Ohh so k-pop does get overwhelming at times like keeping up with all of their comebacks and activities does take a toll on the psyche 🤧 i took a small break of sorts back in 2021 just to get a breather and instead focus my energy on books :') the whole pandemic situation and the lockdown was beginning to get to me + i had to deal with an academic burnout but !! things are definitely better now.

OKAYY so it took me a lot of time to finalise a bias in nct dream and tbt all nct units unghhh i lobe them all but my nct dream bias as of now is renjun. this man has me wrapped around his finger and activates the heart eyes WDYM HE HAS A PRETTY VOICE HES AN ARTIST HE'S PRETTY HE'S SHARP TONGUED AND HE'S A TOTAL SWEETHEART LIKE HE'S SO CARING 100% BFF/BF MATERIAL :( FDIBCFBN GOD HAS HIS FAVOURITES ALRIGHT and oml don't even get me started w the yangyang and renjun interactions im still reeling from when they did this.

In 127 i have a soft spot for the vocal line lol so i usually bias whoever's in the vocal line for a particular song (DO THEY HAVE TO MAKE IT SO HARD TO CHOOSE THO). rn it's jaehyun bc I'm obsessed w his voice (it's his first few lines in good thing <33)

Oof faded in my last song just hits so hard and it hurts so bad the songs so deep. It's one of my favourite nct u songs that and baby don't like it (again. hoe anthems >>>) for 127 it's either heartbreaker (bc it's hyuck's world and we're just living in it) or good thing (bc jaehyun.) Basically love the limitless era. and for dream okayy i can't really choose but reload and boom era were both crazy good. as for wayv it's after midnight and maybee take off. Wbu what are your favourite eras/songs?

SORRY FOR REPLYING LATE I SUCK AT HUMAN INTERACTION

kpop does get overwhelming sometimes dfkjlas but also i just kind of got bored for a bit so i didnt feel motivated to check up on it in so long,, but now i just found the excitement again and i feel the same i did when getting into it for the first time its so amazing. i got into kpop just before the pandemic started, so it was something that was keeping me going during the lockdowns and shit :) i am glad you're feeling better now, though!

OUR BIASES MATCH AAAAAAA #besties fdlksaj renjun is literally the love of my life i think us two are similar in a lot of things (our zodiac signs, personalities, interests, anger issues...) so i think loving him so much helped my selflove djfkla this sounds weird but its true to some extent?? AND DONT MENTION THE CAMPING TRIP VIDEO IN FRONT OF ME ITS MY COMFORT VID AAAAA everything abt it is so wholesome,,, their little karaoke sessions, the shopping, the cooking,, them switching languages every now and then,, also yangyang singing i'm gonna love you by d.o. is stuck in my head that moment felt special.

in 127 i tend to gravitate towards mark and hyuck but i cant really count them bc theyre my dream biases as well LMAO but if i exclude them, i'd say i bias doyoung? i have a soft spot for yuta as well haha and recently my head is full of jungwoo but i'm not gonna give that too much weight just yet it might be a phase we'll see

btw re: that show line-up. all those bands are established goth bands but Gene Loves Jezebel (the main act) is specifically a big one from the 80s when gothic rock was founded. which you'd Think would mean they were the best and the highlight and etc. but hdjfghfg I ended up just buying merch for the two openers and enjoying them a bit more I won't lie.

there were only two members of Gene Loves Jezebel there, relying on pre-recorded back up tracks, which??? isn't inherently bad, I go to this club for DJs too which is basically the same concept. + this wasn't fully unexpected as the band split in half in the late 90s (which is an interesting tangent I won't delve into here lol), tho that's still 4 missing members from what this tour was supposed to include? but let me paint a picture for u. the two openers were full bands with drum sets, guitar, bass, keyboard, and vocal. they were REALLY good and energetic and everything they said between songs was fun and exciting! (one of them even had a surprise birthday cake/song for the keyboardist, who I briefly met after the show). then, before the main act went on, the stagehands removed All the equipment from stage. so it was empty except for these 2 guys, one with a bass guitar and macbook (Rizzo), and the other: Jay Aston (the singer). Rizzo was also apparently the "random" guy who was standing next to me while I was dancing to the openers next to the stage so lol.

