giyuu tomioka is a very quiet man. he rarely says anything and prefers only to speak when absolutely necessary. being the water pillar, no matter how undeserving he feels of it, is his position.

one faithful night, he was given a mission. he did as told and followes his kasugai crow to the location wherein he was to slay the demon. he finds that he was too late and that the entire village was in ruins. in a quick response to the situation, he slays the demon and looks around to see the damage done.

checking every house, he finds everyone slaughtered. everyone but you. he tries to assess your condition. looking around, he sees three bodies. a male, a woman and a girl.

he comes to you and crouches. “uhm. who are they to you, kid?” he asks, an awkward aura filling the room. to you, it seemed he didn't know what to do with a child. you weren't surprised. your parents didn't either.

“m-my parents..the other girl is my older sister...” you mutter. he comes in a little closer, making you flinch. “it’s okay. i- uh- i won’t hurt you.” his voice sounded so calm. like the tranquil lakes of your home. or the serenity of the sky at night.

still shocked at the situation, he ponders what to do with you. with what you witnessed, and at your age too, you may just end up like him. labeled as insane. that was something that won’t go away easily. he didn’t want you to go through it. “what’s your name?” he asks you.

“i’m [name]…who are you, sir?”

“I’m giyuu tomioka. would you like to come with me, [name]?”

your eyes widen at his question. was he being serious? he wanted to take you in? in the spur of the moment, you nod. though you felt as if you wouldn’t regret the decision.

months later, you had grown accustomed to giyuu tomioka. his presence in your life has drastically changed you. granted, the trauma of what you saw was still there, but you were happy with him. you called him dad, and he didn’t get angry with it. you could hug him and he wouldn’t push you away.

you sat out in the gardens of his estate, watching the sky, as a familiar bird swoops in and drops a letter onto the man beside you. “what’s that, dad?” you ask.

opening the letter, you peer over to your side to get a glimpse (one which he gladly gave you privilege to do). it seems to have been a while since he received a letter, so naturally he was curious. he reads the contents and his eyebrows rise. it seems that master ubuyashiki has discovered of your presence and existence in his life and has invited him to bring you to his estate to meet his colleagues. he was of course, conflicted if he should expose you to their…antics. would you grow to hate him like they did him?

on the day you were set to meet the rest of the hashiras, you walk into the ubuyashiki estate gardens with your father. you hid in his haori, slightly nervous because you hadn’t had contact with much people other than the people in the tomioka estate, and of course, tomioka himself.

peeking out of his haori, he softly urges you to say hello to the people in front of you.

“h-hello. i’m [name] tomioka. it’s- it’s nice to meet you..”

Also ok here’s the plot of Giyuu Can’t Communicate the 7 part series where Tanjiro helps Giyuu befriend the other Hashira

Giyuu either expresses nervousness about training with the other Hashira given his behavior in the past or confides in Tanjiro that Shinobu told him he isn’t well liked

Tanjiro of course is like ‘well that’s fine because I like you and I’m going to help you win the other Hashira over too!’

We begin with Shinobu because she’s the one who said it in the first place. Tanjiro drags Giyuu to the butterfly mansion and tells Shinobu he wants to volunteer to help out for the day. Montage of Giyuu making rice balls and doing patient checkups with Aoi, sparring with Kanao, and of COURSE Shinobu returns to see him sitting patiently on the floor letting Sumi Naho and Kiyo braid his hair🥺

Tengen is up next. Tanjiro tells Tengen that Giyuu wants to learn to be flashy. Cue 80s style dressing up montage set to Walking on Sunshine where Giyuu gets progressively more and more insane outfits with Tengen and Wives either shaking their heads outside the dressing room or doing a thumbs up

Mui is just a kid after all and clearly a total little shit so I think a totally harmless competition of some kind like a race or tag or an obstacle course would give mui a chance to get to know him and also talk some shit, a pastime he seems to enjoy. By the end they’ve developed their own Silent Language as fellow introverts

THEORETICAL HASHIRA SUCCESSORS

okay so if one of the hashira needed to be replaced, who’d it be? i put . perhaps a silly amount of thought into this . but whatever. let’s go!

