what are some of your favorite smg4 ships?

Alright so! Imma write these in order of most Liked to Not for me :)

☆ Smg4 x Smg3 - Obviously one of my favs! I am a sucker for Enemies -> Friends -> Lovers. Being cosmically connected and sensing changes in the other via that link? SO GOOD! I also like hurt/comfort A LOT and these two are great for that. Idk I could continue on writing but I don't wanna make this too long.

☆ Melony x Axol - My other fav ship. I mean this one is quite obvious and issa canon! I am also a sucker for slow burns so them having a slower paced love story made me very happy. Makes the whole thing more impactful. Melony is also one of my fav characters so that is a bonus ;D

☆ Meggy x Tari - Meggy at this point is a pretty solid character and her with Tari make a great dynamic. [Note: I actually thought they lived together for a lil bit.] Tari is the sweet and friendly to Meggy's passionate and combativeness nature. It's hard to explain but it just works for me. Their characters both compliment each other and they canonaclly improve each other. I really like this ship :3 (Issa very close to being a fav ngl)

☆ Smg4 x Mario & Smg3 x Mario - [Note: Mario is probably strictly attracted to spaghetti ngl XuX] Why did I bundle em up together? Well I think the poly ship of 'Star Trio' is cool. Adding a total dumbass into Smg4 x Smg3 works in my opinion (now that I think abt it this poly ship is just 3 morons, BANGER if I say so myself). Individually: Mario and Smg4 would continue havin their lil adventures and being silly together. Mario with Smg3 on the other hand would be two mischievous queers reeking havoc (Smg4 would have to probably stop em heh). [Honestly I would have to analyze these deeper but I ain't here to make a whole essay rn so uhhhh... maybe another time idk]

☆ Tari x Saiko - Well idk what to say since I am neutral on this one. I know it exists and I think the fanart looks cute! I don't mind it at all, looks sweet :)

☆ Mario x Meggy & Smg3 x Melony - Personally I don't like these ships :/ I like to think of Mario and Meggy as strictly friends/kinda-siblings. With Smg3 x Melony basing on the YT Remote arc I see em more as only friends/ kinda family vibes. These days tho (with them not interacting as much as I would hope :( Big sad) they are probably friends.

Honorable mention:

Tari x Lugi - [Important note: This would only work if Luigi was a Bi with heavy male preference, idk what his attraction is but I personally think he is more likely to be 100% gay soooo yeah!] These two are an example of 'similar people attract'. I imagine Luigi would be gardening while Tari enjoys watching the ducks swim in a nearby lake :D They have similar personalities and I think it could be very cute! Them being close friends would also work for me :) OOOO maybe something like platonic soulmates? That could be neat >:D

incoherent wednesday rant

god just NO thread in wednesday goes ANYWHERE and it’s so frustrating!!!!  like i know it was netflix’s latest lazy nonsense but my GOD lol

i was thinking this is one of those mediocre shows that would have been improved SO MUCH by having just a simple theme.  The one I was thinking would work so well with so little effort was something like “what makes a monster?” — and it almost felt like the show WANTED to go there but got caught up in its weird unearned plot twists or something?

it’s easy, and would tie so many weird threads together—gently imply that Wednesday is a monster for what she does in the beginning, even tho she’s just doing it to stick up for her brother, and then tie that into how she more and more gets caught up in her own version of events and certainty that she’s right, and actually let there be real consequences for her being wrong???  people get mad at her for using them to achieve her ends but then they stay mad for like???? a scene at most even tho wednesday doesn’t apologize or show any remorse, and it makes everything feel so unearned.

with the what makes a monster theme, the students of nevermore would be very understanding of wednesday at first bc they know what it is to be different/outcast, and gradually lose faith in wednesday as she uses them, until ultimately they recoil when she plans to torture what’s his face.  that would give that moment actual MEANING—up until that point, wednesday’s friends were like, we get it, she shows she cares in her own way, we do too, but no, this is a step too far, this is a monstrous act in our eyes.

Flip side of the coin with uhhhh plant lady?  thornhill!  the twist would be more satisfying if literally anyone cared about or trusted her or had any sort of opinion whatsoever—this could work in SO many ways; she seems genuinely kind but everyone mistrusts her, she seems genuinely kind and everyone trusts her except for wednesday, even wednesday comes to trust her, she seems overall nice but there’s just something kinda Off about her, possibilities virtually endless.  as it is the twist feels UNEARNED like everything else.

UGGGHHHHHHH AND WEEMS they almost went there with weems—she’s harsh, she’s calculating, she’s done some monstrous things, but ultimately she’s on the side of protecting the school and its students, a reveal we don’t even get to bask in for ONE GOT DAMN SECOND!!!!!!!!!  i’m so pissed her character was so underutilized lol as per usual writers accidentally made a character too cool for them and didn’t know what to do

god i cannot remember a single character’s NAME ENID okay, enid was done such a god DAMN disservice, she’s a fascinating character, she has great fodder for a personal story arc, there’s an easy tie-in to “what makes a monster” re: her getting her wolfy powers at exactly the right second (which btw, stupid—needed her to struggle more w feeling inadequate, going her own way, or preferably getting her wolfy powers at a very inconvenient time)

you know i do feel as usual a lot of this was ruined by heterosexuality lol, like they didn’t really do all that much w the love triangle and xavier feels extremely pointless, i don’t mind the twist with tyler except that i think it’s stupid he went all full serial killer at the end, i think i’d have preferred “unprocessed grief as an uncontrollable monster” metaphor but you know that’s just me.  and actually i think the show could have benefitted from playing with hinting that enid or even wednesday might actually be the monster.

also lol @ the worlds dumbest filler episode let me fix it for you—weems was in love w morticia and deeply resented gomez, weems witnessed morticia stab whatshisface and wanted to frame gomez for it, not realizing that gomez was perfectly happy to take the fall for morticia himself.  also this isn’t super related but i think it would have been neat if the reason weems and morticia fell out is bc weems once used her shapeshifting powers for nefarious reasons (nothing too bad, just trying to gently sabotage her relationship w gomez) and morticia caught her and was very hurt and betrayed.  what i’m trying to say is that episode bored me to death and justice for weems 2kforever.

12. "the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them"

twst: i had already answered this question here, but i think i can mention another character, even though i wouldn't say that kalim is that unpopular. however, i'm not a fan of how like.. usually people are just there to say something like "oh yeah he's the sunshine boi :)" and uhhhh that's it. and don't get me wrong, that's something that definitely makes him feel different from most twst characters, but i also think this might be the reason why he mostly feels like, idk, this fandom's emotional support puppy and i can't say that most people take his character seriously. i love kalim though, he's a big comfort character for me which is ironic considering how much i relate to jamil and i also just wish people could pay attention to other personality traits of his, including the less "likeable" ones, like him being kinda insensitive or even rude at times, even though he doesn't mean it. that makes him feel more realistic and relatable and not just, you know, this game's pure little angel because it may seem like he's one, but he's more than that. it's like, it's nice to have a character who obviously cares about others, but he can act a bit annoying or his personality may be a bit overwhelming, idk that's just so!! idk maybe he reminds me of myself when i was little but i think it's neat :)

bsd: .. i genuinely don't know which characters can be considered popular or unpopular in this fandom anymore tbh. sooooo i'll just use it as an excuse to talk about kyouka because hey. anime boys that are seen as attractive by most fans will always be more popular.

i love kyouka! i don't talk much about her (i don't talk much about bsd in general because even though i've been into it since 2016 if you ask me anything i will just go "i don't even remember what it's about" and i'm not even joking. what is it about) but she means a lot to me as a character since when i first got into bsd i was almost the same age as her (GOD I'M TURNING 21 THIS MONTH. I'M SO OLD) and i know, kenji exists, but i wanted a female character to relate to. as it often happens with younger characters, most people who i talked to just see kyouka as someone who's supposed to be cute and sympathetic and also atsushi's little sister figure. and i love their relationship!! it's very sweet and tbh there was a point when i didn't care about the plot that much and i just wanted to see atsushi and kyouka to become closer. i love her backstory a lot, she's a very interesting character and i remember reading about her backstory for the first time and going "😔😔😭😭😭". like it was so fun to watch her get a redemption arc, change for the better, find a place where she feels safe and where she truly belongs, find people who actually care about her, it was so heartwarming. like i will never get over her eyes gradually becoming brighter as her story went on. i love her personality too and i love how she was able to start expressing her emotions a bit better eventually. and also fun fact: when i was really into bsd, i was a huge kyouka kinnie, so there's that.

General Opinion over said character: Best character in the game. tbh. i know ive said this before and also i say it about every character. i've never listened to Friends At The Table (though it's on my list now, dnd campaigns podcast wooo!) what would the storyline of the crossover entail? with the HermitCraft characters i'm guessing it's chaotic and interesting 😊

:0!!!! :DDD!!!!!!! if u end up giving it a shot i hope u enjoy it! they dont actually play dnd, they play a bunch of other tabletop games which are all really neat also! (also if u need a suggestion for where to start if/when u get to it, feel free to drop me an ask)

the story follows the typical structure of "group is sent off to do tasks for money, and eventually realise something bigger is going on" so i am largely following the plot in that way, where groups of adventurers are sent out to investigate a series of towers that appear to have some connection to the gods of the world. ajhsjjejhfhjef most of my thoughts about the au are more character based,, so instead of a proper plot summary i can give details and thoughts on where some of the hermits fit into everything so far (while. trying to avoid the big twists revealed in the podcast ig,,?) i also ended up including some sleepybees (sbi + beeduo) in the au but im still not 100% sure on where they fit in (as in i have too many ideas djhdkndnj)

ANYWAY uhhhh some spoilers for the universe im basing this off of, under the cut cos it got long :'D

context/setting:

the specific arc/universe that this au is set in is the one from Seasons in Hieron (SiH) which is their fantasy season! (its. its long,, this arc spans i think. 3 seasons? plus a short interlude season)

the setting was previously a traditional fantasy world that had some sort of great catastrophe (the Erasure) happen, and the current world is after people have rebuilt a new society! its described as "post-fantasy, post-post-apocalyptic" its very fun and subversive and afhdjfbj the worldbuilding is just. real good :>

characters:

im still figuring out where different hermits fit into the au but i am basically taking aspects of various characters from the podcast and splitting roles and traits to hermits, so its all mixed up! also,, there are just. so many hermits,, i have not found places for all of them (not even most of them i dont think) but here is what i have so far:

impulse and zedaph work in the New Archives (a series of huge warehouse-like archives run by the orcs of this world!) impulse is an orc, zed is not! impulse works to retrieve artifacts for the archive, and zed,, hes just kinda there. learning and experimenting with pattern magic (a type of magic done by arranging and rearranging things in specific configurations, often they are obscure and weird things like "27 brown birds in a tree, 5 table legs, 500 buttons, 16 steps to the east" etc.) when the story finds them they are studying a fallen tower in the center of the Mark of the Erasure (a location still showing the effect of the great cataclysm that befell the world)

tango vaguely takes the role of Ephraim, prince of something or rather,,, idk man hes cool and has fire powers, very anime. his powers were a gift from the gods, and he goes on to hv close relations w them! he meets up with impulse and zed later on and become fast friends obviously

joe is an expert in pattern magic, and is on the run from the archives after having stolen a pretty nondescript notebook. its a nice notebook! hes just a human guy. he writes and recites poetry in order to do pattern magic using the notebook!

cleo hails from the city of *Nacre*, where people get multiple chances at life. people from there can get killed but will exist on as zombies, then if they are killed again, they exist as ghosts, and then they pass away fully. she is an undead pirate captain that joe somehow manages to sway over to their side ahjbhfbjf,, she is hunting down the lost prince/king of Nacre.

wels is a pala-din (pal-ah-deen, rather than paladin), a sort of living marble statue that serves one of the gods in the pantheon.

scar is ofc, a wizard! it. it should be noted that wizards dont really exist in this world, people who perform and study magic are mages, not wizards,, "wizard" is kind of a weird term to use sjbdbjhfjjhb scar takes place of The Great Fantasmo in the podcast, and similarly has an invisible assistant! he doesnt seem to remember much of his past...

cubfan works in Velas, a fishing town where the story "begins" he does not enjoy talking to scar, and seems to be sad whenever hes around. perhaps scar reminds him of someone, or perhaps of better times...

tfc hes a priest aagsuijdjhkdgjdkihwhjvd i swear theres a reason for this later,, the role of the npc alyosha is somewhat split between tfc and cub!

others i have thoughts on but im not settled on yet:

im debating having xisuma as part of the pantheon, but if not, he would be a druid so he can shapeshift into animals sjbakjnsnfjb he would take the general role of Fero in the story, but would also be kind of split with evil x, who captures... a certain stubbornness and deepset frustration Fero has in later times.

etho could take the place of Samol, the first god to exist. he is the embodiment of this world, and is kind of isolated and strange wbhshjhbdbhjdjbdkjn,, strange /pos. hes also. kind of dissapearing though... i wonder why :)

while theoratically i could have xisuma as samol cos. yknow. admin. i think the vibes and role just fit etho better

and... if i had etho as samol i think it could be fun to have doc and bdubs as other members of the pantheon, if u go with their dynamic from the start of s7 they even fit the divorced couple vibe two of the gods have /lh /hj (nho pantheon pog..? maybe. theres a total of 5 deities in the pantheon tho...)

im leaning toward either false + stress or maybe gem + pearl pairs for two of the goddesses in the pantheon, but thatd probably depend on if i can find a better place for them ;P

techno and phil take the role of red jack, and techno is a Huge Oni Dude >:] in canon red jack has a cool horse!!! it fits!! hes also. heavily implied to be kinda immortal?? anyway. im torn on this because techno and phil ALSO fit the roles of some of the player characters, with relation to the missing prince/king of Nacre but im still working things out,,

no matter whats up with them, ranboo takes the role of bluejay, redjacks son, meeting up with tubbo and tommy who take the place of benjamin, the son of one of the player characters. tubbo and tommy kind of. get sent to another dimension to keep them safe,,? and live in a lie for many years before they are brought back.

when i first thought about this au, i also thought about the whole. sending child off into fake dimension to live life, and of course. i thought about. grumbot ofc and originally planned to have mumbo or grian take the place of that player character abhdfvnbrvbn but it also implies one or both of them would be paladins (not pala-din! just the normal religious knight) AND have connections to tubbo and tommy which is. funny but ehhhh idk.

The data contained in these charts comes, in part, from this lovely post by @handfuloftime and this brilliant addition by @catilinas – I was inspired to make this because of a lovely message from @glorioustidalwavedefendor (thank you!) 

So, what on earth are these charts, and what do they say about AMC’s The Terror (2018)? Find out, below the cut! 

BASICALLY this chart is my way of visualizing every time the words “Name” / “Names” / “Named” (&c.) or “Call” / “Calls” / “Called” (&c.) are used in The Terror. There are two charts – on the left, the “Name” chart, on the right, the “Call” chart, both organized the same way: the rows correspond to episodes (episodes are only skipped when no variation of the relevant words appear), and the columns correspond to four “categories” referring to the object being “named” or “called.” These categories are:

Named Individuals (i.e. named in the show AND with their name known to – or immediately learned by – the character speaking.)

Unnamed Individuals (i.e. unnamed in the show – like Goodsir’s “Inuk man,” aka the historical Eenoolooapik – or unnamed with respect to the character(s) speaking, such as David Young is to Goodsir and Crozier in episode 10 – because they’ve forgotten – or as Silna is to Lt. Little in episode 3.)

I think it’s interesting that, if you remove unnamed individuals [David Young and Eenoolooapik] and non-human entities (God), Fitzjames is the only person about whom “name” is used more than once. BUT it’s Fitzjames using that word, “name,” and he does so twice in quick succession to reach that total – “My name… Even my name was made up, for my baptism.” Which makes “Myname Evenmyname” into a sort of proxy for “James Fitzjames” itself – equally artificial, like Odysseus’s moniker OuTis = NoMan. (And now, as per tate’s tags, “odysseus son of laertes snipes me with a bow and arrow” but at least I can die knowing that I, at least, have managed to mention the cretan lie.)

The other important thing to note about these charts is that they’re color-coded by who is speaking, so each character who uses “name” and/or “call” more than once gets a unique color (blue for Crozier, teal for Goodsir, purple for Fitzjames, yellow for Hickey, &c.) In the “names” chart on the left, what this shows us is that Crozier & Goodsir do most of the “naming” at the beginning and end of the show, and Fitzjames does most of it in the middle. (Crozier & Goodsir also never “name” already “named” individuals, whereas Fitzjames almost exclusively does so, and in the one instance where he “names” an undefined group, it’s because he’s lamenting that said undefined group is composed of “men” who “need names yet.” As tate said, “fitzjames is both named And called things because as much as his identity is “””deceptive”””, it doesn’t have another secret double-self, it only hides parts of itself.” Fitzjames lives in a world where things are neat and orderly and can be defined; he never once truly strays from this – though I think few of us think of him as fervently religious, the text does reinforce that Fitzjames sees the world as following a divine order: from “More than God loves them,” to “What in God’s name is happening here?” and back again to “More than God loves them,” before ending with that heartbreaking last, “God wants you to live.”)

OKAY time for the second chart aka the chart on the left aka the “calling” chart. 

This is based HEAVILY on this incredible post by @catilinas (though I did put back in the “all 12 times it is used to mean shout or summon” because I think some of those are…. shrimpteresting.)

The issue of “who gets called (both named OR summoned)” breaks down into these numbers – pulled from the second chart, starting with just people, i.e. columns 1 and [2], for now:

As tate said, “i do think there is Something going on w the fact that ‘call’ is only used multiple times this close together for a) aglooka and b) this scene [don’t ever call me francis again], and Both are wrt crozier, and both involve him Not being / not wanting to be Called by his actual name.” There IS something going on, and I propose that the missing piece is that, just like w/ “names,” Crozier & Goodsir are tied together – Goodsir is to “Harry vs. Doctor” as Crozier is to “Francis vs. Captain,” but flipped: Goodsir wants the intimacy of a first name, while Francis (initially) rejects it; but they are both stripped of their titles regardless – by the end, Goodsir insists that, “If ever I was a Doctor, I am one no longer,” and Magnus Manson says to Crozier, “Mr. Hickey says I'm not to call you ‘Captain’ any more.”

AND next we tally tate’s 8 singular “Things” (aka column 3)

The narrative backbone of this entire miniseries is the idea of what you are “called,” (Crozier) and the details are fleshed out by how you are “named” [or, perhaps, unnamed.]

Launch?

Give me a character and I will answer:

Why I like them: I think the main appeal to the character is that she doesn’t take any shit from anybody.    The blue version of Launch is pretty passive, but she also knows that anyone who messes with her for too long is going to have to deal with the blonde version.

To go a little deeper, I think there’s an enigmatic quality to Launch that draws people in.   We have no idea why she changes hair and personality when she sneezes, and we don’t know where she came from or what she was up to when she dropped out of the Dragon Ball story.   This sort of ties into something I’ve always maintained about the Vegebul ship: the main fascination lies in how much we don’t know.    The audience is left wanting answers, and has no choice but to invent those answers for themselves.   

I decided to look for information on sneezing in Japanese culture, just to see if I could find some insight into the character.    I had a hunch that there must be some figure of speech about a volatile person changing moods as often as they sneeze, or something like that.   What I found instead was the superstition about a sneeze meaning that someone must be talking about you.    I didn’t think this had anything to do with Launch, but then I found out the superstition goes a little deeper.    If you sneeze once, then someone must be saying something nice about you, but if you sneeze twice, then someone’s saying something bad about you.  

So that might be what Launch is based upon.   When she sneezes, someone must be saying something nice about her, and she becomes nice in turn.   But on the next sneeze, she turns bad, just as someone must be saying bad things about her.    Really, though, she turns the whole superstition on its ear, because of all people, no one’s ever talking about her while she sneezes.   They’re always watching her with breathless anticipation.    

Anyway, I think it’s her lack of a coherent character arc that intrigues people.   You can sort of piece something together, but nearly all of her appearances in the anime are filler scenes, so it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll be putting more thought into it than the writers. That scene where she’s working in a food truck could mean that she’s gotten her life in some kind of order, but with her, there’s really no telling.  

Why I don’t: I find the lack of hard information about Launch frustrating at times.   I feel like there’s some awesome throughline that I should be able to find that would define the character in some profound kind of way.    Mark Waid could figure it out, I bet.   I still need to read his run on Archie.   He probably did some 4D-chess character study on Coach Kleats or something that would blow my mind.    I’m sorry, this is supposed to be griping about Launch and instead I’m griping about how envious I am of Mark Waid.    Uhhhh... I dunno, maybe she shouldn’t be stealing stuff all the time.  

Favorite episode (scene if movie): I can’t think of anything better than the episode where she’s getting drunk over Tien’s death in the Saiyans Saga.   It’s a great followup to their last encounter, where she wanted him to join her in robbing banks, and he wasn’t interested.   

Death wasn’t that big a deal for TIen in the long run.   He just ascended to the next plane and trained under King Kai, just like how he trained under Kami in the year leading up to the Saiyan invasion.    But for Launch, it’s a big deal, because he’s finally gone somewhere she can’t follow.    And at last, she begins to understand why Tien isn’t interested in stealing money.   

And then... nothing.   She shows up again at the end of the Kid Buu fight, giving zero indication as to what’s happened in between.   What happened to her?   You decide, because Mark Waid costs too much money to hire, and I sure got no clue.  

Favorite season/movie: Probably the Tien Shinhan Saga by default, since her fascination with Tien is probably the biggest character development for her.   And she figures into this weird glitch between the anime and the manga.   See, the manga version of the 22nd Budokai is much shorter, so Launch never leaves the hospital after they take Yamcha there to deal with his broken leg.   You don’t even see her until the final match, where she, Bulma, and Yamcha are listening to the play-by-play on the radio.   But in the anime, the tournament is drawn out over a few days, and she watches all of Tien’s matches in person, and even attempts to murder Chiaotzu.    So it’s a weird deal, which is perfect for Launch.

Favorite line:  Probably the line where she explains what happens to her when she sneezes, since it’s the only concrete evidence that she’s aware of her double personalities.    Blonde Launch sometimes goes “awww, no!” when she feels a sneeze coming on, but that could only mean that she hates sneezing, even without knowing what it means.   But Blue Launch knows she has another self, which means the Blonde one must be aware of this as well.  

Favorite outfit:

It gets no better than the black shirt and army surplus pants.  

OTP: Tien.   There’s so little we know about Launch, so I’m inclined to hang on for dear life to the one thing we do know, which is that she’s very interested in Tien.  

Brotp: None.  Launch is a very solitary character.   She’s the wind.  

Head Canon: Not really a headcanon, but a story idea that I couldn’t really work out, but I thought it might be interesting if Launch’s Launchness was like a physical condition that could be imparted upon other people.   Like, Bulma gets it, and then she ends up alternating between robbing banks and standing around going “Oh my!”  But I wasn’t sure I wanted to reduce the original Launch to that sort of explanation.   “Oh, we know what causes this, and it’s something we can turn off.”   

This may be why I struggle to come up with story ideas for Launch, because my impulse is to try to invent some neat and tidy explanation for Why She Is Like That, but doing such a thing would force me to choose one possibility and exclude any other, potentially better ideas.   

Unpopular opinion: Toriyama forgot about her because there was really nowhere left to go with her at that point in the story.   Once DBZ started, the story became less about Goku’s friends and more about Goku’s family, and Chi-Chi basically took Launch’s spot.   She was introduced as a foil for Master Roshi, and then got a stint as Tien’s love interest, and then the series progressed to the point where Tien and Roshi were both afterthoughts, so of course Launch was going to become even more of an afterthought.  

And this is okay, because this is what happens with supporting characters.   Like I was saying, if she actually stuck around, and showed up in every “All-the-side-characters-watch-what’s-happening-on-TV” scene, I don’t think she’d be as interesting as she is with her long, mysterious disappearances.  

A wish: I hope my next attempt to write Launch goes well.

Uhhhh A Lot Of Reasons. Like. A lot. BUT I will be brief and say I like him because as a kid I always thought he looked cool and I always thought his first fight with Goku was radical. With My Big Man Brain Now I love him for just how sincere of a guy he is? And how loving and friendly and supportive? And I make fun of him for it but the wolf aesthetic genuinely is really cool- not to mention how he loves to change up his outfits and hairstyles!

Why I don’t:

I have no reason to hate this man. Like none exists. In The Most Platonic Way Ever he’s literally the perfect man and I would take him home to meet my mom and even then she would be happy with me dating a man if it was Yamcha Dragon Ball.

Like. It’s SUCH a simple line but it’s SO telling of Yamcha’s character?? Tien literally broke his leg with no concern of the long-lasting effects of doing so, not to mention his dickish behavior beforehand towards Yamcha beforehand. So for Yamcha to just be ready to forgive him at the drop of a hat when he sees Tien’s seem sincerely apologetic? Dude no one talk to me I’m going to write an essay again.

Again I Have A Lot Of Reasons BUT I love how like. Deceiving he is as a character. Like ask anyone and 90% of the time people will say Tien’s smart and serious and No Bullshit but no he is exactly the opposite he’s dumb as shit in any department outside of farming and fighting and he’s such a lil’ jackass when breathing next to Yamcha. 

Sincerely though, I absolutely love his character development- it’s one of my favorite arcs in Dragon Ball to be honest but That’s An Essay For Another Time. I also love how funny he can be, intentionally or not, and he’s surprisingly really relatable at times? And just his dedication to fighting’s really neat too; at this point he MUST know he can never be stronger than Goku but he still tries nevertheless and that’s really indicative of his bullheaded personality.

Why I don’t:

You could not pay me to dislike him I’d sell my kidneys for Tenshinhan.

yeah  of  course  i  still  rp  with  rick  blogs  (on  my  roleplay  blog)!  my  friend  val  writes  several  ricks  and  c-136  talks  with  a  few  of  them  ‘online’  sporadically  and  thinks  they’re  Neat.  rick  interactions  nourish  me  and  i  am  very  open  to  them  although  people  who  rp  him  are  few  and  far  between  to  my  knowledge.

people  who  know  rick  is  toxic  and  disapprove  of  his  actions  but  still  enjoy  him  as  a  character  are  fine  with  me!  i’m  one  of  them,  to  an  extent?

i  think  i’m  a  bad  person  to  look  to  for  much  sympathy  if  you  relate  to  or  connect  with  rick,  because ...  god.  he’s  such  a  bad  person.  he’s  an  awful,  shitty,  destructive,  abusive  person,  and  i  loathe  him  for  it!  and  i’m  right  i  think!

yes,  he’s  capable  of  being  good,  and  caring,  and  has  been  several  times  over  the  course  of  the  show.  i  acknowledge  it  often  and  the  collar  scene  with  morty,  him  shooting  mr.  jellybean  really  resonated  with  me,  for  example.  

but  for  the  most  part,  his  love  is  so  conditional,  and  feels  so  impossibly  out  of  reach  for  the  people  that  adore  him  (his  own  daughter,  summer,  morty  to  an  extent)  because  he  deliberately  makes  it  feel  that  way.  keeps  them  at  arm’s  length  with  beth,  for  example,  or  verbally  puts  them  down  and  degrades  them  instead  of  being  emotionally  vulnerable  and  conducting  himself  in  a  way  that  would  imply  he  gave  a  shit  if  they  died  in  the  case  of  morty.

he  has  zero  issue  with  grievously  traumatizing  his  grandson  and  abandoning  families  he’s  gotten  to  know  for  years,  up  and  leaving  when  the  going  gets  tough  instead  of  sticking  around  to  help  them  or  keep  trying  because  it’s  easier  for  him  not  to  bother  and  just  move  on.

tbh,  just  about  any  post  that  expresses  fondness  for  rick  or  ‘uwu-ifys’  him  with  no  criticism  at  all  makes  me  grimace.  i’m  so  repelled  by  how  he  withholds  love,  treats  everyone  around  him  poorly,  and  is  such  an  inherently  dickheaded  character  that  i  can’t  bring  myself  to  interact  much  with  people  who  are  apologetic  for  him  at  all,  because  he  hasn’t  redeemed  himself  enough  for  me  to  want  to  see  that  very  often?  if  at  all.  

i  just  think  some  people  hold  too  much  forgiveness  for  rick  in  their  hearts.  like,  you  can  demand  redemption  arcs  for  him  all  you  want,  but ...  i  think  the  sheer  volume  of  unforgivable  things  he’s  done  makes  it  so  that  sort  of  thing  will  just  never  sit  well  with  me  regardless.  

rick  hasn’t  done  anything  as  of  right  now  that  makes  him  worth  forgiving,  and  apologizing  for,  and  justifying,  and  babying.  quite  the  opposite,  in  fact.  so  i  find  it  strange  that  people  can  pluck  all  this  adoration  for  a  character  who’s  so  objectively  bad  out  of,  like,  nowhere ---  or  homing  in  on  the  bare  minimum  of  kindness  he  performs  each  season  and  building  him  up  in  their  head  to  be  largely  those  traits.  he  gets  a  mopey  scene  every  season  where  he’s  self  pitying,  and  people  twist  it  to  be  something  that  makes  him  redeemable  instead.

people  will  see  things  like  rick  flinching  away  from  beth  raising  her  fist  and  trip  over  themselves  to  escalate  the  valid  theory  of  ‘oh  my  god!  he’s  a  physical  abuse  survivor!’  to  the  far  more  vexing  ‘HE’S  BABY!  HE’S  DONE  NOTHING  WRONG  EVER  IN  HIS  LIFE!  HOW  DARE  BETH  DO  THAT  TO  HIM!’  

like,  what  the  fuck?  how  dare  beth  raise  a  hand  to  him  and  not  even  act  upon  it?  lmao? 

first  of  all,  he’d  deserve  to  have  been  actually  smacked  the  fuck  out  in  that  moment.  “how  dare  beth  do  that  to  him?”  how  dare  RICK  treat  her  poorly  for  her  entire  childhood,  neglect  her,  do  the  bare  minimum  when  it  came  to  raising  her,  waltz  back  into  her  life,  traumatize  her  son,  destroy  her  marriage,  have  the  gall  to  insult  her  parenting  capability,  manipulate  her  emotionally,  clone  her  instead  of  asking  her  to  stay  and  be  a  part  of  her  life  like  she  so  desperately  needed  to  hear:  the  list  goes  on!  second  of  all,  HE  HIT  MORTY  IN  THE  FACE,  ON  PURPOSE,  SOLELY  TO  BE  CRUEL,  AND  GAVE  HIM  A  BLACK  EYE.  it’s  called  getting  his  just  desserts,  as  far  as  i’m  concerned.

i  kind  of  went  off  a  bit  there,  sorry,  but ---  i’m  just  trying  to  exemplify  /  explain  what  sort  of  behavior  tends  to  rub  me  the  wrong  way  when  it  comes  to  people  who  enjoy  rick’s  character.

i  myself  think  he’s  very  interesting,  and  complex,  and  it’s  enjoyable  to  consume  his  arcs  and  watch  his  character  development  unfold.  he  can  be  fun,  and  it’s  definitely  intriguing  to  see  his  intelligence  at  work.  he’s  even  capable  of  being  sweet  and  wholesome,  having  fun  with  his  grandkids.  but  for  me,  his  negative  traits  are  so  glaring,  so  volatile,  that  the  positives  aren’t  something  i  can  bring  myself  to  be  invested  in  unless  he  starts  trying  to  better  himself  as  a  person.  like,  he’s  just  a  drunken  bag  of  dicks.

Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)

my hcs on this have wobbled over time but overall i imagine dan, char and miles are all like, fairly, neat. tho they all have a tendency to leave papers around

and miles doesn’t make the bed as much. cuz imagining miles napping in rumpled quilts is a very cute mental image. hair disheveled

i think a good term for whats going on with dan and char is Organized Chaos. they’re both scientists (and a musician) for heck’s sake. it doesn’t look like they know what they’re doing but they do. but ur not gonna walk into their house(s) and be like “ugh gross what the fuck”. it’s nice. dan tends to make the bed

and i imagine dan keeps The Rat Room (yes, you heard me) immaculate because you reeeeeeally want that area to be well cared for

as for personal, lets get this out of the way, none of them are yucky. but dan is showering the least, just due to absent mindedness and hyperfixation. like ya really get into a project and then suddenly oh fuck i need a shower. but thats relative. he’s not a stinky gross boy. i imagine miles washes the most because like, he has body piercings and those GOTTA be cleaned every day, especially the downstairs one. miles values his dick, he don’t want an infection

also its amazing how much more you shower/bathe when you have a partner. or in this case, two partners. in general and for sexy purposes. hell yeah

Eating habits and sample daily menu

its odd how often i’ve pictured these people eating together

dan: eats the least (and for once that isn’t a skinny joke, he could eat cake every day and he’d still be like that) because for the most part he doesn’t have much of an appetite. he eats what he needs, with random bursts of being really hungry (it’s a neurodivergent thing). i imagine he has a extra fondness for pasta and can put a surprising amount of it away when he wants to. tho typically for ease, he’ll stick to noodles. he takes his coffee mild and decaf. i hc him as a vegetarian due to not being able to process meat. his body also cannot handle alcohol and the one time he tried it he needed to be hospitalized. his ice cream preference is vanilla with chocolate sprinkles. or honeycomb. favourite vegetable is capsicum (which he’d call a bell pepper because he’s american), favourite fruit is pineapple. on that note he likes pineapple pizza. overall he eats simple but isn’t against trying new things. he has a very neutral disposition towards food

char: of the trio, i define charlotte as the Loud Passionate One so obviously being a big eater goes with that, likes a big breakfast (eggs, sausages, sometimes french toast!), sometimes skips lunch when she’s working at the museum due to focus, has a ravenous sweet tooth (i haven’t been subtle that i’ve made her ADORE chocolate but in general i see her liking sweet things), she can handle eating less tho because she’s gone on plenty of expeditions and such. so i think she eats a lot under normal circumstances because, like, she can. i don’t think i need to tell you what her ice cream or starbucks preferences are, do i? takes her coffee with three sugars, two coffees and creamy. likes mochas and hot chocolates too. with marshmallows. naturally, her fave kind of chocolate is galaxy because she is an English Woman. another fave of hers is cadbury’s creme eggs. but lest you think Good Lord Sapphire This Woman’s Entire Body Is A Sugar Molecule, don’t worry she does eat well. like veggies, fruits, meats, she’s fine. of meats, she has a fondness for fish (i have no further information, im terrible with fish. but she’s a pom, so...). favourite fruit is pear, favourite vegetable is peas. likes a bacardi, or rum and coke

dan: didn’t grow up believing in magic and such (which is super ironic because his mother is a fucking other) but he has a very open mind. i think he’ll believe it if he’s thrust into the situation. it’s interesting really, dan is known as the science guy and that's great but he’s super fucking accepting of not science shit. tho of course, he’s not seeing the island time travel as magic but science. but more importantly, he regards miles’ powers with zero doubt or questioning. he doesn’t even seem confused, he is absolutely on board with miles being able to talk to dead people. this all implies miles told him off screen and dan believes him

so basically he’ll accept whatever is presented to him as true

which honestly, is what a good scientist is like. the trope of the scientist character who is ultra non believing of the supernatural, even when they’re seeing it before their eyes, is annoying. like, you know the ones? the ones who get angry about it. the overly skeptical scientist. hate that. dan is not that

actually it’s funny. miles has magic powers but he’s 0% superstitious and i imagine outside of his own powers, he really doesn’t believe in the occult. i hc that until he personally proved otherwise, he grew up thinking he was mentally ill. and once he realised it was true, thought he was some kind of freak

and he’s incredulous when he finds out hurley has powers too. tho miles, being miles, does roll with the punches a lot in the show, he’s skeptical when it comes to hurley's power. and i find that interesting. also i fucking love how when hurley describes his power, miles says “thats not how it works”, like ???? babe???

but overall his attitude on the island is like “well. this is happening”

i do think thru his life, despite his power, he doesn’t believe in All Magic or occult or whatever. i also hc that he attracted those kind of people who are REALLY into astrology and auras and stuff like that and he found them exasperating. (i think he’d be a lot more okay with it if it was claire who was talking about astrology and palm reading with him. he’d be endeared when its her)

and i think he thinks other psychics he’s met or seen on tv are straight up bullshit. he can believe he has it but he’s skeptical of other people. just assumes they’re scammers. hell, he was a scammer. who just happened to have the power. he was like “well i have this, i may as well get some use outta it”

oh and in limboverse, they all kinda have to accept their situation. and they take it with ease due to appreciating getting happier lives

How do they express love?

a dan who loves you will pet your face and look at you like ur his entire reason to live. a char who loves you will squeak at your jokes and will never once let you feel bad about yourself. a miles who loves you is sorry he isn’t better at this stuff but he really is trying... sure we can cuddle if you wanna, that’s cool v///v

the dan and char we saw in the show was them holding back and i find that very amusing because they were HEART EYES AS FUCK for each other and so affectionate and so soft hearted, like oh my gosh. canon show dan/char is them when they’re pining... when they’re not even a couple (yet, damn it)

dan is more open about the love than char, seeing as he said it. and double downed on it. char i feel was holding back for different reasons than dan. dan was holding back (fucking barely) because of eloise’s Love Will Only Bring Pain upbringing, which’d give somebody a serious complex. so he was adverse to actually pursuing a relationship AND i figure he thought “she wouldn’t wanna be with me anyways”. but char i imagine, a deep seated insecurity and need to be defensive, but also! dan was like REALLY mentally unwell before the island. and that's the dan that char knows (and loves) but she’d feel guilty if she pursued anything with him. like she’s taking advantage of a brain damaged person

as for miles, how does he express love? Not Well. at first

whoever is the first person he fell in love with (i imagine richard), he was not good at... being open about that. i don’t think miles is good with love. lived his life pretty detached/bitter about the concept, which i imagine is due to having cynicism about life and death. everybody you love is gonna die, so why bother? (his mom dying hit him pretty hard) so uhhh its gonna be... baby steps

slowly becoming more open about liking somebody, becoming more affectionate, more... uh, couple-y (and later throuple-y). it’d take time and he will always be miles, but hey, he gets there. he’ll still always have his snark but he won’t be a Genuine Asshole to people he loves. heck, i imagine he’ll be downright soft in the right situation. and he can be gentle and kind. he’s a salty boy not a cunt

– ten  /  INSPIRATION FOR MUSE. Alus is pretty much the exact opposite of any OC I’ve ever played - I tend to make player characters that are very rowdy, vulgar, messy, brutally honest and loud, usually pugilists/monks with the personality of an overly cocky shounen protagonist with no fear or shame, always chaotic neutral types, often fun drunkards. Alus was the first time I made someone who was polite, neat, gentle and unwaveringly kind and good-aligned, and very lawful. At the time I created him in my life I was struggling a lot with ideas of traditional gender identity and frankly I’ve always liked pretty, elegant, romantic aesthetics - Once I realized I could identify as a prince in a fairy tale instead of being forced into a princess role just to have that sweet shoujo aesthetic (and reading Paros no Ken for the first time!), I decided on that aesthetic and went all-out for him to have it. But since I love underdogs, I made him a completely clueless guy who’s forever reaching for an unreachable goal (being royalty, specifically and especially an idea of a good guy fairy tale royalty, or else a perfection incarnate sparkly fairy tale knight in shining armor). I think that when a character is reaching for something that’s pretty much impossible or hopeless for them, I emotionally relate to them a lot. Alus bullshitted from the beginning that he was a hero, or a warrior of light, or a prince in shining armor there to save everybody, and after a very long journey... He pretty much is! And I think that’s extremely beautiful and heartwarming that he’s changed so much after working so hard. And his journey has been full of things that have weathered him into a more realistic idea of these things. I think seeing his foolish optimism somehow exist despite everything horrible that’s happened gives me hope for the world. A few months after creating and playing Alus, I played Undertale for the first time which very dramatically and permanently changed the way I felt morally and how I viewed the world (no joke!) so I decided from then on he’d be a pacifist, or at least an aspiring pacifist. I realized I drew a whole crap ton of inspiration from Vash the Stampede in writing him afterwards. I headcanon they have the same english voice actor too, haha.

