Everything You Need To Know For Metroid Prime 4

I finally have an excuse to use all of my Metroid knowledge for something. Metroid Prime 4 is a BIG deal, but we've waited for it for so long, so people might not know/have forgotten some important information they're gonna need beforehand, so here's a big post detailing basically everything you definitely need to know or may need to know, depending on what happens in the game. I'm of course assuming a familiarity with the series, though, so I don't have to explain what Metroids are or who Samus is, but even if you're still really into it, maybe you missed one or two things I'll hopefully be able to explain.

This is mostly off of memory, and I am very confident in my memory, but I checked a Metroid wiki for multiple points, so hopefully I'm accurate, but if I miss something, get something wrong, or you just have something you want me to add, let me know, since I want this to be comprehensive. Alright, let's do this.

This is LONG, so all the facts (& idle speculation) are under the cut.

One caveat I almost forgot about, I have a confession, I... Haven't played any of the Prime games besides the remaster of the original. I tried to emulate Hunters, but it didn't end well, and I was led astray into believing that ports of Metroid Prime 2 & 3 were going to be ported to the Switch "soon"... Last year, and now I don't have nearly as much time on my computer as I'd like to play them on an emulator. I can only hope they get ported to the next console, or get released with 4, or something. I'd like to think I know about as much as I need to, though.

A "Brief" Summary of the Metroid Prime Series

So far, the entire sub-series has taken place in-between Metroid 1/Zero Mission, and Metroid 2/Samus Returns. It's relatively self-contained, and only acknowledged in the main series once (to my knowledge), meaning you could be a big Metroid fan and still know nothing about Metroid Prime, so just to be sure, here's a summary of the Metroid Prime games we've had so far.

Metroid Prime 1: Samus responds to a distress signal from a Space Pirate research ship, discovering they were performing genetic experiments with a mysterious mutagenic substance. The ship is destroyed by an escaped Parasite Queen, but Ridley, injured after Metroid 1 and enhanced with cybernetics (now dubbed Meta Ridley), escapes to the planet the ship was orbiting, Tallon IV. Samus gives chase, discovering that the planet is also being effected by that same mutagen, named Phazon, that the Space Pirates are experimentig further on the planet, and that the Chozo once thrived here before dying out due to the Phazon's destructive effects. Samus confronts Meta Ridley, who is shot into submission by Chozo technology and launched down a pit, and enters a passage in that temple into a Leviathan, a living asteroid filled with Phazon that spread it onto Tallon IV in the first place. Samus finds a Metroid mutated beyond recognition, the Metroid Prime, and confronts it, eventually destroying it, though it consumes her Phazon Suit upgrade that made her immune to Phazon, and Samus escapes the Leviathan as it explodes, leaving Tallon IV behind. However, it's shown that the Metroid Prime reanimates in the image of Samus. Dark Samus is born.

Metroid Prime Hunters: Though it was released after Prime 2, it chronologically takes the place of a 1.5, so yeah. A mysterious message is sent out from the Alimbic System, claiming that ultimate power can be found in said system. The Galactic Federation dispatches Samus to claim it, who finds that multiple other characters are hunting for it, who I will get into in great detail in a second. However, it was a trick by the malevolent entity Gorea, who was sealed away in the Alimbic System and freed by Samus & her rivals in their search. Gorea is blown up, and everyone leaves.

Metroid Prime 2: a group of Galactic Federation soldiers are lost on the planet Aether. Samus goes to investigate, finding that the arrival of a Leviathan has split it into two alternate dimensions: Aether and Dark Aether, and Dark Aether's inhabitants, the Ing, have almost driven Aether's, the Luminoth, to extinction, and could threaten the galaxy in the future. Dark Samus is here, and has allied itself with the Ing in order to feed on the Phazon on the planet. The Space Pirates are here, too, but are getting destroyed by Dark Samus & the Ing, and those GF soldiers are dead. Samus ends up destroying the entirety of Dark Aether after a climactic showdown with the Emperor Ing & Dark Samus, the Luminoth are saved and presumably repopulate, and Samus leaves. However, Dark Samus reforms in space, and finds it's way on a Space Pirate ship that escaped Aether with a bunch of Phazon.

Metroid Prime 3: Dark Samus has brainwashed the Space Pirates, Ridley included, and together they're throwing Leviathans all over the galaxy, so the Galactic Federation has enlisted Samus and 3 other bounty hunters to help stop them. However, Dark Samus infects all 4 of them with Phazon, resulting in all of them but Samus turning evil, and, as Samus travels across planets to destroy the Leviathans, she is forced to kill off her allies. Eventually, Samus confronts Dark Samus on the living planet Phaaze, the source of all Phazon that wants to infect the entire universe. Dark Samus is defeated, but they fuse with the stolen Aurora Unit 313 (Aurora Units are basically Mother Brains but used by the GF) that was being used by Phaaze for the entire Leviathan campaign. Samus blows it up, the entire planet explodes, Phazon as a whole just kinda... Disappears, and she escapes to go on other missions. However, in a post-credits scene, a ship owned by Sylux, one of the rivals from MP:H, is stalking Samus.

Metroid Prime Federation Force: The Federation has made it's own, clunky armor suits that are much worse than Samus' but better than whatever else they were doing at the time. Space Pirates are doing things, so you go stop them. They have a beam that makes things bigger, and they use it to take over Samus' suit, trap her in Morph Ball mode and make her bigger and make her fight the armor guys, who defeat her and blow up the Master Brain, which is just a lamer Mother Brain and the head of the operation. The Space Pirate bases are destroyed, the day is saved, but it's shown in an unlockable post-credits scene that Sylux stole a Metroid egg from the Federation and hatched it. Uh oh.

Who To Worry About

Characters, wahoo!

Samus: It is unknown if she will return in Metroid Prime 4... No, obviously she's the main character.

Dark Samus/Phazon: I sincerely doubt they're bringing Phazon back, it was shown to have been thoroughly eradicated in Prime 3 and they're clearly open to Prime games not involving Phazon judging from H and FF, so, unless they come up with a damn good explanation as to how Dark Samus is still around, I wouldn't hold my breath.

The Space Pirates: They're shown to be back in the trailers, duh, but note that throughout the entire Prime series, besides for Federation Force, they're shown to be a secondary threat. One of the rivals in Hunters was a Space Pirate, and they were of equal importance as everyone else, too, which is... Not really. They're shown to be with Sylux, who has been built up for years now, and are like... The main part of the trailer, so I'm not saying they aren't going to be important, I'm just saying that something else might crop up we haven't seen yet.

Ridley: Will our beloved purple dragon bastard come back? I'm gonna go with... No. For one, he wasn't in Prime 2, but was in 1 & 3, and bringing him back multiple games in a row would be kinda lame, and Nintendo already seems to be phasing him out if you look at later titles. I doubt they would've made him a 3 phase final boss in the Metroid 2 remake if they had big plans for him elsewhere (But then again, I have no idea if MercurySteam and Retro Studios are on the same page about lore), though he is shown to still have the Meta cybernetics there, so Prime is probably canon to the main series, at least, if it's not just a red herring reference that doesn't mean anything in particular. There's also another thing I'm going to bring up later that's another point against him showing up.

Kraid: I have no reason to believe they'd bring him back, but I just wanna note Meta Kraid was a scrapped Prime 1 boss and he was brought back in Dread for no clear reason, so... Mmmmaybe?

Galactic Federation: You're shown to be at a GF Research Facility in Prime 4, and obviously these guys are important again, especially after their bigger role in Prime 3 & Federation Force. I know they introduced a new captain character in Prime 3, I think his name was Dane? So he might show up. Sylux has a huge grudge against the entire organization, and stole his gear from them, so there's a possibility we'll see the same darker side of them we saw in Fusion and Other M to justify that. Worth noting that Fusion had a translation error where it was supposed to be specified that the bad actors were part of the "old Federation army", or something to that effect, so it isn't the entire Federation that's sketchy, but if they were active in Fusion, the current penultimate game in the timeline, they almost definitely could've been active for whenever Sylux's grudge began. Other M also has dubious canonicity at this point, but still, it shows Nintendo isn't opposed to showing a darker side of the GF.

Federation Force: It seems Prime 4 takes place after FF due to Sylux having Mochtroids, the GF are being directly attacked by Space Pirates in the trailer, the FF have previously taken on a Space Pirate attack on the GF and won, and have even collaborated with Samus in the past. Maybe they'll be the equivalent of Prime 3's bounty hunters, minus the turning bad part. Probably. But FF is also the lowest rated Metroid game in the franchise, so...

Sylux: One of the rivals in Hunters, and as mentioned, shows up in Prime 3 and Federation Force post-credits scenes. He's the blue & green guy in the Prime 4 trailer. All we really know is that he hates the Federation (and by extension Samus), and stole his armor & weapon, the Shock Coil, from them. His species is unknown (People assume he's human but it's unconfirmed), and his homeworld, Cylosis, is also not elaborated on anywhere, giving us no leads. We see some kind of snowy wasteland location in his Hunters intro, but we don't know if that's Cylosis. (Cylosis seems to derived be from the word Cyclosis, which is something like cytoplasm getting circulated throughout cells, so... No idea.) He inexplicably changed ships between Hunters and 3, and is shown with Metroids in FF, but in the Prime 4 trailer has Mochtroids. He is also seemingly allied with the Space Pirates, and is absolutely going to be a big problem. (By the way, I tried to keep these summaries relatively brief, but @ postal-ech has a great post going over each Hunters character in detail if you're interested... hey wait why is that underlined none of the other usernames I've added here got that, is that actually gonna notify the guy? oops, spacing it out just in case because I know they already saw this post lol)

Mochtroids: Yes, I'll elaborate. Weak, failed Metroid clones made by the Space Pirates in Super Metroid, distinguishable by only having one nucleus. Sylux has Mochtroids in the Prime 4 trailer, which is probably why they aren't lashing out at anyone yet. It's unclear how important they'll be, but they haven't shown up anywhere besides Super Metroid, and even then were only in Maridia, so... Neat. Unclear what this means for the Metroids, especially Sylux's in specific. Fun fact, Mochtroids were in Hunters' demo, but not the actual game.

Weavel: A Space Pirate previously encountered by Samus in Metroid 1/Zero Mission, almost killed, and brought back as a cyborg guy, which is how we see him in Hunters. He obviously has a strong hatred towards Samus because of this. If they're bringing Sylux back, another Samus hater from Hunters, and bringing the Space Pirates back, Weavel's faction, I'd wager it's a pretty safe hope to have that Weavel may show up again.

Trace & the Kriken Empire: Trace is another Hunters rival, a representative of the Kriken Empire, described as "space cockroaches" so problematic the FEDERATION AND SPACE PIRATES WOULD TEAM UP TO ERADICATE IF NECESSARY. At a certain age, a Kriken is sent out to claim a planet for the Empire, which is presumably then conquered, though Trace specifically set his sights on the ultimate power from the Alimbic System, which he failed to collect. It's unknown if he was then disgraced, orrr if he claimed a planet after the fact. Maybe one we saw in Hunters? I could see these guys serving a similar role as the Ing in Prime 2, but I have no actual evidence they'll have a major role beyond it just being a logical choice based on what we already have.

Noxus & the Vhozon: Noxus is another Hunters rival, of the Vhozon species, who wanted to secure the ultimate power so that it didn't fall into the hands of evil, as their species places a lot of emphasis on peace and balance. Their homeworld, Vho, is also called out as having subzero temperatures, for whatever that's worth. In case it isn't obvious, I'm just listing off every Hunters rival because at this point it's a coin toss on whether or not they'll bring back more besides Sylux and who it'll be.

Spire & the Diamonts: Spire is another Hunters rival, and the last of the Diamont species, some weird, golem-like things that went extinct at some point. Spire was a good guy, and wanted the ultimate power to figure out what happened to his people. This is like, the fifth extinct/near-extinct race, isn't it? I did the math, there's like 8 now, actually.

Kanden & the Enoema: Final Hunters rival, Kanden is a lab experiment from his species, the Enoema, in an attempt to make essentially an ultimate life form for combat, though Kanden escaped and got a big ego. He wanted the ultimate power just for power's sake. He's essentially the wild card of the crew. He has an electric field around him, whatever that means.

