Did they really need to fly to Hong Kong to film? There were very few shots that even gave hints that they were there and honestly, they could have cgi’d in most of that stuff. Clearly they were more focused on having fun filming than actually making a good show.

The Bad:

Suri Chohan (Amara Karan):

Good lord, this character was a brick. I felt nothing for her and I usually relate quite a bit to spunky, nerdy little sidekicks. She was dumb at every corner. Everyone got the drop on her. She was hyper emotional. She tried to sleep with the tall detective ... randomly.

I’m sorry, but she didn’t seem like a real person at all to me. She was a caricature of some ideal Mary Sue. Everyone loves Chohan. Chohan is morally and ethically perfect. Yeah ... no. I’ve better things to do than watch a character I cannot relate to in any way, shape, or form.

Harry Clayton (James Nesbitt):

James Nesbitt is an incredible actor, but Harry Clayton was such a miserable character that I didn’t care if he lived or died. He killed so many people. He was overly arrogant. I didn’t care about this character at all. In the later part of the season, I started to fast forward through most of his scenes.

The Narrative:

This was by far the worst aspect of the show. Nothing ever really made sense. Nothing. It was a strange combination of scenes people wanted to shoot coupled together loosely with vague reasons and meandering dialogue and unbelievable character motivations.

The What-The-Fuck:

Eve Alexandri (Sienna Guillory):

I totally understand being pissed at Harry because he let you die. I totally get that angle and they could have used that beautifully. They could have built a narrative around her that reinforced her falling for Blake, but they didn’t. They didn’t even bother.

She’d been brought up to protect the bracelets and it took Blake less than a day to tear her down? Absolute bullshit.

Blake kidnaps her, after she said she would listen to him, and throws her off a bridge (which she nearly dies from), and she forgives him and not Harry? Absolute bullshit.

So, she will forgive an hot stranger from trying to kill her, but she won’t forgive her best friend who did so to save another life? Absolute bullshit.

And then, in a matter of days (or weeks?), Blake has turned her into a ruthless killer and she convinces him to kill his entire family in front of her? Yeah, what?

She has no principles. No loyalties. No ethics. She has a poorly fabricated fight with Harry and then runs to Blake. After one fight. One. She can be turned away from her entire life’s goal because Blake winks at her? And then, in the end, Blake says ONE mean thing to her and she tries to kill him. And then, in the end, she turns on Blake suddenly. “OH NO! NOT THAT MUCH INNOCENT BLOOD!”

Absolute bullshit.

What a miserable and unbelievable character.

A scantly clad Samuel Blake:

Ok ok ok. Yeah, this is absolutely a “what-the-fuck” topic. As much as I enjoyed seeing him shirtless (and pants-less) ... over and over and over again, it was absolutely pointless and shouldn’t have been in the show. EVEN THOUGH I FUCKING LOVED IT: That whole ... “I’m gonna walk through the morgue naked.” scene was unnecessary and it really did detract from the story. Why didn’t he just take the doctor’s clothes? Seriously. He was heading out to meet Eve and he just happens across some pants ... he would have taken the Pathologist’s pants. Anyone who argues otherwise is an idiot.

This was such blatant fan baiting / fan service.

A side rant here: As a fan of RPJ, this nudity really should have been fun, but the hardest part of it was the fact that there’s a small but very vocal minority of Rupert’s fan base which consider themselves his Morality Police. It’s really just a handful of people using multiple accounts to fabricate dialogue, in an attempt to shame him (mind you, by directly tagging him on Twitter), on an almost daily basis, over his body. They also shame fans for appreciating his body and no one better find him sexually attractive or you will be targeted.

Plot Holes:

I’m just gonna go over the holes in 3x08. There are holes in EVERY episode, but I’ll focus on the last one because I want to push everything about this show out of my mind now.

Wasn’t Blake a drug addict?

At some point, I’m convinced the writers changed and they completely forgot about the most fundamental flaw that we’ve been given about Samuel.

In the last two episodes, that was just gone. Since it was such an important aspect that they were setting up in the beginning, you’d think that it would come into play at some point in the finale. Withdraw or making him entirely numb again (Like in Sam and Harry’s first fight). It should have come full circle. It should have played SOME part in his demise, but it didn’t. In fact, there was no point to it at all.

It didn’t make him more or less evil. It didn’t make him more or less relatable. They didn’t use it in a way to explain anything. Not his actions or his motivations. It was complexity that was added as a superficial trait and then not used in the narrative at all.

Shameful writing.

Wasn’t Blake the head of a massive Chinese mafia?

At some point, they completely forgot about the Wu Chi. His prison fight was fabricated ahead of time and the Snake Hands carried out his instructions, and then ... just vanished. He is supposed to be the head of a massive Chinese mafia and yet, they all just vanished.

Any Wu Chi guards at his factory? Nope. Of course not, otherwise how would Harry just sneak in at the end. Any Wu Chi guards helping him infiltrate Madame Cheng’s stronghold? Nope. I ... guess ... not? Did they run out of money for asian extras?

Couldn’t they have scrubbed the unnecessary trip to Hong Kong to pay for more extras?

So, what was the point of him being a Dragon Head again?

In the end, there was no point.

Blake was all about planning ahead and he didn’t steal the Uranium BEFORE he got himself purposefully arrested?

Don’t even get me started on the plot from 3x06. Blake’s plan was to get arrested, fake his death, and break out? Even the whole “waking up in the morgue” thing didn’t make sense. Why didn’t Eve get his body out? Why was she just waiting outside for him?! Ugh, I digress ... focus on 3x08, focus on just 3x08 ...

So Blake’s been setting up this fission chamber for a while, right? He brags about buying that factory years earlier in preparation. In fact, he’s even got a handful of handy scientists to get it all up for him. How clever, I guess? But, he never bothered getting the Uranium before he purposefully got himself arrested? His entire plan hinged on being able to get his hands on MOTHER FUCKING URANIUM ... and he didn’t plan ahead for that ... at all? His entirely plan was to wait until his access was revoked and then find someone to torture the information out of?

That’s ... uh ... really, really weak. This entire fission / nuclear thing seemed like an afterthought in the writing room when they realized they’d written themselves into a corner.

Writer 1: Ah shit. How is Blake even gonna destroy them? It doesn’t make sense that the Torches would bring the forging weapons to London. They had to have hidden them, right?

Writer 2: *having just watched The Strain* I KNOW! Let’s have him NUKE THEM!

Seriously, Harry basically killed that poor scientist.

This wasn’t a plot hole, but it seriously bothered me. You know that man. The one he strangely head butted. The one messing with the fission machine. Was the man even evil? Did he know what he was hired to do? Did he know that the controlled fission reaction was to destroy magical braclets and the chain reaction would melt down and likely kill him and thousands of people? Doesn’t matter, he wasn’t useful to the plot, so Harry just ... killed him.

How did Harry know how to remove the Uranium?

He just walks over, reaching in to the machine, turns it and pulls it out. He didn’t even know what it looked like. I guess he was just ... lucky? Pfffttt. Whatever. It’s just a little thing, but it’s still fucking lazy.

Why wasn’t Blake armed? What the fuck was he doing?

There’s simply no way that Blake would have been walking around the factory without his gun. He would have just shot Harry from above. And before anyone says: He wouldn’t risk the fission machine! He was wearing the bracelet.

This was so fabricated. Was he pooping or something and that’s why he set his gun down on the desk?

And again, why didn’t he have Wu Chi guards ... or even a surveillance system set up? There’s NO WAY that place didn’t have security if he had a fission machine INSTALLED in it. And he already said he’d owned it from several years.

Seriously? WTF Lucky Man.

Why didn’t Blake notice Eve had escaped?

She was tied to the fission machine and he didn’t even notice she was gone. Ok then ... maybe it was because he was high?! They didn’t even bother to address it at all. Not to mention the fact that ... wasn’t it unlucky to Blake for Eve to have escaped? Wasn’t he wearing the bracelet?

Also, wasn’t it unlucky for Eve to have put the other one on him? Shouldn’t she have tripped or something? Shouldn’t he have been able to stop her BECAUSE of the bracelet he was already wearing?!

