Hi! I really like Scrappy, and I heard you've worked with some TV writers for Scooby-Doo?

I'd like to ask you some questions, but before I do I wanna say some things:

In fact, I looked up the writer’s guild stats and you actually wrote some of the episodes for the original show he was on, as well as some shorts!  “Neon Phantom of the Roller Disco” and “When You Wish Upon a Star Creature” are both really solid episodes and a lot of people really enjoy the Star Creature’s futuristic design! Of the shorts episodes you did I think "A Bungle in The Jungle" and "A Close Encounter of the Scooby Kind" and "Surprised Spies" the funniest. I could go on! But then I would never finish this ask ^^;

And I gotta tell you this. I may have been born decades after those episodes aired, but I’ve seen every single one-the first season, the 99 shorts, the 13 ghosts, the New Scooby Doo Mysteries, the DTV trio, all of ‘em, and I absolutely adored them, thank you so much for helping with that. 

When Fred and Velma and Daphne disappeared, after 1979, did Scrappy have something to do with it? I know Duane Poole said in an interview that Scrappy was easier to focus on, and that Fred and Velma, and Daphne had a hard time competing with his energy or something, but the executives wouldn’t have thrown all their eggs into one basket with the pup after one season, would they? I have to know. Even if it turns out that’s what happened, I know that it’s not really Scrappy’s fault either way, I’m just curious.

I've heard from Mr. Poole's interview that when you were figuring out Scrappy and stuff you guys just gathered around and brainstormed with Joe Barbera. Did you or anyone else that you know of look to past ideas for inspiration?

What was the favorite episode you wrote?

I also heard from Mark Evanier’s account that Scrappy was originally feistier but some scripts were altered. How were the scripts changed before and after that alteration?

Also, in the nineties, why did Scrappy go away? I mean, I know some people didn't like him, but it was more just "he had his time" not the kinda hate you saw in the early 2000s right?

This is un-Scrappy related. Did you guys do your own blocking, did anyone at HB ever split the writing and blocking between multiple people? Just curious.

Also, I know that the original Scrappy series gets some hate, but I am not one of them and there are so many people who love the work you did and what Scrappy-Doo means to them. You guys did an awesome job with the series and there are tons of fans who still remember and cherish the work that you and the others did. Don’t let the haters get you down. Thank you SO SO SO SO MUCH!

First of all, thanks very much for your kind words! The work I did on Scooby-Doo And Scrappy Too! was my very first animation work, and besides being a shed-load of fun, I learned an incredible amount about screenwriting in general, and animation writing in particular, from Tom Swale and Duane Poole (God rest them both). They were fabulous teachers, patient and smart—a pleasure to work with, and (in between work times) extremely funny guys whose senses of humor meshed perfectly with mine.

About Fred, Velma, and Daphne disappearing post-1979: unfortunately I wouldn't be in any position to know whether Scrappy had anything to do with that. I'd very much have been the newest and most junior writer in the room (and we're talking about a time when there weren't even "rooms" as we think of them now: they hadn't been invented yet). But though their job title was "story editor", in terms of the work they were doing, Tom and Duane were what we would now think of as showrunners... and those deliberations and/or decisions wouldn't by any stretch of the imagination have included me. :)

It's interesting to hear what Duane had to say about the disappearance. But I feel pretty sure that a decision involving so many characters would not have been made solely at Tom's and Duane's level. Some kind of approval or signing-off would've had to happen at the highest executive levels at H-B... or at least that's my take on it.

As for brainstorming with Joe Barbera: it seems to me quite likely that that was just how things happened. Hanna-Barbera at that point was a surprisingly comfortable, casual kind of place—relatively friendly to newcomers, and with a sense of under-the-surface goofiness that tended to surface without warning. The founders, in particular, had a reputation for being very hands-on and accessible. I kind of regret that those brainstorming sessions were before my time.

Re: favorite episodes: you'll have gathered that I did a fair amount of writing for Tom and Duane over the years (there's more detail on my IMDb page, which fills in some gaps but still isn't complete...), so frankly it's hard to pick a favorite. But the first one I tend to think of is my very first one, "The Hairy Scare of the Devil-Bear". ...And honestly, one of the funniest things about the scriptwriting process on these was the business of crafting outlandish titles: the goofier, the better. Tom and Duane were past masters at this... and no one will ever get me to discuss the really dirty ones that were floated during story conferences. ...Anyway, I've always been a bit of a Tuckerizer, and in that first episode—though it wasn't anywhere near as polished as later episodes would be—I had so much fun sneaking in the very first of what would become any number of friends' names. A simple pleasure, perhaps. But hey, I'm a cheap date. :)

Re: Mark Evanier's comments about earlier Scrappy scripts: Mark had been working at H-B for a good while by the time I got there, and I'd consider his opinions important. But I've got no useful data on how scripts might have been changed before I got there. Sorry I can't be of more help on this.

As to why Scrappy might have gone away in the 90s….? I don't really have any useful data on that either. By that time, I was in the early stages of being married to @petermorwood and living in Europe, and was out of the loop on things that were going on at Hanna-Barbera.

Finally, as regards blocking: when one was writing animation in the 80s, the received wisdom was that one should write almost entirely in "master shots"—so that one didn't call specific angles in the screenplay unless they were extremely important. The idea being "Don't direct in the script. Let the director have something to do." And blocking would certainly have been included in the concept of what the director was supposed to be doing. ...But at the same time, story editors would naturally have seen the storyboards that were produced in-house, and would have had input into angles and camera movement at that stage… So, in that way anyway, blocking and writing were certainly split.

Meanwhile, thanks again for the nice words about what we were doing! It was very enjoyable work, and the continuing popularity of these shows makes it more enjoyable, even now. :)

Ok I've seen nothing but countless theories about puppet history lately but here's my it's-not-10pm-and-im-actually-coherent take

See this box right here? This generator looking bitch? Well, she's got a tube that's connected to the stage. The professor was being really defensive about it AND we got that close up of the box. She's gonna be important I can feel it.

Next: What's up with the professor's lighting? Does it seem more red than normal? I went back and looked through some old episodes and in the beginning it's always more of a purpleish blue. Even across seasons this lighting stays the same. Like look at these two shots. The first is from the Pinkerton episode, the second is from the new one. The new one even seems more washed out and less rich than the other.

Next, the glitch at 13:11. When I first saw it I thought it was my computer being weird, but then I went back and saw it happen again. I've looked at that glitch so many times. While this may be completely incorrect, the colors of the glitch kinda match the colors of Asmodeus. And if it's not that, it's a glitch in the power supply from that generator and our little blue ballsack is a hologram or something similar. For the life of me I can't get a sc of the glitch so just go back and watch it.

Now, the weird voice at 13:50 (and other places). I saw someone else say that this is a genie voice, and I honestly can't tell if he's impersonating the noise the algorithm machine makes or that the genie (or whatever thing is controlling the professor) fucked up talking for a sec and he went haywire.

Now, this may just be me, or does the professor look more sinister this season? We know he has a weird fascination with flesh but something about the eyes seem wrong. Under the lighting in the theater they look completely red as opposed to their normal brown. I don't think that they're using a different puppet but who knows.

And, at 20:09, Ryan says "You know a lot about ghosts, professor." and the professor replies "Yeah, yeah I do." Now, this may just be another callback to ghost files, but also, could the professor be a ghost himself? Or met ghosts when he was canonically dead?

ALSO, RYAN WON? But, I went through the video (and while I may have counted wrong) Sara got 4 points while Ryan only got 3. Is this going to be a pattern where Ryan always wins?

In conclusion, I didn't cover every single thing in this post, and I might not, but here are my takes for now. More episodes are gonna have to come out to know for sure about some of these things, and I am very excited for when they do.

Full propaganda: Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu

1, Wen Kexing: Look this man shouldn't be adopting kids because he's kinda evil and also the leader of an army of criminals and outcasts, a position where he killed his way to the top at a young age, BUT when he was still just a kid he found Gu Xiang and knew that if he didn't take care of her that she would die and became her father/brother/master (it's complicated). And then many years later when he's off doing his revenge quest he basically ends up adopting Chengling who is freshly an orphan which was kind of Kexing’s fault (it's complicated), but Chengling doesn't mind that his new dads are a little evil (his other dad is Zhou Zishu who basically created the CIA in fantasy ancient China). And then Gu Xiang falls in love with Cao Weining which puts Kexing into protective father mode and he goes all overbearing father-in-law on Weining, but he comes around when he's sure that Weining will treat her right. And then when Weining's family/sect turns on him, Kexing becomes one of the few people left he could call family (also with the rest of the group).

2, Both: Wen Kexing- the man has his entire life planned around an evil revenge plot yet somehow while becoming the Ghost Valley Chief he manages to take Gu Xiang (who must of been a young girl at that point) under his wing. Sure the woman in the unfaithful manor probably helped him out with her, but still she manages to come out of the Ghost Valley probably the least messed up out of anyone. Also he goes total protective dad the second Cao Weining starts courting her, literally nitpicks everything the man does, yet in the end he gives them his support in the marriage and even holds it on his turf, opening up the Ghost Valley to normal (warrior/cultivating) people for their wedding. His positive interactions with Zhang Chengling are to a less extent, especially as the boy is so embroiled in his revenge scheme, but none the less he teaches him and treats him decently especially as the spend more time with each other.

ZZS- He gets tangled up in WKX’s whole revenge plot because he promises to protect and escort the boy, Zhang Chengling, to the safety of one of his martial uncles, and yet before we even hit the halfway point in episodes (at least I think it is) he’s taken the boy under his wing as what is essentially a disciple, even though he is the last member of his sect and was ready to let it die with him. Not to mention the fact that his whole plan was to waste away mostly unnoticed and yet he somehow gets dragged into the biggest drama of the decade and repeatedly puts himself in harms way to save the kid! And he planned on passing over the legacy of his sect to him! His relationship with Gu Xiang is less intense, but if I had to describe how they act it’s a constant back and forth, he annoys teases her and she gets all frustrated. She spends the first couple episodes literally thinking he’s a weird old man, cause their whole relationship is just like that. He’s also much more sympathetic to Cao Weining’s continuous courting struggle though that’s not to say he doesn’t pull a fast one or few on him.

3, Zhou Zishu: former assassin who literally just wanted to drink himself to death in peace but then in the span of like 2 day he suddenly obtained 2 kids and a husband(stalker)???? poor man Did Not want this and proceeds to spend the next few weeks/months in denial about it before finally coming to terms with the fact that he cares about all of them (not that he's gonna tell them that) and then he gets a son-in-law too??? the universe really refused to let him die alone and miserable and decided to drop and entire family on him out of nowhere

4, Both: “Submitting as a couple for maximum kid coverage. Also I saw that you already got show versions, so: this propaganda might sound contradictory to what you've got, but that's just because they changed stuff for the show.

In a vaguely chronological order: when Wen Kexing is about 12-13, living in a sort of no-laws land for people exiled from normal society, he picks up an orphaned infant girl, Gu Xiang, and decides to raise her (which btw to this day drives me severely insane because. he was just a kid! he was barely keeping himself safe!! he gave her a childhood he himself couldnt have!!!). Elsewhere, Zhou Zishu, also a teen at the time, gets saddled with looking after this kid, Liang Jiuxiao, by his shifu/teacher. Both Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu act as a sort of parent/older brother figure to their respective kids. (Wen Kexing even puts it this way to someone, saying "we grew up together, so I'm a bit like her brother, but I also brought her up, so I'm a bit like her father too".)

Much later, when both Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing are in late twenties, they happen to run into each other. At this point, Liang Jiuxiao died in war a few years prior, but Zhou Zishu gets handed another kid - Zhang Chengling, a very recently orphaned 14yo. Zishu originally maintains that he's only helping the kid get to his extended family (kid's father's friend who's supposed to be like an uncle to him), but everyone gets attached. Zhang Chengling decides to become Zhou Zishu's disciple no matter what; Zishu is kind of seeing Jiuxiao in him, but also himself - because of how everyone is pressuring Chengling into taking responsibility for restoring his family's name/school while he is just a kid, when Zhou Zishu himself was only 15 when he had to take over his own school/organization because his shifu died - and Zishu is only now realizing this was maybe a lil bit non-ideal; Wen Kexing also partially sees himself... though a large part is also him just vibing with how much he, Zishu, and Chengling look like a nice lil' family together (he and Zishu are actually villain4villain but they rp normalcy so hard Chengling actually grows up well-adjusted); Gu Xiang and Chengling also develop a friendship.

So eventually Zhou Zishu goes "fuck it" and takes Chengling away, and he and Wen Kexing raise him together. They have a nice family vacation in the middle of the book and everything. The new year chapter is just *chefs kiss*

Zhou Zishu also looks out for Gu Xiang, and gives her some good advise. She doesn't spend as much time with the family because she's an adult at the time of the novel (by setting's standards) and is doing her own things, but Zishu clearly does take her as one of his own too.

The last two are not as clearly adopted but I figure I should mention them for completion's sake.

Cao Weining is a guy WenZhou run into on their travels, who they find a little silly but endearing. (the guy learned gay ppl exist and became an ally within like one conversation XD) He later falls in love with Gu Xiang, and she reciprocates after a while, so he is more son-in-law than outright adoptee - but at this point whos counting, hes also theirs in a way.

Meanwhile Gao Xiaolian is a girl whose dad was killed by the same people who killed Chengling's family, and she herself was kidnapped. Gu Xiang, Zhang Chengling, and Cao Weining rescue her and bring her to the family. She doesnt get a lot of interaction with WenZhou, but she becomes an important fourth member of no-braincells quartet with the rest of the 'children'. And she and Zhang Chengling also kill a guy together in a way that wasn't very honorable (deserved though), so clearly the influence of this particular found family is there 👍”

I had a dissertation written about Chis 'Clown'' Evans and his racist, pos gf Alba Baptista but fuck it. Y'all already know the tea. My issue with all this bullshit is how his PR/ CAA agency are gaslighting his fans. I'm not one of his biggest fans. I didn't really get into his acting roles until the fist Captain America film which I watched in 2020 for the first time. He did a PHENOMENAL job! Chris has talent, he's really great at stunts, he has the build of a super hero- everything seemed to align for him. Until he got a little too cocky (no pun intended).

