Pilot Duncan has such an unbeatable look. Gay little ear piercing. Bangs. Horrible extensions pulled into the worlds lankest ponytail. Always shirtless or dressed like dan in bride of reanimator

I got a friend watching Beyond Belief, I'm watching Highlander with her husband while rewatching Buffy by myself, another friend is watching Murder she Wrote and another is watching X-Files and yet another is watching Star Trek: Voyager. Everyone I know is watching shit from or that started or aired in the 90's. No matter who's house I go to it's 90's time. Are we nostalgic or did TV peak?

Me normally: Let people love what they love
Me, after a Test Match Special commentator expresses their belief that the new All Creatures Great and Small is somehow "better" than the 1978 version: This is pure insanity and TMS can no longer be trusted on anything, how can they even be trusted to know about cricket, do they have no TASTE
#Look it's fine that this show exists and people will watch it and like it and that's ok maybe it's just not for me#But that was like a statement purely designed to piss me off#There were lots of issues with the 1978 adaptation! I still vastly preferred the books any day!#And I actually initially had high hopes for the new one because they at least cast a Scot (albeit a Highlander not a Clydesider) as James#And the actors at least looked a little bit younger than Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy#And thank god Helen actually sounds like she's a farmer's daughter and doesn't speak RP!#But from the half hour I've seen of it I've had to write off this new adaptation#For two major reasons#First of all there's Siegfried#Siegfried is one of the key central aspects of the vibe of the books and therefore key to any adaptation#Robert Hardy was too short and too old for the part but he lived and breathed the character#The twinkle in the eye bouncing off the walls and in and out of rooms followed by half a dozen dogs utterly full of life even when angry#But this new Siegfried is just sort of... Eeyore-esque; he comes into a room and you can see the flowers droop and the set turn grey#Siegfried was angry Siegfried was happy and the historical character he was based on was no stranger to melancholy#Since Donald Sinclair did commit suicide or rather self-euthanasia after Alf Wight and his own wife Audrey died#But this slow grumbly figure in the new adaptation is not Siegfried Farnon- the book character didn't grumble more often he exploded#And why did the adaptation give him a dead wife that's so weird? What could that possibly add to the source material?#And this brings me onto my second problem which is to do with women and age#Firstly I have no idea why they aged down Mrs Hall or at least made her look younger than a woman her age would have back then#But what really drove me mad was when Heriot goes out to see some old woman hill farmer in the episode I saw#And this woman is far too clean and young-looking and you can see that she's wearing 'natural' look make-up#And a perfect set of clothes that looked like they were straight out of the House of Bruar autumn collection catalogue#Say what you like about the 1978 adaptation but old women looked like old women regardless of whether or not they wore make-up#It may be that the better quality of television screens means that the 'natural look' shows up on screen more clearly than it would have#But natural look make-up was not really a thing in the 1930s and for old women Yorkshire hill farmers I doubt they'd have much on at all#They just don't seem to be capable of allowing people to look old and wrinkled and real or have bad teeth or unattractive clothes#And everything is far too tidy- everybody looks far too perfectly country and quaint#Anyway the moral of this story is of course that I always recommend reading the books because they're much better#than any tv adaptation; but if forced to choose at least the 1970s one felt real and yet didn't have to be grim either#Ok that's my rant over please do feel free to enjoy the show I just got annoyed because the opinion was expressed on TMS

