I saw Dvořak's 8th and 9th symphonies on the list and knew I couldn't let you get away with not including his 7th. It's a hot take, I know, but not only think do I think it bests the Czech maestro's two follow-ups — I also believe it to be the greatest symphony ever written. And I've heard a ton! It's a stormy piece, full of diminished sevenths, that weaves bold Germanic influence (particularly Brahms) and the rustic Czech folk music that defined Dvořak's earlier pieces.
(Timestamps from this recording, with Kubelik conducting the Bavarian Radio in 1978. I wish his '71 recording with the Berlin Philharmonic was on YT but I guess we can't have nice things.)
Dvořak starts off with low rumblings from the timpani and strings, and introduces a terrifically Brahmsian 6/8 theme. The first movement is amazing, if not perfect — setting a high bar for a symphony that somehow still gets *better with each movement*. The second movement, which begins at 11:41, is a phenomenal work of beauty from the moment you first hear the wistful clarinet theme. It first reaches a climax at 14:53, and then later at 18:24. Supposedly, part of the inspiration for this movement was the death of his mother, which makes it all the more impactful. The following scherzo (20:55) does an incredible job of balancing a melody and counter-melody, and the trio (23:27) helps make this one of the best scherzi out there, combining a light touch with a resonant underlying emotional current. However, as good as the first 3/4 of the symphony is, it pales in comparison to the magnificent finale vaguely in sonata form (28:17). Immediately heard is a rising octave theme that collapses to an almost frightening G♯ (tritone in D minor), later developed into a soaring arpeggio theme in the strings (29:07). A more serene secondary theme follows, before leading into the development, starting with the clarinet playing the arpeggio theme at 31:27. The initial octave theme and the arpeggio theme combine at 33:14 to mysterious effect. Finally, at 36:19, the piece ends with a dramatic — though not drawn-out — climax, famously concluding with a Picardy third.

What are your top 5 favorite symphonies?
Apologies for how long this took! I've been busy with a composition.
I honestly haven't listened to that many symphonies because they're long and I prefer shorter pieces. However, here are my top five, definitely subject to change:
Symphony No. 6 in F Major Op. 68, "Pastoral" by Ludwig van Beethoven - my favorite symphony ever, it's just so lovely
Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz - daring and wild and unforgettably includes Dies Irae as a jig
Symphony No. 5 in C Minor Op. 67 by Ludwig van Beethoven - classic and quintessential
Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K. 550 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - a grand finale for the short-lived but prolific Mozart
Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73 by Johannes Brahms - I watched this one live and it was amazing

De figuris Veneris, Chapters 1-5
Chilton had a fiancee in Hannibal named Inelle. I love the character of Chilton and the thought of him having an ex-wife is funny to me. She definitely left him when she figured out he was gay.
The NYT plum torte recipe was famous in the 80s.
Freddie Lounds is a combination of Philip Seymour Hoffman's 2002 portrayal, the comically evil Mason Verger, and maybe a little Bunny from The Secret History. I love Chorostecki's version as well, but it didn't fit this story.
All articles and books included in the story are real and dated prior to 1983.
Psychology's understanding of empathy was limited in 1983. Mirror neurons were not discovered until the 90s. Hogan's Empathy Scale has been proven ineffective due to self-reporting bias but also includes some dubious questions such as "I prefer a shower to a tub bath," "I think I would like to belong to a singing club," and "I like to talk about sex." Incidentally, Robert Hogan taught at the Johns Hopkins Department of Psychology from 1967-1982. Heimlich's retirement soiree was partly inspired by him, as well as the Harvard criminal psychologist Will mentions in Red Dragon.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performed Brahms's Quartet in G along with Bach's Toccata and Fugue and Beethoven's Piano Con. #5 in September 1983 (Source). As a Bachian, Hannibal would have been more excited for the Toccata and Fugue, but it's only 10 minutes long and I only wanted to mention one composer.
I chose to have Hannibal live in Fell's Point instead of the fictional Chandler Square or the real Mount Vernon Square because I couldn't resist referencing Dr. Fell. I think it's rare for Fell's Point townhouses to have garages, but one was necessary for Hannibal's lifestyle. I took his floor plan from a real townhouse in the neighborhood that was most likely renovated within the last few years. Fell's Point has an interesting canning and shipbuilding history. It was just starting to become gentrified in the early 80s.
To me, De figuris Veneris (publicly available) represents academia's simultaneous fascination with and revulsion toward the erotic, especially in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Will and Hannibal pretend to themselves that they are more rational than the characters in The Metamorphoses (which also used to be considered a naughty book). They are so sexually repressed, I wanted them to act as if they received their entire sexual education from this "manual."
Will reads Gregory Horace's translation of The Metamorphoses. Published in 1958, it was the most recent translation available at the time and is now publicly available on the Internet Archive.
The Walters Art Gallery became the Walters Art Museum in 2000. I've never been, but if I was the art director I would display all their Italian bronze statuettes in the same room, including their Hercules and the Dragon Ladon.

