if you want to learn a language and have a library card, check if your local library has Mango. i just switched to it from duolingo and while it's not as game-y i feel like it explains things well so far in terms of grammer (duolingo did not imo), and it has plenty of languages!

i saw Icelandic, Greek (Modern, Ancient, and Koine), Irish (Gaeilge), Yiddish, Potawatomi, Scottish Gaelic, Igbo, Haitian Creole, Cherokee, Kazakh, and Uzbek. just to highlight a few i dont often see elsewhere!

it's even got Shakespearean English, and some quick courses like German for Oktoberfest, Mandarin for business, Spanish for legal and medical purposes, Russian slang, and Brazilian Portuguese for soccer events. these arent all of the quicker courses, but i thought that was really cool!

anyway im not paid, this isnt an ad, im just someone with an interest in languages and a love for public libraries who wanted to encourage you to check it out!

Hey y'all! So I am still in touch with the kidlet I used to babysit, and last time we talked I used (what I am pretty sure was) slang that is more his generation than mine and he initially laughed a little, then I could visibly see him process that I was the one who'd said it and he started giggling uncontrollably and repeating what I'd said, so of course I want to learn more slang I can drop in conversation with him We were playing Stardew Valley and I killed a skeleton or something, and he said "Skeletons will die if you hit them with swords" so I said "skill issue" (or something like that? it's been a few days I could have a few words wrong, but I definitely said skill issue and he was not expecting it) So yeah any more modern but not tumblr-specific slang y'all can recommend I drop into conversation with an elementary schooler to make them laugh at the idea of a grown up using slang?

I think about how I was taught in Spanish how to refer to given bowel symptoms as "los siempres" (diarrhea) and "las nuncas" (constipation). It never occurred to me how hilariously different it sounds translated into English. Because if I say "tengo los siempres," to someone in Spanish they're just like "hay está esta medicina, que te vaya bien." But in English, I sound like some child in a horror scenario that's possessed by an evil being that's appearing in the mirror:

"I have The Always." Or "I have The Nevers."

Got it. Demons in my blood it is. I have no shadow. The walls are leaking a strange fluid and the stench is atrocious.
