Aspec men deserve much more respect and recognition in the aspec community than they receive. They often face a different form of aphobia specific to them ("men are naturally sexual they can't be ace" "all men are unromantic that's not unique") this rhetoric is spouted by many, even members of our own community and I hope for a day where that is no longer the case. As an ace and demiro woman (demigirl but that's beside the point) I want to encourage folks to take the time to give the aspec men in their lives support and to the aspec men reading, you are who you say you are no matter what people say and you deserve the world. I'm sorry for the ways in which toxic masculinity has harmed you. You are a valued member of the aspec community and the queer community as a whole. No ace or aro person is broken and neither are you. I'm sorry if anyone has ever told you otherwise.

FC Cincinnati Construction Recalls Cincinnati’s Long-Vanished Jewish Ghetto
Among the victims of FC Cincinnati construction in the West End is a distinctive yet decrepit theater most recently occupied as a worship center by Lighthouse Ministries. Known for decades as the State Theater, this old auditorium is among the few reminders of the West End’s long history as the heart of Cincinnati’s Jewish community.
Under the name State Theater, the structure at Fifteenth Street and Central Avenue is legendary as a venue for jazz and vaudeville in addition to decades of films. It is little remembered that this theater was originally constructed as a cultural center for Cincinnati’s Jewish residents. FC Cincinnati’s new complex will occupy a substantial footprint in what was known 100 years ago as Cincinnati’s Jewish ghetto.
The northern West End wasn’t even the Queen City’s first Jewish ghetto. The Cincinnati Post [23 June 1911] described how a census by the Jewish Settlement tracked a northward migration around the beginning of the Twentieth Century:
“The census, the result of which is announced in the annual report of the Settlement, shows that the ghetto has moved from the West End to upper Central-av. The boundaries of the old district were West Fifth-av., West Court-st., Central-av. and Linn-st. The new district is bounded by Liberty-st., West Court-st., Central-av. and Linn-st.”
In other words, the original Jewish enclave in Cincinnati was located south of Court Street in the West End, while the post-1900 ghetto occupied the West End north of Court Street up to Liberty. Most inhabitants of this “new” ghetto had roots in Poland and Russia. The mostly German inhabitants of the “old” ghetto had moved to hilltop neighborhoods by the end of the 1800s.
According to Zane Miller’s definitive “Boss Cox’s Cincinnati,” the hilltop German Jews looked with disdain on the newly arrived immigrants in the upper West End:
“The coming of the Russian immigrants forced German Jews to look down from the Hilltops and introduced them to the seamy side of life in the Basin. The spectacle aroused their disgust, sympathy, and horror.”
Cincinnati rabbis had to chastise their German congregations who employed offensive epithets such as “kike” to describe the new Russian-Polish residents of the West End.
Despite the Hilltop opprobrium, Cincinnati’s ghetto was a thriving community. The Jewish Settlement, which served as the headquarters for the “new” ghetto, was located on Clinton Street – a now-obliterated avenue on which Stargel Stadium (itself slated for demolition) was built. According to the Jewish Settlement, nearly 1,400 of Cincinnati’s 2,000 Jewish households were located west of Central Avenue between Court and Liberty, served by six synagogues and a variety of literary, social and political clubs. The Hebrew Union College was located in the West End from 1880 to 1910 at 724 West Sixth Street.
Tumblr media
To serve this West End population, plans for a new theater were announced in 1913. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer [28 September 1913]:
“The theater, to cost about $60,000, exclusive of the land, will be of the motion-picture type, but will serve a new purpose in that field, since its owners intend bringing to Cincinnati Jewish plays. The site for the improvement is in the heart of Cincinnati’s Ghetto, and it is planned to make the theater a sort of Jewish social center, working in conjunction with the Jewish Settlement, located in the same neighborhood.”
Architect for the theater was John Zettel, who also designed the Hyde Park Square fountain. Coordinating the project’s finances and overseeing construction was Harry Linch, a prominent Jewish attorney in Cincinnati.
The land on which the theater was built was owned by a syndicate headed by Nicholas Longworth, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and scion of the family who gave us the Taft Museum. Longworth also owned some lots around the corner on Providence Street and donated them to the Jewish Settlement for construction of some tennis courts. Boris D. Bogen, Settlement superintendent, was delighted, according to the Cincinnati Post [29 April 1912]:
“Our Ghetto families have enough of books and education. In the aggregate, they probably excel in intellectual culture the residents of any other section of the city, even the section in which the very rich live. But they have so little physical exercise.”
To encourage exercise, the Settlement installed a roof-top garden where young people could play in fresh air and got a swimming pool constructed in the area. But the Settlement also promoted classes in English and civics to support “benevolent assimilation,” according to Superintendent Bogen, who made no secret that his ultimate goal was to dissolve the ghetto. To a large extent, he was successful.
Within a few years of opening night, the changing audience of the Metropolitan Theater demonstrated the evolution of the West End neighborhood. Among the first films screened at the Metropolitan was “The Melting Pot,” a cinematic adaptation of Israel Zangwill’s 1908 play about Russian pogroms and Jewish assimilation in the United States. Through classified ads, the theater reached out to amateur performers in the neighborhood. Vaudeville acts included Irving White, billed as “That Jewish Boy.”
While catering to a Jewish audience, the theater worked closely with the Settlement to promote patriotism and assimilation. A Liberty Loan Parade to support the American effort in World War I marched from the Settlement to the Metropolitan Theater. The theater held contests for children singing patriotic songs.
But it was clear that assimilation was draining the Yiddish-speaking population out of the West End. The Metropolitan needed to attract non-Jewish audiences almost from the time it opened its doors. It showed risqué fare like the 1914 Italian silent “Salambo” and controversial “issue” movies like the birth-control-themed “Unborn.” By the mid-1920s, the Linch family was no longer managing the theater. References to Cincinnati’s Jewish ghetto became rarer and rarer in the newspapers.
Another page in the history of the West End had turned.

The Alton Towers Story - The Power of the Towers
Miles away from the coast, but sure to satiate your roller-coaster desires – it’s time to find out ‘the power of the towers’…
Alton Towers – the place where dreams are made of (well, a place where fun times are had, anyway) and, being located in the middle of nowhere, this really is the go-to destination for anybody travelling through Staffordshire. Check out these hacks of what to do and what not to do to make the most of your visit, whenever you may go.
From Flowers to Towers
If you don’t know anything about the history of one of the most famous theme parks in the world, here’s definitely a good place to start.
A fort / castle establishment has been at the heart of the Alton Estate for hundreds of years. In fact, an iron age fort was built there and in 700AD, a fortress replaced this by a Saxon king. In the twelfth century, the large manorial estate (in which Alton Towers is located) was given to a knight – Bertram II de Verdun – for his work in the Crusades. However, the current estate as it is known today was created in the first decade of the nineteenth century by the fifteenth Earl of Shrewsbury, where the buildings and the farmland around the stately home were turned into one of the largest formal gardens in Britain. After many more years of different people inheriting the land, the eighteenth Earl of Shrewsbury acquired the Alton Towers estate in 1859 – and this is the point in time which became the major turning point for the future of this Staffordshire landmark.
Believe it or not, but Alton Towers opened as a country estate nearly 180 years ago, in April 1860. The Earl celebrated his acquisition of the Alton Towers estate by holding a procession through Staffordshire, attracting some 40,000 people to the grounds.
Following the success of the eighteenth Earl, the successive earls consequently monetised how popular and how much of an attraction this place actually was. Opened for raising money to refurbish the house in the first instance, a tradition arose and it became obvious that the public were just as enthusiastic to take a visit to the estate as the first instance. In fact, the twentieth Earl instigated the tradition of bringing summer fetes to the Staffordshire Moorlands. Not just with the attraction of the gardens being open to take in, but fireworks, balloons and several exhibitions ensured that the future of the estate was secured for many years to come.
However, in the closing years of the nineteenth century, the separation of the Earl and the Countess slowly but surely put the future of the whole estate in danger until 1924, when it was brought into public ownership. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Alton Towers showed even a tiny glimpse of what it is today, with the inclusion of a few little attractions, such as a boating lake, a chairlift and a small fair. However, when the Tussauds Group purchased the site in 1980, this foreshadowed the many decades of development and the scope for what was to come to ensure the continuity of this site through the major development of roller-coaster rides; notably installing the famous Corkscrew that year.
Alton Towers was requisitioned as an officer cadet training camp. The house and grounds remained under the control of the war office until 1951.
Don’t Halt in Alton!
If you’re one of the millions (yes, really) of people who have visited Alton Towers over the years, you’ll have probably experienced the feeling of nervousness and excitement as you drive through the little, hard-to-navigate streets of the namesake’s chocolate-box village. The only thing I would advise you to do is to keep on driving. You see the name, ‘Alton Towers’ is actually quite misleading, as the actual grounds are located in an even smaller place called Farley. It’s like the Glastonbury of theme parks!
But once you do arrive into the grounds, that is just the start of your experience. Whether you park as close as humanly possible to the main entrance, or you drive just a little further afield and catch the monorail, the scenery and the staff all make your time at Alton Towers that much more magical – it’s like you’ve been transported into a completely different world.
Alton Towers is Europe’s joint-12th most visited theme park in Europe, with attendance breaking the 2,000,000 annual visitor mark in 2017
Make the Most of Your Stay!
Ensuring that you have the best time, the Alton Towers Resort is fantastic at providing things for everybody to do. So much so that this overview of the theme park does very little justice to what you can actually get out of being there – so my first tip is that you really don’t know the magic of Alton Towers until you visit Alton Towers. Along with their world-famous roller-coasters (which people literally travel across the world to visit), visitors are encouraged to have a leisurely stroll through the centuries-old Gardens,
along with taking the Skyride to really get a different perspective on what stood (and still stands) in this now-changed country estate. Not only this, but Merlin also provides a plethora of arcade games dotted around each attraction to keep literally everybody occupied for the day (or even longer…) Saying this, I really would recommend that, if you were staying for more than one day, you purchase the Alton Towers season pass – for a little more extra than the price of an ordinary ticket, it pays itself off in only a couple of visits; so definitely do your research and do your planning before paying.
Make sure to visit https://www.altontowers.com/tickets/ and also make sure to visit the well-known voucher code websites to really get the best deal
As with a lot of the major attractions which Merlin has, the amount of roller-coasters and things to do is physically staggering. So much so, that a lot of the coasters are split into different ‘sectors’ – including CBeebies Land (for smaller children), Mutiny Bay (for great family fun), the Dark Forest (for everybody wanting to take a delve into the unknown of roller-coaster rides) and the X Sector (for the true thrill seekers). This can mean that different areas of the park are busier at different times, and this can be super annoying for people waiting in the queue, because it can mean that you are spending much more time queuing rather than getting to the next ride to quench your thrill-seeking thirst. So, firstly, I would always pick a day during the week to visit the park where possible. As a general rule, the areas furthest away from the entrance are the best places to visit first. Not only would this get some of the Big 6 coasters ticked off the list first, but, it would also mean that the queue times are shorter, because not many people really feel like walking their legs off at the beginning of the day to get to the far corners of the park. Aside from this, it must be said that lunchtime is always a good time to go on any of the big rollercoasters – because not many people really have the desire to jump on the front of The Smiler just after wolfing down a hugely tasty (but a little pricey) spicy chicken burger and chips! And remember – always check to see when the ride close time is; this is the time when the entrances to each of the roller-coaster rides shut, so make sure to jump in the queue before then.
If you are peckish, there are so many great places to eat in and around the park, but it can be equally nice to take your own food, giving you the freedom to eat it wherever your heart desires. This might be a good idea too, because it means then you can really treat yourself during the day to a pack of moreish doughnuts from Mutiny Bay instead of splashing all your cash on the savoury stuff at midday. Nitrogenie, located outside Duel, is a particular favourite too for snacks on a hot summer’s day, with ice cream made directly in front of you. Made with a splash of magic (also known as liquid nitrogen), the whole experience of watching your food being made is hugely satisfying – and this is certainly no exaggeration.  However, if you don’t take your own food, Pizza and Pasta restaurant is the destination to go to – with an all-you-can-eat buffet selection. The downside to this is, you could literally spend all of your time at Alton Towers solely eating – so definitely approach with caution on that one! Feeling a little more flush or going for a special event? The Roller-coaster Restaurant is amazing; it is fantastic for families too, but err on the ride of caution with this one – there is no movement or indeed human interaction involved as you order all of your food with a tablet at your table and you pay for it all at the very end. Terrifically typical of Alton Towers, the magic of the park even flows into the theming of the food – which is really tasty, by the way.
Apart from the main attractions, there are other things you can do there, but this is all at a cost. For example, you can while away the hours at the Spa,or you can even visit the on-site waterpark, Splash Landings, but both can get hugely busy during the peak periods, so you really do need to make a day of going to those places too. Splash Landings is the place for everybody, and, when it’s not full, you really can let your hair down (or not) and just let go of the flow of life for a few hours! When it is busy, though, it sometimes doesn’t feel like you really get the full value of your time there, so it is probably best to plan ahead before you go, just like with the theme park, if you can.
Queue Times: The Inside Track
When I say ‘a completely different world’, I really do mean it – once you make it into the theme park itself, it really does place you in a very strange place, where the reality of the outside world might as well not just exist. One of the reasons behind this is the fact that physical time within Alton Towers times is completely different to how you’d experience time during (to quote one of the most famous rides at the theme park, ‘The Smiler’) your ordinary, mundane lives. So, because of this, be sure to always make a plan of action before you step foot into the park – this will ensure you get the best out of these few precious hours where fun is the one and only thing on the agenda!