anyway both of these guys are like twice the age of the previous bands... and dressed soooo cute I won't lie. I love tight black pants and heeled pointy shoes. Aston was kinda eccentric and not-sober. he couldn't really hit the high notes he was frequently trying to, and often left the microphone to seemingly do interpretive dance? which wasn't "good" but I enjoyed how passionate he seemed about it, even when it knocked over Rizzo's mic twice. he had kinda Tommy Wiseau vibes going on with his long hair and sunglasses. he also walked up to Rizzo pretty frequently just to stand nose-to-nose with him, often in silence between verses, which added a fun element of homoeroticism to the act. one of these times Aston smacked his own ass a bunch while doing this, so idk. he said our city/state name multiple times trying to hype us up, and then also named neighboring states for no reason, so kudos to him for studying american geography before this? (tbt to the time I saw Gorillaz live in Missouri and Damon told us how much he loved our state of "Kansas"). every time Aston introduced one of their older more-popular songs he told us he hated it. he dedicated a song to Ukraine. he made one (1) insensitive comment unprompted. he openly flirted with audience members, hornily. and lastly he said something to the effect of: his band started "before we even knew what we were doing - it wasn't called goth yet. we were just wearing dresses and make-up and having a good time" 🥺.

10/10, will probably not be listening to them again ghfjgfg

Gabi Abrao, a 24-year-old Los Angeles native, is the mind behind one of Instagram's shiniest hidden gems. SighSwoon showcases self-reflective memes and guides on how to feel things, whether it's simple pleasures or a broken heart. It’s a treasure trove of content tailored for millennials navigating creative lives. 

Sighswoon began in the summer of 2016, Abrao tells Mashable over email. Heartbreak and the desire to make some changes drove her toward the internet as a medium for creating and connecting with others, mainly through memes. With an ever-growing follower count of 62.3K, she's connected with a lot of people.

“When I share a realization online and see that thousands of people are going through the same thing, it makes me feel less alone, less hard on myself. I want people to feel this way too — understood, empowered,” Abrao explains.

"It was a mini poem I made up and attached meaning to, and sharing it like that was a reason to run around and be bad. Years later, the phrase would come back around and feel like the most fitting title for what my page has become.”

The Sighswoon feed is aesthetically pleasing, everything kissed with a tint of beige. It's light and welcoming, which is exactly the way Abrao wanted it. She blames her fascination with the hue on her time spent at the beach: “I was renting a bed and a balcony in a living room for $500/month. The building’s stucco was beige, the cheap '90s carpet was beige, and the sand was beige. I think I just wanted to match everything.”

“A good meme is funny, relatable, insightful, and healing. In that order. This busy week started off with some great filming news; Someone walked thru the set and saw Gillian Anderson reading her script...  (X) We got a video of Brick from the make-up trailer! And a picture of Brick from the same trailer.  

And then, it happened. THE PICTURE of MULDER AND SCULLY IN BED, CUDDLING!!!! According to the new BTS video... The screenshot is not the best, but we have one, at least. It is exactly what we would expect from CC. Mulder’s face is weird, Scully is completely under the sheet. Like literally not a single inch of skin can be seen. But her head is on Mulder’s shoulder and they are sharing a romantic moment. On a sofa. That’s all that we saw and of course, it went how it always goes...we had more questions than we had answers. One thing is for certain, tho. Many many people are gonna go after CC in a very violent way, in case this turns out to be another cheap trick... 😄😄😄 Anyhow, here are some theories and summaries:

Fox Mulder is standing in a church, wearing a black tuxedo!!! Other fandoms would be crazy happy, that a wedding is in sight, but here, at the X-files fandom we’ve been tortured, tricked and hurt so many times that this is us: IT IS A FUNERAL. SCULLY IS DEAD. WILLIAM IS DEAD. EVERYONE IS DEAD. So, yes. Chris Carter made sure that we are paranoid and we learnt our lesson. Believe nothing, doubt everything...and fix everything. Now a #tbt post… well not in that way but close. This is my August on my BuJo. A truly long month with so many things on it.. so here are some highlights of August.

『I haven’t gone to the gym and I have gain weight but I have found myself some confort in my BuJo and in one of the novella ideas that I had been working, follow this month long read tag I have wrote down some stuff there. It’s a macro novella with multiple characters with different backgrounds and stories.

If you recall my April and May end of the month posts, I wrote that I haven’t found my BuJo as a journal journal but I have added in the little spaces some journaling… Well, those little spaces have helped me get a better inside of myself or my thought line or annotation of things that I have been working on』

❨I have been taking care of my skin, I have bought some snail slime cream (sounds disgusting but I has helped with some stress marks) but I couldn’t but the nacre shell cream because it wasn’t available. But mom got a clearing tonic and it has helped in some how.

