Another thing that I appreciate about TFA StarOp is the sheer comedic potential of it all. Yes from the Autobot “you’re dating WHO” side, but also from a Decepticon perspective. Like, you have Air Commander Starscream, who is considered to be one of, if not the most attractive flyer in the entire Armada. He’s like the pinnacle of Seeker aesthetics, huge wings and all that, and you hear that he’s apparently found himself someone. Oh, you think, damn, wonder who the lucky guy is, only for the news to be broken that it’s this random, tiny-ass red and blue spacebridge repair crew Autobot, in other words, just some guy. And there he is, with his arm wrapped around your Air Commander’s waist because that’s how fucking short he is. What the fuck.

what do you think of the homoeroticism between felix’s dad and dimitri’s dad? like, Rodrigue is obssessed with Lambert to the point he neglects his own living son to parent this dead dude’s child as his own. it’s like how Gilbert was also obsessed with Lambert but even more and I feel like it goes beyond normal King/Shield behavior and that every man in farghus is hopelessly gay but what do you think?
Funny that you should mention them, because just the other day I came across some Rodrigue/Lambert porn on AO3 and was momentarily baffled by its existence until I realized that, yeah, it’s not that surprising at all. It’s a type of relationship subtext FE has explored before; Elihec is much the same in its later years, and Genealogy’s Gen 1 lord trio - the group whose school days inspired the basic premise of Three Houses, at that - carries hints of it as well.
I’ve brought it up before when discussing the route, but Faerghus and Azure Moon are so heavily gendered in a way that feels like it’s deliberately picked up a bunch of disparate threads of male intimacy in wartime that the series has played with previously and woven them together into a narrative that is unmistakably homoerotic, both for good and for ill:
Dimidue, Dimilix, and Sylvix all reflect the martial culture in which these men bond with each other, whether it’s cherishing battle scars or making vows to die together or coping (or not) with trauma born of violent military action. Dedue/Ashe is the odd one out, as both characters are on the outside looking in at Faerghus’s cult of knighthood.
As you said, Rodrigue and Gilbert go above and beyond in their devotion to Lambert and his son to the point of neglecting their own families. In Rodrigue’s case - and later, Felix’s - their intimacy explicitly belongs to a tradition enshrined in the near-mythical bond between Loog and Kyphon.
Dedue specifically represents a partial subversion of the status quo right from the beginning, as he replaces Felix as Dimitri’s shield and retainer figure on account of the tragedy of Duscur throwing everyone and everything in the Kingdom off. I would also argue that the Dimidue ending is the most transgressive of the four Lions M/M endings, with Dimitri taking no queen and instead having Dedue as his consort in everything but name. Fandom has been quick to establish that fanon!Fódlan has marriage equality for every popular pairing, so it can be easy to forget that very few of the same-sex paired endings imply, much less state outright, anything as close to a publicly-acknowledged union as this one.
Annette and Ingrid represent two different viewpoints on how women are damaged by all this furtive male bonding running side by side with standard heteronormative patriarchy. Annette’s father cares more about his duty to his king - and might possibly be a heavily repressed gay (but see below) man himself - than his duty to his family, while Ingrid struggles to reconcile her dreams of breaking into the male-dominated world of knighthood with her duty to marry as imposed on her by her father. Sylvain meanwhile takes his resentment of the Crest system out on the many women he pursues, in a take on compulsory heterosexuality that’s pretty hard to take sympathetically.
It would not be unreasonable to headcanon that Faerghus’s culture not only condones but encourages romantic and possibly sexual relationships between noblemen provided they also marry to pass down their Crests. That’s why I left a note on calling Gilbert gay above - standard sexuality labels don’t work very well for a culture like that, which is neither strictly heteronormative (for men, at least) nor fully egalitarian. We have very little idea how much of this would impact commoners, removed as they are from both the institutions of knighthood and personal vassalage and from the need to make Crest babies. We also don’t know if Faerghus is more or less accepting of female homosexuality than Adrestia where it’s apparently the norm; Annette/Mercedes, like everything else involving Mercedes who is herself not from Faerghus, feels removed from the Kingdom’s culture. I sometimes wonder actually if Mercedes was an Eagles character when first designed and was only moved to the Lions when the developers realized that A) a sincerely pious Adrestian such as Mercedes would absolutely not ally with Edelgard by default, B) the Lions needed a primary healer and/or another woman, or C) both.
I’ve seen some of my Tumblr mutuals remark that they sometimes feel like other fans played a completely different game from them, usually in regard to Edelgard. I’m of a similar mind with the Lions and how outside my own circle and a few other little corners of the internet the most common consensus is that Dimitri is a straight guy healed by f!Byleth’s loving hand, the Lions is the house with all the bromance, and Azure Moon’s biggest missteps are ignoring the Agarthans and Rhea (and also presenting Edelgard at her most supervillain-y, for her fans). Well, I would be, but then the game does such a good job of anticipating the way some players as well as the in-game historical record will glide over the subtext that it’s easy to dismiss it when Byleth’s romantic same-sex S ranks exist.
Tl;dr, do I think every man in Faerghus is gay? I wouldn’t go that far, but I think it’s not a big deal for Faerghus noblemen so long as they take time out from plowing/getting plowed by their buddies to make a Crest baby or two. The obsession with passing down Crests is something that’s lessened by gradual reforms in the AM endings, so presumably things just get even more openly gay from then on - especially if the king is publicly getting in on the action.

On Hillary...
Tumblr media
It seems to me that one of the most obvious statements of the 21st Century is that Hillary Rodham Clinton is a divisive figure. But to unpick this divisiveness raises many questions, and cracks open the tides of contradictions that swell within the Hillary discourse. Nanette Burstein’s new four-part documentary Hillary (available on Sky in the UK) goes a long way to capture what makes HRC such a compelling figure, someone who seems to be at once ‘ahead of her time’ and behind the times. The documentary is structured in a way that offers glimpses of her 2016 presidential campaign woven through a chronological telling of her early years; Bill Clintons’ gubernatorial and presidential campaigns; her role as First Lady; her tenures as senator for New York and Secretary of State; and, her ultimately unsuccessful presidential campaign.
I really should say that I have long been a fan of Hillary. I’m not objective (who is?). I find her inspiring, funny, charming, endearing, and yes, likeable. I know these statements alone will raise the ire of many, and perhaps justifiably so. Hillary, like many politicians, straddles a very tricky chasm – one’s personality and persona as a living feeling person, and their role(s) in global political decisions which adversely impact many people. Part of what makes Hillary such a complicated figure to explore is the way her life is a metaphor for so much. She is so many things to so many people: feminist hero, political maverick, betrayed wife, knowing accomplice, hard-nosed career woman, corrupt career politician, dedicated public servant, and the list goes on. The point I find interesting, that I really want to capture, and that Burstein’s film settles into is the fraught relationship between Hillarys’ role in history and her role in the present.
Tumblr media
The ways in which we can observe generational, social, and historical changes through the stages of Hillary’s life (as well as observe how Hillary herself played an instrumental role in shaping American consensus, and dissent, on many of these very topics) reveals much of what makes Hillary’s legacy so complex. Hillary is in the unique position of being both one of the many women who lived these changes, as well as having the public notoriety and fame to be a ‘historical context map’ for these changes. Her persistence to not exist in history makes her very difficult to grapple with. We are used to exceptional woman who shaped history, remaining just that – figures in history. We are less accustomed to these women continuing to live their compelling lives publicly and presently, and with little regard for their detractors. It is often easier to view problematic figures more favourably in retrospect, one wonders if the temptations to view them more harshly in present tense is also true? Maybe not, but it’s an interesting thought in Hillary’s case. Whether said outright or not, I think a reason behind much of the venom directed at Hillary is a response to the ingrained, implicit bias we (read western, specifically American) as a culture have for women who demand to be heard, and not only that, but women who have the audacity to want to lead – to desire to build, shape, and remake the very apparatus through which voices are heard and decisions are made.
As Burstein’s documentary shows, Hillary did forge paths (alongside a sea of exceptional women). However, the course of Hillary’s life pushed her to the front line in terms of exposure. I am not blaming internet culture, social media, and advances in technology and news media for the problems Hillary faces. But I do think there is something to be said for the inadequate ways in which we can incorporate the past of someone’s life into their present endeavours. Burstein captures so clearly this tricky paradigm – Hillary spent the better part of two decades navigating attacks that painted her as ruthlessly politically liberal and radically feminist (effigies of her were burnt), to then have to spend the most recent tenure of public life proving herself as liberal enough, feminist enough. As the final episode suggests in its title “Be our champion, Go away”, Hillary faces a unique problem (possibly created through such a protracted time in the public eye, and a determination to continue to rise higher): she doesn’t fit well in the current media discourse. The vastness, and notoriousness, of her history seems too unwieldy to be handled in a consumable way that allows her to not just represent the past but also play a role in the future.
