For the few Ballykissangel fans out there, and especially those who ship Assumpta Fitzgerald and Peter Clifford from BallyK, I’ve just posted the first chapter of my first Ballykissangel fanfic on FanFiction.Net. I’ll post another chapter in a few days and the final chapter next week. I hope you’ll enjoy my little story. Please read and review — I’m such a newbie to writing fanfiction, I would love to hear back from you as you read.

Despite the plethora of Catholic people in my life, my attitude towards religion is mostly summed up as ‘meh personally but you do you’. I also find the notion of priests and nuns being celibate to be outdated and pointless. Having said that, I don’t usually ship characters with clergy. However, there are a couple of exceptions. Eddie Diaz lusting after his wake-up call masquerading as hot priest is pushing for a spot on the very short list. The top spot being Assumpta Fitzgerald and Father Peter Clifford on Ballykissangel (curse the ending to that dalliance -IYKYK).

P.S.: Yes I know the obvious recent example is Fleabag but I never watched it (although, even I could sense their chemistry from online snippets).

Fic Writers Q & A

The post no one asked for but you’re getting anyway. (Anyone who wants to do this, feel free to C&P and fill in your own answers).

1. AO3 handle: SwissMiss

2. Ships I write: Currently, Johnlock. In the past, mainly Hermione/Severus (Harry Potter) and Assumpta/Peter (Ballykissangel). I have also written many other ships in the HP fandom, but I don’t think I wrote more than one fic for any of those other ones.

3. Ships I read: Johnlock, Gheorghe/Johnny (God’s Own Country). I also used to read a lot of Spock/Uhura from the reboot movies.

4. When I started writing: The first actual story I recall writing for pleasure, not for school, was in 6th grade, in the early 1980s. The first fan fiction I wrote was in 2000.

5. First fic I wrote: "Conspiracy Theory” for Ballykissangel.

6. Favorite fic I wrote: Probably “The Baker Street Nativity”

7. Hardest fic I wrote: Depends what is meant by hard, but “The Things I Do to You for the Things You Do to Me” was written for a 24-hour challenge and I had a really hard time getting it done. Which is also why it’s not very good.

8. Most research-intensive fic I wrote: Probably “The Case of the Vanishing Pants”, which has 5 mini-cases and each one needed some details researched for authenticitiy.

9. Fic that is most dear to me: “The Cuckoo’s Lullaby” because I put a lot in there about Switzerland and things that I’ve personally seen and done.

10. Favourite trope to write: Already in a relationship without knowing it / Friends to lovers.

11. Something I wouldn’t write: Major character death

12. Favourite scene I ever wrote: I can’t choose because my memory isn’t good enough to recall all the scenes in all of my fics.

13. Where I get my inspiration: From the chemistry and interactions of the canon characters. Also plots and scenarios from other movies, shows, and books.

14. Hardest scene I ever wrote: Same answer as 12.

15. Favourite characterisation I wrote: The Tristram Holmes POV in my Tristram Holmes AU series. I was trying hard to emulate the voice of another author’s character, and by all accounts it came out pretty well.

16. Sequel I would write, if I had the chance: It’s not about having a chance, but about having the interest and energy. I guess the stories of mine I’d personally like to see a sequel to would be Blind Date and The Way to a Man’s Heart.

17. Story I want to write, but I don’t think people would enjoy reading: I think anything that I would really want to write would also be enjoyed by others. By which I mean, I have pretty middle-of-the-road tastes in fic and generally write the kind of thing I want to read. And I know many other people’s taste in reading material matches mine in fandom.

18. A line from a WIP: Sherlock moved the computer onto the pillow at the head of the bed then backed off so he could stand at the foot, directly in line of the camera, and dropped the dressing gown onto the floor behind him. (From a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot crossover I started a couple of years ago, is fully plotted, and has about 12K written.)

19. A recent comment on a story that made me smile: All comments on my fics make me smile. :)

20. A discontinued work I would love to finish: I only actually discontinued (started posting then dropped it) one fic, in the HP fandom, and I have no interest in continuing it. I have lots of other half-written fics that will never see the light of day. I would love to finish anything, really.

21. Fic writers I admire: Anyone who completes a longfic, really, or has taken the step from fanfiction to mainstream publishing. But who comes to mind immediately: @silentauroriamthereal, @jbaillier, @earlgreytea68, @lorelei-lee, @khorazir, @splix71, @blueink3, and many many more who I’m amiss in not mentioning.

@kavan30013 I adore Ballykissangel and the Peter/Assumpta ship, but the way they ended their ship simultaneously makes my angst heart happy, and the part of me that longs for everyone to live happily ever after terribly sad 💔 It's still one of my fav shows even with that (it's still my Tumblr icon after all these years, so there's that 💖)

In light of some of your shows disappointing you, can you share your top five/ten moments of your fave idiots (from whatever fandom) being in love and actually admitting it?