Visit http://ridetimes.co.uk/ to get the queue times.
Depending on the time of year you visit, what you can physically do within the confines of a single day can vary hugely.
Thinking of going at the start of the season (March/April)? Yes, the queue times might be quiet, but the likelihood is that you’ll be quite chilly when walking between the rides and between finding things to do. I’d recommend to go during this time if you’re a true adrenaline junkie, but beware of horrible weather and this might cause some rides to close in adverse conditions.
Thinking of going before the summer holidays (April-June)? In my humble opinion, this is the best time to go. Okay, the weather might not be as good as during the peak summer season, but, the likelihood is that you’ll be met with sun and not showers. Apart from the seemingly endless bank holidays, these months create the fine balance between having a good time and being able to really quench your thirst for adrenaline.
Thinking of going during the summer period (July-September)? The holiday season only means one thing; FUN! The height of the British summertime brings along with it something not seen at any other time of the year for all of the fun and thrill seekers among us – it brings the chance to stay outside for longer and, for the kids, to stay up for longer! This is definitely the time to go if you are up for even more time to thrill seek on your day out. Usually, the ride close times are much later than at any other point in the season, but the flip-side to this is the hideously long queue times. Of course, it all depends on the day – you can never be too sure.
Thinking of going during the festive period (October-November)? A little like the summertime, this brings a whole different kettle of fish to the forefront – the Scarefest spook-tacular, during which The Laurels is dressed up and Fireworks extravaganza. Especially during Scarefest, the ride times are even later, with rides closing at 9pm (yes, really) but again, this means that the crowds can be heaving during the busier periods– so be prepared to walk (or stand) your legs off if you take the plunge and decide to visit during the period that Alton Towers is most famous for.
Let’s Just Go!
If you are a thrill-seeker, a fun fanatic, or just fancy going somewhere for a day out in the middle of the Staffordshire countryside (and who wouldn’t want that?!), you need to put Alton Towers on your list of places to visit. If you’re from the UK, or even further afield, you have probably heard of Alton Towers – especially as Merlin seem to have taken over the world with its theme parks, located at various locations in the UK, Europe, North America and Asia.
Yes, a trip to the Towers can be an expensive way to while away a few hours of the day, but there are so many different things you can do to make the most of your time there. You don’t have to be a Merlin employee to really make the money stretch further when you get there. One of the main ways which people save money is (I’m going all Martin Lewis here) by using popular online voucher code websites, where Alton Towers regularly offer huge discounts. Additionally, stay at The Laurels B&B is a fraction of the price of what Alton Towers charge per night – so if you don’t mind a little bit of travelling if you are staying in the area for more than an afternoon, it really does pay to do your research. The same goes with food; with so much to choose from in and around Alton itself, if you don’t mind what to eat, your taste buds might thank you – yes, the food at Alton Towers is nice, but healthy? Let’s just say, there is only so much fried food you can take as well as having the stomach to be able to not turn green on the most exhilarating roller-coasters!
So, if you plan your day right, if you know the best days to visit and if you come to the park with a good pair of walking shoes (trust me – you will need them) you’ll have a whale of a time. You’ll leave this incredible attraction smiling with your wallet not being drained into oblivion and your head not spinball whizzing with confusion!

I’m in her fan group ❤️
https://time.com/collection/coronavirus-heroes/5816890/amy-acton-ohio-coronavirus/
APRIL 9, 2020 7:23 AM EDT
The Director of Ohio’s Department of Health, Dr. Amy Acton, is no stranger to adversity. She was once abused by one of her mother’s partners, she bounced around to about 18 different living arrangements in her youth and she even spent one winter living in a tent. But she says her familiarity with disarray positioned her to be ready for a different catastrophe: the gravest pandemic the United States has seen in over 100 years.
“I think because of the childhood I had,” she tells TIME via video chat from the Ohio Statehouse, “that I’m at my best during a crisis.”
Her collective calm amid calamity has played out in front of the Buckeye State and the nation. Before the CDC began issuing nationwide and universal social distancing guidelines, the state health official was working with her Columbus city counterparts to limit the potential for the spread of disease at an annual fitness festival that was expected to draw a couple hundred thousand visitors and at least 22,000 athletes from 80 different countries. With Republican Gov. Mike DeWine and Acton at the helm, Ohio became the first state to shut down all public schools for an extended period of time on March 12. And just five days later, Acton issued a decree cancelling “non-essential or elective surgeries and procedures” that require personal protective equipment—even before New York, America’s epicenter of the virus, announced it was pausing elective procedures.
