I don't understand why the hell HBO Rome (or as I call it, Game of Romes, since it feels like a re-skin of Game of Thrones ngl) needs to significantly change historical events.
The show takes place during the fall of the Roman republic! AKA one of THE most interesting, densely packed 15-year periods of history to ever take place!!!!
There is shit that happened during that time that is unbelievable except for the fact that we have proof! And if you as a writer want us to be able to believe those moments, you can't just randomly change shit to make it so actually it was your special OCs who brought down the Roman Republic!!!
Special shout out to Roman Cersei AKA 'Octavian's mom but for some reason she is literally just Cersei from Game of Thrones' [edit: I have just been informed this show came out like 10 years before Game of Thrones. So I guess Cersei is actually the new Atia!]
#listen I don't know that much about the actual historical Julia of the Atii but from what I can tell there are no accounts of her being#anything like Cersei Lannister. I'm guessing some HBO executive was like#the people love Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones. therefore this show also needs a Cersei Lannister. the chart says that Cersei sells!!#original#roman history#Julius Caesar#Marc Anthony#Cicero#Octavian Caesar#Octavius Caesar#Augustus Caesar#the Roman Republic#the Roman Empire#I mean it just drives me fucking insane it is already a fascinating period of history#within which you could easily write incredible and accurate historical fiction!#having your two main characters be two of Caesar's soldiers is a good idea! they could get up to incredibly interesting things!#who's to say they wouldn't be interacting with great historical figures??#but there's absolutely no need to actually change the historical events!#I cannot stress enough that the 8 years in which this show takes place WERE. FUCKING. WILD.#Cleopatra legitimately had herself delivered to Caesar in a laundry bag! as far as we know that actually happened!!!#it is enough to have your soldiers represent the lives of the everyman in a history mostly remembered thru the acts of 'Great Men'!#I actually think that is a hugely important aspect of historical dramas! but it doesn't work! if actually! they aren't everymen!!!!#when they pull off some weird rewriting of a major historical event it's distracting bc I actually would like to know what really happened!#and how a person who cannot control the tide of History was affected by that!!#but nooOoooOooo#instead I have to second guess every single fact presented because who gives a fuck! gods!! I was hoping to learn something!!!#hbo rome#woops i meant Atia of the Julii.

Online shipping, the fetishisation of gay men, and the romanticisation of queer trauma
An essay by me!
Word count: 2.8k
A link to the Google Doc version of this essay.
A big thank you to my friends Nathan @themeerkatnate, Mav @not-mavv , and Duke @dukedark-ness for reading this essay and giving me their thoughts as mlms on the topic. Make sure to check out their blogs and give them a follow!
So I was on a lovely website by the name of Twitter.com yesterday, just scrolling through while having my afternoon cup of coffee, when I saw that viral post of a girl reading a Larry fanfic through a classroom projector. I'm sure most of you have seen it. It's gone viral on Instagram, TikTok, and likely Tumblr too, and if you haven't come across it I'm positive you will soon.
Now, after getting through my initial reaction to that post which was, holy fuck, that's so embarrassing, I had a second reaction of... wait, this ship is still around?
And after I had some thoughts on the incredible permanence of some online ships and the weird obsolescence of others, I did get to thinking of how lots of these popular ships seem to stem from the same types of perceived relationship dynamics and homophobic stereotypes.
These online fandoms often seem to have an obsession with objects of queer trauma, such as having to hide a relationship, lying about sexuality for self-preservation, and even social rejection. So, after some opinions from my followers and the great archive that is the internet, I've decided to discuss some of the most popular examples of online shipping and the particular nuances they came with.
NOTE: Out of respect for all these people, I won't be sharing viral images or videos of them in perceived romantic proximity (or even kissing, as is applicable for some examples), but I will be describing certain moments I deem to be relevant. So even if you're unfamiliar with them, you won't be confused as to what I'm talking about.
NOTE 2: Although not all people within these fandoms were/are toxic, this essay is focused on the overall toxicity of the fandoms, and how they are toxic more so as a "hive" than as a group of individuals. When I refer to a fandom I don't mean every person involved in the fandom, but rather the collective impact of the group.
 1. Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson
This is arguably the most popular example of online shipping. The absolute permanence of this ship, and how its fandom never seems to fully die off even beyond the lifespan of One Direction as it once stood, is downright impressive.
I'm going to be the first to admit I was never in the loop with this fandom. My childhood best friend was actually a massive Larry shipper and asked me to beta read one of her fics, but that was before I even knew who tf Harry and Louis were! Not because I avoided the fandom or even because I rejected the online shipping, but just by coincidence, I delved into the world of pop punk music right when One Direction began gaining its popularity. I bought my first ever album, Riot by Paramore, in 2011- only a year after One Direction made their X-Factor debut. So, this fandom just bypassed me by a sort of weird coincidence.
But I don't need to be in the loop with this fandom to know the astronomical obsession with these two men, no, these two BOYS, was extremely toxic. In 2010, when One Direction made their debut, Harry Styles was only 16 years old. And Louis Tomlinson wasn't much older at 19! This made the two of them incredibly young when this unprecedented wave of shipping hit the internet, and although that must be traumatising for anyone, I cannot even fathom how overwhelming it must've been for two boys that young.
