Nor were they freed until they had agreed to pay a heavy ransom, and provide the Crown with suitable hostages. This campaign proved a grave mistake, for it only served to harden the hearts of the late queen’s men against the king. Reports soon reached King’s Landing of warriors gathering in great numbers at Winterfell, Barrowton, and White Harbor. In the riverlands, the aged and bedridden Lord Grover Tully had finally died (of apoplexy from having his house fight against the rightful king at Second Tumbleton, Mushroom says), and his grandson Elmo, now at last the Lord of Riverrun, had called the lords of the Trident to war once more, lest he suffer the same fate as Lords Rosby, Stokeworth, and Darklyn. To him gathered Benjicot Blackwood of Raventree, already a seasoned warrior at three-and-ten; his fierce young aunt, Black Aly, with three hundred bows; Lady Sabitha Frey, the merciless and grasping Lady of the Twins; Lord Hugo Vance of Wayfarer’s Rest; Lord Jorah Mallister of Seagard; Lord Roland Darry of Darry; aye, and even Humfrey Bracken, Lord of Stone Hedge, whose house had hitherto supported King Aegon’s cause.

THE END OF A THREAT

The River Market, Maidenpool, The Trident, and its Forks burned by enemy fire months ago. Since then, the Riverlands worked to gradually recuperate from such a blow, and Queen Iona Tully has sought to bring justice against the threats that came from beyond the Narrow Sea.  The River Court, oftentimes divided by old feuds and different agendas, has come together as the queen enlisted each of her advisors, councilmembers and kin to play their part in rooting out the lingering threat in the realm and to retaliate against those that viewed the land of rivers as an easy target. Soon, the Lyseni would find out how mistaken they were.

House Blackwood: As soon as the news reached Raventree Hall about the attack, men serving under the Blackwood banner were sent to aid in the relief efforts. Once again, honoring his moniker, Lucius Rivers painted the waters red as the initial hunt for the perpetrators took place. Coin from the Blackwood coffers and workers from Raventree Hall were invested in the rebuilding of the market, overseen by the Blackwood siblings and the dowager lady. // @lucius-rivers, @floatingshadow & @wyldewillow

House Tully: Queen Iona has taken the advice of her strategists within the small council and planned a coordinated attack against the head of House Rogare in Lys while also focusing on regaining safety and stability in her realm. Her siblings, Casimir and Mellara, have played their roles as soldier and advisor respectively, with Cas collaborating with Lord Commander Lysano Roote, and Mel constantly lending her ear to her sister and being brought more into the fold of the political matters in the Riverlands. // @casimirtully & @mellaratully

House Roote: Harroway, the land of the Lord Commander, has become the main garrison for the Second Sons in Westeros. Lord Lysano diligently began to rid the Riverlands of the remaining spies and merchants hailing from Lys, bringing justice to those linked to the attack, and shipping back to Lys those without charges to their name. Prince Casimir has aided him in his efforts, with the prince leading a Second Sons legion stationed in Riverrun. // @riverscommand & @casimirtully

House Bracken: As Hand of the Queen, Lord Ronan Bracken passed an emergency act with the queen's support, having the borders of the realm closed, intending to trap any Lyseni in the Riverlands for Lysano's Second Sons to capture and dictate whether these individuals would be trialed or sent back to their land. Matters went well with the Crownlands and the Westerlands, there was only some pushback from the Reach regarding the closing of borders due to the slowing of trade, but the Hand pushed for a very clear stance to all that the Riverlands had their own matters to settle first. // @ronanbrackens & @briannabrackens

House Vance: Lord Hugo Vance has played an essential role in bringing back the sense of security that was lost to the Riverlanders in the past months, especially for the common folk. Men from Wayfarer’s Rest were deployed as guards around the whole realm, patrolling the roads, and collaborating with local guards serving under other lords’ jurisdictions. These Wayfarer Sentinels have also been patrolling the River Market, Fairmarket, and other big hubs of commerce in the realm. // @hugovance

House Mooton: The Riverlands’ spymaster continued to work in the shadows, finding the right moment to make use of his web of spies and assassins. Gradually, close collaborators and allies of the Lyseni Magister began to die, a sense of dread and paranoia beginning to take hold in House Rogare. Laying in wait for the opportune moment, an assassin employed by Jalabhar infiltrated the magister’s house and murdered the Lyseni Magister in the dead of night, finally cutting off the serpent’s head. // @jalabharmooton

House Mallister: Lord Zakariya Mallister remained steadfast in his choice not to join the River Market in the aftermath of the attack, getting full support from every member of his house to remain independent in that way. Right after the assassination of the Lyseni Magister, the Mallister fleet caught the Rogares off guard, taking advantage of the chaos and lack of direction, engaging in a naval battle that lasted four days. This proved an effective show of naval power that dissuaded the Rogares from continuing their assault and forcing them to capitulate. // @zakariyamallisters, @ofsacredseas & @emiravmallister

Amid ashes, wrecked ships, and sinking corpses, the Lyseni were brought to their knees by a force they underestimated. An armistice treaty was signed soon after, with Lord Mallister signing on behalf of the Queen of the Riverlands. The treaty stated the end of all hostilities between Lys and the land of rivers, with no further retaliation of any sort.