Hawkeye and Mulcahy 7,8,24 :3
Okay, so I've already had Mulcahy by himself for a couple of asks, so I'm going to assume this question is Hawkeye -and-Mulcahy, for morale.
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
Hawkeye and Mulcahy are a niche pairing - I'm awfully well aware of that. I like stories which pair Hawkeye and BJ or Hawkeye and Trapper (or even Hawkeye and Charles!) just fine. BUT: Hawkeye and Mulcahy clearly have a deep and abiding friendship and respect; they turn to each other for help and emotional support as neither of them do to anyone else: and I like it tremendously when fandom acknowledges this even when Hawkeye is romantically involved with someone else (and Mulcahy perpetually vowed to Someone Else).
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
There are so few Hawkeye/Mulcahy stories on AO3 - or anywhere - that anything I say as critical as "despise" would be a personal criticism, and since I appreciate everyone who's at work in our little niche, I don't want to do that.
I do not get along with depictions of Mulcahy as a sadist, as a masochist, as a judgemental preacher, or as an easy victim. I do not get along with Hawkeye in any of those roles either. They're both very tough, very kind people - who could be broken by circumstances, sure, but who wouldn't break easily and who would themselves be fighting their way back to recovery. That said - ther are now 164 Hawkeye/Mulcahy stories on AO3, a numerical majority of them not written by me or by Iolanthe, and how could I complain about that?
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
George Cowley and Francis Mulcahy for their deep reserve and sense of responsibility. (They have otherwise nothing in common.) Methos and Hawkeye - for their ability to react. immediately, and think outside the box. (They have otherwise nothing in common.) Hawkeye, Spock, and Methos have in common that they are all the Little Black Dress of fandom. - you can pair each of them off with virtually anyone and make sense of it.
Picard and Bagoas as a married couple - in that they are married (legally and publicly, in the case of my ST:tng couple) while being aware that there are vast amounts of their lives they cannot share with each other, and working through it to stay married anyway.
House and Hawkeye are both eccentric but brilliant doctors. They have nothing otherwise in common. Geseja and Francis are both deeply religious people, who cling to their faith to make sense of an awful situation. Otherwise, they not only don't have anything in common, they don't even share a religion. I've written Mirrorverse series for both Spock and McCoy and Hawkeye and Mulcahy. I've written slave!stories for B7 and for Trek and for MASH, and I saw Vila and McCoy and Mulcahy as the character most likely to be able to endure and survive being enslaved - though they have nothing otherwise in common.

A very brief turn by Frazer Hines, as stable hand Jem, in Peter Diamond's pilot for a proposed adventure series Lochinvar (1968). There was little interest in the pilot or any subsequent series, and ultimately the sole filmed episode was never transmitted - it survived in the hands of director/producer Diamond until his family donated the film stock to Kaleidoscope a few years ago.
#fave spotting#frazer hines#lochinvar#tv pilot#jamie mccrimmon#doctor who#classic doctor who#1968#peter diamond#an unusually small role for Frazer; he may not have been lead material‚ but he's barely onscreen 30 seconds here and was a well known tv#presence thanks to stints on Emergency Ward 10 and of course DW (which he was still starring in). possibly he did this as a favour to#Diamond; a ubiquitous stunt arranger and fight choreographer‚ this was Diamond's attempt at breaking out into production and direction but#he would have known Frazer from various jobs he'd done on DW (including Frazer's intro story The Highlanders‚ where Diamond had been fight#arranger as well as having a credited acting role as a sailor). this was shot around July '68 so presumably between Frazer's work on The#Mind Robber and The Invasion; apologies for the slightly weird stretcg effect on the pics but that's true of the materials themselves#strangely Lochinvar is not in 4:3 aspect‚ despite being quite definitely a tv pilot‚ but in a strangely unnatural widescreen as if the#masters were altered at some point in post production (perhaps for a potential cinema release as a support feature?). i can only conjecture#tho. unsurprisingly there's almost no info out there about this obscure tv film that sat in a rusty can for 50 years unseen.#also my immediate thought on reading about it was that the shooting dates Very Nearly coincide with The Mind Robber shooting#(nearly but not quite) and i excitedly wondered if maybe Frazer's infamous bout of chickenpox that saw him replaced for ep2 of that serial#had secretly been a little mischievous excuse to go away and have some fun playing with horses in Buckinghamshire... alas no#Diamond would reunite with Frazer (and Lochinvar co star Noel Coleman) for the following years The War Games where he'd again#be pulling double duty as fight arranger and (uncredited) actor. later in life he would end up doing a little more directing work for tv#but afaik the Peter Diamond Productions company that made this film never worked again

New Here?
Massive amounts of fanfic writing over a show's summer hiatus is a pretty common thing. I see some Tivo fans are patting themselves on the back. Maybe they're new to the ebb and flow of fandom.
The wait between Harry Potter novels was when the big stories happened--the ones that included novels far better than what JKR produced.
Hiatuses give people time to write through whole seasons instead of between-episodic stuff like ep tags.
And Methos completely caught fire in Highlander, and stayed there, but there really wasn't any man before that who had as many sparks with Duncan.
As for Buddie, if Tim Minear believes he's getting a S9 & S10, he may feel less pressed to Buddie Buck & Evan in S8. Endgames happen at the end. Maybe Tim is getting good vibes from ABC?