I'm 18, almost 19 now, and I cannot begin to imagine how scary it was for the two of them to have their every interaction nitpicked within an inch of its life by thousands upon thousands of people online. I do not know this myself, but from numerous recounts by some of my followers, this massively impacted Harry's and Louis' nondescript relationship in real life, seemingly driving the two previously close friends apart.
Now, before we move on, there's something we need to talk about. And that is the obsession with the dominance/submission dynamic within the world of gay shipping.
With almost every popular mlm (an acronym meaning man-loving-man) ship based on real people, it seems that fandoms have a particular fascination with power imbalances in these relationships. You don't even need to look at the insane amount of fanfictions based on BDSM to figure this out. In almost all of the examples I'll be citing today, there is an age gap within the perceived relationship and a person the fandom has seemingly decided to be the top/dominant figure.
Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson are 3 years apart in age. Although it isn't all that relevant now, an age gap of 3 years when you're in your late teens is a lot more significant. In 2012, for example, when this shipping really started gaining traction, Harry Styles was 18 and Louis Tomlinson was 21. That power imbalance, albeit not that significant, is enough for a fandom to latch on to. We'll see this a lot more in the coming example with Dan and Phil.
 2. Dan Howell and Phil Lester
It's impossible to have a discussion about internet shipping without talking about Dan and Phil.
Dan Howell and Phil Lester, although being popular YouTubers individually, are arguably one of the internet's most iconic duos. The two creators published their first videos together in 2009, and while their relationship was already a motive of speculation back then, the peak of the "Phan" shipping definitely came in the 2013-2016 era of Tumblr.
Now, I'm going to admit… I was actually on Tumblr when that happened.
The 2013-2016 period perfectly aligns with my middle school days (I started middle school in 2013 and high school in 2016), and I was not only on Tumblr back then, but I was on Wattpad too! Again, this wasn't a fandom I had much contact with as I had a huge anime phase in middle school and I was on Tumblr posting mainly photography and Soul Eater content more than anything.
But I did watch some of Dan and Phil's videos! And the occasional "Phan" content did not completely evade me as one of my closest friends in middle school had a fanchat for them. I wasn't involved in the fandom myself but they were actually one of the few English-speaking YouTubers I watched once in a blue moon (back then I watched mainly Brazilian YouTubers). One thing I did in fact notice over the years, around 2014ish perhaps, was that the two of them seemed to grow increasingly "awkward" around each other, in a way that many folks on the internet thought was reminiscent to Markiplier/Jacksepticeye, two YouTubers who also dealt with extraordinary amounts of shipping.
I'm not the only one who thinks this. The change in Dan and Phil's relationship, at least to the outside world, was clear to almost anyone who watched their videos for a while. I cannot blame them at all. The shipping was nuts. Between the countless fan videos, speculative comments, and insurmountable number of fanfics, there's no way the two of them didn't feel the weight of the shipping. The term "demon phannie" made its way into internet vernacular and there it stayed for years. Even Shane Dawson, who was one of the largest creators on the platform at the time, made several videos speculating on the nature of Dan and Phil's relationship and their sexual orientations.
There was even porn made in which actors with similar appearances to the creators were made to have sex on camera.
Now, this is actually a rare example where the two people involved in the ship actually came out as gay once the shipping seemed to die down. I'm incredibly happy Dan and Phil both reached a point where they were comfortable being publicly out, but I hate to say I'm shocked this day ever came. If I'd gone through what the two of them did, I don't know if I'd ever trust the internet.
And again, this ship's fandom definitely had an obsession with the power dynamics they thought existed between the people within the ship. Dan Howell is 4 years younger than Phil Lester, and was only 18 in 2009, when they started making videos together. From my personal understanding, the shipping was often quite focused on this dominant/submissive dynamic especially in discussions from their early relationship. And this is in no way exclusive to Dan and Phil.
This general fascination with the older man/younger man dynamic, in my opinion, plays into the homophobic stereotype that gay men are predators. The idea that gay men usually seek younger men, and somehow "convince" them to engage in homosexual relationships, is popular homophobic rhetoric. The popularisation, exaggeration, and fetishisation of these power imbalances, in age and/or in relationship dynamics, is directly harmful to the mlm community.
Not only that, but the romanticisation of a "hidden/forbidden relationship" is also detrimental not only to gay men and the mlm community, but to queer people as a whole. Queer people face huge trauma having to hide their relationships; queer attraction is already a societal taboo. And acting like this is good, or even desirable, is harmful to queer people as a whole, regardless of whether or not it's actually applicable to the people being shipped. It normalises this trauma not only to cisgender, heterosexual people, but to impressionable queer youth who grow to believe this type of trauma is to be expected.
3. Frank Iero and Gerard Way
This is another example where the perceived power imbalances between the two subjects of the shipping were directly exploited online. Now, this ship did precede the others mentioned above. If we're looking at this topic chronologically, this particular ship did come first in the shipping timeline. It's closer to the origin of the shipping extended universe, if you will.
