My Favorite Books of 2020!
Tumblr media
Writers & Lovers, Lily King - My most recommended book of 2020 is a portrait of the artist as a 30-something woman that features a character I would do anything to make out with. Parakeet, Marie-Helene Bertino - Her writing is incredible, I jotted down so many sentences. It’s about family and marriage and convention and trauma (but I laughed a lot too!). It features crazy twists and turns, plus a super interesting, new-to-me job (you know I love reading about work).
Pizza Girl, Jean Kyoung Frazier - In my opinion, this book has the best cover of 2020. It’s a wild ride from start to finish and features a funny, sad slacker girl and so much pizza.
Vesper Flights, Helen Macdonald - When a nonfiction book lands on my end-of-year roundup, you know it’s outstanding. It’s about animals and nature and it reminded me that I know very little about anything. It features wild boars, meadows, swans, the 9/11 tribute lights, and deer-vehicle collisions, among other topics!
Not Like the Movies, Kerry Winfrey - Kerry has my favorite sense of humor and is an expert on pies, yacht rock, Gilmore Girls and romcoms. This book has a Luke and Lorelai love story better than the original and it features an iconic character: Mikey Danger.
Everything Here Is Under Control, Emily Adrian - So many personal obsessions contained in here: Ohio, dramatic teenage friendships, motherhood, disappointing men! It features a scene I haven’t stopped thinking about since I first read the book, more than a year ago.
So We Can Glow, Leesa Cross-Smith - I bought this collection just before everything shut down in March and it saved me from the depths of despair. It features a story called “Tim Riggins Would’ve Smoked” -- you know you wanna read that.
Evening, Nessa Rapoport - This novel is so unexpectedly funny and the writing is *chef’s kiss* and it made me SOB. When I finished, I turned back to the first page and started reading again. It features a Type A sister and a Type B sister; in other words, the story of my life bwahahaha.
The Knockout Queen, Rufi Thorpe - I’ve posted about Rufi many times on here (and interviewed her!) because she is one of my writing queens. Seriously, what is it like to be that brilliant? This book features the most memorable, heartbreaking character of the year: Bunny Lampert.
Solutions and Other Problems, Allie Brosh - The long-awaited return of Allie Brosh features the funniest story about drugs and the funniest story about breaking into your neighbor’s house, plus pets, sickness, divorce, love, childhood, loneliness, and learning how to be your own friend. Did I cry? Oh yeah!!!

ENTER STAGE RIGHT... JONAH PRYCE AS “THE VILLAIN”
Tumblr media
content warnings for: infidelity, disassociation, emotional abuse, gaslighting, disordered eating / body image issues
FULL APP // PINTEREST // WANTED CONNECTIONS
&& basics–– full name: jonathan alexander pryce sinclair age: twenty-one (sensitive little cancer, his birthday’s july 1st) sexuality: bisexual baby (literally bc he’s still parsing all of this / figuring out this part of his identity) gender & pronouns: cis, he/him/his character comps: kendall roy ( succession ), the man in black ( westworld ), bojack horseman ( bojack horseman ), adam groff ( sex education ), tim riggins ( friday night lights ), max evans ( roswell new mexico ) full statistics page here
&& history––
jonah’s got legacies on both sides of his family. his father, william pryce, is the heir of a meat distribution company based in pennsylvania that’s become one of the largest beef distributors in the continental united states. his mother, charlotte sinclair, is from old money that’s now tied up in several magazines / newspapers in the tristate area
his whole childhood, he could never figure out why william hated him so much, why william would never give him an ounce of paternal love, not the way he did with jonah’s brothers. and then one night, in a drunken tirade, william reveals: jonah’s a bastard. he’s not william’s son, but rather a product of charlotte’s infidelity
the truth of who he is makes too much sense to jonah, contextualizes everything that’s ever happened to him, and it breaks something in him. he grows into the role of the ‘destroyer’, the villain, the bastard. he learns coldness from his father, apathy from his mother, and shoulders the guilt of his own birth as though he’s not just a child, as though he did something to deserve this. he comes to realize, it’s not that he did anything wrong. simply put, jonah was just born wrong.
