Hevein, a lectin-like protein is the major protein of vacuolar structures called lutoids in the latex of rubber trees. We have shown both by in planta and ex planta studies that hevein is involved in the coagulation of latex by bringing together rubber particles.  This polyvalent bridging between hevein and rubber particles is mediated by N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and involves a receptor glycoprotein of 22 kDa, whichis localized on the surface of the rubber particles. The proposed role of hevein helps us to understand the mechanism of coagulation of latex and assigns a physiological intracellular function to one of the smallest lectins.

MANAUS: HEAVEN and HELL
This is the Manaus Opera House today. When my brother flew 900 miles up the Amazon in the early 70s with his French Belgian girlfriend, they were on the trail of ideas for a movie. Her father owned a film company in Brussels. The two of them had an established record of getting in anywhere they thought they would find an idea. Manaus Opera house was abandoned and growing derelict at that point.…

British presence in the Straits Settlements […] (Penang, Singapore and Melaka) as a whole opened the way […]. Governor Andrew Clarke [...] clearly intended that economic botany should follow the quest for tin. Hardly three months after the [signing of the treaty legitimising British control in Malaya] [...] the Governor pressed Lord Carnarvon, Secretary of State for the Colonies, himself a keen botanist and collector, for the services of a ‘scientific botanist’. [...] Intimate plant knowledge among local [people] [...] assisted the discovery of many [plants valuable to European empire] [...] and the absorption of a number of vernacular names such as kempas (Koompassia), pandan (Pandanus) and nipah (Nypa) into scientific nomenclature. Equally, indigenous names for timbers, pre-eminently meranti and cengal, attained the status of trade names on the international market. Malay knowledge [...] proved also invaluable for commerce and [...] industries.
The Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, which displayed representative samples of colonial resources, was a microcosm of empire. Empire [...] co-sponsored the surveying, mapping and inventorying of people, lands and products for the ends of imperial power. Tropical nature, once a source [...] of wonderment, was brought to the domestic market place.
High on the imperial economic agenda were the Malayan territories, the source of gutta percha (from Palaquium gutta). Ingeniously adapted by the Malays [...], the plastic qualities of gutta percha were investigated for medical and industrial use by the [English East India] Company surgeons, T. Mongtomerie (1819-43) and T. Oxley (1846-57). [...] At the same time Oxley successfully pioneered the use of gutta percha for plastering fractures and preserving vaccine, the latter hitherto unable to be kept even for a few days. When a Prussian artillery Officer [...] then perfected its use for insulating telegraph cables, the product immediately gained strategic importance for the empire. Similar adaptations of other indigenous uses of plants paid dividends to industry and agriculture. [...]
---
The emergence of Hevea rubber in the Peninsula, superseding gutta percha as an industrial product was, again, the result of scientific exchange within the close-knit colonial botanical network [...] [following] [t]he illegal exportation by Kew [Royal Botanic Gardens in London] of the seedlings from South America to Ceylon and the Singapore Botanic Gardens [...]. Out of the seedlings sent in 1877 to Singapore, seven were planted by Hugh Low in the Perak Residency Garden. These and those raised in the Botanic Gardens furnished the seeds for the first plantations.
Though an introduced species, indigenous knowledge [...] of a wide variety of gums and exudates [...] benefited the plantation industry.
This [...] scored a major triumph for the colonial plantation industry. [...]
Large areas of Melaka had already been laid to waste by [...] a fast-growing variety of Brazilian cassava introduced in 1886 by Cantley.
The same cultivators soon turned the Imperata grasslands to rubber, but its rapid spread meant that a number of native plant species either became very rare or were entirely exterminated. The wild ancestor of the domestic mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a likely example. [...] During his visit to Singapore in 1854 Wallace identified, within just a square mile, some 700 species of beetles [...].

Solidago canadensis (Canada goldenrod) and Bombus (bumblebee)
During World War 1, rubber was recognized as a strategic commodity as supplies ran short in the industrial world. The U.S. imported rubber from Southeast Asia and the East Indies. In the 1920′s, Thomas Edison began his search for a home-grown source of rubber.
The rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, is not the only source of latex rubber and after testing more than 17,000 plant samples, Edison decided on goldenrod with a yield of about five per cent latex. Edison selected the varieties that seemed to have the most potential, divided the roots, planted them separately, divided them again, and started crossbreeding. It was time-consuming; but a giant goldenrod about fourteen feet tall yielding about twelve per cent latex was ultimately developed.
Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone became interested and put big money into the project. Vast fields of goldenrod were planted, processing factories were built and goldenrod tires were introduced to the market in 1929. Unfortunately, 1929 was not a good year for business in general and the invention of the synthetic rubber Neoprene (made from petroleum byproducts) in 1931, doomed this fledgling industry. During World War 2, German synthetic rubber factories were specifically targeted by Allied bombers.

Journal of Agriculture and Ecology Research International 7(3): 1-5
The effect of some latex yield stimulants on flow rate in Hevea trees was investigated using NIG 805 clone as the test clone in the clonal garden of the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria, Iyanomo, Benin City. The Hevea trees used for the investigation were treated with four different stimulants and control, in three replicates. Each treatment, inclusive of the control, comprised of 3 trees, making a total of forty-five (45) trees. The stimulants used include; Mortex 50, Mortex 25, Vitex and Ethephon. The experiment was laid out in a complete randomised block design. Stimulation was done once in thirty (30) days and tapping done using the ½S d/3 tapping method for a period of ninety (90) days.
Data collected include girth of the trees, length of tapping cut, initial volume (volume of latex flow within the first five minutes after tapping), final volume (volume of latex flow two hours after tapping) and dry rubber content (DRC). Latex flow time for each tree was two hours. Thereafter, the flow rate was calculated and the data transformed. The results were analysed using ANOVA. There was a significant difference in the mean latex flow rate of the trees treated with Mortex 50. Similar results were obtained when the experiment was repeated the following year. Keywords: stimulant, Mortex, Vitex, Ethephon, flow rate, latex, DRC

please do talk about the history of plastic here as well! it sounds very intriguing
We're getting into contemporary history, which is my worst suit but: in the interrogation I specifically mentioned Bachelite, so, it was just a few words about how it was first obtained from a reaction between formaldehyde and fenol, creating a kind of molecular 'map' resembling that of lignina (fenol rings connected by CH2, that sort of thing?) - during a time when most electrical insulating materials were made of lattice, which was plant-produced (by the Hevea Brasiliensis if I'm not mistaken), the fact that Baekeland was able to produce a material which could substain the same temperatures was important for the progress in computers and other electrical circuits. And to substitute for the ivory used in pool balls, also.
The tricky thing about lattice is that it can't be synthetised easily because the 'rubber' is isoprene, which can have both cis and trans geometrical isomeria, and while in the plant there is an enzime which makes them all cis, so they form the spirals that make rubber elastic and moldable (and then you can make it solid with vulcanisation, which makes double solfur bonds inbetween spirals) - its human synthetisation lacks those enzimes, so we got a mixed bag of the two versions, until the Ziegler-Natta catalysts were made. And Bachelite was a good alternative for thermoelectrical insulation because it was easier to produce than the plant-harvested lattice, although for its more elastic-serving uses we first substituted it with SBR.