In case you aren't familiar with them, Frank Iero and Gerard Way are both members of the American emo band My Chemical Romance. This ship is the first one here of which I don't recall the full popularity. It really peaked in popularity around the late 2000s, circa 2008. And I don't remember this moment online as in 2008, I was only 6 years old and believe it or not, I wasn't really all that concerned with rumoured homoeroticism as a first grader.
However, the popularity of this ship did carry over into the 2013-2015 Tumblr shipping boom. The emo fandom (or "bandom" as it was called) involving not only My Chemical Romance but other similar bands such as Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and Pierce the Veil, found its hub on Tumblr.
During this time, I did in fact listen to this style of music, but was focused a lot more on the anime side of Tumblr as mentioned earlier. Of course, I wasn't 13 years old like, "hey, this type of content might be harmful and can inadvertently perpetuate homophobic stereotypes," I just happened to care more about my silly little anime and ended up not getting involved.
This ship does involve a discussion that the others don't, however. With Frank Iero and Gerard Way, there is quite often a certain sentiment of, "Oh, they brought this upon themselves!" as the two band members very famously kissed during a show in 2007. In my opinion, though, this doesn't really justify all the obsessive shipping. If you look at Green Day, a band often grouped in with MCR as another famous pop punk group, the members don't follow too different of a trajectory. Billie Joe Armstrong has, on numerous occasions, kissed both of his fellow band members onstage- particularly Tré Cool, the drummer. And Billie Joe Armstrong is openly bisexual, which none of the members of MCR seem to be but some, or even all of Billie's bandmates, are too.
You'd think Green Day would face a lot more shipping as the more persistent onstage homoeroticism and Billie Joe's openness about his sexuality would warrant more "substantiated" speculation. However, Green Day faces nowhere near as much shipping as My Chemical Romance. Why is this? I actually don't know. It might've been because Green Day has been around for over a decade longer and generally has an older fandom, but I really am not that sure.
It could also be because of the lower lack of potential for forced relationship dynamics. The members of Green Day are all less than a year apart in age and are even similar in height. However, Frank Iero is 4 years younger than Gerard Way, who is not only the frontman of My Chemical Romance, but also considered to be the group's intellectual and creative "leader". Even beyond that, Gerard Way is quite visibly taller, and the perceived power difference between the two of them definitely did not elude their fans.
This difference could even be partly due to the lack of a "mystery" with Green Day. There's not as much to speculate as, well… the members of Green Day are already open about their sexual orientations. It might be that shipping in the Green Day fandom has less of a forbidden appeal for most people.
Of course, I won't just keep repeating myself, but my previous points about forced relationship dynamics still stand.
4. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch
Better known for their roles in BBC Sherlock as Sherlock and Watson, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch unfortunately had their roles follow them well into real life. This is the example I know least about, so have these thoughts from a follower by the name of @indubitably-a-goblin, who had the following to say:
"the main issues i had with it were:
a) they were both married at the time, freeman to amanda abbington and cumberbatch to sophie hunter (in which both had children)
b) the main reasoning for it was their chemistry in the many projects they've done together. which is, shockingly, their Whole Job. They're actors! That's what they're supposed to do! if they weren't good at interacting then they wouldn't be good actors! i don't know how people can't understand this.
c) they're real people. we don't know them. we aren't friends with them. we aren't their family members. we have zero right to be pushing this onto them and ruining their friendship by doing so. (this one relates to most of the ships you've mentioned though)
d) healthy friendships between two men are ignored so plainly in most medias and in fandom. its obvious that these two men have a relationship, but that doesn't mean it's a romantic one.
e) its fine to ship their characters, but actors shouldn't be treated as less-than-human or some sort of prop. they're doing a job, and once they are off-screen, they aren't here for your entertainment."
I believe she did a great job of summing it up on her own, and for the sake of avoiding redundancy, I'll leave it at that!
5. Corpse Husband and Sykkuno- an emerging yet subtle example
I am absolutely positive you remember how popular the game Among Us was a couple of months ago. And with the popularity of this game, some of its most prominent content creators became the targets of online shipping- as is the case with YouTubers and streamers Corpse Husband and Sykkuno.
Although the shipping involving these two creators is nowhere near as strong as it was/is with the examples above, I do think there is once again a reemergence of a common theme here. Whilst Sykkuno is known for his happy-go-lucky, almost "innocent" persona, Corpse Husband is the antithesis of this, known for his much darker and moodier personality.
Do I even have to mention what the common theme seems to be?
Again, although the popularity of shipping - at least with real people - seems to have died down a bit since the Tumblr shipping boom of the early to mid 2010s, I do believe this example is worth mentioning. Even though the creators are still close, they have in fact expressed discomfort regarding the shipping, and I can only hope the internet as a whole lets their friendship blossom and exist naturally without obsessive speculation.
My final thoughts
As explored in the essay:
The romanticisation of objects of queer trauma as a part of online shipping normalises queer trauma to both cishet and queer youth.
Online shipping, especially at a high intensity, can end up negatively impacting the very relationships they pine over.
The relationship dynamics often forced on mlm ships perpetuate homophobic stereotypes about non-heterosexual men.
If anyone else has thoughts on this matter, do share! This essay is moreso an opinionated observational piece and isn't meant to be taken as fact but rather just as my thoughts on the matter. I hope it was useful as a reflective piece regardless!

