girl meets world's legacy will most likely be its total flop as a sequel to boy meets world, as well as the worst autism rep ever lol but I'll personally always remember it for how much it FUMBLED THE BAG because it introduced a stupid love triangle.

why were there so many shows in the late 'aughts dedicated to RUINING their shows with pointless ship wars? star vs the forces of evil, danny phantom, and girl meets world are just off the top of my head.

we have these two perfect best friend characters. surprisingly perfect friendship. okay, more like, veering on homoromantic.

and then you know what they do with it? They insert the MOST WHITE BREAD ass love interest ever in the form of Lucas.

his defining characteristic is that he's a dreamy goodboy, and there's nothing wrong with that except that he's EXTREMELY boring compared to the oddballs of the rest of the cast, like Farkle or Maya or Riley.

The one thing that subsidizes his bore factor is that all his love triangle ship drama fuels conflict in the show.

he's the straight man--ha, get it? kys

he's dreamy enough to have these perfect friends in conflict over him.

and it kind of ruins the fun of the show.

like, i don't want to see Riley and Maya fight. and they don't even want to fight either. so they're just sighing sadly at each other, meanwhile im over here WHY WOULD YOU EVEN WANT TO DATE LUCAS??

like i appreciate a show that demonstrates that girls in competition over a guy DO NOT need to be catty or mean (from what I can remember), but like, this should have been a 1 episode plot AT MOST GOD

they expand on the plot in the most bizarre ways possible too. like i havent watched this show in years, but i still remember this shit.

The premise of the show is that Riley falls into Lucas's lap on a bus in ep 1, so they're basically an end game couple from the beginning. But they have to introduce a shitty love triangle.

So they then have an episode where Maya "acts" as Riley for a day, and while she's acting as Riley, she realizes that Riley doesn't love Lucas and most likely sees him as a brother. which, first of all, is the craziest shit ive ever heard, and second of all

COULD HAVE BEEN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL scene about comphet EVER in a disney kids show.

the DRAMA. the PROJECTION. "she's confused" "feelings you don't understand"

the contrast between what Riley THINKS she feels for Lucas and what Maya feels for Riley. Riley ASKING MAYA "how do I feel, then, maya?" and MAYA's "just tell me what to say" !!! It's the "Good Luck, Babe" of it all!!!!!!!!

it astounds me that this exists in the show! i remembered nothing else about the show EXCEPT for this scene and the terrible autism PSA farkle episode lol.

they use this to fan maya x lucas flames and some drama about maya becoming riley in the last season, which I have zero clue about because all that exists to me is that one crystal clear moment of comphet.

so yeah, while I don't care for sabrina carpenter's music, im extremely happy that she covered chappell roan's "Good Luck, Babe" because it led to this amazing edit that compiles all these moments lol

what a moment. everything, it all has led up to this 67 views edit.

last thing I gotta say, I feel like the drama of "are you becoming me" would've ATE as drama, especially in a sapphic context. like some jennifer's body type shit. instead, it's poorly executed, one-sided, and does harm to both of their characters, from what I've read. There are more essays in the works- I have two right now that I'm working on. The first is related to the Clementine comics, I'm revisiting Clementine Lives and both Books 1 & 2, and I'm reading through Tillie Walden's other works [Spinning, Are You There?, On a Sunbeam, The End of Summer, A City Inside, and a few of her shorter comics] to do a complete and way too thorough analysis of the comics before Book 3 comes out.

I've already done reviews, but when I go back and look at my review of the 12-page Clementine Lives comic, I'm like, ".....hhnnngggg I could do that better now-" y'know?

That one is taking a long time, though. Not only do I have to reread the Clementine books, but I'm reading Tillie's other works and analyzing them, too. It's the most research I've ever done for one of these and so far the things I'm discovering are.... well, they're interesting with the added context.

