"It's okay, Khalan. I'm right here. You're safe."
some Pain based on a few new developments within the SMP story. got a decently long explanation under the cut, for anyone interested.
so @cookieg122 and I decided that Khalan and Aya eventually find themselves in Aya's home dimension - a world ruled by a race of powerful fairies who are hell-bent on eternal conquest and proudly declare their violent Empire as the strongest in the world. Aya was their princess, having disappeared under mysterious circumstances (aka when she arrived in Drehmal), and her older brother had been searching for her ever since.
her sudden return ended up placing Khalan under suspicion though - as Aya's brother wrongly assumed that Khalan was responsible for "kidnapping" Aya and had him arrested as a result;; the corrupt king also got involved, hearing terrible rumors that were quickly circulating about Khalan and believing that he had hurt his daughter, so he made the swift decision to have Khalan publicly tortured and executed the next morning (multiple times over; since Khalan is immortal) as a way to make an example out of him to the Empire's subjects and remind them of what happens if they step out of line and threaten the royal family.
so of course Aya saves him!!!! she convinces her brother that Khalan is innocent so he also helps out with the rescue, and between the two of them they manage to stand up to their dad and save Khalan from a terrible situation ;n;;
there's like. so SO much more to this concept that I can't really explain, but that's roughly what's going on within the feelsy art here;; I kept thinking of just. the intense emotions happening within that moment, of Aya stepping up and taking on the role of comforter even though that's normally Khalan's thing. role reversal tropes always get me, and tbh Khalan just needs a moment to break down and process just how terrifying that whole situation was before he can help Aya deal with everything too;;
srry this got long, I wasn't sure how else to explain this pic without going into some detail. but I hope y'all can appreciate the feels anyway ;o;

colin should 'suffer' for penelope
aka: 5 short reasons why wanting colin to 'suffer' or 'grovel' or whatever other bullshit this fandom keeps pulling is stupid and makes no sense and should have been buried ages ago, how is this still a thing?
1: it sets a terrible and unhealthy dynamic between an endgame couple
especially considering Polin's motif is that of a mirror, if Colin is expected to grovel or suffer for Penelope's affection and forgiveness, it only stands to reason that Penelope then, too, would have to reciprocate. how Penelope treats Colin's ills is setting the precedent for how he's expected to handle her own against him, of which there are many. giving him the cold shoulder, holding what he said over his head and rubbing it in his face, potentially not even explaining why she's upset at him: these are not signs of a mature woman ready for a marriage to ANYONE
2: Colin's slights against Penelope are considerably less harmful than Penelope's against Colin's and it makes no narrative sense for her to be on her high horse about it
'he ruined her prospects' 'he talked about her behind her back' 'he laughed at her' (we don't even know if that one's true, frankly speaking)
but Penelope did the exact same to him and she did so first. Please remember that Penelope is the reason Colin and Marina broke up, and it was her express goal the entire time. Penelope humiliated Colin and Marina both by exposing them publicly (not to mention rubbed the salt into the wound for days afterward). Penelope didn't even think about Colin's feelings because she tried to confess her crush on him immediately after his engagement went poof. Penelope holding Colin accountable for what he said without herself recognizing the ways in which she's hurt him, too, makes her out to be a hella hypocrite
3: it's weirdly catholic on main?
love isn't about suffering points or penance or guilt and i'm tired of Christianity pervading every damn thing. sorry not sorry, some of us want an actually fulfilling love story
4: y'all are just mad Colin didn't love Penelope back from jump and it's a revenge fantasy
which, fine, that's what fanfic is for, but it's OOC, y'all are aware of that, right? because if he DID want her from the start, we all know that it wouldn't be Polin? why are you shipping a friends to lovers ship if you INSIST that the friends to lovers dynamic is less than? guess what? unreciprocated love is kind of part of the deal. you don't hold a grudge against your friend for not loving you back immediately. Colin shows he cares about Penelope in SO MANY WAYS that somehow are completely invalidated because it isn't meant to be romantic? imma say it: fuck you if you think that way. friendships are important and beautiful and deep and fulfilling with or without romance. Colin sticking his neck out for Penelope to help her family from Jack's scheme? an act of love. Colin sending Penelope letters after her father passed? act of love. Colin telling Penelope she's 'really very good' and holding her hand in appreciation of her coming to talk to him? act of love. if you think those acts of love mean nothing just because he isn't fucking her seven ways to sunday, maybe analyze your own viewpoint of relationships and ship Pen w/ some random stranger who makes heart eyes at her tits from jump
5: it makes Penelope an asshole to her own long term partner
dude, if a friend of mine insisted I crawl on hands and knees to determine whether they want me back in their lives, i don't want to be around that person? so many of these narratives make Penelope a straight up terrible person. if you want your partner to suffer? you probably don't actually like them very much, but Polin is narratively MEANT to be the couple that likes AND loves one another. be real, if your friend ghosted you for months, gave you the cold shoulder when you tried to talk again, treated you like shit (you can't argue that him 'suffering' isn't treating him like shit in some way shape or form) as you tried to apologize, and then you find out that she was the reason you and your ex broke up and she wrote straight up nasty things about your family for YEARS, you would want absolutely nothing to do with that friend. why should Colin be expected to be any different? do these two not deserve a lovely love story built on love and affection and trust and honesty? a healthy happy relationship in which they see one another and appreciate one another for all they are? no? so why do you ship them?
