Oh, an article looking back at Farscape, and why it ended with a miniseries! I already know the story myself, I was active in the fandom, but I wonder who's posting about it...
Huh! Syfy Wire, that's a subsite from Syfy Channel!
Hey!
Hey, Syfy!
You wanna know why Farscape ended in a miniseries? You, Syfy Channel, want to crack the case on why the Syfy Channel tv show, Farscape, ended in a miniseries?
*leans in close* C'mere. Come on over. I'll tell you.
BECAUSE YOU CANCELED IT.

Hey I am trying to write a fanfic right now and I saw you had some Dave Rygalski headcanons before so... do you have any Dave headcanons about his home life and like him outside of the characters we see on the show?
Hey, I am so sorry for not replying sooner but how sweet of you to think of my headcanons! It really warms my heart to see people still actually interacting with those Dave posts. I’m guessing my input will be irrelevant for your fic by now but I still love this as a prompt so I figure it would be fun to still write and post a reply. Also if/when the fic is up and running please send me a link so I may devour it!!
I never thought all that much about Dave’s homelife. I assume he’s in a two-parent household, but unsure about siblings pets and general family dynamics. Now that I’m thinking about it Dave does seem like the type to have sisters, maybe two or three. He doesn’t strike me as someone with active drama going on with his family during the show (which would be a rare sight on Gilmore Girls), but then again that’s just my take. If I remember correctly he is canonically Jewish, but as a European gentile I don’t exactly find myself informed enough to make religious or too culturally specific headcanons for a Jewish US American boy in 2000s New England.
What I do headcanon is that Dave, Zack and possibly Brian all come from a neighbouring town instead of Stars Hollow. I know US small towns can be a lot bigger than what we define as small towns where I’m from, but Lane’s never met Dave before the band and Stars Hollow is a tiny town with presumably only one high school. They should’ve met by season 3 if Dave was a townie.
I also headcanon that he can’t wait to get out of small town life, which is why he applies to study in California. I don’t think he hates small towns (if he did he would spend a lot less time in ST and a lot more doing daytrips to NY) but he’s probably never truly felt at home and hopes to find that sense of belonging in a physically bigger place. Whether he’s right about that assessment or not is a whole ‘nother case though. I think he has a really tough first year in college getting used to a far noisier and busier city and not having that safe group to constantly fall back on like he would back in New England.
Another headcanon specifically about everyday homelife is that Dave is the technician of the family. Because of his audio-tech passion his parents and potential siblings just assume he’s great at all tech and electricity, forcing him to be the one who has to figure out how to fix a faulty satellite and learn the fuse box, and at some point just switch out all the lightbulbs in the house.
Other headcanons I have which have little to do with homelife include:
Dave’s more of a sci fi geek than fantasy geek (not that all fantasy fanboys know Tolkien inside out but in GG he would’ve picked up on Mrs Kim’s quote… also he’s big into sound tech and I headcanon him as eventually getting into tech period). The boy knows his Asimov, his Analog, his Star Trek, his battlestar Galactica and most definitely keeps tabs on the Syfy Channel.
Sci fi preference be damned that boy is doing something tabletop related and my money is on either Dungeons & Dragons (the guys is studious af and has Brian and Zach as friends) or Magic the Gathering (and yes he would spend all his lunch money and then his student loans on the damn cards)
He might have anxiety (not to do armchair psychology but there’s a vibe. The ones who know, know)
He could become a little tech broish while studying in California (I mean Silicon Valley is right there) but I think it would just be a phase and that he’s more obsessed with nerding out over how things work than spreading the Web3 gospel. And I still stand by my headcanon that he goes into sound engineering or sound related tech for work after college.
Tardiness be damned I hope this was a fun and somewhat insightful read, if only on how I tend to headcanon these folk!

For your salty ask questions : 7, 20 and 22 love your options on things
7.) Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?
So the show Eureka. The fandom itself had issues while I was a part of it, though I did a pretty good job of steering clear of the worst of it until towards the end of the show's run.
Eureka was a SyFy channel show that aired while I was in college and for the most part I really liked it. But... one of the main characters, Allison, had an autistic child whose treatment by the show made me very uncomfortable for reasons I didn't really understand at the time because, well... I was pretty ignorant about autism at the time.
They basically treated this kid as a plot device. The mom didn't seem interested in figuring out how to communicate in ways the kid was comfortable with but instead being devastated that the only time he communicated in ways she was comfortable with was when he was semi-possessed by some science-magic-thing. That was killing him. The kid eventually creates an Einstein-Rosen bridge (wormhole) to facilitate his mom and some others to time travel in order to butterfly effect the future just enough that he's not autistic. Like, it's heavily implied that the kid did that. on purpose. after which he finally became a real character and not a plot device and his mom sabotaged the other characters attempts to fix the timeline because she liked this version of her son better.
... yeah...
And usually this is where I'd go looking for fix fics and I did look for some because even with not knowing much about autism at the time even I knew that last part with the kid erasing himself from history to replace himself with a not-autistic and not-really-him version of himself was really bad writing. If you have to replace your autistic character with a non-autistic version in order to make him an active character in your show, you're a shitty show runner and/or writer.
But honestly I just wasn't finding any at the time. Maybe there are some now, maybe I wasn't looking in the right places. But I was starting to run more and more into misogynistic or racist treatments of Allison as I became less and less interested in fics that included her directly. At which point the show was over, I wasn't really enamored with either it or the fandom anymore, and it was time to move on.