My overall happiness and productivity were in the highest points ever, health and sleep were okay but not at the best. Too many late nights and not much exercise can make you fall I’ll easily. Is even trying to fight off a flu that wasn’t even needed. On my wealth, I have spend a lot in things and my bank account is the victim of my own criminal spending. I have to be more careful the rest of the year. And last but not least, the overall house tidyness was excellent except for one day and that was because the big sliding door broke down and that week was windy.❩

{On my favourite to watch videos: LOOΠΔ TV, The Resistance (after a needed break for me, I was getting a little bit paranoic) and some videos on Tiny Housing and Living (proof point the “header doodle” of the month.

Two good reads of this month were the amazing @therootnews Clarkisha Kerit’s op-ed about the white woman privilege story centered in TS and KKW (you guys should get how are these two) and my research for my 七夕节 for my Chinese midterm oral exam. They had such a sad story (and I didn’t had some one to watch them reunite on the sky).

The things that I loved in August were 2: I have bought an new bra and body suit and I have finally felt some comfort wearing thigh clothing and etc. Every girl needs some soport and a good bra can do that easily.

My favourite thing to listen on April was the Podcast Roaster that I have since April with some additions: Larry Wilmore’s Black on Air and Black Men Can’t Jump In Hollywood (a very punny title)!!!}

It was the fall of 1998. Guy Fieri was preparing to open his second Johnny Garlic’s Restaurant, while his clone-twin, Steve Harwell, was in the studio with his bandmates wrapping up their sophomore album, “Astro Lounge.” Beyond the studio walls, military tensions were rising in North Korea, Pakistan, and Iraq, and a little company called Google had just opened up in Silicon Valley; but all anyone cared about were Bill Clinton’s blowjobs.

Smash Mouth had carefully curated the sonic landscape of their first hit single, “Walkin’ on the Sun,” to use as a musical weapon to avert the coming damages that would soon be caused by nuclear apocalypse and climate change. The dopeass organ riff was specifically designed to vibrate on a frequency that would deliver a message of peace, hope, and sustainability directly into the prefrontal cortex of anyone who heard it. Even the title of the song itself was a direct nod to threats of rising global temperatures largely caused by carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. Yet somehow, it failed to stop the dystopian vision of the future they had seen that one time after communing with too much California weed.

The members of Smash Mouth knew they had an obligation, as all pop-ska-rock groups do, to deliver a totally sick jam that would also save the world from its own impending doom.

And thus was born “All Star.”

 Unfortunately, we were all too stupid to figure out the idyllic message hidden in its rhythms. Something did resonate about the song, however. That cleverly diminished chord in the chorus took root in our heads and found new life as a sonic meme, a viral idea that would spread from person to person and perpetuate its own existence.

Rather than heeding the foreboding prophecy that Hartwell and his bandmate, songwriter-guitarist Greg Camp, laid out for us in that little earworm, we just used it to make “Smashups” and other esoteric Internet jokes.

We should have listened more closely.

Like Moses parting waters with the tablets of the Ten Commandments, the truth was revealed in a tweeted photo of the original handwritten lyrics:

As you can see, the last line of the chorus was originally different. Perhaps if Smash Mouth had left that line “Wave bye-bye to your soul” intact, rather than replacing it with “Only shooting stars break the mouooohuould,” then perhaps we could understood the truth sooner, and avoided the predicaments of our current political climate, just as they had intended.

When you look at the song line-by-line in this new context, it all makes sense.

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed

From the very opening of the song, Steve Harwell invokes the imagery of some kind of higher power, and a greater global purpose — and the fact that humans are a bunch of fucking idiots by contrast. He cleverly plays on the idea of the “world” and “rolling me” to allude back to the days when people thought the world was flat, and how they mocked and ridiculed the scientists who tried to tell them otherwise.

She was looking kind of dumb with her finger & her thumb in the shape of an “L” on her forehead.

In every verse, the narrator stands in for humanity at large, and this case, humanity is largely a bunch of uneducated manual laborers who think that Galileo is the stupid one, standing there making the classic “loser” sign of the 90s. Except…what if he was actually measuring right angles, attempting to use the physical science to better understand the world?

But no; these anti-intellectual raptors go so far as to mock his masculinity, swapping out his gender pronouns like a trollish Twitter egg. “LOL what kinda loser believes in science?” they say with their French frog cartoon faces, willfully ignorant to the measurable truths of the natural world, and all of the potential it contains.