He was rocking the Gray Man premieres/interviews. Breaking the internet with his looks and fans eating up all of his interviews. Then he dropped this... I'm laser-focused on finding a partner bullshit. You should have seen all the women on Twitter throwing themselves at him, of course, he never replied to any of them. We know he had his hands full (of shit).

SMA comes around and people are psyched because Chris Evans finally gets the title but... a little blurb about him dating then 25 y.o. Alba Baptista for over a year sends the internet and the fandom into a meltdown- let a lone they were breadcrumbing, her team and gargoyle friends trolling his fans; and to top it all off- here bffs are Nazi sympathizers, racists and fatphobes. Chris has too many pictures of him with Alba and sitting with that crusty booger Justin. I honestly am disgusted by Alba, Justin and Kiko; these assholes have the nerve to make fun of people's race and appearances when all three of them look like the witches in Hocus Pocus.

Justin gave a half-assed apology on Twitter but people could tell it was insincere. Kiko allegedly has an entire website dedicated to Neo-Nazism. You trying to tell me Alba doesn't share the views of her radioactive roach friends? The three of them are delulu. First of all, the Warrior Nun fandom really hyped Alba the fuck up like she was Zendeya of Selena Gomez. Alba isn't a good actress. I tried watching Warrior Nun and couldn't get through the first episode bc her acting so terrible. I read an interview where she said she never took acting lessons, that's the only thing I believed Alba hasn't lied about- her lack of acting lessons. Furthermore, for all the hype her pr tried to do for her, she's low rent. No, I don't think she's that pretty either- another lame wannabe starlet with fake tits who badly edits her Instagram photos.

Chris Evans is stupid. I can't put it any plainer than that. He prob got a bunch of nudes from Alba and he thought he hit the jackpot. I DO believe they were in a relationship but due to the long distance between them- I think they both idealized love, got caught up in the sex and confused it with actual love- which I don't think either one of them knows what real love is. I was team PR for a minute but then I saw how Chris and Alba interacted at the Ghosted premiere: They stepped out the car together, he said something to her and she laughed. That didn't convince me that they were in love but they're definitely fucking.

Again, Chris Evans is stupid. He took a two-bit Jennifer Lawrence wannabe and put her racist, delusional crazy ass on a pedestal and let those 3 ugly, pasty-face, racist, fatphobic, acne-riddled morons mess up his fan base. All because of what? Love?

New Scooby-Doo Mysteries 11-13 + End Thoughts 

Episode 11: Sherlock Doo

Monster: Ghost of Sherlock Holmes 

Interests: Fred is driving the Mystery Machine. In London for some Sherlock Mystery thing. (No Velma... which is odd since she was a big Sherlock fan.) Another weirdness where Sherlock is being treated as a real person, though so far this episode doesn’t present him as also fictional, just previous episodes. Scooby gets some fish and chips, Shaggy and Scooby eat em all. “Dog? Where?” Daphne tricks a guard into breaking them out of jail. Fred, Daphne, and Scrappy lock up their guard. They then go and  break Scooby and Shaggy out of jail. Gang breaks into a wax museum. Gang breaks into Buckingham Palace. Daphne, Fred, and Scrappy get caught, but Shaggy and Scooby manage to get away.  

Episode 12(a): A Scarey Duel with a Cartoon Ghoul

Monster: Monster Mutt

Interests: Going to see where they make Scrappy’s favorite cartoon, “Hero Hound”. Monster Mutt looks like a buffed bipedal DynoMutt. Ralph The Guard’s prototype appears in the character Dimwittie. (Frank Welker gave them the same voice) Scrappy makes a crappy cartoon during this episode. 

(Okay so I normally look at a wiki after watching a series to see if there is any interesting behind the scenes stuff or just stuff I missed. And well I thought I was just joking about Ralph The Guard, but apparently I wasn’t? Dimwittie was originally going to be called Ralph, but after the voice Frank Welker gave him his name was changed. Tom Rugger wrote this episode and he based Ralph The Guard on Dimwittie and Welker’s performance. So Welker didn’t so much give them same voice as he was told to do the same voice haha)

Episode 12(b): E*I*E*I*O

Monster: 30 Foot Tall Mouse

Interests: Old MacDonalds’s E.I.E.I.O. Experimental Institute for Evolutionary Improvement of Organisms. Scooby starts singing the song. Old MacDonald: ”I’m the director here at E.I.E.I.O. and on this farm we have a big mystery” Scooby eats a PB&J that grew on a tree. Milking woman singing Old MacDonald. Scooby saves the mouse and it turns on who was controlling it. Giant mouse is returned to normal and joins faux-gang 2.0 (never to be seen again *Unsolved Mysteries theme plays*)

Episode 13: The Nutcracker Scoob

Monster: Ghost of Christmas Never

Interests: Fred is here.  Christmas is here. Deck the Hall is song, but with members of the gang included: “Daphne dress likes Kris Kringle” “Freddie sings a yule time jingle” “Scrappy-Doo will juggle for us” “Shaggy puts the stage together” :Scooby-doo enjoys the weather”. Fred brought the gang to this orphanage. (While the episode title suggests nutcracker, it seems we are christmas carol) A cat that sounds very much like M.A.D. Cat is with the Scrooge like character, even looks like a solid grey version of M.A.D. Cat (... actually I think Frank Welker voiced M.A.D. Cat, and he probably voices this one too). I think I remember this episode too, like cartoon network used to have Christmas cartoon marathons. Gang is putting on a play of .. Christmas Carol, but Scrappy is dressed like a sugarplum fairy? Gang runs out of the orphanage, leaving the kids? or did the kids already leave? Shaggy and the dogs sing Santa Clause is coming to town. Sleigh that has the same color scheme as the Mystery Machine. The cook for the Scrooge-type speaks like Julia Child. Okay, so they are putting on both the Nutcracker Suite and Christmas Carol... or well they are putting on a condensed version of The Nutcracker. One of the kids saves Snowball and Scrooge-like starts melting, and finds the Christmas spirit.

End Thoughts: This series was... a little wild. Most episodes were good or decent, a couple not so much. A few episodes were good but also super WTF in what was going on, like the ghost alien one that felt like a D&D game. All in all an enjoyable series. It was cool to have Velma and Fred back, but wish they were around for the whole thing instead of three episodes, and then a solo Velma and two solo Fred. 

Actually vaguely remembered one episode and remembered a good chunk of another, feels like it has been so long since I remembered something more than an intro.

it’s also, i think, kind of important after 12′s nightmare record with companions and the trauma that led from all that that the show chose to portray the Doctor having actual positive effects on those around her. From the doctor’s pov, they sowed nothing but destruction to the people they loved, it’s why she didn’t ask the fam to stick around and tried to leave fast so she’d not get attached. 

And while 13′s life has gone horribly wrong and her own trauma is messing with her interpersonal relationships, those said relationships Aren’t having catastrophically negative effects on her loved ones. Yaz may be mad at her, but Yaz is alive and well, is only lacking in contentment because she accidentally caught feelings, and Dan is healthy and alive as well, even despite his fight me complex and that he’s clearly not the favourite tardis lodger and knows it. 

Graham and Ryan survived and Thrived because of their time with 13. 

I’ve always thought that ascension of the cybermen was a direct book end to the ghost monument, aotc even openly references tgm in an effort to point at it and say ‘look over there’, which is why I’ve always thought that 13′s promise in tgp means a lot in context to the fam in the last 3 episodes of s12. 

She Promises to get them home safe. The S12 finale may be her losing in pretty much every other way she had to lose, but she kept them alive and got them home safe. She kept that promise. And 13′s companion trauma is Such a huge part of her as a person that I honestly class that one as a win for her, and i genuinely think she’d agree with me. She did not want to get them killed, we always forget that 13 lost a companion in her first episode, her first night of life and somebody is already dead because she appeared in her life. 

‘i will get you home safe’ is honestly what i think matters to 13 the most in life, and no matter how bad it gets for her or how awful what happens to her is I think the absolute linchpin of her as a character and her motivations will always call back to her not wanting to stand over the body of one of them like she did Grace. 

In which case, it’s genuinely important that 13′s companions have done well and haven’t been ruined by association to her. Have even grown into happier and healthier people. Yaz is happier and more self assured and confident in herself by using wwtdd as a creed, and that’s important not just for her but for 13 as well. I know many saw that only as a bad omen, but i don’t actually think so, I think Yaz growing into a more happy and self confident person directly Because of the doctor being in her life is exactly the positive effect the doctor needs to see them have on another person. 

Yaz is happier. The doctor positively influences somebody. win win.

Mera! what was the anime that you watch back when you were still new in anime for only the characters, but when you decided to re watch it the story was actually fucked up 💀 mine was diabolik lovers (13 year old me was obsessed with shu 😭) brother conflict (...... i dont have comments in this) amnesia (the part where the dude lock the girl in the cage 💀) and danganronpa

Looking back on it now, little Mera watched all sorts of dark anime. ^^;;; I’ll put it under a cut because of potential spoilers for some of the anime discussed.

I also watched Diabolik Lovers (Kanato was my favorite) and Danganronpa. I remember feeling so depressed after what happened to Sakura. She was one of my favorite characters. I loved her friendship with Aoi. T_T I attempted to watch Brother’s Conflict, but I couldn’t get past the first episode because there were so many characters to keep up with.

I watched Watamote, which was dark in its own way. I felt terribly for Tomoko and how hard she tried to fit in. I remember feeling very satisfied with the ending, but it’s been so long since I’ve last seen it. I’ll have to watch it again to better appreciate the series and relive the nostalgia of watching it for the first time.

In my early teenage years, I watched Netflix’s Devilman Crybaby when it first came out. To this day, it’s one of my favorite anime. I rewatch it every year and each time it gives me pain, but it’s just so good.

This image is forever engraved in my mind. They really had me in the first half until I saw Akira’s lips were getting progressively dry. I also watched Japan Sinks in 2020 and that was another wave of pain and sadness. I’ve been meaning to rewatch it!

Black Butler was also really dark. Ciel makes a pact with a demon after being held captive by a cult (if I remember correctly) and he’s essentially a young boy trying to navigate adult society. Alois’s backstory was also really sad and dark. It seems no one can be happy in Black Butler. I haven’t caught up with the manga, but apparently Ciel has a twin!

Panty & Stocking wasn’t dark, but it was very explicit and it was an anime I had watched when I was first getting into anime. I probably shouldn’t have watched it at my age, but I thought the two main characters had really pretty designs and the art style was unique. Luckily, most of the sexual jokes went over my head. I just thought the premise of angels fighting demons and ghosts after getting kicked out of heaven was interesting lol.

There are probably other anime I haven’t mentioned yet, but those were a few I remembered. Amnesia has been on my to-watch list for years now. Maybe I should finally watch it soon?

Kym thank you for your wonderful answer to anon. I think a part of fadom freaks out easily because the reporter scared everyone for a lifetime. Last year we were all here celebrating how good for buck would have been having a friend outside of the 118, and we got a terrible friend then and an horrible gf now that basically monopolized 2 entire episodes of 5a, probably she'll be gone soon but her presence is still to much compared to others So yeah I don't think lucy will be a LI but who knows

Tay Kay is definitely scarring!! I'm gonna be upfront - I have never ever liked Taylor and I never saw her as a friend to Buck (idk how anyone could tbh but maybe thats just me!!), so I never joined in the celebrations of Buck having a friend outside of the 118 - I've only ever viewed her as a narrative device- her character has always been selfish and self serving and if the writers wanted me to feel differently about her they would have invested the time and effort into showing character growth - addressing all the bad choices she made previously. The fact that they didn't, and actually went the other way - showing how much of a hypocrite she is on top of everything else - spoke so loudly to me.

If, like me, you've spent years working in the industry, and studying how film and television is created and developed, I guess you spot things a mile off. I do think they wasted a lot of time and energy on giving her a back story and using it to fill time that could've been better spent elsewhere, but I'm also of the view that theres a very good chance that we'll see what we learnt coming back into play in the first part of 5b.

I think the writers have spent time creating that backstory for a reason - because it's what they've done historically and if it wasn't important they would've used the time elsewhere - showing us more of other characters and doing further world building. The entire season is planned out at the beginning - the arcs will have been decided- even beyond just the season - and they will have spent a lot of time figuring out how to get the characters from a to b - what needs to happen, what road blocks to put in their way etc.

That is why I'm sure that there are plans to make further use of what they have chosen to give us (and why ghost stories got such a drastic rewrite) and I expect it all to come into play in 5x11 and 13 with repercussions further into the season as well. Im actually looking forward to the summer hiatus so I can really look at how it all plays out in more detail - when we know where it all leads to - only then will we truly know if they short changed us and put in a load of unnecessary filler we could've done without!

For the most part the section of fandom that freaks out over this kind of thing tend to be young with little experience of the real world who will (hopefully) learn as they get older - I don't tend to see to much of it in my little corner of the internet as I curate my experience - I'm here for a good time, to have fun and for healthy debate, Im not here to stress myself out or make myself miserable. Its also easy to forget that many of these people freaking out have grown up in a world which has always had internet and so they are not used to being made to wait for things in the same way as those o us who existed before the world was at our fingertips - when binge watching was only possible if you recorded each episode every week or bought the vhs/dvd box sets!

“Charlie!” you call. Your voice echoes through your apartment. “Can you come here for a second?”

You need help zipping your dress. Charlie was the first to get to your apartment. He’s been waiting for Owen, Madison, Jeremy, Jadah, and Savannah, and Sacha to get here so your group can go to the release party together. It’s a formal event so you had to wear a dress and heels. It wasn’t your first choice, especially the heels part.

Charlie appears in the doorway and says, “Yea- woah.” You see him in your mirror. His eyes are on you. He looks good in his suit that he’s wearing. His jacket and pants are black, his button-up beneath the jacket is white, but he wears a silver tie to compliment the color of your pale pink dress since he can’t match your dress.

A smile forms on your lips and you ask, “Can you come zip up my dress, please?” Charlie nods and walks into your bedroom. You watch him as he slowly zips up your dress.

The dress is a long, baby pink dress with satin fabric. The skirt is a little poofy from the waist down. The top hugs your chest, pushing your breasts up a little bit so they look a little bigger than they actually are. A sparkly silver belt sits on your waist to add some sparkle to the dress. The sleeves are off your shoulders, and there are hidden pockets in the skirt.

Your boyfriend admires you in the mirror. You’re fully dressed now. Your hair is loosely curled and you have a natural makeup look painted on your face. The light color of the dress compliments your tan skin.

“You look stunning, mon amour,” Charlie sighs. “Absolutely stunning.”

You lean your head back a bit, resting it against Charlie’s shoulder. “You clean up very nicely, Charlie,” you say. “I like that you matched me without actually matching me.”

He laughs and says, “I might’ve had Mads and Jadah help me with that little detail. I wanted to match you but it would draw suspicion to us.”

When you and Charlie started dating almost nine months ago, both of you agreed to keep it on the very low. No social media posts unless hanging out in a group setting, no tagging each other in stories if you were alone together, and only going as far as following each other on social media since you’ve worked on the same show together. The fans don’t even know that you’re friends with each other at this point. Only your closest friends that are going with you to the event tonight know that you and Charlie are together.

Kenny Ortega also knows since he’s technically your boss and you’re both co-workers. He also might have found you making out with Charlie after the two of you got carried away when cuddling on Julie’s bed after a few hours of shooting scenes. You couldn’t lie to him after that.

Tonight is a very public event. Pictures will be taken, journalists will be wanting every juicy detail, and fans have been invited to the event so if there’s even a little be of suspicion, it won’t take very long to go public. It’s the release night party for Julie and the Phantoms season two. Everyone’s been invited to watch the first few episodes of the new season.

You feel Charlie kiss your bare shoulder and you giggle softly. “I’m sure everyone will be getting here soon so we should go wait out in the living room,” you tell your boyfriend.

“I wish I was able to touch you tonight,” he says. “It’s your big Netflix debut, Y/N. I wish I was able to hug you and show you how proud I am of you.”

A little sigh leaves your body and you say, “You can hug me. I’m sure a friendly hug won’t hurt, as long as you hug other people too. As for showing me that you’re proud of me, you can do that later when we’re alone.” You send him a playful wink so he gets what you mean.

Charlie’s jaw drops and he blinks at you. “I-you, um,” your boyfriend stammers. “Okay, yeah. I’m going to show you just how proud I am of you later, baby.”

You turn and face Charlie. “I look forward to it, Charlie,” you tell him, leaning up. He smiles and lightly pecks your lips.

Someone knocks on the door and you click out of the room in your silver heels to answer the door. Owen and Jeremy stand at the door. Jer’s wife, Carolynn, stands beside him.

“Hi, Y/N,” Owen greets you. “You look very pretty. I saw Charlie’s car in the parking garage so where is that loser?”

You laugh and say, “Probably still in my bedroom. Go get him. I think I shocked him or something with my words.” Owen pushes past you. Jeremy follows him, leaving you and Carolynn alone.

Carolynn smiles and says, “I love that color on you, Y/N. It suits you.”

“Thank you,” you say, shooting her a little smile. You’ve grown close to Carolynn since she’s married to Jeremy and you’ve spent a lot of time hanging out with the guys in a group.

You let Carolynn walk in before closing the door behind her. Faintly, you hear Owen say, “Bro, what’s going on with you? Your face is red.”

Charlie responds with, “I am so having sex tonight, dude.”

Both you and Carolynn laugh in the living room as Carolynn asks, “I don’t want to know what that’s about, do I?”

As you sit, you say, “Charlie said he wishes he could touch me tonight at the party so he could show me how proud he was of me. I told him he can show me how proud he is of me later when we’re alone.”

Carolynn says, “Ah, okay. That makes sense. Congratulations, by the way. Making your big Netflix debut tonight. How’s it feel?”

“I’m excited, but very nervous,” you admit. “The first season did so well and won so many awards that I’m scared that I’m going to come in and ruin the whole show and that people won’t like my character.”

She says, “You play the nice daughter of the villain of the show. Everyone will probably love you when they realize that your character wants to help the Phantoms instead of siding with Caleb. Don’t tell Jer and the guys but I think you have one of the best songs of the season so I think the fans will definitely love that.”

You smile as there is another knock on the door. Charlie, Owen, and Jeremy come into the living room as you answer the door.

Savannah stands in the doorway with Mads, Sacha, and Jadah. “I had to pick up the kiddos,” Sav says. “Ooh, Y/N. You look beautiful.”

“Thank you,” you say, smiling. “We’re just waiting for the limo to get here. I think we have a half hour or so before it gets here.”

Kenny is sending a limo to your apartment for the nine of you. When you decided to go as a group so you and Charlie could go together, Kenny pitched in and helped like the wonderful human being he is.

Owen decides to go live with Jeremy on his Instagram account for a few minutes. Carolynn talks with Savannah, Sacha, and Jadah while you find yourself talking with Charlie and Madison.

Mads says, “Kenny is giving us the opportunity to sing on stage together tonight. He told me that we can pick whatever song from either season. He thinks the fans would want to hear Perfect Harmony or Stand Tall since those were massive after season one dropped.”

Charlie nods and says, “Stand Tall would be good since all of us can get in on that number. I can talk to Jeremy and Owen about it when they get off live.”

You smile at the two of them and say, “That’s exciting. The fans will be so excited for this little surprise.”

“We can thank Kenny when it goes really well,” Mads says with a laugh. “He’s always got these great ideas. I don’t know how he comes up with them.”

Both you and Charlie laugh as your phone rings. You answer it, speaking to the limo driver. After a moment, you hang up the phone and announce, “Limo is here. Let’s head on out.”

Everyone gets their things together, Owen gets off Instagram live, and you all head down two floors to pile into the limo.

The drive from your apartment to the Laglyan Complex on North Vine Street is close to forty minutes. It was close to six when you left and it’s almost seven when you arrive to the venue for tonight’s event.

There is a red carpet laid out across the front of the building to the door. There is a lot of press here and a lot of cameras flashing. Cheyenne Jackson and Booboo Stewart are together on the carpet. You spot Kenny with one of the assistant directors.

When the press spots the limo, they begin to mumble to each other as they try to figure out who is in the car. Owen and Jeremy get out first. The press begin to snap pictures of the guys. Madison gets out with Jadah. Carolynn, Sacha, and Savannah. Sacha pairs up with Savannah while Mads, Jadah and Carolynn walk the carpet together until Carolynn finds her way to her husband.