To some degree I do miss it. It started while I was in high school and it was something I continued to watch on weekends with my parents during college (along with Doctor Who and a few other shows). It had a lot of really fun things going and I had a good fandom friend for Eureka and FF8 who I've since lost touch with. But in retrospect, and having since learned more about autism and why the quest to 'cure' it is basically eugenics... it's really hard to look back on the show without being appalled by how ableist it really was. So though I might miss it, I sincerely doubt I'll ever rewatch it or return to the fandom.
20.) What is the purest ship in the fandom?
Yeah I have no idea. I think 'purest ship' is kind of a silly metric because nothing is every going to be perfect or 'pure'. And with the rise of purity culture here on tumblr over the last several years, even though I would be just joking around to name a ship as the purest... it still feels like I'd be invoking the idea of moral superiority for shipping the pure ships. So honestly, the question makes me a little uncomfortable for how it's phrased.
If I were to rephrase it as the ship with the least baggage attached, then maybe Barrisco, Westhawne, or Snowest for the Flash. The characters still have to work out problems that arise between them over the course of the show, but these three have what feels like - to me anyway - the least amount of baggage weighing them down in their interactions together and canon relationships be they platonic or romantic. But I wouldn't call them pure ships because I really just don't think there's any such thing.
22.) Popular character you hate?
It's hard to think of one because even villains I tend to hate in a love to hate way. At the characters I don't hate in the love to hate way - like Mark Blaine - are more often than not fandom unfavorites anyway.
I don't hate Felicity, but I don't like her the way I used to either. Characterization marches on and all that.
I'll still pop in on the Supernatural fandom sometimes despite the show eventually making all the main characters kind of unlikable (or maybe it was the trauma conga line getting forever darker that made it feel hard to like anything while watching it anymore...) but the fanon versions of the characters are still enjoyable to me.
I don't hate Steve from the MCU but by the time he was written out of the franchise he was... very much not my Captain America anymore. Largely because they made him too much of a self centered hypocrite with never my fault/consequences avoidant tendencies that are at odds with what I like about the character from the comics I've read. (Admittedly not a lot of comics, as I prefer other marvel comics characters over Captain America like Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy as Ghost-Spider and Jane's run as Thor...) But honestly... what else could I expect when the movies were taken over by people who were on the record as hating all the characters? I may not like this version of Steve anymore, but I find it hard to hate a character I know was being deliberately written badly.
Gwen from Torchwood mind raped her fiance/future husband to avoid him leaving her for cheating on him and... I really don't like her for that but given all the shit the other Torchwood characters get up to it feels a little strong to say I hate her for it. I hate the way the narrative treated her as a morality pet but she was, in many ways, just another victim of the way working for Torchwood - even Jack's Torchwood - eventually eroded a person's sense of ethics. And the show runners trying a bit too hard to be edgy. (Though admittedly, sometimes I do hate her for it, usually when I'm rewatching that part of the show in the wrong mood.)

i remember watching the first paranormal activity back in the day and thinking it was cool in the spirit of that era where “reality tv” ghost shows like the Syfy channel’s Ghost Hunters (of TAPs fame for those familiar with them) and the lesser but probably wildly more popular Ghost Adventures were doing super well and suddenly ghost stories were super cool.
but then the sequels happened and I lost all respect for it as it progressed. also the ending to the first movie was completely different when I first watched. Katie was shot down by the cops when I watched it, but then they changed it to that ridiculous ghoulish smile and lunge for the camera ending because they wanted to make a bajillion sequels.
but watching a few scenes of the second and third movie recently I respect how they worked to cast children who looked exactly like those two sisters lol. i might give the other movies a second chance just because i miss found footage horror. but seriously, the original ending to that movie was way better.

Entertainment Spotlight: Ruth Righi, Sydney To The Max
Before Disney Channel’s hit sitcom Sydney to the Max, Ruth Righi had her big break in School of Rock on Broadway, and then made the move to television with SyFy’s action-comedy Happy! opposite Christopher Meloni. In Sydney to the Max, which was recently renewed for a third season, Ruth plays Sydney, the youngest member of the three-generation Reynolds household. Living with her dad, Max (Ian Reed Kesler), and her grandmother, Judy (Caroline Rhea), Sydney’s preteen pursuits hilariously expand as they intertwine with flashbacks of her father’s childhood experiences in the same house. When she isn’t on set, Ruth can be found at the dance studio, making pottery, or playing the bass. Ruth took the time to answer some of our questions. Check it out:
If you could wake up in a fictional world of your choosing, what would it be?
I would have to say Wonderland. The original Alice in Wonderland is one of my all-time favorite movies and being in a world like that for even just a day would be so incredibly magical.
If all the characters in Sydney to the Max were animals, which animal do you think Sydney would be, and why?
If Sydney were an animal, I feel like she would be a lioness cub. She resembles a lioness cub to me because she is playful, rebellious, and determined, but also often makes mistakes and learns from them.
In the show, Sydney and young Max get into similar situations, connecting with each other through their childhoods. What do you think would happen if the two characters met with Max as a kid?
I think that if Sydney and Max met as kids, they would instantly become friends. Even though their personalities are different at that age, they would bond through their love for similar activities and would go on some pretty fun adventures together.
What do you hope people take away from Sydney to the Max?
I hope people take away a few things from the show. I hope that people see the love and hard work we all put into the show and can relate to the subject matter. I hope that families can watch the show together and also engage in conversation about their parent's childhood memories. The series also shows how morals play into daily life, so I hope that kids can use Sydney's mistakes as an example when they are found in a similar situation.