Writers: Create the rules for your world and then stick to them. Don’t change things because you want a scene to play out a specific way. You make the rules, so stick to them.

Harry’s hiding in his brother’s flat.

The entire country is on the lookout for Harry and Blake. He’s considered a domestic terrorist at this point and he’s hiding ... in his brother’s flat.

Where the fuck is Mi5?! Seriously, no. This is SO dumb. FFS.

No one’s tracking his brother or his brother’s phone. No one’s bothering with anything. Harry keeps walking out into public. He approaches the Security Guards in the URANIUM shipment (armed guards), and even tells them HIS NAME. I find it unlikely that security professionals wouldn’t have been even MORE briefed on him than the general public (which already was).

Eve was pregnant.

I guess this was a poor attempt to explain away her sudden motivational shift, but it was so contrived.

So what? Samuel forgot to wrap it? Fucking unlikely, don’t you think? Was he super, super high one night or something? Because, you’ve shown us he’s incredibly pedantic and he plans everything TO A TEE.

I guess Eve forgot she wasn’t on birth control either? Maybe she was super high too, I guess?

Maybe the condom broke and it just slipped Blake’s mind? Given, unplanned pregnancies obviously occur, but I find it unbelievable that it would happen between these two characters as you’ve presented them to us.

Also, how long were they even together? Was it days or was it weeks?

In the end, she was the character I felt should have gotten her just deserts MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE and yet, she lived. She was inconsistent, without loyalty or morals or ethics, and she gets to live. Thanks Lucky Man.

So ... To Summarize:

Lucky Man wasn’t a good show, but it was a hell of a guilty pleasure and I’m actually gutted it’s over, because I loved watching Rupert work again and hot damn, did Mr. Penry-Jones look smashing in it (as always).

An Introduction to Jean Pigozzi

“When I started, everyone thought that I was an idiot. But now many museums - like Pompidou, Tate, Metropolitan in New York, Los Angeles County Museum - they all want to do shows from my collection,” explains French-born Italian collector Jean Pigozzi in 2016, reacting to the rise in popularity and interest in Contemporary African art. At sixty-four years old, Pigozzi has amassed over 10,000 works of Contemporary African art with a particular focus on artists who live and work in sub-Saharan Africa. Pigozzi’s collection is different from other collections of Contemporary African art (such as the Zeitz collection) which include works by artists who may not be currently living and working in Africa and which feature artists from all different parts of the continent. What is not different, however, is Pigozzi’s desire to help African artists to share their stories with the world. Although his collection does not have a permanent museum or location where it can be shown altogether, the works are frequently on loan to prestigious museums internationally and featured in exhibitions worldwide.

Pigozzi was an artist before he ever became an art collector; he discovered photography at a young age as a way to capture the world around him and express himself without extensive writing, which he struggled with due to dyslexia. Growing up in what he calls a “typical European bourgeois” household, the young aficionado regularly attended art museums with his mother, and his parents even had a modest collection of Impressionist works. It was not until the 1970s, when he attended Harvard University in the United States, however, that Pigozzi exposed himself to art that was more avant-garde. Pigozzi recalls spending weekends in New York visiting MoMA, the Whitney, and galleries downtown. Pigozzi found the art around him fascinating: “It was all so exciting,” he said. “This was the time of Conceptual Art and Minimalism; Carl Andre and Sol LeWitt.” His first purchase was a small Sol LeWitt drawing. At age twenty one, Pigozzi inherited his father’s fortune and became wealthy enough to enjoy a life of leisure dedicated to following his passions - including his burgeoning interest in art - wherever they led him.

In 1989, Pigozzi discovered Contemporary African art when he attended the well-known, yet controversial, exhibition Magiciens de la terre at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The exhibition, which is seen as one of the major turning points for the art world’s globalization, featured works by more than 100 artists from 50 countries, half of which were so-called “non-Western.” Upon seeing the show, Pigozzi was struck by the creativity of the African artists whose works were featured. Pigozzi was not able to purchase the works in the show, which included those by now relatively more well-known Contemporary African artists Bodys Isek Kingelez and Chéri Samba, because they were owned by a French television station. However, Pigozzi was introduced to André Magnin, who helped curate the show, and he became Pigozzi’s advisor as he began to collect Contemporary African art. Most of the works that the collector has acquired were purchased directly from the artists themselves, and many of them were discovered by Magnin through his journeys into Africa scouting for artistic talent.

