My random comic Recs #1

I've been reading more comics lately, so I wanted to share my love for them in the hopes that someone might give this medium a chance!

Note: I am not a fan of superhero comics, because I simply don't like that genre, so don't expect superheroes below. Gonna make these posts every now and then and they will always include 4 recs. 1.) The Many Deaths of Laila Starr

Death got demoted and sent to earth as a mortal! Some boy is going to figure out how to cheat death in the future, and our girl Death really doesn't appreciate that. The entire graphic novel is only 5 issues long, so it's VERY digestible and easy to get through.There is something so light and playful about the art style, and the vibrant colors really sell it.

For people that are completely new to comics as a medium, I imagine that this is actually an A+ book to start with for the reasons I just mentioned. The way paneling and the flow of time is done in here, is a great example as to why comics are so unique as a medium and why they should be looked at as its own art from, separate from movies or books.

2) Mécanique Céleste (Or "Mechanica Calaestium" in the German translation, or "Aster Of Pan" in the English translation)

An absolutely breathtaking French comic. Aster lives in Pan, a post-apocalyptic France where she scavenges for wreckage with her friend Wallis. After their people come under a threat by the Federation of Fortuna, they are given a choice —submit to Fortuna’s rule or beat them in a weird Hunger Games-esque version of Dodge, called “Celestial Mechanics”.

The detailed art pieces in each panel, the careful line work, the lively way the characters move and the stunning watercolors captivated me from the first page. This graphic novel (now 2 volumes) is one of a kind and truly unique!

3) Something Is Killing the Children

Note: Comic contains a lot of gore and violence!

Children are starting to disappear in Archer's Peak. The ones that come back tell impossible stories that no one seems to believe. Only one stranger trusts these tales - a mysterious girl named Erica Slaughter who seems to be able to see these creatures too. And she's here for business.

I loooove Something is Killing the Children. I haven't finished reading the ongoing volumes yet, but I am super fascinated at how well the pacing goes in this story. The rough art style with Erica's freaky large eyes is SO fun, and you start appreciating it even more the longer you read.

4) Mon Ami Pierrot ("Mein Freund Pierrot" in German, "My friend Pierrot" in English)

Another fabulous French comic! Cléa is to marry soon - a young man name of Berthier. Right before the wedding she meets the fascinating magician Pierrot though, who completely changes the course of her life. Entranced by his whimsical nature that makes her feel "free" for the first time in her life, she follows him and leaves her previous life behind. During her stay with Pierrot, questions arise, though. Who is he really? All the while her betrothed sets out to find her again.

The Ghibli influence both art- and storywise is easy to make out, and I personally really enjoyed that. I particularly love the colors and the facial expressions the characters are drawn with. Everything feels very whimsical and playful and I had a good time going through this chonker of a graphic novel!

No spoilers, but I expected toothrottingly-sweet wholesome stuff, and ended up surprised on several occasions. I think the colours and art style really help give those moments wham, because you don't expect it.

The sun slowly rose over earth 42, a planet teeming with diverse life and vibrant civilizations. Among its inhabitants was Miles, a young man known as the Prowler for his swift and agile movements. While his role as a guardian of justice often demanded focus and strength, Miles had a soft spot for someone who added a touch of whimsy to his life. Her name was (Y/N).

(Y/N) was a petite and lively girl who brought joy to those around her with her infectious laughter and childlike wonder. Her vibrant, rainbow-colored backpack matched her vibrant personality. She had a passion for all things cute and fantastical, including animes, cartoons, and cosplaying. Her room was adorned with posters of her favorite characters, and she had an extensive collection of plush toys that filled every available corner.

In the bustling halls of their high school, Miles observed (Y/N) skipping through the crowds, her backpack adorned with pins and keychains featuring characters from her favorite animes. She had a skip in her step and a sparkle in her eyes as she excitedly chatted with friends about the latest episodes and upcoming cosplay events. Miles couldn't help but smile at her infectious enthusiasm.

One sunny afternoon, during a break between classes, Miles decided to surprise (Y/N) with a special gift. He had noticed her admiring a Hello Kitty stuffed toy during a recent visit to a local mall. Knowing her love for all things cute and cuddly, he had carefully purchased the toy, intending to present it to her at the perfect moment.

As the school bell rang, signaling the end of another long day of learning, Miles discreetly slipped the stuffed Hello Kitty toy into his backpack. He made his way through the bustling hallways, searching for (Y/N) amongst the sea of students. Finally, he spotted her near her locker, engrossed in conversation with her friends.

Taking a deep breath, Miles approached (Y/N) with a mischievous grin on his face. "Hey, cariña," he called out, his voice filled with playful anticipation. As she turned to face him, he revealed the stuffed toy, holding it out for her to see. "I saw this and thought of you. It reminded me of your love for all things cute. Happy early birthday!"