theater helps, and he’s good at it too, but it doesn’t undo the ache of being cast aside. jonah becomes obsessed with finding his birth father and finally, after sixteen years of pretending, he confronts his mother, who reluctantly gives jonah his name: desmond burnes.
desmond burnes is a playwright, much to jonah’s delight. and he’s an alderidge alum (which is why jonah even applied here to begin with). the summer before he goes off to college, jonah decides to go to new york to track down his dad, using a summer theater program at columbia as a guise for tracking des down. and at first, des is everything he wanted in a parent: thoughtful, attentive, engaged. but the more jonah gets to know him, the more he realizes how hot and cold des is, how similar the two of them are, in all the worst ways.
the summer ends in turmoil, as you would expect. jonah developed a bit of a crush on hugh, the prop designer for des’ play, not realizing that des and hugh were already entangled sexually. jonah finds the two of them together, and it breaks him, not because he’s jealous, but because he realizes: des will never be the kind of father jonah’s needed his whole life. it leaves a hole in his heart, a void he thinks will never be filled.
until....enter stage left!! orson hobbs. that slimy mother fucker saw how much pain there is in jonah, but also saw how he could harness that deep, deep agony for something great. and jonah, for what feels like the millionth time in his life, put all of his trust and love and hope into the wrong fucking person because he was so desperate to be good in jonah’s eyes, so desperate to have someone who saw him and wouldn’t leave, like everyone else before orson.
his relationship with helen really threw a wrench in that though. orson always liked jonah broken, and with helen, he finally sound some sense of healing. so he reeled jonah back in, using the role of achilles as the hook line and sinker, and jonah, oblivious to how he was being manipulated, fell for it all. he’s always been so susceptible to changing himself for the approval of other people, always twisting himself into whatever shape he thinks people want to see. it’s only towards the end, days before the curtain rises for troilus and cressida, that jonah understands: orson never cared about him. orson likes him broken, docile, his. and orson will cast him aside if he refuses to comply.
orson’s death has shaken him to his core because, even though he didn’t kill orson, a part of jonah knows that, if he saw orson that night, he would have. knowing he has that rage in him, knowing that that’s what he’s truly capable of... he’s never felt more wrong, more evil in his whole life, and hell, maybe that’s just who he is. maybe he’s failed, so many times, at being good because he’s got a black mark on his heart, just like des, just like william.
&& random facts––
smokes too many cigarettes & doesn’t drink enough water
hates birds
sketches when he’s bored, likes drawing butts
is a staunch vegetarian, trying to go vegan but likes cheese too much
would cry @ everything if he didn’t have to deal w the embarrassment of being vulnerable in front of people
doesn’t know how to swim
knows literally every single thing there is to know about david fincher, one might call him... obsessed??
always looks like he just woke up from a nap... probably because he did
and in that vein, Nap King, he’s been diagnosed with a mild form of narcolepsy, don’t fuck w jonah’s naps
allergic to cats, but loves them so much its stupid
compulsively buys candles when he’s sad (so always buying candles because he’s always fucking sad)
gets HEATED about the great british bake off. don’t talk to him about it if you don’t want to open a pandora’s box of his love for mary berry
favorite color is yellow
always cold
disaster bi: clumsy as fuck. horrible driver. can’t sit properly in chairs. never knows what time it is

You’re Not Good Enough Book Tag
1. You only have one more spot on your Spelling B team, who would you pick to complete your team? Nina Zenik or Evelyn Hugo
Nina Zenik! Nina is a smart cookie (not saying that Evelyn isn’t smart, because she is smart) who knows like 4+ languages. I’m pretty sure she’ll be a top notch speller and on top of that, spell words in 4+ other languages.
2. Both characters want to kill you, which one would you kill first so you have a better chance of surviving? Julian Blackthorn or Evie O’Niell
I’m killing Julian Blackthorn. That boy would cut my throat without a second thought. Plus, what’s Evie gonna do with her powers? Not much, to be honest.