Burstein’s documentary highlighted another specific problem Hillary faces – the perception of herself as false, scripted and performed. For instance, at their rallies both Bernie Sanders and Trump scream, shout, their voices course and determined. The documentary, nor Hillary make this defence, but it is clear through so many micro-aggressions and misogynistic rebukes that Hillary (like so many female leaders) is not permitted the same performance of anger and frustration as her male political counterparts. Hillary has to moderate her performance in ways others simply don’t. It seems the consequence of this male/female double standard is the view of Hillary as false. Hillary’s own team highlight her apparent ‘lack’ with public speaking. Hillary herself remarks that her relationship with the press and public was inevitably worn down as a result of years of media controversies.[1] Her awareness that she will be attacked for a raised voice or spontaneously chosen word cannot not have an impact of her public performance, and as such its reception by the audience. In a scene from the documentary one of Clintons aides describes how one of Hillary’s biggest strengths is also her biggest weakness. He uses her vast knowledge of policy as both a pro and a con. He gives the example of healthcare. During debates when Bernie and Hillary are asked about healthcare, Bernie’s response may be ‘free for all” and “universal”, whereas Hillary’s response may be a twenty-sentence-long description of her healthcare policy that she knows inside and out. A policy formed with the knowledge of how difficult it is to pass legislation. But this doesn’t read as well.
Tumblr media
This brings us to one of Hilary’s biggest problems, her pragmaticism. This pragmaticism is also noted when a young woman attending a rally asks Hillary if elected president would she ban fracking. Hillary replies ‘No I would not do that. A president can’t just ban fracking, that’s not how our system works”. These moments typify a problem with Hillary. In the current media landscape, adoration for leaders not always based on articulated policy comes a misunderstanding of how certain legislative systems work (which is not a defence of these systems). One could argue there isn’t much difference between Bernie Sanders blanket commitments to bans, and Donald Trump’s executive orders. Yes, their intentions, and ideological views, are entirely different, but the ideal that any political leader is the fixer of all is shared, it seems, by both the right and the left.  In 2020, and indeed 2016, Hillary’s pragmaticism was never a positive.  I am trying hard not to make this a Hillary vs Bernie debate. I’m not a fan of Bernie (and that’s fine), I think his 2016 and 2020 campaigns did a great deal of damage[2], not just to Hilary’s chances of beating Trump after she secured the democratic nomination, but also to political discourse in general. But that is a debate for another time.
Tumblr media
I think Hillary will be a difficult watch for people who feel they are aware of her political leanings and regard her as a war-monger, bought-and-paid-for corrupt politician and Wall Street conduit.  The documentary does defend some of these charges, but it doesn’t fully engage with Clinton’s political choices, especially on foreign policy and her tenure as Secretary of State under President Obama’s administration. Hillary’s ideologies, while not uncommon in the American political landscape, are observed with a different rigour, and tone, compared to her male counterparts (Obama, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden etc). Hillary, according to media discourse and online opinion is something of a war hawk[3]. Burstein’s documentary doesn’t spar with Clinton’s policy stances. It doesn’t explore her ideological viewpoints. It is focussed on her as a woman. It wants to paint as comprehensive a picture of Hillary as a woman, and how her life fits within a series of social and political changes throughout her more than three-decade role in public life, as possible. It of course goes without saying that politicians cannot be excused of their harmful decisions based on the fact we like them alone. I accept Hillary is a problematic figure. I also accept I am no expert. I have little comprehension of the global political challenges that underpin many political and military decisions. It is worth pointing out, not as a defence of Hillary per se, but rather as added context regarding the way gender is embedded in supposedly straightforward profiles, that decisions taken by President Obama are often laid at Clinton’s feet. The men who have supposed ‘good’ public images, like Obama, face less scrutiny than Hillary.[4] This brings us to a key point visited upon in Burstein’s documentary Hillary, and a woman’s, apparent need to defend, be complicit in, and take undue responsibility for, the actions of men.
The baggage of Bill Clinton’s affairs is never far from discourse on Hillary. Burstein’s documentary explores this and offers some critical insight into the ways in which women are exploited in media discussion in ways men are not. The requirements are different. This leaves Hillary in a difficult situation – on one hand she is at times defined by the men in her life (the media and public demanding her response and rationale), and on the other the actions of men are used against her, or as representative of her. It is a lose/lose double standard.
Tumblr media
I suppose the root of Hillary’s issues is that she has lived life so publicly and with such a period of time that she has gone from being a scary liberal, to a right-of-centre moderate, without her views necessarily changing that much. Her pragmatic approach may not have changed, but the contexts surrounding it undoubtedly has. I’m unaware of many other western political figures who have enjoyed (although Hillary may choose a different word) such a duration of not only public notoriety, but also political influence, and power. There is such a gulf between who many see Hillary as (split into vociferous ‘for’ and ‘against’ camps) and who Hillary sees herself as. Ultimately, I think these conflicting ideas of Hilary are so firmly built that many won’t go near this documentary. I suspect it won’t persuade Hillary detractors, and it certainly won’t dissuade Hillary fans. It may, however, provide extra context for this compelling and clearly trailblazing figure. It might remind many, or indeed show for the first time, the remarkable achievements HRC made (and continues to make) throughout a lifetime of work. Even if it doesn’t provide enlightenment, it could calm the choppy waters surrounding the brand of Hillary Rodham Clinton, allowing for a brief moment an acknowledgement of her and towering achievements, and the determination and resilience that accompany them.

The funny thing is...I've been waiting to send you asks! So, first of all, I ADORE your characterization of 2Doc. It may very well be my favorite, in fact. You describe your version as "harsher." I understand why, but are there any "softer" characterizations you enjoy? As in, what is your standard of "softness" for the lads? Do you enjoy any "soft" portrayals of 2Doc in the fandom? Do you enjoy any other characterizations besides your own?
First and foremost, thank you so much for saying that! That truly means a lot to me. I know maybe that just sounds like a thing people say, like “I appreciate your support,” but it really does mean more than you realize. Writing can occupy a weird space in fandom, especially this one, and it’s easy to feel sort of isolated. I can be a defeatist and I’ve never really considered myself A Writer, I just… have written things. I feel like you need to be better at it and do it with more frequency to be A Writer, haha. So to hear things like that is a real kindness. I do say my content is harsher, and I say that to express that I understand why people may not like and may not engage with it. I get it! But conversely, it’s simply true that people want to feel like they have an audience and there is a point to making content aside from just… the personal spectacle of it. Like, if it’s gonna be a spectacle, make it entertaining! So that bolsters me, sincerely, it does. (And please feel free to send me asks if you’d like! I also just don’t get a lot of asks for those same reasons, the content being kinda unlikable and me being rather sporadic in posts and hey, I get it– but it’s always nice.)
Sorry that I’m sort of answering these out of order, but I’ve got to pay dues right away to the last bit: “Do you enjoy any other characterizations besides your own?” Absolutely! My version of 2Doc is not my favorite 2Doc, and I’d barely call it mine! From the start my characterization has been lovingly ripped off from @elapsed-spiral, specifically their entire-Gorillaz-canon-spanning fic Yearz. When I got into the fandom as a relative newcomer, Yearz was only a few chapters in. I was not entirely on board shipping 2Doc at the time because I hadn’t really been sucked in by any of the shorter fics I’d read, which tended to depict Stu a bit wet and hard to get much of a grip on. I really had an itch in me to like Stu and be Controversial:tm: with his character, and Yearz not only scratched it but cleaved my arm off! Oi! The reason I began writing was wholly due to the foundation Danni laid. I wouldn’t have bothered if I hadn’t seen what an ugly but gripping and human experience you could portray with these characters, and known there was a place for it and someone could really enjoy it. I don’t think there’s anyone who follows me and isn’t already familiar with Yearz, but on that chance, gotta be clear that I consider my 2Doc to just be a spinoff of what Danni had already paved the way for! If you want to see these guys be harsh and incompatible but inescapably tethered, and have all the jokes actually land, @elapsed-spiral‘s characerization is what you’re after.
So, my standard for softness. This is difficult to describe well and I apologize upfront if it’s just a messy ramble, but I feel there’s a distinction between enjoying things in a respectful way, in a way that acknowledges skill and storytelling, and getting a warm-and-fuzzy sort of enjoyment out of them. I’ve definitely read and enjoyed softer portrayals of them as well-written stories, but I do think of my own characterization as very removed from that. What is “standard soft” for me is not very, but that has no bearing on whether soft stories are good or not! There is a certain “tenderness culture” on Tumblr and I respect it, I see no problem in making the most personally fulfilling content possible– but in response to the demand for that alone, it at times feels like there’s a necessity to explain yourself, or to force a happy ending just so it’s seen as having a “purpose.” (I mean, fair, realistically my stories serve no purpose at all. They are an exercise in futility 100%) This is not necessarily a popular viewpoint, but for myself, I don’t think the main purpose of a story is making you feel any specific way, good or bad– the main purpose is to tell a story the reader can think about and engage with, and if you tell it well enough they’ll feel what it’s appropriate to feel. It is a vitally important bonus in distinguishing “passable” stories from “good” ones, and that emotional response is what makes you feel connected to the material and author, but it’s not all a story has to be. What we feel connected to won’t always look the same, and it won’t ever reach an entire audience the same way. But mostly, when it comes to the sweeter side of 2Doc– me giving a “stamp of approval” is totally worthless, I don’t think anyone writing actually enjoyable stories that people feel good reading are aiming to hook me, haha. Nor should they! I’d never want someone to add hard edges they don’t like onto the soft stories that inspired them, they matter and they’re cherished as they are! As long as one kind of content exists, that’s a good reason for another kind to exist, and another, and then– thank god!– we get many pieces of work with completely different ideas behind them.
As for an extremely soft writer who I think is just phenomenal, you can’t miss @supposed2bfunny! Beck’s been filling this role in the fandom in such a unique way and it’s clear why so many connect with her. There is a hard-baked romance to her writing that is undeniable, and I mean that in a very classic sense. Her grip on language and personal poetic style is very enjoyable to me no matter how much “our 2Docs” resemble each other or not! I hope Beck knows that I very much respect not only her talent, but the soft heart that goes into it. People need that, and people will always need that! It’s a very human thing, to seek things that resonate with you, and I have a great love for human things!

Capitalizing on Cringe Culture
I recently had a post about the alt right get a lot of notes, TERFs reblogged it, so I added some stuff about how TERF thinking strongly resembles the alt right, which ended up in me getting TERF-swarmed. It wasn’t a very pleasant experience, but it helped me articulate some thoughts about the uses and abuses of cringe culture here on Tumblr and online in general.
Both TERFs and the alt right use cringe culture in very similar ways. They actively seek out “cringe-worthy” images and text by their chosen targets, snip them out of context, then reframe them within a different community of meaning. A physical analogy would be cutting out articles from a newspaper, or perhaps even just a paragraph from an article, and pasting it into a scrapbook page entitled “WORDS OF THE ENEMY”. A huge chunk of their online activity consists of this diligent searching, collection, reframing and collation. The alt right call it “red pilling”, TERFs call it “peak trans.” It’s a tactic that works to 1) radicalize new people into the group 2) keep radicalized people radicalized by altering their frame of thinking to recontextualize new information about “the enemy” in the same rigid way.
It’s super easy to snip-and-reframe stuff on today’s internet, and I’m not saying TERFs and the alt right are the only ones who do it. Just a few days ago there was a post on my dash screencapping some libertarian from “Ancapistan” arguing that the female orgasm was a myth promoted by cultural marxists, citing as evidence his own inability to observe one in his female partners. I laughed my ass off and slammed the reblog button. It’s unrealistic to demand such a high standard of being nice on the internet that we never laugh at people we disagree with. Cringe culture isn’t going anywhere, but we can at least be more conscious about it.
Another tendency both TERFs and the alt right share is a fundamental dishonesty. When they can’t get enough material on their cringe expeditions among the enemy, they’re happy to make it up. Dishonesty as a community isn’t just about individual dishonest people, it’s about people knowing that something is dishonest is going on but looking away, not caring, or actively excusing it because “even if this one example is fake they say things just like it anyway.” The alt right has an army of anti-SJW sympathizers who create troll blogs pretending to be SJWs. They troll themselves all the time, but since they’re so fundamentally dishonest it doesn’t bother them. Before a few days ago, I didn’t know that TERFs did the exact same thing, but they do! And they won’t call out the people who do it.
A heavy reliance on cringe culture doesn’t always mean cult-like thinking, but it’s one of the stepping stones. And even if your chosen political identity isn’t cult-like, cringe culture can distract people from creating positive change in the world. If you get online and spend 10% of your free time laughing at your enemy and insulting your enemy, you feel better, your friends feel better, you get on with your day. If you spend 99% of your time doing that, on and on, for weeks and days and even years, you’re not working on yourself and you’re not working to create positive lasting change in your community.
So maybe next time before you dive into a cringe culture binge, think critically about the stuff that’s being snipped and reframed first.
Is this something produced by an incredibly young person whose brain isn’t fully formed? Or does it seem like they’re drunk, high on drugs, or typing from the tenth dimension? Maybe it’s better to just ignore it.
Is this text/image really representative of the enemy group in question, or is it an extremist minority viewpoint that the group in question doesn’t support or disavows? If so, that’s important for context.
Does the text/image use hyperbole and humor and parody? If so, it’s harmfulness should be judged on a slightly different standard. For example, fascists love jokes about throwing leftists out of helicopters. It’s hyperbole but it’s also incredibly harmful because it has been done and they seriously want to do it in future.  Meanwhile, jokes about “kill all men” aren’t harmful on that scale (I think they’re kind of stupid and not funny, but they’re not harmful) because no group of women in the history of the world has killed all their men. It’s just not something that happens, it has no chance of happening in the present because women have zero institutional power to do that, and it’s not going to happen in the future.
Is the text/image purely fake? In other words, is it made up to make the target group in question look bad? This is shockingly frequent, and it’s more frequent when it comes to hate groups like alt righters and TERFs.

So, there’s just some stuff I feel like I need to get off my chest right now.
When I got up this morning, I didn’t even want to think about coming onto this hell-site. Normally my complaints are all in jest, like I laugh about how the Tumblr community can be really corrupt and unforgiving but it’s never anything serious. It’s on trend to laugh about how ridiculous the cliques on here are. But during this week, things weren’t so funny anymore.
I blame myself, mostly. I’m the one who opened my big mouth and got involved with something that was never my place to begin with. I saw a post I didn’t agree with and I said something about it, but I didn’t think it would escalate to the point that it did. Maybe you saw the back and forth, maybe you didn’t, but the gist of it is that I got in an altercation with a hardcore radical feminist over the significance of the father figure and it blew way out of control.
I’m not sorry for the things I said. I think for the most part, I was being pretty reasonable. Disagree with me if you’d like, but that’s my opinion and I‘m sticking with it. What bothered me about this wasn’t the fact that this person had apparently experienced what they consider abuse from their father, but the overarching generalizations they were making about fathers as a whole. Seeing someone denounce an entire demographic solely based on their own negative experiences really rubbed me the wrong way. I understand that if you’ve been abused by your father, or any parent or adult whatsoever, you are more than allowed to feel resent, aggravation, and even hatred towards them. You’re allowed to cry and curse and question. That’s only natural. I would feel the same way in that predicament.
The problem arises, however, when you take those negative emotions and thrust them unto other people. You cannot apply a localized incident to the perception of the whole. Child abuse is common, I understand that. But that does not mean it’s normal. That does not mean that every other person has been beaten, belittled, and backstabbed by their parent. That does not mean that every father has looked at his daughter and thought to himself “What a disappointment because you don’t have a dick.” Some do, yes, but all and that I feel was the meat of the argument. This person refused to believe that any father was capable of goodness and kindness, that no matter what these men are sexist pigs who raise their daughters to believe they are inferior, that they overemotional and worthless, “raised as servants and trophies.” I’ve met and learned from a lot of people in my life, and especially the past few months as my colleagues have bore their rawest, truest selves in personal essays and short stories workshopped in class and out of the 60-some kids whose journeys I’ve read, only a small percentage have ever spoken ill of their fathers across both genders. If anything, they have praised their fathers for working multiple jobs to support their families or for the tender reactions they’ve had to their children’s suicide attempts after one too many classmates bullied them. Perhaps in different social circles, in different cities or countries or cultures, things are different and fathers are normally abusive and treat their daughters as if they are worthless and inferior. In fact, I know of quite a few places where this is probably considered the norm. I think without the context of where, it’s hard to pinpoint what is normalized and what isn’t because the world varies so greatly from one mile to the next but that doesn’t mean any of that treatment is right or excusable. Nobody deserves to be treated like that by a parent. That, I comprehend completely.