At last, the conflict with Lys has ended.

ADDAM + HUGH

The way GRRM wrote these 2 dragonseeds, it's apparent they are meant to be contrasted against each other. With other dragonseeds, like Ulf, he exists as a sidekick to Hugh and someone who tries to take up Hugh's mantle after his death, so we don't even get much of a description of what he's truly like. Ulf's role in the story is more about having a presence as one of the betrayers so that the 2 Treasons plot can have urgency. Ulf is to Hugh what Alyn is to Addam. And because of that contrast, obviously Alyn is a character with much greater importance than Ulf. Nettles stands apart from the rest of the dragonseeds which is why her story takes a different turn at the end. With Addam and Hugh specifically though, they are narrative foils.

Small and quick as their mother, these bastards of Hull were both silver of hair and purple of eye, and soon proved to have “sea salt in their blood” as well, growing up in their grandsire’s shipyard and going to sea as ship’s boys before the age of eight.

her conversation with the lannister prince had all but ended with her picking up her skirts and darting back within the celebrations within the centre of the city square; at some point fiona had unwrapped her turquoise mask from her face, and continued to hold it proudly each time she made eye contact with her friend across the fountain. this had been the second time, and brianna found herself seated upon the fountain now, clapping sarcastically in the direction of lady grafton - and in her drunken blunder, she had not entirely realised she remained seated within a dance.

and so the couples danced around her whilst she awkwardly remained upon the fountain, there being multiple instances where she attempted to squeeze through the empty gaps to escape from the dance circle: and if anyone saw, they would have seen her attempting to time her slip through perfectly, only to miss it. what dance was this? why did it seem like a blur? her gaze briefly met with a familiar dark pair of eyes through the crowds, who had no doubt realised her blunder - of course he had.

a slight smile crossed her lips now, and just when she was going to mouth for him to help her, she suddenly lifted her skirts and simply darted through, barging straight into hugo vance and some lady he was torturing with his dancing.

it was only then she realised he was chuckling too, and a slight thought crossed her rose hued mind. he didn't look any different; she knew it was him because she had sought him out earlier to out the blackwood witch. why did he look different? still, the thought seemed to unconsciously cause her to walk over the cobbles toward him. a slight ponder, and she wondered whether she should remove his mask. "i'll have mercy on ya, ja mooton." she spoke, offering her his hand; and whilst she referred to unmasking him, she did not realise the slight mischief that tainted her words.

There was no certainty in knowing what sin began the blood feud between the neighboring houses of the Riverlands. There was never a certainty as to who struck first or who struck too hard. No one ever knew where to begin or end but every generation born carried one fact forward. They hated each other and it was a hatred that would exist until one of both houses went extinct. And Hugo Vance certain didin't wish for that to happen for their was value in both Bracken and Blackwood.

"My lord of Blackwood, if you have a moment."

Hugo had a plan in asking for men eager to see other bleed and perhaps the need could be met in other ways, ways that didn't involve more bloodshed among lords. They needed unity. They queen sat on shaky ground. He was not the hand. His duty was safety and security and that held it 's own important when securing the queen's realm. Men fought for a ruler that protected them.

The plan was simple, make a request of Bracken men to protect the road from the kneeling man inn to their lands and he would steer the Blackwoods the other way, from their stretch of river road to the Harrenhal. It would be perfect. They wouldn't cross paths and hopefully wouldn't be full of fool boys eager to kill the lifelong enemies they've never seen.

13 Book Tag Game

1) The last book I read:

The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice. I'm currently doing my annual re-read of TVC from start to finish but it's taking me longer than last time for some reason.

2) A book I recommend:

Loveless by Alice Oseman. Ik it's not the only book out there to explore asexuality and being aromantic as well, but it's the first one I personally read and I think it's a really good example of it.

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson. Predictably, it's more vampires lmao. I wasn't initially sure about how I would feel reading something in second person, but it actually works really well imo. I really love how it's told by one of Dracula's brides; I can really get into the characters, and understand her situation.

