something about the fact that eleven cooks.

something about the fact that eleven was born with every food aversion on the planet -- on any planet -- texture sensitivities, heightened perception of tastes, overactive gag/choke reflex, etc

and unfortunately for him, time lords do need to eat;

and they've never really had to deal with this before. all their lives they've been perfectly fine just using the food machine in the tardis or eating whatever is on offer wherever they happen to be; but now suddenly, that's not enough. knowing what he's going to be able to eat and what's going to make him gag and choke on his own spit takes a long time and a lot of trial and error, and the process isn't exactly pleasant. and then even when food is fine, passable, it's still, often, not really satisfying.

and the tardis should be able to accommodate this, except----

except something about another quirk of eleven's: the way he likes things to be real.

something about the way eleven started using the tardis as an actual phone box sometimes. something about the way eleven's "scanner" (well one of them at least) is actually just a window. about the way he put a real, actual lightbulb in the light fixture on top, a lightbulb that burns out sometimes and needs changing, even though the tardis could easily, and always has, just simulate one like the rest of her exterior. and the way she kept out a bunch of exposed wires and tubes in the console room just because he likes to tinker with them, even when nothing actually needs fixing. because it makes him feel grounded while flying through the void.

so yeah. something about the fact that eleven cooks, and is canonically very good at it. others tend to like what he makes, even when his choices tend to be kind of weird. wherever there's a stove, sooner or later, eleven will be in front of it, making something to share with those around him. eleven running a restaurant, inventing a new kind of pudding--

he's the first doctor we've ever seen actually cooking, and he does it because he wants to, because even though yeah, he could just generate food with a food machine, it's not as much fun and eating it doesn't feel as satisfying as when he's made it with his own hands. and he does it because he has to, because if food isn't satisfying he literally can't get it down. because no one else can make what he needs, can be relied on to get all the nuances of flavor and texture right so they won't take him by surprise and choke him, even perceive those nuances in the first place. because he needs to be the one to do it or he can't know it's safe.

and of course, fish fingers and custard, the first safe food, the original safe food, and the ultimate safe food, but also more a feeling than a food. because it is and always will be associated with amy. and so, then, it is the feeling of love and acceptance and family and belonging. and the process of preparing it, even if in this case it can be as simple as sticking frozen things in a microwave, is half the point.

that scene where oliver confronts james after he broke his nose ... it's a love confession. god. it is. you’re like a bird. this fragile, elusive thing. if i could catch you, I could crush you.

(why is this romantic as hell and back? nothing anyone would ever say to me would be as romantic and crushing and full of terrible desperate yearning as this)

and then james says that line from romeo & juliet balcony scene. something something about it translating into i hate myself because i’ve done something hateful to you.

it's like when oliver told colbourn that as actors they felt two things at the same time, what their characters felt and what they were feeling. so james is trussed up and confused with his actions and in love with oliver and quoting ROMEO MONTAGUE. this isn't duality, it's parallel. it's one thing on top of other.

...and of course the scene ends with oliver holding james's hand over his heart and james staring at it like he's just realised... the enormity of this. this unspeakable thing.
