Modern Sk8-inspired AU where American snowboarder Jack moves to a dinky little Canadian town called Berk & meets a reckless, longboard racing Hiccup. Hic ends up getting him into skateboarding & racing, & Jack ends up teaching him to snowboard. They’re both big adrenaline junkies & reckless as hell, but they have fun.
I thought it’d make more sense to make Hiccup Canadian even tho he’s not the Langa parallel, cause his VA is Canadian & I’m far more familiar with Canadian small town vibes lol. Especially mountainous, winter tourism small towns. I also plan to add in Hiccups whole friend group as his racing team & give them a kinda punk aesthetic. Let’s be honest, they’re all little punks, and I’m gonna lean into that, fer sure.

Ray Hijacks the Team ZIT Ghostbuster AU Again
So @shadeswift99 made a few posts a while ago about a Team ZIT(S) ghostbuster AU, And then I may or may not have hijacked the post to add in ideas for most of the other hermits because why not.
Now, back then I was spitballing ideas and making them up on the spot, which is admittedly my usual writing process, but hey.
That said, I've had more time to think about it, and then last night I blacked out for a few hours and came to with a Google Doc filled with short bios for all of the hermits and a handful of hermit-adjacents. Now, this rapidly turned into an urban fantasy AU in my hands, but hey. It's fun.
This is in alphabetical order, with alternate personas (EX, Helsknight, Beetlejhost) beneath their original counterparts when applicable:
Bdubs
Lives in an old mansion in the woods alongside Doc for reasons known only to them. Bdubs works as an interior designer, with a side gig as a freelance hairdresser. His eyes are unnaturally large, similar to Keralis’, and he is at least partially a plant. Completely feral and frequently gets in trouble for having knives on him at all times. He and Cleo have a thing called Knife Club which makes everyone else nervous. Nobody messes with Knife Club. It’s not worth it. Sunbathes frequently.
Beef
Is a perfectly normal human being. He works as a butcher with a side gig as a graphic designer specializing in album covers and spends his free time playing pokemon and dragging Etho along to social events. He was the first person to spot the cryptid, and the first person who Etho approached of his own accord.
Biffa
Is a ghost possessing a robotic shell. Biffa is from the future. While initially his main goal was to get back home to his own time, Biffa has since made friends and settled down into a new life running a cafe specializing in a wide range of teas. He’s quite content with this, and has actually found himself far happier than he was in his own time. While his nature means he can see, hear and touch ghosts, his body was built specifically for a disembodied soul to be in the driver’s seat, and he doesn’t want to risk another taking control. Also, he has more important things to do than have fistfights with ghosts.
Cleo
Is a ghost possessing her own dead corpse. Her nature allows her to see, hear and touch ghosts. Can and will fistfight spirits. She works as a teacher, so she’s usually busy, but occasionally in really nasty situations the Beetlejhost will drag her in to break a ghost’s legs. Does sculpture in her free time, and is actually really good. The only one who can wrangle Beetle to any real capacity, and she’s learned to keep him on a fairly short leash. Housemates with Joe, and Keralis also pops in pretty frequently. Has Knife Club with Bdubs. Has an enchanted flower crown that prevents her from decaying further; a gift from Beetle. Recently started learning magic in the form of necromancy and illusions. Has an ongoing ‘feud’ with Zloy, in which she temporarily traps his soul in random inanimate objects every now and then.
Cub
A bit of a ‘mad scientist’ archetype, Cub’s experiments are not exactly the most ethical, though they’re at least more professional than Doc’s. Responsible for the creation of Jevin. Cub gets possessed stupidly easily- sometimes willingly- and can usually handle it himself but sometimes has to call for help. Has a magical method of communication with Scar for exactly this reason. Has a day job as co-owner of a business called ConCorp, which he started with Scar. Has probably broken the Geneva Convention.
Doc
Was presumably human at one point. Now an abomination. Repeated experiments on himself have resulted in a massively changed facial and foot structure, a body covered in mottled green scales, claws, and goat horns. He lost half his face in one of his experiments, and constructed a new cybernetic one. He lost his right arm fighting God. Killed said god and would do it again. Lives in a mansion in the woods with Bdubs, though nobody’s really sure why. Owns a casino because of course he does. Also a living crime against fashion, because the man refuses to wear anything other than his tattered lab coat, torn jeans, and crocs.
Ely
Runs the local radio station. Nobody’s ever seen him in person, and nobody knows where he gets people’s voice clips for his remixes. Probably a cryptid. Maybe a ghost. Seems pretty chill, despite the blatant invasions of privacy.
Etho
Is a cryptid. Lives out in the woods in an abomination that can barely be called a house. Has never been seen in anything other than full Kakashi cosplay. Tends to keep to himself, but occasionally lets Beef drag him along to social events, often with Doc and Bdubs. Nobody really knows what his deal is. Probably not human. Probably.
False
Used to be part of an illegal underground cage fighting ring, until she earned enough to buy her way out. Having grown up in said ring, she struggles to adjust to normal life, but living in a town where the barista is a robot and the local tailor has wings makes it easier. She now has a job as security at Doc’s casino, alongside Iskall.
Grian
Is either an angel or a demigod, but nobody knows which. Has wings. Is both a tailor and an architect. A complete gremlin who has elaborate masks of various birds and will wear them to commit crimes. Eats seeds. Messes with everyone else’s plants. Lives in Jungle Wood Flats. Volunteers at the local theatre.