Gorea: The final boss of Hunters, some random creature that just showed up in the Alimbic System to kill the Alimbics before being sealed away. It's shown to be immensely powerful, and we have no idea if there's more. If there is more, though, there could be another Gorea in Metroid Prime 4. But I wouldn't count on it.

What we Knew About Prime 4 Before the Trailer

Side note, most of this is from this Metroid wiki's timeline segment on their Prime 4 page, but it's also mostly after a certain point just people being hired by Retro Studios who may or may not be working on Prime 4, so I'm leaving all that out because it's incredibly unimportant and boring.

Metroid Prime 4's first look video only gave us the logo, but the video depicted the screw attack symbol forming out of space dust in space, the letter 4 appearing in blue flame and then the blue & black original Metroid Prime 4 logo as the Metroid Prime 1 title theme played. I'm too lazy to find the video, but that sounds like Dark Samus reforming at the end of Prime 2, who was also blue & black. Phazon returns?

There's a chance that multiplayer, or unique Morph Ball gimmicks, may show up, as they were brought up in an interviewer with Kensuke Tanabe, the main director of the Prime games, when he was talking about future Prime installments. If they're bringing back at least one rival from Hunters, one of the games with multiplayer, and also gave each rival a Morph Ball equivalent, hm... Hunters released before that interview, by the way.

It was also said in a different interview (I think) that Prime 4 might focus on a single planet again, and a time travel gimmick might be involved. I assume it'd work similarly to the dimension hopping from Prime 2 but I dunno, it was left vague.

BUT, development reset at some point in 2019 after all of this was shown and said, so I have NO CLUE how much of this is still applicable or now a red herring. However, due to the logo change, I will say that logo in specific probably no longer means anything.

The guy behind Hunters in specific mentioned in a 2020 interview that they have a backstory for Sylux written up that has "a lot of threaded storytelling" and thus made using him in future games "a good fit". He specifically called out wanting to talk about what's under his suit, so make of that what you will.

There was a specific job posting for Retro Studios that mentioned writing emotional scenes that will resonate with people, and given that the main trilogy gradually ramped up that kind of thing... I dunno, I don't want to plant ideas in people's heads before I write my big post where I just make shit up based off all of this as a part 2.

There was also a Retro Studios Twitter banner of MP4 concept art showing Samus in some weird blue & black hallway... Hey, wait a minute. We don't know if this concept art predates the development reset, though, but since it's Retro Studios which came on after the development reset, so... May be a coincidence, but I'm calling it out anyways.

THE IMPORTANT PART: Trailer Analysis

Quick side note, huge shoutout to all the people who dissected the trailer on their own pointing out a bunch of individual observations I bring up here all together (Plus my own field work). I won't be able to track down all the posts to credit them all and it'd feel unfair to only link the one or two I can probably find, but still, thanks, guys.

COSMIC YEAR 20X9 Galactic Federation Research Facility

Pause right here, right now. This is IMPORTANT. The research facility is just the setting for the trailer, it doesn't matter too much, but THERE'S A DATE. One of the rarest things in the entire franchise, even rarer than Samus leaving a planet without blowing something up on it. Or just blowing it up in it's entirety. So, what does this tell us? Well, I had to fucking to find a list of every mentioned date, mostly coming from instruction books & the like, so have it all. Get ready for contradictions!

2000: The Galactic Federation forms. One specific thing says it was 2003, but 2000 is neater.

20X5: The Space Pirate attack on a GF research vessel that prompted Samus to go to Zebes in 1/Zero Mission, also in 20X5. Metroid 2/Samus Returns supposedly takes place less than a year afterwards, but it's unclear if this'd overlap into the next year, as we're only given years, not months.

20X6: Federation Force occurs, but somehow takes place several years after Prime 3. It's also mentioned somewhere Prime 1 also takes place years after Zero Mission, so, uh... I dunno. The X in the format when we had 2000 earlier already throws a wrench in just about everything we know about calendars. X in roman numerals means 10, so maybe it's representing a decade? That'd work.

20X7: Super Metroid. This came from a random Japanese ad, so, uh, I dunno. Especially since it's supposed to happen, like, immediately after Metroid 2?

20X9: Metroid Prime 4.

So, look, I don't know if this is accurate anymore, because that's... A lot of dubious sources, but it's all we have. If that is accurate, especially 20X7, that is FUCKING HUGE. This means, among other things, that the Metroids are wiped out, Ridley and Mother Brain are dead for real (unless...), Zebes is destroyed, the X are beginning to propagate again, and this is after Federation Force. Unclear if this is before or after Other M, though, if anybody cares about that game being in the timeline, but it's obvious from Samus' suit in the trailer (We'll get to that) that this is before Fusion & Dread, unless Metroid 6 has her regain her old suit somehow.

Samus flies into a rocky region with her ship from Prime 3 & Federation Force, with slight design alterations, such as Samus popping out the top instead. This... Doesn't make sense, since she had a separate ship for Super... Unless this is actually after Fusion where that ship got destro- Wait, no, she has the purple ship, after. So, that may mean the date inconsistency is actually a red herring. Up to you. For a split second, when Samus is jumping out, you can see these ships in the sky. Are these Space Pirate ships, or GF ships? I don't know, I haven't looked into fucking spaceship lore. Let me know, if you know.

(@codylabs has let me know that this is a type of Space Pirate warship shown in Prime 3, just without that game's version's indications of Phazon fuel, and also clarified that Samus probably owned the Prime 3 ship used here and the Super ship simultaneously, thanks, go read their reblog for more detail on all that and detail on all of Samus' ships in general if you care)

(I'd have used more screenshots, but I'm writing this on an iPad, so it's a lot more annoying when you can just go find what I'm talking about in the trailer. If you're here, you've probably watched it already. I might go back and add more if I edit this later.)

I saw someone say that Samus' suit is slightly different, too, but I... I don't care. I'm here for the notes about story & gameplay, not every little design differences (Same goes for pointing out the new intro jingle & the visor redesign). I know some of you are, so if somebody gives me, like... A comprehensive list of all those little things, I may add it if I'm not lazy, but that's not my point here. (@nathaniel-prime reblogged this pointing a ton of the design changes out, but they had... A lot to say, so just go read all that yourself.)

Whatever's happening here, it's happening big. A massive purple laser blows up a turret shooting into the sky at those ships (probably), there's fire, there's more gunfire in the distance, you get the idea, there's a big fight. There's even a Space Pirate shooting at other Space Pirates. Can enemies get angry at each other due to AI shenanigans, or is that plot relevant? Will that mean anything for Weavel?

In the bottom left, where there'd usually be the beam selection, there's the missile launcher, instead, meaning you're probably going to have different weapons down there instead of just different beams. Maybe the Affinity Weapons of the Hunters rivals? There's 4 slots, one taken up by missiles, so that'd leave... 3 rival weapons. Will that happen? Probably not, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sylux's Shock Coil is added here. Or they do something like Prime 2's Beams that have ammo.

Space Pirate theme remix, new Space Pirate designs, destroyed buildings (Presumably the Research Facility), wounded Space Pirate scan like with Prime 1's Frigate Orpheon (Scan Visor's back), so it's a fight between the Federation and Pirates.

You can see an Energy Tank, those are back, you see the Morph Ball is obviously back, Federation scientists are wheeling something away when Space Pirates break in (may or may not be relevant depending on what they're researching), the Space Pirates launch themselves into the building with capsules... Is it just me, or does some of this building look like the concept art from earlier? (I later rewatched it and no longer see the resemblance.) Also, there's Federation soldiers in armor resembling the Fed armor seen in Other M, so there's that. I wonder how much else they'll take from Other M.

Now for the moment. Cutscene where Samus rolls onto the ground as a wall explodes in a big room perfect for a boss arena, revealing 4 Space Pirates, 2 Mochtroids, and our boy Sylux, who gives Samus a stare. Samus gives a stare back. You could see that the room was mostly empty besides for some random thingies in the corners, so I'd assume this is where the first Sylux boss fight would take place, as that's the perfect reveal cutscene for him.

Then we get the logo, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Looks sufficiently space-y, but it also resembles a black hole. Now, if this is after Super, when the Space Pirates are pretty much backed into a corner now that all of their leaders besides fucking Kraid (and maybe Phantoon) are dead (unless Zebes wasn't actually a big deal for them), I could see them doing something drastic, like, I dunno... Building a black hole generator? Or weaponizing one? Wouldn't be the first time black holes are a big plot point in a space-themed Nintendo game, though I don't remember if Bowser made the black hole in Mario Galaxy (Or was it Galaxy 2?), I never played it. If time travel is a gimmick, I could see you having to go back in time and preventing it from being used... Or the black hole is just for a space-y graphic, or it's used as this planet's native race's symbol or something. (Future me here, I'm stupid and didn't think about the whole time travel gimmick here even though I brought it up despite black holes and time travel being discussed together all the time, the black hole could be what's used for time travel to some extent. What if Beyond in the title means beyond the black hole? Or, like, the future?)

After the logo, you see a lush forest environment with bird-like things, green mist, Samus walking out of a PORTAL (The time travel gimmick?), giant trees (one has a big opening to walk into it at it's roots), giant cliffs revealing nothing but clouds, one REALLY BIG TREE. Probably a major landmark. No architecture in sight, too, so maybe it's the past? And the date 2025, for our release window. I saw something in the Metroid Prime 4 info timeline from earlier that was Reggie, former Nintendo of America president, saying (I'm paraphrasing) that Nintendo likes to do extended reveals of the games six to nine months before the game's release. Is this an extended reveal? I personally don't think so, but I may be stupid.

Conclusions

in no particular order, here's the main takeaways. Of course, I could be wrong about all of these, we don't have much to go off of.

Phazon is probably not around anymore.

Space Pirates & Sylux are (two of?) the big bads, and the Galactic Federation is probably important. Space Pirates may be in-fighting?

The game may take place after Super Metroid, which has all sorts of implications.

Time travel & black holes may be relevant.

Out of all of of the other rivals from Metroid Prime: Hunters besides Sylux, Weavel seems the most likely to return, but it's unknown if any others will return at all.

Mochtroids return, whatever that implies.

The beam swapping system seems to be replaced with different weaponry, but the core Prime gameplay seems in tact (Though the state of visors besides the Scan Visor are entirely up in the air).

It may be released in early 2025? Maybe? Probably not.

Hopefully this helps at least one person out there. Again, let me know if I should add or change anything or anything like that. I plan on making a part 2 where I just baselessly speculate about what could happen in the game with all of these crumbs, so if this post pops off, I'll probably do that. (Hey, I did that.)

So Tech is the person that Echo spends the most time with, when he first goes with the Batch. This isn't because of any desire to connect on Tech's part - the only reason nobody calls him unfriendly is cause Crosshair is right there, in much the way that your neighbour's snarly dog isn't much of a problem compared to a rabid T Rex.

Instead, it's because the Bad Batch realise that, y'know, Echo's been Matrixed into a freezer for a while (timeline is not my strength but it was a few years, I think). Somebody's gotta figure out those cyborg parts and how to fix them, preferably before something breaks. And of course for something that serious, you choose the smart one.

At first, Echo is very awkward about this. The last thing he wants is someone digging around in his parts, even if it's for a good reason. But he also knows that it's going to be even worse for everybody if he has some sudden breakdown that disables him. So he grits his teeth and bears it.

(Tech does not notice shit about this. He has new science to explore, new problems to figure out, and human interaction has never been his strong suit. Autism King <3)

There's definitely some initial awkwardness, but Echo figures out pretty quickly that if he gets Tech rambling about something, the sound of his voice is soothing. Echo thinks nothing of it. (lol. lmao even.) He also comes to find it vaguely endearing when Tech gets distracted in the middle of something because he thinks of some cool upgrade that he can do. The Iron Man-style rocket boots are a total success. Tech is fully convinced his sensation of affection and pride is just because he got the boots working, and nothing to do with Echo himself (again: lol. lmao even.)

