KEYNOTE 2023 Hope Erin Phillips Hope Erin Phillips a programmer, multimedia artist, and professional hobby collector. They work at KO_OP in Montreal, as lead programmer on the recently released Goodbye Volcano High. Hope holds a BFA in Intermedia/Cyberarts, is working slowly through a second degree in biology, and is a Critical Hit 2015 alumni. Their personal work usually focuses on mental illness and queerness, and in their work at KO_OP they are proud to build systems that facilitate the expressions of unapologetically gay stories.

Are there, by chance, voice files of the female deputy actually speaking, or a name of the voice actor who recorded the sound effects?

The female Deputy never speaks, but it sounds to me like she has the same voice actor as one of the cultists. You can find a transcript of most of her lines in this document if you search for “CULT_FOLLOWER_FEMALE_05”. One of the Angels might be played by the same person too.

I know Randy Yuen did motion capture for the Deputy in general, and maybe the male Deputy has his voice, but there is no information about who played “CULT_FOLLOWER_FEMALE_05” and the female Deputy…

He always left his window half-cracked open, if not to hear the cicadas or the soft murmur of wind through trees than so Eugene could slip nimble fingers under the glass pane and push into his bedroom.

He didn't ever go to the door, and Sid didn't blame him none; they both still lived with their parents, and although he was sure he could explain this in some way that made any semblance of sense to either the Phillips or the Sledge’s, he didn't feel like he should.

This was just them. Always had been, in a way.

Eugene didn't make a noise, climbing up the side of the house and pushing through his window, foot hitting the wooden planks of Sid’s bedroom floor with nary a sound. Sid stayed in bed, face tilted up towards the ceiling, pretending to be asleep.

Unlike him, Eugene closed the window all the way, blocking out all noise that wasn't his breathing, steady and slow, or Sid’s own. Sid imagined that he could hear a heartbeat, and pretended that it ain’t his. 

He only knew that Eugene came closer when the mattress dipped with the weight of him, Eugene pushing under the covers of his bed to lay next to him without saying a word.

Sid rolled over, throwing an arm around Eugene’s waist and tugging him closer, his back to Sid’s chest, tangling their legs together and keeping his eyes closed. “Dream?” He asked, a tired murmur.

Because he didn't think there’s any way that Eugene Sledge would clamber through his window and climb into his bed with him like they were eight years old, all over again, for anything less than a dream.

Eugene’s hand found his – both of them scarred and calloused, marked by motors and mud – and laced their fingers together carefully. Sid couldn’t see his face, pressed his nose to the column of his neck.

“No.” Eugene whispered to him, socked foot rubbing absently along the length of Sid’s calf. “Just thinkin’.”

Oh.

That was even worse, than a dream.

“Good thoughts?” Sid asked, even though he knew that they wouldn’t be. Eugene leaned further back into him, and Sid tightened his grip to compensate for it.

“Not bad ones.” Eugene said, voice lilting around his words and softening them. “Just… different.”

“Different.”

“Mm. Thoughts I wouldn’t have had, before.”

What before was went unsaid, because it could. Because neither of them wanted to say it. Sid pressed his lips to Eugene’s pulse point almost absently.

“I’ve been havin’ more of those, too.” He said, like he was maybe at absolution. Like he had a confession. “All turned around on ‘em. They ain’t bad, just different.”

Eugene’s fingers smoothed along the back of his hand, where it rested over his sternum. “We got different minds now, I think.” He said, almost softly. “From what we had before.”

Sid hummed. “Guess it comes with gettin’ older.” He said, trying to feel wise, drowsiness not-withstanding. 

“Guess so.”

They were both about a million years old, now. Sid turned twenty-two three weeks ago, Eugene following after him a week after that. Both old enough to watch a nation turn, both old enough to watch friends turn into dust.

The thought made Sid close his eyes again. “What’re you doin’ tomorrow?” He asked, and Eugene hummed.

“Thinkin’ I’ll go down to the wharf.” He said. “Then, if it’s too busy, go out to the woods. Try and find somethin’ new.”

“Mind if I go with you?”

“Don’t you got a job?”