Hypno
Has three eyes, but hides the third one under a bandanna at all times. Can see ghosts with it. Had problems with sections of plumbing randomly getting clogged and also making very weird noises, and eventually called Team ZIT when the plumbers couldn’t find the source. Was prepared for ghosts, but wound up with a slime creature instead. Works in a $2 store for some reason.
Impulse
Is fully human. The most sensible member of Team ZIT (which admittedly isn’t saying much), Impulse has a day job as a freelancer building custom PCs and fixing broken tech. Agreed to the whole ghostbusting deal because he was bored, mostly. Was the first one to meet Skizz face-to-face, and is the one to own that particular place outright. Gets possessed every now and then, usually by larger spirits. Used to run solely on caffeine and chronic anxiety until Zedaph started getting on his case about his sleep schedule. Now he runs on less caffeine, more sleep, and the same amount of chronic anxiety.
Iskall
Was part of a cloning experiment to create the ultimate hitman, and was the only known one to both survive and escape before the whole thing was shut down by the authorities. Their eye and arm were replaced with cybernetics in order to increase their already enhanced abilities, and they were chased by said authorities, eventually winding up on Mumbo’s doorstep and becoming Mumbo’s problem. Now works as security at Doc’s casino, alongside False. Lives at Jungle Wood flats. Occasionally volunteers at the local theatre. Does bonsai as a hobby.
Jevin
Is the slime creature in the pipes. Hypno lets him live with him under the condition he stops blocking the plumbing and making weird noises at 3 AM (Jevin still blocks the plumbing and makes weird noises at 3 AM, just not as much as he was). Has taught himself to take a humanoid shape, and likes having fingers. Sleeps in the bathtub because he can. Was created from a vat of chemicals in a secret lab underneath the house, which used to be owned by Cub. Doesn’t really talk to the man in question that much, but will occasionally refer to Cub as his father for the sole reason of watching him go through eight existential crises in three minutes. Has a glock.
Joe
Head librarian at the local public library, and has read a lot of books on Supernatural Things. Is a veritable fountain of exposition if you can figure out what he’s saying or have Cleo along with you to threaten the integrity of his shins. Has never been seen in the same place as the Beetlejhost. Are they the same person? Are they entirely separate beings? Is there a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde-type situation going on? Who knows!
Beetlejhost
Literally nobody really knows what his deal is. Nobody. Team ZIT ran into him on a call that they expected to be a false alarm and then he decided to follow them home. Spends most of his time being a minor nuisance in the most bizarre ways possible. Is implied to be responsible for the Ever Given getting lodged in the Suez Canal, but never confirmed. When he’s not bothering Team ZIT or getting them out of tight spots, he’s usually pestering Cleo, the only one who can keep him in line. It’s not really known if he and Cleo have a history or if they’re just Like That.
Keralis
Is a ghost haunting an architecture firm, and is mostly bound to the building, though he can travel to other buildings the firm has built, which is, uh, most of them. Initially only able to do small things- mostly writing notes or drawing diagrams- he eventually meets the Beetlejhost when the latter follows Mumbo to work one day for shits and giggles (he wanted to see how long he could mess with Mumbo before the man noticed. As it turned out, about a week, and by the end it was Iskall who noticed). After a couple of days in which Beetle teaches Keralis Ghost Things™, he scares half the office when he finally manifests for the first time. Has unnaturally large eyes and nicknames for most of the workers. Has no idea how he died or what his unfinished business might be. Very knowledgeable about architecture, and his input is usually very much appreciated.
Mumbo
Is a perfectly normal human being who does IT at Keralis’ architecture firm. Lives at Jungle Wood flats and spends most of his free time tinkering with tech and trying to keep Grian and Iskall out of trouble, which is a losing battle. Has a large, beating golden heart in his flat. He’s not really sure what its deal is, but if he feeds it apples it produces enough power for the entire building. Oh, and if he forgets to feed it for an extended period of time it starts draining his bank account. It’s really weird.
Pixlriffs
Was a perfectly normal human being until he died protecting a certain Russian zombie and became a perfectly normal ghost. Was a reporter in life and is a reporter in death. Runs a blog alongside Zloy about the local goings-on, supernatural or not. The blog’s the type where unless you live in/near the town you most likely won’t stumble across it, but they do have a small following of outsiders who assume the blog’s just a work of fiction. His unfinished business is to prevent Zloy from doing anything particularly stupid, a constant battle. Is able to go more places than Zloy due to being incorporeal, but respects people’s privacy. He’s bound to Zloy to a certain degree, not being able to go beyond a certain range of his friend. The range is pretty big, though, and he has plenty freedom of movement.
Python
Had a run-in with the fae as a kid, in which he accidentally pissed one off. In retribution, the faerie challenged him to answer a riddle or he’d be turned into a snake. Python’s answer was partially correct, so the faerie only transformed him partially. Python is fairly chill, though he strongly dislikes the cold and starts hissing if anyone disturbs him during Sun Time™. Sometimes Bdubs, being partially flora, joins Python for Sun Time™. He’s not venomous, because, you know...python. Also, he has a mildly disturbing habit of strangling rats and mice and then eating them whole, but he can’t help it and just tries not to do so when he has company.
