That said, don't forget about ff.net (even if only when Ao3 goes down) and don't forget about old authors. There is good stuff on ff.net. There are gems to be found amongst dusty ole stacks. Fanfiction archives are libraries. Don't expect an algorithm. Expect an adventure. Search. Experiment. And don't forget to tell old authors what you think. We're still out there. I still get random reviews (mostly on my SVU stuff) and it makes my day just as much now as it did in the past.

“Don’t look.” Julia’s words come out quickly, shoving him towards the bedroom of her flat, without offering anything else in return.  

He’s only been in her flat a mere thirty seconds, there to tell her about a threat, and how much time they are going to spend together. He does not even get the chance to get the words out as her arm tugs him towards the bedroom.  

David’s eyes narrow. “Ma’am.”  

“Don’t look.” The repeat of her words is effortless as she guides him to the room. “Sit.”  

David is good at following her commands, and he sits on the edge of her bed. He is not a stranger in her flat as he once was. He moves through it effortlessly these days. He is, however, still on duty as he watches her exit from the room, his eyes following her.  

He wants to know what she is up to. Julia likes her secrets. He does not believe this is a bad one, though. Not as he can hear the rummaging around the kitchen. He sits as still as he ever does, mind only upon her, nothing else happening in his life. He prefers it in such a way these days – Julia the answer to so much that is going on around them. 

Eyes flicker down to his watch. He’s been sitting there for ten minutes. He is patient, thankfully, but as the curiosity grows, the knot in his stomach tightens, almost a little fearful of where this is heading. His foot taps almost absently as he relaxes from being on her guard all the time. His orders say he is to be there for the remainder of the evening given a threat that has come through. He does not mention he was always going to be sitting in the room. If anything, he will be keeping a very close eye upon her.  

Another ten minutes pass. David tells himself to be still instead of investigating. There is no danger. The flat is thoroughly protected. The sounds are quieter now as he waits. His job has a lot of waiting involved. He looks down at his watch again. If she does not come back within five minutes, he is going to go out there. 

The door opens as soon as the thought comes to him. She has that soft smile on the edge of her lips as she moves towards where he is on the bed. She fits perfectly between his legs. Her hands go on his shoulders, a gentle touch, a tingling going through him as her touch always does, a fire lit in him without her even trying.  

“I know something,” she says, her hands moving to his neck, traveling down to his collarbone, until his tie is in her hand. She tugs at it gently, leaning down, pulling him towards her, lips brushing, “and I have a surprise.” Only when the words are out of her mouth does she seize his lips for a kiss that can only be described as passionate. He aches for more, hands moving to her hips, wanting to pull her atop of him, no longer caring what she’s been up to outside of the door to her bedroom.  

That does not happen when she abruptly pulls away. “Come.”  

A simple command is followed, no choice given as she tugs on his tie, and there are thoughts about that he keeps to himself. He stands and follows her through the door.  

He looks around, focusing on her, before his eyes fall on the table. An eyebrow raises but as a formerly married man he knows a date when he sees one.  

“It is your birthday.” A statement, her eyes studying him, before she moves closer to the table. “I thought we should celebrate.” 

He almost asks how she knows but he doesn’t bother. She has her ways of finding out information just as much as he has his ways of finding out information. “You didn’t have to do this.” 

“I know.” She looks over to him. “I wanted to.”  

His eyes focus on the table. There’s a nice dinner that he assumes is ordered given the lack of mess in the kitchen. There is wine on the table he most certainly should not be drinking given though he is on duty. The candles add a touch that is entirely Julia. He is perhaps most intrigued by the chocolate and strawberries he can see on the counter.  

They sit without much fuss between them.  

“Thank you.” He says quietly. His birthday is not something he fusses over much. With the birth of both of his kids his priorities changed dramatically. His mental state has no space for worrying about birthdays. That does not change how appreciative he is as he takes a bite of the haggis upon his plate.  

“Where did you get this?”  

“I know a place.”  

He smiles as he takes another bite. He lives mostly on takeout, cold pizza, and beer. That’s only when he bothers to eat anything at all, but it tastes as if it was something his mum could have made. Close, at least. It’s a gesture that is not lost on him. His eyes focus upon her more than he focuses upon the food that he clears off his plate.  

“You haven’t touched your wine.” 

“I’m on duty.” 

“Hmm.” She picks up her own glass and takes a sip. “You do many things on duty that I believe your superiors would question.”  

Her tone is a tease, so he grabs the glass without another word. He takes a sip. “I can’t argue with that.” There’s lots of things he cannot argue with.  

There is not much for the two of them to discuss. There is, really. He thinks of a million things he could say to her, but it’s not what he wants now. No talking of work given everything is even work. 

As they finish, she moves to the fridge and pulls out a small cake. He cannot resist the smile that comes upon his lips.  

“This is what I was working on when you came in.”  

“You didn’t want me to see.” 

“Not until I was done.” She places it down in front of him with a singular candle upon it.  