3. You’re on the bachelor/bachelorette an you’re down to these two characters, which one are you going to give your rose too? Elias Veturius or Jesper Fahey
Can I not? Because these two beautiful beings deserve so much more than what I could give them. I’LL SEND THEM BOTH OFF TO LIVE THEIR LIVES  WITH THEIR TRUE LOVE who is not me, even though I love both of them so so much. But if I have to choose, bye Elias.
4. You’ve been chosen for the Hunger Games, who would most likely volunteer in your place? Rhysand or Jem Carstairs
I would hope it’s Rhysand so I can marry Jem and not have to worry about him being killed but knowing just how kind Jem is, he would volunteer. And I mean, Rhysand, I like him but I LOVE JEM CARSTAIRS SO.
5. You’re stranded on an island. Which character would you sacrifice to engage in cannibalism? Jace Herondale or Gansey
Bye Jace. I’m sorry for anyone who loves him, but I mean, it’s Richard Gansey III. But let’s be real. The more logical thing to do would be to sacrifice Gansey because Jace is more capable of finding a way off the island, but if we don’t find a way off that island, Jace will kill me and eat me so, bye Jace.
6. You’re the next DC/Marvel superhero (with your own tv show of course), who is your sidekick? Kell Maresh or Kate Harker
Haha, let’s be honest. With either of them being my sidekick, it will turn into The Great Gatsby where I’m the side character in my own story. BUTTTTT I’m choosing Kate because I feel like she’d be the kick ass side kick we all need.
7. You’re a manager of an Avocado admiring company, who would you fire for lack of communication skills? William Herondale or Magnus Bane
Bye William Herondale. We all know that Magnus can swoon anyone with his looks and words and if he can’t, he has magic on his side to help him.
8. You’ve just finished a book in which your favorite character dies, which character is most likely to comfort you? Blue Sargent or Victor Vale
Blue Sargent. I mean, come on, Victor Vale? Comforting me? That’s never gonna happen.
9. Ugh, it’s high school. Who would most likely be part of the popular clique? Noah Czerny or Marcella Riggins
I feel like both of them would be apart of the popular clique but in different ways. Noah would be in the clique because he’s super cool and lax. Marcella would be in a clique because she possesses that certain power to make people want to be her and love her. But most likely? Noah.
10. The day has arrived; you’re finally a year older! Who would have the nerve to forget your birthday? Emma Carstairs or August Flynn
August Flynn, but if I’m being real here, they both would not forget because they are such kind characters. I only say August because he’s got a lot on his plate and he doesn’t have time to remember minuscule things like my birthday.
11. You’ve just found an upcoming booktube star? Who would most likely be? Helene Aquilla or Isabelle Lightwood
Isabelle Lightwood. Izzy has that YouTube-like personality. She’s outgoing and can talk easily. She’d enjoy talking to a camera and doing funny skits and what not. Helene, I think, would just be so awkward or would be like, “what the hell am I doing?”
12. Sleepover time! Unfortunately you can only invite one person, who would you invite? Ronan Lynch or Rowan Damisch
Ronan Lynch. Ronan and I can go on late night adventures and fuck shit up. THAT IS MY DREAM.
13. Bam, you’re pregnant. Who’s the father/mother? Adam Parrish or Wylan Van Eck
Adam Parrish. I still love Wylan, but I mean, it’s Adam Parrish.
14. You’ve just written a super important text. Who would ‘see’ it, but not reply? Avitas Harper or Delilah Bard
Delilah Bard. I feel like she wouldn’t even be the kind of person to text, or have a phone.
15. You’ve just woken up and it’s time for breakfast. Your mum’s been replaced by..who?! Theta Knight or Inej Ghafa
Inej Ghafa. I love Theta, but Inej as my mother? Any day, PLEASE. She’d be the best mother ever.

My Top 10 DGHDA fics
Since this lil fandom is expanding with the advent of season 2 (and since we are all still REELING from yesterday’s phenomenal episode oh my GOD), I thought I’d rave a bit about my favourite fics. I know if you’ve been in the fandom any length of time then you’ve already read all of these, but rec lists never hurt, especially with new faces popping up!
Please note, this is a list of my personal favourites, and therefore is very biased in favour of Brotzly, and very biased in a multitude of other ways. There are lots of other great fics on ao3 as well, I’m just very otp-focused.
