How to get involved in US government action between elections
Every day now on my feed I see half a dozen petitions to sign to tell our elected leaders what they want. Which is fine--but it will have limited impact on the overall outcome. Don't forget to:
- Donate money to organizations that lobby on behalf of your cause. Volunteering for them is even better.
- Call, write and email your elected representatives and tell them in as much detail as you can what you do and do not find acceptable.
This includes not only the president and your state reps, but the members of the Congressional committees responsible for drafting your legislation. For example, any change to Obamacare will require action on the part of the Health, etc. committee. Here's a list of committees, clicking on a link will provide you with a list of bills under development for you to read and who to contact. Comments have the most impact when you read the bill and tell committee members exactly which parts to keep and which parts to delete--a hundred well written letters are more effective than 10,000 signatures on a petition.
https://www.congress.gov/committees
- When Congress votes on these bills, keep track of who votes for what. Inform your friends and neighbors of the outcome, and ask them if your representatives are doing a good job supporting their interests. Call, write and email your elected representatives and tell them how you felt about their vote!
- For cabinet and other political appointees, they will directly affect the day-to-day operations of their federal agencies, but they still have to meet the requirements of the law. Again, you can support or volunteer for organizations that enforce that law via lawsuits on federal action.
You should also comment on actions that are meaningful to you. All regulations are posted in a draft and final rulemaking to regulations.gov - review the list and find the agency responsible. Check their individual websites or call/email them and ask how to be more involved in the planning and implementation process for their actions. They have a schedule for every action.
Do your part to make this country what you want it to be.

70% of grain grown in the U.S. goes to animals in factory farms, and it takes 9(!)lbs for grain to produce just 1lb of meat. 9lbs of grain could feed WAY more people than 1lb of meat. And we have so much food going to animals JUST so YOU can have a steak or chicken or whatever on your plate. What if we had less animals being fed for YOUR selfish taste in food and more hungry kids and families being fed? In our country, in other 3rd world countries? How can people claim to care.... When they're not doing anything? Sharing a picture in Facebook and creating awareness DOESNT DO ANYTHING other than upset people. Not eating meat for one day a week creates less demand which means less animals to feed and more food for starving people. AND thanks to the rising amount of vegans/ vegetarians there are tons of meat substitutes so it's like your not even skipping a day! Just try!! Promise it won't disappoint.

A petition to have Obama to place his Supreme Court nominee. The senate has wasted enough time. It's been 238 days since his nomination.

Why Bill and Melinda Gates Are So Inspiring
Why Bill and Melinda Gates Are So Inspiring
It is the very rich of the world that are able to make the most difference at the moment.
And while it is quite depressing to know that the 85 richest people in the world are as wealthy as the poorest half of the population. It is nice to know that some of the rich people have good hearts, and are doing their best to make a difference.
Bill and Melinda Gates are two of those people. They seem…

Two great ways to help people
Personally, I think the suspended coffee idea is great, but only in a perfect world. It needs a little more thought behind just paying for an extra coffee and hoping that another person comes around asking. But, Spain has a great alternative idea:
