Spoiler free review for Netflix's live action One Piece!

WOW.

A lot of stuff to love! I absolutely ADORE this take on the adventure of the Straw Hat Pirates!

The Straw Hats are all cast perfectly, the supporting cast is spot on. Everyone NAILS their characters!

Give the man a crown!

Iñaki Godoy as Luffy is goofy and oblivious in all the right ways. He sticks the perfect landing of the emotional intelligence that was crucial to bring the deeper side of Luffy to life, and doesn't neglect the hyperactive child side either! Seeing him gleefully bounce around - both in and out of fights- was special. The CGI was pretty good! Better than I expected, really. I appreciate making Luffy a little more level-headed, it's a good choice to tone down the chaos goblin for live action 🤣

It was magnificent to see Luffy grow into a "real" pirate in this arc, and he will be the KING!

Mackenyu as Zoro is a bit "too cool" but honestly I expected it to happen, people tend to overlook the fact that 90% of the time he's just as dumb as Luffy 🤷 but MAN is he cool. He really surpassed my expectations for the fight scenes, and did not skip on the brutality! 3 Sword Style was stunningly realized and incredible fun to watch- even without drawing a single blade!

His one liners and sarcasm are on point, ESPECIALLY regarding Sanji 🤣

Emily Rudd as Nami is INCREDIBLE. Smart as a whip and wily as ever, this cat burglar lands on her feet! In and out of combat, Nami is quick on her feet and with her wit. One Piece passes the Bechdel test once again, and her story is every bit the emotional powerhouse as its manga and anime counterparts- better in some moments! 'Nuff said.

Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp is delightful, though unfortunately he doesn't get as much time to shine as the others. When he does though, it's fantastic!

He really got the little things down about the character without needing to be as over the top as his counterparts- a bullseye from the sniper!

Sanji is perfect as well, you can SEE the training Taz Skylar went through for the part, from the mouth watering food to the killer martial arts. Every bit as fun to watch as the rest of the Monster Trio! My expectations for him were already high, and he kicked them into the stratosphere.

I'm glad they toned down the flirting, they found the right balance and played it well. Sanji matches Zoro in the bickering spectacularly, an absolute must that exceeded my hopes in both of their performances.

I'm not gonna list everyone but because I love this stupid fucking clown:

Jeff Ward as Buggy is an absolute TREAT, I am a huge fan of this take on the character. The perfect storm of bumbling dipshit who wants to be taken seriously, but still pretty intimidating at times. LOVE it. His jokes are GOLD.

Speaking of! Gold Roger, the man who started it all! *mwah!* Dazzling performances from him AND the Marines.

The few nitpicks I have are minor, the childhood acting ranges from ok to abysmal, Lily Fisher as young Nami is a notable standout. Some of the "minor" characters suffer from wooden acting, but honestly that's about the worst of it.

The Fishmen look a little low budget in their early appearances, but are absolutely PERFECT when they are the ones in the spotlight. Absolutely phenomenal work from McKinley Belcher III, my biggest fear from this was Arlong being done wrong and he CRUSHED IT!

The soundtrack was rousing, it truly felt like a call to adventure! And above all the SET DESIGN 😭

They TRULY brought the world that Oda Senseii has been drawing for us all these years, to life.

And now, anime One Piece is trending on Netflix.

THE GREAT PIRATE ERA IS HERE!

Here's to hoping Netflix doesn't Netflix it 🍻

Super excited. Nervous. But this has been a long time coming. It’s not perfect. We’re still figuring the whole podcast thing out, but I’m very immensely proud of what we have going on. I think how much thought & care we’ve invested comes through in the episodes. I hope anyway…

Every episode ends with an original song written from the perspective of a character. The first two episodes are Stede songs— written, performed, produced by me.

Earlier this week I watched 3 different Steve Jobs biopics in one day while expressly interpreting them as a trilogy wherein he must re-traverse the Steve Jobs mythos 3 times, with me and a friend noting the variations in repeated legends and the difference in where thematic emphasis is placed. It reminded me of a time when you answered an ask that was something along the lines of 'is this literally in the text?' with (not even remotely verbatim) 'probably not, but it's fun to make connections' and you know what? It is.

I can't say I'd recommend sinking 6 hours into doing the same, but I DO recommend the first part of the trilogy, Pirates of Silicon Valley, if you want a wild movie. It was like the Amadeus of Steve Jobs biopics. Also have a good one!

The Hjaldir brainrot is very strong, but I think I'll answer these for the WYGTYA version of Hjaldir, not the one we'll see in 'Hymn of the High seas' because he's grown as a character and a bit different. Also, I think he may appear in WYGTY faster than OTHS but that depends on my inspiration.

Taking the wheel and slowly steering a ship on a warm summer night will always put him at ease. He's a damn good helmsman, too. Also, as we progress with his story, when he was no longer a pirate/sailor, but a bard in Blacklight, well, he didn't need to calm down, his life was very peaceful, but he loved it when they were closing in for the night and did the dishes with Endryn and Ravonna. That was the time when they'd share all the tavern gossip gathered throughout the day. And they'd laugh and make doing the dishes fun

🍆: Does your OC have any favourite form of affection, physical or otherwise?

Hjaldir's love languages are quality time and physical touch! Also, he shows a lot of his love through music. If he likes you, he'll sing to you specifically non stop.

Zoro, Law, and Kid X Y/N pov: meeting for the first time

Warning: little violence

Roronoa Zoro

🍻 It was just an incident that Zoro and y/n meet each other. The Straw Hat Pirates had just arrived at the island where Y/N lived.

Y/n POV:

🍻 After a long day you decided to go out for some booze. It was a quiet night all you could hear was people chatting and the waves. Until a lot of screams filled the air. "What could that be," you said, and without thinking you started to go to where the screams came from.

