🎄💾🗓️ Day 11: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - The SEL 840A🎄💾🗓️
Systems Engineering Laboratories (SEL) introduced the SEL 840A in 1965. This is a deep cut folks, buckle in. It was designed as a high-performance, 24-bit general-purpose digital computer, particularly well-suited for scientific and industrial real-time applications.
Notable for using silicon monolithic integrated circuits and a modular architecture. Supported advanced computation with features like concurrent floating-point arithmetic via an optional Extended Arithmetic Unit (EAU), which allowed independent arithmetic processing in single or double precision. With a core memory cycle time of 1.75 microseconds and a capacity of up to 32,768 directly addressable words, the SEL 840A had impressive computational speed and versatility for its time.
Its instruction set covered arithmetic operations, branching, and program control. The computer had fairly robust I/O capabilities, supporting up to 128 input/output units and optional block transfer control for high-speed data movement. SEL 840A had real-time applications, such as data acquisition, industrial automation, and control systems, with features like multi-level priority interrupts and a real-time clock with millisecond resolution.
Software support included a FORTRAN IV compiler, mnemonic assembler, and a library of scientific subroutines, making it accessible for scientific and engineering use. The operator’s console provided immediate access to registers, control functions, and user interaction! Designed to be maintained, its modular design had serviceability you do often not see today, with swing-out circuit pages and accessible test points.
And here's a personal… personal computer history from Adafruit team member, Dan…
== The first computer I used was an SEL-840A, PDF:
I learned Fortran on it in eight grade, in 1970. It was at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where my parents worked, and was used to take data from cyclotron experiments and perform calculations. I later patched the Fortran compiler on it to take single-quoted strings, like 'HELLO', in Fortran FORMAT statements, instead of having to use Hollerith counts, like 5HHELLO.
In 1971-1972, in high school, I used a PDP-10 (model KA10) timesharing system, run by BOCES LIRICS on Long Island, NY, while we were there for one year on an exchange.
This is the front panel of the actual computer I used. I worked at the computer center in the summer. I know the fellow in the picture: he was an older high school student at the time.
The first "personal" computers I used were Xerox Alto, Xerox Dorado, Xerox Dandelion (Xerox Star 8010), Apple Lisa, and Apple Mac, and an original IBM PC. Later I used DEC VAXstations.
Dan kinda wins the first computer contest if there was one… Have first computer memories? Post’em up in the comments, or post yours on socialz’ and tag them #firstcomputer #retrocomputing – See you back here tomorrow!

Computing Pioneers for Shashi Hotel
Honoring the Legacy of Computing Innovators
In this project, in collaboration with Local Language, the Oakland based creative studio, I was honored to create four mosaic portraits of renowned computer pioneers: Tommy Flowers, Graham Bell, Michael Faraday, and Charles Babbage. These artworks were commissioned to embellish the rooms of the prestigious Shashi Shoreline Hotel, located in the heart of Silicon Valley. As an artist with a deep fascination for the intersection of art and technology, I am humbled to have had the opportunity to create portraits that pay tribute to these distinguished individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of the computing industry. The Shashi Shoreline Hotel, located in one of the most technologically advanced regions globally, provided a perfect platform for exhibiting these artworks. As guests explored the hotel's rooms, they encountered pieces highlighting the legacy of these pioneers and their impact on computing technology More about the project: https://www.behance.net/gallery/169255039/Computing-Pioneers-for-Shashi-Hotel

Memory Line (2022)
Dir. Matt Parker
DOP Bella Riza
Memory Line is a short documentary film that reflects on the early days of computing and listens to computing veterans who remember their experiences of the memory machine, EDSAC. The work comprises interviews with three women who are veterans of EDSAC as they remember their time working with the machine and also includes interviews with a group of volunteers who are currently building a replica of EDSAC at The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park. They discuss the important role of women in early computing, and what makes them tick as pioneering computer programmers. On 6 May 1949 a team of engineers led by Sir Maurice Wilkes in the University of Cambridge Mathematical Laboratory ran the first programme on a new digital computer called the Electronic delay storage automatic calculator (EDSAC).EDSAC is one of the first digital computers ever built with a programmable memory that allowed it to store data. Using tubes of mercury, the computer stored bits of data by sending ultrasonic pulses through the tubes and creating a memory feedback loop. The computer’s memories were literally soundwaves.A team of retired computer engineers are currently building a replica of EDSAC (which was decommissioned 60 years ago in 1958) at The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park. The project has seen spare rooms, garden sheds, attics and kitchen tables converted into project and prototype laboratories across the region as the team build a machine which is an entire room in size, in their homes.

———— In 1981 Phillips released the P2000. It would become an icon, because many children in The Netherlands got to work with it, because schools chose this computer thanks to its robustness. The P2000 came with a een Z80 microprocessor with a speed of 2,5 MHz. It had 4 KiB ROM, 16 KiB RAMand 2 KiB videoRAM. #philips #philipscomputer #eindhoven #p2000 #p2000t #personalcomputer #historyofcomputers #pc #80s #1980s #homecomputer #cassetebandjes #cassetetape #525inchfloppy #floppy #2000t #computer #computers #computerhistory #historyfound https://www.instagram.com/p/CUxnwZIsozK/?utm_medium=tumblr

26th December 1791, birth of English polymath, mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer Charles Babbage. Babbage originated the concept of a digital programmable computer, and is considered to be the "father of the computer. Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical general purpose computer called ‘The Analytical Engine’ in 1837. Although executing the ideas and plans for the analytical engine, and other pioneering computing machines; Babbage’s computers were never realized in his lifetime. It would not be until the late 1930’s and early 1940’s that his machine’s would become a reality. Leading to the modern computer today. Charles Babbage and his Analytical Engine appear in the historical Industrial sublime Tarot 1760 - 1848. A tarot deck inspired by the 18th and 19th century, with a healthy dose of steampunk added for flavour. Available in 5x7 prints in color or naked ink, with historical description. Silicon Valley, avagy Google napok
A választási lehetőségek között szerepelt a Mountain View-i iroda, azaz a Google főhadiszállás meglatogatása is.

Ever Wonder Why Computer Errors are Called Bugs? 🤔🐛 One of the first computer errors was actually caused by a real bug - a moth that got trapped in a relay and caused a malfunction. From then on, computer errors have been commonly referred to as "bugs." 🖥️🐞 #ComputerError #Bug #Moth #Malfunction #RealBug #ComputerHistory #FunFact #Trivia #GeekOut #Technology #Innovation #Software #Hardware #Coding #Programming #Error #Glitch #Debugging #ComputerScience #STEM #HistoryOfComputers #ViralStory #Trending #ShareThisStory #StayInformed" https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp2c35QP75S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