Welcome to the 1940s!
This week we have Alfred Hitchcock's sole Best Picture winner Rebecca vs. Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator.
Rebecca's subtle suspense and cinematography provides an overarching feeling of unease. Critics praised all aspects of the film, with Variety (not included) applauding Joan Fontaine for her breakout role.
Rebecca was wildly successful at the box office, becoming the first film to play 6 weeks at the Radio City Music Hall. It also gave Selznick his second Best Picture win in a row.
It is definitely a film I need to go back and rewatch. I enjoyed it the first time, but that was at least 1-2 years ago, so the details are fuzzy. I do remember the unease!
The Great Dictator starts out our collection of 1940s war films. This satire comedy stars Charlie Chaplin in dual roles as "Adenoid Hynkel" and an unnamed Jewish barber. Chaplin's slow entry into full-sound films was equally as successful, selling out theaters in record time.
I'm not well-versed on Charlie Chaplin's work (yet), but this one is a hoot. There's an entire choreographed barber scene to Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5, and an obnoxiously long scene of Hynkel dancing with a balloon globe. It's great!
At the Oscars, Rebecca went home with Best Picture and Cinematography (black and white), making it the winner with the greatest number of losses to date.
The Great Dictator is still considered to be ahead of its time in both the use of satire and the subject matter itself. Charlie Chaplin took a brave stand at the time, not even considering the events that will occur later into WW2.
The refurbished insights for the 1940s include recognition by the National Board of Review's Top 10 Films and a screenplay nomination by the winner. These represent the attributes with the greatest disparity between winner and upset in the 1930s. The other three insights remain steady.
Unofficial Review: Just watch both. These two can't be compared.

Pra Buddha Chinnaraj
Pra Buddha Chinnaraj enshrined inside the temple of Wat Pra Si Rattana Mahathat (Temple of Great Jewelled Reliquary), colloquially referred to as Wat Pra Si or Wat Yai, is a Buddhist temple (wat) in Phitsanulok Province, Thailand.
The temple is famous for its gold-covered statue of the Buddha, known as Pra Buddha Chinnaraj (King of Victory). It is considered as one of the most beautiful and the classical magnificent Buddha figures in Thailand and received the highest worship among Thai people, equivalent to Luang Phor Sothon of Wat Sothonwararam in Chachoengsao Province (not including Emerald Buddha).
This Buddha statue was cast together with other statues of the same Buddha, including Pra Buddha Chinnasi, and Pra Si Satsada, which are currently enshrined in this temple.
According to the legends, there are still a controversial about the time of casting these statues. Some believed it was in the 10th century. Some said it might be in the 14th century. However, in the northern history (Pong Sawadarn Nua / northern chronicle) had been registered that.
“In the year B.E. 1500 Pra Si Dhamma Tripidok or Pra Maha Dhammaracha Lithai, after the completion of building of Wat Pra Si Rattana Mahathat wanted to cast three Buddha statues as the principal image in the temple. The king got five Brahmins named Ba Indra, Ba Brahm, Ba Vishnu, Ba Rachasingh and Ba Rachakusol. The king asked for renowned sculptors from Si Satchanalai town or Sawankhalok together with the first class artisans from Chiang Saen and Hariphunchai to assist in the casting of the three Buddha statues”
The first Buddha statue was a Mara Vichai episode of 5 sok (1 sok = 50 cm) 1 kueb (1 kueb = 25 cm) 5 new (1 new = 2.45 cm) measuring from end of laps in sitting posture. The second Buddha statue was of a Mara Vichai period of 5 sok 1 kueb 4 new measuring from end of laps in sitting posture and the third Buddha statue of Mara Vichai period of 4 sok 1 kueb 6 new measuring from lap to lap in sitting position.

The Sao Ha Day
The Sao Ha Day is the Saturday, the fifth day of the month on Thai lunar calendar, and according to ancient Thai Astrology, the Sao Ha Day is the day of “Keun Reu Ram Ha Kam” which means New Moon or waxing crescent moon of a Lunar Phase, and “Deuan Ha” which means fifth month of Thai Lunar Calendar / Month of April. It happens once in every 2-3 years. And the Soa Ha day is the most auspicious day for having Buddha amulets Blessing Ceremony which the highest power of “Kongkraphan Chatrie” (being invulnerable to all weapon attack), “Klawklad Plodpai” (pushing you away from all danger), and Maha-ut (stopping gun from shooting at you or the gun aiming at you would miss the target).
Thais believe that people who were born on this day would be protected by Thep Pra Sao Devaraj (God of Saturday), Thep Pra Sao was created by Hindu Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva crushed 10 of great Tiger Kings into powder, and wrapped with purple and black pieces clothes, sprung with elixir of immortality. The Saturday people were born with auspicious blessing from Thep Pra Sao Devaraj with prestige, and power to win over all difficulties in life.
Thep Pra Sao Devaraj AKA Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter.

Hello ^w^ what are some of your favorite oboe pieces/oboe excerpts, either to play or listen to (since theyre both distinct categories to me) ? I’ve been wanting to compile a bunch to try and find and print off of imslp so I can form a personal collection
well here is my spotify playlist of oboe (and EH) pieces for listening. note that it's like 80% classical era and doesn't branch out much into baroque or later romantic cause that's my preferred era and other people's tastes may vary
as far as orchestral excerpts go, the ones i LIKE include tchaikovsky 1, la scala di seta, brahms vln concerto, beethoven 6, scheherazade, bacchanale from samson et delilah, and don juan (the slow one...have not worked the fast parts yet LOL). but other really common ones to know include tombeau de couperin, tchaik 4, mother goose suite, brahms 1, das lied von der erde...i don't like practicing these as much but they do pop up a lot in classes and auditions so it's good to be familiar w them. when in doubt you can google "oboe excerpts" to get a sense for what's out there and/or get an excerpts book from a woodwind supply site like midwest musical imports or rdg woodwinds
i think good common solo rep to get to know are the mozart concerto, mozart quartet, marcello concerto, vaughan williams concerto, saint saens sonata, britten metamorphoses, and nielsen fantasy pieces. maybe the ibert escales and kalliwoda morceau de salon too. i'm not much of a soloist myself tbh i haven't studied half of these myself. but my personal faves are the mozart quartet and the kalliwoda concertino. i've been meaning to check out the schumann romances for ob/pno soon as well i'll probably do that in the fall

CATCH A FALLING STAR SERIES
CATCH A FALLING STAR TV
The Best of Irving Berlin's Songs from Mr.Season's Greetings from Perry Como (1959).When You Come to the End of the Day (1958).Perry Como Sings Merry Christmas Music (1946).It was also in the musical Forever Plaid.A musical phrase from the song appears in John Williams's score for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull during the motorcycle chase through the college. Hello Readers, So in the interest of being completely honest, as you deserve, this book was so much more my style then the first.
CATCH A FALLING STAR TV
A singer who had her own TV show in the 1960s reports the theft of the manuscript for her autobiography, and Derek Conway is only too pleased when he hears she's been in touch, being his favourite singer. With Ben Roberts, Ren Zagger, Jane Wall, Trudie Goodwin.
It is also featured in an episode of the FX black comedy Mr Inbetween. Catch a Falling Star: Directed by Clive Fleury.
CATCH A FALLING STAR SERIES
It was often featured in the TV series Lost, and was most often associated with Claire Littleton and her baby, Aaron.
The song has been featured in several films, including: The single won Como the 1959 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, Male. We will be consolidating our business with. In the UK Singles Chart, "Catch a Falling Star" peaked at number nine, whereas its B-side " Magic Moments" topped the charts. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closing of the Lexington Catch A Falling Star toy store on May 28th. Overseas, in 1958, the song also topped the Australian charts. Our main building hosts the Venus, Aries, Sun and Virgo suites, and also our two bedroom suites, Leo, and. Things twelve-year-old Frankie thought she’d forgotten. And rushing back with it are old memories. It was the first single to receive a Recording Industry Association of America gold record certification, on March 14, 1958. View of Coral & Sky cottages -6 one-bedroom cottages ( Libra, Sagittarius, the Gemini 1 & 2, Pisces and Gatehouse Cottage) and 2 two- bedroom cottages ( Star and Moon ), set in a lush tropical surrounding of fruit and flowering trees. Somewhere high above Frankie Avery, one of the world’s first space stations is tumbling to Earth. It was Como's last number one hit in the US, reaching number 1 on the Billboard "Most Played by Jockeys" chart but not in the overall top 100, where it reached number 3. Catch a Falling Star Sydney Clarke is a spoiled famous actress who is shooting a film when she suddenly gets angry and storms off. Perry Como's version features the Ray Charles Singers, who sing the refrain as a repeated round. The song's melody is based on a theme from Brahms' Academic Festival Overture.

I hope you don't mind if you could write this imagine.
It's Autism Month and I've been making chocolate puzzles in five different colours: Red, Blue, Yellow, Green and Turquoise. (The autism colours).
So would you write an imagine where an Autistic S/O was selling chocolate puzzles to different slashers (including those who have a friend or family with them) and if they accept the chocolates, or they refuse, or that they refuse the chocolates but are willing to donate for Autism Awareness.
The price is up to you; personally I sell them for a dollar :)
Thank you and Happy Autism Month
awwwwww- this is sweet! Thank you so much for the request! and happy Autism Month!
Anyways- On to the story
Side notes: I chose to sell them for a dollar, and I did a mixture of slashers accepting the chocolates and helping/ accepting the chocolates and refusing them but helping sell them. (some help the cause in a stranger way). I did a gn reader. ( I didn't include Jason, both Micheals, and Freddy because Everything I wrote for them sounded wrong and was wordy and I wanted to get this done today.
Warnings: fluff, just teeth rotting fluff.
Word count: 1557
Includes Brahms (With a side of Malcome), Bubba (with a side of his brother, Drayton), Billy Lenz, Billy And Stu, The Sinclair Brothers, Thomas Hewitt (With a side of Hoyt and Mama Mae) & Tiffany Valentines( With a side of Chucky and her son) I joined a few characters together as well
Slashers X Autism Awareness
Brahms!:
"No Brahms these chocolates are for sale for Autism Awareness, they are a dollar, I'm Helping because I have it." You say while trying to make a sign to sell the candy. You hear Brahms turn around and dart somewhere "What is he doing?" You ask yourself. You went back to making your sign when you feel a tap on your shoulder. It was Brahms holding 5 dollars. "Oh! Thank you! Are you sure you can eat 5, I don't want you to spoil dinner?" You ask while looking at Brahms. "No, I only want 1 box, the rest is a tip, So I can help," Brahms says while handing you the money. "aww, Brahms that's so sweet, here you go!" You say while handing Brahms a box. Brahms then lifts up his mask and gives you a kiss on your forehead "Good luck and please be safe dear, I'm sending you with Malcome". Brahms Mumbles after giving you a kiss. "I will I promise!" You say surprised that Brahms is letting you go farther than the driveway of the mansion. "Thank you!" you yell when Malcome comes to pick you up, You see Brahms nod, waving his hand bye. (Ima be Honest, He threatened Malcome that if you get hurt or if he tries something funny with you he will cut of his hands or kill him.)
Malcome-
(You are not dating Malcome in this one) "Heyy Y/n, So Brahms told me about that Autism thing and I wanted to buy a few for some family and friends who have autism." You hear Malcome Softly say while pulling out his wallet. "Oh! Malcome! Thank you! that's so sweet! They are a dollar each" you say with a soft smile on your face. "Hmm, Ok! Let's see I have 6 people who have it and I have a sweet tooth so 7 boxes, please! Malcome says with a heart-warming smile while grabbing some money out of his wallet. You take the money while handing him the boxes making sure that you thank him multiple times and waving him goodbye. You begin to count the money realizing that he gave you 3 extra dollars and a note the note read "I decided to throw in a tip, Plus it's easier to count money in 10s" you smile at the note and began to continue working on your sign. (When you saw Brahms you made sure to give him a hug and a kiss for telling Malcome about the Awareness)
Bubba!:
"Hi! Sugar, how's the sign going " Bubba says while looking at you write on a piece of wood serving as a sign. "Oh pretty good! Im selling them for a dollar!" You say giving Bubba a big grin. You see him pull out 5 dollars. "Well, I'm buying 5. One for me, one for Nubbins, One for Drayton, one for Chop Top, and One for you!" He says while Putting on his dorky little smile. You giggle in response, taking the money from Bubba and handing him 4 boxes while putting the one for you to the side. "You are so sweet," You say while giving Bubba a kiss on his cheek. Bubba hugs you with his free arm and semi- skips his way out the door ready to look for his brothers.
Drayton!-
(going off of the first movie he "ran" the gas station at least I believe it was Drayton it's been 2 years scene I re-watched it and I don't have a good memory)
" Ay! Y/n, want me to sell a few in the shop to help you out?" You hear Drayton call from the door. "Oh! Sure! Thank you!" You yell back, you hear his heavy footsteps as he grabs ten boxes and began to leave. 10 minutes later you get a call from him. "Hey. Do you have any more boxes I sold all 10, there are more people coming" You hear Drayton say on the other line. You hang up quickly grab a bunch more boxes and rush over to the gas station. You got there and you rushed inside handing him the rest of the boxes. "Whoa you got here quick," He says while grabbing the boxes and putting them on a shelf. "Oh! Here is the cash" He hands you 10 dollars and waves you bye as you skip out of the store. When he got him he not only had a new victim, he also had 40 dollars. He handed you the money and went to go take care of the new victim.
Billy Lenz!:
"psst y/n, can I help-" You hear Billy behind you holding a box of art supplies. The girls left to go shopping so they will be gone for at least 2 hours. Billy doesn't have any money, and he can't really eat chocolate (he gets sick after eating 3 pieces), but he at least wants to help make signs. "Sure Billy!" you say with a smile while giving him a signboard. You and him spent 2 hours coloring and making signs before you gave him a kiss and went out to sell some boxes. When you get back you had some leftover boxes so you sold them to the girls staying there.
Billy Loomis!:
"Hey babe, I heard about the Awareness thing mind if I take a few and sell them at school, also I'm gonna buy one for Stu so how much are they?" You hear Billy's voice behind you, you look up from coloring in the sign and say "Aw! That's Sweet! Sure! They are a dollar!" You say with a big smile on your face. Billy pays you a dollar and grabs 20 boxes to take to school. When Billy got back he handed you 24 dollars "Some people left a tip!" he says with a smile on his face. Billy saw the big smile on your face, happy that he was able to help so much. (Billy would do anything to see you smile)
Stu Macher!:
Im going, to be honest, he will do the same thing Billy did except he will buy two boxes for himself because he has a big sweet tooth. But pretty much he will take after Billy.
The Sinclair Brothers!:
All the brothers whether they're with you or not will get a box for them and their other brothers and will ask each other to help out. Bo will grab a few boxes and sell them in the shop and he will put out a tip jar for the cause. Lester will keep a few boxes and try to sell them to people he gives a ride to or he will request to go check out the shop to get some. Vincent will help make signs and paint some extra pieces of art so if they don't want to buy the chocolate they can buy art and the art can go to the cause( He will use the Autism Awareness colors) All will be so proud that you are helping out it will truly melt their heart<3
Thomas Hewitt!:
He bought a box for everyone in the house, even Hoyt. He came into the room, saw the colors, and knew what it was for. Tommy wanted to help but he knew he couldn't sell none and he isn't the best at art so he grabbed some cash and bought some for everyone in the house even you. He even went to Hoyt and asked him to help out. It warms Tommy's heart to see you help out with the cause so every time he even catches a glimpse of you, he will give you a kiss on the cheek/forehead <3.
Hoyt & Mama Mae-
After hearing about the Autism thing Mama Mae bothered Hoyt to make him Grab some boxes and sell them to tourists, he did and raised a bit of money. Mama Mae would set up a little shelf and a jar and ask people to buy some (If they don't buy any she would guilt trip them to at least put a dollar in the jar). She also raised quite a bit of money to help you out.
Tiffany Valentines!:
"aww, sweetface that's sweet" after hearing about the cause she would place a kiss on your nose and bought 3 boxes for her and Glen. She said, "Me and Glen will eat a box for Chucky, he pissed me off yesterday." she would say with a giggle, You smile in response and grab the money and hand her 3 boxes. She grabbed a few more boxes and said "want me to sell some of these to help you out, sweetheart?" You nodded in response happy to see her wanting to help. You two raised quite a bit of money for the cause.
Chucky & Glen-
They would do a father and kid stand, It is so cute and they are good at convincing people to buy a box, they raised a lot of money and even bonded some. (Im sorry I found this so cute, like both of them in human form, laughing and having fun melts my heart already plus them doing something so sweet that is just the cherry on top<3)
SIDE NOTE! I bought a box of puzzle chocolates even though I can only eat 1-2 pieces a day or else I will get sick lol, still love them though. Thank You for the request! Request are open! check out my pinned post, I will be doing a mass update on it tomorrow! That's all have a lovely day!

Bruckner – Symphony no.7 in E Major (1883)
Every now and then I see a composer described as “you love em or hate em”, and the longer I listen to classical music and see how people talk about it, the more I think this attitude can be used for any artist. Especially since extreme opinions are algorithmically given the most attention, and our way of communicating our tastes is equally encouraged toward extremes and hyperbolic language. Nothing can be “just” good, or ok, or interesting, or flawed; it’s either the best, or the worst thing ever. But maybe that attitude is more for Netflix shows or the latest Hollywood movie than for classical music.
Anton Bruckner didn’t escape this mentality despite living nearly two hundred years before the digital era began. When he was alive, the divisiveness in the public discourse was due to living and working in Vienna while loving Wagner. Side note on the “War of the Romantics”; on the aesthetic side there was the disagreement between developing traditional forms (the side of Brahms, C. Schumann, & supporters) versus letting new views on harmony and subject matter dictate how to structure music (Liszt, Wagner, & supporters). But there was another significant side that isn’t always focused on; being supportive of Jews, or being anti-Semitic. Not only was Wagner a musical radical in the way he conceived of opera, musical time, and harmonic development, but he was also a vocal anti-Semite, and his general dogmatic way of insisting on his views for every other subject was just as strong when it came to his bigotry against Jews. Supporting Wagner’s side of the ‘war of the Romantics’ didn’t only mean to support the new music aesthetics; it also implied that you were part of a growing movement of anti-Semitic German nationalism.
I only bring this up because I can assume that the hostility that Bruckner faced from the ‘conservative’ side of Vienna – including the ‘villain’ of Bruckner’s life story, music critic Eduard Hanslick – is more understandable if the stakes are higher and more consequential than “the music was too long and I don’t get it”. Despite his love for Wagner, Bruckner was more akin to the Wagner fans today who enjoy the music while ignoring or outwardly dismissing the evil side of Wagner’s art. I recall a story about Bruckner (one of the many stories used to talk about his ‘simple’ personality) where he had attended Gotterdammerung, and was enthralled by the music from beginning to end but asked “why did they burn her at the end?”. The music was more compelling to him than the content of the opera’s plot.
That could explain Bruckner’s musical aesthetic; taking after Beethoven’s 9th, focus on abstract music as the source of drama, but expand the use of harmonies, drama, and volume as if it were a Wagnarian opera. Its why, to me (and other fans), Bruckner’s symphonies feel like an emotional or spiritual journey despite being abstract music with no “meaning”. It also is why I’ve avoided writing and posting about Bruckner before. Like Mahler, it’s hard to capture the music in words and articulate how I feel about what’s happening in the music, but I’ve covered all of Mahler’s symphonies because I’d loved him a lot more than I did Bruckner. Only recently has my view of Bruckner warmed from “I like him sometimes if I’m in the mood” to “I love him and can’t get enough”.
Really by accident, or fate, I decided to listen to this symphony again two weeks ago, and Bruckner finally ‘clicked’ with me. I’d first heard him by picking up a few cds from my library, and putting him on in the background while I played old video games (in this case, Age of Empires 2). I thought he was epic, but hard to sit through and unless I was in a “Lord of the Rings” mood, I didn’t want to listen. A few weeks ago, Richard Atkinson came out with a video on Bruckner 6, which made me want to listen to him again. I decided to listen to the 7th again, and I finally connected with Bruckner’s soundworld.
One more note before going into the 7th; another reason Bruckner’s music was criticized in his life; it was for a relatively conservative orchestra where each section is noticeable. But that was because Bruckner was not trying to blend colors in an ‘orchestral’ way, but rather how one would write for the organ, which was his main instrument. So when we hear a Bruckner symphony, we are hearing the sounds he created for church services magnified through an orchestra, a kind of recreation of ‘sacred’ music but in a secularized context where one doesn’t have to think about any specific doctrine or view of the divine, instead you experience a sublime connection that is more uniquely ‘your own’. This is one example of how music was being treated as a replacement religion in Europe after the Enlightenment.
The opening movement of the 7th to me feels like a sunrise with the slow unveiling of the main melody. which rises in an arpeggio that evokes the drone prelude to Das Rhinegold. From this comes a seemingly endless melody that gradually develops with a group of themes played through. Long songlike melodies are rare for Bruckner’s opening movements – usually he uses motivic patterns – so the multiple distinct melodies in this work helped to give it the unofficial nickname “Lyric”. As the music builds tension we see another example of why some ‘hate’ Bruckner: intense build ups are created, but instead of climaxing they ‘stop’ and start over. After this first bursting episode, we get a dance-melody that, to me, sounds the most like “organ music”. Bruckner picks these melodies apart into his own way of development; counterpoint and modulation. In a way, bringing Bach and Schubert together. Every Bruckner opening movement ends with a grand coda where the music reaches its most extreme height, finally bringing us the climax we’d been denied by the previous build ups. Here it is only the first part of the opening melody, the rising arpeggio, over a long pedal point, and the volume and scope of the music rises with it into a transcendental glow of sound.
The adagio is the most famous movement of the work because it also has a long passionate melody, here in the minor and with darker colors from the use of Wagner tubas. Bruckner wrote this movement knowing that Wagner was dying, and it is like a musical memorial to him. That may sour the music for a lot of people, but it could be better to think of it as music in memorial of other music, for its own sake, and not for any toxic ideologies. This movement has two main melodies; a somber melody with unexpected modulations, and a bittersweet melody that tries to be uplifting. This movement is unique for a Bruckner symphony in having a cymbal clash, which was rumored to have been added to the score the moment Bruckner had heard the news of Wagner’s death. But that story isn’t true, the actual story is that a friend told him he should use a cymbal instead of a triangle for that moment. As usual, the more interesting ideas stick around to form a kind of mythos over music that we love.
The scherzo movement, again following Beethoven’s lead, is thunderous. The main melody is based on arpeggiated open fifths falling downward, and when the full orchestra blasts it, it feels like being under a cascading wave. Again, the writing is organ-like in the colors in the sections as they contrast each other like hands and feet over the keyboards and pedals. The trio makes me think of the kinds of ‘schmaltzy’ Viennese dances that would come up in Mahler’s symphonies, just one example of how Bruckner influenced Mahler’s style.
The last movement makes me think of the symphony as being symmetrical: the first half was made of two long movements, one bright and transcendent in the major, the other darker and tragic in the minor. The second half is made of two shorter and livelier movements that have the same major/minor characters. Here, the finale is a dance that opens with the violins playing the main melody, followed by a counter melody that’s more for rhythm than humming along. These ideas play in counterpoint in the winds until dying down in the strings, introducing a softer group of melodies. Later a large wave of unison octaves play out across the full orchestra, an inversion of the opening dance melody. This movement is in arch form, where the order of melody groups plays again in reverse order (1, 2, 3, 2, 1), though melodic ideas are used repeatedly, in the Bruckner fashion of breaking up motivic blocks. As with his other mature symphonies, the movement ends with another grand coda, where the arpeggio of the opening melody to the whole symphony returns, and reveals that the main theme of the final movement is based on this melody.