Charlie helps you out of the car. The journalists call Charlie’s name as you close the door behind you. “Go,” you order him. “I’ll be okay. You’re the star of the show.” He smiles and sends you a wink since his back is turned toward the cameras. He walks off and your eyes follow him. Cheyenne walks over.

“Look at you, Y/N,” he says. “You look wonderful.”

You smile and say, “Thank you, Cheyenne. You look nice tonight. I love the suit.” He wears a shirt similar to his Julie and the Phantoms character, Caleb Covington. You play his daughter on the show.

Cheyenne holds his arm out for you and you hook your elbow with his. The cameras snap away at you and Cheyenne since the two of you play a father-daughter duo. Booboo comes and joins you and Cheyenne as the ‘Hollywood Ghost Club Crew’, as Booboo dubbed the three of you. The band is getting pictures together. Savannah, Sacha, and Jadah are getting their pictures taken together. Carolynn is getting her pictures done.

The journalists call out questions to the cast. They ask Madi which season was her favorite, which she replies with, “Y’all really going to make me choose? I can’t do that.”

Owen is asked whether or not we’ll get a Willex kiss in the future, which Owen replies with, “We’ll just have to see, won’t we?”

All the journalists laugh. One of them calls out, “Y/N, what was it like joining a show that already had a pretty large fan base and a successful first season?”

“It was nerve wracking at first,” you admit. “But the cast welcomed me with open arms and I’ve made some very, very close friends.” You shoot a smile to the cameras.

A second journalist calls out to everyone, “Are there any secret romances on set that no one knows about?”

Most of the cast, including you and Charlie, laughs. Owen answers with, “Now it wouldn’t be a secret if we told everyone. But no, there aren’t any secret romances. That I know of at least.”

After a few more pictures and questions, we all head inside. The main room as a bunch of tables set up and a little stage with Madi’s piano, Charlie’s guitars, Jeremy’s bass, and Owen’s drums. There are a few fans that were exclusively invited that are scattered around. They start getting excited when they see you walk in with everyone.

You find your table. You’re sitting with Owen, Charlie, Jeremy, Carolynn, Cheyenne, Booboo, and Savannah. This is the “adult” table, you guess. Mads, Jadah, and Sacha sit with Kenny and a few of the younger cast members at another table.

You’re sitting between Charlie and Owen. Someone needs to sit between them or they’ll be at each other all night. That’s your argument if someone is suspicious of you and Charlie.

Suddenly, you feel someone’s fingers lace with yours under the cloth that’s on the table. You glance over at Charlie and he has a little smile on his face as he talks with Jeremy. You turn and say to Owen softly, “Did Charlie really say that he’s having sex tonight?”

Owen laughs a bit and nods. “He thinks he is anyway,” the blond says. “Is he?”

“If he can behave himself then yes,” you say. Owen chuckles.

You feel Charlie squeeze your hand. You know he heard so you smile.

After small conversation with everyone at the table, you get up and get a drink. You walk to the bar, asking for a martini. While you wait, you’re approached by a guy dressed in a nice button-up shirt and dress pants. His hair is in a neat bun behind his head. “Hi,” he says. “I’m Austin.”

“Y/N,” you say.

“I couldn’t notice you came over here alone,” he says.

The bartender gives you your drink and you say, “I just came over to grab a drink. I was going to go back to my table after I grabbed it.”

Austin pulls out his wallet and hands the bartender a twenty dollar bill. “Let me at least pay for it,” he says.

You smile a bit and say, “Thank you. I must be headed back to the table with my friends now. I appreciate the drink, though.”

He blocks your way and you look up at him. “How about a dance in return for the drink?” Austin suggests.

Feeling more and more uncomfortable, you say, “Maybe later. I need to get back to my friends.”

Austin asks, “What’s the rush? It’s not like you have a boyfriend or anything. I follow your social media accounts and you never post a guy.”

You begin to say, “Actually, I-” before Charlie walks up. You let out a soft sigh of relief.

“Everything okay here?” Charlie asks. “You were taking a while to come get a drink so I thought that I’d come check.”

The stranger says, “All good here. I was just offering Y/N a dance here since I paid for her drink.”

Charlie looks down at you and blinks before you say, “I didn’t ask him to pay for it. He took out a twenty and offered.” Austin looks between you and your secret boyfriend.

Then Charlie says, “If you offered yourself then Y/N isn’t obligated to dance with you just because you paid for her drink.”

Austin says, “Well, I’ll just ask again later.” The man walks away and you let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding.

Your boyfriend moves and stands in front of you. He asks, “Are you okay?”

You nod and say, “Yeah, thank you. It was just uncomfortable. I didn’t know how to get out of it.”

Charlie reaches up to cup your face in his hands but he stops before he can touch your face. You look up at him before you lean forward, putting your face in Charlie’s hands. Your eyes flutter closed and you smile.

“Y/N,” Charlie says. “People are looking.”

With a sigh, you say, “I just need you to touch me, Charlie. I want you.”

He runs his thumbs over your cheekbones and you can hear pictures being taken. You put your drink on the bar counter and step closer to Charlie.

Your eyes open and you find Charlie looking down at you. He says, “You know what this means for us, right?”

You nod and say, “Our on-the-low relationship isn’t as on the low now. I don’t mind that anymore because I’m tired of guys coming up and trying to flirt with me while I have a boyfriend.”

Charlie chuckles a bit as he says, “I hope that means I can kiss you now. It’s all I’ve wanted to do tonight.”

“Yeah,” you sigh.

With no hesitation, Charlie leans down and crashes his lips to yours. You press your body against his, grabbing his jacket and holding him close to you. You kiss Charlie back just as hard as he kissed you. Your eyes are closed again but you can see flashes behind your eyes. You pull back from the kiss and stare up at Charlie.

Both of you smile at each other as Charlie says, “You better be ready for what happens after this.”

You push Charlie’s hair away form his face and say, “What happens after this is you get on that stage tonight, you kill it, we go back to your place because it’s closer, and you get all the sex you want.”

Charlie’s face turns a little red and he says, “I will never get used to you saying something sexual to me. I hope you know that.”

“You better, Mr. Gillespie,” you tell him. “I’m not the innocent girl that you met a year and a half ago.”

He laughs and says, “Trust me. I know you’re not the innocent girl that I met last year. You’ve proven that several times at this point.”

With a smile on your face, you take Charlie’s hand in yours before grabbing your drink and walking back to the table with your friends. When you get back to the table, you scoot closer to Charlie and rest your head on his shoulder. Owen looks over and says, “Woah, being affectionate in public. This isn’t the best idea.”

You say, “It’s okay, Owen. Everything is okay.”

Owen looks confused as you look up at Charlie. Charlie looks at his best friend and says, “I kissed her. At the the bar when I went to check on her. Cameras saw so that’s going to be a huge thing in the morning.”

Jeremy says, “Well, congratulations on making your relationship public, I guess.”

The table laughs. Owen looks at you, Charlie, Jeremy, and Carolynn before he says, “I need a relationship. I feel so single right now.”

Charlie says, “You’d actually have to talk to people to get a girlfriend, Owen.”

