a sapphic lit primer 🌸
also known as, an opportunity to insist you read my favourites
if you’ve ever found yourself wanting to read more sapphic books, but not quite sure where to start, let this be the post for you! if you’re looking for even more sapphic books, i hope you find something in here too.
there are a few books on here i’ve not read, that i wanted to include to raise awareness of them, more than anything. those are marked by *. as such, you will probably also see a fair few more well known books and authors missed off (but i promise i know about them!).
this is not meant to be at all exhaustive! it’s a collection of sapphic books that i’ve read and would rec, meaning there are still tons more out there. & you can find some of those more at @sapphicreadsdb, readsrainbow (which i co-run with @tenderpotter), sapphiclitbot on twitter & my list of every sapphic book i’ve read.
as ever, this was meant to be a relatively short post. haha.
(i promise i did put links on this post, but for some reason those aren’t working on the blog page. dashboard version seems fine, i think.)

💀 gimme your finest frights hc's please
When someone actually asks abt my FazFright HCs:
Tumblr media
Okayyy soo, idk where to start but let's go! (this took me like 3 fucking days)
-AU takes place in like 2012-2013 but sometimes there will be stuff from like 2014-2017(or even later) in there
-Umm so first I took insperation from your hurricane paranormal society thing so most of my Fazbear Frights are in some group/organization to discuss "weird" things that they've seen, heard or that have happend to them, Greg is the founder(?) ig, cause he started it some little blog thing and ppl started adding their own stories, so it basically became some online group thing, then they started meeting up irl
-Order that people joined in: Sarah, Oscar, Isaac, Raj, Millie, Reed, Toby, Tabitha, Pete, Julius, Devon, Kelsey and Oswald
-Greg Chapman is Native Hawaiian/Polynesian, he was born December 16th, 1997 and is 15yrs old,
He has a tan/brown skin tone like Carmen ltran (@carmenltran)’s,
complete heterochromia (left eye: blue, right eye: brown) and hooded eyes,
somewhat thin lips (darker upper lip),
a downturned nose, curve starts at the dorsal bridge,
12inch, thin 2A, honey blonde hair, has a choppy wolf cut with shaggy bangs kinda style (he did it himself, or at least he tried❤️),
5’7, slender + he has a lot of freckles across his cheeks and nose and on his body
Has BDD, MDD, and ASD/Autism (Undiagnosed)
Knows some Hawaiian, primarily knows/speaks English
Likes artists like Brent Faiyaz, Steve Lacy, Kali Uchis, Gorillaz, Mother Mother, I Monster, Jack Stauber, Lemon Demon, Will Wood, Tally Hall, Roar, Surf Curse, The Cardigans, TV Girl, Alex G, Mitski, bôa, Caravan Palace, Glass Animals, The Stokes, Radiohead, Hot Freaks, Two Door Cinema Club, Foster The People, Tommy Newport, Cage The Elephant, Tame Impala, Mac DeMarco, Men I trust, Maya Hawke, Eyedress, Wham!, The Cure, The White Stripes, Tears For Fears, The Clash, Queen, October Country, Kate Bush, Sohodolls, The Dresden Dolls, The Crane Wives, Harry Nilsson, Grover Washington, Jr., Marvin Gaye, Gloria Gaynor, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc.
Greg was a nervous wreck when he started the group I mean people could think he was crazy and he was meeting new, random people on the internet + when they planned to meet up he had to come up some sort of excuse for his dad for why all of a sudden he'd constantly be leaving the house, he'd use Hadi and Cyril as an excuse most of the time (even if they weren't talking that much anymore and he was kinda avoiding them) since if he said he had other friends his dad would probably give him a whole interrogation
Contortionist
He got a bonsai tree to take care of, it’s sort of a distraction but he still enjoys it, most of what he does is a distraction anyway
Still does yoga before bed and also still really into science
He likes a lot of "girly" or "childish" things like MLP, dolls, etc.
Kinda isolates himself now so usually stays in his room watching Musicals, trying to get into new books, listening to music, doing random stuff on his laptop, etc
He got into paranormal/supernatural stuff like contacting the dead after the incident (he mostly did it because he wanted to “contact” Kimberly)
He thinks of the “Fazbear Frights” group as a safe place
Has a tinyyy (huge) crush on Millie
-Sarah .G. Patel, her mom is Indian and her dad was Zimbabwean, born April 1st 1997, 15yrs,
Has a brown skin tone like Kiara Pike's
dark brown, slender/thin almond eyes

round, broad nose with a slight bump on the dosal bridge
wide, two-toned lips (darker upper lip, pinker lower lip), kinda prominent cupid’s bow
Dark chocolate brown, mid-length, thick, coiled, 4B afro
5’5, Chubby + has nose, cheek and body freckles and crooked teeth
Has BDD, Bulimia and HPD (Kind of aware abt the Bulimia, well she at least is kinda aware abt eating disorders)

Definitely gonna make her a Constance Blackwood and/or Sayori kinnie
TBB was some sort of fever dream or something, or at least that's what it seems like
She's a bit more closed off at school and home, mostly talks to the others at the FF group
She's friends(ig) with Oscar, Tabitha(H&S) and Greg
-Millie Liú Fitzsimmons, Millie’s mom is half Puerto Rican (has Spanish and Native American descent) and half Irish, and her dad is Chinese-American, Born April 28 1997, 15yrs old

5’3, Chubby and slightly curvy + has fang-like canines and dark blue braces with elastics
Wears black frame, semi-rimless, Ray-ban Clubmaster perscription glasses with a CosTimo/Weewooday glasses chain (cross or bat ones, mostly cross) + most of the time wears full gothic makeup
Has MDD and ASD/Autism (Undiagnosed)

Lovecraft and Tim Burton fan
She and Kelsey are close family "friends", kinda consider eachother cousins, mostly Kelsey, he'll call Millie's parents "Auntie" and "Uncle" and just stuff like that (Millie is very against it)
She's a Romantic Goth
Got into baking recently, asking Kelsey would help a bit since knows more about it but...
Got into drawing as well
Loves humming and singing out loud but almost never does it
Not sure why she ended up joining the group
Usually doing her own thing, has a bit of small talk with people like Sarah and Greg, talks to Tabitha(Hide and Seek) the most
-Julius' thing was moved
-Devon .B. Miranda, his mom is Jamaican and his dad was Cuban (of Taíno descent), Born June 8th 1997, 15yrs old