Phase One: Thor
Since I was looking up my past live-blog of the novel and realising how annoying and repetitive reading through it all is because of my having structured it as a bunch of reblogs, I’ve decided to organize it all into one long-ass post instead. In case anyone else wants to read it in the future. Or in case I decide to re-read it. Because I’m hilarious. 😅
SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
Tumblr media
My Hilarious Yet Wrathful Overview Of Phase One: Thor, Redux
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
If your son who’s to become king requires a babysitter to not screw it all up and also the idea of him being king is stressful enough to put you into a coma, maybe, uh… reconsider doing that? Just a thought.
But you see here why Odin was so deadset on Thor becoming king, despite him being ill-suited for the role. It’s not about what’s best for Asgard; it’s about personal legacy. Thor is Odin’s mini me, and Loki is very much not. There are places within the text where Odin laments Thor “lacking his father’s wisdom” (he’s definitely inherited your humility, though, Odin!), but he hopes for Thor to grow into a “wise king” like himself. Whereas he holds no such illusions (lol, pun) that Loki will ever take after him.
now with tag commentary! #this scene is in the script and both novelizations #(though in reading this novel seems to just be a more complete version of the junior novel? #idk i'm confused because they're supposedly written by different authors but so far the text is identical) #and it drives me insane each time i read it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Haha, I’m a warmongering piece of shit, isn’t it funny?”
I know, I know. I try to cut Asgard some slack for being such a militaristic culture because social changes happen slowly and when you live for thousands of years per generation, it makes sense that your views on things like war would be regressive. The text says Odin has ruled Asgard for tens of thousands of years (so much for taking Loki’s “give or take 5,000 years” line literally; sure, the Odinsleep would have extended Odin’s lifespan, but by that much? Idk).
Still, fuck Odin. Especially since he’ll eventually try to shame Loki for doing the same thing he’s fucking boasting about here. And on a much smaller scale too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
…is it, though?
I actually think Loki’s relationship with being the centre of attention is really interesting in its complexity and we don’t discuss it enough. I’ve said this before, but he strikes me as the sort of person who craves attention but also wouldn’t really know what to do with it if he had it. He craves it as a result of neglect, because he’s never been shown recognition or validation. This is why he seems to revel in it in Stuttgart, even in (or maybe especially in?) his brainwashed state. But he also frequently comes across as pretty introverted and has horrible self-esteem, so I think on another level, sustained, genuine attention would make him feel kind of uncomfortable. Loki seems to believe that in order to be loved or respected, he has to literally be Thor, though. And Thor has always been the centre of attention, so for Loki, attention is synonymous with respect.
I find Loki’s relationship with wanting attention especially fascinating because I too both crave and fear it. As a borderline, I need it. When no one is paying attention to me, I lose my sense of identity. I feel as though I literally cease to exist. It’s excruciatingly painful. And yet, I have no authentic sense of self; I’m just a chameleon, and the closer people get to me, the more likely it is they’ll see behind my mask. They’ll realise it’s all a show and that I’m actually no one. And then they’ll leave. I can’t help wondering if that’s how Loki feels sometimes too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, what? You mean goat. His horns are shaped like a goat’s. This is a ram:
Tumblr media
This is a goat:
Tumblr media
This is Loki:
Tumblr media
Do you see now? They’re like a goat. Not a ram. Not a cow. A GOAT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book was written before Ragnarok was a thing, so it may be unfair to connect the two, but it still seems worth noting that it was Thor who reduced Loki to being no more than a trickster to begin with. “You could be more,” my ass. Loki’s problem has never been that he was one-dimensional; it was always that the people in his life, including Thor, refused to see any other dimensions to him. Which makes those words particularly cruel—as if they aren’t cruel enough already, what with the physical torture and all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Always happy to have cause to point out that
Loki was on Thor clean-up duty their whole lives; he certainly was not trying to kill Thor.
People like to point to Loki’s attempted genocide of the Jötnar and attempted(-ish? lol) conquest of Earth as proof that he’s some kind of violent maniac. But in a little place I like to call reality, Loki was historically far less aggressive and bloodthirsty than his peers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Question: why is one conqueror evil and the other is righteously entitled to ruling over the Nine Realms?
Asgardian exceptionalism FTW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t even begin to imagine what would lead you to expect such a thing, Odin. 😂
Tumblr media
Uh, ‘cause it is?? And also their planet is MELTING without it??
This is all only within the first two chapters, btw. Lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
“Looking for answers,” my foot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOU WOULD THINK SO, WOULDN’T YOU??
#i mean unless you knew heimdall #he only commits treason on days that end in y
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
What’d I say? Thor clean-up dutyyyyy
Tumblr media
Just wanna remind everyone that this
Tumblr media
is why he’s smiling during this scene
Tumblr media
because it makes me laugh every time. 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
My heart breaks every time I remember that second excerpt because literally ALL OF IT happened to him when he survived falling through the wormhole. My poor boy. 😭
But also of note… Loki gets cold (and also does not like being cold). This interests me because 1) as many are aware, the prevalent headcanon that Loki has a low body temperature irritates me and 2) it possibly(?) lends weight to the theory that he may not be fully Jötun, whether by virtue of his birth or Odin’s spell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haha, look at this Feminist Icon™ trying to take credit for his female friend’s accomplishments! Truly inspiring.