“I don’t have to go if I don’t want to. Don’t think I will, tomorrow. Not like my parents’ll do anything.” Sid would rather stay with Eugene, who shifted in his hold.

“I’d like it,” Eugene murmured. “If you’d go with me.” 

Sid just pressed his lips to Eugene’s neck again, letting himself be lulled back into a half-sleep.

He didn’t really mind much, being so old. Being so different. So long as Gene kept climbing through his window.

Something I've been wondering since a lot of the older cats tend to get cast younger and younger recently - are there any performers you could plausibly see as "real" younger versions of those characters?

Anon, that is actually a super interesting question (and I hope I'm understanding what you're asking for; apologies if I misunderstood - if you are asking whether there are performers who have not played the role but played others and can get away with playing them, honestly I'm not a big proponent of having all super young swings and understudies, and I've spoken at length about that before), but there *are* actually a handful of performers of past (which means that they *were* young when they initially took the role and looked it) and present that I could feasibly see as younger (and by "younger" I mean like more in the 20s) faceclaims or "versions" of my beloved older cats (and that I often will note back too when I'm trying to picture them in my mind).

From what I have heard and seen of them, they also give off more of a younger vibe, either due to the lack of maturity in their voices, or their general dispositions, that I think works well as these characters but younger. Imagine a different bunch of teenagers and gapped teeth babies running around the Junkyard hollering at one another and whining at their parents before *they* became the parents, ahaha.

2024 Reading Goals

Hello hello! Happy New Year to all!

Fun fact, by posting this at 11:00am GMT, 2023 has officially ended in all inhabited countries as UTC -11 is the last inhabited timezone.

I haven't been a resolutions person for a couple of years now but I admit I do love a challenge and goal setting. I also love reading. I'm sure you don't need the title to tell you where this is going. I've had goodreads since Sept, 2016 and have been taking part in their reading challenge since 2020. I've met my goal evey year except 2021 and I hope to make three years in a row this year!

2023's goal was an ambitious 48 books and I somehow managed to read 48 (I attribute a good 1/3 to getting a library card and access to libby). 18 of those books were comics/manga though and while I do believe anything with a ISBN counts, I'd like for comics & manga to only be about 25% of my books instead of the current 38%. I feel like I might be setting myself up a bit but I'm not going to be too upset if at the end of the year, I don't lower the percentage. This is just a bit of fun.

Paralympic champ Ellie Cole and her partner have first child

Aussie Paralympic legend Ellie Cole and her partner Silvia have announced the birth of their first child this week.

The retired swimmer and wheelchair basketballer is Australia’s most decorated female Paralympian.

This week, Ellie announced on Instagram that her newborn son Felix had unexpectedly arrived a few weeks early.

“They say when your own child is born, it is one of the greatest miracles you could ever hope for,” Ellie wrote.

“We are feeling so blessed. Felix Parker Cole joined our family this morning, unexpectedly, three weeks early.

“We know that he will make us see the world in an entirely different way. Welcome to the world, little Felix. All we see is you.”

Ellie Cole retired in 2022 after incredible medal haul

The swimmer and wheelchair basketballer retired from competition after the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and an incredible 17 Paralympic medals, including six golds.

Ellie Cole told the ABC in December 2021 that she and her partner Silvia met at the London Games in 2012.

“She was an events planner for the Paralympic committee. I met her at one of the post-game celebrations and we had the greatest time,” Ellie recalled.

“We got to know each other quite well after the London Games. We were both really struggling with post-Games blues, as a lot of athletes and staff members do.

“When we’re struggling through those times we really lean on each other to get through that.

“It was really nice to spend time with somebody who wasn’t an athlete but understood that experience.”

Ellie Cole awarded Australia Day Honours

Just two weeks ago, Ellie received a Member of the Order of the Australia award in this year’s Australia Day honours.

Ellie was awarded for her “significant service to sport as an advocate for diversity and inclusion” of Australians with a disability.

“I have always loved the way that sport has been able to ‘level the playing field’ for Australia,” she said at the time.

“So, in saying that, I am feeling extremely humbled to be appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

“This award in particular acknowledges just how important inclusion has and always will be in shaping Australia’s landscape.

“The journey has been a privilege so far and I look forward to continuing the pursuit of a more inclusive country.”

