In an undated letter written in the late 1950s, reproduced in THE LETTERS OF JRR TOLKIEN, Tolkien alludes to the legal difficulties Sam faced after returning from the Grey Havens at the end of LORD OF THE RINGS:
When Master Samwise reported the ‘departure over Sea’ of Bilbo (and Frodo) in 1421, it was still held impossible to presume death; and when Master Samwise became Mayor in 1427, a rule was made that: ‘if any inhabitant of the Shire shall pass over Sea in the presence of a reliable witness, with the expressed intention not to return, or in circumstances plainly implying such an intention, he or she shall be deemed to have relinquished all titles rights or properties previously held or occupied, and the heir or heirs thereof shall forthwith enter into possession of these titles, rights, or properties, as is directed by established custom, or by the will and disposition of the departed, as the case may require.’
You can see how the residents of Hobbiton might have seen Sam's return as the premise of a kind of Agatha Christie mystery plot: favorite servant of eccentric middle-aged local resident departs on an unexpected journey with his master; returns home alone two weeks later; and then conveniently produces a copy of said eccentric local resident's new will, naming the servant the heir to all his property — and the only account the servant can offer of his master's whereabouts is a preposterous story about Elves. Suspicious! Very suspicious indeed!

Milestone Monday
March 25th is Tolkien Reading Day, a day to honor the literary prowess of J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) author of acclaimed high fantasy novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien has shared that the seeds of inspiration for his novels came from his childhood fascination and experimentation with constructed language and a 1911 Summer holiday hiking through Switzerland. Roughly fourteen years after his Swiss adventure, Tolkien would write The Hobbit and the first two volumes of Lord of the Rings while teaching in Oxford.
Stepping slightly away from Tolkien’s novels, today we’re digging into our broadside collection and sharing Bilbo’s Last Song (At Grey Havens), a poem about leaving Middle-Earth. It first appeared, as seen here, as a poster published in 1974 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd., the original English publisher of his famous novels, with illustrations by Pauline Baynes (1922-2008), who illustrated many of Tolkien's publications. Chronologically, the poem takes place at the end of the last volume of Lord of the Rings, however it was never included in the series.