(Y/N)'s eyes widened with surprise, and a radiant smile spread across her face. She reached out eagerly, accepting the stuffed Hello Kitty toy with gratitude and awe. "Mi amor, you're amazing! Thank you so much!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with genuine appreciation.

Miles couldn't help but feel a warm glow inside as he witnessed her sheer joy. It was moments like these that made their connection so special. He loved how (Y/N) embraced her passions unapologetically, and how her innocent spirit reminded him to find joy in the simple things.

As (Y/N) clutched her new Hello Kitty plushie with excitement, a mocking voice pierced the air, cutting through their joyful moment. "Ew! What are you, 5? What high schooler needs a toy?" The words were accompanied by cruel laughter from a group of students loitering nearby.

Miles felt a surge of protective anger wash over him, his eyes narrowing as he glared at the source of the derogatory comment. His heart raced, fueling a determination to stand up for (Y/N) and defend her against any negativity. With unwavering resolve, he took a step forward.

In a firm yet composed voice, Miles confronted the mocker, refusing to let their hurtful words go unanswered. "Hey asshat! It’s not about age or what someone 'needs.' It's about embracing what brings joy and happiness. (Y/N) has every right to enjoy things that make her smile, just like everyone else. So, if you have nothing kind to say, shut the fuck up before I come over there and make you keep your negativity to yourself by shoving it so far up your ass you’ll be breathing out every negative thought you have!”

A brief silence filled the hallway, as both friends and onlookers turned their attention to the confrontation unfolding before them. (Y/N) looked at Miles, her eyes shimmering with a mix of surprise and gratitude. She had always admired his strength and courage, but seeing him stand up for her in this way filled her heart with even more affection.

The mocker's face flushed with embarrassment, perhaps realizing the weight of their thoughtless comment. Their smirk faded as they muttered an insincere apology, mumbling something about not meaning any harm. The group of students dispersed, leaving Miles and (Y/N) standing there, the tension slowly dissipating.

Miles turned back to (Y/N), a reassuring smile gracing his lips. He reached out to gently squeeze her hand, silently conveying his support and unwavering commitment. (Y/N)'s eyes shimmered with a mixture of admiration and affection for the person who had defended her honor.

"Thank you, Miles," she whispered softly, her voice filled with gratitude. "It means a lot to me that you stood up for me. It shows how much you care."

Miles leaned closer, their foreheads lightly touching as he whispered, "Always, cariño. You bring so much joy and happiness to my life. No one should ever make you feel ashamed of that."

In that moment, amidst the bustling school hallway, the two of them found solace and strength in each other's presence. The incident had only deepened their bond, reminding them of the importance of standing up for what they believed in and supporting one another unconditionally.

As they continued on their path, hand in hand, Miles and (Y/N) knew that they would face challenges and encounters with negativity along the way. Favourite color: this might be a weird answer considering i'm red-green colorblind and i can barely see it half the time but i love red! especially bright neon red is just oughhh 😩 i also loooove all neon and pastel colors (but fuck pink, it always just looks gray to me unless it's a reeeally vibrant pink)

Hi! No worries I haven't and I'd love to talk about watercolor :) I use several, in transparent > opaque order:

Schmincke > Holbein cake colors > Nicker poster colors

Some notes:

Schmincke: Expensive but really good, vibrant, if on a budget maybe you can get a couple blocks of colors you really like. If you're committed to watercolor I definitely recommend getting a palette. I made my own custom set. Loooove the blues.

Holbein: this is a Japanese brand, so it was actually easier to get in China than the US, I got on Ali Express. It's slightly more opaque but not exactly gouache. It looks like the really cheap kind of cake watercolor palette but a lot more vibrant. It sets on paper with a kinda of sandy texture and I really love it. It's also a bit more dense than traditional transparent watercolor, so you can also layer with it easily.

I think the 24 color set is a lot more worth it than the 12 color set. Problem is I don't think they sell blocks individually, or at least hard to find.

These recent ones I posted are the combination of these two paints above.

Nicker: Again Japanese brand. I heard this is what Ghibli studio use? But it's affordable. I could get individual jars (jars are much better value than the tubes) in China, but in the US I've only found sets on Amazon so far.

It's smooth, and still remains a good saturation when diluted compared to other gouache/poster colors I've used. I don't use this alone as much now, but this is something solely done with Nicker I made a couple years ago 👇 as you can see it has good coverage. So when I did this I didn't layer up I just painted inch by inch.

But I have to say, how a watercolor painting turns out is really up to the paper! In my opinion paper is even more important than the paint, it influences vibrancy and textures more than you would think. So I always encourage my friends to get good paper rather than expensive paint. I use Arches hot press for formal works most often, but for a cheaper option I also love Fabriano (the two lil ones above are on their postcard papers, really good enough). Both are great for layering up.

