🎄💾🗓️ Day 11: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - The SEL 840A🎄💾🗓️

Systems Engineering Laboratories (SEL) introduced the SEL 840A in 1965. This is a deep cut folks, buckle in. It was designed as a high-performance, 24-bit general-purpose digital computer, particularly well-suited for scientific and industrial real-time applications.

Notable for using silicon monolithic integrated circuits and a modular architecture. Supported advanced computation with features like concurrent floating-point arithmetic via an optional Extended Arithmetic Unit (EAU), which allowed independent arithmetic processing in single or double precision. With a core memory cycle time of 1.75 microseconds and a capacity of up to 32,768 directly addressable words, the SEL 840A had impressive computational speed and versatility for its time.

Its instruction set covered arithmetic operations, branching, and program control. The computer had fairly robust I/O capabilities, supporting up to 128 input/output units and optional block transfer control for high-speed data movement. SEL 840A had real-time applications, such as data acquisition, industrial automation, and control systems, with features like multi-level priority interrupts and a real-time clock with millisecond resolution.

Software support included a FORTRAN IV compiler, mnemonic assembler, and a library of scientific subroutines, making it accessible for scientific and engineering use. The operator’s console provided immediate access to registers, control functions, and user interaction! Designed to be maintained, its modular design had serviceability you do often not see today, with swing-out circuit pages and accessible test points.

I learned Fortran on it in eight grade, in 1970. It was at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where my parents worked, and was used to take data from cyclotron experiments and perform calculations. I later patched the Fortran compiler on it to take single-quoted strings, like 'HELLO', in Fortran FORMAT statements, instead of having to use Hollerith counts, like 5HHELLO.

In 1971-1972, in high school, I used a PDP-10 (model KA10) timesharing system, run by BOCES LIRICS on Long Island, NY, while we were there for one year on an exchange.

This is the front panel of the actual computer I used. I worked at the computer center in the summer. I know the fellow in the picture: he was an older high school student at the time.

The first "personal" computers I used were Xerox Alto, Xerox Dorado, Xerox Dandelion (Xerox Star 8010), Apple Lisa, and Apple Mac, and an original IBM PC. Later I used DEC VAXstations.

For context, what better way than to start from the beginning?

Growing up, stability was just a word in the dictionary for me. Recently, I was thinking back to my earliest memories. Positive moments barely existed.

Some of my first recalled memories include a football to the face at 4, my grandfather's death at 5, and an Ohio winter that's barely hanging on.

I don't remember much, but I do know that my father was involved seldomly and my mother is an addict. I suppose it's your typical divorced family..

My parents divorced when I was 5, I don't remember them together. After the divorce, my mother moved my sister and I back to the state she called home. This meant my father is now hundreds of miles away. We will start with him.

It's crazy, because my earliest memory of him is at 10 or 11 years old. My birthday is coming up and I had only asked him for one thing. An Ipod. Surprised I had actually gotten it, I excitedly called and thanked him. He had said that he went ahead and added the first song onto it, our song. Waterfalls by TLC. What's even crazier, I had no recollection or memory attached to this song. So as I listen to TLC, I try to envision what it was that made Waterfalls our song.

Since then, we've been in contact here and there throughout the 25 years we've been apart. I've even seen him in person a few times when he is passing through when traveling. The last I recall him coming to visit just for me was my high school graduation. The last time I've seen him in person was when I traveled through for a cruise and he happened to be able to meet us. What's funny is that I have memories back when my parents were together, he was just never in any. I remember my grandparents and certain toys I had to play with there to even a fucking football that hit me dead in the eye.

All in all, our relationship is more so, acquainted. I never received the father love the internet portrays exist. I never had the special father-daughter moments that were supposed to teach me the way a lady should be treated. Talking to him as an adult, he feels like a stranger. To put some perspective into it, I had a child recently. Since finding out I was pregnant, I've maybe spoken to him a total of five times. I have a nine month old. I was also pregnant for nine months. I don't even want to do the math on that.

Seeing this all in writing has made me realize how absent he actually is. I mean.. the last time I talked to him he was still under the impression I was doing a profession I retired from about a year prior. Here I was thinking my mother was worse. Who knows... maybe after writing it all out, she may still be.

My intention was to include both my parents onto this post, but it seems they both deserve their own posts.

The worst thing about this, is that this literally happened to me two days ago while finishing up this drawing. Should I have known that my colleagues would give me 0% champagne at 10 in the morning? Maybe; did I think they are wild partyanimals and drink this early because it's an anniversary and I just join in with them despite having a very low alcohol tollerance and getting placebo'd into being tipsy because I can't tell the difference between 0% and actual champagne? Definetely.

I was embarassed and needless to say these two illustrations will be forever tied to this corememory.

in my head? LISTEN when i was like 6 i was invited to a neighbor kids bday party. she had this chalkboard in her room and on it someone had written [her name]❤️[a boy she was friends with] and everyone began an investigation to compare handwritings to find out who did it and they thought my A looked a bit similar and they were all blaming me until i started crying and my dad had to come and take me home😔 and in hindsight ive realized the real culprit was in the room and just watched me cry and thats pretty fucked up and im still mad about it #childhoodtrauma #corememory