It had been about 8 months since you and the others arrived at the Safe Haven. When the group arrived they all had a tough time adjusting to a new routine, including you. It was hard for everyone to forget about everything and start over from scratch.
In addition to that, Newt’s death was very miserable. His death affected Thomas and Minho the most, they were the trio that helped you and the rest of the gladers escape the maze, and WICKED.
When the group first arrived you all quickly got to work on building huts. Unlike the glade, the island has fewer jobs. The most popular being Builders Doctors, Gardners.
You chose to work in the gardens mostly because you like to be hands-on, working outside is also a bonus since you didn't want to be stuck inside for hours.
On the other hand, Minho works as a builder. You don't really know why but it's not like there's a job as a runner.
The sun was beginning to set when you made your way back to you and Minho’s hut when you were stopped by Brenda. She was walking towards you with a smile on her face.
“Minho said to meet him at the beach,” She spoke before quickly running away.
You stand there confused but you dismiss the behavior.
You headed to the hut first to get cleaned up before you went to the beach.
You walked to the beach not knowing what to expect, but now that you had time to look back on the day you noticed that Brenda wasn't the only one acting weird.
Sonya, who worked with you in the gardens, had been smiling at you a lot and kept asking you what you were doing today.
Now that you noticed all the weird behavior, one question was now in your head.
What do they know that they're not telling you?
That question led you to think about Minho.
Why does he want you to meet him at the beach?
You two would typically meet in your hut and talk about your day before dozing off to sleep but today was different.
。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
You finally made it to the beach, shoving your thoughts to the back of your head.
Your eyes had been trained on your feet while you were deep in thought but when you finally looked up, you saw a blanket on the sand with two plates of food and two glasses full of what you assumed was juice.
Next to the blanket was Minho.
His hair was done nicely and he was dressed neatly in black pants and a clean white shirt, holding a bouquet of roses, your favorite.
You were amazed, stunned.
You then realize you hadn't said anything since you saw him, you walk towards him wrapping your arms around his neck.
His arms instantly wrap around your waist. You take a moment to admire everything he'd done for you.
You pulled away reluctantly.
“What is all this?”
“I thought we could have a little date to get our minds off things,” he spoke, handing the flowers to you followed by a kiss on the cheek.
He led you to the blanket, a few steps away from him. He sits down, holding his hand out for you.
You take it, sitting down next to him on the blanket.
“I wasn't expecting this..” you said, setting down the flowers.
“That’s because I made sure you didn't find out.”
“I was actually suspicious of Sonya and Brenda.”
He looked at you waiting for you to continue.
“They were acting weird, Sonya kept smiling at me and asking me what I was doing today.” you laughed.
“I only told them so they could help me plan this,” he said, shaking his head with a smile on his face.
“I guess even someone as amazing as you would need
help sometimes”
“I do need help on rare occasions such as this one”
You laugh nodding your head, you feel eyes on you.
You raised your head to look at Minho but he already staring at you, smiling.
“You’re beautiful,” he said.
You turned away, feeling your cheeks heat up.
Of those 8 months you were here you and Minho had dated for 7 of those months. You could easily said those were the best 7 months of your life.
Minho was the sweetest boyfriend you could ever ask for. Throughout the day he would occasionally come to the gardens to check on you.
He's very touchy (which you love), he always gives you hugs and kisses and well the point is he's an amazing boyfriend.
Minho convinces you to take your shoes off and go into the edge of the water.
“Minho stop!” you said between laughter. He wouldn't stop splashing you with water.
You made a joke and now you regret it as you are being sprayed with water.
After a while, you were starting to get tired.
“I'm going to sit down for a second,” you said walking to the blanket.
“Hold on, you have something in your hair,” he said, stopping you.
“What? Where?” you go to touch your hair but Minho stops you.
He walks up to you “I got it,” he says.
You wait for him to take it out but you don't feel anything.
“Did you get it?”
No response.
“Minho?”
No response.
You turn around to see Minho on one knee holding up a ring.
You were speechless.
“Y/N, From the moment I asked you out to right now I have grown more in love with you each moment of every day. You're the most beautiful woman in the world and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and with that, I want to ask you one question.”
Tears threaten to leave your eyes
“Y/N, Will you marry me?”
You begin nodding your head rapidly.
“Yes!” you finally let out.
You put your hand out as he puts the ring on your finger.
As soon as he stands up you tackle him into a hug.
“I love you so much,” he whispers into your ear.
“I love you too,” you say, kissing his cheek.

It puzzles me that Jackson’s script explicitly describes the ship on which Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf & the Elves leave as “the last ship to leave Middle-earth.” Like, not only is this canonically false, and many more ships left for Valinor in the Fourth Age, but it seems to be trying to erase/ignore the fact that Sam will be allowed to sail West someday. It seems to want to imply that in the movieverse, Sam will never see Frodo again, to which I can’t help but ask … WHY??? Like why cut the line where Frodo tells Sam his time may come, leaving hope for viewers who haven’t read the books???? How does taking out Tolkien’s ray of hope/eventual happy reunion ending and making the goodbye seem permanent serve any purpose???? IMO, it’s one of the worst changes the films made.

What’s crazy is that for all the decades that LOTR has been out, and for all the years it’s been so famous and relevant, it wasn’t common knowledge how it ends? Idk like I knew Frodo and Sam make it back to the Shire. I thought that was it. I thought they got their simple happy ever after. But I DIDN’T know that Frodo leaves for the Grey Havens!!!! LIKE I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT ! HOW WAS I NOT AWARE OF THAT!!!!! Maybe it was just me but like I’m glad I didn’t know because my reading experience was so fun and I would never want to miss out on that heartbreak of the real bittersweet ending.