Ren
Is a werewolf. He’s pretty chill regardless of form, though it’s only been recently he’s been comfortable enough leaving his ears and tail visible. He works as a lumberjack. One time Pixl introduced him to Monty Python’s Lumberjack Song and it quickly became his favourite thing. He spends most of his free time volunteering at the local theatre because Ren is absolutely a theatre kid and nobody can convince me otherwise. Gets possessed every now and then. Lives in Jungle Wood flats.
Scar
Works as a landscape developer. Gets possessed absurdly easily, though not quite as frequently as Cub. Has a magical method of communication with him. Technically co-owns ConCorp, but isn’t as involved. His cat, Jellie, is very obviously an eldritch abomination in feline form and he is comedically unaware of this. Lives in Jungle Wood Flats with Grian, Iskall, Mumbo, Stress, and Ren.
Skizz
Is the ghost haunting Team ZIT’s office. He was murdered by someone he’d thought was a friend who was trying to use his place to hide from the cops, and he’s stuck around, haunting the building. His unfinished business is to make sure nobody else uses the building for anyone shady, but the ghost rumours tended to chase most people off. Eventually he gets used to having Team ZIT around, and when Tango admits he doesn’t really have anywhere to go one day, Skizz eventually makes the decision to finally unlock the still-furnished upper floor for him. He’s bound to the building, but Impulse learns that carrying Skizz’s old vest with them allows him to leave. After that, Skizz sometimes accompanies them on missions and occasionally just hanging out. He’s usually more helpful than the Beetlejhost is.
Stress
Is a witch. Stress lives in Jungle Wood Flats and works as a doctor who specializes in supernaturally caused injuries- Team ZIT are some of her best customers. She also sells magic potions of various kinds, and has a side gig as a florist. She’s 90% of the Jungle inhabitants’ impulse control. Also has cryokinesis.
Tango
The Team ZIT member with a car. He gets possessed with frankly ridiculous frequency, but claims not to believe in ghosts for a long time (and keeps up the bit for even longer). Has developed various signals to indicate when he’s being possessed again. The strongest one, a rather nasty demon Cleo and the Beetlejhost had to team up on, left him with his glowing red eyes. He didn’t really have anywhere to go before Impulse bought the office, and tended to sleep on the couch or in his car until Skizz decided to let him into the upper floor, where he now lives alongside Zedaph and Impulse.
TFC
A now-retired ghostbuster, TFC calls in Team ZIT one night when he finds himself in over his head against a ghost with a grudge. He winds up becoming a bit of a mentor figure to the trio, usually coaching them over the phone if they’re not sure how to deal with one of the stranger spirits. Lost his leg years ago in a fight with a poltergeist that could have gone better, and now has a robotic prosthetic made by Doc.
Wels
While Team ZIT was out investigating some rumour or another in the woods, they came across a large stone box. Following video game logic, I guess, they then decided opening this large stone box sounded like a fun idea. Well, Tango and Zedaph did. Impulse was a bit more hesitant. The box actually held a medieval knight who’d been put in an enchanted sleep for centuries by his demonic doppelgänger, and was very much not prepared for modern life. Team ZIT took him to Xisuma, who happened to live closest, and Wels is currently helping out on the farm and trying to adjust to life in the 21st century. He can understand and speak modern English just fine because magic. Volunteers at the local theatre quite a lot.
Hels
Is Wels’ doppelgänger. Technically a minor demon. Won a fight with Wels and sealed him away for centuries as a result. A recurring problem. His real motivation is that he really desperately doesn’t want to go back to Hell, but he’s too proud to admit it. Lives in the woods with EX, who’s basically his only friend, though the weirdo with the brown cardigan keeps pestering him about his backstory and feelings for some reason. Has minor pyrokinesis.
XB
Like Biffa, XB is also a ghost from the future, though it seems to be a different timeline than Biffa’s. His unfinished business is preventing the apocalypse, but he has no idea how to do that, no idea if he’s in the right timeline, and is pretty sure he’s gone back a lot farther than he probably should’ve. Also, there’s the whole paradox issue, where if he prevents the apocalypse he never has a reason to go back and prevent the apocalypse, so he doesn’t prevent the apocalypse, so he has to go back and- he tries not to think about it too much. He mostly just hangs out in an abandoned house on the edge of town and vibes.
Xisuma
Is a beekeeper. Nobody’s ever seen his face; when he’s not in his beekeeping outfit, he’s either wearing a helmet, or (more recently) an extremely lifelike and detailed animal mask (is it a mask?). Actually a shapeshifting alien, he crashed down to Earth after a scuffle with his evil clone and was stranded because Earth doesn’t have the right tools or resources to repair a spaceship. These days he’s actually found he’s happier tending to his bees, selling honey, and helping his friends out, and probably wouldn’t leave Earth even if he could. It’s a simpler life, but a pleasant one. He bonds with Biffa over a shared love of tea and being stranded in a technologically inferior world and finding a home.
Evil Xisuma
Is Xisuma’s clone. Feels that if everyone’s going to call him ‘Evil’ he may as well own it. Shot his original’s spaceship down in a scuffle but wound up being brought down with him. Currently hides in the woods. Generally more of a minor nuisance than an actual danger. Used to spend his free time bothering X but has gotten put off by Wels, who has a problem when it comes to evil clones. His friends consist of Hels, who is a terrible role model, and Zedaph, who’s trying to help him work through his problems behind everyone’s backs. Can summon lightning because he deserves it.