While President Donald Trump claimed the virus “is going away” on April 3 and tweeted that we were approaching a “LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!” (emphasis his) on April 6, Acton has been using her daily press briefing to treat the rising COVID-19 death tolls and lack of testing resources like the virulent crisis that it is. “Today is the day we have to batten down those hatches,” she somberly urged at her March 22 press conference. “There is no time left. Listen to what Italy is telling us.” On April 7, she doubled down: “You’re winning the war to protect our scarce resources and keeping our hospitals being able to deal with this. The second we let our foot off the gas, the second we are no longer that category 3 hurricane, it can pick up wind again and we can be a category 5.
Though the warning bells have gotten louder over time, Acton says they first entered her radar in early January. She was on a frightening phone call with the Centers for Disease and Control where a global epidemiologist was talking about an erratic illness that was spreading across China’s Wuhan region. “Something about her voice and what she was saying made me think this is zoonotic,” which means transmitted from animals.
“She sounded a little more alarmed,” Acton says of the global epidemiologist’s message.
Acton, who holds both a medical degree and master’s in public health, leapt into action. “I went straight to my state epidemiologist, and I was like, ‘Let’s talk about this coronavirus.’ And that began the adventure. Honestly, it has been seven days a week since then.”
Her prescient unease has likely saved lives in Ohio. The state’s coronavirus figures are lagging behind that of its peers. For example, Georgia—which recently reopened its beaches to the public—has a smaller population size than Ohio, but almost double both the number of confirmed cases and deaths. While Ohio is the seventh most populous state in the nation, it ranks seventeenth in confirmed cases and fifteenth in confirmed coronavirus-related deaths.
Robyn Petras, a 53-year-old Lancaster, Ohio, resident credits Acton for keeping the tallies so low, even though Petras personally tested positive for the virus on March 24.
Petras has Cystic Fibrosis, a lung disease that causes thick mucus to build up in her lungs, which can affect respiratory function. After watching the state health official speak about the common COVID-19 symptoms on television, Petras wondered whether the virus might be causing her low-grade fever, dry cough and fatigue. The realization led her to connect with her Cystic Fibrosis team that recommended she adjust her treatment protocol in order to fend off more severe coronavirus systems, in anticipation of a positive diagnosis. “Her sincere and calming presence, mixed with her compassion and medical knowledge gave me comfort and courage to take the virus head on,” Petras says of Acton. “I absolutely credit them for their quick and proactive action for not only saving my life, but the lives of my family and friends,” she adds of Acton and DeWine.
And Petras is far from the only fan. A local apparel company designed shirts and sweatshirts in Acton’s honor with the slogan, “Not All Heroes Wear Capes,” with proceeds benefiting at-risk youths, like Acton once was. Further, more than 120,000 people have joined a Dr. Amy Acton fan page on Facebook, where some have even turned Acton and DeWine’s 2 p.m. briefings into “Snackin’ with Acton” and “Wine with DeWine” happy hours.
Acton’s ascension to the spotlight has not been without criticism, however. Back in mid-March, she indicated that the presence of community spread meant that at least 1% percent of all Ohio residents were carrying the virus. “We have 11.7 million people,” she reasoned at the time. “So the math is over 100,000.” Some experts were quick to cast doubt on the claim as an exaggeration. But if it was an overestimate, it also served as a reminder that many still claim the U.S. doesn’t have enough testing kits or resources to know for sure.
“I do believe when we go back and look, we will find that people died and had this that were never detected, way before that moment I spoke,” she says. She also clarifies that the alarming 100,000 figure was meant to include those who were completely asymptomatic.
Acton indicates she’d rather arm people with as much relevant insight as possible at her press briefings than keep them in the dark. “I really believe that people, when given the information, will use that to help themselves feel prepared. I’m a person who likes to know the reality,” she says. “Maybe my childhood led to that, too.”
To compile and disseminate that information during the current pandemic, Acton wakes up in the wee hours of the morning and is fielding calls from Governor DeWine by 7 a.m. She then prepares for the press briefings, communicates with health administrators and other state and local health actors, and then works in the state’s emergency operations center before she finally crashes in bed between 8 and 10 p.m.
Not everyone needs to help lead a state’s pandemic response to make a difference, though. By staying home when you’re able, helping to supply those in need when you can and keeping in touch with loved ones during this period of isolation, all of us can do our part to help flatten the curve. “I used to say if aliens invaded us, it would be a blessing. We’d all finally be on the same team. We’d have this common enemy—well that is now,” she argues. “I’m an ordinary person. So if I can be doing something extraordinary seeming, every one of you can.”