14inch, black, medium sized, dreads/locs (Interlocked)

he loves horror, from Goosebumps to Stephan King to H.P Lovecraft to Saw, even The Hills Have Eyes, and he also really loves highly disturbing and graphic stuff (he just really wants to see gore and guts) but Mick HATES horror so he never got to watch it with him much, Kelsey is more into gothic and psychological horror but at the same time he does like the thought of just watching a bunch of gore even if it has no plot, there's a VHS rental near his house, it's pretty rundown but it has a lot of his favorites
Had pretty bad seperation anxiety with Mick
He has a bad habit of biting, he bites his nails, chews on the strings of his Hoodies, there are bite marks on his hands/arms, for some concerning reason...(Just like me fr<3)

Interested in Physics and Chemistry + he likes photography and Literature (Drama and Novels)

full, wide, two toned lips (upper lip slightly darker than his skin tone lower lip pinkish-brown color) and a somewhat prominent cupid's bow
Ample(?), 5’1.5 + has a lot of nose and cheek freckles, also has body freckles
Voice HC: "Wybie" Wyborn Lovat (Robert Bailey Jr.), Can speak English and Spanish
Has ADHD (Undiagnosed)
His arm is almost completely healed (it was fractured) but there’s a huge, weird, bite mark looking scar on his right arm
Likes drawing, has had around 2 sketchbooks, first one was just an old, mostly empty notebook he found and his current one is a proper sketchbook that he begged his dad to get him, it’s black has a stickers on the outside, it’s mostly filled with sketches of his usual cartoonish drawings including the mechanical animals
Definitely has/uses a Nokia (2600)
Likes Mangas and Animes like: Nana, JoJo, Death Note, Soul Eater (and Soul Eater Not), Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, Black Butler, One Piece, Hunter×Hunter, etc.
Likes I Monster, Harry Nilsson, Earth, Wind and Fire, Foster The People, Gorillaz, Tame Impala, Tommy Newport P, GHOST (and pals), Guchiri/y, Kikuo, Moe Shop, Maretu, etc.
His gaming console is the Nintendo Gamecube “Orange Spice” and he really likes “the Legend of Zelda” games and Shadow the Hedgehog (game and character), He also likes Princess Daisy, Lemmy Koopa, Kirby, Meta Knight, Eevee, Knuckles, etc.
After his Grandma died he ended up moving to Colorado, Kelsey babysitted him most of the time since his parents were out/busy, he still does it from time to time, with pay ofc
Was only brought to the group later because Kelsey was babysitting him and Devon insisted it was fine if they just brought him with
Talks to almost no one there, usually just the others being "friendly" because he's a kid, Kelsey just let's him play on his DSI since he understands why he wouldn't want to be here
-Sadly I don't have much to say abt Reed, Pete, Oscar, Isaac or Raj, it's been a while since I read their books, but moving on
Millie thinks Tabitha(H&S) is actually pretty (really) cool, she's really confident, talkative, friendly and, loud, but Millie dosen't mind that much, though she acts like she does (she def has a crush on her)
Millie and Oswald talk from time to time, mostly about their "spoiled" cats (they mean it in an affectionate way<3)
No one there is really close with Sarah, I mean there’s Dev maybe but she doesn’t want to make anything seem more than it is (I know this sounds like she has a crush or something but I mostly, mean in a platonic way, like she doesn’t want to make it seem as if they’re close friends when they’re less than that, I say mostly because I actually may make her have a “crush” on him for like comphet reasons) she's mostly just the sweet one and that's about it, she's a bit creeped out by Kelsey though, catches him staring a lot (y'know it's funny, usually she'd be honored if a cute boy was staring at her)
Julius restraining the urge to claw out Reed's eyes every group meet up<3
Julius also desperately needs a wheelchair (walking with crutches for such a long period of time gets tiring) but his parents can't exactly afford it
At group meetings Kelsey literally talks to no one BUT Devon (and well, Oswald) like I don't even mean he only has conversations with him I mean if he isn't talking to him he'll just be standing or wandering around looking lost and shit (he thinks the others seem nice but he can barely even make eye contact)
My AU's Kelsey isn't an entity or whatever he's just a weirdo and got into some concerning shit (kinda like Vanny basically) + Kelsey doesn't get lured into the suit, Dev was planning to but Kelsey got really apologetic and shit and it kinda made him feel like awkward and guilty, Dev was still kinda considering it but then Mick kinda interfered
Kelsey does go missing the same day he was supposed to die, Mick and Devon don't tell anyone about the fact that they were kinda the last people who were aware of his whereabouts, etc.
Either way Kelsey doesn't die (kinda) so that's the important thing
Kelsey has some weird mini Freddy Fazbear robot-doll thing that he keeps in his room, Dev says it's cool but Mick thinks it's, off(Yes, it's a Lonley Freddy, Yes, it's Alec)(when one of your 7-8th grade besties is trapped in some weird robot doll thing you have and you don't even know😋)

The chapter begins with a page showing Present Mic and Kurogiri. Next we see a weather report broadcast from Washington DC, with the reporter saying that a giant cloud has suddenly appeared in Japan.
She says that air currents can cause the cloud to reach as far as North America and that meteorologists attribute its emergence to the encounter of heat waves in various parts of the country. In this moment, we see panels of Shouto, Dabi, and Endeavor from previous chapters.
Just as the butterfly effect says that the flapping of a butterfly's wings in Brazil can cause a hurricane in Texas, perhaps the glowing baby led to the chaos that is unleashed in Paranormal society at this moment. She begins to say that the world can be changed by the power of a single person, and this is why AFO is such a remarkable presence.

The broadcast is cut off and the focus shifts to Kamino. Shoto wonders how Dabi can still move when everyone else is exhausted.
Dabi thinks to himself that Gunga is too far away and that he wouldn't be able to finish off Shoto and go there afterwards. He then starts flying in the opposite direction and Shoto realizes that he wants to go to where Endeavor is.
Burnin' realizes that his body will not hold out for long and Shoto tries to taunt him into giving up and fighting him instead. However, at the same moment, Skeptic contacts him and says that there won't be any trip expenses. It is then that a portal opens in front of him.