#for some reason the ragnarok lovers have somehow decided that thor is both a feminist and lesbian icon #whatever that means 🤷‍♀️ #and i'm still trying very hard to figure out why #is it literally just because he *says* he respects women or whatever in that dumb rambly conversation with valkyrie?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ooh… you were so close to getting the point, Volstagg. So close. Take your tongue off Odin’s boot for just a couple minutes longer.
Also, the author just forgot the name of the Casket. How did this book get published? 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JUST LOOKING FOR ANSWERS, HUH?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because fuck Loki, amirite? He, uh… he’s a prince too, you know.
Also… Fandral, you dweeb 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
…am I reading too much into this, or did Odin just literally forget that Loki exists?
On the other hand, the author also seemed to forget Loki existed for most of this chapter, so who knows. 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmao @ Jane immediately trying to convince herself she’s too rational to be attracted to a stranger
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, though, big mood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just your periodic reminder that Thor’s sycophantic friends KNEW Loki was right and decided to throw him under the bus anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just as I’ve always said: That was it. That was their ENTIRE rationale. That Loki *could* have done it, therefore he must have. Please tell me these people have nothing to do with Asgard’s justice system.
…lol, jk, Asgard has no justice system.
Tumblr media
Ok, first of all, no.
Second: thank you, Fandral. You’re a self-absorbed cad, but also evidently Thor’s least stupid friend.
Thirdly, how…? First, it was, “Loki arranged all this because he’s jealous of Thor.” Now they’ve suddenly jumped all the way to, “All of Asgard is in danger.” What exactly does Sif think Loki is planning? He’s gonna, what… assassinate Odin and then sell Asgard to the Jötnar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Please stop hurting me.
Tumblr media
Just so there’s no confusion: this one sentence explains everything Loki did for the rest of the movie. It explains how a person who has been historically non-aggressive suddenly transforms into a warmonger. To prove himself a real Asgardian, like his brother and father and grandfather.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
…why did Odin fall into the Odinsleep in two completely different scenes in this book? I’m super confused.
Also, we really need to talk about how cruel it is of Marvel to keep forcing Loki to prove his loyalty again and again and again when he’s been doing so almost literally since we met him. And by “we need to talk about it”, I mean I need to tie Kevin Feige and co. to a chair and spend a minimum of five hours lecturing them on how poorly they understand their own fucking character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s just be clear here: they’re talking about Loki. They’re saying Loki, their LEGITIMATE king, is an enemy of Asgard, based on evidence so paper-thin it’s practically invisible. Just… please, let that sink in. Take a moment to appreciate how utterly fucked up that is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sorry (not really), but Thor was so much funnier before Ragnarok.
Tumblr media
This scene has always kind of bugged me. If Odin removed Thor’s powers, how come he can still control the weather? Confusing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what exactly was Thor’s plan anyway, before he realised he couldn’t lift Mjölnir? He was just gonna call on Heimdall to help him commit treason AGAIN, show up on Asgard against the expressed command of his king, and… Odin would just shrug and be like, “You got me, son! I guess I can’t keep you down. Welcome home!”?
…I mean, I guess that more or less is what happened in the end, but it’s hard to imagine it would have still gone down that way without all the stuff that happened with Loki. Idk.
#look what i'm saying is... thor is not exactly a thinking person #no one on asgard is a thinking person #except loki but he's crazy now so he's also thinking somewhat poorly lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cool, Thor. Now imagine feeling that way for ONE THOUSAND YEARS and develop a little fucking empathy for your brother.
But you won’t.
You’ll brush off his feelings of worthlessness as “imagined slights”. 😒
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nice that somebody knows how the royal line of succession works, I guess…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That sound you hear? Yeah, that’s just my heart breaking. NBD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, they mislabelled it the Casket of Eternal Winters. Now it’s the Cask of Ancient Winters. Author must have been thirsty when they wrote this. Lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look, not to nitpick, but this is not the recommended procedure when you see a storm that you don’t believe is of supernatural origin coming. I’m just saying. Lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uh… ‘cause he is?? And your pals are committing treason AGAIN, Thor, so it technically is responding to a threat to Asgard. Just FYI.
Anyways, this is an important point that doesn’t get made often enough. People want to act like Loki illegally usurped the throne somehow, but even without the deleted scene that explicitly shows Frigga passing rulership to him (a scene which is, for some reason, entirely skipped over in this book, but whatever), understand this: Loki could not have controlled the Destroyer unless he was legitimately King of Asgard. The fact that he’s able to do so is irrefutable proof that his rulership is valid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmao you little shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So… here’s my issue with this scene (and with Thor as a character): He always assumes that Loki’s acting out specifically to hurt him. That Loki’s entire life and thought process revolves around Thor. He does it in this scene, he does it in The Avengers… it’s just a chronic thing with Thor. Everything is viewed through the lens of Loki inexplicably hating him.