"The Grey Havens"
2023
Tumblr media
... the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.
-"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King", by J.R.R. Tolkien
My tribute to the Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy ends, fittingly, at the shores of the sea. The Grey Havens scene has become the epitome of bittersweet endings everywhere; it's breathtakingly sad, but also wholesome, tender, and comforting in its sadness. And it is elevated by one of the most beautiful yet underrated musical themes in the films, which is also melancholic but carrying within it a powerful sentiment of hope. And I don't know how, but Howard Shore made this tune sound like the sea, if that makes any sense.
This scene also notably contains one of my very favorite LotR quotes ever, uttered by none other than Gandalf himself: "I will not say 'do not weep', for not all tears are an evil."

i might flesh these out more i might not lol. some of them i felt INSPIRED on and some i didnt. :V also had names in mind for some of them and not for others lol. generally speaking the idea is that the voyager crew and the maquis are like, two groups in conflict. starfleet is a warren, and the maquis are just a bunch of deserter rogue bunnies causing problems who janeway (Haven) is set out to capture. ummmm i figureeeed MAYBE that the caretaker plot would be that a small group from each side gets captured by the "caretaker" and they get transported somewheeeere like a lab or something and then they have to work together to escape and find their home (or make a new one together *winks mysteriously*).
Janeway: Haven - Captain of her warren's Owsla, sent to capture the rogue rabbits, becomes a respected leader for the band of homeless bunnies, and eventually is regarded as their chief rabbit.
Chakotay: Hawk - A big buck that got his name from the other maquis rabbits by fighting off an elil (hawk lol). He has a sick scar from the fight on his head. Serves underneath Haven and comes to respect her and her leadership, keeps everyone in line since she's so little.
Paris: Buttercup - A free spirit, pretty carefree for a buck and it almost always gets him into trouble. Deserted from the warren, deserted from the rogues, just wants to roam and do what he wants. Considered to be rather fast and brave, if reckless; believes he can outrun anything.
Tuvok: Orchid - Orchid's secretly still a part of the warren still but infiltrating the band of rogues, part of the Owsla in their warren, serves under Haven devotedly. Doesn't say much. Haven blathers for the both of them.
Torres: 🤷 - Not a lot of ideas here sadly lol, her design's very filler I just couldn't think of anything to do. :'U Still debating on giving the girlypops hair. Just an angry doe with daddy issues, serves under Hawk, takes a while to warm up to Haven, thinks she could easily take her in a fight.
Doctor: Doc - I figure Doc and Seven would probably be like, lab rabbits that join the band at the Caretaker's establishment or whatever. So Doc comes across as very spoiled and whiney and pampered (And kinda overweight lol BUT LARGE AND NOT MALNOURISHED). Has a weird knack for cleaning wounds given his upbringing.
Seven: Seven - MAYBE a bred Blanc de Hotot. Built different. Doesn't say a lot. HUGE for a doe, similar to Doc. Has a lovehate thing with Doc, they probably were raised around each other, Seven takes to the wild a lot more naturally than he does.
Kim: 🤷 - Just a lil fella! I'm not sure if he'd have been in the Owsla or not prior to adventuring out with Haven and her group. Maybe he's training to join the Owsla. He's just happy to be here. :)

The scene at the Grey Havens has so much unsaid. Sam does not detail everything that they all said to each other before the ship departed. While I don’t hate the total silence depicted in the films, it’s much more likely and realistic that the hobbits and Gandalf did have much to say to each other, which Sam chose to keep private and out of the record.
I headcanon that Pippin must’ve needed a moment to say goodbye to Gandalf, too. He really grew closest to Gandalf out of all the hobbits besides Frodo. A sizable chunk of the story focuses on the two of them in Gondor. While Pippin often annoys Gandalf throughout the story, it is clear that there is always affection there. Then it was their teamwork that saved Faramir. Gandalf especially must’ve really admired Pippin for his bravery and maturity during the siege and the Morannon battle.
I imagine while Frodo was hugging Merry goodbye, and Sam stood aside crying, Pippin asked if Gandalf really had to go, prompting Gandalf to confirm his time really was over. (Billy Boyd says a moment similar to this was filmed for but cut from the movie.)
Then Pippin lowered his head in tears. Gandalf touched Pippin’s chin, gently raised it to allow their eyes to meet, and tenderly said with a smile, “Farewell, fool of a Took.” And Pippin couldn’t help but smile at that.