As for the second essay, I'm not going to spoil the concept, but I will tell you that it's about clouis and violentine. Think of it like a sequel to my essay about Louis and Violet as love interests, but I had an epiphany so I'm tackling a different angle that I find super compelling. So, look forward to that.

anyway - my unhinged rant aside. if you would like a quick read + want to catch up but would like something shorter to read and youre still interested in Whatever The Hell is going on with otto i would like to recommend reading the side stories otto's bittersweet peddling trade log and the summary for the sequel to that (tsuchigumo / three idiots set out! earth spider episode). otto's trade log takes place before otto even meets subaru and tsuchigumo takes place post-arc 4 (so no spoilers for later arcs!!). these stories also help explain a Lot of ottos thought process and it adds more context to his later arc stuff!!

It started with this drabble (god it was the second one I ever did) which started me thinking about it. Because they both have a tendency to push themselves Too Far in combat and be Extra about it. And like I said, they're both sociable and funny and very very good at killing people brutally! They both have a fixation on one specific person (Doctor and Texas respectively) but like. I think they're open enough to sleep around.

Then I wanted to write a fic where lappland was a good(debatable) puppy sub for someone and I remembered that drabble, and then this happened.

Basically! I think they both have a lot of trauma and shit and sadism/masochism is a great way for them to Actually Feel Something and they take turns turning each other into bloody messes. They're not actually dating or like Into Romance but they do both care in their own fucked up ways (see the end of Puppy Time where gravel leaves lappy the Good Painkillers) and this isn't going to change either of them but they're having fun so it's fine (probably) (if you ignore the screaming)

Maybe one day I'll do a sequel where lappy doms and we get to see how much Gravel actually likes being beaten (I read a fic once where she gets recalled from combat, masturbates in the medic tent while they patch her up, then goes back out and that changed something in my brain), but I make no promises

moreover, in chapter 313, he establishes what he really wants in life

“Now that I have a prosperous life in this fiefdom, I want to protect it and enjoy everything that it offers. And now, I want to stay here and laze around for the rest of my life. With my family, I have come to yearn for the relaxed life of a retiree. And that is why...”  Lloyd meant every word he said, and his voice now contained force.  “It will be just burdensome for me to obtain more power, larger territories, a stronger military, or something along that line. I'll be kept away from leisure to deal with it all. Doesn't it seem like a lot of work? Thus, my only wish is for my family and the people around me to be at ease and happy. I want to live the rest of my life surrounded by their warmth without another day of work.” 

does this sound like a guy who would enjoy being married into the royal family, to the queen herself at that, someone we know for a fact loves to squeeze the last bit of use of the talented people around her. does it.

he just. wanted to stay home with his family. relax for the rest of his life with his loved ones in the place he made his home.

plus i also have my own doubts about whether lloyd truly wished to marry or if it was just him desperately trying to stop being so achingly alone. but that's a whole different rant lol

bk moon did write a novel that's focused on romance actually you're right! it's called 'i became the dragon king's chef' but i haven't read it yet and haven't really looked for the entire manhwa. it's cute, berkis and cheongi are adorable, but they do have the advantage of their novel being focused on their relationship and how it develops. it's a different story completely when the romance is just an add-on imo

and you're also right about javier and silurian's romance being a webtoon original! in the webnovel there's nothing to indicate that they were meant to be a couple or that they would be in the future. the sequel throws a line about them having children, but doesn't elaborate either. it's just,, a thing that happened apparently. personally i think it was a 'pair the spares' kind of thing but what do i know xD

weird choice of the webtoon to completely erase silurian's arc about not needing to marry in order to become her father's heiress and instead make her the love interest of one of the protagonist but like. i've said enough about that lol

The year had a bit of a slow start tbh. looking at my statistics page in my journal, this is the month i read the lowest amount of books. I think i'd rather have a slow start, than start strong and lose all my motivation after a couple months? plus i read some nice books in January.

Im going to start with the novels in this post, i'll do a second one with the comics/GNs/mangas later!

