The costume design in Dead Boy Detectives is SO GOOD, but especially Edwin's. His clothing with all it's many many layers represents how open/exposed he is.

Most of the time he wears full edwardian whatever, with his coat over top, or sometimes without the coat when with the gang. He's typically quite reserved, not revealing much, but is a bit more comfortable when with those he knows.

In episode one, when they're still at the agency, just Edwin and Charles, he has his sleeves rolled up, only wearing his shirt, with no vest thing or bow tie. He's at his most comfortable and open with Charles. This is pre-gay awakening and he has no reason for anything to be awkward.

Later in the episode, when talking to Crystal about why they started the agency, how their deaths were covered up, etc., his tie is undone, he doesn't have his coat on, and halfway through runs a hand through his hair, also messing it up. He's being significantly more open with Crystal than he usually is.

Once he is trapped by the Cat King's bracelet, he often pulls his sleeve over it, trying to cover up the thing that is trapping him here, and pretend that everything is fine. He's trying to be less exposed.

And the smoking gun is obviously hell. He's in his undergarments. He's at his lowest, most exposed point in the series, with no control over any of his surroundings and situation. Furthermore, this is also where he finally confesses to Charles, once again, incredibly open and exposed.

This also carries to when he is more dressed. When he intends to confess to Charles, he wears a nicer outfit, trying to keep it under control.

So that was incredibly long and probably unintelligable but I really love this show and the costuming is incredible.