But even she tries to carve out time for herself amid the chaos. “I get up around 4 a.m. because that’s a quiet time for me where I read and catch up,” she says. When she was a child living in a dreary basement, Acton says she turned to books like Charlotte’s Web, the Hardy Boys and Little House on the Prairie to escape from her reality. “I read and knew that it could be different than this,” she recalls. These days, her reading material consists largely of COVID-19 news and research rather than tales of farm animals and mystery. Though, she notes that she does have an assortment of lighter literature by the likes of Brené Brown, Joseph Campbell and Alan Watts waiting for her once the pandemic subsides.
“My husband makes fun of it because it’s like a dust-collecting pile of colorful books,” she says of her collection, “but they give me comfort to have them there.” It goes to show that some things—like what brings us peace in turmoil—never change.

Estimated Tax Payments: Answers for Small Business Owners and Self-Employed
Estimated income tax payments remain a fact of life for most of us who run our own businesses.
Those who are employed receive paychecks where the employer withholds taxes. But most business owners and the self-employed must to periodically send an amount called “estimated tax payments” to the IRS. You may also need to pay estimated taxes to your state taxing authority.
For new small business owners, meeting these tax obligations becomes a big adjustment. It seems particularly stressful when you’ve been used to having an employer take out income tax withholdings with each paycheck.
Learn more about the ins and outs of estimated tax payments. Small Business Trends spoke with Michael Hanley. Hanley works as Managing Partner of the Smithtown, N.Y. CPA Firm Merl & Hanley, LLP. He also authored three small business books. They include Effective Tax Planning for the MicroBusiness, Choosing the Right Structure for Your Business, and Why You Should Incorporate Your Real Estate Business.
We asked him to answer estimated tax-related questions that would be on the minds of many small business owners and self-employed persons.
What are Estimated Tax Payments?
The law requires individuals and businesses to pay taxes over the year, not just at “tax time.” Do you work for an employer?  Them your employer most likely withholds these taxes for you throughout the year. If you own a business or  employee yourself, things are different. You need to make these tax payments to the IRS and state on your own.
Most small business owners must pay estimated taxes quarterly and do not wait until April 15 or when other taxpayers file their returns. Those quarterly installments are for the amount we “estimate” we will owe.
Who Should Make Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments?
The rules for estimated tax payments vary based on the business type.
For sole proprietors, partnerships, S Corporation shareholders, single-member LLCs who elect to be taxed as a sole prop or an S corporation, or multi-member LLCs who elect to be taxed as a partnership or an S corporation: If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in taxes when you file your income tax return, most likely you will need to make estimated tax payments to the federal government (and, potentially, to the state government, too).
This group includes the self-employed, independent contractors, freelancers, and people with side gigs because no tax is automatically withheld on their income. People with rental or investment income may also need to make quarterly estimated tax payments as that is also taxable income.
There’s one exception to this rule: If your withholdings and tax credits add up to as least as much as your prior year’s tax, you do not need to make a federal estimated tax payment.
What About C Corporations and Multi-member LLCs?
For C Corporations and multi-member LLCs who elect to be taxed as a C Corporation: If you own a Corporation, you will need to make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe $500 or more with your tax filing.
Keep in mind that for most small businesses, it’s typically the owner, not the business entity itself, who is required to make estimated tax payments. That’s because most small business entities, such as LLCs, are what is known as “pass-through entities” for tax purposes and are taxed under the individual income tax.
“Small businesses typically do not make estimated quarterly payments because most small businesses are set up as flow-through or pass-through entities, which means that all taxes are paid at the personal level,” according to Hanley. “This means that the vast majority of all estimated payments would be paid by the business owners, not by the businesses themselves.”
Tax Tip: Remember that some business entities (example: non-pass-through entities) are, in fact, required to pay estimated taxes on behalf of the business entity itself. These include C Corporations, S Corporations that conduct business in New York City, and S Corporations that do business in Washington, D.C.
Who Doesn’t have to Make Estimated Tax Payments?
A small business need not pay estimated tax for the current year if it meets all three of the following conditions, says the IRS:
Your business had no tax liability for the prior year;
You were a U.S. citizen or resident for the whole year;
The previous tax year covered 12 months.
What Taxes Do Self-employed People Pay?
Quarterly taxes typically fall into two categories:
The self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare);
Income tax on the profits that your business made along with any other income.