While Pigozzi himself has never been to Africa, he remains committed to meeting and talking with the artists whose work he collects, finding collectors who do not do so to be more vulnerable to the tall tales sometimes told by art world professionals when trying to make a sale. Among the 71 artists listed on Pigozzi’s collection website, only some of them have been featured in gallery or museum shows - lending itself well to the interpretation that Pigozzi enjoys discovering new artists. Pigozzi has been credited for essentially launching the careers of artists in his collection who do have more art world visibility. For instance, journalist Tess Thackara argues: “Without Pigozzi’s patronage, it’s easy to imagine that [Kingelez] would never have made it onto the MoMA’s walls; the high-profile collector has undeniably brought visibility to Kingelez’s work and played a crucial role in its preservation.”

When he talks about his motives for collecting the art that he does, Pigozzi never talks about financial viability, stability or even potential to produce any sort of profit. In fact, Pigozzi believes that anyone viewing his collection through a financial lens would see it as a “mistake,” with his most valuable paintings being worth $100,000 at maximum, according to the collector - a small amount of money compared to the millions of dollars that Warhol’s and Basquiat’s achieve at auction. But, Pigozzi does not view his works through a financial lens, explaining that while his choice of category may not make sense of a collector interested in making a long-term profit off his works, it makes sense for Pigozzi because he feels he occupies an interesting and unique niche within the art world.

Artworks from The Contemporary African Art Collection (CAAC), which is what Pigozzi calls his collection, have been featured in what one might argue to be every important exhibition of Contemporary African Art in major art institutions in 2018, including Romuald Hazoumè at Gagosian, Park & 75, New York; Platform: Barthélémy Toguo: The Beauty of Our Voice at the Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, New York; and Bodys Isek Kingelez: City of Dreams at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. All of those exhibitions have gotten major press coverage, including mentions or full articles in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, TIME, and Forbes.

In terms of his plans for the future, Pigozzi has expressed a desire to contain his collection within one place and make it available to the public without having to be dispersed among various museums. “It would be sad if 30 years of work disappeared, and the 10,000-strong collection was dispersed,” Pigozzi laments. Yet, Pigozzi realizes that he may not have the resources to put all of his art in one place right now - at least not in a place that he himself funds. “If I [were] Bill Gates,” he says, “I would build a museum. But I’m not Bill Gates. So, I’m open to suggestions,” Pigozzi discloses in an interview with an implied sense of humor. In the meantime, viewing sublime works from Pigozzi’s collection, like the imaginative Bodys Isek Kingelez’s utopian city sculptures at MoMA, is not a bad option for those of us interested in unveiling the stories that Pigozzi readily makes available to the art-viewing public.