I recently bought a McCartney bio by Phillip Norman :/ Is Bob Spitz a better source in your opinion?

I haven’t read any of Spitz (or Norman for that matter) but I can pass on some of the analysis Erin Torkelson Weber did of his work in her book:

“As a musician and writer, Spitz’s musical analysis of the group’s catalog is written with authority and depth and, like MacDonald, owes a significant debt to Lewisohn’s scholarship. His evaluation of the band’s music and the Lennon/McCartney partnership reinforced the emerging interpretation that both men were equally essential in creating the band’s genius. However, Spitz flatly rejects other elements of McCartney’s version of the band’s story. The Beatles: The Biography presents perhaps the most negative evaluation of the men’s friendship since Goldman’s The Lives of John Lennon. According to Spitz, Lennon’s jealousy and McCartney’s manipulative personality began to erode their close friendship shortly after Julia Lennon’s death. “Even then, there was great jealousy there. He was all too aware of Paul’s talent and wanted to be as good and grand himself… He wasn’t about [to] let somebody like Paul McCartney pull his strings.” McCartney’s willingness in 1962 to trade in the Beatles trademark leather stage outfits for more commercially appealing suits is identified as the first irreparable schism between the two. The conflicts resulting from their contradictory personalities only widened by the time of 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band “all intimacy had disappeared from their relationship. In contrast to Shout!, Spitz clearly identifies Ono’s presence and Lennon’s obsession with her as undermining the band, and his portrayal of Klein is unrelentingly critical. However, he condemns McCartney’s behaviour as well and argues that, by the time of Abbey Road, relations between McCartney, Harrison and Lennon had degenerated to the point where the latter two could not bear to be in the same room with “clever”, “‘manipulative”, “controlling Paul”.

One of the The Beatles: The Biography’s key strengths is Spitz’s refusal to engage in favouritism; the work strives to maintain the author’s balance despite his tendency towards presenting the most negative interpretation on “the inside of the event” as possible. By declining to champion a particular Beatle, Spitz’s work demonstrates writers’ emerging tendency to present more balanced interpretations of the group’s story.”

Based on the above quote it looks like Spitz’s strengths are musical analysis and balance which is great for a Paul bio. However, if you’re arguing that John and Paul’s friendship started to deteriorate when Julia Lennon died (even 1970/71 John wasn’t saying that!!) I’m not sure how much your interpretations can be relied on so it definitely seems like Spitz may not be overly negative in recounting the Lennon-McCartney partnership and relationship, since that’s such a fundamental part of Paul’s life and career it’s up to you how much him getting that wrong would put you off!

A/N: This is my first time writing for Mouse and the longest fic I’ve written, so hopefully everyone likes it! :)

Masterlist

It was Mouse’s first day in Intelligence, it was finally the day that he was going to turn his life around. No longer living in sketchy areas and gaining felonies but instead becoming a legit member of society and working for a reputable institution, the Chicago police department. He had been recommended to the boss by his friend and former military buddy Jay Halstead, who unlike himself, had managed to get a proper holding in society after being discharged from the Rangers. This was finally his chance to show Jay and everyone else who cares about him that he could do something else good with his life and that he was more than just his time in the military.

Meeting Jay outside the district, the two men embrace in a warm hug, briefing saying their hellos and reminiscing on old times before they ascended the stairs. They pasted Sergeant Platt, Jay giving her a small hello in which she ignored and Mouse, despite having only met her once, gave her a polite smile. Punching in the passcode alongside his handprint, he unlocked the door climbing the second set of stairs up to the place he would call ‘home’ for hopefully years to come. Reaching the top Jay paused, Mouse quick to follow his actions.

“Guys this is Mouse, Mouse this is the Unit. That’s Dawson, Lindsay, Olinsky, Atwater, Nadia, and Sergeant Voight’s in his office.” The people in the room all averted their gaze from their own individual work, with Voight even exiting his office to greet him as well, to greet the newest member of the team, all presenting him with a momentary smile, short greeting, or handshake.

“Oh and Y/LN and Ruzek are currently out chasing up a lead right now but should be back soon,” Jay quickly followed up, trying to familiarise his buddy up with as much as possible to make him as comfortable as he could, knowing mouse struggled with rejoining society.