Tech pokes at the dataport, frowns, and looks down at his datapad. "Can you give me a hand with this?" A metal arm clatters to the floor next to him. Echo, across the room, hasn't moved from his co-pilot's seat and is still watching the latest episode of his holodrama. "Technically," he begins, adjusting his goggles with an indignant sniff, "yes, that is what I asked for. But I expected better of you."

Echo suddenly has some fucking thoughts about the possibility of Tech praising him, let me tell you. Still, he also has some reservations, because there's times where Tech gets too invested in the ✨ science ✨ and Echo starts feeling kind of like an experiment all over again.

Anyway the two of them are getting along pretty well and Tech is remaining fairly oblivious to both their feelings. (This is not a dig at Tech, I'm simply a huge sucker for ships where one of them doesn't realise their feelings until a Dramatic Moment, generally involving a near-death experience.) Except that Echo doesn't much like talking about his past and all the Clone Trauma™, especially pertaining to his lost Fives, and Tech's a nosy bitch who wants to know everything.

So Tech finds a way to get Echo's file. If the reg's not gonna talk, well, when has Tech ever respected a 'no access' sign? He reads through it and takes some notes, and it seems as though things are fine.

Except once Echo actually does start opening up about his past, Tech jumps in to fill in some details. Details that Echo certainly never told him. And Echo wants to know how Tech knows, and Tech's a shit liar, so the truth comes out.

Echo is not pleased with the truth.

(pain incoming)

"Well, I've... read your file," Tech says, hesitantly. He reaches up to adjust his goggles. A nervous tic, one that Echo usually finds endearing. But hearing that Tech was reading his file makes something twist in his stomach - what's left of it. Especially with Tech nervous about it. Echo's never really seen him like that. Not with him. "Okay," he replies, fighting to keep his voice and expression as close to 'calm' as possible. "And?" "I know it's been, well, hard. For you. For the other reg- the other clones." Echo stares at him, too shocked to attempt a look of neutrality any more. Tech must be joking. He must be. Not about reading his file, Echo had assumed that the Batch had all dug into him to find out who he was. But thinking that he knows anything about what it was like? Just because he read a file? He's seen the kinds of files that are kept on clones. They're dry, succinct, and mention nothing about who a clone is, just a service record like the kind you'd see kept about a machine. Because that's just about all they were, to the people in charge. The clones certainly weren't people to anyone but themselves. "So what's it like, Tech? Go on, you read the file." He waits. It's harsh, he knows, maybe even cruel, but he's not much in a laughing mood any more. "Maybe I... missed a few things," Tech hedges, looking very much like he wants to escape. "How much more do you want to know? Because they carved me out of myself, but they left the memories, and I see all of it every single night, so I can tell you more than the devil himself could stomach." He waits, but Tech doesn't say anything, just shifts his weight, eyes wide, fingers curling and uncurling around his datapad. Finally, Echo says, "You don't know shit, Tech. Don't ever pretend you do. Especially not around me." He leaves. For once, Tech's not distracted. For once, Tech watches him go.

So there's a bump in the road, as it were. Well, more like hitting a moose with your janky 90s sedan. You walked away from it physically fine but you have an overwhelming feeling about how oh god you're so fucked. Also who do you call about that???

Echo calls Rex. Rex does not know what to do about this. He lets Echo vent until they've been sitting quietly for a few minutes, and then suggests that maybe that was just Tech's way of trying to connect to Echo. Not exactly normal, "but you always did say, when you called, that he always paid attention to you and wanted to know more about you. Maybe this is an extension of that, and he didn't realise that he was crossing some lines."

(Yes, in my head, Rex is lowkey playing matchmaker. He's heard the way Echo's voice changes when he talks about Tech, and he wants to see where this goes.)

Meanwhile, Tech is bothering the shit out of Hunter because 'you know how people work, what did I do?'

This is the first that Hunter is hearing about any of this. He doesn't have the slightest idea what's going on, but he does have some experience with relationship difficulties caused by inadvertent assholery *inserts my Cross/Hunter agenda here*

So Rex helps Echo calm down, and Hunter helps Tech figure out how to apologise. Tech doesn't do shit with that knowledge because emotional conversations suck and he'd much rather pretend that just never happened, thank you goodbye. He's just a huge anxious mess because he doesn't know why people think he's being weird or mean or rude when he thought they were Just Vibing.

It takes like two months for Tech to make a move to fix this, is what I'm saying.

"Echo?" Tech asks hesitantly. He stands with his hands clasped in front of him, one thumb rubbing over the knuckles of his opposite hand. "Fuck off." Tech winces, but, well - with the way he inadvertently treated Echo, it's not like he can complain. "I- when I mentioned your file-" "Don't." "I was just trying to say that you didn't have to hide anything from me. That you were one of us. And we'd do our best to understand. I didn't- I'm not good at apologies, I'm sorry, I'll go-" "Wait." Tech freezes in the doorway, even more uncertain now. Echo sighs and looks at him. If his gaze is supposed to be communicating something, it's not in a language that Tech speaks. Maybe his uncertainty shows on his face, or maybe Echo was just waiting to collect his thoughts. "Thanks, Tech." Despite the awkward seriousness of their conversation, Tech smiles. "You're welcome, Echo. And if there's- I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to, you know, but if there's anything you wanted to talk about, um, well, I'm only so far away. The Marauder's not a big ship." Echo doesn't say anything else, but he nods, and Tech feels like he actually managed to make some progress as he slips back out to the kitchen.

Anyway Echo has to comm Rex and send him ten bucks because Rex was right about Tech not being an asshole. Rex is only a little smug about this.

Echo slowly starts gravitating back towards Tech after that, and Tech is all !!!! not entirely sure what's happening but apparently the hot one Echo doesn't hate him any more so that's great!

They eventually get back into their groove and Tech makes him those kickass rocket boots to apologise for the whole... whatever that was. Words are hard, inventing is easy. He's still not 100% sure what went down, but Echo seems to have forgiven him, so he doesn't want to bring it up again. (He does, but it's like... a full year later, once he's definitely sure that Echo's not mad at him about it any more.)

Good thing that they do find their way back together, because one of Echo's legs breaks. And of course Tech's the one who immediately gets a little googly-eyed about finally being able to take Echo's leg apart. (He was strictly forbidden from Tinkering while Echo was wearing them, because Echo doesn't completely trust Tech to be able to resist the siren call of becoming a mad scientist. He adores the man, but he also knows Tech's weaknesses.)

Tech does indeed get a little mad scientist-y when he gets his hands all over those legs. He spends a week with a diet of space Red Bull, dry instant ramen, and no sleep, and comes up with Legs 2.0.11.8. He almost blows the ship up once or twice, but nothing seriously affects the life support systems, so it's fine, leave the lab alone.

Legs 2.0.11.8 are lighter, more durable, fit more comfortably, and have not only the fancy rocket boosters, but the ability to switch out normal treads for heavy ones and even climbing crampons! And a thousand other upgrades, but he's talking so fast that Echo genuinely has no idea what's going on. He figures that he can ask to read Tech's file about em later (yes he jokes about that, no Tech doesn't know if he can laugh).

When Echo first tries out his new legs, he loses his balance and goes straight into Tech's arms. Tech catches him and murmurs You're doing great, Echo.

Echo is running on an emotional high of having his legs back, having much better legs than the last ones, being caught by a hot nerd, and being praised by a hot nerd.

There's nothing to do about all that except kiss Tech.

He briefly thinks he's encountered a massive problem when Tech doesn't kiss back, and just stands there with a thoughtful look on his face. There's about a thousand things crossing Echo's mind in that moment, none of them exactly good. Can he get kicked off a squad for kissing someone???

Tech calmly says, "That was unexpected but perfectly acceptable. I commend your technique."

Echo isn't entirely sure what that means for a second, but then Tech pulls him in with both hands and tongues him, and Echo figures he doesn't need to ask.

The Batch is entirely unaware of this until three weeks later, when Echo joins them in the cockpit and sits right down in Tech's lap with his legs crossed. Wrecker wants to know why Echo's not in his usual co-pilot's chair. Echo just says figure it out and nudges Tech's chin up to kiss him.

Okay I've got so many headcanons too hold on

Tech's bunk is full of half-forgotten-about wires, metal sheets, pieces of rebar, loose screws, and the occasional shard of glass. Echo will not get into that bunk, they cuddle in Echo's hammock.

Tech will lay on top of Echo like a living weighted blanket and is perfectly happy to stay there for 12+ hours if he gets really invested in something on his datapad. This is often some design for another improvement to Echo's implants, so double bonus!

Strip chess

They love crosswords but they manage to get really competitive. Usually this means they make out about it, but sometimes they get mad at each other. Scrabble is banned after a few Incidents that resulted in yelling and a little blood, Hunter burned the tiles.

Tech keeps begging Echo into picking up dangerous insects, snails, frogs, and poisonous plants with his metal hand. Echo doesn't have to worry about getting bitten/poisoned and Tech can get a close-up look. Best of both worlds!

LEGO couple. If you haven't seen them for 16 hours? They got deeply invested into space version of some NASA set with 4000 pieces. Echo will bite you if you interrupt them.

Echo doesn't handle cold weather, it reminds him too much of being stuck as a POW. This means that the Batch leaves him on the ship on arctic missions but it also means Tech gets him eight pairs of fluffy socks because he read on the holonet that those are the best for keeping warm. Nobody's allowed to point out that Echo no longer has feet to keep warm. Echo wears them anyway and has favourites.

Sometimes Echo uses his USB hand to lock Tech's datapad when Tech won't go to sleep

He has a body pillow because it helps when his hips hurt. It's custom printed to look like Tech. Tech gets irrationally jealous over seeing Echo cuddle it.

Tech can do that finger skateboard thing and Echo uniroincally thinks it's really clever of him and admires his tricks

Tech makes Echo a new arm that has a human-shaped hand on the end so it has a wider range of function. The USB comes out of the tip of Echo's middle finger, at Echo's request.

Echo shakes hands/takes things from people with his metal hand. Tech is the only exception.

Tech likes crouching and crawling around, instead of walking 'normally'. There's been a few times that his head's popped up from where he's been crawling around on the floor like a snake, and Echo almost kicked him in the face because it scared him.

Echo can do some Black Widow shit with his new metal legs. He tries them all out on Tech cause it gets Tech real hot and bothered

There's been several times that Tech runs away from making out because he had a breakthrough thought on some project. Echo is always a little mad about it.

Tech snores. Loudly. Echo always turns off his hearing aids and lets that be everyone else's problem. He likes the way Tech's chest moves against his when they're sleeping together.

Echo keeps the lights off and his shirt on when they're getting intimate for years. Lot of self-esteem issues related to how his body looks. It's Tech's unfailing admiration for the occasional shirtless look, that eventually helps Echo start to accept himself.

Tech's name in Echo's phone is 'cyare' and Echo's name in Tech's phone is 'Echo 💙'

Echo once casually refers to a 'honey-do list' and Tech needs a reboot because holy shit he's honey!!!

Everyone can always tell when they were making out because Echo has hickeys everywhere. At first he was embarrassed about it but nowadays he shows them off.

Rex once commented 'oh, wow, did Echo get hit in the throat?' and Tech spat his water across the table. That was how Rex found out they were hooking up.

Rex said he was going to give Tech the shovel talk and Tech immediately started talking over him about the types of screws used to connect shovel heads. Rex never got around to his part.

Tech and Echo always walk holding hands. Sometimes the rest of the Batch stops or changes directions, and Tech doesn't notice with his datapad two inches from his face, so Echo gently tugs him in the right direction.

Sometimes the rest of the Batch didn't stop or change direction, and Echo is pulling him into an alley to make out.

Tech still hasn't lived down the time he came back from a detour with Echo and then had to go back to find his codpiece.

They stargaze whenever they're planetside. Tech loves infodumping about the stars and Echo loves to listen. Tech custom-built a two-person lawn chair so they can put their feet up. Echo's fallen asleep cuddled up to him more times than even Tech can count.

Echo has to be physically direct with flirting, cause if he just says something like "wow you're hot", then Tech just says "yes thank you", and keeps doing what he's doing. Gotta distract him from his project by kissing him or sitting in his lap or something before Echo can get to the words part.