Zedaph
Is the reason Team ZIT is ghostbusting in the first place. He’s a sheep shearer by trade, but that’s a fairly seasonal thing and ghostbusting is more fun anyway. Has somehow never been possessed, and claims it’s because he’s always standing next to Tango. He makes sure the other two gets enough sleep Because we all know they can’t be trusted to do it. Probably has some sort of really bizarre and situational magical powers he is thoroughly unaware of. Qualified to be a licensed therapist. Made friends with Evil X at one point, somehow.
Zloy
Like Cleo, he’s a ghost possessing a corpse. Unlike Cleo, there’s a good chance it’s not his corpse. Eh, it’s not like anyone else was using it. Runs a blog with Pixl, because why not. Was already a zombie when he met Pixl, who was still alive at the time. His body is a bit more decayed than Cleo’s, but it’s fine. His goggles are enchanted with the same preservation spell; it’s not really ever explained where he got them from. Has no regard for privacy but is fortunately unable to turn invisible or phase through walls due to inhabiting a physical body. Both can theoretically physically fight ghosts and has enough time to physically fight ghosts, meaning he would be a valuable ally if he could be bothered. Lives in a graveyard. Has an ongoing ‘feud’ with Cleo, in which he puts jabs at her on the blog. Once spent a week as a (very sarcastic) floating potato.
Hermiton
Is the name of the place they all live in/near. Located in an ambiguous location in an ambiguous country, Hermiton is technically large enough to be considered a city but has Town VibesTM. Supernatural going-ons are a fairly normal part of life, and a good number of inhabitants aren’t humans. Despite this, the wider world seems mostly ignorant of the existence of ghosts, magic, etc. I’m not too sure about geography, but it’s surrounded by forest in most directions and in a warm enough climate to not have snow in the winter (so Python doesn’t, you know, freeze to death). Most people don’t tend to bat an eyelid at strange-looking people walking down the street or serving them at the store; they’re used to it by now. There are several theories as to why Hermiton specifically has so much going on when it comes to the supernatural- ley lines, secretly the resting place of some long-forgotten god, et cetera- but it’s actually more of a case of ‘people who have supernatural traits hear rumours of a place where a lot of people have supernatural traits and go there in search of answers/a place to belong’. This doesn’t exactly explain where all the ghosts came from, but hey. Nothing’s perfect.

I love how dynamic the v3 cast is just on their own like each one of them is full of personality so much so I can just put any one of them in any setting and bam just got a funny situation with potential. It’s because of this that it’s so fun to play around with mini group subsections of the cast, like obviously their all friends (non despair au) but like I could go to a generator n just pick out like three of them and shove them into a small friend group and have so much fun (especially if-
-they’re characters that rarely or don’t interact in game (sorry training trio and traffic light girls)
OH BIG AGREE ANON! So I’m a big fan of platonic interactions and I love to shuffle up who would be friends and hang out with who in other scenarios and if you don’t mind I’d love to list some from my unlikely friendships that winded up working really well in my DnD au’s outside of the game world, since it’s a regular highschool non-Hope’s Peak au.So my favourite that came out of it was Tsumugi & Himiko as friends. Both of them are very into drama in shows they like, be it anime or soaps, and I think they would actually probably watch some of the same stuff. Himiko’s mage excitement could easily channel into an interest in Tsumugi’s cosplay and I can totally see them going to cons together. Tsumugi’s the one who invites Himiko to the DnD group so she has a closer friend there.Kokichi, Kaede and Kaito as a friend group is a FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. These three are the core friend group in my AU, but they all have their own friends outside of the trio too. Kokichi hangs with Miu & Gonta, Kaede hangs with Shuichi sometimes, and other times she’s hopping around the girls in the class. Kaito has his more jock group with Ryoma, Maki and Tenko at times, but he’s also friends with Kiibo because Kiibo will always listen to his stories all the way through and as a ton of questions!Korekiyo, Kirumi, Shuichi & Himiko are a book club. Rantaro’s invited too but he misses meetings when he travels, so sometimes when he’s there they recap the last two or three book discussions so he’s still in the loop and able to give his thoughts.I mentioned it briefly above but I like Kaito and Kiibo, because it’s a good dynamic of feedback, because Kaito loves to talk and Kiibo loves to learn and I think with the right prompting Kaito would never shut up and would love to keep going on forever.
BUT there are so many other combinations that can work and I love having time to think about them all. Sorry for hijacking your ask to ramble about my AU anon, but you’re right! There’s enough variety in personalities that all sorts of friend group can work, even beyond the usual sets

Do you have any other superportal AU HCs? What does the media generally say about Lady Valor? Maladroid? Is there a conspiracy community drawing up dumb ideas as to who Valor is? (E.g. It's [famous actress who lives across the country]?) does the media manage to get interviews with either of them? Does Chell or Lady Valor use ASL either bc she doesn't like to talk and/or throw out the possibility of voice recognition?
Chell Chambers is far more taciturn than Lady Valor since she tries to just sorta blend into the crowd most of the time. Part of the reason LV’s real identity is able to be kept more-or-less secret is simply because very few people are even aware Chell exists, and most of those that do know her would think she was far too shy and reserved to be a superhero. (Honestly, even in the original game, I imagine most of the people who knew Chell before she got mixed up in Aperture wouldn’t have expected her to be capable of half the things we see her do either. You know what they say about how you should Beware the Quiet Ones.)
(…Really if you think about it, being A Known Introvert is probably one of the best covers for being a superhero out there, since if people don’t see you for a while they’d just assume you’re cooped up in your house avoiding socialization. And if you need to duck out of public events unexpectedly to go fight crime, you can just claim you’re overstimulated and need to go recharge somewhere xP.)
Lady Valor makes an effort to expose corruption in the city wherever she can as well as put the smackdown on petty crime, so the citizens are grateful to have her even before Maladroid shows up. The government and Aperture Enterprises less so, but her popularity means they can’t really do much without a whole lot of backlash.
Sometimes she’s available for comment when the arrest of a criminal she helped catch hits the news. VERY rarely she’ll agree to appear on a talk show.
Maladroid, as mentioned before, rarely carries out his schemes in person, instead using his drones/robot minions to do things remotely and taking over monitors to communicate with the public. This is because he is very protective of his physical location at all times. He uses his powers to make it practically impossible to track his IP or any broadcast signals he emits as well. For a while, Lady Valor is the only person to actually interact face-to-face with him.
As I’m sure you can imagine, this makes getting interviews with him difficult. He has a very active social media account though~.
The citizens of Caveopolis are appropriately frightened of him at first, but as time goes on and Lady Valor proves she’s got him under control (not that he’s even particularly trying to hurt anyone), they gradually come to see him as entertaining at best and a nuisance at worst. Sure he’s not much of a threat to their safety, but hijacking the wifi and interrupting TV broadcasts is its own kind of evil.
There is almost certainly a whole section of the internet dedicated to the Supers Of Caveopolis fandom, with everything that implies: cosplay, Lady Valor and/or Maladroid in parodies of famous posters and paintings, thirsty fanart of both of them, posts lamenting that while Lady Valor’s exact ethnicity is unknown she is CLEARLY NOT WHITE and so could y’all please stop drawing her that way. And of course, fanfiction. Lots and lots of fanfiction.
A good chunk of it is speculation about Lady Valor and Maladroid’s reasons for going into superheroism and supervillainy, respectively. Some people propose that LV is an heiress who wanted to give back to the community in an active way rather than just throwing money at the world’s problems; Others suggest she’s from another planet. A few fics portray her and Maladroid as constantly trying to one-up each other from childhood, with their super-antics just being the latest stage in their rivalry. Nearly everyone (pretty much accurately) pegs Maladroid’s constant shilling of his own brilliance as being borne out of insecurity. Several pick up on the fact that his Received Pronunciation is put-on, though very few are able to correctly guess his real accent (Irish, Australian, cockney, and even American or Canadian are all suggestions).
Probably 90% of the fanfiction involves shipping Mal and LV together. A lot of the time she’s portrayed as winning him over to the side of good, though occasionally it’s the other way around. Undoubtedly there exists a small sub-genre of fics where Maladroid is written as way more evil-in-a-sexy-way than he really is and he and Lady Valor get into some… intense situations. And of course some fics involve them meeting in their civilian identities (“Valerie” is a pretty popular headcanon for what Lady Valor’s real name might be. Maladroid’s tend to be a lot more all over the place).
Chell may or may not know about any of this, but Wheatley definitely does and he reads ALL of it. There might even be one or two occasions where he quotes a really good line from one of the fics directly during a face-off and the part of the internet that knows about it goes wild xP.

In light of tumblr actually committing suicide, I’m feeling nostalgic and would like to tell you all about my first real online community experience. Because everybody always has their MySpace or LiveJournal stories... and I was never on either of those.
I want to tell you about a site that is called Animexx. And... it changed a lot since I was really active on it and it was by far never perfect, but at its skeletal structure, it’s something I am still seeking out and I genuinely don’t understand why such a type of site doesn’t exist in a broader, English context. Let me rephrase that to make it clearer: It’s a German site... well... there seems to be a .com version that’s actually English, but somehow everything still shows up in German so I don’t know about that. And, as the name might suggest, it is primarily focused on anime/manga/Jpop.
So, this is less of a recommendation and more of a... pitch of my dream online-experience, based on how that site worked, with some side-notes on upgrades. But, at its core, it’s essentially a mixture of DeviantArt, Fanfiction.Net, tumblr and then some more.
(I’ll be talking in past-tense because I haven’t really been on the site in 10 years so I genuinely don’t know what changed and what is still the same.)
Fanworks
Obviously. Only that the site had different partitions for different types of fanworks. Not like tumblr where everything is just one endless pit that you get lost in.
You had fanarts, that were sorted by TV show/movie/book/band/whatever so you could actually go and properly look for them. It’s one of the things I hate about DeviantArt; that you don’t have specific categories to post fanarts under in the same way you’d do it with fics on FFNet/AO3 so you can browse specifically for them. In my ideal world, we would also add a tagging-function like on AO3 for it, including things such as pairing tags and character tags so you could actually find shit easier.
You had fanfiction. WITH a tagging function - just like on AO3. AND you had ONE feature that I AM STILL DEARLY MISSING. Seriously, both FFNet and AO3 make me bemoan the loss of the Character Descriptions.
