synposis: with his best friend asking him for help because said best friend was scared he wasn't "boyfriend material" enough, heeseung looks for flower shops for his best friend's girlfriend. thankfully, jake knows someone from the university who has an aunt that owns a flower shop, you. now, heeseung messages you and shyly, but shamelessly asks if he can get any promos or discounts to which you shamelessly answered him, "buy one, take me". heeseung doesn't pass on this, of course. after all, you are pretty damn cute.

months passed by ever since you came back and you and heeseung didn’t waste anymore time. he finally asked the long overdue question of being his girlfriend, you immediately said yes, not even letting him finish the sentence. he asked you if you wanted to move in with him, you said yes, of course and now his horrible flower arrangement that you still take care of very dearly is now on the dining table. 

you two caught up with each other, of course. with the deal of catching up right after the wedding, you and heeseung—still in your long dress and him in his tux—went around town. heeseung finally got to take you in that field full of flowers he always went to when he misses you too much. now, it’s where you two always go to. you even watched the sunrise and sunset there. you also had the idea of going back to your university, to wear your togas because you two never had a picture together when your batch graduated.

and just like back then, heeseung would drop you off to work as he would go to the hospital and when the day ends, he picks you up and you two would laze around. every day off was spent together, sometimes sunoo and jungwon would drop off, saying you two owe them a lot for doing their best of getting the two of you back together.

eight months later, heeseung’s eyes flutter open as the sun rays have no trouble getting in the room. he sighs, closing his eyes as he turns around, arm extending to your spot. which is empty. heeseung opens his eyes to see the big space of the bed. he sits up, looking around, only seeing the two cats that he impulsively adopted three years ago. “y/n, flower?” heeseung calls, but no answer. no, no, no, no. 

heeseung jumps off the bed, opening the door as he looks around the apartment. you’re not in the living room, not in the kitchen. nowhere. he goes back in the room, opening the closet to see your clothes. where the fuck are you?

“hey,” 

he turns around, seeing you in your pajamas, with his white bathrobe on. you were standing right outside the bathroom. heeseung sighs in relief, running his fingers through his hair. you knew it right away.

“i’m here, i’m sorry.” you say, walking towards him as you pull him in a hug. heeseung wraps his arms around your waist, resting his cheek on your head. “i’m sorry. i’m not going anywhere, okay? never doing that again.”

“i’m sorry.” heeseung softly says. “i trust you, i just really get paranoid.”

“no, no, no. i get you.” you softly say, looking up at him as he looks at you. you press a kiss on his chin and he smiles. “what do you want for breakfast?”

“anything.” he answers.

“anything,” you repeat and he hums. “sunoo’s mint choco—”

“anything, but that.” heeseung cuts you off, making you laugh. “come on, let’s find whatever we can.” he says, holding your hand as he pulls you with him to the kitchen.

“not ramen, okay?” you say and heeseung whines. “we already had ramen yesterday.”

after hours of lazing around, you two went down to the field of flowers to watch the sunset, sitting on the ground where heeseung laid a blanket for you two. you noticed your boyfriend acting weird as he keeps touching the left side of his blazer on the chest area. “seungie,” you call and he hums, subtly touching his chest on the left side. “you okay?”

“yeah, why?” he asks, touching the same spot again and you look at it, then back to him.

“are you sure?” you ask and he nods, kissing your cheek as he pulls you closer to him as you two watch the sun set with the moon on the opposite side. it was getting dark, the skies turning pink. it was always beautiful here around this time, but you couldn’t focus because of your boyfriend being weird.

“yes,” he nervously chuckles. “you? you okay?”

“mhm,” you softly hum. “actually, i’m a bit cold.” you lie through your teeth and heeseung frowns. “can i borrow?” you ask, softly tugging on his blazer to which he removes, but he stops when his hand brushes on the spot that he’s been patting over and over again for the past hour that you’ve been here.

“no,” he says, fixing it back and you look at him weirdly. “can i hug you instead?”

you chuckle, shaking your head as you turn back to the sun. “it’s really beautiful, isn’t it?” you say and heeseung nods, but his eyes weren’t on the sun. they were on you. always on you.

“the best view.” he says and you look at him to see he didn’t even look at the sunset. “i lo-view.” he says, wiggling his eyebrows as he laughs and you try to scowl at him, but the corners of your mouth are lifting up. he touches the left side of his chest again and you look at him. he only smiles at you and you chuckle.

“come here,” you mumble, holding your hands out to which he comes forward, fitting his face in between your hands as he presses his lips against yours. your hands slide up to his hair, softly running through his locks until it decides to rest on heeseung’s nape. heeseung tilts his head to avoid bumping his nose against yours as he rests an arm around your waist and the other hand on your arm.

slowly, your hand comes down to his sternum as you keep kissing him. then, your slowly slide your hand under the blazer to which heeseung immediately grabs your hand before you can even touch what it was he’s been patting.

you giggle against his lips as he keeps kissing you. “no.” was the only thing heeseung said with a chuckle as he kept kissing your lips.

you laugh, but heeseung didn’t stop kissing your lips nor did you pull away and open your eyes. “seungie,” you softly say, giggling. “please?” you sweetly ask and he hums.

“five more minutes,” he says against your lips, moving impossibly closer as he clips your hand in between his knees which makes you laugh louder, but still, he doesn’t stop kissing you. “don’t judge me. you never kissed you.” he mumbles, tilting his head on the other side as he keeps kissing you. “if you did, you would understand.”

as you kiss him back, your free hand attempts to go to his blazer again, but heeseung grabs it right away, intertwining his fingers with yours. “seungie,” you softly giggle, but he still kept kissing you. “honey,” you say and even though you didn’t want to, you pulled away. “come on.” 

“one more?” he says and you shake your head causing him to sigh. “okay, i should just get over it.” he says more to himself, turning to you. “do you think we’re insane for not taking our relationship slow?”

you chuckle. “seungie, we weren’t together for six years. when we said taking things slow, we literally took it to another level.” you say and heeseung chuckles. “we’re doing good right now, right?”

he nods, pressing his lips into a thin line. you look at him to see him keeping his eyes down. you softly sigh, hand reaching out to his blazer. this time, he doesn’t stop you. you reach the inner pocket, feeling the velvet fabric of the small box. you grab it, pulling it out of his blazer as you look at it, then to heeseung who was just avoiding your eyes.

“talked to anyone about this?” you ask.

“jay,” he answers. “and… felix.”

you nod. “what did they say?” you ask.

“we waited for each other for six years, they don’t see a problem with it.” heeseung says and you nod. “but… we never talked about it before and maybe i’m jumping way ahead of you or… maybe we’re moving too fast? i don’t know.”

“what do you think?” you ask.

“i don’t want to do anything if you’re—”

“don’t think about me, heeseung.” you say, shaking your head as you point your finger to him. “what do you think about our relationship? are we moving too fast? slow? what?”

heeseung looks at you, sighing. “i think we’re fine,” he says. “we’re great. we love each other, we fixed everything. you’re my soulmate, you’re my best friend, you’re my missing piece. i… i just feel so great when i’m with you and there’s nothing to wait for, right? you said back then, time doesn’t really matter. what we feel for each other doesn’t increase because of time. it increases because of how safe we feel with each other and how we keep on getting to know each other everyday.” heeseung chuckles nervously, looking at you. “on the practical side, we’re both happy with our jobs, our positions. we’re both financially stable. we’re good, i know that. i know you said not to think about you, but that’s the only missing thing. how do you feel about this?”

you press your lips into a thin line, looking at him. heeseung feels the difficulty in deciphering what you think, but he knows, if you’re not ready, you’ll let him down easy and talk to him properly. because that’s what made you two great, proper communication.

you move, facing him as you get on your knees, sitting on the back of your feet. you take his hand, looking at him as you place the box on his hand. “do it.” you softly say and heeseung looks at you, processing what you just said. you lightly raise your brows and he immediately gets in the same position as you, facing you. 

“i’ve practically said my speech,” heeseung starts and you softly laugh. “but most of the times, i feel scared with every move that i make, in fear of doing something wrong. but with you, i just have to talk to you and i’m just not scared anymore. there are things we know are wrong, but sometimes, we just have to make mistakes to get where we want. and i don’t know where the hell my speech is leading because i don’t feel like i’ve done any mistakes when i’m with you—oh, well, except when i denied my feelings for you.”

you smile at him which made his smile bigger.

“but the moment i admitted my feelings for you, everything fell into place. shit happened and i’m willing to go through them again as long as the other end leads to you.” heeseung says, opening the box and turning the ring to you. “so, would you like to spend the rest of your life with me? you can have this ring as a freebie.”

you and heeseung laugh at his line. “you know ‘will you marry me’? they’re still okay!” you laugh and heeseung joins along, shrugging. “of course, seungie. i would love to spend the rest of my life with you.” you smile and heeseung takes the ring off the box, holding your hand as he slides it with ease on your ring finger. “it fits perfectly.”

“yeah, i secretly measured your finger when you were sleeping.” heeseung says and you giggle. you cup his jaw, pressing your lips against his and heeseung kisses back right away. “you wanna get married now? town hall is just near.” he says against your lips and you laugh, causing him to smile wide.

“you’re crazy.”

“only for you.”

A/N: This is definitely not what I had in mind when I first got the idea to combine these two, I thought that one of the requests would make for some humor! :( Sorry; translations to Spanish are bolded; also, I’ve never written Jake Lockley before so this was kind of hard for me to do

Letting out a tired groan, you lifted your head from the counter to come face to face with Steven Grant smiling down at you symthimaticly.

“Morning, love.” His British accent rang out from above you.

You hummed in return, moving your head back and letting your eyes flutter shut once again.

“Hey, none of that.” A now American accent came from the same place that Steven had just been standing, and you felt a hand lightly slap you upside the head, causing your eyes to fly open.

Snapping your head up, you glared at Marc Spector who smirked down at you slightly, a smallest bit of amusement dancing in his eyes.

“We’ve got work to do, Enamorado.” The accent once again switched, this time to a Spanish one, and Jake Lockley stood with his arms crossed. Then he paused, eyes flitting upwards towards the ceiling slightly, like they always did when he was listening to one of his alters, “Besides, Steven says it’s bad for your back.”

You winched slightly when you realized the man was right, just feeling the regular stabbing pain in your upper back.

After meeting Steven when you had been hired as another gift shop worker at the museum, you both quickly became good friends.

It didn’t take long for you to meet his other personalities, and though they were all very different people, you got on with them well, accepting them all for who they were.

He hummed when he realized that what he said was right, and turned to go to his spot at the counter, his relaxed and cocky stance immediately forming into a slightly hunched over and timid one that you knew to be Stevens.

“Not enough sleep last night?” He asked gently, beginning to reorder some little nick nacks in front of his register.

You shook your head with a sigh, “My back was killing me.” You replied simply, not wanting to go into why it was hurting in the first place, watching as Steven quickly glanced at the closest reflective surface- something he did while talking to his alters.

“Marc’s guessing it’s because you forgot to take your medication again.” He proved your thought when he spoke up.

You winced slightly, this time not from the pain, “Well it’s not like I meant to.” You could practically see Marc roll his eyes at your statement even though he wasn’t fronting.

Before Steven could open his mouth to rebuttal, a voice cut through the almost-silence of the Tuesday morning in the museum, “Stevie! N/n!” Donnas ever so annoying voice practically shrieked as she came into view, carrying a box of new pyramid paper weighs, “What are ya doin’ mopein’ ‘round for?” She looked between the two of you suspiciously, as if one of you were planning on jumping out and turning into a clown at any second.

“Nothing, Donna.” You mumbled, using every last bit of strength you had to not snap at the woman due to your bad mood.

“Ay!” She was the one who snapped, dropping the box on the counter in front of you, “No need to get all snippy with me!” She huffed when you didn’t answer, “Jus’ for that, you can bring these down to the basement.”

With that, she turned on her heels and stalked off in another direction, no doubt going to bother some other poor worker.

“Oh, why that little-“

You looked over with wide eyes as Jake let out a string of words, and even though you didn’t speak Spanish, you had a pretty good idea that none of the words being let out were PG.

Just before he was about to stalk off after the woman, you quickly caught the back of his collar, yanking him back from jumping over the counter.

“Stop it, Jake.” You hissed, “Its fine, I’m just gonna bring this downstairs.”

He turned to look at you, slightly glaring, but you knew it wasn’t directed towards you, “But your back is hurting, let me just do it-“

You cut him off and stood up straighter, “It’s fine, Jake. Besides, someone has to be up here if there’s any customers. And Donna would blow a gasket if she sees that you went instead of me.”

He gave you a bored look and pointedly looked at the entirely empty museum, before looking back at you and rolling his eyes, “Whatever.” He said, then began mumbling things under his breath that you couldn’t quite understand.

With an eyeroll of your own, you leaned forward to pick up the box, wincing ever so slightly as you did so as another pain shot up your back. But if Jake noticed he didn’t show any sign of it.

You brought the box downstairs, with much pain on your part, dumped it on a random table, and made your way back up to your friends.

When you arrived, you immediately noted the stance different from the other two, this one slightly tense as if always ready for a fight to break out. With one foot slightly before the other in a subconsciously guarded stance.

He was munching on some food, which you were one hundred percent sure was from the candies in your gift shop.

“What are you doing, Marc?” You looked at the man suspiciously as you got closer.

He immediately whipped around with wide eyes and a slightly guilty expression, “Nothing.” He denied, his full mouth giving him away.

You let out a sigh, running your hand down your face, “I don’t suppose you paid for that?”

He coughed awkwardly, shuffling his feet as he looked anywhere but you.

“Marc!” You dragged out his name as you groaned, “How many times have we talked about this? You can’t just take food from the shop whenever you want!”

“Well it’s not like anyone else wants them!” He defended, “They taste like shit!”

You stomped over and snatched the bag out of his hands, tossing it into a nearby bin, “You can get Steven fired for that!”

“Speaking of,” He ignored you, already back to messing with some of the Knick nacks around the counter, “Why should Steven get all the credit here? Jake and I have been talking and we both agree that we do more around here then Steven does!”

“Oh my god.”

You loved Marc, you really did. He was one of your best friends. But god he could be annoying.

“You know, I agree with this statement.” Jake then said, choosing to front as he leaned against the counter.

“What are you two lollygagging for?” Donna yet again cut in before you could say anything else.

Jake turned to look at her, unamused.

“Why’re you lookin’ at me like that for?” She demanded, eyes narrowing, clearly not liking the way her employee was looking at her.

He answered before you could step in and tell him it was a bad idea, “You just made Y/n carry a heavy box downstairs even though you know about her chronic back pains.”

Donna appeared to be too focused on the fact that he had talked back to her, to even notice that the man had a completely different accent then normal.

“You’ve got no right talking to me like that, Stevie.” Her eyes were narrowed, and you could practically feel the dangerous shift in Jake's mood.

“What did you just say?” He asked angrily, and you didn’t even need to hear Steven and Marc to know that one of them was trying to calm the man down while the other just sat back and watched with a laugh.

“Listen, Donna, maybe we should just-“ You tried, only for her to turn her glare to you.

“Oi! I wasn’t speaking to you!”

That seemed to set the men over the edge, “Oh that’s it.” It was Marc’s American accent now.

Just as he was about to lunge over the desk, you quickly caught the back of his collar and yanked him back, ignoring his efforts to fight free from your grip.

“Okay, you two need to go take- like- a chill pill.” Donna said in disgust, “Go take a twenty minute break and come back to me when you’re done.”

You didn’t need to be told twice, not letting go of Marc’s collar just in case as you dragged him along until you were both out the museum doors.

As soon as you let go of him, Steven stood in his place, seeming to shrink under your gaze, “What were they thinking?” You hissed at him, “They could’ve gotten you fired! All day you’ve been doing things that could!”

Steven shrugged, fidgeting with his hands, and you signed, running a hand down your face, even though you knew for the most part it wasn’t him.

Suddenly, pain exploded in your upper back and you let out a little grunt, hand flying up to the area and Stevens expression morphed into one of horror and worries.

“Are you okay? What’s wrong? What can I do to help?” His words came out rushed, and even though you appreciated how much he cared, you waved him off.

“I’m fine, Steven.”

He looked at you suspiciously before being the one to sigh, “Come on, Marc suggested that we go get you your medicine.”

Wincing slightly, you nodded your head, “Yeah, that might be a good idea.” You agreed.

As the four of you walked away, you couldn’t help the feeling of relief that washed over you. You had three of the best friends in the world that you could have. People you knew would watch after you and take care of you for as long as they could.

And even though they were a lot to handle sometimes, you loved them.

they all anticipated on which i-lander will be the second placer with the score of 85. all of them looked at the screen and waited. then, eunji's picture was shown.

[zico] eunji did well again, i enjoyed the part where she waved. i was like "oh, the duality".

[doobu] i can say she has a great confidence whenever she perform.

[rain] her dance break also, i don't know that she can move like that. she always dance elegantly but today, it was powerful and cool.

the moment when sunoo was revealed the third one to be eliminated, eunji immediately looked at him. she was so shocked and sad as well, thinking that sunoo deserves to stay in i-land. eunji was also surprised when jungwon was the last person to be eliminated.

[eunji] i'm not expecting this...

[sunoo] it's fine, noona. i'm fine.

eunji hugged sunoo as he cried, it really breaks her heart. she watched sunoo and jaebeom as they also hugged each other then bid a farewell.

[eunji] come back again here like what you did last time, okay? you should take care of yourself there, sunoo.

[sunoo] take care of yourself too, noona. i'll get going.

sunoo nodded then bid farewell again to his friends before walking through the gate with the other dropouts. eunji's just trying really hard to hold her tears but when sunoo disappeared on her sight, those tears suddenly dropped continuously. sunghoon noticed that and hugged eunji.

"it's fine, sunoo will definitely come back. don't worry." sunghoon said then patted her back as she bursts into tears.

eunji hugged jay with full of happiness, he chuckled then hugged her back. their hug took a few seconds before jay ruffled her hair.

eunji agreed as the song for the vocal unit was revealed, it was bts' butterfly. she thought that she really wants to do it to prove herself.

jungwon clung onto heeseung and eunji at the same time. indirectly saying that the two of them should be the vocal representatives. eunji smiled lightly as she tried to hide her emotions.

[sunghoon] i recommend eunji, jaebeom hyung, geonu hyung and heeseung hyung.

all of the i-landers were gathered to decide on who'll be the two vocal representatives.

[k] what can you say about that, eunji?

[jay] i think eunji needs to be on vocal unit.

[jaebeom] yeah, i agree on that.

[eunji] oh... as how much you trust me, i'll do my best as one of the vocal representative and get a good score.

all of them clapped at eunji's remarks and decided to make her one of the vocal unit.

late at night, eunji and heeseung were practicing together. they sang bts' butterfly and taking it seriously. while singing, eunji felt something on her throat. it was scratchy but since she's still producing a good sound, she shrugged it off. later on, her throat became so scratchy that she needs to pause on singing and cough.

[heeseung] are you fine?

[eunji] i'm fine, oppa. don't worry.

[heeseung] i think we should sleep already, it's late at night. let's just practice tomorrow.

[eunji] i got so nervous and frustrated when my throat is not feeling well all night. i thought that it was really something serious.

eunji was spacing out while eating dinner with the other i-landers. she was thinking about her throat's condition that is worsened.

[seon] eunji, you're spacing out again.

[jay] i thought you're sleeping with your eyes open.

eunji who's deep in thoughts accidentally ignored them and continue to eat her meal. jay and seon looked at each other as they were puzzled by eunji's behavior.

after their dinner, eunji decided to practice alone instead of being with heeseung. her vocals already got affected when she sang with a slightly raspy voice. she was so shocked and nervous that time.

that night too, she decided to talk with geonu and heeseung at the lobby. the two were confused on what's happening.

[eunji] i... i think i can't do it. my throat hurts so much and i don't think i able to perform with this condition.

Lady & Peebles and You Made Me airing back to back (at least on streaming services) is such an interesting pair because they’re both PB-centric episodes that have...opposing viewpoints of her scientific mind, almost. Lady & Peebles shows her reliance on gadgets and ends with her besting someone in hand to hand combat BECAUSE her scientific mind gives her the upper hand, and then You Made Me turns around and goes “your science made this problem, figure it out”. She does, in the end, give Lemongrab a friend, realizing the bitter qualities she instilled in him (as you’ve discussed before with her creating him being an accidental mirror of her own bad traits), which is an emotional answer...but it’s still helped along by science allowing her to create life. And then there’s her outfits for them, which creates a huge visual disparity between the two episodes! A cute pink parka and science long johns for L&P, and then what I can only describe as a 1950s mom look for YMM. There’s a lot happening in both of these episodes for her and I think s4 was when all of these ideas were coalescing into a more concrete, multifaceted character, which is neat to see happen (again. Lol I’ve watched this season too much) Thoughts, O Adventure Time expert and fellow PB Appreciator?

Woop! This is a fun analysis to wake up to! 

You’re right, season 4 is when they really took a step up with Peebles. 

Adam Muto said that the crew were afraid they were writing the same stories with Finn and Jake all the time. So they changed the status quo up by having Finn find a new love interest, and started working on other characters, even having eps that don’t even feature Finn and Jake at all. 

Princess Bubblegum was one of the many beneficiates of this change in focus, and the most immediate. There are a large number of season 4 eps designed to build her character up from Finn’s unrequited love interest into the mad scientist dictator she was always meant to be - “Goliad”, “Princess Cookie”, “Burning Low”, “Lady & Peebles”, “You Made Me”, “Reign of Gunthers”, and finally “The Lich”. And what’s incredible is every single one of these episodes shows a completely different side to her, as visually demonstrated by how she wears different costumes - different “masks” - in each of them. The use of outfits as “masks” would persist with Bubblegum’s character for the rest of the show,  including some heavy symbolism in the finale itself and Obsidian. 

For example, PB dressed like a mother in You Made Me, and she dressed like a goofy teen in Sky Witch, but in neither episode did she choose those outfits because that was what she knew she was doing. It was all coincidental, in-universe.

Through costume design the writers explore different aspects of their characters, and can make them feel like completely different people on an episode-by-episode basis. This really helped the characters translate to the audience.

So you’re right. This is when things started coalescing together. The crew had a fun character to work with who they had neglected for the previous 2 seasons, and damn, they took that bull by the horns straight away. They were also able to write a lot more stories than before, so this was a good time for her.    

This would continue in season 5.... but not under Pen Ward - Pen left the show, but he was still working on the videogame about PB’s origin. When Adam Muto took over, he greenlit 3 episode concepts by Jesse Moynihan that were written about Princess Bubblegum - “The Suitor”, “Wizards Only, Fools”, and “The Vault”. He and the writing team also put together “Sky Witch” and gave that to Jmoyns/Acasta too because why not, they were doing a great job. 

Anyway it’s at this point you begin to see the writers taking different approaches. Jesse (and Ako) liked to focus on Peebles as an individual.  But Tom Herpich wrote episodes that focused on her relationship to others, like her citizens and Lemongrab - this is where Peebles as a “god figure” was mostly written in, especially since Tom wrote “Goliad” way back in season 4 as his first ever story concept that got approved, and he also worked on “You Made Me”.  And finally, Cole Sanchez and Andy Ristaino usually worked on the eps that focused more on her darkest decisions as leader - “Rattleballs”, “James”, “The Cooler”, ”Hoots”. (They didn’t conceptualize those eps, they just happened to board them.) 

In season 7 everything kind of settled down and rather than having entirely different sides of her personality about in each ep, she was written as a bit more consistent from then on. I mean, Peebles in Bonnie and Neddy>Varmints>Stakes>Broke his Crown>The Thin Yellow Line all still feel like very different sides to her character, but there are consistent elements across all those eps. Those elements relate back to the events of The Cooler and the season 6 finale - being more careful and considerate of others after scaring away her citizens and friends.  

But then in season 10 you got some of that wackiness back. Like in “Blenanas”, which could not feel any more different from “Gumbaldia”, despite both eps dealing with the same subject matter of preparing for the war. Then in “come along with me” and “Obsidian” she is literally written by 4 different board teams in each, so all the characters get a shift in how they’re presented in each eighth of the episodes!

OKAY SO remember how i said i was considering buying the librarians box set? well, i bought it and i’ve been working my way through for... a few weeks now? maybe a month. i’m like three episodes into s2 (i skipped around this season a little because i wanted to show lesbean the time loop episode) and like. hmm. i have Thoughts and i’m gonna Express Them now.

my younger self didn’t realize it, but cassandra is REALLY VERY BI, isn’t she?? the women in the fairy tale story. the way she looks at lamia when she’s holding the apple. the implication that librarian!cass slept with eve. the implication that she IS sleeping with lamia. the way she gets the italian baroness’ number without even TRYING. god that’s gay. i love john rogers.

cassandra/ezekiel remains my favorite component of the ot3. he carries around a HANDKERCHIEF for her in late s1 when her nosebleeds are getting bad. that’s CANON. i just have to DEAL with that knowledge. and like, he steals her that statue in the science fair episode, and guides her in the labyrinth, and the way they’re so effortlessly a team by the occult college episode is my FAVORITE THING IN THE WORLD

jake/ezekiel has Big Repression Energy and i need, i NEED ezekiel to hold jake’s face in his hands after he has a near miss. i need it for SCIENCE. it’s SO GOOD. the POTENTIAL.

baby me kind of disliked jake/cassandra, i think because i cared about the ot3 and/or cassandra/ezekiel a lot and i didn’t like how they were being sidelined. or maybe i just didn’t like how ezekiel was being sidelined. either way, i acted HASTILY. they’re still my least favorite component relationship but there’s some GOOD STUFF in there. the way jake takes her word for it during the tesla episode, even when it might doom his newest girlfriend? in the season where they’re having trust issues? god, poetic cinema! give me more of cassandra saying something and the guys IMMEDIATELY accepting it because it’s cass and they trust her and i’m upset about it

flynn so clearly has adhd that i can’t believe it’s not canon. also evlynn is the CUTEST thing and i NEED more of that running joke where every time they have a ~moment~, flynn has a realization. it’s so funny to me but also, like, mumble mumble something about how eve inspires him? or something? it’s GOOD is what i’m saying.

I AM EVEN MORE EMO ABOUT HIM THAN I WAS LAST TIME. also sidenote they are NOT trying to hide his identity it’s kind of delicious. highlights include: jenkins is good friends with santa claus and mrs. claus, jenkins drops his pitcher of water when someone mentions dulaque, jenkins knows a Suspicious Amount of arthur lore in the first episode, and jenkins actually LAUGHS when eve says “maybe dulaque falling out a plane killed him?” and says “it takes a lot more than falling out of a plane to kill u-- him. dulaque.”

A L S O THAT MORGAN LE FAY REVEAL IS LITERALLY THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD. THOSE KINDS OF REVEALS ARE MY FAVORITE AND I’M KIND OF OBSESSED WITH THE IDEA THAT JENKINS AND MORGAN AND DULAQUE HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF YEARS NAVIGATING AROUND EACH OTHER.

SPN 2x21 “All Hell Breaks Loose (1)”

This cafe is so ridiculously tiny; I love it.

If the boys have been actively looking for Ava this whole time, they could have stood to mention it more than once immediately after the first time she appeared.

Oh, that’s right, we’ve got Lily, who’s canonically a lesbian and is destined for death. (Apparently the anime, which I never have got around to watching, retcons her killing her girlfriend into killing her roommate. Classy. I mean yeah that’s one less dead lesbian, but also now zero lesbians exist in the story, so not sure that’s a win.)

Honestly Psychic Kid Showdown the best kind of reality show, and all the demons (and probably the angels too) are sitting around with popcorn watching. It’s Kid Nation, but they all have powers and are supposed to kill each other.

Seeing Jake’s military uniform reminded me of a question I’ve had before, why the flag patches are backwards. A quick google tells me they’re backward on the right side so the appearance is that the flags and flowing in the breeze as the person walks forward. Makes sense; asked and answered.

Sure do extremely hate that the queer character is the first one to die and was at least made to look like she killed herself. Hate that.

Wait, Ash is really dead? I could’ve sworn he was around for longer. Then again I’ve binged 17 episodes in two days so maybe it was longer than it felt.

Warning: This is trippy af. It's loosely based on the story of Pygmalion and Galatea. Don't worry, no drug is involved, Jake just decides to trip his balls reading a script.

Pairing: Jake Gyllenhaal x imaginary lover

Summary: If her eyes were beautiful, she didn't have the right nose or the right lips. If she had an ideal body shape, her voice was off by ten miles. If he found nothing to complain about her appearance, then her acting was atrocious. And when she succeeded in capturing the essence of the role? He saw nothing but a blasphemous mockery of HER image.

"Jake, you have to make up your mind."

"About?"

The director pinches the creases between his eyebrows and lets out a long sigh. He lays down a list of names in front of the actor. These are the actresses who have auditioned for the leading female role. Jake takes a look through the names and the written notes next to them. Many of the names are unfamiliar, but some stand out. Either they are famous in the industry, or he has worked with them before.

"I think I've made myself clear about this."

Jake tries to be as polite as possible, but he almost can't hide his displeasure. None of these women fits the role. The director starts to regret letting him take part in the casting process. But since the actor is also the EP who single-handedly finances this whole production, he couldn't say no to Jake's request.

"Jake, I'm going to be blunt. You're being difficult."

"No, I'm being thorough. You know how important this project is to me."

Jake stands up from his chair and takes long strides outside. He needs to get some fresh air. He finds himself just as annoyed and frustrated as the other man. The actor buries his face into his hands. He exhales, trying to relieve the stress.

Jake knows it's unfair of him to reject everyone like the way he did. Some of the auditions were genuinely great, but none feels right for him. There is always something amiss. If her eyes were beautiful, she didn't have the right nose or the right lips. If she had an ideal body shape, her voice was off by ten miles. If he found nothing to complain about her appearance, then her acting was atrocious. And when she succeeded in capturing the essence of the role? He saw nothing but a blasphemous mockery of HER image.

Her.

His eyes strain on the actress in front of him, trying to take in everything. He can hear her voice, but he cannot pay attention to the words. The resemblance is too striking. Her face, even down to the imperfections, looks like it has been carved out from the script. Her voice seeps into his mind like the sweetest nectar, exactly how he has imagined it. And her body. God, what he wouldn't give to hold her in his arms, to feel the warmth of her body against his.

After finishing her line, the actress turns her head and meets his intense gaze. Jake swallows his guilt. He feels like he has defiled her with the way he looks at her, but she doesn't look like she was offended. And then she smiles at him. A jolt of shock runs down Jake's spine.

Jake springs from his bed. His shirt is damp, his ears are ringing, and there is a terrible thumping in his chest. The script slightly crumples under the weight of this hand. He must have fallen asleep reading it last night.

"You feeling alright?"

The actor quietly shakes his head. The director pats Jake on his slouching back. He has agreed to reassess some of the auditions in the hope of finding something. Jake has no clue what he wants to find, but he's even more miserable than before.

That night wasn't the only time she appears. Since then, she has frequently come to him in his dream. Sometimes she is a nobody actress auditioning for the role. Sometimes he sees them both on the set talking to each other, though he can never remember what she says. But the worst ones are the nightmares of him sitting alone in the dark auditorium, watching her on the silver screen. Her images fill his vision as she wraps her arms around "him", and "Jake" has her in his embrace as well.

"I understand, I do. But don't let this get to your head, Jake."

He knows what his colleague is going to say next. Jake shuts his eyes as if that would also block the words out of his mind. He doesn't want to hear it. He doesn't want to accept it, even though he knows how irrational it may be.

"She isn't real, Jake. She's just a..."

"I love her."

If it has gotten to this point, he doesn't care anymore. It was a bad idea to confide his feelings to the director. He soon understood nobody could understand. How can they? It is too bizarre to claim he is in love with a fictional character. Even Jake knows that, but he cannot stop loving her, cannot stop yearning for her. And every day, he has to wake up with the realization that she doesn't exist. That is the true nightmare.

"That makes no fucking sense."

The other man scoffed as he pushes a glass of brow liquid toward Jake. How does anyone expect him to respond to that?

"I loved her against reason."

Jake mumbles, hiding his face on the bar table. The rest of his words is unintelligible.

"Excuse me? Was that Charles Dickens?"

Jake doesn't respond. He has finally lost it. The director thinks to himself as he downs the whole shot of whiskey, then proceeds to pour himself another. This project will most likely get scraped if they cannot agree on the leading actress. And while he has a few names in mind, it's useless if Jake refuses to work with her.

"Hey, why did you write her that way?"

It takes a moment for the director to register that Jake was talking about the script.

"I thought I told you already, did you forget? I didn't write it."

Jake lifts his face. It seems he did forget about something like that. The director never repeated that piece of information because he didn't think anyone would care. After all, it's not like they're stealing from anyone, they're still going to give the writer proper credit.

"A friend of mine wrote it. I read the script and immediately thought of you, it's like it was written with you in mind, Jake. So I made an offer and told her I would try to get you onboard."

"And?"

"She was thrilled, but when I asked her to come here. She declined."

Just when the director is about to take another sip of whiskey, Jake grabs his shoulders. The actor starts bombarding him with questions. Half of those questions may have been too private for him to answer. He may have told Jake that she is currently in this city to work on another of her projects. And he may also have blurted out she's renting his apartment. Jake rushes out of the bar, grabs his coat, and stumbles a few times on the way.

He finds himself standing across the street, looking at a moderately sized apartment building. He kind of regrets now. For all he knows, this has only been a hazy daydream for him. What if she looks nothing like the woman from his dream, which is most likely the case? Maybe he has had one too many drinks. Maybe he should go now before someone thinks he's a stalker.

As Jake moves his feet, planning on leaving, he hears a burst of familiar laughter coming from the other side of the road. He frantically looks for the source of it, and there he finds her. She is greeting the doorman, her back facing him. He can only see the outline of her cheeks and jawline, and the body frame that's well hidden underneath a thick winter coat.

But that's enough.

Jericho Thoughts

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh

okay so. i’m rewatching jericho. i first watched it sometime around 8th-9th grade, I think maybe somewhere in the first half of 2014. I basically remembered this: the main character was the black sheep of the family, he came back to town, and atomic bombs destroyed most of the US, and the show was about the town dealing with the aftermath. the guy from continuum and one ep of flashpoint played a character i liked named dale (eric knudsen) who liked a popular girl who ended up befriending him, and the asking-for-flowers flashpoint ep guy was the responsible brother. Someone used to be a teacher. The main character looked like Skeet Ulrich, but i didn’t know who that was, just the name.

turns out the main character WAS Skeet Ulrich, and 2 characters (heather and emily) used to be teachers, and i apparently forgot almost all of the major characters. I’ve been rewatching it with the knowledge of which characters die, so that’s good. the show is really good, and it’s really intense. I’m almost done, and it’s tough to keep watching both because it’s so intense and because i know a character i like is about to die tragically. 

watching this show makes me so TENSE. i think it really got bad when goetz showed up and i knew bonnie’s death was coming up. i’ve been watching the same episode for like an hour and i started 6 minutes in from another viewing. i don’t know why i’m so stressed. well actually i do it’s because things in this show are AWFUL but i know that no one dies after bonnie.

i also really like that the plot is very much what drives the show. romantic relationships somewhat matter (eric/april/mary, dale/skylar, and stanley/mimi in particular get screentime, while jake’s relationships with emily and heather are there and meaningful but not something that drives the story or gets a lot of attention. dale and eric’s relationships have also been less important in season 2) but they are regularly sidelined while the character deal with the latest crisis. characters have backstories that aren’t always super expanded on, like johnston’s chaotic neutral dad or stanley and bonnie’s parents, because they don’t have a meaningful impact on the plot- how mimi grew up isn’t going to change how the Greens deal with food shortages. 

also, i love that it’s a post-apocalyptic show where there’s a lot of fighting and lawlessness and not once have they used rape as a plot device. the closest it ever came to being mentioned was when maggie, a survivor pretending to be military to get towns’ supplies, said that ‘out there, men only want women for one thing’ and that’s IT. i respect that so much. way too many shows and books and movies are like ‘things are bad... and we can only express that through rape’ but this show never does

also the grey morality is very well done in season 1 (the bad guys are clearer in season 2). characters fight and do shitty things because everyone is just trying to survive. Constantino was wrong to start a war with Jericho, but i also understand where he was coming from. Ravenwood ransacked New Bern and left them with almost nothing, and Jericho never bothered to warn them. There were some people considering not honoring the deal to repay the windmills in food. New Bern was on the brink of destruction and Constantino tried to get the resources for survival where he could, by force. The thing with the refugees too. There isn’t really enough food for everyone, and it’s true that Jericho’s been getting a lot of refugees when it’s barely managing to sustain its own population. Some of the refugees have been stealing from them, and sometimes you have to make tricky decisions to survive. But the refugees are also probably going to die if they get sent away, and understandably they cannot accept that. they’ve been stealing food to prepare for this possibility, and they are willing to be violent to secure their place because jericho is much better off than just about anywhere else and they don’t want to die. Roger gets in a fight with Gray and accidentally shoots him, but then actively chooses to hold him at gunpoint and refuse him medical help unless he guarantees the safety of the other refugees. That’s obviously awful- but he’s also trying to protect the lives of the 50 innocent people he brought here. In the end, the refugees get to stay because some Jericho residents volunteer to share their rations, but Roger does not because he obviously committed a terrible crime. He’s not a bad person, but of course he can’t just be forgiven and integrated back into Jericho like nothing happened, and he accepts that and leaves with only a gun from Jake to protect himself because at least the others and emily will be safe. 

also that emily and roger’s relationship wasn’t made meaningless in order to further her relationship with jake even despite their history as high school sweethearts.

oh god i just watched the scene where stanley’s talking to bonnie in the morgue and it’s so well done and i’m just in bed crying- not sobbing or anything, but plenty of tears. i don’t know what the last show to make me cry like this was; i’ve been watching so much youtube that i haven’t been watching a lot of hard hitting shows lately i guess. Barry was extremely Fucked Up, that might have made me cry, but it might not have- it had me fucked up for weeks, but i don’t know if i cried.

anyway the scene with stanley and bonnie in the morgue is so good. Stanley talking to her like she’s still alive the way they always did for their parents, and talking to her sign language bc that’s her language. Telling her to say hi to their parents. Letting her know that mimi is still alive, that she succeeded in protecting her, and thanking her for it. Still joking around a little even though he’s obviously heartbroken and just being so genuine with her. Neither of them deserved this. 

wow can’t believe heather is a fuckin bootlicker, knowing that the government is extremely corrupt and that she and beck are destroying new bern and choosing to continue to work for that government.

oh beck just has to be some sort of a stupid son of a bitch. absolute goddamn buffoon. siding with the govt, arresting jake in the shadiest way possible in the middle of a crowd, choosing to torture jake (which if he knew a goddamn thing like hawkins did he would know was ineffective), and then thinking that after everything this town and those rangers have done to protect themselves and their loved ones that it was just going to work out for him like the others aren’t going to come for jake immediately and efficiently. i liked beck well enough before but any fondness or respect for him is fucking absolutely gone.

at least eric is really getting to show off his leadership skills now. johnston’s dead, jake’s been arrested/kidnapped, hawkins is busy with other shit. eric’s always one of the second-in-commands but this is one of the few times he’s just plain in command.

January 27: Thoughts on The 100 2x09, Remember Me

...For some reason I was really angry at the beginning of this? Also there’s a lot of Lxa bashing. Sorry. And some Clarke criticism but in the latter case, I mean it well.

Also this is really long whoops.

So...I miss when killing off main characters was a big deal and people actually reacted to it.

I truly cannot take Lxa seriously I’m sorry. I don’t find her... intimidating at all.

I’ve already complained repeatedly about her complete bad faith deal making at every turn so I won’t go into it again but nevertheless, here she is, again, moving the goal posts of the negotiation. ‘I’ll withdraw my army if you cure the Reapers. No, if you give up your friend. No, if you give me his body.’ Clarke should have double crossed her immediately.

Also I know that I ultimately did think it was reasonable for Finn to face Grounder justice (except insofar as that justice was itself morally untenable--that is, the Torture Porn) but now that he’s dead, I think there’s no real moral argument to be made that the Grounders deserve his body. I understand their traditions, which in fact I found quite moving when I first watched this ep, but surely his people have, or could make up, some traditions for his burial also. He is still their friend. This seems like little more than an excuse to be cruel. And Clarke’s so fucking broken she just goes with it. It’s truly awful. I mean she’s doing the only thing she can do I guess but it’s laughable that she sounds as if she has any sort of upper hand, you’re getting played bitch.

(Yeah I know, Lxa is being ‘groundbreaking’ and ‘revolutionary’ by even semi-accepting capital punishment without torture and taking his body is a way of appeasing her harder line advisers but like cry me a river--she’s either the all powerful commander or she’s fucking not.)

“We want the same things.” Lol if you wanted the same things you would have stuck to the original deal. No I’m not over this at all I guess.

I also still can’t get over how Clarke has literally never earned true leadership in the eyes of her own people and yet she continues to be randomly viewed as a leader by the Grounders and thus retains pretty much full de facto control over her own people’s power structure.

Also Kane shut the fuck up. I completely forgot about this but they really did put him through an off-screen 180 where all of a sudden Lxa is a God to him and can literally do nothing wrong and to this day we have never been given an explanation how that came to be. Guess it’s easier to tell not show huh?!?

ALSO I get we’re suppose to see a sort of racism-corollary to lines like “I don’t think they know what peace is” like obviously this rubs one the wrong way automatically. But Abby’s not really wrong. And despite what Kane thinks, Lxa has given, again, NO indication at all that she is interested in peace. She has given a lot of indications that she wants to do whatever she can to wring as much from the Sky People as she can without giving anything in return and hey we’re only halfway through the season and she’s already psychologically broken Clarke (also the only person she acknowledges as the leader even though she is not, cannot emphasize this enough, the leader of anything... and thus the only person L really has to break) and sunk-cost-fallacy-ed her into submission. Now that Finn is dead Clarke would cut off her own tit to make Lxa happy because anything else is “letting him die in vain.”

I understand the positions of both Clarke and Raven in this scene, which is fucking brutal, but I sympathize more with Raven. Clarke’s basically just a messenger, but what the Grounders are demanding is (I know I already said it) cruel, and cruel to Raven above all. And Clarke is almost all business. I think that’s what she needs to be for herself but it’s not helpful to the situation.

Anyway here are my faves in Mount Weather. It’s almost hard to watch these scenes because I want to, like, memorize them. Partially for the C/M story and partially just because. Today’s adventure is getting to a radio to send a message to the Ark-wide channel, which is a term for a thing that exists. Also I forgot how snarky everyone / Miller was to Maya. Which, I get. But--are they not thinking about how her own people have experimented on her? Like she is expendable to them, this is just a known fact at this time. So yes, there is a real risk to her, Nathan.

“Oh, is that all?” / “No--there’s more.” Monty’s so one-track he didn’t even hear the sarcasm. I love him.

“Their army has been getting their ass kicked by Mount Weather forever.” Bellamy speaking the truth. Do they need the alliance, or do they just need the Grounders to back the fuck off from attacking them? (Spoiler: they do not need the alliance.)

Ah Bellarke, always quick to reassure each other. Blindly, even.

“Since I don’t take orders from you, I’m going to need a better reason” is one of my favorite lines, and underrated. Finally someone reminding Clarke she’s not actually in charge of everyone and everything all the time. (I realize this sounds like I dislike Clarke. I don’t. I just find certain traits of hers frustrating. But this just makes her a good character.) Also you can see that, rather like her moment with Raven, she falls back on being business like and direct and issuing orders to avoid talking about feelings or breaking apart.

The United States War Room survives the apocalypse.

I’m sorry but it’s ridiculous to think that Lxa invented the concept of an alliance lol.

I guess Clarke needs to go all in on the alliance because of Finn, but... I also think this is part of who she is. Her sense of practicality outweighs any human desire to hold a grudge, and I think she assumes a level of practicality in others too, automatically, such that she underestimates wariness in others. Like Bellamy and Gustus and everyone is right to be uncertain about this literally hours-old alliance--not even an official alliance, since L’s latest demand hasn’t technically been met!--and Clarke’s like ‘yeah I’ll sleep next to people who would have killed me six hours ago np!’ because now that she’s in, she’s in. She’s neither angry nor afraid.

I know Raven is made to look kind of wan and sunken and sad but yet this scene where she’s being disarmed is honestly like peak hotness for me and I don’t know why. I like my women sullen and covered in knives?

Interesting how allegedly only the warriors knew English and yet Lxa’s big announcement re: get in line with me or die is made in English. Just going to point out yet again what a big mistake that throwaway S1 line is.

What a sad life to lead, where random declarations followed by “or death” have to form the entirety of your belief system “Don’t be upset that your wife and child are dead...or I’ll beat you to a pulp.” I truly don’t understand how we were ever supposed to get in line with this society as sympathetic or interesting. So much so that they get a whole prequel I guess???

I’d rather have a Mount Weather prequel except not really, don’t ruin it for me.

I love Miller’s canonical insane superhuman strength. This is a trait often overlooked in fics.

The usual comment on Mount Weather scenes: I love all of it.

The thing is that if everyone were on board with the funeral ceremony, it is touching. Murderer and murdered together, and the people who’ve been hurt, on both sides, saying goodbye as a group. It’s just that Clarke’s people were coerced into this--they weren’t convinced it would be a fitting ceremony, just told ‘well this is how it is and if you don’t like it, we could perhaps... KILL YOU?”

Is this a new revelation that Mount Weather crashed the Exodus ship (still a really satisfying belated explanation imo)? Or did we know that because, unlike Monty et al, we knew about the jamming signals already? Can’t remember.

You can see how L came to believe what she believes but nevertheless this is bad advice lol. “Don’t care about other people.” Okay, I’ll just stop doing that then.

Kane (handing over pure space moonshine probably): Just don’t drink too much of it. Clarke (five minutes later): Guzzles whole bottle at once. #partygriff is officially canon.

Waiting until tomorrow to start the war? Procrastinators. Clarke didn’t kill Finn for this.

I love Certified Dramatic Ho Bellamy knocking the cup out of Clarke’s hand even though she had made no move whatsoever to drink it.

“When you plunged your knife into the heart of the boy you loved, did you not wish that it was mine.” Lxa, also a certified Dramatic Ho.

Clarke kinda deserved to be punched in the face given that it wouldn’t actually make sense for Raven to try to poison Lxa--and make Finn’s death mean nothing? And put them all in danger in enemy territory? Nonsense. Nevertheless it’s hard not to feel bad for her when she follows this accusation up with a psychotic break.

Hmmm, do I think Abby turning in Jake was the same as Clarke killing Finn? Not really. She didn’t directly kill Jake, that was Jaha, and Jaha is who Clarke should really be mad at. That said, I don’t think she was really saving anyone in the direct way Clarke was. So, apples and oranges. Crazy awkward moment to bring it up, though lol. “Oh Clarke, you’ll feel better eventually--remember that time I killed your Dad? I got over that! Wait--does talking about your dead father upset you? That’s a surprise!” Nevertheless I appreciate major actions having consequences as that’s a semi-rarity on this show.

Monty Green: hero.

“Lxa needs this alliance as much as we do.” - True, if she intends to get her people out of MW. “She’s shown herself to be flexible.” - Not true. She’s given the bare minimum of concessions. Kane, please crawl back out of her colon for like 5 seconds, get some air.

Interesting that Raven and Bellamy are chilling near each other. I wonder what they were discussing. Tbh Bellamy’s feelings on everything in this episode are rather opaque. Other than understanding why Clarke mercy-killed Finn and being skeptical of the alliance.

“Kill one person and destroy the alliance” is literally only merciful because the default in this society is “kill everyone all the time for any reason.” Like, I guess??? That’s mercy by comparison?? But forgive me if I am not moved to admiration.

“This time justice will be done” says the woman who used the barest sliver of evidence to decide that a random person was guilty so she could have a public execution. A public execution to replace the other public execution, in fact, not to avenge a death because Gustus isn’t dead. (Yet.)

Kane’s really okay with letting Raven be tortured to death, huh? Gah he’s fucking annoying.

Bellarke: Crime Solving Duo. That’s some satisfying teamwork. Clarke figures out how the scheme worked. Bellamy figures out who’s behind the scheme. With all the evidence put together, the motive becomes clear. (Honesty, they should have been suspicious that the poison not only didn’t kill Gustus, it barely harmed him lol.)

Check out all the Department of Homeland Security stuff on Monty’s computer. This is perhaps Dante’s log in? There’s a set of “personal” files too. And a set of President’s Office files, which one would assume not everyone would have.

Anyway, I have a Thing for tense sequences of hackers...hacking.

When I first watched this season I was often so tense my whole body hurt and it’s mostly because of MW scenes like this one where Monty is caught. Like aaaaah it still gets me. He almost makes it... and then almost makes it again, with his silly little salute... (Never forget that he is A Dork.)

On the one hand, Raven being tortured and then seeing Gustus tortured to death allows her to see why Clarke killing Finn was an act of mercy, to forgive her, and to move on, so the narrative can continue with them as allies and nominal friends. And it works, basically. But I also think there’s something to the theory that they were never the same, that the wound never really healed.

I’m sorry but Octavia’s face when Clarke’s like “Yeah B, you’re expendable, go get yourself killed, have a map!!” is hilarious. Like, he’s just said that Gustus doing anything for Lxa made sense, and Octavia responded with “Look at the thanks he got” which seems to me like She Knows and then 5 seconds later Bellamy is basically thrown away by the person we all know he’d do anything for... I mean the face is fair. Also this is Bellamy’s idea and it’s a good idea and so he was right before and Clarke is also right now, but it’s still so... annoying.... like “okay, I’m done caring about you lol bye.”

And Raven’s just totally confused. It’s been a damn long day I guess.

Why are they all such fucking hotties? It’s hard to pay attention to “the plot.”

So the ashes Abby tries to give to Clarke are the same ashes, perhaps, that Jasper scatters in S3? This vial looks smaller. Why did she not immediately give them to Raven? That would seem to be the obvious thing to do.

And here we see Clarke, under L’s direct influence, becoming Increasingly Insufferable. I love her but this is obviously supposed to be her descent into the abyss: she treats her friends like little expendable minions, she turns her back on Finn’s memory, and then she ends the episode by dramatically walking into a dark room in slow motion to creepy chamber music. I mean this is the hero’s fall guys!! That’s what it always was!!!

If only they’d handled Bellamy’s hero’s fall in 3A, and Clarke’s rise again in 3B, as well.

That ending is a straight up horror movie thanks that’s why this is my favorite season.

i’d love to hear you talk about SU’s problems if you have any more thoughts on it? some of the concepts from the show are brilliant and original, but i can never put my finger on what makes the “daily lives” ones so boring to watch. especially when they’re supposed to enhance the show’s themes and establish the backstory of what the main cast’s fighting for

@steakbatter I am SO sorry it took me over a month to answer this. It took a LOT of thinking to come up with anything. So here’s my main thesis: Adventure Time is primarily a slice of life show, and moreso than anything else I feel like the intent of most of their episodes is to create a Feeling. The specifics of what happens in your average adventure time episode don’t matter - most of  them have what I’d almost call a monster of the week type format. 

By contrast, Steven Universe is a show that has no footing without it’s overarching plot. Steven Universe has somewhere it’s going from the very beginning well established, whereas adventure time just sort of shambles mindlessly towards storyline. And this makes a HUGE difference because it’s the precedent for tone.

In Burning Low (S4E16) we see Finn have a huge confrontation with bubblegum, and he and flame princess get badly injured, and almost die. The episode that immediately follows it - BMO Noire (S4E17) is about BMO roleplaying as a detective to find Finn’s missing sock. This doesn’t bother me at all because the precedent of Adventure Time is a slow build - smaller bits of character development slipping out from between the cracks of their kooky worldbuilding, rather than being the show’s central focus. Adventure time, as a series, is built more like a mosaic or a puzzle - as long as you know your general framework, you can fill in the pieces in any order and end up with a full picture.

By contrast, Steven Universe, which is absolutely a vessel for telling a story more than it is a vessel for worldbuilding or character development. It’s built more like a tower - you have to start at point A and work your way to point B. Then there’s the matter of the slice of life aspects that do exist in the SU lineup. I think the absolute Peak example of SU’s misuse of slice of life is The Good Lars (S4E23) The central conflict of this episode is that Lars gets invited to a potluck by the cool kids, and want to bring an ube roll cake. Lars is sensitive about his baking (a la high school musical) and decides to ditch the whole thing, throwing his homemade cake in the garbage.

I say this episode exemplifies where SU goes wrong because it didn’t show us anything new. We’ve known that Lars is aggressive because he is masking deep insecurities. We know that Steven wants to encourage him to be more friendly and outgoing. We know Sadie wants the same. We establish nothing new about the character’s personalities, their relationships to each other, the larger plot of the show, or the worlbuilding.

Now, once again, obviously most Adventure Time episodes don’t establish a ton of these things either, but it’s not because they’re doing it poorly - it’s because the adventure time oneshots have a fundamentally different purpose than Steven Universe oneshots.

Another thing hat happens in The Good Lars: Steven refers to his mother, Verbatim, as a war criminal. Technically correct, but also incredibly tonally bizarre in the episode. It doesn’t feel like a natural way of integrating the harsher reality of Steven’s world to the mundane life in the rest of beach city; it feels like theyre just saying ‘Hey, don’t worry, we’re still going somewhere with this. Now watch Lars mope more. 

So lets take a look at an Adventure Time oneshot episode. I’m going to try and pick one that follows an equally mundane set of events as The Good Lars to make sure it’s a fair comparison. In Video Makers (S2E23) Finn and Jake just spent the whole time trying to film a movie, because they woefully misunderstand pre-apocalyptic copyright law. They then spend the rest of the episode fighting about whether it’s a romance movie or an action movie, shooting a bunch of terrible footage. BMO compiles the movie and in the end it’s a movie about Finn and Jake being friends and why they shouldn’t fight.

Equally as unsubstantial as the steven universe episode. Equally as banal and saccharine. And yet, whereas The Good Lars is probably my least favorite ep of SU besides the racist uncle episode, I really really like Video Makers. And it’s because we don’t need to see character growth or plot growth in every episode of adventure time. Adventure time keeps itself open to, lets call it, ‘horizontal storytelling’ where we’re just given snapshots of moments within a world, as opposed to a straight narrative. Steven universe has, by contrast, ‘vertical storytelling’ where the process of going from point A to point B is the show’s frame.

i love Andy and Tang Yi together, they’re so dorky and Tang Yi totally lets his guard down around him, look at him giggle when Andy teases him

Jake Hsu is such a lovely actor: his faces and all his bodywork are extraordinary

that shirt is too cute and Shao Fei’s grumbly face and that strand of his hair make everything even more endearing

now, i do have so many questions: why would Tang Yi make him jealous only to immediately clarify that him and Andy are not a thing? and why is Shao Fei happy with that explanation when he just saw them making out? he questions him having that photo but not Tang Yi kissing someone’s boyfriend??? if he’d just ask more questions he’d at least come to the conclusion that Tang Yi deliberately tried to make him jealous..

next question: why does Shao Fei want to become friends with him? i hope it is still for investigative reasons otherwise this doesn’t make much sense to me

When'd you get into Adventure Time the first time, and how'd it happen? Been thinking of giving it a watch (especially after all the good stuff that's been said of Obsidian and, admittedly, all the stuff I've seen you post and reblog), and it got me curious

This is like my favourite story, and it is the only good one I remember from being a teenager (life from back then has been super foggy since I moved out of my mum's but it is all good now):

When I was 15 I made a new friend who wanted to write a comic about Teen Titans with me as the artist, TT being my second-favourite childhood show after DBZ.

I started bingewatching Teen Titans because I now had a computer and was able to do so. I learnt about the voice actors.

Starfire was played by Hynden Walch. I learnt that Hynden's latest role was Princess Bubblegum on Adventure Time. I checked it out on wikipedia. It seemed kind of cartoony for me.

One thing that caught my eye is when the wikipedia page said PB "may have had a past relationship" with Marceline, the vampire girl with the really pretty hair. I was confused by this, and rationalised it to myself as they must have had a history as friends or enemies. It didn't say what kind of relationship and I thought there was no chance of it meaning "romantic".

For the time being, I didn't look into AT further.

A couple months pass. After several months of tension, I get a text while in school telling me that my dad was breaking up with his fiance, and I would need to move back into my mother's place immediately. This was smack bang when I was about to start my GCSE exams - the timing couldn't be worse. My mother's house is a shit hive and I went between having a tiny box room to myself or sharing a messy bedroom with my sister and mother. There were no standards for hygeine and there wasn't a stable supply of food.

I decide to finish my binge watch of Teen Titans. I spend all day doing this every day. I rewatched it once I was done. It was what I did to cope.

At the same time, my Teen Titans comic friend confides in me. She tells me she thinks she might be a lesbian, and she is scared her parents will reject her. I sympathise deeply. At the time, I was waist deep in the closet to the point I couldnt accept certain things about myself either, but having a friend come out to me made me reconsider LGBT matters.

I looked on deviantart and saw some art for "RaeStar". I thought it was wrong to ship them (I shipped RobStar hardcore) but, well, the art was so cute. Their interactions were healthy and sweet. It was nice. This became my low key first gay ship.

Then, I start bingeing RebelTaxi's Teen Titans video reviews.

Once I am dry on Teen Titans content, I see RebelTaxi did a review on Fionna and Cake, and on Ryan North's Issue #2 of the Adventure Time comic.

The first video, Fionna and Cake, was appealing to me. The show had an amazing art style, and a decent sense of humor. I loved that they did something for the fans, making a genderbent fanfic episode based on popular fan characters. It was unprecedented and very post modern.

....But it was the SECOND video that made me take a very sudden interest in the show.

RebelTaxi was referring to a scene with PB and Marcy in the bottom of the Lich's bag. There is a joke where Marcy turns into a tentacle monster. RebelTaxi always makes hentai jokes when tentacle monsters are involved, but he interpreted this scene as referencing the characters' "lesbian undertones".

...Wait, WHAT? Hynden Walch's character and the pretty vampire have Lesbian Undertones?!?! Haven't I heard this somewhere before?!?!

A quick google search of "Adventure Time Lesbian Undertones" later, I discover the Mathematical! Controversy - how an episode with some incredible songwriting seemed to imply they had been girlfriends in the past who have residual feelings for each other. A podcast had been made by the producers fangirling about this possibility, but it was taken down, and the director fired. Nobody had outright said the subtext was not there, but they said they didn't want the podcast to sound like word of god. There had been a lot of upset in the gay community over this. Oh, by the way, there's a gay community of cartoon fans who really ship PB/Marcy.

With a combination of everything, from how my friend had just come out to me and was struggling with homophobia, to how I was a Hynden Walch fan, to how the show had already impressed me with what little I'd seen, I became IMMEDIATELY invested in finding out as much as possible about these potential LGBT characters and their relationship.

So I checked out a ton of Adventure Time videos on youtube. I checked the vids that had Marceline's backstory in, vids with funny moments from PB and all the other characters, I checked Deviantart for fanart where I made my first engagements with the fandom's gay community, I checked the Wiki talk pages to get ALL of the discourse. It changed who I was basically overnight.

I decided Adventure Time was a fun show with clever writing, and absolutely worth my attention. During the break for exams, I binge watched it all day, and then I would cram for my GCSEs between midnight and 3am on the day of the exam. I was addicted!

When I caught up, Goliad aired. This was the first ep to come out with me being in the fandom.

At the time, even though Hynden had drawn me to the show, Marceline was the character I was most invested in. She had the amazing backstory and music and character design. PB was fun, but there was relatively nothing to her character.

Oh boy, that ALL CHANGED with Goliad! People were intensely debating what the episode was saying about her. Is she a good person, a bad person? Why was she so troubled in the episode's opening, and why was Goliad corrupted?

Discourse only escalated with Princess Cookie. The top post on the wikia was "Is Princess Bubblegum evil?"

Thinking about her character was so interesting for me. These two episodes made me realise PB was a character with her own internal battles, who was struggling with the responsibility to do what was right for her people vs what is the Right Thing, with her own psychological wellbeing caught in the middle. My interpretation of Goliad was that PB was a naturally neutral person who had decided to be good, whereas Goliad had been corrupted by Jake's anger, and this contrasted with Finn who was a pure good person. The Princess Cookie episode reinforced my ideas, because she was doing something that was neither objectively good or bad but was a result of her own morality, and it went against Jake's morality. The idea of the "good guys" having such different values was so engaging, and they managed to come around at the end, with baby-snaps being submitted to rehabilitation.

Princess Cookie was also the first episode where PB was shown to be an adult while a currently adult character was a child. Either candy people age quickly, or - more likely - Pb is keeping her age a mystery. After thinking about this, I opened up a page on the wiki forums saying "Is Princess Bubblegum Old?"

This is what sealed my position in the fandom. I became a well known regular of the community after that, on Wikia and then Tumblr. It was my first fandom. So many good memories of theories, debates, analysis and fanart, the satisfaction of my theories being confirmed in season 5 onwards.

The most important thing to me, about engaging with the AT community, was how those initial interactions around the LGBT content were the groundwork for me being comfortable coming out of the closet. If it wasn’t for that, if it wasn’t for speaking specifically to Thisfreemind and Illeity about how gay relationships are perfectly fine and healthy for kids to see, and no less clean than straight relationships, I might be a person with far more conservative views today, and I might have fallen out with several of my closeted friends over internalized homophobia.  

I would have also probably failed high school. My grades improved drastically over the next year, because my online community life had made me happier.  It was comfort and stability during a difficult couple of years.

1. chews on the end of pencils when he's concentrating

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

“Hey, Leo.”

“Hey, Jason.”

“Hey, Leo. Guess what.”

“Hey, Jason. What.”

“Hey, Leo? Stop chewing on your fucking pencil.”

Leo finally looks up from the blueprints he's working on, bright red mechanical pencil still shoved in between his teeth.

“Okay…” he says, eyes tracking the movement of the lead as it bobs up and down in time with his words. “Am I distracting you?”

Jason’s eyes track the movements too, until he realizes that he’s literally watching Leo’s mouth and hurriedly glances away. “Okay - first, I’m literally doing nothing? I’m just sitting here, I dunno what you could be distracting me from. Second, no , but you tend to complain way too fuckin’ much when you go to erase some mistake or whatever and realize that you’ve bitten all the erasers off of your ridiculously expensive pencils.”

The brunet grins reluctantly in response, slowly letting the rubber end of his pencil tip until it falls out of his mouth, and they both watch as it lands on the wooden floor with a decisive crack . “Well, then.” He turns back to his sketch - an outline for Jason’s newest cabin, since Hera knows he’d never be able to do it himself (and boy, does she love to complain about how he can’t do any of his fucking work) - and silence overtakes the bunker.

Jason glances over at the flashing dialog clock stationed on the wall, squinting when the neon red numbers swim in front of his eyes before settling into straight lines.

3:06 AM.

Holy shit - when the hell did it get this late? He looks at Leo again and finds bloodshot eyes, ruffled hair that’s had a hand pushed through it one too many times, bags under his eyes and an almost manic smile on his face that stays present even as he grumbles at himself for a mistake in his measurements. Jason’s eyebrows scrunch up and he leans back into the swivel chair he uses whenever he and Leo are in the bunker together. He decides not to focus on the fact that he’s there so often that he has a designated place to chill - that, and the sudden realization that Leo made it that way.

Anyway.

“Leo.”

The boy in question throws his hands up and spins around wildly in his chair, going in circles for a while before finally settling to meet Jason's eyes. “¿Que quieres de mi?” [t - What do you want from me?]

Jason smiles a tiny bit- just a lift of the corners of his mouth, really. “You realize it's 3am, right?”

Leo's mouth drops open and he scrambles out of his chair, almost falling onto the floor in his search for his watch. Jason doesn’t tell him about the giant neon clock that he built, perfectly content to watch him look around like a maniac. “Shit, Jake's gonna kill me…” he finally mumbles, burying his face in his hands.

Jason smiled, “It'll be fine. C'mon, let's start heading back.”

Jason's eyes widen as a blur of Piper-shaped color speeds past he and Leo, holding something vaguely similar to a Polaroid camera.

"You do realize that's not an actual Polaroid camera, right? The Polaroid company stopped making the original cameras like a decade ago or somethin’." Leo looks up at him with a mildly amused expression, as if he thinks the statement is common knowledge. Leo thinks this, of course, because he is a weirdo with obscure immediate processing camera knowledge.

Is he thinking out loud?

“Nah, not really,” Leo says, shrugging his shoulders and adjusting the straps of his suspenders almost immediately after. Apparently Jason had immediately continued thinking out loud while wondering whether he was thinking out loud, because that’s just his life. “You just mumbled something about Polaroids and I figured it was in reference to the running Piper blob.”

“Huh. That’s interesting. Everyone just calls them Polaroids, so I guess I never really thought about it. What are they called, then?”

Leo pauses for a second. “Well. I don’t think the film or pictures or whatever has an actual name - which is why everyone just calls the pictures Polaroids - but I’m vaguely sure the brand of camera is Fujifilm or something. I haven’t used one of those since I got my DSLR one, but I’m pretty sure they sell for, like, 60 bucks in the city.” Jason nods, a thoughtful look settling on his face in the form of a tilted eyebrow.

“THERE YOU ARE!” Leo and he jump about a foot in the air (Jason having to fight his instinct yelling at him to fly the fuck away, and Leo almost slamming himself into Jason’s back) when Piper runs back to stand in front of them. She’s got a hopeful look on her face and a wild look in her eyes, and neither of the conflicting emotions make Jason feel any better about the camera in her hands.

“I’ve been looking for you guys everywhere! Where the hell have you been?” she asks, breath still shaky from all the running she’s probably been doing. Leo and Jason share a amused glance.

Leo speaks up. “We’ve been here for like an hour, Pipes. I dunno how you haven’t seen us yes - we’ve been sitting here for like half an hour and you ran right past us only a minute ago."

Piper narrows her eyes at Leo, seemingly reluctant to accept his explanation, but shrugs and settles on the soles of her feet with a goofy grin. “Well, it doesn't really matter now that I've found you, right? Anyway, I need your help with something. It's not serious, don't worry about that, but I'd really really really appreciate it.”

Leo smiles widely at her, his eyes crinkling at the edges. “Sure, as long as it doesn’t lead to the possibility of my graceful, yet horrific and destructive death. What's up?”

She rolls her eyes and ignores him, turning just the slightest bit to face Jason instead. “Do you think you could help me get pictures of everyone? I’m, uh, planning on heading to New Rome in a bit- with Nico? If he’ll take me, y'know." She shrugs. "It’s summer, though, and since everyone’s here I’d, uh," she coughs suddenly, "like to get as many pictures as I can.” Jason can hear the tone of wistfulness in Piper’s voice, and he winces internally in sympathy.

The war hadn't ended all that long ago - neither had their relationship - and the wounds were still fresh, in both cases. He, at least, could understand the desire to make memories that would last.

Heads turns towards Leo as he starts bouncing on the tips of his toes, his face lit up in excitement. “Yeah, sure! Sounds awesome to me! How many people do you want to take photos of? Do you have enough film? Do you want to be in the photos? Do you want us to be in the photos? Are they going to be candids? Where are you going to put them? When do you-”

“Leo, chill, okay? I’m taking things one step at a time.” Leo grins sheepishly and stops bouncing ignoring the confused stares from bystanders (fucking New York - Jason can never get a break from staring people, he swears ). “Can I take a photo of you two first?” she asks.

Jason and Leo both nod at Piper simultaneously, then look at each other with happy grins on their faces. "Yeah, let's do it!"

Piper steps forward, pulling her camera out of the case hanging from her neck. Jason and Leo both scramble to get into some kind of position for the picture. The shorter of the two slings an arm around the taller boy’s shoulder- Jason, in turn, wraps his arm around Leo's waist, his thumb brushing against Leo's slender hipbone.

Piper beams, aiming it towards the two.

"Alright, ready? One, two, th - Connor I swear to god if you don’t get out of the shot I’m going to literally murder you - okay, ready? - alright, here we go -" Jason feels a flicker of movement out of the corner of his eye but ignores it until the flash of the camera goes off. He turns to face Leo, who, at the last moment, had thrown up a peace sign in front of his face. With wide eyes, Jason slowly looks back at Piper, who has lowered the camera and is waiting for the picture to come out. She doesn’t seem very surprised- all she does is raise an eyebrow in response. What?

Jason’s face twists. Does he always do that?

She shrugs, and Leo shifts under Jason’s weight. Jason draws back a bit, surprised by Leo’s casual acceptance of his arm in such an intimate position, and Leo looks up at him with furrowed eyebrows.

You okay?

Jason smiles widely, running a thumb over the smooth skin on Leo’s hip and pretending to ignore the small shudder that goes through the smaller boy. Yeah, I’m fine.

  3. covers his mouth with his hand while laughing

"Hey, Leo." Jason's voice is colored with hidden amusement.

The brunette in question lifts his head briefly from where he's hunched over, playing with some sort of toy helicopter.

"Yeah?" he asks, already starting to smile.

"What did the Vikings name their plant?"

Leo snorts. "Fuck if I know."

Jason starts laughing before he even starts the sentence. "L-LEAF Erikson!"

Leo, despite himself, feels his mouth start to stretch wide into a grin. Before he knows it, Jason and he are both sitting on the ground, heads buried in their hands and shoulders shaking with giggles.

"H-hey, hey, Leo," Jason manages.

Leo doesn't bother trying to respond, instead just flopping a hand in Jason general's vicinity.

"Wh-why did the s-skeleton wan-want a friend?"

Leo sighs in mock exasperation, his raucous laughter finally dying down in favor of a response. "Why?"

Jason's eyes crinkle. "Because he was BONELY!" Leo immediately bursts out in laughter, slapping a hand across his mouth in what appears to be a reflex.

How has he never noticed that before?

God, he loves Leo’s laugh. It’s more like a giggle than anything - all high-pitched and bubbly; his mouth stretches into the widest smile Jason’s ever seen, and his tongue sticks out between his teeth just a little bit, and holy fuck Jason’s in love with Leo.

Shit.

Jason’s eyes widen minutely - he isn’t fluent by any means, but he knows enough to get by, and to tell that Leo is seriously pissed.

He raps on the door of the Hephaestus cabin softly, poking his head in and watching as sunlight starts to filter in through the doorway. Leo sets his hammer down with a bang , and Jason twitches.

“ Jesuchristo… yes, Chris, I know I haven’t eaten in fourteen hours, yes, Chris, I’m aware that I haven’t eaten in longer, but if none of you are willing to help me finish this I don’t really have any other option.” Leo trails off into a series of angry mumbles as he lets out a soft sigh, and Jason frowns worriedly.

“Not Chris, but I can’t say I blame him for being worried about you.” Leo’s face transforms as he turns around in his chair; his eyebrows smooth out and he gets a tiny smile on his face and his eyes crinkle at the corners and he’s fucking gorgeous .

Ahem.

Jason clears his throat (and his mind, though less successfully) and shifts the tray balanced in his hands, holding it up for Leo’s inspection.

Leo finally looks down at the food on the tray and almost immediately stands up, grin getting wider despite his stumbling over the tool left on the floor next to his chair. Jason bites his lower lip in an attempt to hide the fond smile he knows he gets whenever Leo does something dumb.

“Damn,” Leo mutters, walking over to grab the tray from him. “I knew there was a reason I loved you.”

Jason swallows harshly. “Y’know, ‘loved’ kind of implies you don’t love me now - I’ve gotta admit, that’s a little disheartening.” Leo rolls his eyes exaggeratedly from where he’s setting down the overflowing tray of food (okay, yes, maybe Jason went a little overboard when wishing up food for Leo to eat, but what do you expect?) on his bed. He straightens up and lifts an outstretched hand in Jason’s direction, twisting his face into something vaguely representing heartbreak.

“Alas,” Leo says with conviction, “mine boiling love for thee hath faded into somethink simmering, not nearly as warming underneath thy soul!”

Jason starts to form a properly Shakespearean response in his head, then stops. “What the hell is that even supposed to mean?”

Leo shrugs. “I think I stopped being in love with you. Not that that would ever happen in real life, obviously.” He winks.

“Right. Obviously.”