Was there room for improvisation on set?
We always mess around on set when it comes to our lines. Whether it be an accent or a complete skit, we try to keep everyone on their toes.
Did any improvised moments make the final cut?
Quite a few of the cast's improv moments made it into the show, but seeing the ones that didn't in the blooper reel is always so, so fun.
Is there a particular story arc or plot point you’d like to see for Sydney?
The writers are so incredibly talented and always shock me with how well they depict Sydney's growth as a young adult and I can't wait to see what else they have in store for her. Any episode where I was able to incorporate music into the show has been super exciting, as well as getting to go into the past for an episode.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is getting to do what I love with people I love. I am always super excited to go to set and am continuing to learn from the adults who have so much knowledge on the making of shows.
What do you get up to between takes?
We dance, sing, play basketball, hang out in crafty (the food room), and laugh till we can't breathe.
Thanks for taking the time, Ruth!

I'm thinking about music for a sequence about the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland. It's the part of the script that briefly describes the region and how it inspired J.R.R. Tolkien in his quest to author Lord of the Rings.
The sequence runs about a minute of breathtaking LOTR geography. Mountains and forests shrouded in fog. Waterfalls falling from insane heights. Hidden figures. Incredible formations. The scale of it is just staggering to the eye. Especially in 4K.
So then the music.
What should it be?
I've been wrestling with this one in the background for a while now. It's not on deck for composing this very minute... but because it's LOTR, I can't help but wonder what the music's gonna be given that I'm the one on the hook to, you know, compose it.
I'm looking forward to hearing it. You know?
So in the absence of an obvious idea, my brain gravitated to an obvious idea: Orchestral. Dramatic. Which caused me to pull up a best of playlist on YouTube. As in best of Lord of the Rings music. That glorious soundtrack by Howard Shore. Just to get a feel for what I might be thinking about.
The first piece in the list was wildly and overly dramatic with apocalyptic choirs. The second piece, though, was pretty much what I had in mind. So I kept it humming in the back of my mind for awhile. And I listened to it.
And listened to it.
And listened to it.
Until one day I listened through it to the next cut which is the music of the Shire. It's the lovely, Irish colored music that speaks of home.
So now I kept that humming in the back of my mind for awhile. And I listened to it.
And listened to it.
And listened to it.
Until one day I thought to listen to some straight up Irish music to get a feel for the form.
So yeah.
YouTube again.
Only this time it wasn't very inspirational. Didn't lead to any insight on my part.
Until...
Until Battlestar Galactica came to mind. Not the original. The one from 2004.
But yeah. Battlestar Galactica?
Mmhmm. A song by composer Bear McCreary titled "Wander My Friends" that was used as a preparing for battle hymn...   or maybe a post-battle one.
Completely colored Irish. With lyrics in Gaelic.
BAM.
Not sure how my brain made the leap to the SyFy channel but there it was. In the back of my mind for awhile. Where I listened to it.
And listened to it.
Until not so long after my brain jumped to Ennio Morricone’s "Gabriel's Oboe" from the film "The Mission".
Yeah.
Not sure how that happened.
There's nothing Irish about it.
But that's where my brain is.
And of course of course of course.
Of course I'm completely adrift. That much is obvious. And I'll probably be adrift until I actually, actively begin the process of composing specific music for this one minute sequence on the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Instead of just fiddling with it, you know, in the back of my mind.

PAST
Hometown: Plant City Middle of Bumfuck Nowhere, Florida
triggers: instance of misgendering and reference to Joss’s dead name early on, stalking, violence, rape, self harm, substance abuse
[dead name mention] Joss Rose wasn’t always who they are now. Once upon a different time, Joss was Jocelyn and “she” was troubled. Or so people liked to think. Born the youngest of a set of twins, to a single mother, Joss never really fit into gender norms, or societal norms, for that matter. Whether it was going without a bra until long after most girls started wearing one, a disinterest in anything outside of their art, or an increasingly morbid sense of humor, Joss was an outcast from day one. Small town life was often the bane of Joss’s existence.
As a child, Joss enjoyed Little Mermaid, but more importantly, Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. Joss related to Melody on a level that they didn’t quite relate to Ariel. It sparked a love of all things mermaid, and all things Disney, in them and their art portrayed this. Their mother, Millie, taught them to sew and crochet, two activities that seemed to be the only “feminine” thing about their interests. They would alternate between drawing and painting to crochet and sewing, often designing their own clothes. They weren’t necessarily nerdy, but they had their loves. Mostly it was things like Harry Potter, Doctor Who, or other such media, but they also had a love of sports, predominantly hockey. They were a huge Tampa Bay Lightning fan and would often go to games when they had the chance. They were an excellent runner and ran track all throughout middle and high school.
However, in school they did often struggled with anything involving a majority of their body being seen by other people, but especially changing for PE and track. The idea of getting changed in front of other people unnerved them. It was when they felt most vulnerable, most exposed. It was also when they felt the least like themself. Seeing a female body under typically masculine clothing really hurt, but living in a small town, that was only known for a festival based on strawberries that often invited country and Christian musicians, being anything but straight and cisgender was asking for trouble. More trouble than Joss needed.
In high school, as their sense of self wavered further they withdrew into themself, their passion for costume design became even more apparent. They started cosplaying, attending conventions all over the state of Florida, as a way to be themself, without being themself. They tended to cosplay male characters, taking pride in their ability to pass a male, but refusing to think anything of it, in terms of how they felt. It was this that led them to find a college with a crafts department, where they could major in costume design.