Interviewer: "George, we'll come to you next. Now, it was a great race, but you've said this is a missed opportunity. But when you think of the progress you and Mercedes have made in the last few races, there must be a lot of positive that you can take away from here." George: "Yeah, absolutely, a hundred percent. I think if you told us ahead of this weekend pole position and P3, we may not have believed you, to be honest. But, as Max said, it was such a tricky race out there for everybody. You put a millimeter wide and you're off, and I think for me it was just one too many mistakes at key moments that cost us a shot of fighting with these two towards the end of the race." Interviewer: "The car seemed extremely quick in all conditions. Just talk us through the decision to give up track position to Piastri when you made that final stop for them." George: "Yeah, I wasn't… I was pushing to pit because I thought the new medium would have been really competitive at the end. I need to look at it because, to be honest, in hindsight I think we had really great pace… [to Verstappen and Norris] Were you on the medium? Yeah, those guys were on the medium and, me being on the hard, I think we'd have probably been in a really strong position to fight, but there's a lot of changes you'd have made if you know how things plan out in riches, respectively, but… You know, I'm happy with the progress we've made. Can we expect you and Mercedes to fight for poles and wins going forward? And can you talk us through those last few laps, that battle with Lewis? You seemed very determined to get that podium." George: "Yeah, I think Red Bull have struggled a little bit the last couple of races, yet they've still won two of the last three, so I expect them to take probably a small step when we go back to the European races on more conventional circuits. But I really think our performance step is true and it's real, and I think we can be in this fight with McLaren. Let's hope we can continue being in the fight with Max, and let's see with Ferrari. They obviously had a bit of an off weekend. But no, definitely those last three laps I was focused to get back on the podium, because I felt like I let the team down a bit, just losing sight of Max, and a few mistakes that put me in that position in the first place. And always with Lewis is really hard and fair. When you're racing with one of the greats you know that you can trust them, and that was, yeah, really great to see at the end."

[time jump] NOT SHOWN: Journalist: "Jake Boxall-Legge, Autosport. A question for all three: Obviously, we had that transition point with the intermediate tire when the safety car came out. Was that an opportunistic time for all of you? Do you think you could potentially have stayed out in the inters, or was it just going to turn to slicks by the time the rain came? Thank you." George: "Yeah, it's been the same the last three years, that the track dries everywhere except the first two corners. It's been a bit strange, considering it was resurfaced this year, and that was sort of the limit… Coming out the pits, it was so wet. Turn one and two was so wet, but to be honest the rest of the track was really dry. So yeah, whether, I dunno, drainage needs to be changed there or something, I don't know, but turn one and two was really the limiting factor."

Terrapin Soup Part 6 (1/2)

Leo hadn't been sneaking out anymore like he'd been for the past year, after his date with Usagi he started going to his house maybe twice a month but actually telling his family where he was going and checking in on occasion once he was there safely, or well. To better phrase it they'd hang out that often, sometimes they'd be in his house and other times they'd be around the hidden city as Usagi showed him around and they told each other stories of their epic battles. It'd only been maybe two months since their "first" date when they finally had enough free time to have Usagi over. Since usually one or the other had things or Leos family was doing other things it was hard to get everyone together for a night.

"Alright, I'll portal you over later tonight okay? Oh and don't mind the sewer smell, I mean Donnie made some upgrades to the vents and filters in the lair so it shouldn't smell but if it does just ignore it-" "Leo.." "And I mean you know Mikey's gonna try to hug you again right, like a lot, and he's really nosey, I mean they all are but Mikey's the most out of em so you can just push him off or tell him to stop he wont be offended by it." "Leo." "And so is dad now that I think about it- He's probably gonna act all tough and mean but he means well, oh and April might be there? She's like our best friend slash honorary sister and she's human but she's really chill so-" "Leo-!" Usagi grabbed Leos hands gently pulling him closer, "It's alright, really, you don't have to explain anything. I'm sure I'll have a wonderful time and we'll all get along just fine. Now, you go do what you need to and I'll be here when you get back. Okay?" Leo's expression softened hearing Usagi's reassurance, he was way too good for him... "Okay.. Okay you're right. I'll text you before I come back to get you." "Mhmm, I'll see you later then. Be safe." "You too." Leo pulled a sword from off his back opening a portal but felt a fluffy hand on his wrist before he was able to pass though. Leo turned to face Usagi, tilting his head to the side a little wondering why he was stopped. "Did I forget somethin-" He did in fact. He forgot a goodbye kiss, which Usagi suddenly (as in just now on a whim) deemed essential to their plans. He pulled Leo closer kissing his cheek, still trying not to be too forward and let go once he was satisfied.

"Now you may leave." "I-I uh... I" Looks like he broke Leo, congrats. Usagi chuckled and gently pushed against his plastron leading him to the portal, "Don't overthink it, though I hope you'll return the gesture when I go home tonight?" Leo could only nod as he stepped though the portal backwards, the bright blue obscuring his vision as he crossed, and once it disappeared it left him in the hallway in front of his room. Mikey peeked into the hallway having spotting the blue light that wasn't usually there. "Leo's back!!" He called, followed by a small stampede of his brothers coming to invade his privacy as per usual.

Leo stood frozen, his face still stuck in it's flustered expression as his brothers asked him a million questions which he heard none of as his mind was far too occupied with thoughts like;

Did that really just happen? How long had he been wanting to do that?

Should I have done it back?

What if he goes to kiss me next time not on the cheek?

What if I wanna kiss him not on the cheek?? I mean I do anyway but like should I ask, would he be okay with that? Oh god what my first kiss kiss is bad? Has Usagi had his first kiss yet??

"Leo??" "-What?" Donnie rolled his eyes as he finally managed to snap Leo from his thoughts after calling his name several times and tapping a fingers against his head as if to see if anyone was home up there. "We were talking to you Nardo. How'd it go?" "O-Oh.. Right. I uh.." He smiled softly glancing back to the wrist Usagi had grabbed to stop him, "It was good, really good. He'll be here tonight." Donnie nodded, typing something onto his wrist tech, possibly texting someone or giving a new command to SHELLDON, whatever it was it didn't really interest Leo to ask. He instead gently pushed past his brothers and headed towards the kitchen, "Hey do we have anymore soda left?" "There's just that orange Crush stash Mikey think's we don't know about behind the fridge"

"Hey-!" "That'll do, I need somethin' fizzy"

The night rolled around as normally as it could get between four mutant turtles living under New York city. Leo was a little more anxious then he'd been recently but his brothers (Raph mainly) reassured him that everything would go fine, and that everyone had agreed to be on their best behavior for Leo tonight. And once April arrived everything was falling into place, Mikey started cooking with Raph there to supervise while Donnie went and hid in his lab most likely seeing to any last minute upgrades to make the lair that much more presentable. April managed to corner Leo in the uncomfortable privacy of his own room and demand answers. Donnie however was not holed away seeing to the lairs maintenance, maybe he had been up until a moment ago but now he was much more occupied with the recording device he'd installed a while back, wanting to test out the new higher quality recording tech. And let's be honest he was never one to exactly care who's privacy he was invading when it came to his tech. Leo was already a perfect test subject so he selected the blue icon from his end and waiting for the audio to come in. Him and April were having some sort of talk about Leo's day. "Ooo and then what happened?" "He uh, well I was about to go home but then he pulled me back from the portal." "For what?" "..W-Well.. He um.." "Well..? ..Oh.. Oh! Leo did he kiss you?" "I mean- Yeah but it was only-" "Ohmigosh! That's adorable! Hold on hold on let me get my phone so I can capture this moment! Okay, tell me everything!"

Donnie turned the app off not wanting to hear about those kinda of things, he'd rather Leo tell that himself and even if he didn't exactly care he was smart enough to know when he shouldn't eavesdrop on a private conversation. He let out a little sigh and pushing himself away from his work space, spinning the chair around to face the other wall lined in another set of monitors. "Let's see.. Ventilations good, the security systems doing well.. There's... Hm.. That's-" Donnie scooted his chair forward more to inspect the words running across several screens. "Maybe.. I should get Raph." Back at the kitchen Mikey and Raph we're.. Not arguing (They most defiantly were) about what kind of food to make. "Mikey look my phone says that rabbits eat hay, they're vegetarians, it doesn't say nothin' about meat!" "He ate the pizza puffs and those has peperoni in them! And he said they were great! He's a yokai and they don't eat only what the animal parts eat y'know!" "Well why can't we just stick to what the internet says? We've got a bunch of fruits and veggies we can use!" "We're omnivores Raph I'm not gonna take the easy out and make a fruit salad for the seven of us! We have to have more variety!"

"Go ask Leo then he eats with him all the time- So much for my help" Mikey rolled his eyes and gently patted Raph's shell, "You tried and I appreciate that, we'll do part of your idea at least, but we can't have just hay and salads that's not balanced. I'll be right back, why don't you pick out some viggies and start washin em off okay? I'll go find Leo and ask."

"..Yeah okay."

Mikey left the kitchen and headed for Leos room, barging in without a second thought and interrupting Leo and Aprils chat. "Hey Leo what does Usagi eat?" Leo tensed up hearing the sudden question, quickly looking over to Mikey with a confused expression, "W-What do you mean?" "Like for dinner, what do you think he'd like? Raph says rabbits are vegan and eat hay but yokai aren't the same as the animals they're mutated from right?" "..O-Oh! Right! No no, he's not vegan or anything, I guess... I don't know what he'd like, I think he'd be willing to try anything really. He's not really picky or anything that I know of." "Maybe he'd like some turtle~?" April said with a laugh, gently nudging Leos arm despite his tense reaction. Mikey's eyes lit up at her implication and she smiled more as she gave a nod confirming Mikey's assumptions. "Okay okay" Leo said rolling his eyes, "Enough about this, you go cook, I should finish cleaning up around here" -_-_-_-

Mikey and April had left Leo to finish making the corners of the lair presentable since he was excited to show him around, he didn't clean much since it wasn't that bad with SHELLDON doing most of the cleaning but there were a few things he figured could use a bit of touching up like his growing piles of empty pizza boxes and comic books. After he was content with his work he got his phone out asking if Usagi was ready to be brought over and then texting his siblings as well letting them know he was going to get Usagi soon. Everything was good so Leo opened a portal and stepped through, when he looked around he realized the hidden city didn't exactly have a sunset, the sky was just the ground above them so it made sense but it was still a bit sad to think about.. Leo shook the thought from his mind as he approached the house, knocking on the door and taking a step back to wait. After a moment the door opened but he was a bit surprised to see someone beside Usagi answer. It was an older Lion yokai, grey hairs just starting to peek though his mane. He looked.. Not mad but not really kind either. Stoic was a good word. "O-Oh, hi um. I'm here for- Usagi!" He smiled as he saw him a few feet behind the man trying to make himself taller to see better. "Ah Leo!" "So this is him?" The lion asked, turning back to Usagi. If he was a bit younger the deep tone of his voice might've been attractive- Nope. no no no let's not go there, don't sexualize your boyfriends adoptive dad. Usagi nodded, his eyes glancing to Leo then back to his teacher, "Mhmm, the one I had dinner with not long ago. He's been.. Very good company. I'd like to keep him around."

Leo tilted his head a little, not really able to hear what they were talking about, but after another moment he turned back to face Leo. Looking him up and down like he didn't really approve but then stepped aside to let Usagi out. "Don't be gone long. We have things to do tomorrow." "Of course, I'll be home later tonight." "And you, kame. Hurt him, or keep him from his duties, and I will eat you." Leo tensed up but nodded, "I- Of course sir. Though I wouldn't be very filling, you'd have to fatten me up first haha" Leo tired to joke but he didn't seem phased by it.. He pulled his sword back out opening the portal and giving him a small wave anyway. But not to the lair, instead when they stepped through they were at the top of the New York Times building. A/N: Well, back again! Ending the new year on...well, not the happiest of notes, I'm sad to say 😅 But you all knew this was coming, as much as it pained me to write all this. Hang in there, lovelies! Love you all and a Happy New Year to each of you 💜

All chapters (Part 2) (Part 1)

Explanation: Rex and Kimber travel to the moon where Jesse is buried so Kimber can say her final goodbye.