Movements:
Allegro moderato
Adagio: Sehr feierlicht und sehr langsam
Scherzo: Sehr schnell - Trio: Etwas langsame
Finale: Bewegt, doch nicht schnell

here’s a list of the best, mediocre and worst kdramas i watched in 2020
no one asked for this but it’s happening because i have thoughts (also all opinions are my own if you disagree then get well soon i guess... no i’m kidding make your own posts about it don’t hate me please) ahsjsj anyways click to read a lengthy post and if you actually read the whole thing then thank you i hope you enjoy this wild ride!
THE BEST KDRAMAS -
mystic pop up bar - this show had everything i ask from a kdrama literally i can name it all found family (to real family), well thought out characters, a mystery plot, special effects, soft romances that were well written, a happy ending! no show in 2020 even comes close to how good this one was! the writers literally guided you throughout the whole thing so you could come up with theories and didn’t do a ‘aha! gotcha’ thing where they want to prove the audience wrong but they wanted us to be right and satisfied! the worst part about the drama is that it’s still so underrated and people just brush it off as some random fantasy show but it’s so much more than that! 1000/10
flower of evil - who doesn’t want to see lee joon gi being the son of a serial killer, living with the name of a man who is in a coma, and hiding his real identity from his wife who is a detective? this show constantly had me at the edge of my seat on a weekly basis so the emotions i went through while watching this are unparalleled! the writers also did such a good job on writing a coherent story that made sense and tied up all the plot points in the end. just a really satisfying show to watch! 10/10
where your eyes linger - i literally bought a $8 viki pass to watch this show so it should tell you everything you need to know about how i feel ahsjsj the episodes were 10 minutes long but we got a good story with well written characters who got character development in a total of 80 minutes it’s insane! honestly it’s still hard to believe this show had rookie actors because they were just so emotive that you could feel all the happiness, sadness, yearning and pining! probably one of my fave kdramas this year because of the acting that i always constantly rewatch! would recommend 10/10
crash landing on you - okay so this drama was actually released on my birthday last year and it was a time in my life when i was going through a lot so maybe it’s the comfort this show provided me through that time this is why i have such a soft spot for it? like the romance was good, it was funny, there was found family, the nk soldiers were all softies, there were strong female leads, soft male leads!!! ahh!! no other show on this list made me think about the unification of south korea and north korea irl because i wanted se ri and jeong hyeok to be together 4ever! but the only issue i had with this show was the ending they gave seung jun if they didn’t do that i’d give this show a 10/10 but just for that they get a 9/10
psycho but it’s okay - this was one of those shows where you’re literally like ‘wow everyone here needs therapy’ but this show was amazing i loved the story telling and how each episode related to children’s book/fairytales! the writers also did a good job with how carefully they talked about mental health in depth without villainising their characters but actually tried to make the audience understand why they were this way which included all the side characters too who had a well thought out story in each episode! also the dynamic between moon young, kang tae and sang tae was everything to me the actors all did an amazing job portraying their characters, it truly was a healing drama. the only thing i didn’t like about this show was the whole plastic surgery plot with the mother like that was very far fetched but it provided drama so i’ll let it slide because the rest was amazing. this show is a solid 8.5/10
18 again - another underrated gem! who would’ve thought a remake of that zac efron movie could be this good!! lee do hyun stole this show for sure the way he portrayed his character and gave heart eyes to his kids (when he’s only 25 irl was the best thing i saw this year ahsjs) i loved the family dynamics in this show, i loved how it talked about what it’s like to be young parents and how society still think it’s taboo to be divorced! it’s a show that makes you laugh and cry at the same time and that’s why everyone should watch it! however, the biggest clown thing this show did to me though was that i got sls for the first time while watching a kdrama... hwang in yeop if u’re reading this i love u and u deserved better 🤡 that aside this show was a 8/10
itaewon class - i actually didn’t watch this drama as it was airing because i thought i wouldn’t enjoy the plot but when i watched it i binged the whole thing in 2 days and my biggest regret is i didn’t watch it sooner! everyone knows i have a soft spot for park seo joon since he’s my favourite actor i’ve literally watched all his dramas like he could star in the trashiest drama out there and i’d still watch it and be like wow (looking at she was pretty 👀) this show aside from the acting had one of the best revenge plots in a kdrama! just watching a character realistically hustle his way to reach the top while fighting the corrupt man whose son killed his father was so so satisfying to watch! however, the love triangle in this show was questionable idk what they were trying to do with that but it personally annoyed me! but still i’ll give this show a 7.5/10 because i enjoyed it a lot!