After the high-flying stoners (Kal Penn, John Cho) try to smuggle a bong aboard a flight to Amsterdam, the two find themselves in jail on charges of terrorism. After making an amazing escape, Harold and Kumar flee to Texas by way of Florida, where they hope to convince Harold's well-connected friend (Eric Winter) to help them out of their predicament. The problem is, Harold's pal is about to marry Kumar's ex-sweetie (Danneel Harris). At the airport, Kumar argues with a TSA agent for searching him “because of the color of his skin” despite the agent being black. The duo encounter Kumar's ex-girlfriend Vanessa Fanning, who is engaged to Colton Graham, a college friend of Harold's whose family has political connections. The plane passengers mistake Kumar's bong for a bomb and the duo are apprehended by sky marshals. Ron Fox, a neurotic and extremely racist Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, believes the duo are agents of a joint Al-Qaeda and North Korean conspiracy and send them to Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba. After narrowly avoiding a sexual assault by a guard at the detention camp, Harold and Kumar escape and board a Cuban refugee boat to Miami, Florida where they begin their trek to Texas, hoping Colton can clear their names. Harold and Kumar endure several misadventures on their way to Texas, such as staying at the home of an incestuous sibling couple and their inbred son; escaping a Ku Klux Klan rally; and visiting a brothel with Neil Patrick Harris, who helps them evade capture from Fox but is shot. When they reach Texas, Colton agrees to help exonerate the duo. However, upon seeing Kumar reconnect with Vanessa, Colton instead delivers Harold and Kumar to Fox. On the flight back to Cuba, Harold and Kumar subdue Fox's men. When Fox tries confronting them, he is knocked out by Dr. John Beecher (the Vice Chairman of the NSA) after Fox repeatedly treated him poorly. Dr. Beecher accidentally loses his footing, opens a door and falls to his death. Harold and Kumar escape via parachute, and Fox falls to his death while pursuing them. Harold and Kumar land in President George W. Bush's estate. After smoking cannabis with Harold and Kumar, Bush pardons them. Harold and Kumar are escorted to Vanessa and Colton's wedding by the Secret Service. They then expose Colton's betrayal to Vanessa and the guests. Colton attempts to attack them, but Harold punches him out. Kumar consoles a furious Vanessa by reciting a poem he wrote for her in college; they reconcile. Harold, Kumar, and Vanessa travel to Amsterdam where Harold finds Maria, and the couples happily tour the city together while getting high on cannabis. 2019 Academy Award Best Picture Nominees Guide For Those Who Haven’t Actually Watched Them

It’s the 91st time Hollywood comes together to pat themselves on the back and this year marks the 5th time I’m bringing you the rundown of every Best Picture nominee so that you aren’t the “goddamn idiot” someone at your Oscars party is referring to when they ask, “Who invited this goddamn idiot?” Only, as in 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014 (check out the hyperlinks for previous years’ rundowns - and likely some jokes that don’t age very well) - this is all based on the name of the film, the poster for the movie, or things I’ve heard while flipping past Extra or E! So take it all in and enjoy my tips on things to say to other guests so that your party has an ending that is more like Ally’s and less like Jackson’s!

Black Panther

After Creed loses in embarrassing fashion to Ivan Drago’s son, he tats up, grows that hair out, and heads to outer space. After landing on a planet right between the planet from Avatar and Naboo, pissy Creed picks a fight with a space prince who was bit by a radioactive space panther in the movie that had audiences saying, “I bet Forest Whitaker is in this movie. How is Forest Whitaker not in this movie? I’m honestly shocked that Forest Whitaker is not...oh, yup, there he is.”

In this sexual thriller, we see the raw, animal side of Kermit the Frog as he provides details from his Little Green Book of every single Muppet he’s fucked. I’m also your partner,” then finally an old drunk one in his 70′s hobbles up and says, “I’m Stephen Dorff and I too am your partner!”

Mahershala Ali generally tried to avoid Viggo Mortensen, who continually would run up saying, “Dude, Mahersh! We have to get matching tattoos of the number two - for the two of us to commemorate this journey that we’re on together. It’s what you do with your cast mates!” When Mahershala would decline but say it was nice what Viggo and the cast of the Lord of the Rings trilogy did together, Viggo would walk off grumbling, “Hidalgo got a tattoo with me...”

Unable to shake his Saturday Night Live roots, Adam McKay decided to insert a scene late in the movie where - unannounced - the real Dick Cheney walks in to surprised applause from the audience and Christian Bale acts flustered before stammering out that it is an honor to meet him. Cheney pauses for the awkward “oh my god, can you believe this” murmur to die down in the audience and then stiffly delivers, “You know, Christian, you could have just worn a fat suit for this role.” The audience erases all memory of the terrible atrocities that the man has committed during his lifetime and erupts into wild clapping and bark-laughing like seals while Christian and the rest of the cast just have to hand it to the guy for being such a good sport about it all.

Dick Cheney is just happy that A Star Is Born is in the field this year so that in defiance of Vice he also doesn’t have to root for any movies about gay guys, black people, immigrants, or foreigners.

While watching the film, Laura Bush continually had to remind a startled and frightened George W. that no, he was not trapped up in the big movie screen.