See, you’d click on the fic and firstly be presented with the fic’s main page. A list of all chapters, the tags, the summary and the stats. And above it are tags.
You can (still, as proven by fresh and new screenshot) upload character profiles, including a picture of the character and a chart with whatever information you want to give - name/age/whatever. Which, particularly in AUs is immensely practical. “Wait what magical creature was that again?”.
Tumblr media
And not just that. The tab right next to “Characters”? “Illustrations”. Since the site itself hosts fanarts too, you could directly mark the art you upload as an illutration to a specific fic and they’d then be linked to connect with each other.
Now, granted, their fanfiction system is not perfect - there are a lot of rules/censoring. But this very system? The system of including additional character information and allowing a direct link between a fic and its illustrations? That is perfect. And I miss it very dearly.
And fanfiction and fanarts aren’t where fanworks end. It also had its own doujinshi - comic - site. Because that is also a thing I hate on DeviantArt. If you’re lucky, someone posting a comic will also include a link to the last page in the description. No. On here, comics worked just like fanfiction in that you have it all together. They too are separated into chapters, if the author so pleases, and you can just subscribe to a comic like you’d do to a fanfiction. Seriously, how has this function not reached DeviantArt yet...? This site has had it for literal eighteen years now...
Photos also had their separate sub-site, like cosplay photos and such.
Now, nowadays and with my experience here on tumblr, on an ideal website we would also add a separate GIF-site to it.
Community
For one, your profile is way more elaborate than on... any other site I’ve seen. Aside from many options on what to put on it - like multiple profile pics, multiple tabs on your biography (mostly used to linking to other things... that is actually why my FFNet profile looks the way it does, because that’s how I used to keep it in the olden days, only that I would actually be able to separate the timeline and the updating schedule onto different tags for easier access...).
You also had a guestbook, much like how you can publically comment on people’s profiles on DeviantArt.
It also had a direct link to your personal blog. Which, you don’t have to use obviously, but yeah. There’s also a blogging function.
Of course it also has a private messaging function. Only that it’s actually a good and proper one. I love that FFNet has one, but it sucks because it’s just all clogging up your inbox. No, this site has one that works essentially like your average e-mail account; you can create folders and sort your fucking mail like a civilized person.
Additonally to the private messaging function, there is also a chat on here.
There is also an RPG community. Not like on tumblr where just... everything is everywhere and whatever. It’s neatly separated, just like the fics and fanarts and comics and photos. Everything has its place. Seriously, why are American sites so fucking unorganized, it drives me crazy.
Now, the best part about the community were the Circles. That’s what they were called. They’re forums, really. Clubs, kinda.
You could start one about... whatever. Like, dedicated to a particular ship. And you, as the admin, could then proceed however you want. Public? Or only after applying, meaning that the admin had to let you in. Especially after meeting the phenomenon of antis, I miss this dearly, because... just imagining having a Circle for fans of your “problematic fave” and moderating who gets in - meaning only letting in actual fans of the character - so they can safely post about them there.
Each Circle included multiple forums, however many you want. Say, one generally talking about the ship, one about that chara, one about the other, another about gift exchanges, fic recommendations, or literally whatever you want.
And a Circle could directly link to its members’ fanfiction and fanarts - or well those relevant for the Circle at hand.
Those were really where the sense of community came from. You had your... yeah, your safe space to talk about whatever you loved with other people who also love it. No risk of publically posting about your fave and some dumbass hijacking the post or bullying you about it. You just had your forums inside the Circle and got to talk about what you love.
There is much more that the site had to offer - a direct shop where fanartists could sell merch and printed versions of their comics, an event page where you could easily find fan-events near you (or far away from you, depending on what you’re looking for), heck it even doubled as a dating site - but that just to sum up what I really miss about this site and how it worked.
And I just... I genuinely don’t understand why such a thing, in this day and age of fandom being so huge, doesn’t exist on a broader scale, in a mainly English-speaking context. A site that seamlessly unites the different aspects of fandom - fanarts, fanfiction, fan-comics, community and blogging.
Both DeviantArt and tumblr are a garbage mess, let’s be very clear on that, because they allow absolutely no way of properly and easily accessing only fanworks to one specific fandom. It’s not like sorting into fandoms is a new thing; fanfiction does it even on fucking Fanfiction.Net so why does it seem so wild for non-fanfiction sites to also include such a function...? Not to mention, when talking about those two examples, a proper and neat separation of the different types of fanworks. Yes, a rudimentary system exists, but... not a clear-cut and simple one, for some reason.
For me, who I come from a site that united all sides of fandom so easily and for free, it has always been absolutely beyond me that you need different accounts on different sites for your different fandom-experience - tumblr for blogging, DeviantArt for a half-way good system on fanarts, AO3/FFNet for fanfiction (and yes, I know many just post everything on tumblr, but with how it is indistinguishable when it comes to looking for specific things, this is clearly not what tumblr was really meant to do...).
I just want... one site to unite them all but also do it systematically and not in one hot-mess pile of EVERYTHING where you have to entirely rely on luck and tags, instead of sub-categories of a) types of fanwork and b) fandoms. Seriously, it can’t be that hard and it has literally been around for eighteen years now in Germany. Is it just because we Germans like to be organized, or what...?
And, to end this post: If you actually know such a site, drop me a link. If you feel inspired and make such a site, also drop me a link.