They skipped eleventh grade and then received an early acceptance letter to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. With permission from their mother, and a number of legal officials, Joss took off. Moving from small town life, to big city, took Joss by surprise. They were in a place where people who weren’t straight and cisgender were more widely accepted, which made trying to find themself much easier. As a freshman, Joss began to experiment, with a lot of things. Between sexuality and gender identity, they found out a lot more about themself than they were ever expecting. This included the realization that they were trans.
For Joss, the idea of being anything but a female made perfect sense. They tried a lot of things over the next few years, in an attempt to figure out just who they were. They knew they didn’t identify fully as male, and definitely had no intentions to transition, but for the longest time couldn’t figure out just how they felt. Outside of gender being a completely social construct, they needed a label. It came in the form of the terms “genderqueer” and “non-binary” as well as the idea that there was an area between female and male. To Joss, being both agender and male made more sense and they quickly began to explore it as a full identity.
By the time Joss graduated, they had legally changed their name, going with a gender neutral name, as a way to alleviate the pressure from being misgendered, which quickly became a sore spot. Given their more feminine features, being called by male pronouns was a difficult thing to get across, especially given their decision to not transition. When they discovered the singular they as a pronoun, Joss jumped at the chance to use it. While it’s still hard to get people to use it, and they often encourage people to use male pronouns if unable to use it, the singular they felt right.
While in college, between balancing a job with the Pittsburgh CLO and cosplay commissions, their career as a cosplayer, youtuber, and twitch streamer took off. They won a number of cosplay contests and with their youtube channel they really became a household name in the Pittsburgh convention scene. Shortly after graduating from college they were a featured cosplayer on Syfy’s Heroes of Cosplay. They would then go on to be one of Twitch’s first partners and earn the money needed to move out to LA.
Once stationed in LA, Joss went headfirst into life as a streamer and cosplayer. Between winnings at cosplay contests, being invited as a guest to larger and larger conventions, their streaming, and their cosplay commissions, Joss was able to establish a life for themself. One that allowed them to take on international conventions and get their name even more known around the world. In 2015, they were invited as a guest to San Diego Comic Con, and took on a job as a costume designer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Thus sparking both their spot as a returning guest to SDCC, NYCC, and a job with DC as a costume designer for their films and consultant on their shows.
[stalking tw / violence tw] However, after a number of years in LA, Joss found themself overwhelmed by a growing fame that was starting to trouble them. They were more frequently recognized in public and with that came danger. Joss ended up being stalked repeatedly and it ended in a number of physical altercations and the cops being called. After over a year of court battles and a restraining order, Joss decided to leave LA. Their initial destination wasn’t Clover City, TN but they had someone who had commissioned a costume dress from them for some big pageant and was informed that the town could use someone with their talent. It was close to Nashville but just far enough that Joss didn’t think they’d have to worry about being recognized too often.
In the two years they’ve been in Clover City, Joss has flourished. They’ve done more work for the DCEU and found their place in the world again. Just famous enough to be recognized when they visit bigger cities for conventions but just the guy next door with the great sewing skills to everyone in town. The perfect balance they’d been missing in their life while in LA.
[rape tw / self harm tw / substance abuse tw] Under the seemingly perfect surface, however, Joss is starting to fall apart. While it’s been two years since they escaped the hell that was LA, Joss has only now started processing everything that happened to them. Including the fact that part of the court battles involved reliving multiple instances of rape. In trying to cope with it all, Joss has started being self destructive, both in the form of self medicating and self harm. Doing anything they can to stop the way their hands constantly shake and the nightmares that plague what sleep they get around their busy schedule.
Joss maintains various forms of social media that pertain directly to their career. Their twitch channel is often filled with in-cosplay gaming, cosplay building, and even live convention coverage. Their youtube channel is full of cosplay videos, tutorials on everything from how to sew to how to pack cosplays for conventions without breaking them, and everything in between.
When they’re not working, Joss spends their time running, watching hockey, hanging out in clubs, playing video games, or hanging out with their cat, Lena. They run at least one marathon a year, but typically more, and have even run the Boston and New York marathons. They have a giant comics collection and an annual pass for both Disneyland and Disney World. They’re also an avid swimmer.

Black Angels
Statues can be creepy as it is, with their never changing visages, eyes that seem to stare off right through us, and often towering above us. Even without any sort of haunted lore or tales of paranormal activity they can manage to creep us out, but add these elements and they truly catapult into the land of the eerie. Within the state of Iowa lie two such statues that are molded into the likenesses of angels, albeit taking on the color of black rather than white, and orbited by persistent legends and stories of the supernatural, ghosts, and curses.
Perhaps the most well know “black angel” stands menacingly overlooking the Oakland Cemetery of Iowa, in the United States, and it has gone on to become absolutely permeated with spooky lore and legend in the region. It is an imposing presence, towering 8 and a half feet over the ground, and although it is black now it wasn’t always so, which is actually a part of its unusual lore. The statue itself was bronze when it was first brought to the cemetery in 1912, as a burial monument for the wealthy Feldevert family. It was designed by an artist in Chicago by the name of Mario Korbel, who was commissioned by Teresa Dolezal Feldevert in order to eternally watch over her family’s gravesite, where her husband was buried and where her own son, Eddie, was also interred after having died of meningitis in 1891.