Kimber was a little surprised the next morning to find she was still alone in the Marauder. Though, there was a blanket on top of her, so someone definitely had come while she'd been asleep. She had a strong suspicion that it had been Hunter. He'd probably gotten concerned when she hadn't come back to the Aurora. She felt a bit guilty for having cried herself to sleep, but she also knew Hunter most likely understood, hence why he'd left her alone.

The holopad with Jesse's message laid still in her palm and she clutched it tightly. Her emotions were beginning to swell again, but she inhaled deep through her clenched teeth and then released her breath slowly. She had to stay calm. She had to talk to Rex and she didn't want to get overly emotional again.

She stowed the holopad safely away in one of her packs in the room and then made her way back to the Aurora. She found everyone lounging around in the main area of the ship except for Tech and Irys. Omega was sitting on the floor making silly faces and noises at Kori, who was lying on his back in front of her while giggling and kicking his feet. They all heard her walk in and all eyes were on her right away. Hunter said her name as he saw her and went over to her quickly.

Placing his hands gently on her biceps, he looked into her eyes and asked, “How are you feeling? Are you okay?”

Kimber nodded. “I'm all right,” she said, her voice still a bit hoarse from crying the night before.

Hunter searched her face for any signs of deception. He could still sense a hint of heartbreak from her, but it wasn't as strong as it had been before. She didn't seem to be lying to him, which was good, at least. She genuinely seemed to be okay for now.

He cupped the nape of her neck and guided her head forward, touching her forehead to his. “I really am sorry, sweetheart,” he whispered.

“I know,” she said back.

As Hunter stepped back, Kimber was suddenly engulfed in a big hug from Kida, who said in her ear, “Rex told us what happened. I'm so sorry, Kimber.”

She hugged her friend back and replied, “Thank you, Kida.”

Then Rina came up and said, her voice low, “I remembered Jesse from Jakku. He was one heck of a soldier and a good guy. I know he was your friend and meant a lot to you. I'm sorry he's gone, boss lady. You gonna be okay?”

“I think I will be,” Kimber said back.

It was then Tech and Irys came in from the direction of the cockpit, debating with each other once again.

“No, Irys, our ship's hyperdrive does not require upgrading,” said Tech.

“It's an out of date model and, after the last debacle you informed me of with retrieving the lizard, it'll come to a point where even Echo can't fix it anymore,” Irys replied.

With an adjustment of his goggles, he stated, “Despite that instance, it is still fully functional and therefore, I see no reason to--” He heard a light chuckle and spotted Kimber as well as everyone else watching him and Irys and he ceased his arguing. Clearing his throat, he then said, “Kimber, it's good to see you back and my sincerest apologies for your loss. Are you well?”

“As well as I can be, yes,” Kimber replied, mustering up a small, reassuring smile.

“Do you need anything?” then asked Echo, a look of sympathy on his face.

She shook her head. “Not right now, but thank you.”

“Well, we're all here for you if you do,” said Wrecker. However, a few seconds later, he started groaning in pain and clutching at his head.

Kimber noticed this and forgot about her own troubles for a moment. “Is your head bothering you again, Wrecker?” she inquired.

“Yeah,” he said through a groan.

Rina immediately grew concerned. Something didn't feel right. Normally, a headache was nothing to be concerned about, but her senses were telling her otherwise that something was wrong with Wrecker.

He turned to Tech and said, “Tech, I need one of those med patches.”

“You used the last one,” Tech pointed out.

Rex, too, immediately picked up on the fact that something was wrong. Something he was all too familiar with. “What's wrong?” he asked suspiciously.

“Nothing. It's just a headache,” Wrecker answered through another groan.

“Which are becoming more frequent,” Echo added.

“Is that so?” Rex questioned, his eyes narrowing.

Then Rina spoke up in a more serious tone than anyone had ever heard from her, “Guys, I don't think it's just a headache. I can sense something abnormal about all of this. Something is very wrong.”

As Kimber looked down at her worried friend, Tech stated, mainly to Rex, “If you're concerned about the so-called inhibitor chips, don't be. Our deviant nature appears to have impeded their functionality. Except in Crosshair.”

Kimber inhaled sharply, both at the mention of Crosshair and the inhibitor chips. After what she'd heard in Jesse's message, she had a greater hunch that they were real and there was more to them than they all realized.

Then Rex asked with an anticipatory tone, “You're telling me you haven't removed your chips?”

“No, not yet,” answered Tech.

To everyone's surprise, Rex moved himself in front of the two kids, pushed aside his poncho and held his hand defensively over his holstered blaster, protective determination in his eyes.

Hunter saw this and put himself in front of the rest of his squad. “Rex?” he asked, a hint of warning and confusion in his voice.

“Rex, what are you doing?” then inquired Lex.

“Those chips make you a threat to everyone around you. Even her,” Rex told them, gesturing to Omega behind him. “You're all ticking time bombs.”

“Take it easy, Captain,” Hunter said, holding up a hand in defense.

Sounding more serious, Rex informed them all, “What's in your head is more dangerous than you can imagine. I've seen what happens when the chip activates, and I don't want to bury any more of our brothers.” His gaze found Kimber as he said that, remembering Jesse. Then his expression turned sad. “Trust me. It is not something you can control. I couldn't. It's a risk you do not want to take.”

Hunter looked at Omega, who looked both concerned and afraid. If what Rex said was true and they were a danger to even Omega with their chips still in their heads, then that meant they'd be a danger to Kimber, too. And Rina and Lex; everyone they cared about. He hadn't given much thought to the chips before, but after hearing Rex, he had a strong feeling in his gut that he couldn't ignore. He couldn't put his squad or his friends at risk.

“How do you suggest we get them out?” he asked Rex.

Seeing the Sergeant was willing to cooperate, Rex moved his hand away from his blaster and replied, “Good question. I'll be in touch.” Then he looked at Kimber again. “For now, you and I have somewhere we need to be.”

“What do you mean?” she asked back.

“I'm taking you to the crash site. You deserve to say goodbye to Jesse,” he replied.

She gasped. How did he know that's what she wanted? “But Rex, we can't. We have the chips to worry about. We have to find a way to get them out of the boys’ heads.”

“I know and we will,” said Rex. “Lucky for us, the moon the cruiser crashed on is in a nearby system. We can spare a few hours to a day to go there and then I'll bring you back. After that, I'll figure out a way to deal with the chips.”

Kimber wanted to continue debating with him about going, now that the threat of the inhibitor chips was looming over them, but then she felt someone take her hand. She looked to see Omega holding her hand and smiling comfortingly up at her.

“Go with him, Kimber. You need to so you can be happy again,” she reassured her. “We'll watch Wrecker while you're gone and make sure nothing happens. Everything will be okay, I promise.”

“She's right, princess,” added Lex, who gave a flourish of her vibroblade. “If anything goes down, we'll take care of it.”

Rina saw that and shot back, “Come anywhere near the big guy with that knife and you'll find it in one of your kneecaps.”

“Relax, Rina. It's just a precaution. One I'm certain we won't need,” Lex told her, sheathing her blade.

There was a hand on Kimber's shoulder and she found Hunter's loving gaze upon her. “Go, my love. We'll be fine.”

Having reassurances from her friends made Kimber feel a bit better about going with Rex. While she still felt uneasy about leaving her boys right now, she now felt sure that if things were to happen while she was gone, they would still be okay.

“All right,” she accepted.

“Then we'll leave right away. I'll take you to my ship,” said Rex, already making his way to the Aurora's exit.

“Wait, Rex!” called Kida, running after him. When she caught up to him, she said quietly, “I…I don't know when I'll see you next, but…I'll be thinking of you while you're gone.”

He softly caressed her cheek and replied, “And I'll be thinking of you...like I always do. I'm sure I'll see you again soon.” Then he walked away.

Kimber faced Hunter and took his hands. “Promise me you'll all be safe,” she said.

“I promise,” he responded. “Wrecker will be fine and should anything go wrong, we'll handle it. Don't worry about us.” He kissed her brow and then said, “Let us know when you're coming back. I hope this brings you the peace you need.”

“Thank you again for your support,” she said gratefully. “I'll see you soon.” Then she gave him a kiss on the lips and afterwards, ran off to follow Rex.

Both Kimber and Rex ejected out of hyperspace in Rex's stolen BTL-B Y-wing fighter-bomber that he'd used to escape the cruiser crash. He was flying the ship while Kimber was seated in the gunner's bubble turret, where she could admire the wonders of traveling at lightspeed through the clear dome that covered her. They entered the atmosphere of the moon the crash site was on. As they passed through the clouds, they beheld a barren, desolate landscape and up ahead, they could see the wreckage of a Venator cruiser.

“There it is. The Tribunal,” said Rex over the ship's comms as they spotted the wreckage.

Kimber could feel a pit forming in her stomach. She dreaded what they would see when they landed. That and she'd also had time to think and wonder as they'd flown to the planet and now, she had a question she needed to know the answer to.

“Jesse told me in his message that something happened to the Clones that made them lose control; that he felt his body and mind were taken over by something he couldn't see,” she said. “He said he'd even turned his blasters on you and your Commander, labeling you both traitors. On top of that, I remember seeing the Imperial file with Tech on when this crash was reported…and it was around when Order 66 happened.” She took a deep breath and leaned a bit forward to get a better look at the back of Rex's head below her. “Rex…I need to know…was everything that happened here because of Order 66?”

She saw him lower his head and then heard him answer, “Yes.”

Even though it still hurt to hear, she at least was glad to know the truth. “There was more to the story of this crash than just that Sith prisoner getting loose and destroying the hyperdrive. Please Rex…tell me what really happened,” she pleaded.

As they continued on towards the crash site, he explained to her, “What I did tell you was true…but yes, there was more to it. The order came through from the Emperor and I could suddenly feel my will slipping away from me. I managed to fight it for but a few seconds; enough time to warn my Commander, Ahsoka Tano, before my troops and I fired on her. She's a very skilled Jedi and was able to evade us. The next thing I knew, I was hunting her through the ship and I couldn't stop myself. I was conscious of everything I was doing and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I'm sure Jesse said about the same in his message, didn't he?”

“He did, yes,” she answered sadly.

“I thought as much,” he said back.

It was then Kimber realized that the ship was moving closer to the ground and that they had reached the crashed Venator cruiser. As it landed, the nervous feeling inside her grew even more. She wasn't sure if she had the strength to leave the Y-wing and face the reality of Jesse's death. At least, Rex was with her and would be there to help her through this.

The dome hatch opened above her and she climbed carefully out of the ship. As her feet met the ground and her eyes lifted to the sight before her, she felt her heart twist painfully and her balance faltered. Her legs buckled, but lucky for her, she was caught in Rex's arms.

“Whoa, easy there, soldier. I've got you,” he consoled her, holding her around the shoulders.

“Rex…I don't think I can do this,” she admitted anxiously.

“Hey, it's like what you told me with Kida: the longer you wait, the harder it'll be for you to face this,” he said. “Don't worry, I'll be with you as much as you need me.”

“Could you…could you at least walk over there with me?” she requested timidly.

Rex squeezed her shoulders comfortingly and said, “Let's go.”

A couple yards away, Kimber saw the burial site of the Clones: dozens of grave marker sticks spread across the ground in front of the demolished cruiser with helmets placed on top of them. Some of the helmets were white while others were painted orange with a white symbol she'd never seen before. The sight of all the Clone graves tore at her heart.

Solemnly, she said aloud as she scanned the line of grave markers, “The Clones didn’t die for the Republic…they died with it.”

Though, what broke her heart immediately was the blue Clone helmet with the Republic symbol drawn on that was front and center from the rest.

With every step closer, she could feel her heart sinking lower and lower and the feeling in her body fading away to numbness. This couldn't be real, but she knew it was. She and Rex both stopped in front of Jesse's grave marker and finally, she couldn't hold herself up anymore. Rex carefully guided her down to the ground, keeping a strong hold on her arms, and knelt beside her. Tears sprang to her eyes and her quiet crying began.

“Do you want me to stay?” she heard Rex ask her in her sorrowful haze.