But that’s… just not accurate. Yes, Loki harbours a lot of jealousy towards Thor. But that’s not what’s happening in this scene. Loki is not trying to kill Thor here because he wants him dead; he’s doing it because Thor (and his friends) are getting in the way of Loki completing his ultimate goal. Loki tried to solve this problem non-violently, by lying about Odin being dead. It’s Thor’s friends who all but forced his hand by going behind his back and trying to bring Thor back to Asgard against Loki’s (and Odin’s!) direct orders.
For all the humility he’s learned in the past few days, this entire speech is still really all about Thor. About assuming that Loki’s doing this for personal reasons, because he holds a grudge against Thor for some unknown reason. This is implicit in his request to “take [my life] and end this.” It never even occurs to him that his friends are traitors to the Crown and Loki, as King of Asgard, is perhaps justified in pursuing them.
It also needs to be acknowledged that Thor’s apology here is hollow, even if it’s ultimately coming from his heart, because he has no idea what he’s apologising for. “Whatever I have done to wrong you” is not an apology. An apology addresses specific hurtful actions taken and commits to not repeating those mistakes in the future. Thor cannot commit to not repeating the hurtful things he’s done, because he doesn’t know what he’s done. Despite his best intentions, what Thor is doing here is actually kind of manipulative. He’s not addressing any substantive issue between the two of them; he’s just trying to talk Loki down. And it ultimately fails not because Loki doesn’t care or because he wants Thor dead, but because it doesn’t actually change anything.
Finally and only semi-relatedly, we should maybe at some point talk about the fact that Loki, who is stated to be a master tactician, has displayed a weird pattern of hardly ever being as lethal as he could be. He freezes Heimdall in place instead of killing him outright; he backhands Thor with the Destroyer instead of incinerating him; he, well… *gestures vaguely at almost the entirety of the first Avengers movie* Anytime the violence is even a little bit personal, he seems to hedge. Odd behaviour for somebody who’s supposedly super evil.

I’m sorry, I know I’ve pointed it out at least a hundred times before, but I just can’t encounter this scene in any form without taking a moment to appreciate how underrated and hilarious it is.
I also genuinely wonder how many Ragnarok stans who have accused me of having no sense of humour, have failed to laugh at moments like this one. Kinda feel like if you need to have the comedy spoonfed to you in the form of ass jokes, maybe you’re the one whose sense of humour is lacking. 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s be super clear: this is not what happened. Loki did not betray Odin; he was betrayed by Odin. He did not open Asgard to its enemies; he attempted, misguidedly, to destroy Asgard’s enemies. And he most certainly did not commit suicide out of a sense of guilt.
I’m not saying Loki did nothing wrong, nor am I saying he feels no regret for the lives he has taken. What I’m saying is there’s no indication that he believes he betrayed Odin or Asgard in the process. Which makes perfect sense, because he didn’t. Everything he tried to do was for Odin and Asgard. It was misguided and horrible, yes, but it can hardly be classified as a betrayal.
The insurmountable burden on Loki is not that he did terrible things, but that no matter what he does or how hard he tries, Odin will never look at him with anything but contempt. Consider once more these passages from the very beginning of the book, at Thor’s coronation:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Consider that this book goes to great pains to point out that Odin favours Thor because Thor is a warrior like him. And yet even when Loki embraces that, even when he acts more war-like than ever before, Odin rejects him— just as he always has.
There is a reason why this moment is the last time Loki will ever call Odin his father. Because he realises once and for all that, no, nothing he tries will ever be good enough; no, Odin won’t ever look at him with pride. That is Loki’s burden. That is why he lets go.
Tumblr media
The epilogue is really just two pages of making me want to vomit.
Tumblr media
There’s your party where Thor and a certain subset of the fandom insist that Loki was mourned. There’s barely an indication here that anyone even perceives his demise as a negative thing.
“[Sif] could see Frigga thought [Loki was dead] as well” also contradicts the tie-in comic for TDW, so I don’t know what the author is on about there. Unlike the majority of Marvel comics, the tie-in comics are canon to the MCU, so it’s a bizarre statement to make.
Tumblr media
COULD YOU SMEAR THE DEAD* ABUSE VICTIM A LITTLE HARDER, PLEASE? Fucking hell.
Tumblr media
No matter how many times I encounter this scene, in whatever format, I still fail to become desensitized to how disgusting it is. I realise there’s a good chance that whatever version of events Thor has been told was twisted at best; but how you can look at a man whose son has just committed suicide under any circumstances and say there will never be a better father than that guy, is utterly beyond my capacity to understand.
And Odin’s “you’ve already made me proud” line just feels like extra salt in the wound because, again, Loki let go because he realized Odin would never say those words to him. And yet they come so damn easily when it’s Thor.
Fuck this entire family so much. I think I hate them more than Loki does. Sometimes I wonder what he would think about that. How he would react to knowing that not only is he actually loved, but that he’s so loved that people are genuinely furious at the way he’s been mistreated. That there are people who regularly devolve into full-on rants because they just can’t contain how much anger they have towards the people who hurt him. I think he’d have a hard time wrapping his head around that concept, tbh.