(Also, I decided I wasn’t going to have anyone on here twice, but I have both inky and neko on here twice because they have written such a high number of iconic fics)
1. Universal Truths by inkyfishes ( @inkyfishes )
Author Summary:
“...Very long story short, until yesterday, it hailed as my greatest case: one of deception, danger, double-crosses, and an all-round perversion of high emotion and - dare I say it - romance…”
What do horses, robots, time-travel, false identities, alternate universes, flagrant homosexuality and the University of Cambridge have in common? Probably not much, but it's all Todd Brotzman has to work with after he falls through a hole in space and time, arriving at St. Cedd’s College for the first day of Svlad Cjelli (not yet notoriously known as Dirk Gently). There's a case to be solved, but it refuses to start. For both Todd and Svlad, and Dirk and Farah, events unfold in exactly the way you'd expect at Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
(This work is canon-compliant as per the end of Season 1. It refers to canon set out in the two Dirk Gently novels, the Dirk Gently 2010 TV Series, the Dirk Gently Comics "The Salmon of Doubt" and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, but none of that is needed to understand the work.)
My gushing:
It’s a close call, since there is a lot of great stuff in this fandom, but this is my personal favourite Dirk Gently fic. The ambition and scope of this story absolutely blows my mind. It unites pretty much every form of Dirk Gently, from the original novels up to the most recent BBCA version which forms the main focus of the story, and its take on the characters is both original and convincing. Beautifully written, funny, sad, and with romantic tension that will knock your socks off. This is an epic journey.
2. The Dolphin Paradox by nekosmuse ( @nekosmuse )
Author Summary:
Having lost his job at the Perriman Grand, Todd takes a job selling vintage vinyl to unappreciative hipsters while trying to put his life back together. Dirk Gently is a somewhat regular customer. That is, until Dirk can fix the timeline and get Todd his memories back.
The Record Store AU that's not a Record Store AU.
My gushing:
I’m still so grateful to have been a part of the fandom while this was in progress. Waiting for the updates, which were phenomenal every time, and watching the story unfold, was such a blast. Even if you’re wary of AUs, I recommend you give this a try. The slightly different version of Todd is so interesting and the love story is so very sweet. Not to mention the plot is riveting and clever. Fandom classic, must read.
3. you can break a thing, but you cannot always afterward guide it into the shape you want by cosmicocean, princessparadox ( @cosmicoceanfic, @princessparadoxical )
Author Summary:
He does not think about home. The memories feel like they burn holes in his mind.
AU where every Blackwing subject is a changeling, except for one: an abducted fae, who will answer to no name but Icarus.
My gushing:
Dirk is a fae! This fic unites the sci-fi sensibilities of the first season with magic and mythology in a way that now feels kind of prophetic, given the events and tone of the second season. It’s gorgeously, gorgeously written, with an intense soulmate vibe that is counterbalanced wonderfully by top notch banter. All the characters shine so brightly in this, but powerful yet vulnerable Dirk is my favourite part. Frigging epic.
4. objects in mirror may be closer than they appear by sharlook
( @aceabed )
Author Summary:
You’re alone, with your arms wrapped tight around a pillow at god knows what time in the night, and there are tears running down your face because you can’t seem to stop thinking about it, not even in your dreams.
And then clutching your covers you get an idea.
(In which Dirk has nightmares about Blackwing, goes to Todd for help, and is really, really, really in love.)
My gushing:
This fic absolutely blindsided me, with the kind of writing that seems quiet and delicately wrought, but is simultaneously incredibly powerful and poignant. A wonderful portrayal of Dirk dealing with his traumas and anxieties, while being very in love with Todd. May make you cry.  I have so much love for this story, and so much admiration for the prose. Achingly beautiful.
5. split the secret up by piggy09
Author Summary:
He asks if Dirk can hear it and Dirk just laughs, the sound reassuringly human.
Well, not reassuringly. Reassuringly would mean Todd had to be reassured.
It’s just – it sounds human. Which is good. Because Dirk is human. Definitely.