Well the years start coming and they don’t stop coming Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running

This couplet is revealed as a critique of the US education system, and how for-profit agendas collude with Creationist beliefs through misleading text books that spread mass disinformation across the generations. From an early age, children are told not to break the mold, but instead to fall in line and maintain some preconceived sense of “order” that follows them from school into adulthood, when they start to scold the individuals and revolutionaries for not breaking rules in the “right” way.

This also alludes to the passage of time on a grander scale, and how the anti-intellectualism and stubborn war between science and religion would repeat themselves in endless cycles, even as mankind continues to grow and evolve. Rather than look back and learn from our past mistakes, humanity is encouraged to hit the ground running, and never to question anything—including the fact that we’ve dealt with all these same conflicts before.

Didn’t make sense not to live for fun Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

This is where Smash Mouth predicts the rise of “snowflake” as a pejorative. Imagine Galileo’s anti-intellectual haters mocking his gender while they chant, “Can’t you take a joke?”

So much to do, so much to see So what’s wrong with taking the back streets?

Now we start getting into issues of carbon emissions and sustainability. Our narrator-as-stand-in-for-humanity is clearly coming from a position of privilege, with no concern about temporal or financial obligations—or the damages that his gas-guzzling joyride does to the planet. It’s generally accepted among climate scientists and activists that ecological catastrophe will have a disproportionate impact on marginalized groups, since the rich and powerful can always afford to shield themselves from the brunt of it in their ivory towers.

You’ll never know if you don’t go You’ll never shine if you don’t glow

These words are sung from the point-of-view of climate deniers, who seem to think that unless they, personally, can recognize the precise moment that a 2°C temperature change occurs, then there’s nothing to worry about. Worse, they think that something bad will happen if people stopped using carbon-based energy and greenhouse gases. Until the day that people start literally glowing in the aftermath of nuclear fallout, they’re not going to see a problem or care to prevent the seemingly inevitable.

Hey now, you’re an all-star, get your game on, go play Hey now, you’re a rock star, get the show on, get paid

And all that glitters is gold

In true punk rock style, Smash Mouth invokes the anarchistic belief that Capitalism is a disease, and that overly-toxic economic competition is an impediment to peace and progress. It’s all about games and money.

The use of “gold” can also be read as a reference to oil as “liquid goal,” and the ways in which oil industry profits have steered most of the social, political, and technological progress of the last century, particularly in the form of Koch-sponsored legislation.

Wave bye-bye to your soul

This should be pretty self-explanatory.

It’s a cool place and they say it gets colder You’re bundled up now, wait till you get older

Yet another direct jab at climate deniers who insist that the continued existence of winter and/or snow supports their belief that “the climate is always changing.”

The second part of this couplet plays on a double-entendre: it can be interpreted as the condescending voice of an older generation basking in their ignorance and the dismissive of when-I-was-your-age attitudes that reinforce the aforementioned rule establishment brainwashing of the for-profit school system; or, it’s yet-another intentionally ironic allusion to rising global temperatures, the idea being that there will be little need for us to bundle up by the time that 2099 comes around because we’ll all be dead from freak storms, flooding, or mosquito-borne illnesses.

But the meteor men beg to differ Judging by the hole in the satellite picture.

Despite the fact that it was written 20 years ago, this is another example of how “All Star” predicted our current circumstances in which media, expertise, and evidence are no longer trusted.

This also alludes to the idea that “weather” and “climate” are two separate things — a distinction that continues to elude people—as well as the notion that scientific prediction is not 100% reliable. Climate scientists in particular use the available information to form models and calculations, and while the specifics have been incorrect at times, the larger idea that the climate is changing in disastrous ways still shines through. Climate Critics will always miss the forest for the trees, at least until naturally-occurring brush fires wipe out all the forests.

The ice we skate is getting pretty thin The water’s getting warm so you might as well swim

Crumbling ice floes. Rising global temperatures. Rising water levels, caused by that melting ice. The struggle is real, my friends.

 That’s right: by predicting our fiery doom, Smash Mouth also inspired the popular “This is fine” meme. This is an historical fact.

Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas? I need to get myself away from this place.

Income inequality has grown drastically in the 20 years since “All Star” first graced the airwaves—and Smash Mouth saw this coming, too, as evidenced in this vignette of a poverty-stricken person forced to beg for change in order to afford gasoline, despite knowing that their own contributions of carbon emissions will get them away from this place, that is, bring on their impending death.

I said yep, what a concept I could use a little fuel myself And we could all use a little change

This was clearly intended as an ironic juxtaposition, urging us to make a change from our fossil fuel-based energy system to one of more sustainable production—particularly if we are going to continue taking the back streets (once again, a double entendre both for gas-guzzling fuel waste, and the hope that we could extend human life using biotech advancements that now collide with the ecological damage that threatens to shorten our lives.

