Baby, It’s Cold Outside...

Doesn’t really pay attention to lyrics: It’s a flirty and fun wintertime song, just like “Born in the USA” is a patriotic song!

Pays attention to the lyrics: It’s a song about date rape.  He pressures her to stay when she knows she should go, spikes her drink, and eventually gets his way with her.

Pays attention to the lyrics, the society in which the song was written, and how the original version was performed: They’re mocking the “Good Girls Don’t” tropes, she’s a willing participant in the upcoming bedroom (or couch) activities, and they’re laughing as they play through how it’s supposed to go.  Still a somewhat dark song, because single people of a certain social class are not Allowed to just have premarital sex.  They’re aware that it will be considered rape by a lot of people if anyone finds out, and if she gets pregnant she might have to claim rape to preserve her reputation or her life options (abortion wasn’t legal, but if it was due to rape and your family was well-off, ways around that could be found...while if it was consensual, she might get disowned and be in deep trouble if he won’t marry her).  It’s flirty but with a definite edge of danger.

Places to find/buy Morning Christmas - 2024 random streaming/download only comps edition.

- the "load of weird/unofficial looking mostly elf or gingerbread themed digital only Christmas compilations" featuring it mentioned last year have vanished but it's still on six short compilations with overlapping artists, all ℗© Trass Media Inc - one's even titled after it. (all UK amazon music links)

In The Valley Of Santa Claus ("I Saw Mommy Kissing Sant Clause" smh - doesn't even tell you who's singing it, manages to spell Claus right on the title track though, turns out to be some kid who can't really sing but they do sound appropriately depressed for once.)

Christmas Makes the Town (amazon's fucked up & tagged Bing Crosby's Sleigh Bell Serenade as explicit lol, maybe the line "every sleigh ride is a gay ride / You can sneak a hug `neath the old bear rug " set off a filter. Brook Benton's track & Glen Campbell's version of What Child Is This is pretty good too & so's Carolyn Kay & Grand Parees' A Christmas Halo. No thanks for the shuffle forcing me to remember Dominick the Donkey "hee haw, hee haww" though & Rag Mop isn't even a christmas/holiday song. )

Morning Christmas (they like the song so much they put on 6 of their comps & named one after it. o/t - "Here Comes Santa Clause" indeed smh - artist isn't credited again but it sounds like cheaply dashed off copyright free muzak for shops. The Cascades Rhythm of the Rain IS NOT by Ella Fitzgerald or a Christmas song & it sounds like a bland rerecording/cover version too (wtf amazon) Hang on, Big City & Tammy aren't christmas songs either. wtf there's also a Christmas rewrite of She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain?!?).

Christmas on Her Mind (How did The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping get on a bargain bin comp like this? wtf Edison Lighthouse doing a karaoke/soundalike but worse cover of Shaky? )

Shazam! (Tammy still isn't a christmas song & neither's Shazam! + Gee Whizz It's Christmas doesn't sound remotely like George Formby.)

A Mom and Dad for Christmas (Is this a Christmas album or a romance novel? - the title track is some sappy glurgy nonsense about god answering prayers, set in a universe where you can walk into an orphanage and take a kid home (after guilt tripping your wife) just like you're buying a puppy as a present (don't do that). No More Blues is an unconnected blues instrumental that only seems to exist on similar comps & might not even be by Conway Twitty. Wine, Women and Song is a christmas song now, I don't make the rules. yay at discovering The Surfaris's A Surfer's Christmas List - their dream present is shaped like this

Despite being a mix of tracks from The Beach Boys' Christmas Album & their never fully released 1977 Christmas album this comp doesn't include Morning Christmas. :-(

Despite what amazon's search claims Morning Christmas isn't on Now's offical playlist NOW That's What I Call Christmas (or Greatest Indie Folk). Shame, but I'm still hoping one year it'll finally get deservedly recognised as a true soulful Christmas song & get on a notable comp & yearly airplay etc.

does anyone else think that the guy who sings the original Frosty the Snowman song sounds like Danny DeVido?? I thought it was him singing it until like a year ago and I can't really accept it.