🍻 It seems to be outside of the bar, it was a rare sign to see on this island. It was one pirate against four? No maybe five other pirates?

🍻 You stood behind a wall, it was getting exciting. The Man with the green hair looked so familiar, but from where?

Zoro POV:

🍻 To his surprise he had seemed to find the way to a bar. And not only that, there were a lot of pirates who recognized him. It was just as Zoro wanted, a lot of booze and a good fight.

🍻 "Oi... You just gonna stand there" Zoro could sense another person, but it wasn't a pirate it was a young lady. Zoro got distracted when he saw her, what was this feeling?

🍻 "Watch out!" She yelled at Zoro, he turned around and started to do what he loves, to cut. It was over faster than he wanted it to be.

🍻 The young lady decided to come out of hiding and walked up to Zoro. "So what would you say to some booze?" When she smiled at him, the same feeling he felt when he first saw her came back.

🍻 "I wouldn't mind some Booze, I'm Zoro" he said and opened the door. "Nice to meet you, my name is Y/n" He followed her inside, and what a great night it was.

Trafalgar Law

Law POV:

💉The Heart Pirates were low on supplies and decided to stop by a little Island to get more. "Bepo, you come with me," the Captain said and started to walk towards the little town ahead.

💉 "I'm hungry Captain" Bepo started to whine. Law just looked at him and pointed to a store that both sold what he needed as a surgeon. It was a lot of medicine and seemed to even be some medicine he never had heard of.

💉 And to his surprise it was also a food store for healthy food. "How interesting" Law went inside the store, and Bepo went straight to where the food was. "Hello, and welcome. What would you like to eat?"

Y/N POV:

💉 "Hello, and welcome. What would you like to eat" My customer looked like a??? Polar Bear?? Or could it be a mink?

💉 I smiled but couldn't stop thinking about how soft he looked. "What would you recommend?" The Polar Bear/mink asked looking happy. I took up the menu and placed it in front of him.

💉 "Tell me, are you by any chance a Mink?" He looked at me surprised and nod in an agreement. HOW CUTE! "Well then I would say that this Smoothie right here would be good whit this menu" the mink gave me a big smile with sparkling eyes. "Give me a few minutes" I smiled and walked to the kitchen.

💉 "Here you go, eat up and enjoy" is one of the things I enjoyed the most was happy customers. "Bepo, what are you eating, it smells good," Another man says as he comes closer to the mink. What a handsome man, Bepo seems to be enjoying the food and doesn't seem to notice the man.

💉 "It's one of my recipes, A herb smoothie and a plate of rice with some fish from the blue sea. Would you like some too? It's on the house" The man looks you straight in the eyes, what a feeling. "Do you have onigiri?" You smiled and went to the kitchen. "Would you like it to be served with grilled fish?"

💉 " Yes... And you to be the chef in my pirate crew"

Eustass Kid

Y/N POV:

💀 The marine had captured you, or they thought so. It was your plan all along to get a free ride to the new world. You knew your bounty was high so why not use it.

💀 "What a beauty, too bad she's a pirate." You could hear the conversations going on around you. It wasn't long until you had entered the new world just a little bit further.

💀 A marine stood in front of you looking down at me. "Tell me, you always know what and where we are. How could you not know this time y/n?" This question was a trick, it had to be. I looked up and gave a little smile. "I was asleep"

💀 "We are getting shot at! Get ready!" The marine went to see what was going on, you decided it was time to get out and start looting.

💀 You were out of the handcuffs and snuck your way to the treasure room. "How easy" The Marines' attention was on the fight that just happened. You opened the door, "And just who is this?"

Kid POV:

💀 "Captain! The Marines'" Killer banged at the Captain's door, Kid came out with an evil smile. He laughed loudly "You know what do to guys!" And with that, the attack began.

💀 Kid watched as his crew jumped over to the Marinefleet, he came behind them starting to use his devil fruit power. The screams from the battle and the blood on the floor were a sight to behold.

💀 "What are you guys doing here," Kid said as he lifted the body of a marine. He refused to talk. "If you're not going to talk then I have to make you"

💀 It didn't take long for the marine to speak, "We are taking a Pirate to..." And with that, he goes all silent, we bleed out. "Oh well, I found out that they have treasures here" killer said and looked at the captain.

💀 When he got to the treasure room the door was slightly open, Kid opened up, and there was another pirate. She was taking it all in bags, "And just who is this?". She turned around and locked eyes with him, a little devil's smile came from both of them. " Captain Kid" "Y/N, a beauty in real life, come with us," Kid said and gave her a hand. All she did was take his hand and become the newest crew member.

HC YoungBlood Totally loved the cowboy phase/ Is the one Danny can tolerate the most.

I think it's funny and cool that there's literally this kid ghost whose powers are literally just circling around his imagination/whatever he wants to be that day. And I think as a kid there's one game you always want to play more than others that your friends are tired of playing but you aren't and for YB that's Cowboys. I think Danny is ok with it because he rather deals with YB a boney horse vs a whole ship of pirates or anything to do with space.

It's probably one of those little parties You know Vlad is up to something and Danny really doesn't want to go but due to Jack wanting to keep his friendship with Vlad.

So Danny is next to Vlad during this party and Danny is going off like "I know you're up something and when I figure it out it's OVER for you-" kind of speech and grabs a drink from the table to take a gulp to go on and is like "And this Apple Juice is TERRIBLE" taking another taste of it

And Vlad is like "That's white wine"

Ahoy there! So, two nights ago I went to see Wardruna in Toronto and they were incredible...but I can't say the same for some fuckheads in the audience. Oh well...besides them, the band and the whole experience was awesome.