Shows I'm Currently Watching
Hilda Hurricane/ Hilda Furracao
Tumblr media
So I saw this particular sequence of scenes(? this is why I'm not a published author I don't know the difference) on Tiktok , and I'm not going to lie it immediately sparked my interest. I don't know if it's the forbidden romance or the yearning (have I mentioned I'm a big fan of yearning and seemingly unrequited love?), or religious trauma, but I had to watch it.
Also, the show is turning how to be so much more than expected. How often the church ignores the people on the fringe of society. The scare of communism and how it affects the poor and anyone different from them. Ugh, there's so much to say. It's great!
I'm only on episode 4 (I'm watching it with my sister so it's slow going) and I'm dying to get to this scene.
A quick observation of this gif based on the few episodes I've seen (it really helps establish their personalities, their struggles, and motivations and of course, the environment around them and how it shapes them): Malthus has been struggling with his sexuality since becoming a monk. His friends constantly test his resolve but Malthus stays resolute and doesn't give in to "earthly temptations." His purity and dedication to his faith are the reasons why he's quickly given the saint moniker, especially during a time when "communism" and the Hilda obsession are on the rise. The thing is you can tell he's uncomfortable with the moniker because he knows he's only human who is trying to do his best and he can never meet the expectation society is placing on him. Anyway, he meets Hilda in the most dramatically catholic-gothic way, she fights back and she's incredibly beautiful and she's telling him what he knows to be true, but no one else is saying. His world is completely rocked.
Ugh, I can't wait to watch this episode.
2. What We Do In The Shadows
Tumblr media
This is the natural progression of finishing Wellington Paranormal. I loved that show so much so I thought that I would give this show a chance. Also, vampires!
It's fun and silly and it cements my reasons for loving sitcoms.
I'm 2 episodes away from finishing the first season.
3. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
Tumblr media
I've been slowly getting into watching cozy mystery movies and shows again. I think this would definitely be classified as a cozy mystery. While it's a British-made show, the show was filmed and narratively set in Botswana. It's funny and sweet. The main character is beautiful, smart and very sincere.
It's a shame it only got 7 episodes before it was cancelled, but at least there are novels. Also, it's one of the few shows that my cat will watch. lol
4. Delicious in Dungeon
Tumblr media
I like medieval stuff. I like the look of anime food. I like Slice-of-Life anime shows. That's pretty much it.
Shows I'm Still Watching:
Abbott Elementary
Tumblr media
I forgot there was a new season. Still wholesome. It's a little jarring that Pug from She-Hulk is a regular this season, but I like him. Everyone is still lovable and fun like always.
2. Mr. And Mrs. Smith
Tumblr media
I've been watching this at a glacial pace. I don't know what to tell you. I like it enough to keep watching it, but I don't have the urge to binge-watch it. So I'm savoring the eight episodes. I'm currently on the fourth.
3. Daredevil
Tumblr media
God, I love looking at this man. Like I said previously, I'm watching this show with a friend and we have a life, so we're watching this when we have time. We literally have 2 episodes left.
Shows I Finished too quickly this month
The Gilded Age
Tumblr media
I was not expecting this show to be so entertaining or that it would be so stacked with talented actresses. Audra McDonald, Christine Baransi, Cynthia Nixon?! WHAT?
Also, whether old money or new money, rich people are annoying and out-of-touch. But it's fun to see the infighting.
2. Bridgerton: Season 3
Tumblr media
I finished it. I need to watch it again so I can solidify my opinions, but I definitely think there weren't enough romantic scenes between Colin and Penelope before the truth came out.

In a small Louisiana Bayou town during mid-September 1965, Albert Gilly frantically prepares his family's fishing store for an impending hurricane. Amid the chaos, he notices Adonis, a drifter, lying motionless on the street. With the wind raging and debris swirling violently around them, Albert's mind is consumed with thoughts of his family and their dependence on him as the sole breadwinner. Knowing that they would be destitute without him, he makes the painful decision to prioritize his own safety over rescuing the stranger. As Albert stands in his shop's doorway, the weight of his guilt is almost suffocating, causing him to hesitate before locking himself inside. He shouts one last time, urging the young man to seek shelter in his late father's houseboat at the end of the pier. Adonis is startled awake by his words, his mind still hazy, as he struggles through the strong winds until arriving at the floating sanctuary. However, his relief is short-lived upon discovering the sinister secrets concealed within the old wooden walls.
About the Author
Brigitte, "Gitte," Tamar was born in a small rural Oregon town. Growing up, she was enthralled by scary tales featuring poetic tones and consistently gravitated towards writing darkened narratives. In the different storylines, Brigitte explores the harsh realities of social issues faced by today's generations. This includes the dark outcomes brought on by peer pressure, addiction, homelessness, mental illness, childhood trauma, and abuse. She feels it is essential to share narratives that refrain from sugarcoating the topics society tends to shy away from.