“Haha,” Owen says, sticking his tongue out at Charlie. You laugh.

At nine, Madi, Charlie, Owen, and Jeremy all leave to get ready. They decided on Stand Tall for the number they’re going to perform. It’s almost 9:30 when Kenny gets on the mic on stage. “Hello, everyone,” he says. “Today, Netflix released season two of Julie and the Phantoms. To celebrate, I offered our band the chance to perform a song of their choice. So, let’s all welcome Madison Reyes, Charlie Gillespie, Jeremy Shada, and Owen Patrick Joyner to the stage for their performance of whatever song they chose.”

The crowd cheers as everyone walks onto the stage, taking their place. You and Carolynn get a front row seat while you both watch your guys perform. You notice Charlie took off his jacket and his tie. He also cut off the sleeves, but that doesn’t surprise you. The top few buttons of his white button-up are unbuttoned, showing off his chest a bit.

Mads begins to play the first few keys to the song.

You smile and watch Madi sing. She’s insanely talented and you’re so glad that the world was able to hear her voice.

The guys nod their heads to the beat while they wait for their signal to begin playing. Once they get their cues, they begin to play one by one.

Charlie plays like he’s flickering on and off stage like he does on the show. You smile and admire your boyfriend. You know how talented he is, especially those fingers of his, but he never ceases to amaze you how talented he is.

You smile wide when Charlie sings his line at the end of the pre-chorus. Then he begins to sing his part of the song and you dance with Carolynn. The crowd sings and dances behind you two.

The four of them finish the song and smile. The crowd cheers and you smile, looking at Charlie. He has the biggest smile on his face, which is covered in a layer of sweat. His hair is damp with sweat too. Charlie bows with his closest friends before putting his guitar on the stand. He jumps off the stage and comes over to you.

“I told you that you’d kill it,” you tell him when he gets to you.

Charlie laughs and says, “Oh, hush.” He pulls you into a soft kiss. You smile and kiss him back, making your relationship with him completely public. The people around you cheer a bit as Charlie pulls away.

You look up at him and say, “You’re going to have so much fun being able to hugs me and kiss me in public now, aren’t you?”

He smiles and stares down at you. Charlie says, “Maybe I’ll be having too much fun now.”

As you brush some of the hair away from Charlie’s eyes, you say, “Please try to keep the PDA to a minimum, Charlie. You do have a lot of younger fans. Save most of it for when we’re alone.”

“Like how we will be tonight?” Charlie asks, eyes hopeful.

You laugh and say, “Just like how we will be tonight.” Then an idea pops into your idea. “This dress is getting really hot. I might need to take it off soon.”

Charlie gets what you’re trying to say so he replies with, “Let’s go.”

He takes your hand and hops over the barricade. You smile as he leads you through the crowd of people. Charlie calls you an Uber so you can both go back to his place tonight.

Ghost Game Review: Episode 17

Icy Hell

Kiyoshiro invites the rest of the group along to his routine check of a geothermal powerplant he helped develop. However, the plant is attacked, eventually trapping all but Ruli inside.

It really feels like this show has hit its stride since episode 13, but maybe that’s just me. We probably spent a little too much time running around the geothermal plant without much being gained for it, but the rest of the episode was so interesting I can’t say I mind too much. I also loved the little call-back when Ruli almost gave the boys away by calling Hiro, but decided not to. Really nice touch!

Also, for a moment I thought this was going to turn into a critique on global warming, but it was just about Spring! A little bit of a shame, but that probably would’ve been a bit heavy to bring up in the closing minutes of the episode.

Characters

Firstly, I want to take a moment to appreciate how these guys socialise and work together. I think this is the first series of Digimon I’ve watched where they all seem like genuine friends who like hanging out with each other, but also have interests and friends (so far) not tied to the main plot that we get a glimpse of. There’s something refreshing about celebrating friends who share certain interests but don’t have everything in common.

Well, guess we finally have an answer for how Kiyoshiro can afford so much. I’m guessing because he doesn’t go to class he can work on these kinds of projects during the school day. While it may feel unrealistic to have a 14-year-old genius, I like how it’s clear Jellymon, Hiro, Ruli and the others are the first friends he’s had around his own age, or at least the first for some time. We saw in the first episode he struggles to interact with peers, but he is also putting in effort to make connections. We saw it before when he invited the group to his conference in episode 14, but with this episode it feels like a pattern. Although it’s played as a joke that he invites them along out of fear of being alone, it seems much more likely he’s inviting them because he genuinely wants them to be a part of his life. After all, I’m sure he’s gone to conferences, etc before the series start. Also, I didn’t expect him to call Ruli “Tsukiyono-san,” especially when she’s younger. Wonder if he’ll call her something more familiar by the end of the series?

I don’t think I can do justice to Hiro’s character as well as the other two, but it was so nice seeing how genuinely impressed he was at the geothermal powerplant. We’ve seen him in the big brother role for so much of the series, I think it’s easy to forget he’s only 13 and had a completely different life before his father disappeared and Gammamon showed up. I realise being laid-back and a bit passive is part of his character, but I also hope we get to see more of him being fascinated by the world around him. After all, the Digital World clearly interests him in some way.

I think this is the first time one of the partners has devolved before the end of the battle? It explains a bit why BetelGammamon didn’t help keep Hiro warm with his fire – he didn’t even have the energy to even keep himself warm! Angoramon was cute in this episode, doing his best to keep Hiro and Kiyoshiro safe while worrying for Ruli.

I know TeslaJellymon is one of my favourites so I’m a bit biased, but she was great in this episode. I really like that she can be a bit oblivious to others, although it’s not malicious. She’s genuinely scared for Kiyoshiro and the others when she goes out to face Frozomon and the way she tries to reassure Ruli is very sweet. I’m also really glad that all the building up of their friendship (seriously, how many reviews did I mention how much I liked their dynamic?) has paid off this episode. Between the music and the voice acting, the fight scene with Ruli and TeslaJellymon was really moving!

Setting aside the girl-able-to-run-in-heels-trope (and on ice, ugh!) Ruli was my favourite of this episode. She’s upfront with her disinterest in the plant, but also doesn’t just stand around complaining about it. I really admire that she’s so confident to just go off and do her own thing, partially because it’s something I wish I was better at. Once she realises she can’t get to the others, Ruli tries to wait it out, although her worry gets the best of her. Her genuine concern really sells the fight with Frozomon. When the insert music started up, I actually started to think we’d maybe even get an evolution (I’m glad we didn’t, the powering up of TeslaJellymon’s attacks felt right to me).

It would be easy after this episode to ask why Jellymon isn’t Ruli’s partner and Angoramon isn’t Kiyoshiro’s, but I think that shows the difference between friends that we get along and have fun with, and those that make us better people. Ruli-Jellymon feels like the former, while Ruli-Angoramon and Kiyoshiro-Jellymon fit into the latter group, which is why they’re partners. However, I hope that we see more bonding between the digimon and humans outside of their partnerships.