His first ever inspiration for his personality was actually Judge Harry T. Stone from the 1980s sitcom Night Court. Talk about an obscure reference! One of Alus’ themes is also a Mel Tormé song, which is a direct reference to Harry’s obsession with the singer in the show. (FYI, if you like/can stand sitcoms with live audience laughter, Night Court is still incredibly funny imo, and really heartwarming when it deals with difficult topics - very humanitarian morality throughout.)

– twelve  / MEANING BEHIND YOUR URL. thebeauregardbros is pretty self explanatory; this was meant to be a blog to document Alus and Arc’s adventures! Arc doesn’t show up much, so it became more of a casual blog for me ‘n’ Alus. @thefakenarcissist (my art blog) is a bit of a 2edgy4me title I gave myself once I decided to start faking self-confidence until it became real, which has honestly worked for me since I made the URL! I used to be terrified of showing or holding any sort of self confidence in fear it would label me a narcissist (usually a word with a negative connotation.) It’s also a bit of a reference to my favorite Street Fighter character, Vega, who’s musical theme is called “The Masked Narcissist”. He’s definitely a bad type of narcissist though, haha! But yeah, tldr; I think it’s better to fake acting like a goofy narcissist than to not have any confidence at all and act like it’s a normal and fine thing, because it’s not! Saying mean things about yourself is an act of self-harm, and I will always believe that. Alus is the same.

So uhhhh yeah I can see why people have been reacting negatively to these cuz I’m not entirely happy with either ending :v

I’ve seen one or two people speculate that there might be more at some point that brings both routes together perhaps a Homestuck 2, even so I really hope that ends up being the case. There definitely seems to be some circumstantial simultaneity happening and the two routes interact in some ways.

But also, Hussie does seem to really be pushing the idea that ‘canon’ is irrelevant and that anyone can dictate a narrative, so I’m wondering if this is his way of really telling the fandom they can do whatever with the story now. Which is a neat idea and all, but... people like closure. Part of the reason so many people weren’t satisfied with the comic’s ending was that it was too open-ended - so many plot threads and character arcs went unfinished that it felt kinda like the story was just abandoned. Or something. But yeah, I think most of us wanted to know what actually happened rather than just thinking about the million ways things could’ve gone from there.

Then with these epilogues it’s like... ‘wow guess they didn’t really get a happy ending after all! Or did they? There might be more to the story, or maybe not. It sure is a mystery!’ Which... just kind of sucks honestly? Hmm. I just really hope we get something that really feels like a good and happy ending with closure.

I did like all the playing around with the narrative control and stuff - it was certainly interesting. But good god is Dirk a prick. I do hope he gets his ass handed to him one way or another and his megalomaniac plans thwarted, whatever they may be. I don’t trust him at all.

dudebruh, idk. the first thing in my head was ‘ace and aro friendly romance/qplatonic relationship arcs’ and ‘canon nonbinary characters’, so i guess thats a thing. ive never been particularly good at plots (hence, why all my fic is one-shot fluff...), altho i did once have an ongoing story in my head about a fallen god trying to get back to the overworld to stop the ruling goddess from destroying everything, and maybe in the process clear his name with the mortals who had hated and feared him for centuries if not millenia bc the goddess had warped the legends to reverse their roles and paint him as the callous self-centered destroyer instead of the literal author of life whose job had been to keep the record books of history so that no soul faded from eternal memory

uhhhh. shit. i mean theyve all got high and low points, and some i like more for the sandbox they gave me than for anything in canon. i like dragon age: origins and da2, but dao is tedious to replay and i feel like in order to get my ideal ending in 2 i have to trawl the wiki and plan out all my dialogue choices and party constructions for each quest before i start playing. inquisition is pretty and i liked the story i crafted with my lavellan (and also being a knight enchanter, even after the nerf its still super powerful with the right skills picked), but it doesnt really fit other ocs and the first several hours are a drag to play

ive enjoyed what ive played of andromeda so far, although it really couldve benefited from more development time and care from the parent company. i liked me1 and what ive completed of 2, though im terrible at combat, and dont often have the spoons for the level of concentration needed to pay attention to plot things (which is why i like exploration-heavy games, tbh)

fallout 4 is one of my favorites, id say. i tried new vegas, with two different characters,and just couldnt get into it. i think my biggest problem with 4 is that it kinda forces you into a specific character at certain points (ranging from having a nuclear family at the start and automatic attachment to your spouse and child, to being limited in good options in nuka world, down to the very trivial bit in the bradberton quest where you can only object to letting him live bc then you dont get cool weapons, and not bc /hes been living essentially in solitary confinement for 200 years/ and wants to rest, which i only remember so strongly bc i was going through my screenshots the other night and got grumpy about it all over again)

saints row is a series i like almost exclusively for the sandbox. my boss’ life follows maybe 10% of game canon; it might as well be an original work that just happens to have cities called stilwater and steelport and a gang known as the saints

dream daddy was cute and fun (and i Love damian and mary, and also amanda, best daughter), skyrim is my longest-running game and i enjoyed oblivion as well, starbound fulfills my need for mindless exploration and resource hoarding without the need for any plot or direction, stardew valley is adorable and lets me be a polyamorous bi nerdlord with a sweet farm...