(we’re also temporarily ignoring the actual criteria for becoming a hashira and Just talking in theoretical. like if the hashira in question died or retired who would have the skill and ability to meet those criteria and become their successor)

starting off with the FLAME HASHIRA position!

so the obvious pick here is rengoku senjurou, but we all know that that’s probably not happening. after all, it doesn’t even happen in canon!! i guess if he underwent a crazy insane training arc and gave another go at being a slayer, then like. maybe? but we all know that senjurou’s not really demon slayer material. no hate no shade, sometimes the pen _is _mightier than the sword

second option would just be for rengoku shinjurou to take the mantle back up. this, i think, is the most likely option??? and in a way i’m kind of surprised that canon didn’t go for that. like i get that shinjurou’s retired and all but i mean it’s not like he’s even that old or anything (or at least i don’t think so lmao) and also the only reason he retired was because he was super depressed!! when kyoujurou dies and shinjurou just kinda gets over his issues, there should be literally nothing stopping him from just picking his sword back up

but whatever i guess

secret third option!!! because kanroji mitsuri knows flame breathing, it’s technically possible that she could switch from being the love hashira to being the flame hashira, but i feel like unless she was really pressured to do that, she wouldn’t. she’s got her own breathing style that she’s really good at!!! she doesn’t need to go back to flame breathing!!!

now for mr. tomioka’s theoretical successor that he wants so bad, let’s talk about the WATER HASHIRA

so . theoretically kamado tanjirou could take the position because he probably is the best user of water breathing in the corps after giyuu (not counting urokodaki who’s retired), but obviously tanjirou Probably Wouldn’t because he’s got sun breathing that he’s trying to master instead. and like i guess he could still do that while also being the water hashira, but it’d be pretty weird for the water hashira to not even use water breathing. giyuu is disappointed but not surprised

beyond that, there aren’t really many options. murata exists and can use water breathing, but is he really hashira material? i don’t really think so. kanzaki aoi also apparently used water breathing, but not only have we never even seen her use it, she also doesn’t seem to really like . fighting. i love the girl, but not everyone’s mentally cut out to be a hashira

and that’s ... kind of it for water breathers. like, i guess urokodaki sakonji could come out of retirement and take the position??? but that’s like . that’s so much, y’know? this isn’t like shinjurou, who just kinda played hooky until the corps retired him, urokodaki has probably been out of action for literal actual decades

dang, it’s not looking good for giyuu. guess he’ll just have to stick it out and stay the water hashira for a bit longer.

if you thought giyuu’s options for a successor were bad, wait until you hear about the WIND HASHIRA position

because unfortunately for us, sanemi is the only known wind breathing user who is also currently alive. there is literally nobody that we know who could replace him

in line with mitsuri being a possible successor to kyoujurou, technically tokitou muichirou and hashibira inosuke could switch styles to become the wind hashira, but unlike mitsuri, neither of those two had foundational teachings in wind breathing, so it’s . very very very unlikely that they would.

like there are probably other wind breathing users out there, but we don’t know ‘em

no love for the STONE HASHIRA

poor poor stone breathing. used only by gyoumei in canon. nobody else. he doesn’t even have someone on a technicality like how muichirou and inosuke have distant ties to wind breathing. he’s just got genya, who can’t even use breath techniques

oh-ho-ho, but the THUNDER HASHIRA?

somehow, we’ve got TWO WHOLE OPTIONS here!!! so, obviously, in current canon there is no thunder hashira and there presumably hasn’t been one for a good while (though it’s anyone’s guess as to whether kuwajima had a successor or if the position has been vacant for literal actual decades) but there are currently two pretty good users of the thunder breathing technique!!

and they are agatsuma zenitsu and kaigaku!!!

now zenitsu’s the obvious one, and while he has his issues with any of the sword forms after the first, he’s still pretty damn tough! and he could totally just learn them. like maybe he just needed a bit of field experience before he was ready to pick up the others!!

now kaigaku . turns into a demon. but if he didn’t, then i think he’d be a shoe-in for the position of thunder hashira! five out of six is good enough! and he’s pretty dang tough too!! shame about the whole demon thing or he’d probably have been first in line

so i know that there are supposed to be nine hashira because of like . the nine strokes in the kanji, but also i feel like typically there are probably supposed to be the main five and then maybe a few bonus guys here and there. and so after the main five, i feel like there would be a lot less pressure about needing successors. but here are some anyways!

tsuyuri kanao is obviously next in line to become the FLOWER HASHIRA but as shinobu’s tsuguko, she also theoretically could make a good successor for the INSECT HASHIRA position. aoi might not know insect breathing, but as shinobu’s other sort of apprentice, she could theoretically take up the title as well. but again, aoi’s got her issues with the demon slayer lifestyle