This “discussion” could’ve been conducted in a civilized and respectful manner. We could’ve been adults about this. But we weren’t. I did my best to be respectful, to try and point out where this person was going wrong with their viewpoint because I personally find it shameful and petty and completely narrow-minded to believe that there is only one way to experience something and that however you experienced it is that one way. It shows a sincere lack of empathy and that your only concern is to further your own agenda by forcing your close-minded ideals on someone else. Like, for example, someone only likes to eat their sandwich when it’s cut in rectangles. They’ve never eaten a sandwich any other way. This is fine until you meet someone who eats their sandwiches cut in triangles. This is new and different and scary. You can either accept that people eat their sandwiches all different kinds of ways or you can completely denounce that it is even possible to eat your sandwich cut in triangles and tell anyone who believes otherwise that they are wrong and that their triangles are rectangles in disguise or something else completely ridiculous. I feel like that’s where the entire issue stemmed from, though: a refusal to believe that anything other than your own experiences are valid, and that people only ever experience things the same way you do.
This tension, I feel, rose to such a fever pitch, and this person apparently grew so frustrated with my refusal to agree that all fathers are horrible human beings, that I guess they ran out of tools in their arsenal to use against me and had to resort to personal attacks and belittling. Saying because I’m young, my prefrontal cortex hasn’t fully developed yet as if to form some sort of insult against my cognitive functioning and social capabilities. So basically as if to insinuate that my age is an excuse to peg me as less intelligent. Calling me an abuse-hating piece of shit solely because I don’t think it’s right for someone to hate a whole demographic based on a localized experience (but apparently that’s a trend these days? Like how the news reports specific incidents in which cops have hurt/shot/killed members of the black community, and suddenly every cop is a racist pig who deserves to die. Or if someone had been bitten by a dog as a kid so therefore considers every dog dangerous and wants them to be shot in the head or abused or something as if that’s going to atone for it.) Let me just repeat this: I’m not telling you to trust men, because trusting anyone without evidence of them being worthy is a stupid mistake anyways. If your father has proven that he is not worthy of your trust and respect, then by all means, don’t grant him that privilege. The trauma they have inflicted on you and anyone else whose shared your experiences is disgusting and wrong, and I don’t want to see girls raised in that narrow-minded, disgusting standard. Talk about your trauma, talk about your frustration, curse and cry and do whatever else you want to express what you feel about this, but just know that men treating their daughters like this is not normal and it’s not okay and not every father does this, so please do not try to make everyone else in the world conform to your own perception just because you have had a negative experience because not everyone shares that and to believe otherwise, or even say that that doesn’t matter, is petty and close-minded and sad.
Another contributor to the conversation even went so far as to blatantly assume I was a man because my views differed so greatly from their own, and then when I stated that I was, in fact, a woman, they went on to say that because I didn’t agree with their views, I might as well be a man. As if women are only worth advocating for and protecting if they align to a certain set of views. Denouncing my right to be a woman because I disagree is honestly so sexist and disgusting and I still can’t get it out of my head. I just cannot believe that apparently even though I’m a woman, I’m apparently viewed as scum and no better than those big, awful, misogynistic men because I don’t want what men have done to you to influence your demeanor so strongly that you spend your life stewing in hatred. I don’t think that’s any way to live, but do what you want. I have no control over how you live your life.
The thing that aggravated me more than anything, however, was the last condescending note on the last message I replied to: “It’s ok, I bring you the message of hope: your father doesn’t matter and you don’t need his approval to be happy.”
This seriously set me off. This person knows nothing of my father and to assume that he doesn’t matter solely because their experiences with their own father made them bitter and fostered a hatred for fathers as a whole is disgusting.
I don’t talk about my father a lot, and I don’t reveal a lot of information about him solely for the sake of protecting him (because I’m very protective over him) but I feel like I need to say something now. I need to let you know how far from my father deviates from his insinuation that he does not matter and that his approval is unimportant.
My father grew up his entire life wanting to be a police officer, and he fought for decades to achieve his dream. For years, he faced nothing but setbacks. He nearly lost his arm when it was crushed in a printing press. It’s a miracle he didn’t need an amputation. This happened mere weeks before his last test in the police academy, the one that would grant him a job if he passed. All of that hard work went down the drain, and he had to spend years in rehab just to get functionality of his arm back. Through that rehab, he began woodworking and had his own business where he’d work as a vendor at craft shows. Becoming a cop was a pipe dream at this point. The business was keeping us afloat just fine anyways, until the economy crashed and our business went under. He worked meaningless retail jobs just to keep us afloat, we moved every year, we even got evicted once and had to live in a hotel for a little while. He worked in a juvenile detention facility for a short time where he’d get into massive altercations with delinquent teens, one of which pulled his thumb back so far in a fight that my dad had to get surgery and go through another round of rehab. During this time, my dad was unhappy. He wasn’t pleased with where his life was going, and I think he felt like a failure because he was struggling to support his wife and child. There were times when my parents would fight and he would reach a breaking point and storm out. I resented him for a long while for this, but in retrospect I understand. I would’ve done the same. Throughout it all, though, he never made me feel as if I was incapable of doing anything or was inferior because of my gender. He rallied for me no matter what, he pushed me to work hard and kick ass and succeed in life. We’ve butted heads a lot and had our disagreements, but when I look back I respect and understand his perspective and my current self agrees with his views because I know I was naive and selfish back then and that what I thought was best for me may not have been the right path. I have seen the effects of financial turmoil, rejection, prejudice, and depression firsthand through the experiences of my father. I have caught him on the phone with my mother at rock bottom, saying he doesn’t understand why he tries anymore and saying he’d be better off dead. I remember stealing the phone from his hand and throwing it to the other side of the room, screaming crying at him how wrong he was because I knew he was worth more than he ever believed he was. When I was in middle school, after much encouragement from my mother, my dad finally decided to try becoming a police officer again. We pursued eighth grade and the police academy in parallel. After he graduated, he spent four years applying for jobs but his gray hair was an asset of discrimination. Nobody wanted to hire an old guy because he might be incapable of doing everything a twenty-something can. Finally, he was met with a department who wanted him, but his qualifications were quickly reaching their expiration. If he was going to finally do this, he would have to travel eight hours away to the state’s law enforcement headquarters, meet with the in court, and plead for an extension. This department promised to back him up. My dad made the long journey with hope that he’d finally achieve his dream. The department that wanted to hire him backed out last minute. My dad had to stand all alone in front of the higher ups and plead his case. A case which they rejected. My dad’s qualification expired and he still had not been hired. At this point, he no longer saw the point. He was prepared to give up. My mom refused to let him. They saved up all their money so he could afford to go through the police academy again and get re-certified. He graduated shortly after I graduated high school. He started applying again. Finally, someone wanted to hire him. And the best part was that it was our own county, so we wouldn’t have to move. This was a really drastic change for all of us as my dad began working 12 hour shifts on the road in a time when Black Lives Matter and hatred against the police was beginning to rapidly rise. This coupled with the fact that I was a full-time college student now, I was caught up in a boy who didn’t love me back, I was losing all my friends, and I was engaging in unhealthy eating habits all caused me to spiral. I nearly dropped out of college, which infuriated my father. He refused to let me give up, and didn't speak to me for two days when I insisted. At the time, I hated him for it but looking back from where I am now, I understand. He saw himself in me: that hopeless, angry, depressed being who didn't think they were capable enough and just wanted to take the easy way out. I took the bus to campus behind his back to beg an advisor to let me drop my classes. This advisor, who retired before I could thank him, convinced me to only drop half of my courseload. I confided in him about my fears, telling him of how I couldn't eat or sleep or focus because all I could think about was if my father was going to home that night. Of how every morning hug before he left for work might be the last. It haunted me. I couldn't stand to lose him. My dad and I have always had this very special relationship. When my mom's maternity leave ended, she went back to work and my dad raised me for the first year of my life. He always rallied for me and raised me under the notion that I was capable of anything I put my mind to. He never made me feel as if I was inferior or worthless or unloved. Everything he said and did was with the intention of encouraging me toward success, to achieve everything I could've possibly wanted. And while he achieved his own dream, things didn't get any easier. His field training officer constantly wrote shitty progress reports and poked fun at my father for his age, even if he was doing everything right. This affected his job performance so greatly that he was nearly fired because they thought he was incapable of doing the job correctly. Eventually, they came to an agreement. My father was put in the jail and trained as a corrections officer, making him dual-sworn, and would spend the year like that before being permitted to work on the road again. Despite still being in the corrections academy at the time, he was mistaken for a seasoned professional. To this day, he still works in the jail as a highly respected officer. It's not what he originally planned, but it's the hand he was dealt and he's still happy. And I could not be prouder of the man whom I call dad. Neither of us have been perfect-- we've butted heads and had our disagreements-- but in the end I understand why he's done the things he's done. He has fought against every setback thrown at him and still achieved his success and for that, he is the most resilient, inspiring human being I have ever had the honor of knowing. I seek his approval not because he is my father or even because he is a man but because I highly respect him. I want him to be proud of me. His approval is important to me because he does matter. The fact that someone who doesn't even know any of this had the audacity to tell me otherwise is why I reacted the way I did, because honestly how dare you.