+1: it's oversaturated in this fandom
polin is a fantastic ship. how is THIS their main trope?
find a new fucking idea, PLEASE

Nan remembers what it was like having siblings.
Her brother - once the smallest daughter, is now old, fat and handsome, and integrated himself into the village. Finding two husbands, and by extension gaining a wife in law. He has lots of children and grandchildren. Siru babysits the lot of them.
Her sister, tall and clawed, never knew when to be quiet. Their father hated this. She never knew when to be quiet, until she slipped out in the heart of night, and was never seen from again. Their father hated this even moreso. He never called their sister by her first name again. Nan always wished he was mourning in secret. Or at all.
She always felt like the last person remembering her sister - though to be fair, her brother was much easier to remember by comparison. He was still here. Visible. She didn't like the siblings separating, but couldn't have left her father and brother behind in pursuit of the lost chickling. And Father Yngve, well.. He was done running after, when someone in his life went.
This all ran through Nan's mind, as she packed a fourth sandwich into the shoulder bag. It was.. Something akin to 3am - She thought, glancing at the grandfather clock in the livingroom. That clock stopped years ago. Siru used to crawl inside it when she was a wee peep. Nan smiled, but it dissolved. Yes, Siru.
She'd always compared her runaway sister to Lassi. Fair comparison, really, even though Lassi made his departure very loud.. Nan stopped to hold herself. But thinking about it now, the circumstances matched Siru better. The oppressive silence around it all. Really, the two women even looked like each other - all thanks to Old man Yngve's genes, most of which Nan hadn't gotten herself.
She heard shuffling. Siru was getting ready to leave again. So Nan had been on time with the preparations afterall. She'd always thought of herself as adaptable. She could hear her daughter trying her damnest to sneak past the kitchen - usually she was good at it, but unbeknownst to Siru, she often got away because Nan let her..
This time would be different.
"Rise and shine Siru darling. I made you some ehh, let's say early breakfast!" Nan said, barely turning back to spot Siru frozen by the doorway, gobsmacked to have been noticed. She didn't reply anything. But Nan was used to that by now.
"You could have one sandwich now or we can just hit the road. I already ate." Nan said, before she could slip away again, walking up to Siru with her bag slung over her shoulder.
".. Huh"
"Ykno.. Get going? Wherever it is you're going - I'm coming along." Nan clarified. Siru still looked a bit flabbergasted, creasing her brows. "No way."
Nan crossed her arms. "Yes way. You just show me where to." Siru's presence tightened at the words, and Nan could tell there was slight panic swirling within her, trying to come up with some excuse to leave her home.
See, Nan had done all this thinking. Unlike back then, now, she could afford to follow when someone was going. She'd let her sister walk out and slip away, same with Lassi. But really all that was left to stay for was the house. Siru of course still came back after her little trips, but really, why not go see where it took her?
Siru opened her mouth after a second of feverish thinking, but Nan stopped her. "Now firstly, I've taken time off work, and secondly if you dare say it's too dangerous for me, you underestimate your old hen!" she proclaimed, tapping the old gash on her jawline. Siru promptly shut her mouth. Nan walked up to the front door with a certainty and confidence, that could not have communicated how deeply she didn't know what might be in store for them. And how deeply she truly worried for her daughter. Speak of whom, was still stalling behind, barely ready to open the front door.
"Guessing you.. don't trust me..?" Nan let out, gaze falling to the floor humbly. Siru scrambled up to her, voice getting caught in her throat. "I-I do, I just.."
"But?"
"I do trust you. But.." Siru trailed off. But not whatever we're going to run into out there - was the implication. Nan tightened the grip on her bag for a bit, leveling her anxious mind. She sighed and took Siru's hand into hers, giving it a squeeze.
"Well, whatever is going on.." Nan looked up to her eyes. "It can't be worse than not having you around anymore. I love you, Siru. No matter what."
Siru seemed struck by her words. Torn, disbelieving even. "No matter what..?" she asked, almost a whisper. It felt gravely serious. Nan patted the back of Siru's palm with her other hand, putting a smile on her face. "Well of course, if you're up to something nefarious, I'll steer and scold you however needed, but that don't mean I wouldn't love you all the same! Quite the contrary, even, wouldn't you say..?"
And wasn't that fair?