This has been in my inbox for a century or so, partly because I am a terrible tumblrite (apologies) and partly because I didn't quite know what to do with this ask. To be perfectly honest, I don't have a top 5, let alone a top 10, of these sorts of instances. This is perhaps because I have a sadistic talent for choosing ships that never come good or perhaps this is because TV writers suck and they don't know when/how to write good resolution and healthy adult relationship.

I have literally had one ship (ONE!!) in all my days of shipping that came good. It was in a little Australian show called "Seachange" that ended PERFECTLY with Max and Laura finally finding love after both had had terrible heartbreak. This is them:

This show and ship ending the way it did was VERY important to me because it arrived right after s3 of "Ballykissangel" in which my fave character was literally (this is not a joke) electrocuted to death mere seconds after receiving a declaration of love from the man she loved. People are still recovering from the trauma inflicted by this "resolution".

For me, "Seachange" came along and initially I was really invested in Laura and Dan but then Dan LEFT and I was heartbroken! It was a real surprise when I found myself even more captivated by the second pairing this show set up. Ever since, it has stood in my mind as an example of ship done right. So of course, they had to reboot the show recently and break Laura and Max up. (I didn't watch).

My point is, the reason I can't invest too much in the idiocy of SVU/OC and the reason I was so quick to give up on "Ted Lasso" after the stupid "twist" with Rebecca's love life is just that I'm a jaded shipper who has been through this toooooo maaaaaany times. I'm looking for shows that just do better, do different. But look, I won't deny that there is fun in URST, there is. So in the spirit of your question, I will share my top 8 being totally in love and ALMOST admitting it or ALMOST getting away with admitting it before disaster strikes. (I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone that Keeley Hawes features heavily on this list)...

The first character I first fell in love with: Peter. Clifford. As soon as he got back into Assumpta’s van after comforting the mountainy man’s wife - his helpless expression - all I wanted to do was hug all his pain away <3 <3

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Assumpta Fitzgerald. Don’t get me wrong, I loved her in season 1. Nevertheless, as season 2 and 3 wore on, her multi-dimensional character warmed my heart and fueled my shipping to no end. Plus, her fate means that i will defend her to the ends of the earth.

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I don’t hate any characters (so far at least xD) If I have to say someone, maybe Father Aiden? I’ve only seen a few clips of his character but he seems out of place somehow.

The character I love that everyone else hates: Sean Dillon doesn’t seem too bad..? (Again, I’ve only seen a few clips xD) I don’t really love Jenny from s1, just kinda feel sorry for her :(

The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Not a character, but a character trait. Niamh’s haircut. Why!?!?!

The character I would totally smooch: Peter. Clifford. Always.

The character I’d want to be like: Assumpta Fitzgerald. She’s so ballsy and feisty but with the right person, opens up to be a beautiful flower that should always be treasured <3 (and kept away from all electrical wires)

The character I’d slap: He was a contender for the ‘character I love that everyone else hates’ but Leo makes this list instead ;) Like Jenny, I felt sympathetic toward him as he was left pining alone. However, that doesn’t condone the whole ‘BallyK is boring, BallyK’s not Dublin, Dublin’s the best thing since sliced bread’ thing. Compromise guy! 

A pairing that I love: Peter and Assumpta OTP <3 <3 <3

A pairing that I despise: That one time that Brian had a thing for his housekeeper xD Thought he was going to walk into the kitchen one day and spot her boiling cute little bunnies on the range. Ugh (You can tell a show’s good when you can’t name any actual ships that are bad <3)

Would you ship....Assumpta Fitzgerald with Marcus Kane?

OH GOD This is doing weird, weird things to my brain because in BallyK verse, I think I would actually be far more inclined to ship Marcus with bright, pure Peter?? And the image of those two cozying up in a little house in the Irish hills reading philosophical journals together on is just.... it’s a lot. But if you were to put Assumpta on the Ark... oh god, I would ship that to the grave. Her criticism of the Church would translate so beautifully to a fiery criticism of the Ark’s government.She runs a seedy little bar on one of the lower stations; she took it on after her father died, despite showing great promise in her schooling and being on track to join the Council. It was in that schooling that she originally met Marcus - hated him a little, considered him to be a bit too pretentious, but secretly enjoyed their frequent in-class spats and less-frequent philosophical sessions outside of class. Later in life, she got to bear witness to some of Marcus Kane’s lower moments. He would go to her bar for a drink (or several) and to be in the company of someone who he knew would be honest with him - whether that meant giving him the icy scolding he knew he needed, or, far rarer, earning a word of encouragement from her. It was her that he went to after Jake’s death; and after the Culling. Romantically, they might have spent the night together a handful of times; but it was never significant - not explicitly, anyway. They were both very intentional about keeping their heads on their shoulders. It wasn’t cold like it would have been with Callie, though - there was a real affection there, but also a deeper understanding of each other that allowed them to walk away from each other with comfortable independence. They knew where each other’s priorities lay. Even as Marcus’ fascination with Abby Griffin began to grow, Assumpta had enough genuine respect for both he and the Council’s Problem Child to not be wounded by it, or the fact that the Head of Medical was so much Marcus’ equal... not out loud, that is. If she’d made it to the ground, god knows how that might have changed... but.