I first saw Slipknot at age 14.
No one knows how I managed it. I'm not sure I even remember. These days, you have to be 16 or 18 to get into Standing areas. I do know I had to buy tickets on the phone, back in the old days (2005, that is). A singular ticket, too - none of my friends, not even the classmate who had gone with me to see Linkin Park the year before, was that into Slipknot.
But I HAD to see them. This was the Subliminal Verses tour cycle, and Vol. 3 was my first and favourite Slipknot album, even to this day. It's the reliable old warm blanket for my soul whenever I need it. It's on right now, as I write this.
My memory isn't that good, but luckily I unearthed a livejournal (livejournal!) diary entry about the event I made the next day.
August 16, 2005. I went right after school. I went to a very conservative Anglican secondary school, too. I tried not to get caught in the bathroom, as I coloured my nails black with permanent marker (I know, don't laugh) and changed into my standard metalhead baby outfit - Slipknot band shirt, black cargo shorts, and my pride and joy: steel-toe boots I somehow managed to cajole my parents into letting me own.
I caught the bus to the open-air war memorial park where the gig was going to be. I got there at 4pm, 4 hours early. A couple other maggots were already hanging around. I found myself surrounded by tombstones, and I read them all. It was the middle of the Hungry Ghost Festival, too - a very fitting time for Slipknot to pay a visit to this godforsaken hellhole of a small town I lived in. (Especially given the paranormal circumstances surrounding the making of Vol. 3.)
While I wandered around the venue (no security or sound guys were around at all), I spotted two white vans pull up to the stage, in the middle of a clearing. It was them! I spotted Joey and missed him by a hair's breadth. I was quickly ushered behind the stone archway entrance by security then.
(Funnily enough, while walking around, I got mistaken for Joey more than once. I am the same height as him, had the same long black hair, same pale skin, and was wearing almost exactly what he had been. One person claimed from behind, I was a dead ringer, apart from when I turned around, and they realised I was Chinese.)
It was soundcheck time. A sound guy testing the mics would say random things, like "testing one two three two one.... fudge fudge, I like fudge...." The band even did Purity, so us earlybirds were given a rare treat, and we screamed along from the entrance, and drummed our fists on the sides of nearby porta-potties. I hope no one was in there at the time. Whenever we got a glance of any of them, we'd scream and cheer. Finally they left again, but were soon to return.
This was the first time I'd been a part of the metal community. I was barely allowed internet in those days. But here, random strangers were friendly, striking up conversations like they'd been friends for years. Two big guys, called Trevor and Ted, looked out for me the entire gig after, keeping other big dudes from crushing me too much (I'm 5'3, remember). Other people commented on me being so baby, because I was only 14, and said they would take care of me.
When we were finally let in, right after the usher cut the rope, I ran in, screamed "WOOOHOOO!" along with a few friends I'd made. I only briefly stopped to receive this RoadRunner Records compilation CD from a roadie, then resumed running like a madman screaming and dashing into the VIP cage.
I was right up against the barricade - the first time I would ever be at a gig. People from assorted magazines and press took photos of us, and I think I got my photo taken about 10 times at least.
(This is how I got in trouble with my parents the next day. My photo had ended up in a local paper - you can see examples of that here. They had no idea what I'd been to see the night before, and were horrified when they saw what Slipknot looked like.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We saw Sid filming us from the stage with a camcorder and screamed at him. We saw Jim and screamed at him too, and he flashed the victory sign back at us. I remember Metallica playing at the time, another one of my favourite bands.
The concert was a brutal religious experience I will never forget. People with their arms outstretched, crying and screaming out loud, moving like the devil possessed them.
The new friends around me made sure I was alright after every song! There were huge guys fainting behind us who had to get carried out, but I endured, a tiny 14 year old child. We got a family speech as per tradition, of course. "Are you guys out there all looking out for each other? We're all one big family, and we gotta look out for each other." What Corey said held true - strangers hugged, shook hands, talked, and made friends. I was heartened by how close-knit the maggot community was. It really did feel like a family, and it's felt like that ever since.
Of course, I did my first Jump The Fuck Up. It is possibly the most euphoria I've ever experienced all at one go. (Later, in 2020, I was extremely disappointed that I didn't get to do it again in London.)
They did the death masks for Vermilion, and I remember Chris helping Sid fix his mask and shirt when they'd changed back. Sid hung out near Clown's drums for most of the time too, and hugged him from behind and just latched on at one point. It was pretty adorable.
Fun fact: The version of Eyeless you hear on the 9.0 Live album is from Singapore, as is Eeyore. There are very few photos and videos from the crowd of this gig, because in 2005, very few people had camera phones. The crowd at the Slipknot gig in 2020 was a sea of arms with phones, filming the gig rather than experiencing it. Yes, I'm going to be that cranky old geezer who complains about the good old days.
Joey as usual, was fucking amazing and never failed. However, due to the fact that I was right up front, only his tiny head was visible behind his vast drum set, I couldn't see him the entire gig.
Tumblr media
Amazingly, the government told Slipknot they were not allowed to do obscene gestures, curse, vomit (possibly due to the decomposing crow pre-show ritual), simulate humping on objects, throw faeces, or jump off stage (looking at you, Sid). I don't think our totalitarian government knew who they were dealing with, because watch what happens next.
Near the end of the gig, Corey tells the crowd “your government has given us a laundry list of things we aren’t allowed to do, your government has told us we are not allowed to swear”. Crowd goes “BOOOOOOOOO” and Corey goes “BUT WE DON’T GIVE A FUCK!!” And they launch into Surfacing, the last song. Everyone riots. Best night of my life.
You can find the setlist from that gig here. It had everything I wanted and more.
This story later got immortalised when Kerrang asked maggots for gig stories, for an article which came out in 2020. I had forgotten entirely, until people began messaging me to tell me, and one friend sent me a scan of it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the way out, I managed to get a shirt. I remember calling my best friend at the time, and got everyone at the merch booth to go "IF YOU'RE 555 THEN I'M 666" for her. This shirt has since been lost to the landfill, because my Christian mother took it upon herself to dispose of it the first opportunity she got. Needless to say, our relationship is not very good.
After that, I even managed to get that Roadrunner compilation album they were giving out signed. The band was staying at the Carlton. Unfortunately, Joey wasn't there, neither was Clown, and Mick was swarmed by guitar nerds so, 6/9 it is. It is a great regret of mine that I'll never have anything signed by him, nor will I ever get to see him perform ever again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day, I went to school, my head swimming. Yes, I went to see Slipknot ON A SCHOOL NIGHT. I was a giant bruise, from my ribs and my chest, to my hips and knees, from being slammed into the barricade like a screen door in a hurricane. Most of all, my sore, headbanged-out neck could barely hold my head up. Classmates thought I had been in a fight. I was torn between battle-scarred exhaustion and hyperactive ranting about the most amazing gig of my short life (it still is, to this day). When teachers spoke to me, I wanted to reply, "Fuck trigonometry! I've just seen SLIPKNOT. Do you not understand that my world is different? Do you not understand that *I* am now different?"
My country was a small, conservative town that Slipknot had graced with their unholy presence. Corey Taylor once said that where he grew up in Iowa had a way of making a 16 year old boy feel like a 36 year old man (or something to that effect). I felt that in my weary bones as a teenager, being from a place just like that. Years later, Watain would run into worse trouble, and wouldn't even be allowed to perform. The Christian stranglehold is stronger than ever. It was a good thing that back then Slipknot had the element of surprise, striking serpent-fast and choking this society by the neck for a too-brief time, before they departed.
After that, my desire to play the drums only grew like a weed. Joey Jordison had, has, and will always inspire me as a drummer, and seeing the beast live (or what little I could spy behind the massive riser) had only spurred me on. I had always been a noisemaker, be it driving my parents mad with chopsticks on pots and pans, or driving my teachers mad with pencils on my desk. But of course, my parents wouldn't have any of it. I'd have to wait a good 14 more years before I'd be able to afford lessons and later, a kit of my own. Better late than never, right?
There will never be enough words to describe the impact Joey has had on my life. And it isn't just Slipknot, either. I could write another essay on his time with the Murderdolls and its influence on my own gender-non-conforming ways. Suffice to say, my wardrobe doesn't look too dissimilar to his during the early Dead in Hollywood days.
I told my boss I could not come into work today. I was grieving. I said that my music teacher died, as I didn't think she'd understand the magnitude of my loss. In a way, it's true. And I am not the only one Joey has nudged on the path to being a musician, that much is certain. To the rest of us, I wish strength and love for you in this difficult time. The best way to honour Joey, who truly loved music, both the creation and appreciation of it, is to pass that gift on. Teach it to someone. He is the reason I picked up the sticks in the first place, and one day, they'll be handed on, the heavy metal baton for the next generation.
And finally: remember that the ones we have lost are never truly gone.

Whats life like UK?
that’s a very broad question, and I have no idea how to do it justice lmao. I mean, for the most part it’s alright? for me, anyway, and that’s something to keep in mind because I am one person in a whole country. it’s alright. there’s a lot about the country that I’m not happy about, and there is so much to criticise, but like. there’s things I enjoy, too.
there’s a lot going on the UK. it’s a very diverse place, and there’s lots of influence from other cultures and worldviews. the downside to this, of course, is that there’s a not insignificant problem with racism and far-right political groups, but unfortunately that’s hardly unique anymore. most people I’ve met have been very tolerant, and so long as you avoid any middle-aged white people in the Home Counties or rural Lincolnshire, or anyone with a beer belly wearing a Union Jack, you should be alright. politically we’re a mess right now, but we also have some good stuff, like free health care which is something I never take for granted.
the weather sucks. like, that’s a given. it rains a lot, and when it’s not raining it’s threatening to rain. we have a heatwave every year (most people just call it “summer”) and our houses suck in them because they’re built to keep in heat, so basically you just suffer and die for the entire time and everyone is complaining about the weather even more than usual. we do occasionally get some pretty cool wild weather though: we actually get hurricane force storms here, and every so often an impressive snowstorm will show up.
socially we’re a fun bunch. I do like the fact that people in this country are always down for some fun (banter, if you will). we like to get together, we like to drink perhaps a little more than we should, and we’re very good at poking fun at ourselves. the sense of humour in the UK is an acquired taste, and I think that if you’re not used to it it can be kind of a lot, but we really do love snatching ourselves and we really love snatching our politicians. we have a very dark sense of humour, and perhaps a little risqué at times, but I’ve always appreciated it. it’s very useful for when things are tough.
everywhere has a lot of history. as a historian, that’s obviously something I like. we’re an old country, and the evidence is everywhere. buildings that are centuries old are common in pretty much every major city, town, and even village. castles and manors are everywhere. ruins and ancient sites are everywhere. pretty much every major town or city has its own museum because it’s historically significant. you can dig in your garden and find 1,000-year-old coins. it’s pretty cool.
we’re a very haunted country, too. ghost stories are everywhere, and pretty much any place you can point to on a map has at least a couple of ghost stories about it. the UK is said to be one of the most haunted countries in the world, and Scotland is said to be the most haunted country in the world, so if you like your paranormal encounters it’s definitely worth coming for a visit. it’s probably got something to do with all that history.
if I could criticise the place with something specific, it would be that we’re not very good at moving out of the past. this isn’t as bad with the younger generations (especially as immigration has helped in terms of the younger generations having more worldviews to interact with) but it’s certainly bad with the older generations, and of course it’s very much seen in policies and government. people in the UK like to find a way that works and stick to it, and we can be very slow to change. even with overwhelming evidence, our politicians and society leaders are reluctant to admit there’s an issue and take action to fix it; there’s still a very “stiff upper lip” attitude that seems to think that enduring a problem is better than preventing it, or acknowledging it and fixing it. I hope this is something that will die out with the older generations.
there’s also like, a serious class divide. it’s not like it used to be back in the old days, but it’s sure as fuck still not great. there is an upper class here that’s just... kind of backwards, if I’m honest, and there’s a huge divide between the country’s rich and the country’s poor. I mean, we have people living in literal squalor and poverty, especially in the north. you can pretty much draw a line: the south (London and the surrounding counties) are rich, and the further north you get, the poorer it is. the government also doesn’t really seem to give a shit, surprise surprise. in London it’s especially clear. you can have dilapidated council houses (social housing) backing on to literal mansions; you can have huge gated houses with Lamborghinis in the driveway and there’s a homeless person sleeping on cardboard outside. it’s ridiculous, and I don’t know how it isn’t being addressed with more seriousness.
but really, I don’t think there’s any problem unique to the UK. we have our own variables contributing to why they’re there, but overall most countries deal with this bullshit. there are certainly worse places to live, but the things I love about the country just makes me even more saddened to see the things that I hate about it. I like living here, overall, but I’m frustrated because we could be so much better as a society. but I’m sure I’m not alone in that, and I’m sure that pretty much anyone could say that about their own countries.