And last, you can Photoshop them :D

These stuff sure cost a lot in total, but it took me a long time to figure out and collect all these, they don't really run out that fast if you don't do very large paintings. You can definitely try it out bit by bit, and enjoy the excitement of using a new paint on the way!

please could you do a tutorial on how you enhance the colouring of a gif to be really vibrant in one colour without it changing the coloring of the rest of the gif? you do it really well and it looks great!!

hii, thank you anon!! and yes, i will grab different psds i have around my laptop and explain how i achieved that coloring. very long tutorial under the cut!

it's a bit hard for me to explain how my brain works when it comes to selecting the type of coloring/scenes i want to gif so please bear with me lmao. okay so first things first, i always try to choose scenes that are in the same section of the color wheel, this makes things easier in photoshop.

i will use this gif as an example

i chose this particular scene to turn it green because blues and cyans are close to the green tones in the color wheel, so that's gonna make things WAY easier in photoshop, especially if the subject is moving. another tip is to find scenes where there's a color that's really separated or isolated from the rest, that helps me so much in ps because then i can basically change its color without worrying about turning her legs the color i chose.

i don't apply all these tips at the same time because it truly depends on the case but i tried changing the color of the same gif to red with hue/saturation and it looks quite good as well since the blue is really separated from the rest:

now things get a bit more complicated, because now that taylor's bodysuit has the same tones as her skin tone editing everything gets a bit harder, bc let's say i want her legs to look a bit more purple-ish since they're a bit yellow and i want to tone that down (another tip: look at the color wheel to figure out which opposite color you need to cancel out a particular one you want to get rid of) i usually go liiiittle by little with selective color and i only work in the yellows and reds (sometimes magentas), this is trial and error, drag the tiny arrows in each color to see what looks best or what looks somewhat decent lol. this is how the finished psd would look like, i only had to tweak the yellow section in selective color, and that worked out well!

that's usually what i do 90% of the time. other times i try to edit the color just a bit, so i can further separate it more in case it still picks up similar tones that are around it.

other tip i have is that most of the times i choose scenes where the subject doesn't move that much, especially if i'm changing the color of something in particular.

like this lwymmd gif, it's a very radical change in color so i had to use a brush and stuff to make the red turn white, but see how there's barely any movement? that's the type of scenes you want to use when you want to change its color (especially if it's something as contrasting and different as white) this one had a combination of hue/saturation and using a brush with a green color for the most part and selective color to finish tweaking her skin tone.

for example since the red was super isolated i didn't have to tweak much, but for example when you want to include a bunch of colors you can play with the slides that are circled in teal to tell photoshop "i want you to include this specific tone in your color selection" so then you can desaturate it and increase the lightness (that's how you turn anything to white) or change it to another color, whatever you choose. that's what i did for the midnights bodysuit:

i dragged the shit out of those sliders lmfao, but it's how i got to change the color in a uniform and faster way.

hue/saturation is my favorite adjustment because i loooove turning things white/black bc of two reasons: makes the scene so unique, bc no one has seen the red dress from lwymmd white, so it automatically stands out AND if for example you're making an orange set and you have a random color that you don't need (like blue, or green, etc,. again, make sure they're a bit isolated at least and that they are not close in the color wheel) you can always turn them white or black to enhance even more the orange! it's what i did with this gif. my focus were pinks, yellows and oranges, so i got rid of the blues/purples/cyans by desaturating them and add lightness to them (like i did with the rep gif)

when it comes to enhancing a color that already exists in the scene i take some liberties, but it might not apply to every single scene. sometimes i do discard gifs bc it's not working how i want to. i just use selective color to adjust anything and again i go little by little.

another example of me changing the color and using a different technique: halsey isn't moving at all so that gives me the chance to change the background to anything i want, in this case i used hue/saturation but in a different way, i selected colorize and increased the saturation. that way you're turning your gif whatever color you choose. with a layer mask i then got rid of the parts i didn't want to be affected by this change.

and same with this one, got rid of the green because it's a very isolated color so that makes things easier when it comes to change its color or get rid of it. and for this set i went for an all pink color palette so see how me desaturating it and turn it into white makes the pink pop even more? it always depends on what your set is going to look like, i could've changed it to blue or purple depending on the color combo.

i think this is everything i can think of, since i color every gif from scratch one case might not apply to another one, so pls if you have any doubts about a particular gif i colored don't hesitate and ask! i'd be happy to help and explain!

most popular: jeonghan "what would you do if i became a cockroach?" (1.2k notes) - classic jeonghan behavior necessitating a set... favorite: an ode album covers - my first foray into anything graphics-adjacent! it came out exactly how i planned, and it's my favorite thing i've created thus far

JULY

most popular: snoozi (5.2k notes) - my most popular set of the year! i love how many people enjoyed the pun, and i looooved compiling all the sleepy woozis favorite: it's definitely snoozi, but honorable mentions include strawboory & svt + tv tropes - strawberry boo was already too cute not to gif, and as soon as i had the pun in mind, nothing could've stopped me from using it - svt + tv tropes was so fun! i actually have a few ideas for a part 2, but not enough for a whole set yet.