Anyways, to end on a not-completely-depressing note, I’m still waiting for someone at Marvel to explain how Loki knew what Thor said in this scene after plummeting into a wormhole. ‘Cause he references this conversation as Fauxdin at the end of TDW. So like… ?? Did he steal Odin’s memories before he erased them? Because that would be… kind of neat, actually. And very clever. Not entirely ethical, of course, but it’s Odin, so fuck ethics.
WELP, THAT’S IT. Thanks for following along with my dumbassery, hope you enjoyed yourselves. Lol

Amor Vincit omnia ( Yoongi/ OC)
Chapter 14
"Since when did you start cooking like shit?" Yoongi snapped angrily, glaring daggers at Seokjin as the latter emerged from the kitchen ridiculous apron around his waist and hand buried in mittens. Seokjin's eyes narrowed into slits and Namjoon looked back and forth between them before rushing to the rescue.
"Ignore him hyung, he's just going through some withdrawal symptoms right now." He said, looking amused as he stared at Yoongi.
He was surrounded by idiots.
"What the fuck are you on about?" He snapped.
"Oh, come on. You got drugged with that pretty wife of yours and now that she isn't here to fulfill all your ' White-knight' syndrome fantasies, you can't function anymore. " Hoseok said with surprising insight but Yoongi could feel frustration build up inside him , enough to make him flex his fingers so hard the chopsticks in his hand snapped in two.
"also, the reason Seokjin hyung's food, which you've been eating for decades by the way, tastes like shit, is  because you got a taste for something sweeter. And like the idiot that you are you chased her away." Namjoon added.
Yoongi could not believe the gall of these guys.
"For the last time she's  the one who wanted a fucking divorce . Besides , I never wanted to .." send her away. I still don't . God damn it , how could she do this to me...
"Never wanted to-?" Seokjin prompted.
"Never wanted to marry her in the first place. " He lied.
Najoon scoffed.
"You're so full of shit it isn't even funny anymore." He said roughly.
Yoongi couldn't agree more, at least the last part of it.
it wasn't really funny anymore. at first...at first he'd been fascinated and amused by her wish to please him. The way she seemed to bend to his will like a reed caught in a storm. He was used to head strong, he was used to fighting and he was used to being manipulated. What he wasn't used to was home cooked meals, a girl who literally thought about him all day. Who spent every second making sure he didn't have the slightest thing to complain about.
And at the face of such sincere adoration, he'd been completely powerless. He couldn't yell the way he did with Hye Mi, he couldn't flatten her against the nearest wall and screw her brains out . He couldn't ...react, period. She looked like the lightest touch would snap her in two and it was like he was five years old again, staring at his mother's expensive porcelain collection, completely fascinated and unable to look away . In love with the beauty and the perfection but well aware that one wrong move would shatter it into smithereens .
And he would never forgive himself if that happened.
"Yoongi you should go and get her back. You know that right?" Jimin said gently and that made him pause. Jimin wasn't one to be unreasonable.
"i don't have to do any such thing. Are you guys not hearing me, she was the one who left . " He said, angrily.
He would kill the next person who spoke up, he decided. With his bare hands.
"Did you even ask her to stay, you little shit?" Seokjin said and Yoongi frowned because, Seokjin was literally the only person he probably couldn't kill. The guy was built like a fucking wall .
"I told her I was willing to start a marriage with her but she wanted more... I don't even know what more means. I don't do feelings. " He said bitterly.
"Correction: you've never done  feelings. It's not some incurable disease that will kill you. What could possibly be so bad in just admitting you cared for her." Hoseok said and Yoongi felt something inside him just freseze up in violent rejection.
Because that's when people took the chance to destroy you. When they realized you cared.
His father had been a lot like him. Reserved. But protective to a fault. He'd never gone out of his way to do romantic things but Yoongi had known his father had loved his mother more than anything else in his life. He'd seen women throw themselves at the handsome, riche CEO and he'd seen the way his father would always refuse, palm tapping his chest immediately. His father had later shown him that inside his pocket he always carried a snap shot of Yoongi's mother there.
"It reminds me that she's the most important thing.  A  good woman's love, son is the most generous and yet paltry thing. it's so much more than you deserve but never enough.  It makes you feel like the strongest man and the weakest too, often at the exact same time. When you find a love like that , hold on to it and don't risk it for anything. Because a good woman's love, that's something you'd have to be real fucking lucky to have.  " The older man had told Yoongi. Yoongi had found it toe-curlingly cheesy at that age but he'd also felt envious. How did you know things like that he'd always wondered. And he'd been sure that his father had got it right.
And then his mother had gone and cheated on his father.
The old man wasn't the first to know.
Yoongi was the one who walked in on them. And watching his father send loving glances at his mother, knowing she wasn't faithful had made Yoongi feel a level of rage and helpless impotency that he'd not been able to bear. His mother had stopped of course but she'd never confessed.
When finally, years later the man had realized he'd been betrayed, Yoongi had watched his strong , powerful father, his hero... crumble and disintegrate in front of his eyes. Something inside him had been destroyed with his wife's betrayal.
Yoongi would never let a woman destroy him like that.
And it terrified him even more because Ji Soo was so much similar to his mother it made his breath catch sometimes. It was probably one of the reasons his parents had chosen her for him. Just like his mother, Ji Soo exuded perfection, never raised her voice and carried herself like a queen. She was breathtakingly beautiful, the perfect high society wife, all grace and classy elegance.