I know I am incredibly lucky. I know I am privileged to have been gifted a father so strong and wonderful. He has left an immense impact on my life, my behavior, and my perception of the world that I am forever grateful for. I am highly protective of him because of all these things.
This is not to say that I expect all fathers to be so great. I know that's not true. I know there are fathers out there who are completely horrible. I have seen that firsthand, as well. My boyfriend's father has filled him with broken promises and favors a son that is not even of his own blood. My best friend's father has been less than kind to both her and her mother and brother. Yet in both of these instances, despite the awful things these men may have done, in both cases neither are filled with so much hatred so as to completely denounce their father. They still care for their dads and would never wish anything ill upon them. Even the great Audrey Hepburn, whose father abandoned her as a child and was a Nazi sympathizer, reconciled with the man and supported him financially until his death. Perhaps these are just specific cases of rare compassion, an anyone else in the world would seethe and curse and spit. I can't help but humbly admire their strength. It's not easy to look at someone whose wronged you and tell them that you forgive them, that you would never wish harm upon them, and that you still care about them. Because hatred is easy. It takes no effort to end the discussion and walk away, to scowl and badmouth. You can live your entire life like that. And everyone is guilty of it. It's something I still struggle with to this day, as I imagine every does and will continue to do until the end of their lives.
If your father, or parent or any adult for that matter, has abused you then of course by no means are you required to forgive them. You can curse and cry and be angry about it. No matter how common it may be, treating your child like shit is wrong and abnormal and no one deserves to be subjected to that. It's only human to hold resentment toward those experiences but the way I see it is that we all have a choice: we can either let it define us, let that anger and hatred consume our every waking moment, or we can learn from those experiences, prove ourselves successful and strong, and pursue happiness in spite of our tragedies. Granted, Rafiki says it much more eloquently than I do: "The past can hurt but the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it." I'm not here to tell anyone how to live their lives, but I know that letting yourself stew in hatred gets old after a while. It rots your insides and leaves you cold and lifeless and tired. I don't think that's any way to live. We have such a finite amount of time on this earth, I can't imagine wanting to waste it feeling bitter when you can break those chains and learn to embrace something brighter with the cards you've been dealt. Maybe I'm naive, but I'd like to believe that all humans are inclined to be inherently good. We are complex, imperfect creatures who make mistakes and stumble but to err is only human. Everyone fucks up but it's how we react to those situations that truly define us. It's easy to be cynical-- the world is dark and cruel place with vile, selfish people-- but there's good in it, too. At the end of the day, we need to believe in the good in spite of the bad.
Mistakes and mistreatment are like paint. They build up over time until the entire canvas is smothered in ugly splotches and dribbling onto the floor. It's always going to be there somewhere in your house, but what you decide to do with it is your choice. You can let it sit there and resent it's existence, scoffing and sneering at it as it constantly looms, completely unavoidable. Or you can pick it up, lock it in the closet, and start a new canvas. One where you decide what to paint. You can bring continue to paint the same ugly picture, or you can paint something new and decide whether to include colors from the first picture or not. Either way, the choice is yours. Leaving the first one alone is easy. It requires no effort. But after a time, certain color combinations can make you sick if you live within them too long. It's not fulfilling to look at. Why waste so much time staring at something that makes you unhappy? Even if you decide to paint something new, however, your canvas is yours and yours alone as is the same with everyone else. No one can tell you what colors to apply, or even pick up your paintbrush, but you cannot do the same for others. Not everyone will need to put the first picture in the closet, and that's okay. Sometimes other people's paintings just come out prettier the first time around. But that doesn't mean you can splatter your own snot green and vomit yellow onto someone else's canvas because you're bitter and think every first canvas is inclined to be nasty and ugly from the getgo. To believe otherwise, to see colors that are not there, is only furthering your own agenda and contributing to a bigger problem. Accept that not everyone's canvas is the same. Accept that you have the option to put yours in the closet and repaint, that you don't need to stare at something so ugly for the rest of your life and harbor resentment towards every canvas in the world. The choice is yours:  you can stew in hatred or you can make the choice to grow. I'm not here to tell anyone which to pick, because that's not my choice. Only you can make that decision. I just hope that anyone facing a struggle and harboring resentment toward anyone can find that strength to not let it define them, to work towards finding their own happiness and making peace with the circumstances they've been dealt. Everyone deserves happiness, it's just whether or not we decide to pursue it in spite of the negative that dictates what path we take.

To most people, to be anorexic is to have a debilitating disease, an eating disorder. But in the mouths of Kim Kardashian West and her famous sisters, that description seems to have another meaning: to be desirably, delightfully thin.
We learned this tidbit recently when Kim posted videos of herself and her sisters joking about it on her Instagram account. Their jokes gained traction and circulation when they were reposted by others on Twitter.
“Your hair extensions, your ass, your tits, everything, they’re heavy, ’cause she’s fucking voluptuous,” Khloé Kardashian says while ogling her sister Kim in an Instagram story posted to Kim’s account. “But she’s anorexic here,” Khloé continues, pointing at Kim’s waist and noting, “her arms are, like, pin-thin, they’re like my pinky.”
Kim laughs, appearing to take Khloé’s comment as a high compliment. The clip was part of a series of videos posted to Kim’s Instagram story in which Kim asks both Khloé and their half-sister Kendall Jenner how skinny she looked.
In a different clip, Kendall looks at Kim and says, “No, like, I’m really concerned. I don’t think you’re eating.”
“What?!” Kim says, expressing delight wrapped in fake shock. “Oh, my god, thank you.”
In each of the videos, Kim prods and pokes, trying to coerce each sister into flattering words about her weight. Each time they do, she responds with giggles and thank-yous.
The backlash was nearly immediate.
Saw a video where Kendall Jenner tells Kim Kardashian that she looks like she never eats and that she’s concerned about how skinny she is. Kim K says “thank you” in the most delighted voice.
Like, do they ever get tired of being so problematic?

On one hand, there isn’t anything wrong with sisters complimenting one another’s appearance. But because of the way Kim’s sisters complimented her, and because the conversation played out in front of Kim’s 115 million Instagram followers, many people believed Kim was setting a poor example for anyone who viewed the videos by suggesting that looking like someone with anorexia or starving yourself is something to be commended.
The videos were clearly meant to be funny. The women are laughing, and one can glean that their intent is sarcasm. On some level, it’s not difficult to get into the Kardashians’ mindset and find some dark, sardonic humor in Kim’s obvious weight loss — that women’s bodies are held to impossible standards, especially women who are famous and in the public eye. It’s difficult to think of a woman, and impossible to think of a family of women, whose bodies are scrutinized and judged as much as the Kardashians’ bodies are. Perhaps these jokes were a way to vocalize the pressure they face about their looks.
But as the Kardashians’ critics point out, the glorification of Kim’s skinniness and the joking about anorexia are dangerous viewpoints to share in front of the young people who idolize the sisters.
The Kardashian sisters regularly post benign or inane videos to their Instagram and Snapchat stories. Watch their stories on any given day and you’re likely to find them posing during hair and makeup shoots, giggling over inside jokes, and goofing off with the apps’ various filters. Most of what they post could be reasonably characterized as silly but harmless.
But many people have argued that this particular series of clips was actively harmful, not only because of how Kim and her sisters casually tossed around the term “anorexic,” but because this isn’t the first time Kim has displayed an apparent obliviousness to the message about eating disorders, anorexia, and the value of being thin that she sends.
In January, Kim was criticized for posting an ad promoting a weight loss shake. And in May, she was dragged for posting an advertisement selling appetite-suppressing lollipops to be seen by her millions of Instagram followers:
Whether an adult decides to buy a lollipop that is intended to kill her appetite because Kim Kardashian promoted it is completely up to the adult in question. There’s also nothing wrong with wanting to look like Kim Kardashian, if that is how one’s spirit is moved. But Kim also has legions of young fans, and the message she’s sending with the ad is that these lollipops will help them look and be more like her, including her weight.
One of the most outspoken critics was actress Jameela Jamil, a star of NBC’s The Good Place, who called Kim a toxic influence:
No. Fuck off. No. You terrible and toxic influence on young girls. I admire their mother’s branding capabilities, she is an exploitative but innovative genius, however this family makes me feel actual despair over what women are reduced to. pic.twitter.com/zDPN1T8sBM
— Jameela Jamil (@jameelajamil) May 16, 2018
Kim didn’t directly respond to critiques of her ad or her responsibility. She did, however, retweet a fan who photoshopped the ad into a declaration that Kim’s beauty business was thriving, complete with an added LOL. This gave the impression that she didn’t care about the conversation the ad had sparked:
The current backlash to her Instagram stories echoes Jamil’s sentiment that Kim is setting a poor example:
I’m just gonna say this. Using the words “anorexic” and “you look like you don’t eat” as compliments is disgusting. Even if you’re saying them as a joke. An eating disorder should never be used like that. And the fact that Kim Kardashian was squealing with happiness is sick.