Dynamic | pt. i
Tumblr media
[ back to masterlist ]
Scenario: Superhero AU Pairing: Chen/Reader Word Count: 1830 Rating: T (warning for language)
Summary: You’re the leading superhero of the city, and you’ve fought Dynamo for years. It’s the way it should be - good vs. evil, hero vs. villain. But what happens when a bigger evil threatens everything?
next part >>
The warehouse is dark. Really dark.
Your steps echo on the damp concrete ground, your bright fuschia suit dull and grey in the small light that streams through the holes in the roofing. You would use your powers to move around, maybe find a good hiding spot – but damn, it was getting even darker. You can barely see a thing. From memory you know there should be a mezzanine lining the back wall and a couple of storage units right about –
“Fuck!” you hiss as you crash into something heavy and metal. There was the storage unit, so the mezzanine stairs should be to your left. Maybe you can hide up there to get a good look at the playing field. If only it weren’t so goddamned dark. Your arch nemesis really had great taste.
A buzzing crack lights the air behind you in bright fluorescence. Too late. You whirl around on your heel, raising your Protogun. As if it would help – all the sonic pulses would dissipate too quickly at this range.
A figure floats right above the giant doorway you’d entered through, illuminated eerily by the lightning crackling over his hands and over his arms. He wears a matte black helmet that lets you see none of his face. You know who it is, though.
“Have you been there the whole time, Dynamo?” you growl, your voice echoing back at you. You don’t lower your gun. Your posture stiffens, muscles tensing, ready to move. In the light coming off him you scout out a few landings you could spring to if you needed, and a large hulking object that looked sturdy enough to guard from any fire.
He doesn’t say anything, just chuckles, and suddenly he’s whizzing towards you, still floating. Damn those Hoverboots. You’ve been wanting those for ages, but they’re just too expensive. Besides, you’re hard enough to catch on your own.
Dynamo stops about twenty feet away, the electricity still rippling over his body. “I could have struck you anytime, and you never would have seen it coming.” He throws his head back and laughs again.
This irks you more than you want to admit. “Well, why didn’t you!”
“You did invite me to a fair duel. As far as I know, striking you unawares is cheating.”
You scowl.
“See? I’m not so evil, after all.” You know behind that mask he’s grinning, even though you’ve never seen his face.
You shift your weight from foot to foot, feeling foolish. “Let’s just start.”
“Yes, m’lady.” And then, in a flash, his lightning bolts are shooting out towards you in a wide arc. Your eyes go wide and you move just as quickly, blinking out of view and reappearing fifteen feet in the air, just above the attack. You know if you teleport closer it’ll just be easier for him to strike. You need to play smarter.
Thing is, he usually outwits you.
As you fall back to the ground, you fire a pulse from your gun. It’s a lucky shot. Hit him in the leg. Even at this distance, the pulses are still too weak to do any real damage. You’d increase the power setting, but this is a duel, not an actual battle. Anything lethal is forbidden - and that includes your primary weapon, the Blade.
Dynamo barely flinches at the shot. He responds with two bolts of lightning instead, crackling along the ground like whips, moving along the damp floor right toward you. You blink out and reappear right behind him, pushing the gun straight into the small of his back. Before you can pull the trigger, you feel the electricity moving through the gun and into your hand. The muscle spasms and you’re forced to let go. You blink, moving in the air and vaulting up onto the mezzanine.
There’s your gun, though. On the ground. Right next to him. You spit out a few choice words.
His laugh carries up to you. “Dynamo, one. Rush, zero. Try again?” He tosses your gun up into the air and you catch it. It’s powered off, probably fried by his lightning. You swear again and smack it with your palm, hard. Nothing.
“I’m going to get you-”
“Not if I get you first!” He’s laughing. This is fun for him – he isn’t taking it seriously. He isn’t taking you seriously. You grit your teeth. You won’t let him win again.
He gathers his lightning up in his hands again, a dense ball of crackling electricity that you recognize as one of his “signature moves.”
You smile. Maybe it’s time to try out a signature move of your own.
Just as the lightning leaves his hand, you drop into a crouch. Then you blink. You’re at his feet. He sees you, but it’s too late. You sweep your leg out in a wide circle, knocking him onto his back. His helmet hits the ground with a thunk. Then you’re on top of him, ignoring the little shocks of electricity where the fabric of your suit touches his. He can kill you anytime. Pump a lethal amount of electricity into your body and stop your heart.
But this is a duel. You smile, your hands around his throat tightening and your knees on either side, pinning him down. “If I had my Blade, you would be dead.”
“If you had your Blade, this wouldn’t be a fair duel.” He sounds annoyed, like he can’t believe you actually cornered him. The score is evened.
Your smile grows sickly sweet. “Exactly.” You climb off him and extend your hand to help him up. “I hope you pay me back for the Protogun you ruined. Those are expensive.”
Dynamo takes your hand. A strong shock runs through it, more powerful than the last one. “Fucking ow! You asshole!” You drop his hand and clutch yours. He laughs hard, slapping the ground.
“There,” he breathes in between bursts of laughter. “Payment.”
“Screw you, Dynamo, what the hell?” The shock’s gone now, but your hand still throbs.
He gets to his feet and hovers so that you have to crane your neck back almost painfully. “That’s what you get for knocking me on my back with no warning.”