Worldbuilding/Plot

Ruli helping to power up TeslaJellymon’s attacks opens up a lot of possibilities. Can anyone with a V-Bracelet power up any digimon? Does one even need a V-Bracelet? Or is Ruli the only one who can power up the others’ attacks due to her personality, similar to how Hiro’s encouragement of Gammamon has given him four Adult/Champion forms? I like all the possibilities and given how the series writers have handled this kind of stuff so far, I doubt this will be the only time we see this happening.

I’m also a little interested by this. We’ve seen these digital markings come up in the past, but normally when digimon are interacting with objects in our world. It’s only a guess, but I think it was the snow that caused them to appear. Anyway, a small but interesting detail.

Finally Nya's season! Our queen, our water goddess, our amazing girl gets what she deserves! 😍😍😍

What I know about the season beforehand is that Nya's powers apparently are getting problematic for some reasons? Which is a pretty common topic in other shows but it's a first in Ninjago, usually the elemental powers don't have focus and I LOVE that we now get to see stuff like that 💕💕💕

I know there should be Wojira involved, trusting The Island to deliver that little foreshadowing at the end of the episode 🤷‍♀️ Also Maya is back... MAYA IS FINALLY BACK AFTER SEVEN SEASONS YES!!! 😭😭😭

I have nothing else to say, I have no idea what this will bring, hopefully something as good as Master of the Mountain! 🖤

Warning reader, I might be fangirling to an extreme because I love mah girl Nya and I've been wanting Kai and Nya's parents to be back ever since Hands of Time ended. So yeah... screaming alert 😅

At this point I don't doubt that the intro is great, we reached such a level of animation and we got The Fold 😍😍 Love the marine vibe and how it's similar to The Island, because it's a great intro 👌

NOW I like the writing! Maybe they rushed the dialogue's quality for The Island to get here? It's just fun and in character, maybe it's just me but I'm enjoying it a lot for now

How many episodes are in this? Wiki says ten, then I checked again and it's sixteen like with Master of Mountain... eh, it looks good so far so it's fine whatever happens 🤷‍♀️

A Guide to the Ringu/Ring Films

This one was very hard to put together as there is just so much Ring content out there, so hopefully I’ve got everything here, and if not, I’m sure this guide will have to be updated later on anyway!

A Quick Introduction

Ringu/Ring is a series that centers around Sadako Yamamura (aka Samara Morgan & Park Eun-suh) and a cursed video that causes all who watch it to die within seven days (or in one version, two days). Sadako’s backstory varies from entry to entry in the franchise, but it is generally portrayed that she had some sort of psychic powers before she died, partially leading to how the curse works.

Ring originally started out as a series of novels written by Koji Suzuki before it was adapted as a tv movie in 1995, then followed up by an actual theatrical movie in 1998.

The Japanese Ring Films

As stated, the first actual Ring movie is a 1995 tv movie.

Ring: Kanzenban (1995)

This adaptation follows the original story of the novel, so there’s many differences to the version that we know now, but Sadako is still a part of the story. It’s certainly worth a watch if you’re interested in the novels.

Now this is where things become a bit more confusing. At some point with the Japanese films they sort of split into four categories: the ones that follow director Hideo Nakata’s timeline, the ones that follow the book timeline, the ones that follow both timelines, and the versus films.

Ring (1998)

Ring 0: Birthday (2000)

Ring/Ringu is obviously the movie we know today, that is very beloved. While it partially follows the books, it also has Hideo Nakata’s personal touches to it, that you’ll sort of see no matter what timeline you look at. Ring 0, however, is an origin story, and gives you a look into Sadako’s life before she died while she was a part of a theater troupe. It’s extremely tragic, and one of my personal favorites.

As implied, these two movies follow Hideo Nakata’s storyline, and are also two other movies in the franchise directed by him. Would recommend these two if you want to see a continuation of the story from the characters in the first film.

Sadako 3D (2012)

Sadako 3D 2 (2013)

So here’s the interesting thing about Spiral/Rasen, it was actually released at the exact same time as the original 1998 movie. However, there ended up being much more interest in Ring rather than Spiral, so it quickly flopped upon release and is why we saw another sequel to Ring come out the next year. Though there was certainly some interest in it, as the Sadako 3D movies were released in 2012 and 2013. While these follow different characters, they still have ties back to the ones from Spiral, and follow the books to some extent.

Basically, a bunch of movies portraying Sadako fighting other ghosts from Japanese/Chinese media. Each one is vastly different, but definitely fun if you’re into seeing that sort of thing! Note: at this time I am unable to find a translated version of the first Bunshinsaba vs Sadako movie, however, it won’t be an issue to watch the second as I was able to watch it easily without knowing the plot of the first (if you can find a translated version though, feel free to inform me!) Note: the Bunshinsaba vs Sadako films are actually Chinese movies, but since i was covering the vs films here, I felt it’d be best to just add it rather than making a whole different category.

The TV Series

Ring: The Final Chapter (1999)

Rasen (1999)

The last bit of Ring media we have to cover in Japan, Ring actually got a tv series with two seasons, one with 12 episodes and the other with 13 - the episodes running about 45 minutes each. Though I have not seen it yet so I can’t give great detail, it’s said to loosely be based off the novel along with the 1998 Ring film.

The Ring Virus Film

A quick extra stop before we get to the American films, The Ring Virus (1999) is a South Korean remake of both the 1998 Ring movie, but also Ring: Kanzenban to an extent as well. It borrows many elements from both, and instead of Sadako we have Park Eun-suh as our cursed ghost this time. While I wouldn’t say it adds really anything new to the series, still worth the watch if you want to see all of the Ring movies.

I don’t think much needs to be said here. The Ring was a very popular remake in America and is what is credited for starting the J-Horror remake phase over here. The popularity caused for two current sequels to be made, one even directed by Hideo Nakata himself (The Ring Two). Obviously it’s a much more Americanized version of the series, with Sadako this time being replaced with Samara Morgan, which unlike herself in both the Japanese and Korean films, is a child, which adds a lot to how Samara’s story is played out differently from Sadako’s.

-did. did tucker really just say esperanto was a dead language only spoken as a secret code between geeks. google says around 100,000 people actively speak it. oh my god...it being an auxiliary language doesn't mean its 'just for geeks to speak in code' ...it helps bridge gaps between people who don't have a language in common...

-danny really isn't pulling punches when it comes to fighting the ghost-cop possessed people huh. like he SLAMMED KWAN INTO THE CONCRETE SO HARD. HE THREW PAULINA INTO A BILLBOARD. will that...I mean it WOULD carry over to their bodies non-possessed, right? like if the ghost piloting their bodies gets hurt?? itd be so upsetting to be possessed, lose time, then wake up covered in bruises (and possibly, broken bones??) real horror movie stuff im sure wont be addressed in any way

-fright knight's murder castle reminds me of the booby trapped murder castle in zexal!! another supposedly 'for kids' show with murder/trap castles! we love that. if you are a dp fan reading this, give yugioh zexal a try. its also got 13-14 year old protags and involves (alien) ghosts. the cardgame is just a vessel for the plot, which is really good. (I just want more people to watch my fav yugioh, man)