— ash (@ashisasag) July 30, 2018
Kim’s critics point out that Kim, whether she realizes it or not, is spreading a dangerous message to her fans and taking her to task for not realizing just how powerful she is or what a bad example she’s setting.
In the sphere of contemporary pop culture, I can’t think of a celebrity whose body is as scrutinized, discussed, and written about in the news as Kim Kardashian’s. Just this week, in the midst of this conversation about anorexia, Kim has also made news for clapping back at Tyson Beckford after he commented that she looks as if her plastic surgeon botched her hip.
Articles exploring which parts of Kim’s body are “real,” or about how to get her butt, are endless. Some media outlets have tried to figure out how much plastic surgery she’s had over the years.
And Kim and her sisters don’t shy away from this coverage. On their show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the sisters talk openly about which looks they love and how they looked in photo shoots. They regularly discuss their diets and binge eating. After her son Saint was born in 2015, Kim set a very public weight loss goal and frequently tweeted updates on her progress. She once Snapchatted getting a tummy tuck, and of course there were articles about that too.
It’s all part of a never-ending cycle of attention and discussion around how Kim looks and how much she weighs. The Huffington Post even has an entire section devoted to the topic and follows every fluctuation (loss, gain, loss, gain):
HuffPost’s KKW weight gain section. HuffPost
It’s no secret that women’s bodies are judged (and expected to change) in ways that men’s aren’t. Famous women’s appearances are scrutinized in an even more intense and pretty gross way. The Kardashians’ appearances are the pinnacle of that scrutiny.
And to be fair, it’s a two-way street. Kim and her sisters have leveraged their looks — from talking about what makeup they’re using to posting the aforementioned tummy tuck on Snapchat to Khloe hosting a show called Revenge Body to Kylie Jenner giving an interview about her lip fillers, and, of course, Kendall Jenner building a successful modeling career — as part of their business.
I don’t have the calculus to quantify whether the media scrutiny over the Kardashians’ appearances is worth the business capital they’ve gained from it. (Kylie Jenner is reportedly on the verge of becoming a billionaire, thanks to her cosmetics line.) I wouldn’t argue with the notion that the constant scrutiny is part of the Faustian deal they’ve signed up for.
But the relationship the Kardashian sisters, including Kim, have to their bodies and to society’s standard of what their bodies should look like is not typical.
Understanding that, it’s easy to see how living up to those pressures manifests itself in equating thinness with beauty and beauty with worth. Kim joking about her weight isn’t especially different from the stomach flu joke in The Devil Wears Prada or Amy Schumer’s cracks about how everyone in Hollywood is starving. It’s also not that far removed from various people on Instagram or other kinds of social media posting about achieving their summer bodies or joking about it, ironically or otherwise.
With Kim and her sisters, though, the missing link is self-awareness. In her Instagram stories, Kim’s glibness about anorexia made a statement — regardless of her intentions or lack thereof — about thinness being more desirable than health, and reinforced the idea that beauty is worth harming yourself over.
What’s frustrating to her critics is that Kim has the power to change that conversation. Celebrities like superstar tennis player Serena Williams, celestial saint Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga have all talked publicly about their insecurities, body shame, and weight. They’ve seemed to understand the power they have to set an example for anyone who views them as a role model, and have made a concerted effort to push the conversation forward in a positive way.
If Kim Kardashian were to talk about how society affects the way she thinks of her body in addition to revealing the work it takes to maintain (she already often posts her workouts to Snapchat), it could be as powerful as the message she’s currently putting out there. It would be an equally newsmaking story as this anorexia mess. She is definitely famous enough to change the tone of the media scrutiny of her looks. But it’s not something she seems particularly concerned about right now — at least not on her Instagram.

Effective ways to Check out Faster As well as Get Your College Work Done In A Blink By Howard

INTERVIEW: Ewing’s Royals Embark on an Inhuman, Intergalactic Quest
Marvel’s super-powered Inhumans were born on Earth, but the culture and means that created them were extraterrestrial in nature. So when things become untenable for them on Earth, it’s only natural they would seek answers off-planet; first at the fallen homeworld of the galactic empire that created them, the Kree, and then further out into this galaxy and adjacent ones.
RELATED: Ewing Readies the U.S.Avengers for Deployment in the Marvel Universe
That’s the basic set-up for writer Al Ewing and artist Jonboy Meyers April-launching “ResurrXion” title, “Royals,” which sends the Inhuman royal family out into the cosmos of the Marvel Universe on a mission of utmost importance. But just how far out into space will they have to go? Which non Inhuman former Avenger is accompanying them on their journey and why? What sort of vessel will ferry them out into space? And what initial antagonists will be waiting to oppose them? For the answers to these questions and more, we spoke with Ewing about “Royals.”
CBR: For the past few years, the Inhuman Royal family has been pursuing an Earth-based agenda to advance and protect their people, but in “Royals,” they head out into space. What can you tell us about their mission? How critical is it to the survival of their people?
“Royals” #1 cover art by Jonboy Meyers
Al Ewing: Well, there’s a limit to what I can tell you without spoiling the in-progress “IvX” books, so get ready for a lot of cryptic answers… but I will say that the mission is pretty critical. It’s a quest to find answers – some lost secrets vital to the Inhumans – and it’s going to take them out further than any Marvel space-farers have gone before, to my knowledge. Hala – the dead, ruined world that was once the centre of the Kree Empire – is the first stop, but it’s a long way from being the last.
At the forefront of the mission is former Inhuman king Black Bolt and current Inhuman queen Medusa, who have been working together in recent years, though they’ve been living separate lives. How will living and working together initially impact the formerly married couple’s dynamic? What does it mean for the rest of the cast to have Medusa and Black Bolt on this mission together?
Black Bolt and Medusa are closer than they were in some ways, but there are still things driving them apart. There’s a secret between them – as hinted in “Inhumans: Prime,” which I think is out the month before – that might end up putting more distance than ever between the two of them. Can the relationship be saved at this point? Should it be? Are Black Bolt and Medusa too far apart from each other now to reconcile? We’ll have to see, but I can tell you that when the truth comes out, the rest of the cast will definitely get involved.
Your other two cast members of the Inhuman Royal family are Crystal and Gorgon. What’s your sense of these characters?
Crystal is there as one of the key Royals, and she’s proven her credentials over the past couple of years as a leader. There’s an interesting dynamic somewhere in there, with her sister Medusa as the regal, mythical Queen figure, and Crystal as a more down-to-earth leader-type who gets her hands dirty with the day-to-day. And we’re going to be getting some romantic drama from her as well, as her great lost love, Ronan the Accuser, is out in space and very much in the Royals’ way.
Gorgon was recently healed from a spinal injury by the Inhuman healer Panacea, so he can walk again – but it wasn’t a magical reset button by any means. He has bad days and some serious pain issues. But the Inhumans need him, and Medusa needs him, and he’s not going to hesitate for a second before throwing himself back into the fight.
The two Nuhumans in “Royals,” Flint and Swain, had a pretty tumultuous journey with Crystal and Gorgon over in “All-New Inhumans.” Which of these characters’ traits do you find especially interesting? What kinds of roles will they play in the book?
“Royals” #2 cover art by Jonboy Meyers
Flint’s going out there because he owes the Royals and because he needs to prove something to himself, and he’s still working out what – sometimes people do things and work out the “why” of it later, and we’re not going to get into it for an issue or two. His foster family dying of Terrigen is an element of it, and what he feels he owes the Royals is part of it. I feel like there’s a lot of complexity in him that I’d like to explore, and it just made sense that out of all the best-known NuHumans, he’d be the one to feel the tug of the quest. He’s searching for something, and out there might be where he finds it.
Swain is more driven by duty. She’s the Captain – you can’t have a starship without a captain – and she’s got a responsibility to Crystal and the other Royals that she won’t abandon. And she’s fun, which I hope I can capture in all this space questing. There’s the tug of space there, but the tug of change, as well, the need to shake things up, for her and Flint both. I’m a big fan of the “call of the stars” idea, and there’s a little bit of that at work.
Rounding out the cast is your non Inhuman character, the extradimensional Kree and former Young Avenger known as Marvel Boy. What made you want to bring him into the book? What does he add to the overall dynamic?