AUGUST

most popular: "in the market" song (700 notes) - i was flabbergasted by this, woozi's memory terrifies me. instant gifset. favorite: a rainbow of wz hair colors - i loved coloring this set, for obvious reasons. vibrant gifs my beloved.

SEPTEMBER

most popular: follow tour vcr (500 notes) - the moment i saw this, i loved it. i'm not exactly sure what the plot was, so i had my own interpretation ofc. favorite: svt mvs + pink & blue - i was on a mission for rq&s, but i ended up going a little broader instead. i had fun making the templates!

most popular: pd woo (700 notes) - it's just a single large gif, but man is it a cute face. the 700 notes are me reblogging it 700 times in another life. favorite: first love & letter album covers - wahhh these were so fun to make! the "love" one is my favorite, they're such good boys honestly.

NOVEMBER

most popular: woozi's birthday (400 notes) - i really enjoyed creating the layout for this and adding all the cute bits and pieces. it's one of my favorites from this year :) favorite: it's definitely the birthday set, but honorable mention for the birthday box photoshoot - pink sweater...

Something that i gotta mention about Wano is that everything is so pretty !?!? There's is this style change that makes it so different from all the other One Piece arcs that I love, like the backgrounds are so beautiful, the color palettes are so vibrant and there's certain glow to them ! And THE LINEART !! I ABSOLUTELY LOOOOVE THE LINEART !

Seeing the original Advanced Suit really drives home how much more vibrant the colors are in Spider-Man 2 than in the original, that shit looks stanky. I literally never wore the Advanced Suit in the original game whereas i LOOOOVE the Advanced Suit 2.0, especially in its second style. It's my go-to for serious moments and stuff.

Hey im sorry if this has been asked before (i guess it most certainly has been) but how do you get toir desogns onto the fabric? Do you painstakingly paint it by hand??? I loooove tour Locked Tomb jacket design sooo much!

Omg no worries at all! It actually hasn’t been asked of me directly, so you’re the first :)

My process for transferring designs:

Measure and scale the design in photoshop (or any other suitable image editing software)

Print out image; ensure it fits the space you want it to go

For actually transferring the design, I use a white carbon transfer paper that I tape the printed image to (wax side down)

I use those little round tipped embossing tools (that come with the paper I ordered - Amazon) to trace the design, which leaves a faint outline

I fill in missing gaps by referencing the image and using a white chalk pencil (like the kind you use for sewing)

I use white acrylic paint pen to finalize the outline, which is the most nervewracking part (I use black paint pen to correct any paint bleeds or mistakes and smudge it out so it blends with the fabric better)

Once the first pass of paint dries, depending on how vibrant I want the color to be, I’ll give it anywhere from 3-5 extra passes (so the skulls on the sleeves were 2 passes of white paint pen; the spine was I think, 5? And I used a thinner liquid airbrush paint as it was easier than a thin point pen

I’ve been wanting to invest in a small projector so I can just project the image and trace it directly but idk there’s something I like about the extra few manual steps in getting the design on the fabric.

1. what are your top 3 favorite sets you’ve made?

ooo, this is a toughie. it changes, but as of now in no particular order:

the VegasPete tarot set: this is the LAST tarot set I will ever make, so HELP ME (no one let me do that again- friends talk friends off bad-choice cliffs; got it?)

two VegasPete sets that are sort of meant to be a pair: one from Pete's perspective (that inspired a soon-to-be fic; AHHHH! so honored) & one from Vegas's. the second one isn’t a fav really, but again- they go together.

the Fire on Fire redux set: it's nothing spectacular editing-wise, but remaking my first set & comparing my progress over a year was really encouraging (plus it’s ITSAY, so hello sentimental).

30. how frequently do you like to post?

whenever the gay spirit moves me 😂 I don't GIF anything I'm not really into & I mainly GIF currently-airing shows, so it depends on how many have me in a chokehold at the time.

48. how would you describe your giffing style?

if wanting to make GIFs so sharp they look like they could cut you with vibrant AF coloring & great contrast is a style, that’s mine.

I hate the soft visual haze that seems to hang over Thai BLs in particular, but I loooove getting rid of it. I changed my sharpening drastically in February & it's made all the difference.

I haven’t been quietly redoing my old sets because they look blurry & sad by comparison or anything...