do you like brahms? - kim min jae and park eun bin.. that’s all you need to know about why this is a good kdrama! i’m usually not a big fan of melodramas and everyone knows i prefer rom coms but this show was just so perfectly melo that i loved all the angst and pain we got!! also just watching two introverted people awkwardly fall in love was amazing! the characters story arcs were also handled pretty well with song ah finally learning to speak up for herself and joon young learning to express how he truly feels! but... the love square? was probably the most annoying thing the rest in my opinion was nicely done! i know people had mixed feelings about the ending but i loved that after all the pain joon young and song ah went through they got a happy ending together! 7/10
find me in your memory - okay this show started off very slow and it was confusing at the start but as it progressed everything in the plot started to fall into place! i mean this show really took opposites attract to a new level where the male lead could remember every single detail from his life but the female lead had to forget some of her traumatic memories to help her cope with her life! they were also tied together through a mutual character who was a big part of their lives in a different way! just an interesting melodrama with interesting characters i liked it! and moon ga young... i love you queen!!! 7/10
THE MEDIOCRE KDRAMAS -
more than friends - was the storytelling in this show groundbreaking? no. was the acting decent? yes. also probably the main reason i stuck with this show until the end! i think we can all agree lee soo had the best character development on this show he started off as a bad boy who wore one ear stud to actually becoming a well liked character... who else did it like him? no one. also the chemistry between the mains was 🔥 but the second male lead was so annoying is there a opposite word for second lead syndrome because i had that for sure! i think the best part about this show was the people i watched it with on here... shoutout to the five of us ahsjsj also this show introduced me to a talented actor/singer like ong seong wu (y’all know my kpop knowledge is nonexistent so no i didn’t know he was in a band called wanna one) all in all a predictable show but i had fun watching it so 6.5/10
tale of the nine tailed - i didn’t actually watch this show i watched it through gifs and instagram posts ahsjsjs so am i qualified to talk about my opinion definitely no... will I talk about it anyways yes lmao. lee rang deserved better that’s all goodbye and take care. 5.5/10
start up - probably one of the most awaited opinions. y’all thought this would be in the worst kdramas section but i decided to give this show some rights. the show started off strong, lost it’s way after episode 6 and then the last episode gave me what i wanted so i have mixed feelings. the writing was not the best i think we can all agree, love triangle as a plot device? wow so groundbreaking 🤡 the characters on the other hand... i loved every single one of them i mean ship wars? i don’t know her. the show had a lot of potential that was wasted but we also got some cute moments between the characters so there was really no winning or losing with this show? but in all honesty you can’t put a talented cast together like this and then just decide to give the audience a mediocre plot but the writers did exactly that! i think i can redirect y’all to my ‘crimes this show committed’ post for a in-depth analysis. lastly nam do san was a GOOD and REFRESHING male lead and ji pyeong was also a GOOD and FUN second male lead!!! this show gave me the ugliest ship war ever that i was transported back to my high school tvd days so thank you for that!! but the cast was loveable and all had a lot of chemistry together so here’s a 5/10 maybe that's too generous but... i think the reason why i didn't enjoy watching this show as much was definitely because of the tag on here lmao
THE WORST KDRAMAS -
the king eternal monarch - i miss clowning this show so much. the amount of braincells i lost while trying to understand this plot... i should be compensated by the writers. however, woo do hwan was a treat to look at on a weekly basis... however the writers kept decreasing his screen time even though he had a dual role... make it make sense? and i cannot comment on the plot of this show because i still don’t understand anything? also in my opinion tae eul and lee gon were the most bland couple of 2020, there was no chemistry between them and there was just a random kiss in episode 5 and they randomly said i love you... where was the development? also lee gon was soooo boring and such a one dimensional male lead! literally all the side characters were so much more interesting and the cast was good... but this plot. 2/10
do do sol sol la la sol - i wanna fight the writer who decided that the plot twist on the show would be that jun is a minor? i had no expectations from this show but it looked cute and nonsensical but that plot twist made me run the other way so fast that i never looked back! just because jun is a boy they really thought this would be excused like lmao we all have critical thinking skills???? the clown behaviour. a solid 1/10
record of youth - i hate this show so much. imagine not utilising park so dam who just starred in the biggest oscar winning movie to her full potential. imagine just making her a love interest to park bo gum’s character in the year 2020. i watched it up until episode 6 and i kept waiting for her character to get development... but it never happened so i dropped this show. also this show featured the MOST useless love triangle i have ever seen in my life like what was the point? also park bo gum’s characters family was straight up annoying (minus the grandpa) but they got so much screen time like that should’ve been given to park so dam... also villainising a gay side character for no reason at all in the year 2020? this show was a waste of my time i want the 6 hours i spent watching this back. -100/10
backstreet rookie - i watched one episode of this and literally wanted to rip my eyeballs out of my head. idk what ji chang wook was thinking when he signed this drama i think he lost his ability to read because that's the only reasonable explanation for why he chose to star in such a dumpster fire show! this show had a racist character... had a high schooler kiss an adult... sexist jokes... just the worst things you can think of in a drama... this show had it. i still can’t believe so many people watched this show to the point where it had better ratings than pbio... really made me question everyone’s taste? but sorry can’t relate my taste is excellent so here’s the rating this show actually deserves -1000/10
if you made it this far... thank you for reading. let’s continue to love some kdramas together and get clowned by others in 2021! looking forward to it 😅