We were interested in having a “non-Inhuman” on the crew, and when Wil Moss suggested Marvel Boy as a possibility, I was right on board. He’s got that connection to the Kree – the ruined world of Hala is one of the first places we’ll be going – but with his other-dimensional origins, he’s also got a different viewpoint to most characters in the Marvel Universe, which puts him in a prime spot to see things other people miss. The Kree on his world had knowledge the Kree on ours didn’t – is that just from standard deviation between universes, or has a great secret been buried… maybe literally?
I realize that’s about the third or fourth “secret” in this interview so far – all of which is in aid of keeping my secrets from the readers more than anything. Not to mention the secrets of “IvX,” still ongoing. I did say I was going to be cryptic…
[Laughs] Fair enough! What can you tell us about the vessel the cast of “Royals” will be traveling on? Will it have a support staff of reoccurring characters, “Star Trek”-style?
It’s called the Astarion – named for a hero of Inhuman legend who may or may not have been a distant ancestor of Gorgon, and the inspiration for the Minotaur. That story’s one for, “if we have time.” It’s probably closer to the Millennium Falcon – it’s big, big as a building, big enough to comfortably house seven, but it’s not the Enterprise. There’s most of everything you might need – a medbay, weapons systems, what-have-you – and there’s a bridge that we’ll probably end up spending some time on, but there isn’t a support staff. I felt the mythical nature of the journey was best served by having everyone on the ship be a central part of the cast.
In the aftermath of recent events like the “Black Vortex,” and with the Guardians of the Galaxy currently stranded on Earth, the cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe is a pretty crazy, wide-open place. What threats will your cast will run afoul of?
Series artist Jonboy Meyers’ Inhumans redesigns for “Royals”
First stop is the dead world of Hala, once the homeworld of the Kree -heading there, and finding the secret buried within it, is what takes us through the first arc. On the way, they’ll encounter a couple of other enemies, some new-ish – like the rampaging Chitauri horde – some considerably older and more personal. Funny you should mention the “Black Vortex” – we haven’t seen much of Crystal’s ex-husband Ronan The Accuser since that story, or how his cosmic powers have developed.
From there, we’re heading out – to the edges of the Marvel Universe, and into uncharted territory. We’ve only seen a small part of the myriad galaxies in Marvel Space, and one thing I’m planning to do with this series – something I try to do with every book I’m given – is push the boundaries out a little further, both in terms of space–and time.
Oh, one more thing – remember the Universal Inhumans [from Jonathan Hickman’s “Fantastic Four” run]? I do.
Jonboy Meyers, who’s recently worked on a number of DC books is your collaborator on “Royals.” I’m not super familiar with his work, but it looks like it has a fun almost animated quality to it. What do you enjoy most about his work?
“Animated” is a good word! It’s wild, energized stuff, leaping off the page. He’s good when it comes to the design element, too – his ideas for the ship, and for the Royals’ “space” outfits and variations on them for different planets and environments, have been fascinating, and they’ve given me a bunch of ideas. Seeing what he’s doing with some of the bigger, weirder ideas I’m throwing at him, I’m interested to see more in the line – I think it’ll have a lot of visual punch.
Finally, going back to what you said earlier, it sounds like “Royals” will allow you to play with a number of Marvel’s established intergalactic characters and concepts as well as create a number of new ones. Can you talk anymore about some of the new things you’ll be introducing?
If my plans come together, this is going to add one absolutely huge new thing to the Marvel Universe that at least has the potential to change the entire scope and history of the whole shebang. Fans of Marvel Space, as well as Inhumans fans, would be wise to give this a look. We’re going all the way out to the far side of everything, and we’re coming back with cosmic secrets that’ll hopefully blow everything wide open.
I’ll conclude with a “thank you” to everyone following my work, and everyone who’s asking their local comic shop to put a copy of “Royals,” and a copy of the big “state of the Inhumans” one-off “Inhumans: Prime,” aside when they come out. That helps retailers gauge demand. Aside from that – stay safe, be kind to each other, and good luck in everything you do.

Prince of Stride: Alternative 2 – 12 | ACCA 1 | Hand Shakers 1 | Nanbaka 15 | Marginal #4 1
(ep 2)
I don’t think I noticed this last time, but the dropped item is a Stride headset.
“…that won’t affect your future…”
That technique, where the memory becomes “movie footage”…I like it. Plus, Kyosuke was basically half of the reason why I stuck around with this show…haha.
“Fubun ritsu” at least translates directly…
Without context, the dialogue sounds pretty funny, especially because Diane should be (half) British and maybe should’ve picked up on the fact D’s sounds like…well…
The “D for Demon” pun is an English only one. The D in the Japanese is for doge (and not Doge, mind you). Doge is short for dogeza, or putting yourself on the ground and bowing furiously (to regain respect, for example).
Even Kadowaki is into the photoshoot!
Ah…without fanservice, this show would never get off the ground. Judging by how well sports anime fare from having pretty boys, that is.
There seems to be a theme of “letting go” in this, which makes it a perfect character study for One Wish They Never Wanted. Unfortunately, I’ve basically finished the story now…
Note tobu is also the word for “to fly”.
It vaguely bugs me that every time the subs go “Takeru”, the Japanese goes “Fujiwara-kun”.
The dude’s name is Asuma (you can hear it in the Japanese clearly), but the subs said “Yuma”.
I never questioned it, but…why is there laundry in the Stride clubroom?
I dunno about shogi, but apparently “a mistake leads to progress”.
(ep 3)
Andromeda is a maiden in the mythology. So Reiji’s right. Also, he’s voiced by Mamoru Miyano. You can’t go wrong with the dude.
Who in Dante’s Inferno is the flashing light head man?
Yeah, I wonder where the “Mee-chan” comes from too.
LOL, biology joke. Luckily, I understand it.
Sometimes Takeru sounds too deep for a teenager.
(ep 4)
Sometimes the humour can be a bit hard to follow in this show, but the visual quality is second to none!
Riku specifically asks to trade bentos, so the “trade bites” thing is deceiving.
I dunno what the “Japan Deep” is, but I think this is it.
Gelidium jelly. Aka agar…in some cases.
Back to Takeru observing muscles. It doesn’t get overdone, which is a good point of this show.
Basically Nagatsuka is Yamato from Nanbaka…haha.
The English is really good around the “on your mark” bit.
(ep 5)
Apparently you can get a motorcycle licence starting at the age of 16. I’m not good with balancing though, so a bike is hardly appropriate for me.
That shot of Hozumi, with the “Kuga” locker in the back…hmph. Nice foreshadowing/suspense shot.
I can’t quite make out what Ayumu’s saying when the subs go “Bering Sea”, as I don’t know the equivalent in Japanese. However, it most likely isn’t “Bering Sea”.
I don’t know what the equivalent to the “KGB” thing is either…Update: Okay, I know it now. It’s “ka ge be”, at least in its audio version.
(ep 6)
What are the helicopters for?
There was a kaitenzushi that Kuga-senpai passed…(hey wait, what am I saying? Kuga’s not my senpai!)
The English on the subway sign behind Yuri is really good. Why are these fine details in this show so good?!
It’s moments when a character smiles and you smile along with them, that’s why I watch anime.
I think “Yuniko” was a parody of UNIQLO, a Japanese brand. Apparently they’re pretty cheap, and I’ve been able to find it in my home city for a good few years now.
Really? Gainaxing? On Diane? I must’ve wiped that from my memory.
Hozumi, don’t leave Kuga-senpai hanging!
(ep 7)
*nods* Heath, Riku, I know your feels.
I dunno what a Kankokukan is…
I think they mean the Sea of Okhotsk…since that’s close to Japan. At least there was a warning that this would indeed be stupid talk and nothing more. However, the “Stop getting creative with my memories!” means that that gibberish was actually a bunch of locations in Japan, characterised by that weird stuff in the animation. I bet only people who are really acquainted with Japan and its geography would get it…because I don’t.
I dunno what a “Jangara” is. Or what “Jangara ramen” is.
It’s really hard to tell who’s bros with who here. Probably because they have completely different hair colours.
If you watch the Riku and Asuma scene carefully, you can see Ayumu, Hozumi and their Saisei counterparts sliding on the balls in the room behind them.
In the back of the “salt to the enemy” scene, it says shio (in romaji), salt (obviously) and shio (in katakana). On Riku’s bag, it says shio (in kanji).
Myogenesis.
Poor Mr Dan…
Shizuma! That loose hairstyle suits you so well!
Batsu ge-mu, LOL.
That Reiji really seems to like Kobe products recommended by Takeru, huh?
Here’s a little something on the Tamaya and Kagiya bits. Kadowaki-ya is a pun on that.
LOL, that manservice.
(ep 8)
4th wall break…?