Her eyes closed and a few more tears fell down her cheeks. “No…I need to do this alone now,” she told him, a break in her voice. “Thank you for getting me this far, Rex.”

The Captain laid a hand on her shoulder and simply responded, “Take your time, however long you need. I'll wait for you at the Y-wing.” With that, he stood up and walked away, letting his hand linger on her shoulder until he could no longer reach.

There on the cold, dirt-covered ground with the wind gently caressing her face and hair, Kimber knelt in front of the grave of her dear friend, Lieutenant Jesse, her hands over her heart and her eyes gazing up at his helmet. She recalled the moment she met him at 79’s over a year ago.

His eyes found Kimber and they widened ever so slightly. “Well, I haven’t seen you around here before.”

Kimber realized when he turned his head to look at her that Jesse had the Republic symbol tattooed over most of his head, originating on the right side of his face…and her heart ached for a brief second as it reminded her of Hunter.

She introduced herself by name to him and he replied, “Oh, the Bad Batch girl!”

“Oh stars…!” Kimber groaned, through she still grinned. “Is that really what you guys know me as?”

“I mean, yeah, kinda,” he said with a shrug.

Then Kix told him, “Apparently, she’s here by herself and she’s looking for Rex.”

Removing his arm from Kix, Jesse then explained, “Oh, well we got back from a mission earlier today and so Rex is currently at a briefing, but he said he’ll meet up with us here later.” Then he flashed her a smile. “You’re welcome to stay with us until he gets here.”

Kimber smiled back a little shyly and simply said, “Sure, yeah.”

“Great! My name is Jesse, by the way, in case you missed Kix saying it,” he said.

She chuckled. “I didn’t, but it’s a pleasure to meet you all the same. I wouldn’t mind your guys’ company for a while.”

“Sounds good to me,” said Kix.

Jesse took the seat on her opposite side and declared gladly, “Well then, Kimber…how about we buy you a drink?”

It felt like so long ago now that she’d met him. That night, he’d told her “any friend of Rex’s is a friend of ours” and he further proved that by offering to train her for a few months because Rex couldn’t. At that time, she had no idea of the journey she was about to undertake. Not only just the intense training akin to ARC Trooper training, but the relationship and friendship she would build with Jesse over the three months she spent on Coruscant with him. Memories of their time together flashed across her mind.

The nights they’d spend watching holoshows.

The one night he told her about Umbara and Fives.

The mission on Rhen Var when she, Rex and Kix rescued him after being injured…the same night he confessed his feelings and kissed her for the first time, but she had to reject him.

Their final mission on Zeffo when she returned to the Bad Batch and said goodbye to him…for what would be the very last time. She remembered their final words to each other:

Jesse then stepped back and pointed a finger at her, smirking as he then stated, “When this war is over, our holoshow nights need to be a thing again. You can bring the boys, it will be fun!”

She chuckled. “Oh, the thought of the Bad Batch having a holoshow night with a reg…,” she voiced aloud. “I think that would be marvelous. Though, you have to promise me that you’ll get out of this war alive first.”

“I will only if you do, too,” he countered. He extended a hand out for her to shake.

Kimber took Jesse’s hand and grasped it tightly, sealing their promise to one another that they would do everything they could to stay alive through to the end of the Clone Wars.

“I’m sure our paths will cross again someday, but until that time: take good care of yourself, Lieutenant Jesse,” she said with a grin.

Grinning at her in return, he replied, “Until we meet again, Kimber Sallaros. I’ve had many missions in my time…but training you has been the best one by far.”

Kimber finally broke out into sobs of heartbreaking pain, her hands coming up to her face. “Oh Jesse…why did it have to end like this?” she asked aloud. “We promised each other we would survive the war and we would see each other again. Why did it have to be like this?” After letting herself cry for a few more short moments, she calmed down just a little and then looked back up at his helmet through blurred, tear-filled vision. “I can’t fathom how terrified you must’ve been in your final moments on this cruiser…and yet you remained steadfast and brave so you could send a farewell message to me. You always were one of the bravest soldiers I’ve ever known. I wish I had your courage, especially now. Facing this…the cold reality of war and loss…is maybe the greatest challenge I’ve had to face so far in my new life. After my parents, I haven’t lost anyone else to death until you…and the pain I feel is so great, I don’t know how I’m able to bear it. I know you would tell me that I’m strong enough to handle anything, but I don’t feel strong.”

She was silent for a moment, trying to figure out what to say and how to say it. There was so much she wished she could say, but she would be there for eternity if she said it all. Would it even matter, though? Could Jesse even hear her, wherever he was? For now, she had to believe he could. It was the only way she would get through this.

Then she spoke, “You’re part of why I am who I am today, Jesse. I left my squad in an uncertain time so I could become better for them and you helped me achieve that. You shaped me into the better soldier I am now. You were a friend and confidant when I needed one. You truly were one of the greatest friends I have and ever will have. I just...can’t believe you’re really gone. We were both supposed to survive the war…but as Hunter told me, such promises like that never have any guarantees in times of war. I suppose we both should’ve known better.” Her eyes drifted down the ground in front of her; to the mound under which she knew Jesse’s body laid and she pressed her hand down on the earth, her tears sinking into it. “I can’t thank you enough for all you did for me. For your friendship and your love. I know I told you I loved you in a different way…but that was a lie. The truth is…I did love you, Jesse.” Her tears started falling faster as she wept once more. “I loved you…I loved you more than I ever should have. I still wanted to be with Hunter and yet, I fell in love with you anyway. I’m sorry…I’m sorry I lied, but I knew it wouldn’t have benefited either of us if I admitted the truth. I couldn’t give you false hope and I couldn’t betray Hunter like that. I know you hoped things between him and I would eventually work out and well…I’m pleased to say that they have. We’re back together and we hope to get married one day. I’m happy, just like you wanted me to be.” Then her eyes lifted back to his helmet and she reached up, softly laying her hand upon the cold, plastoid surface. “Even so, you will always hold a special place in my heart and in my memories for the rest of my life. In the months I spent with you, you and I lived in a world that was all our own. That’s something I’ll never forget. You gave it your all and in the end, it still cost you your life. I thought it was hard enough to let you go on Zeffo, thinking I’d still see you again one day. Now…I have to let you go for good. I won’t forget everything you taught me. I’ll keep you close in my heart…and you’ll never be far from me, just like you said.”

Kimber’s hand left his helmet and came to her chest just above her heart as she closed her eyes, pushing out a couple more stray tears. The wind seemingly died down in the moment and she focused on the silence, hoping to quell her sorrow enough to move on. However, there was something in the wind she could hear…it sounded almost like a voice.

A voice whispering…her name.

Her head shook, brushing that off as just her imagining things in her grief. The only other person on this moon was Rex and he was back at his Y-wing. They were alone. There was no one else on this moon alive.

Then she felt a warm sensation on her face…like a hand softly caressing her cheek. It was a touch she recognized.

She gasped and her eyes flew open.

There was no one in front of her, but the feeling was unmistakable. For but a second, she almost swore she could see his face as if through a veil, but when she blinked, there was nothing there. Yet the warmth she felt on her cheek remained.

“Jesse?” she whispered, reaching up to her cheek and lightly touching her skin.

She didn’t know how it was possible, but she was certain Jesse was there with her. She could feel his presence near her. More than that, she could feel his love, his sorrow and his comfort. There was no longer a voice in the wind, yet she knew in her mind and in her heart what he was wanting to convey to her.

He was at peace…and she would be all right.

Another tear fell from her eye, but this was time, it wasn’t a tear of grief. It was a tear of joy and gratitude.

“I’ll miss you so much,” she then said, “but at least now, I know you’re at peace. I can set you free now so I can strive to find my own peace, as well. I’ll continue to make you proud.”

Right then, she could feel a reassuring hand on her shoulder…but she knew immediately it wasn’t Rex’s. It felt similar to the hand she’d felt on her cheek yet it wasn’t from Jesse’s spirit. It was someone else’s; another familiar friendly presence she’d only encountered once before in a dream.

“Fives?”

Even though there was no audible reply, she could feel deep down that she had supposed right. Not only was Jesse there with her, but so was Fives. In her heart, she could feel the message that he also was trying to give her from the other side: that he would take care of Jesse for her and they both would continue to watch over her.

It didn’t make sense how she was experiencing any of this, but Kimber wasn’t going to push any of it aside. She could palpably feel the presence of two deceased Clones with her, even though she couldn’t see them. They were there to comfort her in her time of grief to let her know they were all right and she would be, too. Perhaps this was the work of the Force, she wondered, even though she didn’t believe much in the Force. It was the only possible explanation that she could think of.

Feeling the omnipresence of her Clone friends, Kimber inhaled deeply, letting their comfort and strength empower her. Everything was going to be okay. She was going to be okay. Their reassurance was enough to give her the bravery to move on; to face everything else that awaited her future with courage unparalleled.

With newfound conviction, she stated out loud, “I promise you, Jesse and Fives: I will finish what you both started. I will do whatever it takes to bring the Empire down so I can avenge both your deaths. I won’t let your sacrifices be in vain. The Empire will pay for what they’ve done to the Clones. I will continue fighting. For my squad, for Hunter, for all the Clones and for you two, even if I have to give my own life.” She looked up to the blue sky above her and a small smile curled up on her lips. “I won’t let you down. I’ll keep going and do whatever it takes. I swear it.”

Then she stood up and took one last look at Jesse’s helmet, placing both hands on either side of it as if she were cupping his face and lifting it from the wood it sat upon. She looked over the helmet carefully, taking in all the details she could before leaving it here forever, for she had a feeling she wouldn’t see it again. At least, not for a long time, if anything.

“Thank you, Jesse…for everything,” she said softly. “At least we got to share this one last day, my friend, even if I couldn’t see you.” She leaned down, placed a kiss upon the brow of the helmet and then brought it up to her forehead in reverence as she whispered, almost like a prayer, “I love you…and I’ll miss you. Goodbye, Jesse.”

Having felt as though she said all that needed to be said, Kimber returned Jesse’s helmet to its place and turned away. Even though her heart still felt heavy, it did feel as though a large part of her burden had been lifted. It was enough for her to feel as though she could take the next step forward in healing from this loss. It still would take time, but this was just the beginning.

As she took a step forward, her foot nudged something she hadn’t noticed before. When she looked down, she found there was a lightsaber on the ground. She thought it was curious for a second that there was a lightsaber there, but then she remembered Rex had said both he and his Jedi Commander, Ahsoka Tano, had buried all the Clones. Had she dropped it on accident…or had it been left here on purpose? After Order 66, the Jedi were all being hunted across the galaxy. Maybe she’d left it on this moon to keep herself safe. There were probably various reasons as to why it had been left that Kimber knew she’d most likely never learn the answer to. For a brief moment, she considered picking it up and taking it with her, but right away, she realized that would be a mistake. If anyone were to spot her with a lightsaber, she would automatically be labeled a Jedi and hunted down. As if being labeled a deserter to the Empire and already being hunted wasn’t bad enough. No, it was best to leave the Jedi relic there and she decided to meet back with Rex.

Rex saw her coming and climbed out of the cockpit to greet her. “You okay?” he asked her.

She nodded. “I am now,” she said. “I don’t know how, but somehow...I just know everything’s going to be all right. Thank you again for bringing me here.”

He bowed his head in respect.

It was then she noticed that there was a scar on his head that she somehow hadn’t noticed before. It was on his right side; the same side she recalled Wrecker saying would hurt when his headaches would hit.

“Rex…did you get your chip removed?” she inquired, pointing to the scar.

His hand came up to trace over the scar for a second and he answered, “I did.”

“How?” she asked.

He gestured to the wreckage behind her. “It was on that cruiser, not long before it was kicked out of hyperspace.”

“Tell me the rest of what happened before the ship crashed,” she said.

Then he explained, “Before I lost all control, I gave Commander Tano a message that I knew she’d understand. I told her to find Fives; to find the files on him and everything that had happened with him before he was killed.”

Hearing Fives being mentioned suddenly made his presence from earlier make sense. Then she remembered the vague things he had told her in her dream from a long time ago, how he’d warned her that something was coming that she’d need to be prepared for. Something he couldn’t stop.