Defy
Those who defy any categorization, those who defy any limitizations and those who defy any critisization are the ones who withstand the cyclones ,hurricanes and tornadoes. The big tree falls down but grass survives in category -3 hurricane. The thing is that big falls down with the thud and the repurcutions of the fall is heard far and wide but small does not fall down like the thud of big ones. The bigger the tree, the deeper the roots. The higher you are ,the farther you fall. Those who goes up must come down. Those who are born must die. What enters must exist. What rises must sets down and what sets down must rise. This is the rule. One cannot defy the gravity without flying machine. One cannot defy the natural rules but artificial rules can be defied. One can criticize indefinitely who defy norms.Criticism is your nature, talking on the back is your your nature. You criticize good and you criticize bad.You don't praise somebody's good from inside .You say I am the best and the rest is second. Some say I am second to none. You are jealous of someone achievements.Jealousness is your nature. One can't defy the nature. You can't defy the senses. We have limits and there are limitations of human understandings and limitations of human comprehensions. It's easy for us to comprehend the things which we see but we cannot comprehend the things which we can't see.We can't defy the vision, we can't defy the hearing, we can't defy other senses. One cannot defy the existence and it's laws. The hidden laws beneath the understanding can be known to some extent but not all.Laws of existence can be known to the surface but not to the core.
Defying is going beyond comprehensibilty, understandability and limitability. That is not possible as far as limitations of human senses and intellectuallity is concerned. It's difficult to resist the nature of things. It's going against the wind, it is flowing against the flow. It's a resistance against all evens and all odds. Actually, oddness is not the nature because nature is not odd. However, the opposite is always the possibility. The activities of other plane and other dimension looks abnormal and strange in this plane. The paranormal, the parapsychology and the supernatural cannot be defied.Everyone is under the obedience of these worlds. There are always exceptions in artificial sphere but not in natural sphere. You can defy the society because in society there are artificial rules but you cannot defy the individuality. One is possible and other is impossible. There are many possibilities and there are many impossibilities.Natural entities are non defiable, non withstandable and non resistable. The energy or force which moves electron cannot defy the electron and the electron cannot defy the proton and neutron.Earth cannot defy the Sun and the moon cannot defy the earth. Energy cannot be defied. It can only be transformed from one to other forms. Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed. Quarks, Higgs and Bosons are non defiable entities. One should not go for defying the norms but rather should be going with the norms. It's easy in surrendering oneself under the feet of nature but it is difficult in resisting the existence.Deviating is not defying, totally opposing is defying. How can you oppose the laws ? That is not possible. It is the invitation of all the problems by simply opposing and resisting.Life and death cannot be defied and so is love cannot be defied also.Denying and defying is against the nature of whatever exist.

April 2019 Book Releases
Tumblr media
Being one of those readers who enjoys a large variety of genres, I sometimes find it easy to become overwhelmed with new releases. What should I read next? The paranormal romance about the werebeast? Or the feminist, not-so-fictional story about rape culture? What about the latest installment in an ongoing fantasy series that I’ve been desperately waiting for?
If you’re anything like me, you might find the sheer volume of options daunting, and worry about missing out on awesome, lesser publicized books that might get buried under the hype surrounding the big name bestsellers.
Not to fear, fellow reader! To help us all out, I’ve created this monthly post highlighting the standout releases in several genres, with a special emphasis on representation, diversity, and own voices.

Hesina’s court is packed full of dissemblers and deceivers eager to use the king’s death for political gain, each as plausibly guilty as the next. Her advisers would like her to blame the neighboring kingdom of Kendi’a, whose ruler has been mustering for war. Determined to find her father’s actual killer, Hesina does something desperate: she enlists the aid of a soothsayer—a treasonous act, punishable by death, since magic was outlawed centuries ago.

Normal People by Sally Rooney Release Date: April 16th Genre: Literary Fiction
A wondrous and wise coming-of-age love story from the celebrated author of Conversations with Friends
At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school football team, while she is lonely, proud and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers—one they are determined to conceal.
A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years at university, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. And as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other. Sally Rooney brings her brilliant psychological acuity and perfectly spare prose to a story that explores the subtleties of class, the electricity of first love, and the complex entanglements of family and friendship.

The Austen Playbook by Lucy Parker Release Date: April 22nd Genre: Contemporary, Romance
Freddy Carlton knows she should be focusing on her lines for The Austen Playbook, a live-action TV event where viewers choose the outcome of each scene, but her concentration’s been blown. The palatial estate housing the endeavor is now run by the rude (brilliant) critic who’s consistently slammed her performances of late. James “Griff” Ford-Griffin has a penchant for sarcasm, a majestic nose and all the sensitivity of a sledgehammer.
She can’t take her eyes off him.
Griff can hardly focus with a contagious joy fairy flitting about near him, especially when Freddy looks at him like that. His only concern right now should be on shutting down his younger brother’s well-intentioned (disastrous) schemes—or at the very least on the production (not this one) that might save his family home from the banks.
Instead all he can think of is soft skin and vibrant curls.
As he’s reluctantly dragged into her quest to rediscover her passion for the stage and Freddy is drawn into his research on a legendary theater star, the adage about appearances being deceiving proves abundantly true. It’s the unlikely start of something enormous…but a single revelation about the past could derail it all.

How (Not) to Ask a Boy to Prom by S.J. Goslee Release Date: April 23rd Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance, LGBTQ+

And when his big sister stages an elaborate “prom-posal” so Nolan can ask out his not-so-secret crush, Nolan freezes. He’s saved from further embarrassment by bad boy Bern, who, for his own reasons, offers to fake-date Nolan.
Nolan thinks it’s the perfect way to get Daphne off his back and spend the rest of the year drawing narwhals, tending to plants, and avoiding whatever died under his bed a few weeks ago. What he doesn’t think about is Bern’s ex-girlfriend, who seriously wants to kill him.

If I’m Being Honest by Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka Release Date: April 23rd Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Retellings
High school senior Cameron Bright’s reputation can be summed up in one word: bitch. So when she puts her foot in her mouth in front of her crush, Andrew, she fears she may have lost him for good.
In an attempt to win him over, Cameron resolves to “tame” herself, much like Katherine in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. First, she’ll have to make amends with those she’s wronged, which leads her to Brendan, the guy she labelled with an unfortunate nickname back in the sixth grade. At first, Brendan isn’t all that receptive to Cameron’s ploy. But slowly, he warms up to her when they connect over the computer game he’s developing. Now if only Andrew would notice…
But the closer Cameron gets to Brendan, the more she sees he appreciates her personality—honesty and all—and wonders if she’s compromising who she is for the guy she doesn’t even want.