Tumblr media
The statue was installed in 1912, and was already notable for its rather disturbing stance, its sad face cowled and turned down, mostly hidden from view, and wings not gloriously uplifted as those of most cemetery angels were, giving it a rather somber and creepy ambiance. Shortly after this arrival, Eddies body was moved to sit right alongside the statue, while at the same time the ashes of Teresa’s husband were placed right beneath it. Teresa’s own ashes were interred there as well when she died of cancer in 1924, and it was from around this point that the rather ominous looking statue began to accrue is sinister reputation. It was noticed that right after Teresa’s ashes were placed here the statue seemed to very rapidly turn from a shiny bronze to an unsettling greenish black color, which was probably the result of oxidation of the metal but which was rapid and alarming enough that it helped launch the statue into scary local lore, with the change said to be caused by paranormal forces from beyond our understanding, and legends began to spring up to explain it.
One of the most popular of these legends is that Teresa was far from an angel herself, that behind closed doors she was a wicked and sinful woman, even a practitioner of black magic, with some even whispering that she had in fact murdered her son, and that this malevolent energy surrounding her had transferred to the statue upon her death to taint it and cause it to turn is oppressive black, a permanent testament to her evil past. In one version of the tale the statue turned black suddenly one evening after a thunderstorm and lightning strike, and this has all also led to the idea that the intimidating statue is actually cursed, with a few versions of how this malicious paranormal power manifests. In one story any girl who is kissed at the angel’s feet during a full moon will die within 6 months, in another touching the angel on Halloween night will lead to death in 7 years, actually kissing it will cause instantaneous death from heart failure, and a pregnant woman who walks under its wings is said to lose her child.
The Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery has gone on to become a permanent fixture of local legend, gathering about itself a persistent reputation as a haunted place, with apparitions and odd phenomena roving about it, and it is indeed a popular destination for paranormal investigators, who have managed to capture odd photographs and EVP phenomena in the vicinity. One famous investigation of the Black Angel was carried out by the SyFy channel TV show Haunted Highway, during which time no one dared touch it, although they did allegedly manage to produce evidence in the form of sudden inexplicable temperature fluctuations within the statue. The menacing statue has unfortunately also become a magnet for macabre curiosity seekers and thrill seekers, many of which have vandalized the statue over the years, although no word on whether the curse got them for that. Is this all urban legend or is there any reality to it at all? The cemetery is open to the public all year round, so go check it out yourself and make up your own mind, just go right on past the wrought iron gate, through the twisted trees, and face the sorrowful visage of the Black Angel, staring right back and silently daring you to touch it.
At another cemetery, also in Iowa, is yet another black angel surrounded by dark history and myth. Here we come to a place called Fairview Cemetery, at Council Bluffs, in Iowa City. The cemetery itself is one of the oldest in the state, born as an Indian burial ground before being used by Mormon settlers of the region. In 1919 the wife of a Civil War Veteran and railway engineer named General Grenville M. Doge was buried here, a woman by the name of Ruth Anne Browne, and the angel was erected to serve as a guardian of her grave. The statue was crafted by a Daniel Chester French, who also happens to have been the same man who would go on to create the Lincoln Memorial Statue in Washington DC, and it was apparently formed in the likeness of an angel who had appeared in the dead woman’s dreams and premonitions before her death. According to Ruth’s daughter, these were extremely vivid visions, with her saying:
We realized this was no dream, no ordinary occurrence, but an apparition such as appeared to those saints of olden times, who were spiritual seers, holy enough to penetrate the fleshly veil and view spiritual things hidden from the worldly minded.
Ruth had described to her family of seeing an angel in white atop a boat covered with flowers that sprang from a thick mist at a rocky shore, and who carried some sort of shallow urn under her arm filled with water that “glittered and sparkled like millions of diamonds.” This vision would come to her a total of three times, each time with the angel offering the water to drink and being refused until the last time, with Ruth’s death occurring just days after she finally drank of it in her final dream, although she had claimed that the water had given in fact her immortality. As such, the statue in question depicts a beautiful maiden with an urn of water that perpetually pours water into a fountain below it.
Tumblr media
While the statue looks serene and calm, it has still managed to draw to it all manner of tales of strange phenomena surrounding it. One is that locals claimed that it will actually move and even fly about at night before returning to its perch in the morning, and it is said to often visit new graves to stand over them in solemn silence, whether in belevolence or not know one knows. More sinister tales say that the statue are rather malevolent, such as causing children to disappear, shooting fire from her mouth, and her gaze said to bring death and misfortune if you are to look into her eyes for too long or touch her beckoning outstretched hand. Of course it too has taken on a rather dark color that makes it appear more threatening and has surely helped fuel the stories, with folklore professor Todd Richardson, from the University of Nebraska, saying of this:
In the case of the Black Angel, it sounds creepy and it looks creepy. It would make more sense to have a nice marble angel representing the flight to heaven, whereas the black angel represents something more ominous.
Over the years the statue has undergone several renovations to fix its flowing fountain and to repair damage caused by vandals, and in 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Yet it still manages to generate tales of the paranormal and of nefarious curses. Is there some mysterious force surrounding this statue, and if so is it malicious in nature and why? Whatever the case may be, it has become a popular landmark in the area, and keeps its secrets close. And that seems to be the story with both of these enigmatic statues, standing there overseeing their domains of gravestones and the bodies of the dead, that it is hard to know where myth ends and any reality begins. With their unique appearances and the spooky quality of their locales, they are natural magnets for tales of the paranormal, food for ghost stories and campfire yarns, and as we try to figure them out they stand there inscrutable as always, silently surveying their land and perhaps bearing mystical forces we cannot comprehend.