Then it all pieced together in her mind. “Fives had discovered the existence of the chips, hadn’t he?”

Rex nodded. “He did. I didn’t believe him at the time, but I still made a report about it just in case. Turns out, I had been right to do so. As I felt my mind slipping away after Order 66 had been given, I knew immediately Fives had been right and knew I could count on Ahsoka to figure out what to do. She found my report and learned about the chips.”

He then went on to tell Kimber how Ahsoka had actually set their Sith prisoner free herself to distract the Clone soldiers hunting her while she subdued Rex and had taken him to the med bay on the cruiser, where she found the chip and surgically removed it. Shortly after that was when they tried to escape, and had been cornered in the hangar by Jesse and his troops before the hyperdrive got destroyed and the ship crashed.

“That’s the whole story,” he then said to finish it off.

“I see,” she said, taking it all in as she looked back at the destroyed Venator behind her.

“In order to remove your squad’s chips, we’d need some higher-grade medical equipment. Only bigger medical facilities would have those and most of those, I’m sure are under Imperial command now. And Kamino is definitely not an option either,” he told her.

Then she commented, “It’s too bad we can’t get onto just another Venator like this one. If you were able to get yours out on one, then I’m sure others would have the same medical equipment, too. Unfortunately for us, I’m sure all of the other Venators left are also under Imperial control.”

As she looked back, she saw his eyes gradually grow larger, like he’d just thought of something. “Maybe not all of them,” he said. Then he took her by the shoulders and declared, “Kimber, you’re a genius!”

“Uh…thank you?” she said, confused. “What are you thinking, Rex?”

As he got ready to climb back into the Y-wing fighter, he responded to her, “We can't use a Venator cruiser that's still in commission…but we can use a decommissioned one that isn't being used by the Empire. Call your boys. I know exactly where we need to go to get their chips removed.”

Ngl I don't know how to feel about winds of anthos. I have so many thoughts about the game after finishing the main story line (dont have the kid yet but it's incubating).

Long post after the break.

I've seen a lot of praise for the game and I get it, I really liked the game in the beginning too, could hardly put it down, but after finishing the main story it's kinda lacking (which makes sense, I mean I finished the game, it's gonna be out of content at some point). But after a few days of reflection on the game I've decided it's just not that great? Am I missing something?

Like, I get it, I like the open world exploration, I felt so claustrophobic in pioneers of olive town and even the wonderful life remake, but once you've seen it all that's it, the land is barren too which makes it feels so boring and it's not interesting to look at either. One thing that pissed me off a lot was the fucking mountains that are so hard to navigate, but I think that's really just a me problem.

Then there are the characters and honestly o can't even tell them apart at this point, they are all (most of them) default nice with no personality, especially the bachelorettes, I always feel like fictional women lack personality in general. The only character (apart from doc) who stood out was Nickolai and only because he's autistic (blunt and not very nice). And don't get me started on the design, Arnold with the "one two buckle my shoe" and Ella looking like a pokemon trainer when she's supposed to be an artist from a swiss inspired town from what I can tell. She just doesn't look like she belongs in the town and I don't know if it's further explain through her flower events but she doesn't seem to hate living here or hate the town so I don't understand why she has to stand out so much.

Speaking of flower events, those were boring as well. I can hardly remember what even happened in them, all I remember was being a little disappointed when I realized all the 6 music notes events (the one after you start dating) are all the same, you go to a secluded location, look over the town and chat. That's it, for all of the 3 guys I started dating (again, I don't know if it's different with the other marriage candidates but I doubt it).

I felt like the pace was off too, I don't know when you're supposed to finish the main story line, I finished in winter of the first year I think, it was very early on and I only played for 30ish hours and finished the game. I found the tasks so tedious I wanted to get them over with asap, I was so done with the characters being like "thanks for getting us this ore, now onto your next mission, get this other ore, kay, thanks, byeee" maybe because the main quest was under the request tab with all the other requests but it didn't feel special enough. I also hated having to sift through this long list of requests that never seemed to get shorter since every morning, there would be mail of some villager needing something. It was just so annoying, I just wanted to clear my requests once and start anew but the game really didnt want me to I guess.

As I was saying earlier, I finished the game in winter of year one (or spring year two I don't remember). Great, now what? I'm still not married because I couldn't advance my relationship with Westley until I fixed the harvest goddess spring, so I worked on that (and Nickolai and Arnold). I saw what I needed for the house upgrade and did that, yay bigger house. Checked the guide (God bless FOGU) to see why I didn't have a double bed/two beds and I need another upgrade??? That's 250,000 gold not counting the pain of getting high quality lumber boards and square, having to resort to buying them with added another (approximately) 60,000. I grinded by fishing and finally got married in summer. I have to wait a season to realize I'm pregnant. I have to wait another season to give birth. Then, another season for the bitch to crawl and then, a season later, it's able to walk and even talk. Right now, I have to wait for another year for the baby to start being useful to me (by which I mean it can talk and explore the farm). I'm already bored by having to maintain the farm, I wake up and water the cows or whatever, I usually go to bed at 8 or 9 am because I wanna get this over with at this point.

(I just realized you can't use your camera indoors, how will I take cute baby pics of the fucker? I wanted my whole camera roll full of blurry baby pics.)

Am I playing the game wrong? Why am I not enjoying the game the way others seem to enjoy it? It's tedious for me now, maybe I just need a break from farming.

I feel like you need to be a very specific person to fully enjoy this game, and it ain't me. I miss animal parade.

Thoughts about all three (i know this is a skib only blog but its MY blog and i get to do what i want with it,,,,) below the cut

Seems like a simple lazer cannon is enough to kill the average astro troops with medium difficulty. They're extremely powerful, but as easy as it is to feel like they're indomitable walls that can't be crushed, enough firepower seems to shred them up haha

SWAT and the boomerang sickles!! Absolutely badass

Not sure why the sentimental, calm and comforting yet eerie music was playing as that one large cam came in. It might be the repaired lazer large cam, and if so, that IS great, but I'm not sure if it warrants that soundtrack choice.

This whole shot just SCREAMS "We are SO back" I genuinely got so hyped when I seen it

CAMERAWOMAN UPGRADES❗️❗️ She is SO badass now. She floats like a mindflayer too bwehehe. I love how the protection she has on the top of her cam makes it look like she's frowning - same with TCam and his dented lens. It really gives the cams this "dont fuck with me or I'll turn you into mincemeat" look/vibe and I love it

that pushing down the glasses plus the "DAMNN!" from rambo was absolutely brilliant I'm giggling so hard at that bit,,,,

Camerawoman is confirmed to have been Cathy! I remember (the very amazing mutual of mine) @/lensman-arms-race saying something before about preferring the robots as having always been robots and honestly yeah I'm gonna have to agree here. I like it when machines are always beep boop beep boop, not organic flesh -> beep boop beep boop, but don't get me wrong I'm still fine with it lmao. in canon they may have been humans, but in my head they've always been little machines /silly

Floor 2 is AMAZING HELLO??? I can see why LSplash took like. How long has it been. A year? Two? However long into cooking this. Haven't made it past door 134 yet as I haven't played the game in AGES and I have a major skill issue but anyways. I didn't know its name before getting the badge so I called it Bobby as it just felt right and the name has stuck ever since

How do the parent-child bonds work compared to canon? Are there XCOM quirks you like to apply to these relationships as well as between different characters? Which character (player or NPC) are you pleased to give more screen time to? And The most important question So important it’s getting it’s own reply Is Ramón’s moustache real?

You mean relationship wise or like actual metaphysically? Either way. Obviously without the egg event and the random assignment and stuff, as well as the more gradual (and much narratively later) introduction of the eggs, things are gonna be a bit different. Tasks are also not governmentally assigned, and the only thing actually necessary to ensure their survival is yk feed them. Other people checking in on the eggs starts much earlier, meaning they are for the most part closer to their aunts and uncles than canon. No less close to their parents, but they're all more familiar with them. Now instead of the random assignment, and the parents picking the egg, instead the eggs are picking the parents. Remember my mention of vague psychic connection between all of them? Wellllll the eggs are baby psychics who may or may not accidentally psychically imprint on adults they like. For the most part this is a few days /after/ the kid gets taken home, though if they're included Memory egg it'll be pretty instantaneous on the first adult she sees for... reasons related to what the bond is, what the eggs are, and the circumstances she's found in. But like. Usually it takes 3-4 days. Chayanne and Bobby took a bit over a week, despite being kinda clingy during that time, because at that point none of the eggs have met humans before, and they don't feel safe. For the later ones those two can reassure them, and its a bit easier. This does also shake up egg parent relationships though lol. Some do still get together because of the eggs, or never are anyway, but Phil and Missa are already skirting around each other, and Marianna and Slime are having nasty-type sex from about the moment Mariana steps onto the ship (and had been before either of them were there), Fit and Spreen are already exes by a few years (and Fit still asks Spreen for baby name advice...), Dan is already dead... I think Foolish and Vegetta are the only couple their kid actually gets together this way around?

Okay so! Because I'm playing with DLC turned on, every character has a randomised relationship value with every other character, upgrading their relationship rank by that value every mission they go on together. I am very much not using these for romantic, but did fiddle a bit in the back end to make them at least make sense. When these bonds are upgraded it allows the two units to do things like transfer actions between each other and make each other immune to mental status effects when next to each other, buuuuut also means that if one of them gets paticularly badly injured the other /will/ freak the fuck out. Like. Gets hit with a critical/killed (though save scumming avoids that)/made to bleed out/knocked out sort of badly injured. These are coming into play, though there aren't as many sets as I would have liked simply because they're fiddly and take a while. Can't remember all of them, but of those I can there are... Bagi & Tina (romantic) Phil & Etoiles Foolish & BBH Roier & Missa Baghera & IronMouse Mariana & Slime (unsure if romantic but definitely sexual) and, of course, Tazercraft (You can see I mostly tried to steer things, but when Baghera and Mouse wanted to I was like you know what fuck it you go girls) While most of these are just synching up over time and becoming slightly attached through the psychic network, Tazercraft's I'm writing as a bit more extreme. Because of course. It's not exactly wrong to call the bonds a type of soulmate, but they wouldn't consider it as such. Tazercraft are different. Their bond in game is exactly the same, but in the fiction they've had it for years, and they're capable of full, controlled telepathic communication with one another. It's the only /natural/ bond in the group, the others all being forced via combat in the first forming and intensive training for latter parts. This /does/ come with the downside of if they're ever cut off from each other their mental and physical health will both be badly effected, and spiral particularly quickly, something which doesn't happen for the rest. Because of this those two work out about the egg psychic attachments first - as they're already familiar with the vibes. For purposes of writing I may also make a couple of them three way. But we'll see if I write it.

Hmmmmm if I can get him down I'm excited for some of the stuff with Aypierre? Though more his backstory than the main plot. Main plot he's the science guy. Backstory he performed brain surgery on himself to free himself from Federation mind control via brain chip, during a brief power cut meaning he both was free enough to do it and had no lights to see by, and frankly that alone is pretty cool. Then once we add Ayrobot into the mix... Fun times! Most of the focal characters I already write more than others because I'm comfy with them and oh boy my notes are 90 pages long >.<

Ramón’s mustache is indeed real! It may or may not be made of hair, however.

Oh here's a fun game: rate the BG3 companions (and your player character too if you so choose) on what you think their spice tolerance/spice threshold are (in my case, I interpret spice tolerance as how well you react to the heat whereas spice threshold is how hot one can go before they feel something or start reacting poorly)

My thoughts:

Lae'zel: very high tolerance, mid to low threshold. The latter is very debatable because I don't know what githyanki eat wherever they are. I'm just going off the assumption that maybe they don't devote a lot of time to cultivating spices and herbs, though I think githyanki would be up for spice challenges. Overall grade is very high on the scale in spite of relatively low threshold because my girl is a tough son of a bitch and she can sweat almost anything out no problem

Shadowheart: high tolerance, mid to low threshold. Again, I don't know what Sharrans eat generally so threshold is arguable. Could it be used as a torture implement? Sure. But I like to imagine people who eat spicy food like to enjoy life and have some fun, which Sharrans... don't seem to have. Overall grade: below Lae'zel, but in the same general bin

Astarion: THE LOWEST ON THIS LIST. LOW TOLERANCE, LOW THRESHOLD. WE DON'T EVEN NEED TO DISCUSS THIS. NEXT QUESTION.