For 2020, self-employment tax equals 15.3 percent. These business people pay net earnings up to $137,700 at 12.4 percent. For the Social Security portion you pay 2.9 percent on all net earnings for the Medicare portion).
Individuals with net earnings of $200,000 or married couples with incomes of $250,000 are subject to an additional Medicare Tax of 0.9 percent, Intuit says.
When are Estimated Tax Payments Due?
Estimated tax payments are divided into four payment periods throughout the year:
April 15th
June 15th
September 15th
January 15th
If your business is a Corporation, your estimated taxes are due on the fifteenth day of the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th month after the end of your company’s fiscal year.
Once you’re in the system, the IRS will send you estimated payment vouchers at the end of each tax year. However, whether you receive these payment vouchers or not, it is your responsibility to make payments for both the Federal and State taxes.
Also, notice that the January 15 quarterly payment is due, not in the tax year itself, but early the following year (but before your tax return is due). Note also that if the date falls on a weekend or holiday, it may be extended to the next business day.
Because these dates don’t align with the regular quarters — March,  June, September, December — you’ll need to mark them on your calendar and plan accordingly. Also, keep in mind you won’t need to make the January 15th payment so long as you file your 2019 tax return and pay what you owe by month’s end.
Tax Tip: If you are in a state where you are required to make state income tax estimated payments, pay your state estimated tax by December 31st. That way, you can claim a deduction for the tax payment in the current tax year.
How Do I File Estimated Taxes?
The IRS and most states allow for electronic payments of estimated taxes, in addition to paper filing.
If you can file electronically, Hanley says, it’s a good choice because you have better proof of payment. “Online payment confirmation is always more concrete than any proof of mailing or proof of delivery that the post office can provide.”
If you’re filing as a self-employed individual or disregarded entity (i.e., single-member LLC, partnership, or S Corp shareholder), you should complete Form 1040-ES (PDF), Estimated Tax for Individuals.
This form is a worksheet similar to Form 1040 that takes you through the calculation to help you determine your taxable income and payments contain blank vouchers for mailing your estimated tax payments. (You will need your prior year’s annual tax return to fill out Form 1040-ES.)
The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System
You can also make payments using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). For your state payment, you have to search online for the appropriate form, complete it, and send it in with your payment.
Corporations must submit their payments using EFTPS or can arrange for a tax professional, financial institution, payroll service, or other trusted third party to make deposits on their behalf.
Consider this in your first year being self-employed. The IRS says you will need to estimate the amount of income you expect to earn for the year. Did you estimated your earnings too high? Complete another Form 1040-ES worksheet to refigure your estimated tax for the next quarter. If you estimated your earnings too low, again complete another Form 1040-ES worksheet to recalculate your estimated taxes for the next quarter.
Tax Tip: In most cases, electronic filing also gives you the ability to schedule future payments. Avoid the need to remember or set calendar reminders throughout the year by scheduling all four estimated payments at once, electronically.
What about Making Estimated Tax Payments to the State?
If your state has an income tax, most likely, you are required to pay estimated tax payments toward your state income tax, also.
Nine states do not have a personal income tax on wage income. States that do not have personal income tax include Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. New Hampshire and Tennessee do not tax wage income but do tax interest and dividend income. However, be sure to check for any other business tax filing requirements.
Tax Tip: Go here to find a list of state tax offices you can contact to find out if your state is one where estimated income tax payments are required. You can also find other information and appropriate forms or electronic filing links for each state.
How much Should You Pay?
As mentioned previously, the IRS recommends using Form 1040-ES to calculate your individual estimated tax payments. Corporations should use the Worksheet on Form 1120-W (PDF) to calculate estimated tax payments.
Alternatively, if you expect the current year’s earnings to be relatively similar to last year, you can use the previous year’s tax return to calculate your estimated payments. Or, if you experience fluctuating income, you can choose to calculate your estimated taxes based on the actual amount you made that quarter.
You don’t need to show the IRS how you arrived at your estimated sum. However, it’s in your best interest to reach as accurate a figure as possible. Paying too little can result in an unfortunate surprise when it’s time to file your annual taxes, in addition to potential penalties for underpayment. Conversely, by paying too much, you’ve essentially taken money out of your business, and you could have invested that money for a higher return.
Looking at The Big Picture
Since individuals make estimated payments, you have to look at the big picture, not just your business liability. For example, you may not owe estimated taxes if your spouse is employed. You also may find he or she has enough taxes withheld.