A good woman.
A good woman who really did make him feel like the weakest and strongest person everytime her gaze met his.
A good woman who could turn him into a broken mess of a man if he gave her the power to do so.
"But then, are you actually okay with her being with another man?" Namjoon said in genuine curiosity and Yoongi flinched. That was just so close to what he'd been thinking that his mouth went a little dry.
"I don't control her. " He said roughly.
But I may kill anyone who comes within a few feet of her.
"That's good. Because you do know that literally every guy in our circle is angling to be her next...." Taehyung said casually.
It happened within a second.
One moment Yoongi was sitting on the couch and Taehyung was on the floor, stretched out on the carpet. The next second Tae was pinned against the wall, Yoongi's forearm pressing into his throat and choking off his air supply.
"What the fuck did you just say?!" He hissed, seeing seventy shades of red as the words registered inside his head.
Jimin pulled him off Taehyung looking furious.
"What the actual fuck is wrong with you, you psycho?" He shouted and Yoongi tried to gather his thoughts.
What was wrong with him indeed. ?? why did the thought of anyone near her make him feel like ripping someone to shreds with his bare fingers??
"Fuck...I... I'm going insane. Why can't I fucking forget her...?" He muttered under his breath reaching for his jacket and mumbling vague apologies to Taehyung who looked traumatized.
But even as he rushed out of the room , eager to go for a long drive he knew that he couldn't forget her.
Girls like Ji Soo were impossible to forget. He could try all he wanted. He would never be able to forget what it had felt like to have her in his life. It was funny but it was the little things that stuck to his head and refused to budge. Her scent, the way that one little strand of hair refused to stay tucked behind her ear no matter how many pins she jabbed into the thing. the way that small mole at the corner of her mouth moved up and down with her smile. The wal her breasts filled out her clothes, reminding him that even though she acted like a child, she was still very much a woman.
He groaned.
It takes him twenty minutes of driving to realize that he's somehow managed to arrive right in front of her studio. This was a whole new level of screwed up, he thought in disgust, moving to put his car in reverse when he catches something in the rearview mirror.
A white Lamborghini with a disturbingly familiar number plate.
Wu Yi Fan.
He was out of the car and running across the street at breakneck speed, hands already moving to the knife he carried at his waist. If the bastard was within breathing distance of Ji Soo, he was going to slice his throat and rip his intestines out his neck.
He took the stairs, two , three at a time and stopped short, his blood running cold when he saw Yi Fan coming out of the studio, a gash on his forehead, bleeding. The guy took one look at Yoongi and snarled.
"Your bitch of a wife's done it now Yoongi. I'm going to wreck her life ....Just wait and watch..." He shouted, and Yoongi almost went after him before his mind registered that Ji Soo was still in the studio and God, she could have been hurt.
"Come near her again and I'll fucking rip your guts out..." He snarled , already opening the door to the video.
Nothing prepares him for the blow to the head, a crushing punch that makes him drop to his knees as his vision swims and pain reverberates all through his skull. He blinks, vaguely aware of hot, wetness seeping out of the back of his head. A trap, he thinks feeling stupid. He'd been out without his usual security guard and news like that traveled fast when you were one of the most wanted guys on the country. Some crazy bastard had probably followed him and set him up for an epic misstep. One that was probably going to end with his body, face down in the Han river tonight.
And he'd walked right into it, too distraught at the thought of Ji Soo being hurt to even consider that it may be a trap.
Looks like she'd ended up destroying him despite all the walls he'd managed to put up.
Someone grabs the back of his head and he momentarily blacks out from the pain of it.
"It's Yi Fan....Remember me? You really think you can come after my empire and not get killed over it? You're going to be the benchmark for what happens when someone messes with EXO. But you know what....I'm not going to kill you now. I have unfinished business with that wife of yours. " He said and Yoongi felt his heart jump to his throat. Shit, shit shit....his vision was too blurred to focus and his head felt like it was filled with cotton wool.
"Come here."
The kick to his back sent him sprawling forward, vaguely aware that his wrists had ben tied behind him, arms twisted in an excruciatingly painful angle. He blinked.
Ji Soo. Don't let her get hurt. Don't let her get hurt. Don't let her get hurt.
The phrase kept playing inside his head incessantly and he couldn't fucking focus on the here and now because this is what happened when you let a female into your head.
"We'll just send word to that girlfriend of yours, that she can collect you after bringing Ji Soo ssi to me. . She'll drag your wife here in no time." Yi Fan laughed and slipped a blindfold over his eyes. He yanked him to his feet and dragged him out of the studio.
Yoongi felt his blood go cold as he got shoved into the back of a van. He had no idea where they were taking him.
He had the sickening realization that Hye Mi really would do it. she didn't care what happened to anyone as long as Yoongi was safe. He'd never given it much thought but now that he thought about it, he realized that what Hye Mi felt for him was closer to obsession than anything else. Think . Think.
But he felt helpless. There was nothing he could do if Hye Mi somehow managed to drag Ji Soo here.
His only hope was that one of the guys would realize he wasn't reachable and somehow come looking for him.