Hokkaido is known for being snowy…so yeah, “northness” it is.
Of course, when they say “Lee”, “Chan” and so on, it’s Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. The Dragon Awakens belongs to…I dunno, actually.
Is Riku’s hair black when his face is hidden by the magazine (last part of ep with credits)?
(ep 9)
I only just found out, but that fanboy from Saisei, Kaede? He’s voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga, meaning he’s Yuri Katsuki (Yuri!!! on Ice). Kyosuke is voiced by Junichi Suwabe, making him Viktor Nikiforov. Yeah...that happened 3 seasons before Yuri on Ice...
Stick figures…that’s not a very conventional way to save on anime budget, but it’s a way nonetheless.
Gendo pose!
Seriously? Toilet humour? At least it didn’t last for too long.
There’s a box in the hallway that says “Aomori apples” on it.
(ep 10)
Did I just see Kyosuke with no eyes…? No, the aliens got his eyes too! That was so close to a perfect run (pun intended) without those face stealing aliens!
The question about snow is just an equivalent to “something impossible happened”.
“The devil getting sunstroke” was probably due to it being really hot.
Panda bread…the reason why it even exists is because pan da means “It is bread” and panda…is panda.
I know that feel, Riku… I’m only average, I used to not be so average…and that’s the sad part about me.
The rainbow of change…I hope it comes for me too.
(ep 11)
A high touch is a high 5, by the way.
LOL, 5th Symphony. Of course…
LOL, Shizu-man. A cross cultural pun…you don’t see those very often. Update: Apparently, that’s “Oshizu” in the Japanese.
That deadly look in Reiji’s eyes…it’s hard to look away from.
(ep 12)
Hopefully this show helps to motivate me long into the future…!
*yells into the breeze* …Idiots!
Even Hachiko has an EOS decoration, LOL. Hachiko is a dog known for his loyalty, having waited for his master right up until his death. However, his master had died before him.
So whose plan was it to see Honan in the first place (in regards to Galaxy Standard)?
Naked Speed…? What kinda name is that?
So did they…never mind. You know at the end.
Ah, bookends. At least they’re satisfying, even if they’re a little cliched.
The end of summer will last forever…until the winter comes. Heh. Of course I’d see that viewpoint. (Whaddaya mean, I’m too much of an optimist to be a constant whiner? I assume you’ve been through the POSA eps with me so far, and some of them twice.) Anyways, hope to see you again when our decisions once again collide…
Update: The name “Amatsu Ida” was on my mind and I couldn’t figure out why until I realised it’s the same pun as Tenya Iida’s. The POSA staff must’ve thought they were really funny, eh? Also, I thought they all had numbers in their names (Tasuku Senoo, Bantaro Chiyomatsu etc.) but I was wrong about most of them. However, there’s continuity between Shizuma and his bro (they both have the “horse” kanji, Asuma is “playing horse” – playing as in “frolicking” and such – while Shizuma is “quiet horse”) and Tasuku is “task” in katakana.
(ACCA 1)
I’m here because of Natsume Shingo and the stuff he showed on One Punch Man.
Okay, question. How do you spell Jean(?)’s name?
I love how there’s one shot that looks like it’s going to be a mouth to mouth kiss but turns into a secret telling instead.
Fweh? So, the part about the 13 districts suddenly starts to have echoes of the Hunger Games in it, and considering I suddenly decided to implement a Hunger Games parallel/parody into one of my fics one day, I know the exact makeup of such a story.
You can’t really tell Eider’s surprised aside from her open mouth…okay then. Moving on.
There was some very limited animation during that conversation (where Jean learns ACCA won’t be dissolved).
I don’t live in a family of four, so I actually questioned the squabbles over the flan for a second there.
“…or an ACCA chopper.” Speak of the devil, it’s a chopper! *Ahnold voice* Get to za choppaaaaaaaaaa! (Haha.)
What’s up with white uniformed Yurio’s hat? (Assuming Nino is the black haired dude.) Update: Turns out Nino has blue hair, while Knot is the dude with black hair. White uniformed Yurio’s name is Rein.
Pan = bread, apparently in Portuguese as well as Japanese. Also, Rein likes donuts and since he’s the “police” in this area…that sort of seems like a cliché…?
Mauve is the only one I really recognise (aside from Jean), after downloading all the ACCA icons I wanted before I saw this show. Mauve has some really distinctive hair. I recognise Rein from the icons, but not his name…hence the last dot point.
Trembling grey-haired dude’s hand was…actually pretty funny.
I love how Mauve is characterised by indigo hair that moves in the wind. It makes for some very limited yet LOLworthy animation.
Apparently, the café in the east staition (?) has American coffee (albeit lowercase) and blended coffee. Someone managed to stick that in…I’m impressed.
The ED looks arthouse, and I mean that in a good way. So…basically, although this seems to be a weaker showing than SGRS, it looks pretty good and I’m keeping it on for another ep.
(Hand Shakers 1)
Thought it had potential…but then the previews came out, and yet again, I have stumbled across the…problematic anime…of the season.
If there’s one thing I have to question, it’s the giant turtle on one building’s wall. Who thought a giant turtle on a wall was a good idea?
Yeah…if there’s any way to describe me after I see Gainaxing + torture, it’s “losing all attention”. Plus, they didn’t really explain anything yet about this boy who’s (according to the CR synopsis) called Tazuna or his girl Koyori. The CGI is hardly impressive either.
Gainax counter no. 2. Yet again, the scene is hardly impressive by any count. I think they’re trying to go all out with their visual techniques, and they’re achieving nothing.
When the camera specifically rotates around Pres’s mammaries…you know that’s a problem. Problem no. 2 is that I focussed more on a (purple) ad that says “Do Tarot Divinations!” instead of Tazuna. One last chance before I nope out of here, and that’s only because AniList was down earlier today just as I was using it.
Gainaxing no. 3. That’s it – I’m out of here.
(Nanbaka 15)
*groans* After Hand Shakers, I need therapy…ugh. I decided to rewatch a lot of my “worst shows ever” after Hand Shakers, too, which should very well explain my sore throat, feeling of a headache and any other symptoms I may exhibit during this simulcast commentary.
Rin! Rin! Hi! Hi! sounds more nasal. That’s what’s wrong with it.
Shut up…in English? I guess so.
Liquid nitrogen, in English? Hmm. Futamata-sensei’s good...or maybe just whoever was responsible for that.
Ooh…pretty screens…dang you, Hitokoe for being in the pretty screens’ way.
Poor Hitoshi. Doesn’t that hurt?
Where did the splat sound effect come from?
Why do they have to be so direct about…erm, that stuff? Hitoshi wears…those?
You said there were other traps here, eh? *raises eyebrows*
CGI prison bars…? Really? Plus, Hitokoe, you’re already annoying.
Even if parts of this ep were a letdown, Nanbaka is much better than a series of my worst anime…in a row. Ugh. *shivers*
(Marginal #4 1)
Idol anime are hard to access, so I’ve finally got one to cover…maybe.
Minimal CGI…that’s good. No gripes there, then.
Huh. It’s rare to find kanji that are assigned completely different romaji to their usual ones. Tsukuru has its own kanji, but those kanji are for bukatsu or club activities.
I knew it was coming…but L and R? In English, it just sounds uninspired.
Kirihara’s yet another Toshiki Masuda role…haha. Of course.
Marimo? The lil’ fluff moss?
I was confused at first about this “Starclusters” thing, but it turns out it just means the fans. Like Beppu Apes.
Yet another weird name I was prepared for, but got overwhelmed by when it showed up in the show proper. Shy…what a weird name…
I dunno why, but I react more to Lagrange Point’s hair being implausible rather than Marginal’s.
Hah, biology joke. That Atom is such a Masuda character, it’s cute.
Okay – complicated pun time. That kanji (it means “well”, as in the one with the water in it) is one letter I, but the word for “good” in hiragana is two Is but they sound roughly the same.
Of course, the iPun comes from iPhones, but the Taisho era is definitively Japanese.
The I-400 exists…but no one handles things like that at an elite school, right?
Tetranacci exists too, but…you know.
You can tell from their behavious that despite their hair colour, they really are bros, that L and R Nomura.
I think they tried too hard with L…or is it R? Welp, it’s one of them. The gaming twin. Update: It’s R. L’s the green marimo one.
Wow. Swanky room, kid.
Okay, whose idea was it to make Korean barbecue sauce flavoured soda?
Mayuge means eyebrows…
These guys are genre savvy. The specific word I used to describe them were “hideously genre-savvy”, but they hit the sweet spot between “too cliched” and “too much savvy, they ruin the entire genre”.
Wait, who gave the tomato then?
Mai is apparently the name of the group’s manager.