“It was a fight! What did you expect me to do, hug you?”
“I wouldn’t complain if you did.” You could imagine that devilish grin again.
“I know you can’t see behind my mask, but I hope you know I’m rolling my eyes really hard right now.”
“Thanks for telling me.” He starts to move backwards. You can still hear the smile in his voice.
“Thanks for letting me know I entertain you so much!”
“Thanks for almost shooting me point-blank!”
“Again, it was a fucking fight!” You have to yell to reach him at the far end of the warehouse. “Fuck off, Dynamo!”
You hear him laugh as he flies up and out of an open window. So that’s how he got in. Sighing, you just walk over to your dead Protogun and pick it back up. Hopefully your nerdy roommates will know how to rewire it.
You close your eyes and think of the little abandoned shed not too far from here, where you stashed your clothes and other weapons. Teleporting long distances usually takes a lot of energy, so you try not to jump into places with a lot of people. Like your house, for example. Neither of your roommates actually know you're, well, a superhero. They just think you're unusually obsessed with cosplaying Rush, which isn’t out of the ordinary. Rush is pretty popular, if you say so yourself.
You open your eyes, and you're in the shed. Your pink backpack is right where you left it, covered by an old cardboard box. You pull it out and rummage for your clothes, quickly stripping out of your supersuit and pulling on the old jeans and t-shirt. Then, your glasses. You pull your hair out of its high ponytail and let it hang down around your face. Like this - quiet, mousy Y/N - nobody could ever confuse you for Rush, the badass, foulmouthed superhero that’s been saving the city for years.
Saving it from none other than Dynamo, of course.
There are a couple of other villains here and there, but Dynamo is a supervillain. He usually pulls off the big stuff, like bank heists and plane hijackings and whatnot. But you've been fighting each other for so long that you felt almost like...friends.
Friends that tried to kill each other, anyway.
You pack everything up and sling the backpack on your back. Then you step out of the shed and onto a quiet street in the suburbs.
You know this area well enough, you guess. You’re a volunteer teacher at the district elementary school, and quite a few of your students live in this neighborhood. That's how you found this shed, tucked away near a patch of forest, and set up base.
Hiking your pack higher on your shoulders, you start down the pavement, pulling your phone out of your pocket as you walk.
3 new messages.
One was a marketing message. You deleted it. The other two were from your roommate, Kyungsoo.
Soo: Hey Y/N Soo: I'll be out this weekend, I'm visiting some friends. Just letting you know
You quickly tap out a reply.
Y/N: No problem Soo, thanks for the heads-up!
The phone drops from your hands as you collide with something solid for the second time today. You watch in horror as a crack slashes across the screen.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry, are you all right?"
You look up into the eyes of a guy, maybe a few years older than you. He’s flushed and slightly sweaty, like he's been running.
"No, no, it's my fault, I should know better than to text while walking-" You laugh nervously as he bends over to pick up the phone for you. When he notices the crack he frowns, almost pouting. “I’m sorry, I can get that fixed for you.”
“It’s totally okay,” you say, smiling again. “No worries at all. Sorry for crashing into you?”
He grins, the corners of his mouth turning up and his eyes crinkling into half-moons. “It’s good. I wasn’t looking where I was going either.” His smile turns sheepish. “Hey, do you live around here? I don’t recognize you.”
“No, um, I’m just passing through,” you say, laughing nervously again.
“Oh. Nice meeting you. I’m Jongdae,” he says, holding his hand out. You grasp it uncertainly and shake, once, your skin tingling oddly where it touches his. Damn nerves. “I’m Y/N, nice to meet you too.”
“See you around, Y/N,” he says, then shoves his hands in his pockets and starts off, whistling a light tune.
You look at your hand. It’s still tingling. Then you look back at him as he walks away. He was handsome, sure, but handsome enough to give you butterflies all over? You shake your head and head off, too.

Sorry, maybe I'm not reading it right, but can you uh.. explain the bracket idea a little better for me? Or just dumb it down, because I can't wrap my head around it. I'm sorry! T_T
No problem! I can see how it can be confusing. I’ll try to put actual prompt ideas to the numbers, that might make it easier.
(Please note these are just examples and are not necessarily what the prompts will be!)
Let’s say these are the eight prompts you guys vote for:
Dance Battle
Punk/Nerd AU
Vacation
Sports AU
Cosplay
Role Swap
Hogwarts AU
Proposal
For the first four days (March 1-4), Dance Battle will compete against Punk/Nerd AU. The way that works is people can choose to submit works based on either Dance Battle or Punk/Nerd. At the end of those four days, whichever prompt receives more submissions will win and move on to Round 2 (starting on March 19th).
Next, March 5-8, Vacation will compete against Sports AU. Same as before, whichever prompt gets more fills will move on to Round 2.
So let’s say Punk/Nerd AU, Vacation, Cosplay, and Hogwarts AU all win their respective battles. Now, Punk/Nerd AU and Vacation will face off against each other, and Cosplay will face off against Hogwarts AU. Same as before, each battle will get four days for you guys to submit works for either prompt.
Now let’s say Punk/Nerd AU and Hogwarts AU win. In the final four days (March 28-31), they will face off against each other. Whichever prompt gets the most fills during this period will win Hijack March Madness!
I hope that made things a bit clearer! Please let me know if there are any other questions!