And now that I’ve written up the panels I attended*, I will attempt to write a little bit about the ones I was actually on. I’m not multi-taskented enough to take vigorous notes while actually panelling, but I’ll try and get some basics down at least. Please feel free to comment with additions and corrections!
(* - I did not write up the Leverage panel because 1) I was super exhausted, and 2) it was mostly a FEELS/SQUEE panel anyway, and 3) I figured (rightly) that it would be heavily live-tweeted anyway, so instead of my trusty notebook and pen, I brought my pillow and I got there early and took up two chairs - I apologize as I know it ended up being standing room only but I decided this was an access issue as if I could not put my feet up my gimpy ass was going to have to go back to bed - and I kinda hugged the wall while sobbing freely, cheering loudly, and generally having an exceptional time. Check the #LeverageFandom on twitter for actual accounts, including some of the show creators tweeting back at the fans awwwww)
Anyway, the first panel that I was on was Science Fiction on TV (#SFonTV) with moderator Carrie Pruett and fellow panelists Sigrid Ellis and Candra K. Gill.
I was super excited to be on this panel because TV is my JAM and also all of those panelists are excellent people that I’ve had the privilege of panneling with in the past.
It was primarily a squee panel and I recall raving about 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, Lucifer, Orphan Black, Luke Cage, Colony, The Expanse, and Timeless among other shows.
Candra and I bonded over being some of the few who prefer Dark Matter over Killjoys (I like them both but DM is one of my absolute faves and I feel like KJ gets a ton more attention).
We discussed some SFF comedies such as The Good Place, The Last Man on Earth, Powerless, and my personal rec: People of Earth (seriously watch this show).
We chatted about the proliferation of superhero shows (”when is Marvel going to get in the game?” LOL), and also time travel shows - some that succeeded and some that failed.
OUaT was brought up and many of us agreed that it’s one of those shows we just can’t quit even though we want to.
And then we did talk some about how much more representation we want out of our TV - specifically out of SFF TV because if they can have magic and super powers and time travel and futuristic sets and space travel - surely they could also have more people of color, more fat people, more disabled people, more queer people, more people of all shapes and sizes and colors. Why is this so hard!?
A few recs that others gave that I wrote down include: The Celluloid Closet documentary (that’s been rec’d to me before, I should really get on that), following Vincent D’Onofrio on twitter, and the show 3%.
At the end, I did my usual “I love TV - come talk to me about it” spiel, and my MOM from the audience said some embarrassing thing about how I also write great reviews (I don’t even really DO that anymore mom!) so I waved my hand and said “that’s my mom everyone - don’t listen to her!” - and then gave her a big hug after because that’s just such a my-mom thing of her to do and it’s so adorable how she always wants to come to WisCon to “see me talk”.
The next panel I was on was Where Do We Dystopia From Here? (#WhitherDystopia on the tweeters), which had a pretty good turn-out for a 10:30 pm panel. Our mod got sick so we had a sub-mod who had to kinda jump in to the subject matter last minute. I had some issues with my fellow panelist which isn’t worth getting into on a public post but otherwise I think the panel was good and the audience contributed a lot, which was cool, especially since we were across the hall from the Vid Party!
The hashtag for this one got some good rep, so check that out for a complete idea of how the panel went. I know I started off giving some history of the terms dystopia and utopia because I am a nerd who looks these things up ahead of time.
I also brought up “whose dystopia? dystopia for who?” a lot as a theme because so many dystopias focus on specific privileged groups who are suddenly having to face conditions that actual real populations of people are already dealing with, which can be frustrating. Also a main theme of dystopias is that some small group of powerful people are in control and wielding that authority in horrific ways - so for that small group of people - it’s not a dystopia. Basically, I just really want to encourage people to be constantly asking themselves whose dystopia is this, for whom is this a dystopia - both in their fiction and in real life.
We talked some about the differences and similarities between post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction. One thing I’d noted when looking at examples myself was that post-apoc. fiction tends to be in more rural settings with themes about survival, and dystopian fiction tends to be set in more urban settings with the main theme being resistance. Of course, the two can be put together - especially when a dystopia arises after some cataclysmic event. But another form of dystopia is the kind I related to the frog-in-the-pot analogy of it happening slowly and gradually around people so that before they realize they’re in a dystopia it’s already too late.
Themes of dystopian fiction we discussed included: those in power using propaganda to make citizens believe they’re in an utopia; that the totalitarian control of a dystopia can come from any direction - both socialist and capitalist dystopias, dystopias where religion is suppressed or used to oppress, governments taken over or corporations have or technological advances have, etc.; constant surveillance being either a reality or a belief held to keep people under control, dehumanization of the groups being controlled.
When defining dystopia, especially in relation to similar genres, I said it’s kind of like the old saying about porn in that “I know it when I see it.” There’s a specific feel to dystopias - they don’t always fit exactly, but we recognize these common themes and kind of settle in to it.
I talked some about real life examples including the often-used Nazi Germany one, but also stuff from our own history in the U.S. - slavery, conditions after Hurricane Katrina, and frankly what’s happening right now in Flint, MI with the water crisis.
We talked about what is useful about dystopian fiction - how it reflects a society’s deepest fears and hopes for itself, can draw attention to current real issues, and can provide us with hope and even ideas as to how to resist dystopian aspects of our current situations - or where we see things going in the future.
As far as limitations and problems with the genre, I know I talked some about how most dystopian stories only focus on one or two issues and then take them to a sort of ridiculous extreme which can undermine the multiplicity of issues actually facing us and make us take them less seriously. Also, a common trope of YA dystopias specifically is that one special person who alone has the power to topple the powerful regime and how that trope can lessen the idea that we can all fight back and overcome these things.
We talked some about the increase in sales of 1984 and BNW after Trump’s election and what that means. I specifically found it interesting that it was these classics written by white guys and not more recent dystopias that may be more applicable or female authors, authors of color, etc.
I remember being asked about dystopias from more marginalized voices and wondering aloud about examples of poc authors writing dystopias - I could think of Octavia Butler’s Parable series and posited that N. K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth series might fit (got some questioning looks there so IDK if I sold that or not), and someone in the audience reminded me of Alaya Dawn Johnson’s The Summer Prince (which I need to read!), but I don’t think we came up with anything else.
There was an audience comment about having trouble relating to urban dystopias where they just don’t have skills that could keep them alive because they feel like those would be fairly easy things to learn how to do. I talked about a common theme in dystopias being that either nature no longer exists because we’ve destroyed it or it’s being forbidden in some way - such as in The Hunger Games.
Some of the sources I referenced included: Brave New World, Nineteen Eighty Four, Woman on the Edge of Time, The Handmaid’s Tale, Parable of the Sower, The Hunger Games series, 12 Monkeys, Mad Max, The Matrix, The Purge movies, Continuum, Colony.
Recs from others that I managed to jot down: Paolo Bacigalupi’s work, Lois Lowry’s The Giver, The Roar and The Whisper by Emma Clayton, Jennifer Government by Max Barry, the Silo series by Hugh Howey, Red Rising by Pierce Brown, The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu, Underground Airlines by Ben Winters, and the Snowpiercer movie.
(I was pleased after attending the other Dystopia panel the next day that we hadn’t had too much overlap. Ours was focused primarily on fiction with a little bit about real life where the other one focused more on real life stuff as it pertains to fiction.)
The third and final panel I was on was The Age of the Scifi Cop Show (#ScifiCops) with moderator Candra K. Gill and my fellow panelist Samuel Steinbrock-Pratt.
This one’s got a lot in the hashtag too, so check it out! Candra and Samuel had a lot of cool stuff to say, as did our lively audience. Samuel especially had a great perspective because he’s a criminal defense attorney.
We discussed issues of surveillance and privacy as it relates both to tech-heavy sci-fi shows and more paranormal shows where, for instance, the zombie can eat a murder victim’s brain and gain their memories like in iZombie.
We talked a lot about superhero/vigilante shows and how they represent who is and isn’t allowed to break the laws and why. Samuel had some strong feelings about Daredevil, especially, as a defense attorney who 1) only wants to represent the innocent and 2) goes out and breaks laws all the time himself. I added that Luke Cage did some interesting things in regards to intersections with vigilantism and law enforcement, as well as race, class, and gender.
Person of Interest was another show we talked about a lot, both positive and negative.
One topic was why there are so many scifi cop shows, and just cop shows anyway. Part of the reason is that it’s a nice formula for a show to follow in a serial format. Another is the ability for lots of excitement and drama involved. Also examined was the idea of who profits from having a common narrative where the cops are our protags?
We talked some about how these shows, in a genre that’s supposed to be about stretching the imagination, still don’t address so many systemtic issues in the police such as racism and abelism. Some shows actively reinforce these things by having us rooting for cops who are corrupt themselves, where other shows just gloss over these problems by having active surveillance and yet not dealing with things such as stop and frisk laws.
Samuel and Candra had some great things to say about cop shows set in the future and how they tend to criminalize the same things we do now, but that what we decide are crimes changes over time. For example - drug crimes are a thing that a futuristic cop/legal show could show having been abolished. Or what about a future where there are no cops? What about reparative justice?
An audience member asked about an epidemiological approach to crime. They used the example of lead poisoning leading to violence, which another audience member refuted, but the issue of taking an approach of what health issues might be causing crime remained of interest. The Reavers from Firefly were brought up.
I talked about a Canadian show called Cracked, starring David Sutcliffe, which is not a Sci-fi show, but does deal with cops gaining a greater understanding of how mental health issues intersect with crime - from either the perpetrator or victim side of things. The show paired cops with psychiatrists or psych nurses in a unit specially created to deal with crime relating to mental illness.
We talked some about shows coming more from the outlaw angle such as Mr. Robot and Leverage.
Other shows I brought up included Stitchers, Limitless, Lucifer, Lost Girl, Minority Report, Continuum, and IDK a bunch more.
Some stuff that got rec’d that I wrote down to check out included: Ultraviolet (the TV show not the movie), and the book A Door Into Ocean for it’s portrayal of banishment and reconciliatory justice.
Phew! And so. Those were my panels. Or at least, what I can recall of them a good week later.
I always appreciate getting feedback as a panelist - so feel free to chat with me, privately or publicly, about how you think the panel went if you were at any of these!