My gushing:
Fic in which the Blackwing subjects are not quite human. Featuring eldritch!Dirk. This story is beautifully, meticulously written, and very evocative and unsettling. Yet Dirk is still somehow the sweetest eldritch abomination I’ve ever heard of.
6. Blood Is Thicker Than Water (But You Know What's Even Thicker? Cookie Dough. Tastes Better, Too.) by DontOffendTheBees ( @dont-offend-the-bees )
Author Summary:
'“Dirk… you know how to make cookies, right?”
The detective glanced between Todd and the ingredients, brow furrowing. “Actually, I was rather hoping you did…”
Todd sighed. He was gonna need another beer. “Let’s Google it.”'
In which Dirk and Todd ill-advisedly try to bake cheer-up cookies for Farah at 3am, and maybe confront some feelings in the process. Fluffy, very lightly angsty anonymous prompt fill, rated teen for a spot of language and mild drunkenness.
My gushing:
I found it very difficult to pick one of Helen’s fics, but in the end I went with this, the first instalment of the baking series, because it is a gift (although I also highly recommend her big bang fic). The dialogue is insanely adorable, it’s perfectly in character, and it exactly satisfies my craving for sweet, domestic fluff. Rendered all the more plausible by the beautiful friendship we’ve seen between Todd, Dirk, and Farah in season 2. :’)
7. Piranha in the Stream of Creation by sarkywoman ( @sarkywoman )
Author Summary:
"We got tuned into each other's radio stations. Let's say that. I got to walk through life ending others and she got the patterns. But it's not all right. Sometimes we're muddled. I'm never sure if I'm doing the right thing. "
Role-Swap AU. Dirk is the holistic assassin, Bart the detective.
My gushing:
The summary above says it all, really. This is such an interesting premise, and I was so happy to see it so well-executed in this fic. Dirk and Bart are very different, and yet still somehow very in-character. A fascinating read from start to finish, and flips your initial ideas on their head in much the same way as the show. I love my holistic children in this story.
8. The Furthest City Light by nekosmuse ( @nekosmuse )
Author Summary:
Dirk Gently (as he's taken to calling himself) has spent most of his life in Blackwing custody. In that time absolutely nothing of any interest has happened. Instead, a good deal of not-very-good or possibly even very-bad things have happened. These mostly involved a number of people in white coats poking and prodding him while making him guess at numbers. Outside of these unwanted visitors, the vast majority of Dirk's time is spent alone. And then one day a technician leads Dirk into a room where a boy around his age sits behind a table, looking sullen and perhaps a little nervous. Dirk likes him immediately.
Alternate Meeting AU, in which 21 year old Dirk meets 20 year old Todd while still in Blackwing custody.
My gushing:
This story will pluck at your heartstrings, while simultaneously making you want to beat up Riggins even more than you probably already did. Young Dirk and Todd are so convincingly written here - just a tad more vulnerable, more raw than in the show, but still good for each other in so many ways. Dirk in particular will make you cry. Stunningly written as you would expect from neko.
9. A Pattern of Errors by coloursflyaway ( @coloursflyaway )
Author summary:
Dirk picks Todd up for a road trip he never planned to go on, with a red cabriolet and a bright smile and a thousand places to go. And although Todd doesn't know what he expected, he definitely gets more than he bargained for.
My gushing:
Beautiful multi-chapter road trip fic, featuring soft boys holding hands, emotional self-sabotage, and eventual declarations of love. Very calming, dreamy, and emotional.
10. Pray for the Thunder and the Rain by inkyfishes ( @inkyfishes)
Author Summary:
A Farah-centric slice of a possible future.
Everything has gone wrong. Everything is broken. Farah works through her anxiety whilst beginning their lives on the run. Her place in the universe is, as yet, undecided.
(Set immediately after the end of Season 1. Written before airing of Season 2.)
My gushing:
Farah Farah Farah!! A very convincing look at what might have happened post the clusterfuck ending of season 1. This fic is so beautiful and captures Farah’s voice WONDERFULLY, with some bonus Faranda just to make it perfect.

Phi công học lái xe tải, sửa bể bơi mùa dịch
Tumblr media