“Ok-k, well it's good meeting everyone, and I hope I can be of assistance to you all,” he mumbled out nervously, he admired Jay and Voight for giving him this opportunity but it still didn’t stop the feelings that they had a level of superiority over him due to their jobs. Taking him downstairs to his own tech room, he prompted Mouse to take a look around to get accustomed to his surroundings.

“What do you think buddy?

“I think it will do the job just fine,” he smiled back to jay reassuring him that he could do this.

“Ok, well if you’re all good I’ve got work to do myself,” Jay announced before turning and leaving Mouse to his own devices, finally leaving him to prove himself worthy.

Mouse’s day was hectic, to say the least. Members of the team were constantly in and out of the tech room or calling him, getting him to give them vital information as quickly as he possibly could. But he thrived in the conditions present, what previously was extreme anxiety when he first entered turned into adrenaline. He hadn’t experienced such a high-intensity situation since his time at the Rangers, but he loved it. The Rangers was the place he felt most at home and alive, but the ‘accident’ had caused him to be honourably discharged. He wanted to be back in Afghanistan with Jay and his other military buddies desperately, feeling as though he had a place there, that he was actually contributing something good to the world, but this would do for the time, this was the best thing for him right now.

From what he could figure out, the unit was dealing with a human trafficking case in which multiple girls were found dead by the Docks, thrown into a container, and starved to death. Pulling up the names of multiple different men, he stared into their eyes as the pictures came up on his screen and felt no remorse for them as he heard each man be dragged into the cage one by one. The team managed to successfully find lead after lead, deciding to either all roll out together or keep sending Ruzek and Y/LN out. It was already about halfway through the day and Mouse still had not met the said people, only occasionally hearing their voices or being told to send them the information he was finding.

As the day further progressed things started to flatline, leads found previously being a bust and nobody seeming to find anything worthwhile. The whole team worked tireless upstairs as Mouse found them the material they needed downstairs. Finally, after an hour of absolutely nothing, Dawson managed to get vital information from a CI and so a feasible lead was afoot. As the others were gearing up and getting ready to finally make some arrests, Jay popped his head into Mouse’s tech cave.

“Mouse I need you to send me the information on Spencer Phillips ASAP,” he was just about to walk out when he turned his head slightly to utter a few final words to his friend,

“And good job buddy, we really appreciate it.” Mouse smiled as he looked up the information for Jay, maybe he was going something good for the world, especially if his dearest friend thought so.

The lead had been successful and two arrests of notable people in a human trafficking ring were arrested. The case was not fully closed, the organisation still up and running, but the perpetrators of the murders were put away to never see a day in the sun again. That was enough for Voight to warrant the members of his team a break to go home, rest and in the younger detective's case visit the local bar, Molly’s. Coming back up to the main room Jay greeted Mouse, patting him on the back for a job well done, he had underestimated his friend, thinking that he may struggle with his job just as he had coped with his anxiety and PTSD after coming back from the Middle East. Walking further into the room Mouse finally got to see the infamous man who had manage to evade his line of sight for the whole working day, Adam Ruzek. Approaching him he finally got to introduce himself.

“Hi, it's nice to finally meet you”

“Yeah, you too Mouse, I feel like I’ve been swept off my feet the whole day, you coming to Molly’s”

“I wasn’t planning to but sure why not?” Mouse had a vague idea of what Molly’s was, Jay sometimes talking about the bar run by first responders, but he was excited to finally see it for himself. Turning to Jay, who was packing his stuff up at his desk, he assumed he would want to go to the bar alongside the rest of the team,

“Molly’s then?” He smirked knowing Jay would never turn him or drinking down,

“Of course.” Leaving the district together, the two guys headed in the direction of the bar relieved to finally get away from work and have some downtime. Unbeknown to them you were in the changing room with Kim chatting away, excited to go for a drink and ready to go upstairs to meet the new tech guy. Little did you know you would be very disappointed when you did so.

Arriving at the bar the men settled into the unit's usual booth at the back of the bar, flagging down Hermann to get two beers so that they could finally unwind from a long day of stressful events.