The same goes if you are also employed and have sufficient taxes withheld from your own paycheck. Request that your employer or your spouse’s employer withhold more, to withhold enough to avoid having to file estimated payments. Simply complete a new Form W4 (PDF) for the employer. Also, if you had a refund due from the prior tax year, you can choose to apply that to the upcoming year.
If you’re unsure about your estimated tax obligations, it’s wise to consult a tax specialist who can advise you on the best calculation method for your business and how to accurately track and record your earnings and deductions. Just remember the more time you invest in your estimated tax payments, the easier your life will be at tax time.
Tax Tip: Use a CPA to help you prepare your taxes. Have the CPA generate an estimated tax payment schedule with amounts each year. Do this for the upcoming tax year, at the time you file your taxes for the previous year. Then follow that payment schedule exactly, unless your income or deductions change significantly.
Do I have to Pay Quarterly, or can I Make Monthly Installments?
It’s customary to pay estimated tax payments in four equal installments, but the IRS doesn’t restrict you to making payments quarterly; you can opt to pay more often if you prefer.
Some people choose monthly increments because it’s less strenuous on the pocketbook. Let’s say your business does well, and you owe $6,000 for the year. It’s likely easier to pay $500 per month than $1,500 four times per year.
What Happens if I Fail to Make Estimated Tax Payments?
The IRS charges a penalty if you fail to pay enough in estimated taxes throughout the year. They also levy a penalty for late or insufficient payments. It doesn’t even matter if you’re owed a refund when you file your tax return.
The estimated tax penalty amounts essentially to an interest charge. You pay for not paying taxes throughout the year. The interest rate for underpayments by individual taxpayers ads up to 6 percent for the 2019 tax year. The IRS sets this rate each quarter.
You avoid the penalty if you pay at least 90 percent of the tax for the current year. Or pay 100 percent of the tax you owed for the prior year, whichever is smaller.
According to NerdWallet, the IRS might give you a break on penalties if you fall into one of two categories:
You were a victim of a casualty, disaster or another unusual circumstance;
You’re at least 62, retired or became disabled this year or last year, and your underpayment was due to “reasonable cause” rather than “willful neglect.”
Are you “qualified” as a farmer or fisherman? Then pay less in taxes. The IRS considers you to be qualified if you earn more than two-thirds of your taxable gross income from farming or commercial fishing.
The bottom line: Stay out of hot water by knowing your responsibilities for estimated tax payments at the state and federal level and make payments in a timely manner. Just as important as knowing the rules and requirements, get yourself organized so you don’t inadvertently forget and slip up accidentally.
Tax Tip: Like any tax rule, the penalties have various exceptions. See IRS instructions on Form 1040-ES for more. Publication 505 (Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax) also has more information.
Myths and Errors to Avoid
Think about this when calculating your quarterly or end of the year tax liability. Always consider your business’s whole financial picture.
As Hanley explains: “Too many small business owners get caught up in the myth that ‘whatever my business bank account balance is on December 31 is what I will have to pay tax on.’”
Yes, the December 31 bank account balance remains be an instrumental figure when performing a quick cash flow calculation. But it tends to be VERY misleading. It doesn’t determine the profitability of a business.
Think about items like paying down debt, borrowing money, carrying credit card balances and paying personal expenses. Also consider repaying shareholder loans, distributing profits to the owners and more. These all impact how much money is in the bank at the end of the year. But they don’t affect your business’s profit.
Tax Tip: When figuring your estimated quarterly tax amounts, always calculate based on profit. This means income minus expenses.

However, while there was no signal of the long lost traveler my thoughts began to flow away; right here I used to be on a ship in Bangladesh’s Sundarbans filming a documentary, But how did I am getting here?

Despite not understanding all and sundry or any of the preparations, I without delay began packing my baggage and getting ready for the unknown.bangladesh same hotel
Fortunately enough, the unknown turned into the first-rate.
We had been a total of thirteen newshounds and filmmakers from around the arena who have been all on the same undertaking; to depict the splendor of Bangladesh. We stayed in the capital, Dhaka, for the primary 1/2 of the experience in which we met numerous ministers, visited historic museums and attended the kingdom’s biggest party, The Bangla New 12 months. We then flew to The Sundarbans, which is defined as the biggest mangroves inside the world and domestic to the famous Bengal Tiger, and stayed on a ship and explored the rivers and jungles for the remainder of the ride. And for each step and every occasion, I used to be there with my camera, documenting the whole lot.Bangladesh newspaper
Among the heat, loss of sleep and lugging around heavy equipment, I didn’t have the time to comprehend the reality of what was unfolding until my remaining night on the ship.
You were a victim of a casualty, disaster or another unusual circumstance;