“Oh,yeah.Oooh,ahhh...”
“that’s how it always starts. Then later there’s running and screaming.”
Tumblr media
This basically describes this year’s New York Comic Con experience at the Javitz Center. The annual New York City pop culture fan convention, dedicated to everything hot and trending in the world of entertainment, comics and the likes. But this year was a bit different,I knew when issues started arising in the “pre-con” activities, attendees were in for a bumpy ride and that kicked off on Thursday. Usually known as the “chill day”,”shopping day”,the day to browse around the showroom floor since it is the slowest day for the con,no big name celebrities and maybe two “must see” panels.
Well, that all changed when long time comic con goers like myself arrived, and was thrown into mass hysteria (not really, but it sounds good) when we saw the CROWDS!!!!
Tumblr media
This is light traffic (photo) compared to the other side of the convention center, you immediately had to go into your “Saturday” mindset, hence the running and screaming because now it’s do or die,if you were interested in getting your hands on those NYCC exclusives. I was totally satisfied with my experience this year, spending under $120.oo because either the line was too long to get on,the line was capped or an autograph I was going to get had to be pre-payed first (credit card) and they wasn’t taking cash. I’m sorry I don’t want to see that $200.oo on my credit card statement next month,so I can kick myself and say for a damn signature? I rather pony up with cash and keep it moving,so I had extra spending money on top of my “comic con” funds. These conventions get very expensive and if you are not careful, you can end up in some serious debt.
Tumblr media
This year Funko was messy, even a little more messier than it usually is.
Tumblr media
Fans getting screamed at if they lined up too early, don’t stand there, stand over there.Lottery time say 10:oo am,you don’t get out of the booth until 1:30pm and Funko re-sellers hustling on the opposite side of the Funko booth. Word of advise,if it’s shared just get it online or go to store,Gamestop had plenty of Funko comic con exclusives.
Tumblr media
Overall,I had a good time, plenty of laughs with friends I run into every year, positive vibes,no complaining or whining. My damn feet, back and neck hurt but nothing staying in bed and watching the SyFy channels 31 days of Halloween can’t fix.

Josh Becker interview: Thriving, surviving and doing it his way.
Here’s yet another interview from 1428 Elm except with Josh Becker. You can support the Evil Dead/Michigan Mafia alumni by giving his latest film Morning, Noon & Night a look. You can read the interview at the link above or attached below.
Josh Becker is a talented writer and director whose film school was the Super 8 shorts that he made with pals, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Scott Spiegel while growing up in Detroit. Known for quirky films like Lunatics: A Love Story and his ode to Hitchcock and film noir, Running Time, he is a maverick with a unique voice in a cookie cutter Hollywood.
Josh Becker is an independent filmmaker who honed his craft writing and directing majority of the Super 8 shorts featuring Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Rob Tapert and Scott Spiegel. Known for his candor and his innovative approach to moviemaking, he is a modern-day storyteller.
Currently, in post-production on his western, Warpath, (which coincidentally sparked a murder investigation but more on that later) we were fortunate enough that the director was able to take some time out of his busy schedule to chat with us.
So, without further ado, here is our interview.
The Interview
Birth of a Maverick
1428 Elm: When you were growing up in Detroit, did you always want to be a director? Was that what you originally set out to do?
Josh Becker:  When I was a young kid, I first wanted to be an actor.  Then, when I came to realize there was such a thing as a director, perhaps when I was 9 or 10, I switched goals.
1428 Elm: Everyone knows how Sam and Bruce met initially. How did you become a part of the group?
JB:  My family moved to Franklin in 1968 and the Raimi family moved in around the block from us a few months later.  I immediately became best friends with Ivan Raimi, Sam’s older brother, then soon became friends with the whole family.  At that point I was in 4th grade and Sam was in 3rd grade. Then, when I started junior high (now called middle school), the lockers were alphabetical and about five lockers down from me was Bruce Campbell. We became buddies and were both in the drama club and in a play together. That’s where we met Scott Spiegel.  Then, the next year, Sam started junior high and became friends with Scott and Bruce and that’s when we all started making Super-8 movies together.
1428 Elm: You cut your teeth as a director on the Super 8 shorts. What was your most memorable shoot?
JB:  The many various slapstick comedies, like: “The Blind Waiter” and “Cleveland Smith Bounty Hunter” were all fun to make, but my epic was “Stryker’s War,” which I spent $5,000 making.  That was my biggest, and most memorable Super-8.
The Lunatic Is on the Grass
1428 Elm:  Umbrella Entertainment recently released Lunatics: A Love Story. I feel this is one of your underrated gems. Very trippy. What was the inspiration for this movie? How did Bruce become involved as a producer?
JB:  The inspiration was my desperate need to make another movie and make some money.  I got the idea from listening to Pink Floyd, and when they sang, “The lunatic is on the grass,” I thought, “Hey, no one has yet used “lunatic” as a title. I then dreamed up a story to go with it and pitched it to Sam and Rob. They liked it and optioned it.  After a year of development (meaning 14 rewrites), they hired Bruce to produce the film.
1428 Elm:  Running Time is another terrific film of yours. Everyone knows about the “single take” like Hitchcock’s Rope. Tell us something that isn’t common knowledge about the film.
JB:  It’s nearly ready to come out on Blu-Ray from Synapse Films. I wrote an essay about it that’s in my book “Rushes” that explains everything.  It was shot on film so there’s a hidden cut every five minutes.  I think it turned out pretty well and I know Bruce likes it a lot.
