Thinking about Matthias Nonius. Nonius as the one Gideon can never live up to. Nonius as Ortus’s ideal. Nonius as the Ninth’s last hero, what Harrow desperately needs to be. Nonius as the equal and rival of the Saint of Duty in all their forms. Nonius as the perfect cavalier; the one who fights for and obeys the Ninth out of unending duty, a millennium later. Nonius as what Harrow and Gideon and Ortus want to be, Nonius as the legend of the Ninth, Nonius as a poem, but never Nonius as a person. Nonius as a man entirely trapped by his own myth and memory and name. Nonius as Nonius, never Matthias, always and forever the Ninth. Nonius as a heap of bones forgotten long from home, free from the Ninth at last. Just. Just thinking about Matthias Nonius

Daniel taking more of a backseat during this session is, IMO, not only in deference to what is a highly traumatic memory for Louis, but also a calculated move on his part that speaks to the longer game he’s trying to play. He wants to take down Armand and remembering San Francisco just made it a real personal vendetta. But Armand can deflect Daniel’s blunt provocations (or at least suppress his reaction to them) pretty easily so that’s not going to work. Armand’s only weakness at this point in time is Louis. So it’s not only essential that Daniel stay on Louis’ good side, but also carefully nudge Louis to seeing the darker side to and duplicitous nature of Armand’s actions. This has already proven to work for him: at the end of episode 5, Daniel, in an uncharacteristically gentle tone, calmly led Louis to the conclusion he already reached about what (who) happened to both their memories. He’s indeed very careful all throughout the recollection of the trial to not be too flippant or interject too often. But when he does, outside of a few exceptions, he deliberately calls attention to Armand: his position in the narrative, the scope of his actions, emphasizing what he failed to do. It’s not quite enough to completely turn Louis against Armand, but seeds have been planted and I don’t believe it will take much more nudging from Daniel to send it all over the edge.

negan and maggie’s relationship is so. so fuckign fascinating to me. like. like…imagine teaming up with someone (repeatedly) who killed the love of your life and was also either directly or indirectly responsible for the death of your friends. imagine wanting nothing more than wanting to kill this person and feeling bitter and angry because your friends refuse to kill this person. you are so anguished over it that you leave with your son (whose father was murdered by this person), and then you come back, and all your friends seem to begrudgingly trust (or at least coexist) with this awful person. and this person is now trying to help you. he saves your life multiple times and also saves your son, the last living reminder of your murdered love. this person is asking to become the monster so you don’t have to. this person tells you that you need to come back. this person understands that you would kill him, and he might even let you. he lets you do the closest thing to killing him instead—he lets you turn him in, knife to his throat, and you’re leaving him, and your son won’t talk to you, and you come to the sudden realization that perhaps you need to go back for this monster. what the hell kind of dynamic is this