And then we return to begin, as we’re once again reminded that the years start coming and they don’t stop coming—because Smash Mouth the future was inevitable, unless we did something about it.

But all we did was make a bunch of stupid Smash Mouth memes, ignoring the clear warnings they placed before our ears.

It’s why the songs ends on that ringing chord, Steve Harwell’s warbling vocals fading off like the dying echo of our not-so-distant future. It’s why the song has persisted as a meme: because somewhere in the deepest, darkest recesses of our subconscious minds, we understood what Smash Mouth was trying to tell us.

“All Star” resonates with something primal and shared by all of mankind—but sadly, it was not a truth that we would find within until it was too late.

“Wave Bye-Bye to your soul” indeed.

TBT: Macklemore after “White Privilege”

It could’ve gone wrong, but it went right and was done well. If not well, then at least carefully. Macklemore’s new track, “White Privilege II,” hits a fine line of trying too hard, but it doesn’t cross that line. His silence since the song’s release last year is dis-concerning, and takes away from the message he tried so hard to conjure. 

The track serves as a sequel to Macklemore’s 2005 “White Privilege.” This prequel takes a much narrower stance on racism in hip-hop, focusing on Macklemore’s role as a white guy in the genre, and what his presence does to the authenticity of rap.

While in “White Privilege II” some of the internalized battle and the role of whites in hip-hop occurring in “White Privilege” carries over, Macklemore takes the police brutality shot into mainstream media in the past 10 years to revisit this topic with a wider lens with an array of voices.

The emergence of the Twitter-fueled movement #BlackLivesMatter, however, has shifted the context of this privilege. As seen on the track’s webpage, it’s clear that Macklemore did what he could to understand the opposing point-of-view.

Macklemore went out of his way to make sure the track was not only a reflection of his personal feelings, as he did in 2005′s “White Privilege,” but that “White Privilege II” reflected voices leading the BLM movement. Through this, Macklemore diminishes as much as possible his role as a white martyr for the movement.

Contributor and collaborator Nikkita Oliver makes painfully clear, however, that “most white people will not listen to me when I speak about my experience and white supremacy. Macklemore has a platform in the ear buds of white youth all over the United States. They likely will not hear me, but they will listen to Ben’s music.”

Although she had hesitations about working with Macklemore, she sees the advantage of the rapper’s platform and how he projects to white audiences. “I hope that this song moves white allies to have conversations with other white people about white supremacy,” she said, “why black lives matter and why it is important to hear and follow the voices of those most marginalized and oppressed by the system.”

Macklemore stays true to this goal throughout the song, refusing to apologize to those who utter cringe-worthy statements about how the duo is the only hip-hop artist their kids listen to due to his positive themes.

In the 2005 track, Macklemore notes that the differences in themes are due to different childhoods, and growing up in different environments.

- “White Privilege” (2005)

The white voices in “White Privilege II” sound like caricatures, and their statements are full of broken logic and defensive statements riddled with I’s and me’s.

When it comes to the folks explaining why in fact black lives matter, it’s poetic and beautiful, metaphors painting vivid pictures of parallel scenarios. Speakers don’t talk about themselves but a community, and expressing that seemingly singular incidents are part of a bigger picture.

As one speaker roughly quoting Martin Luther King, Jr. states: “Injustice anywhere is still injustice everywhere.” This statement counters one of the white speaker, who said: “99% of the time, across this country, the police are doing their job properly.”  

Initially, I was hesitant when I saw this release from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Their sweeping of the Grammys in 2014 throughout all rap categories against far superior and important releases from Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, and Drake was a clear illustration of Macklemore and Lewis’ advantage.

However, those four Grammy win makes this track and Macklemore’s personal inflictions more potent, since he is one of the white men highly benefitting from white privilege. Instead of letting it slide, he takes advantage of his heavily white and misinformed audience and challenges their opinions.

As the female speaker in the voices defending Black Lives Matter states,

The best thing white people can do is talk to each other, having those very difficult, very painful conversations with your parents, with your family members.

I think one of the critical questions for white people in this society is, “What are you willing to risk? What are you willing to sacrifice to create a more just society?”

Macklemore’s attempt to begin a conversation with his fans, and all the mothers who only let their kid listen to him. He risked sacrificing his credibility with both the white and black community with this release, but it’s a risk that paid off: not only for Macklemore, but for greater understanding and the fight against racism. Over a year later, we haven’t heard more than this overinflated peep.