1428 Elm: For those of us that like the 50’s style B-movie sci-fi thrillers, Alien Apocalypse is a great deal of fun. Do you remember your pitch to the SyFy Channel?
JB:  I didn’t pitch it to SyFy.  Bruce and I were working with a now long-defunct company who pitched SyFy on making any movies with Bruce, and they said “send us some scripts.”  I dug out “Alien Apocalypse” (which was 14 years old) and Bruce dug out “The Man with the Screaming Brain” (which was 16 years old) then at some point not too long later we were in Bulgaria making both films.  I never talked to SyFy at all about it.
“Everybody’s Gotta Choose Their Own Poison”
1428 Elm:  Morning, Noon & Night is getting a special showing in Royal Oak, MI on June 6. This is a darkly comedic take on addictions which relies on actually telling a story which isn’t something filmmakers do anymore. Can you see Hollywood ever getting back to doing that and where can our readers view this film?
JB:  “Morning, Noon & Night” is available right now on Amazon — and will soon be on many other platforms, too. I can’t see the future, but I can’t imagine Hollywood correcting itself any time soon.  It’s a thousand times easier to do sequels and remakes then to come up with a good story that everybody agrees on.  I think the entire Hollywood system is broken.
1428 Elm:  Let’s talk about your latest production, Warpath. Something unusual happened when you were doing pick-ups. Gerry Kissell told me about it. Can you tell our readers the story because it sounds like an incident that would be on the ID Channel?
JB:  Well, “Warpath,” which will probably be fully done by July, just had its final pick-up shoot a few days ago where we got the few missing shots we still needed.  As we were shooting in the woods not far from my house, folks in the cast and the crew kept mentioning a funky odor. Finally, someone pushed back a pile of branches and underneath was a decomposed human body. Suddenly, my set became a crime scene.  The police showed up and we all had to fill out witness reports.  Then me and the co-producer quickly found a new location, hustled everybody and everything over there and got all of the remaining shots.
1428 Elm: Wow. That’s crazy!
JB: That pile of branches is in the foreground and background of a couple of shots, so it will be in the film.
**An interesting footnote to add regarding this unfortunate turn of events, one of the cast members, Joaquin Guerrero is an active duty K-9 officer. He stepped in and took charge of the situation before local law enforcement arrived. According to the actor/officer:
“My main concern was preserving the scene and the well-being of the crew, because of the traumatic effect it may have on them afterwards.”
Riding Off into the Sunset
1428 Elm:  You have an impressive cast, horror vets Thom Matthews and Ted Raimi. The film synopsis sounds like a fresh take on The Searchers. Are you a fan of Westerns? This feels like a new subject for you to tackle.
JB:  I’ve always been a fan of westerns.  I was the film critic for True West Magazine just a few years ago. “Warpath” certainly owes something to “The Searchers,” although in this case it’s a wife out looking for her husband, with the aid of a tough bounty hunter played by Thom. I’ve always wanted to make a western and now I have.  I think it turned well, and the lead, Sasha Higgins, is terrific. Thom has aged into the perfect Marlboro man and plays it wonderfully.
1428 Elm: Do you have any upcoming projects in the pipeline? Anything you can talk about?
JB: As for the future, me and my cohorts at Panoramic Pictures — one of whom is Gary Jones, maker of such cult classics as “Mosquito” and “Spiders” — are gearing up to make my JFK script that was previously called “Head Shot” but has been retitled to “I Killed Kennedy.” It’s the account of how the assassination really came down and the professional hit men who were brought in from France by the mafia who actually did the shooting, as well as how Oswald got set up, then murdered. Th-th-that’s all, folks.
Thanks so much to Josh Becker for speaking with us. We look forward to seeing Warpath.

Hospital for the insane (part 2)
Historical tours run between March 29th to November 2nd, but make sure to book your appointment ahead of time. The hospital offers day time ghost hunts, and flashlight tours that will run you anywhere between 10 to 40 bucks, which for a 2 hour guided tour is pretty darn awesome.
Trans-Allegheny is one of those places you have to see to believe, and knowing that all the money goes towards the restoration and preservation of a National Historic Landmark is a pretty awesome too. With Halloween season just around the corner it's the perfect place to get scared in the name of preserving history! -Roadtrippers Formerly known as the Weston State Hospital, this West Virginia facility served as a sanctuary for the mentally ill in the mid-1800’s.
The history of the building holds fascinating stories of Civil War raids, a gold robbery, the "curative" effects of architecture, and the efforts of determined individuals to help better the lives of the mentally ill. Tour this nationally recognized landmark and see how it left a lasting impression on local and national history. Daily heritage tours are available for both small and large groups. The Asylum has had apparition sightings, unexplainable voices and sounds, and other paranormal activity reported in the past by guests, staff, SyFy's Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters Academy, the Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures and Paranormal Challenge. Step back in time and see how the mentally insane lived, and died, within these walls.
Thousands have been committed to the asylum over the years, and hundreds unfortunately died here. Decide for yourself if they’re still occupying the historic wards and treatment rooms. Have you been curious about the possible paranormal activity in the other buildings at the facility? Due to popular demand, we are having an investigation of the Medical Center, the Forensics and the Geriatrics Buildings. The investigation time will be divided to ensure each group has time in each of the three buildings. This hunt will last from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Ever thought about spending the night in a haunted lunatic asylum? Our Ghost Hunts last from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (excludes October hunts). After everyone is registered and divided into groups, guides will assist you in your exploration of this massive gothic asylum. After a brief paranormal tour you may either hunt alone or with our experienced ghost hunting guides. Our guides are here to ensure that you have a positive and safe evening.