“You made this.” A statement as it looks homemade. She has never struck him as the domestic type. The image of her moving around the kitchen making a cake and then having to frost it only makes him smile. She even goes as far as to write his name on the cake, the edge topped with sliced strawberries. It smells intoxicating in a way only sugar can be.  

“Yes.” 

That does catch him by surprise as she lights it. “Chocolate?” 

“Of course.” She smiles. “Make a wish.” 

His eyes close as he thinks of something to wish for. It’s something simple. Something he refuses to think too much about as he blows the candle out. After all, he wants it to come true. It’s the most like himself he has felt in such a long time.  

“Happy birthday, David.” She whispers into his ear.  

“Thank you, Julia.”  

“Now onto your real gift.” She takes his hand and leads him into the bedroom. No option given. 

“What about the cake?” 

“Later.” A promise. “You will need your stamina.”

First of all, Nicky Parsons is NOT dead. In Jason Bourne we believe she is killed by a sniper in Athens, Greece but it is revealed during a live stunt stage show called The Bourne Stuntacular in Universal Studios she is alive, but underground.

The Bourne Stuntacular is a live stage stunt show that takes the audience into the world of Jason Bourne with an all new story and a very old friend. Nicky Parsons appears in The Bourne Stuntacular as the agent liaison, who worked for Andrea Dixon in Homeland Security, who briefs the guests on the mission they're about to see to warn the guests that she's afraid of Jason Bourne's latest mission, which may include rogue double agents and rouge goverment officials, and so she needs help making sure that's not the case. Nicky also defines her relationship with Jason Bourne as "complicated", during the debrief Nicky mentions that after she was shot in Athens, Greece; Jason Bourne believes that she's dead, when she is not, because she went underground into hiding in order to keep her distance to protect Jason by staying away from him.

She went underground to keep her distance...why would she need to keep her distance from him? Had she reached a point where she couldn't keep her distance emotionally? Nicky has always been super supportive of whatever Jason needs and she's never tried to push whatever relationship they had before he lost his memory, and I find that endearing but sad. Its obvious they had a close relationship of some kind compared to the other agents.

Would be nice if one of them at some point would come out and say what happened before it all started.

hi! i have absolutely no idea how tumblr works, so i am assuming this is tumblr's version of a DM? anyways, just wanted to say that i absolutely ADORE your writing. i read "Fugitive" on AO3 which led me to post your about why Julia and David were, in fact, very much in love. boy, was it a long one. still, whilst reading it, i couldn't help but be utterly in awe of your diction and writing style. i'm currently a student, but i hope that one day i'll be able to write with the same prowess as you!

Hey there, THANK YOU and I AM SORRY. I briefly turned into a "Doctor Who" blog as the 60th anniversary specials were airing. Just catching up now with all my other fandoms! Welcome to tumblr (which does have a messaging app) but this is totally fine (asks can be responded to publically or privately). I always love hearing that my stories are still being read and enjoyed. I briefly came out of self-imposed retirement to pen "Fugitive" and because I felt so strongly about the pairing, despite the fact that we got so little of them. What was there was so rich, hence the long meta post(s?) which is kinda my thing and I make no apologies for it. (I'm also a student (lit crit of course) and I have worked as a writing coach too. I always say that you never stop improving your writing and the best way to improve it is simply to WRITEWRITEWRITEWRITE). I wrote another long meta post about David and Julia but tumblr banned it (cos sex with the Home Secretary is a heinous crime apparently). 1. The Book of X by Sarah Rose Etter

Etter is quickly becoming a new favorite writer! Cassie is born with her abdomen twisted in a knot and her family owns a meat quarry. So weird & so good.

2. The Dumb House by John Burnside

One of my personal favorites. A man tries recreating an experiment to discover the origin of language. The narrator experiments on his own children. The story itself is so upsetting but the worst part is living in the mind of the narrator who feels NOTHING.

3. At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop

A small book that packs a huge punch. The story of a soldier’s descent into madness in the trenches while fighting in WWI.

4. Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield

Lesbians, deep sea horror, & the experience of grieving someone who is physically still with you

5. Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge

This audiobook was INSANE!! Have listened to it many times. Scifi book about different types of “beasts” that exist in the world. Told in different short stories. Think about this book often!!

6. My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell:

I don’t recommend this lightly. This one is hard to read & deeply uncomfortable. About the relationship between a 15 year old girl and her 45 year old teacher. Partly told from the perspective of 15 year old Vanessa & also from Vanessa when she’s 30. A reflection on trauma & the inability to let yourself believe you are a victim.

7. The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling:

Essentially Crimson Peak. Gothic horror & such a fun audiobook to listen to in the fall.

8. Rien Ne Va Plus by Margarita Karapanou:

This book is about a relationship ending & all the cruelty and pain that are involved. Told from the perspective of both people. Adored this!!

9. Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis:

This book was formative read for me as a teenager. A retelling of Psyche & Eros told from the perspective of an older sister. I related so hard to Orual the first time I read this :(