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):

So many of my books I've read several times, but one in particular is Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver. Actually just the whole Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. I grew up on them, and I've read the whole series several times over. I like that it's set six thousand years ago, because I don't think I've personally ever read anything in the fantasy kind of genre in that time period. This series has a special place in my heart.

5) A book on my TBR:

I have too many. I think one that I do really want to get to though, is Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. I've wanted to read it for a few years now, and I've had the book since last year but I haven't gotten round to it yet.

6) A book I’ve put down:

Normal People by Sally Rooney. I got it as a birthday present from someone in my family a few years ago, and when I saw what it was about it didn't sound like my kind of thing but I figured I'd give it a chance. Yeah, it wasn't doing it for me lmao. I was bored tbh and the lack of speech marks around dialogue was confusing me. Overall it just wasn't my type of thing anyway and I only got a few pages in before I put it down.

7) A book on my wish list:

I've been really wanting to get a copy of the Grimm's complete fairy tales. I know some of how a few of the fairy tales originally go, but I've been wanting to read them all properly for years now.

8) A favorite book from childhood:

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. I read this book religiously as a child. I would read it and then as soon as I was done, I'd read it again. I'm honestly not sure why, but there was clearly something about it that resonated with me, even as a kid. I actually still have the same copy I owned as a child, I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. It's very special to me.

9) A book you would give to a friend:

The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Idk what you want me to say lmao. It's LOTR, everyone should read it. I know it's a trilogy, not just one book, so I am cheating a bit here, but it's too good not to mention. It's fantasy at its finest, what can I say.

(I was gunna say Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, but that's obvious coming from me and I don't want this whole thing to be overrun with TVC lmao.)

10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own:

I won't lie, I don't actually have any of either, I've never really been interested in things like that. It's just not my thing.

11) A nonfiction book you own:

Buried by Professor Alice Roberts. I haven't actually read it yet, but it goes into looking at burials from centuries ago and how people would have lived in different periods of time, based on burial sites.

12) What are you currently reading:

The Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice. Again, this is because I'm doing my annual re-read of TVC, but it's taking me an unusually long time to get through it this time round.

13) What are you planning on reading next?:

Apart from moving onto The Tale of the Body Thief by Anne Rice, I think the next thing I want to get to is Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. I've never read it before (Ik don't shoot me), not because I didn't want to, but just because I never got round to it. But I got it recently so I'll be reading it soon!

Book(s) that you wish were more popular: Blackwood University Series by Sybil Reese (it's a Dark Romance and Reverse Harem so yeah😞), I wanna gush over Creed with somebody. He should be sole lead, then maybe book had more readers. It's weird when you have character who is cuddlier version of Zade Meadows and you try shoe horn him into harem when he is obvious choice. Technically he is her main hubby and others are more like sidepieces, hopefully it stays this way. And 2nd book is way better.

open starter / gardens at highgarden

since arriving at highgarden, willow had taken to wandering around the gardens. she never ventured too far into them but she liked following the cobbled paths close to the keep. hugo and sam were outside as well, sitting under a tree while reading their books, and she was keeping an eye on them. she preferred to know where her sons were at all times. it was control fuelled by a deep fear of losing them. in some strange way, willow believed if she knew where they were or had eyes on them, nothing terrible could happen to them. no one could hurt them. not without being assaulted by a maddened mother at least. suddenly her line of sight was blocked by a dark-haired man coming up to greet her. a knight. willow was pleasant enough in her greeting, she sent him a tight-lipped smile and made a remark about the weather, fully expecting he would move on. but then he offered her his arm to walk with her around the garden and suddenly every second he spent in her presence annoyed her.

willow blackwood was many things ― but patient was not one of them. the knight, whose name she had not bothered to ask because she did not care, was blocking her path and her way to her sons. she had lived the last thirteen years in mourning, she rarely wore anything but black, all for the purpose of avoiding situations like this. she wanted the world to see a heartbroken widow, a woman still living in the past and refusing to move on. she had strived to get rid of any suitor that had presented himself throughout the years. and in all those years willow had learned an important lesson. the faster you got rid of them, the less likely they were to stick around like bothersome flies on a warm summer day. "i am quite capable of walking on my own, ser, as you can see i have two perfectly good legs." her tone was as icy as the look on her face. "might i suggest you offer to parade another around the garden instead? ser garland perhaps?" he reacted with indignation, as they always did, and then they waited around to see shame in her eyes, but they were always left disappointed as willow simply stared them down. she felt no shame, no regret, she felt nothing but anger at him getting in her way. her anger was easy to provoke, it was always there bubbling away in her chest, eager to be unleashed. the knight left with a huff while muttering about rude ladies. she ignored him and instead her eyes immediately went to the tree her sons sat under. they were still sitting in the shade reading their books and she let out a sigh of relief.