New York Today: New York Today: Preparing for the Next Sandy

Good morning on this soggy Monday.
Five years ago today, New York City’s deadliest hurricane in modern history barreled through our neighborhoods, flooding houses, lifting cars and shutting down power in some areas.
By the time Hurricane Sandy had passed, it had killed 43 people in New York City (more than half of whom were in Staten Island) and caused $19 billion in damage here.
And it could happen again sooner than you might think.
According to a new study, storms that bring Sandy-like flooding to New York City could happen every five years by 2030.
We asked readers who were directly affected by storm how they would prepare differently for the next Sandy-like hurricane. Here are a few of the responses:
“Evacuate before the storm, bringing both of our cars. Assume the flooding will be worse. Don’t use the floor as a filing system in my home office.”

Gina and Stu Dubner, 54 and 60, Oceanside, N.Y.
“I would move my car to higher ground and remove anything from the floor of the storage room and garage. Since we were without power for almost a week, I would ensure I have plenty of candles and foods that don’t require heating. Big mistake last time!”

“Get your house raised! NY Rising offers grant money, which covers part of the cost. It’s a very professional and well-run organization. We did it in 2015 and the peace of mind is deafening.”
— Anne Fogarty, 69, Remsenburg, N.Y.
“I have already prepared for the next Sandy. I have enough dry goods food to last for two weeks and water to last for a week. I choose to live on the top floor of my walk-up apartment building to avoid flooding. In addition, I have camping gear such as lanterns, sleeping bags and backpacks in case I need to leave on foot and if it gets really cold again after the storm.”
— Brett Lipschultz, 29, Hoboken, N.J.
“ I would have carefully reviewed my homeowners and flood insurance policies and prepare for what it would take to get our claim resolved. I would have removed more items from our home and started to look at possible places to live, if necessary. Most importantly, I would have done everything I could to try and protect my children’s emotional health.”
— Colleen Cronin Mulieri, 49, Babylon, N.Y.
“I was out of power for two weeks. Looking back, I would have bought more beer and not put it in the fridge, because it smelled like dead cat.”
— John Kelly, 55, Jersey City, N.J.
Here’s what else is happening:
Weather
= c_phrase
= temp °= temp_unit = c_high ° = c_low °
Decorative ghouls and gourds should get a good wash today. We are expecting rain and very gusty winds this morning.
Hair forecast: Bewitched Bette.
But the skies should be bone dry by this afternoon when the high could be near 60.
Halloween looks charming: It should be mostly sunny during the day, and as you head out to trick-or-treat the temperature should hover in the mid-50s.
