actually y'know what i guess i'll talk about it while i'm here

i think about this scene a lot regarding him and (obviously) this episode in general, but especially when slinkman is like... actually a character that gets development and changes over the course of the show, it really does say a lot to me

and with the placement of scenes here, it's right in between lazlo, raj and clam getting slinkman to muster up the courage to show off his past aspirations, to give it another go, only to be reminded of how all that turned out, panic, and flee back to what's comfortable... aaand in between him finding out everything is actually lumpus' fault, and very purposefully sabotaging a budding dream, at that

and i think he's sort of gone through life in this way for a long time, this humble and passive acceptance of the roles and duty he's been placed in, of the world around him deciding who he's supposed to be. especially to lumpus. a best friend, sure, but nowadays an assistant, an emotional support crux to keep him (and the camp) from falling apart. i've always ran along with the idea that running camp together was lumpus' idea from the start, and look how it's turned out

i love how he says "pull yourself together", too, the tone he has as if he's scolding himself for daring to think or try to be anything like that again, that he should know better by now, when the moment's far passed

although, i don't think fame and danger/excitement are what he really wants out of life, even deep down — not anymore, at least. in the end, it's a lot more about healthy self development and sort of taking back "control" of his own path in life, right? and at the same time, a little of all that now and then wouldn't hurt...

Dark Frontier should have had an ending scene where after Seven returned to the ship and she's self-conscious about having 'betrayed' Voyager and whether or not the crew trust her (they retrieved her on Janeway's orders but her orders don't always match the feelings of the crew itself), thinking of Tom's comment, thinking of what she was a part of, she stumbles upon B'Elanna. They're both working well past the time to do so. Seven tenses up because B'Elanna looks irritated but she just goes into business as usual about mistakes in Seven's work (probably because she needs to regenerate!) and how much time and energy it took to find her and Seven apologizes for the inconvenience (sarcastically) and B'Elanna accepts her apology then she smirks, staring at Seven. Seven looks unsure about what this means. B'Elanna reaches up and clasps her shoulder. "Good to have you back, Seven." she says. Upon Seven's nod of acknowledgement, she leaves, calling over her shoulder "Get some rest!" threatening that she'll be back in the morning with more corrections if she doesn't. Seven stares after her for a moment. She continues to work. She pauses. She turns around and gets onto her alcove, beginning to regenerate.

i know muse's (literal) death was unceremonious and underwhelming but there is something thematically satisfying about the villain that made spectacles of his killings die in such a.. bland way

we can't seem to focus on anything with the exception of playing Cloud Gardens and going through iNaturalist observations to ID them but I just realised when I uploaded that huge batch of observations last year, I skipped over a hell of a lot of our nature photography when choosing which ones to upload and I could probably add a lot more and I kind of want to do that now

One thing that was kinda ingrained in me while storyboarding on Big City Greens was screen direction and the sort of illusion of progress that screen direction can create (this isn't just a BCG thing by the way, it's an actual film technique but this is where i learned it)

It wasn't a hard rule or anything but our showrunners generally preferred to have the characters going from left to right as the story/episode progressed (you'll probably notice this in a lot of movies now if you didn't know about this before haha). I've definitely had to restage sequences due to this rule when I first started LOL but it's become second nature to me at this point. Whenever a character moves left to right, in my brain, that means they're moving the story forward, much like how when you read it's usually left to right and you yourself are moving the story forward (obviously this is a more western thing).

I, in hindsight, realized I was doing this in my pilot. When I was first visualizing the pilot I always imagined Aika going from screen right to left at the beginning of the episode for some reason. I didn't really give it much thought but afterwards I asked myself why I did that, because I always start characters going left to right. It just felt correct in my head and now I'm understanding why. Because she's running away, actively trying to get away from the story and the goal. It's not until she gets to the cafeteria and starts moving left to right, towards Zira, who unknowingly is going to be the reason Aika has to dive back into her story. Then from that point on the left to right screen direction continues (even into the credits). I thought it was cool that my brain was just wired to do that after all these years but also a nice reminder about how important but subtle filmmaking and cinematography is. I think a lot of people do this even if they don't know the technique!

Idk why I felt like sharing this LOL. Just thought it was funny and maybe helpful for anyone looking to get into storyboarding or filmmaking! I actually don't know if there's a technical term for this? This video calls it Lateral Character Movement so maybe it's that!

but yeah anyways thought it'd be fun to share. I LOVE ART!!!

hi strange, random but i made a tumblr account specifically for this. i was watching your tumblr trad wives video and i really enjoyed it, was a fun watch, ive been generally watching a lot of your stuff recently as sort of like, comfort content (?) for lack of a better term. anyway, it got to a bit you were talking about how a lot of it is from like a similar origin point of like misogyny and patriarchy and how poeple cope with it, but you specifically said "horrors of being afab"? im definitely overreacting but it really hurt in the moment to be hearing something i personally related to and understood only to be suddenly excluded from it (im a trans woman), i had to click off. i know you cant take it back, that video was ages ago, but i know you're not like transphobic or anything so i thought id tell you that it really hurt and sounds worse than you meant and it'd be really nice if you could avoid stuff like that in future. thanks

When I said “the horrors of being afab” in that video i think i meant “the specific horrors of being seen as a subservient baby machine.” and I chose “afab people” instead of “women” because i know a lot of people who no longer consider themselves women still relate to that experience. In retrospect, I should have just said “the specific horrors of being seen as a subservient baby machine” because — as i’m realizing more and more frequently — afab is rarely a useful category. And it doesn’t surprise me at all that trans women can relate to most everything else i said in that video.

Yes there are specific horrors to having/growing up with a uterus but the horrors of womanhood are a MUCH larger conversation.

For anyone unfamiliar: the video was about a specific continuum of #girl online subcultures like tradwives, cottagecore, and coquette. As far as I’ve been able to tell, they do tend to be mainly made up of cis women. I’d be fascinated to hear more about trans women's experiences with those kinds of online spaces.