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, constructed between 1858 and 1881, is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America, and is purportedly the second largest in the world, next to the Kremlin. It was designed by the renowned architect Richard Andrews following the Kirkbride plan, which called for long rambling wings arranged in a staggered formation, assuring that each of the connecting structures received an abundance of therapeutic sunlight and fresh air.
The original hospital, designed to house 250 souls, was open to patients in 1864 and reached its peak in the 1950's with 2,400 patients in overcrowded and generally poor conditions. Changes in the treatment of mental illness and the physical deterioration of the facility forced its closure in 1994 inflicting a devastating effect on the local economy, from which it has yet to recover. https://maps.roadtrippers.com/us/weston-wv/points-of-interest/trans-allegheny-lunatic-asylum-weston

How to fix Syfy activation issues in a simple way
Remember the times when you wanted to see a particular show or movie but were unable to do so since it was not carried by any cable or broadcast networks? However, these days everything you want to watch is only a click away. With the development of the internet, everything has changed. Now that you only need a high-speed internet connection and a screen to watch, watching your favorite shows will seem to take up less time and you can access them from anywhere. Simply turn on the channel on your device to get started.
Tumblr media
Simply turn on the channel on your device to get started. Thus, in this article, we'll talk about SyFy activation and frequent activation mistakes you could encounter, as well as how to fix them.
The NBCUniversal Television and Streaming division of Comcast's NBCUniversal[1] owns Syfy (originally Sci-Fi Channel, later abbreviated to Sci Fi; styled as SYFY), an American basic cable channel, through NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. The channel, which debuted on September 24, 1992, airs material that falls within the science fiction, horror, and fantasy categories. As of January 2016, 92.4 million American households had access to Syfy.
Syfy programming that you can watch on different streaming devices
Made-for-cable motion pictures, television series, and miniseries are all a part of Syfy's original programming. In order to appeal to a wider audience, the channel has expanded into general-interest content outside of the sci-fi genre while owned by NBCUniversal. These programmes have included WWE professional wrestling, WCG Ultimate Gamer, and criminal dramas (including ECW,[29] NXT, and SmackDown).
Sports and sports entertainment programming from Syfy's sibling networks has been used as backup. In an endeavour to broadcast every game on the final matchday of the Premier League soccer season across NBC Sports' "Championship Sunday" cable networks, it has taken part. Due to USA Network's coverage of the 2022 Winter Olympics, WWE Raw and NXT were televised on Syfy for two weeks in February 2022.
Resolving the Syfy activation error on your Roku device
Any user who wants to watch SyFy on their Roku devices can do so without any issues because all they need to do is activate their Roku device using the activation code that was provided when they purchased it, after which they can easily activate SyFy.com and carry on streaming through their devices. On Roku devices, you may choose any movie with ease and quickly access all of SyFy.com's episodes.
There may be problems as well, but don't worry; I've got you covered. You only need to take the actions outlined below:
The channel needs to be deleted from the Roku device first.
Go to the channel you wish to delete and select it.
On your remote, click "key."
Go to "settings," "system," and then "system restart" to restart the device.
You can get in touch with the SyFy channel's customer service to solve the problem if this doesn't work.
Resolving Syfy activation error on Firestick
Log out and reauthenticate with your current TV provider
Delete your provider's sign-in information in the app's settings. NBC, Bravo, E!, Oxygen, SYFY, USA, and Telemundo are among the apps that you should sign out of if you aren't signed in to this one. You should also sign out of your provider in another app where you are signed in.
Retry by logging into your provider with the primary address listed on the provider account in our app's settings.
Resetting and Force stopping the app
To reset
To access the Amazon Fire TV home screen, press the Home button.
After that, select Settings > My Fire TV > Restart.
You can also unplug your gadget and then plug it back in.
To force stop
To manage installed applications, go to the Home button > Settings > Applications.
Choose the NBC App, then force-quit the program.
Reopen it and try once more.
Remember the pre-requisites for your Syfy activation
You must have a TV subscription through one of the participating TV providers in order to access SYFY. Not at all! To open the channel, you will require a few conditions. See what more you might require to successfully complete the activation procedure.
An Internet connection with high speed.
A TV package from one of the participating TV providers.
A PC or a smartphone. (For the activate/activatenbcu code for syfy.com)
A SYFY account and app.
A summary of the Syfy activation step so that you know you are doing it right to avoid activation issues
Select this link. https://www.nbc.com/nbcuniversalfamily/activate
You will be sent to a website that asks you to "Enter your activation code."
To continue, select "continue" after entering.
After that, you'll have no trouble watching your preferred TV shows on all of your devices.
Fixing Syfy activation issues on Apple TV
Restarting your device
When the Apple TV status light starts blinking quickly, press and hold the Back (on a first-generation Siri Remote) or TV (on a second-generation Siri Remote) buttons simultaneously.
Wait five seconds after disconnecting Apple TV from the outlet before re-connecting it.
Restart may be found under System in the Settings menu of Apple TV.
Conclusion
Syfy indeed features a lot of unique programming that you can enjoy. However, it is necessary that you first activate the app with the help of your TV provider. If you are having trouble in activating the app, then make sure you are doing it right or you can simply restart or force stop the streaming device that you are using and then try again with your activation process.