Gale: low tolerance, mid to low threshold. Man doesn't even like eating vegetables. How the fuck can he handle a habenero? He edges out above Astarion but is that really an accomplishment? EDIT: I have been notified that in the romance he talks about liking spicy food--along with a very funny comment involving spice and his mother--so I am upgrading him to high average on the scale, with high tolerance, mid threshold. Congrats Gale you are so damn lucky to have a lawyer as your fan

Wyll: mid to high tolerance, mid to low threshold. He's tough to judge; I'm willing to put him in the same bin as Shadowheart at his highest. Again, I don't know what he regularly ate growing up; he was a Duke's son so he probably had access to more diverse foods than the average citizen, but do the nobility regularly eat spice? Who can say? In the end I would put him solidly in the middle ranking, but this can change.

Karlach: HIGHEST ON THE LIST. Very high tolerance, high threshold. Would probably be one of those people who would eat two Carolina Reapers in that challenge for the lulz. Do I think she would still feel it? Yeah. But would she take it like a champ? Absolutely.

Halsin: high tolerance, mid to low threshold. This one's tough, the threshold especially, very arguable. But I want to believe in him because the man is 350+ years old, he's been around, he's seen some shit, probably eaten a lot of different kinds of stuff in his travels. I believe he could absolutely sweat it out at the very least. Middle of the pack.

Minthara: high tolerance, high threshold. I'm gonna be real, I've never recruited her so these are all off of general impressions but I mean come on. I would put her second only to Karlach.

Jaheira: mid tolerance, mid threshold. I feel like in BG1 and 2 she probably would have had a higher ranking, but she is older now and I know from personal experience sometimes you get to an age where you just can't eat the same kind of stuff you did when you were younger. Middle of the pack again, I'd put her with Wyll.

Minsc: I have no idea. Mid to high tolerance, mid to low threshold? I definitely think he could sweat it out well but who knows how hot the hamster man can go? I'm gonna put him in average because I'm just HMMMM???

My Tav, Kainé: high tolerance, high threshold, because I am incapable of making a character anything else I guess. Not as high on the ranking as Karlach and Minthara, but probably around Lae'zel's place because spicy food was just a staple growing up for her. She'd probably shed tears if she had a Caroline Reaper or ghost pepper but she would absolutely still go for it if she had to to prove a point.

Interviewer Questions

Interviewer: Lando, coming to you, can we start by getting your thoughts on a few more years working with Oscar?

Lando: (Smiles) Yeah, first, I mean, congrats to him. I think any contract that allows you to be longer in Formula 1, I think, is a great thing, so… he's performed, he's done everything he's needed to, and probably, I think, exceeded most people's expectations from what's he's been able to achieve already this season.

He's pushed me a lot, it's not a nice thing, (smiles). It's not what I want, but, yeah, he's done a very good job, so congrats to him for another few years. And yeah, we've had a fun first half of the season, and it's a lot of progress, and I think, for him to be part of that progress and to hopefully continue that into next year, '25 and '26 for himself is gonna be, yeah, something to look forward to.

Interviewer: You say he's pushing you a lot, when you look at the whole grid, how strong is McLaren's driver line-up now?

Lando: (Smiles) The strongest.

Interviewer: And how strong is your car? You had the upgrades in Singapore, do you think that will translate here?

Lando: Yes… it's tough to say, I don't know (smiles). I wanna believe so, I think everything did what it was meant to do, and I think we definitely took some steps forward. I don't think that we're confident in saying we're as quick as Red Bull, I think Red Bull will probably be dominant this weekend.

But I think comparing us to Ferrari or Mercedes, Mercedes have been just a lot more consistent than what we have. We've still fluctuated quite a bit; on a good weekend, we can be very, very good, and maybe a little bit ahead like we've seen in Silverstone and things like that.

But, on the whole, Mercedes have probably been the second best car this season, but then Ferrari, and then us so far. So we're getting there, but it's still a very different circuit to Singapore with these upgrades, so there's still things for us to find out and analyse from Suzuka.

Interviewer: You say Red Bull are gonna bounce back, how sure can you be of that?

Lando: (Smiles) Pretty much a guarantee.

Journalist Questions

Question 1: Lando, a question for you. You said that any contract that allows you to extend in Formula 1 is a good thing. I know you've got another 2 years to run on your contract, but are you already talking to McLaren about plans beyond 2025? Because obviously there’s a lot of noise around your possible future and that you might be quite an important person in the driver market moving forward?

Yeah, there are always things every now and then. I would love to, I've always said I want to win with McLaren, and I think we're getting closer and closer to achieving that. And not just to win races, but win championships, both Driver and Constructor. I want to do it with McLaren, I'm very happy there. So if I was to spend 10 or 15 years there, I'm not going to ever say no, I think that's something I would look forward to.

But I’m very much just concentrated on this year, next year and '25. I think that’s two and a half years to try and progress and we'll see then. But things [come up] every now and then, but nothing more than that.

Question 2 (to any driver): Alex, picking up on your point about the immersion of speed around Suzuka, it's such an incredible circuit. When you look at the F1 calendar and tracks like this, how much do weekends and circuits here really remind you of why you became an F1 driver and the thrill and rush you enjoy while racing, as opposed to maybe more sanitized circuits?

Lando: I think quite a bit. Like Yuki mentioned and Alex, I think when you go to Singapore, it's still amazing to drive it in a Formula 1 car and probably still quicker than any other car you can go around Singapore in, but you don't feel the same speeds like you do here. You don't get that same feeling of what an F1 car is really capable of, because where it performs better than anything is high-speed corners. So yeah, I think a lot of it is about that.

Also, the room for error is pretty small; there's a lot of consequences as soon as you go off pretty much anywhere. I know some places have changed, and there's a lot more Tarmac run-off, like in the Spoon corner and things like that. Maybe Turn 1 as well, but it's not changed much over the years, which I think is one of the best things about it.

It's not just Tarmac everywhere, they’ve still got grass, you've got that bit of risk, that element of risk, which I think is always genuine, it always feels very natural and definitely adds to, say, a Qualifying lap, with how much risk you want to take. Especially through Turns 7 and 8, you're always a bit afraid of running too wide, things like that, because you know if you put a wheel half a metre too wide, it’s game over, so it's exciting.

It definitely brings a few more nerves while putting a lap together and driving. But, yeah, probably one of the ones I look forward to the most every season. I think a lot of drivers do, They said it was their favourite ones and probably up there with one of my favourites too. So yeah, you experienced what a Formula 1 Car is capable of, and just the whole experience of driving here is always a lot of fun.

Question 3 (for all drivers): Were you surprised that Max got away with reprimands for impeding last week instead of grid penalties? Do you have any concerns about consistency? Because Pierre got quite excited about it. He says he's going to bring it up with the FIA.

Lando: I don't want to say too much because I'll just create controversy. I think the blocking one on track was the one that should have been a penalty; he blocked someone, it’s not just down to the team. I know the team got the fine at the end of the day, but it should be down to the driver as well to look in his mirrors and see if someone else is behind. You’ve got nothing else to do the whole lap but look in your mirrors, and it seems like a lot of people struggle to do that.

But I think, yeah, it should just be harsher penalties for blocking people, because so many people do it, it ruins your lap, it ruins your Qualifying. It put Yuki out in Qualifying, and he was P1 in Q1, probably would have been P1 in Q3 if he went all the way, just no one seems to care enough.

It’s happened a lot this season, it's happened to me quite a few times, especially with certain teams. But it's also up to the driver to look in the mirror, like you've got nothing else to do but hit the recharge button and look in your mirror and people seem to struggle to be able to do that in Formula 1, it's just a surprise. But yeah, I'll probably block someone this weekend and make myself look stupid.

🧡 It's lovely to hear Lando's thoughts going into the Japanese GP, and that he feels he and Oscar are the strongest driver pairing on the grid 🥰

And I'm proud of him for calling out the FIA's leniency towards drivers who block others, it's so unfair that so many drivers are getting away with ruining other drivers' laps. I hope this won't be an issue for him in Suzuka, and that he has an amazing race weekend. Let's go, Lando 🔥

osu! diary, 3rd december 2022

so i've been grinding osu! quite a lot during the past week, when i definitely should have studied more, especially when mid-terms are coming up, in fact, i have one tomorrow morning, but i'm here writing this lol

also i titled this "diary", but this is probably a one-time thing, like yeah yeah, diary in vnese is nhật ký, and nhật (meaning "day") implies the daily aspect of it, but hey, i can't be bothered to write sth daily, not like i have enough ability or linguistic skills to write so much ._.

so yeah, like i've said before, i've been grinding a lot recently. specifically, this is the graph showing the number of plays in the past year

November: 175 plays

December: 59 plays (keep in mind we're only 3 days in)

so yep, the future's not looking so bright LOL

the main reason why im playing so much is because i've got a new laptop, so i'm kinda abusing the storage and specs upgrade from my last laptop

and... on the topic of storage, here we have the amount of storage i've spent for storing the beatmaps

i feel fortunate because i'm currently only into play osu!standard, and not other game modes as well, because god knows how much more storage it's gonna take up

but yeah the first few days when i first installed the game, i mass downloaded the beatmaps. i just looked up some popular artists and download all the beatmaps of the songs that i know. to the point that osu literally temporarily blocked me from downloading any more beatmaps 💀💀💀 they quite literally shouted at my face that i need to stop downloading maps and play more...

of course, after playing for a bit and waited until the next day, i could download more beatmaps again 😈 so as of now, we end up with

i have no idea if i'm gonna be able to play all of them. obviously there are also beatmaps from other game modes, and there are 6-star, 7-star beatmaps which i don't think i'm gonna ever have enough skills to play them. i might need to filter them out sometime, for now i can't be bothered to do that, especially when they don't take up that much space in my hard disk.

there's kinda one problem tho, it's when i try to press the Z and X keys on this laptop, but it's a membrane keyboard, and this laptop also happens to be really slim too, so pressing the keys down feels very shallow. i find it really annoying at first typing on this keyboard, still does now, but im more used to the feels. but yeah, it feels kinda weird having to spam these two buttons playing osu!, and since the laptop in general is so fragile, i always feel like i'm damaging the keys somehow. so i might get specialised keycaps just for this game idk (if i do, that would be extremely concerning actually)

and so the grinding starts, i played some maps that i used to love playing on my old laptop, also tried out some new maps, most of them are songs that i'm already familiar with, so i tend to not have a lot of problem with the rhythms

one of the really good songs that i've downloaded and have played recently is lily allen's fuck you. honestly, the song itself is amazing. the beatmap, well, it's a little bit slow, so i had to do put some mods in, specifically HR - hard rock, making the circles smaller and faster and DT - double time, increase the speed of the song and the beatmap by 1.5 times i think (yeah i know it says double but that's how the mod works ig)

honestly that was pretty challenging to me already, especially when the tempo of the song is 1.5 times faster. but it also pays off with a good amount of pp (let me stop you horny mfs right there, it's performance points) and rank, and ofc had quite a bit of fun playing it, and a bunch of adrenaline as well.

another beatmap is sesame street's cookie butter choco cookie, it's basically ppap, but for kids

the beatmap was just the first minute when elmo and cookie monster was singing. there are also quite a lot of difficulties to choose from, so i just played a lot of that song, not to mention because i'm also kinda grinding for stats, and i tried a difficulty that's a bit harder for me, so yeah just imagine having elmo and cookie monster "awh" harmoniously in your ear three times each time the song plays and have that repeat for about 15-20 minutes...

it kinda pays off tho, i got a 2nd highest on my PB leaderboard, and im now in the 600k (ofc, not a lot, but still sth)

i enjoyed it a lot, i've always loved rhythm games, and osu! is an awesome game, despite it's clearly contributing to my highly likely, upcoming dramatic academic downfall, but hey, circle clicking game is fun, you can't blame me alright?