“The rest of the team should be here shortly, but how was your first day buddy, tell me all,” Jay asked hoping that his friend liked the position so that he could work towards becoming an outstanding member of the community and chuffed that he was working alongside his best friend once more.

“It was good man, I don’t really know what else to say about it. Um..I finally felt as if I was doing something with myself, I felt that adrenaline I missed from the Rangers, but I miss it, the thrill, the relationships, everything really Jay.” Jay sighed not knowing what to say, annoyed at his friend for missing it, he had spent so long trying to pull Mouse out of that bad place, a constant cycle of anxiety, depression, and PTSD, that it hurt him that he wanted to go back. The tense situation was interrupted by the rest of the team arriving, taking up the rest of the room in the booth with Erin snuggling up to Jay and Adam getting up to buy a round for the table. All the usual suspects were there enjoying themselves, except one, you.

You had gone home to shower and get out of your work clothes before making your way to meet the rest of the team for some rest and relaxation, maybe nestling a few beers throughout the night. Making your way into the bar, you passed members of firehouse 51, making small talk with them before moving towards Hermann to get yourself an alcoholic beverage. Thanking him you turned to walk over to your unit's table, spotting an unfamiliar figure in the corner of the booth next to jay, which you could assume was the new tech guy Mouse.

“Christ Y/LN where have you been?” Your partner Adam boomed, already a little tipsy from the two beers he had consumed.

“Sorry I had to go home first, wanted to freshen up,” you smiled amused at how much of a lightweight Adam really was, despite claiming otherwise.

“Y/N this is Mouse, I don’t think you’ve met yet,” Jay interrupted you, drawing your attention away to introduce you to the nervous man beside him. Looking him dead in the eyes, you noticed how attractive he was, you had just presumed that Mouse would be less than average looking considering his measly nickname, but no, the man in front of you was undeniably handsome with a charming smile and deep blue eyes.

“Hi, it's nice to meet you, sorry I didn’t meet you earlier, seems like we were both at the wrong place at the wrong time,” you gave a shy smile, sitting down next to Kevin trying to look confident despite the nervousness you felt inside.

“I-its good to meet you to Y/N, seems like the universe is not in our favour huh?” He stuttered equally as nervous, for what you assumed was first-time jitters, but little did you know it was because he found you equally as attractive.

Throughout the night you continued talking with all members of your unit but especially Mouse. You felt naturally drawn to him, not just because of your attraction but also the stories he told that fascinated you, some from his days in the rangers and other ones from his childhood. By the end of the night, you too had managed to move to sit next to each other, with the members of your unit seeing you hit it off immediately and so pushed you together hoping for another office romance. Completely enamoured by him, you didn’t even notice that the other people in the bar were starting to trickle out slowly and Hermann’s last order was thirty minutes ago. Finally noticing your surroundings after the bartender had called your name and told you it was closing time, you checked your watch noticing the late time. Turning to Mouse you smiled and softly spoke about the revelation,

“I didn’t even realise how late it was, maybe we should get out of here, wait wait! Not like that, well unless you want you.” Noticing what you had said, you shyly smiled hoping he wouldn’t think you were too weird.

“That sounds good,” he cheekily smirked moving out of the booth, allowing you to get out too and heading towards the doors of the bar, saying a brief goodnight to Hermann on your way out. You walked down the street together to where your cars were parked, going at a slow pace, trying to extend your time together for as long as possible. Locating your car you stood next to it as you went to say your goodbyes to the handsome man in front of you.

“Thank you for keeping me company tonight, I really enjoyed it”

“Yeah me too, but I was hoping we could do it again sometime, just you and me?” Completely taken aback you stuttered to think of your response, you weren’t not thrilled about it at all, just completely surprised that he liked you as you did him.

“I’d love to Mouse, give me your phone,” handing you his phone you put your number in, silently hoping he would be one of those guys that actually use your number instead of ignoring it completely. Proceeding to hand it back, you both stood in silence not knowing what to say. But in this situation, no words were needed, only actions. So when he leaned in to place his lips, you gladly reciprocated the affection, wrapping your arms around his neck and deepening the kiss. Little did you know this would lead to a lifetime of desire and devotion.
