The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton
A friend gave me this book with the promise that I would love it, but agonizingly so… He was right, of course. The House of Mirth stands out in my mind as both the companion to and antithesis of Fitzgerald’s Gatsby, peeling back the thin veneer of the glittering upper classes to expose the ugliness within. Like Lily, so many spend their lives groping desperately for a paradise just out of reach; in the end, there are no winners and the paradise we seek is a mere mirage. Despite over a century separating Wharton’s work from present day, the author’s core attack on the haut monde rings true now more than ever, cementing this story’s standing as a timeless classic.

I have to say that Lily Bart and Blanche DuBois share a considerable vibe in Gillian Anderson's inner landscape (I have watched "A Streetcar named Desire" last night and I'm massively blown away by it still!) .
Ever since I started becoming familiar with parts-work, I have been ever more interested in the roles that actors pick and see them differently but with more interest and enjoyment often. There is a whole essay to say about that but I really just wanted to say that they have a very similar vibe as characters. I think I prefer Blanche DuBois a bit though for her unsuspecting way, my heart did very doting and bursting and caring things when I watched everything starting from Blanche's birthday, that still has me in shambles! Gillian did an extraordinary job, I don't think this is comparable to anything I've seen before. It's achingly beautiful, is all I can say. 💖

yes there's a stack of scifi books on my shelf. yes I'm rereading House of Mirth instead. I can't help it, I'm getting emotional about Lily and Selden.

Patrick James Miller Fairfield University
Patrick James Miller photographed Dr. Emily Orlando for Fairfield University Magazine. Patrick captured portraits of Dr. Orlando to accompany an interview on her forthcoming book The Decoration of Houses, coming out this October with Syracuse University Press. Dr. Orlando employs her renowned expertise on the 20th-century writer Edith Wharton, focusing on her ever-expanding reputation as she seems “to have foreseen the excesses, obsessions, and spectacles of our current climate.”