Hunger Pangs : True Love Bites -- Joy Demorra

A historical fantasy with vampires and werewolves, a polyam romance, a witty narrator, and some cool worldbuilding. a good time overall! i was happy to start the year with a good read. It's not perfect: the plot feels a little uneven (the book starts with a hint of world ending, but this is immediately put on the back-burner til the last third of the book), the resolution feels easy, the characters are a bit too archetypal (the broody vampire main character is named Vlad, i mean...). It did not rewire my brain but i'm looking forward to reading the sequel one day!

The Cruel Prince -- Holly Black, French translation by Leslie Damant-Jeandel

I'm rereading my notes in my journal and i need to be fair : i didn't like this book, but the reasons i didn't like it can be summarized with : this is a YA novel. a really popular YA novel, so i guess i had some expectations? they weren't met (i have read the rest of the series since then, as a whole i still think it's not as good as i was told, but it's alright). Also i read it in French, which i think made the writing sounds more childish that it actually is. A 17 years old protagonist will act like a 17 years old.

The Midnight Bargain -- C.L. Polk

This is the story of a girl who wants to study magic but has to get married (because of misogyny) in a world where married women can't practice magic (because of misogyny). i actually really liked it! The magic system was fun, the author compared it to pokemon, in the sense that people "capture" spirits and use their powers to practice magic, in exchange for a taste of humanity, like the feeling of walking barefoot in the sand of a slice of cake. it's quite cute, i like stories where mundane things are made precious. i mean, it's a really fucked up system with a lot of abuse, but that part is cute. this is a very pretty book overall, with a bit of friendship and romance and sorority in the mix (it feels a little easy, a little feminism 101, a little caricatural, but it feels fair). It has a lot of tropes i like in this kind of story. i recommend it if you enjoyed Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater, it has a similar Fantasy of Manners vibe.

We could be so good -- Cat Sebastian

Love me some Cat Sebastian historical romance. I feel like this one is more interesting as a mid-century New York historical novel with some insights into the life of queer people of the time, than as a romance. It's cozy and not much happens. things i have written in my journal about this book : "i do not want to make hasty conclusions, but i'd say there is a non zero chance that this story started as a Stucky fanfic" and "i want to share a home tenderly with my homosexual lover" and "the kind of historical novel where life seems a lot easier (and cheaper) than nowadays". There's a sequel i'm looking forward to reading!

AGAIN SPOILERS ahead. i guess it's convinient, he has like. probably the most fletched-out story out of all the characters since he's the one you control, even when rodriguez, who is normally the leader, joins your party. although in the rodriguez route benny doesn't reflect all that much on his life from what i remember. speaking of reflecting on his old life! if rod dies and the story kind of, goes how it usually goes, at certain points you get flashbacks to benny's life before the flash. he worked at a burger place with his friends (clyde and liam) where rod was their manager. besides the two guys he was also friends with a girl named amy (at least i'm pretty sure that's her name, based on the fact that a joy mutant called the same thing uses the move "familiar cry" which implies that you knew that person, but also in the hopeless (an in-the-works sequel to the hopeful) it seems like that childhood friend is alive?? idk i'll keep calling her amy it's shorter). she's stated to have friendzoned him and (as i interpret it and i might be a little biased as someone aroace) if im being honest he doesn't really look like he cares that much? if anything clyde and liam (the latter actually called her out for "leading benny on" once) seem to care way, way more.

^i like this dialogue (it goes clyde, benny, clyde btw) i think it's funny but it also serves as an example. he doesn't even get what they're talking about, i think he just doesn't give a shit about "getting their relationship to another level", thruthfully. ok benny aroace icon headcanons to the side, coming back on the tracks um. so benny's like, well he's trying his best as a leader if rod dies, he's pretty much the sole party member to try and support his friends and cheer them on. he tries to help lanks after what happened to him when they got captured by the lovelies at the beginning of the game, even though he doesn't exactly know how to do that. in, geez i think clyde's route? he gets shot through the eye, which either turns him into a joy mutant or eventually kills him later on. i can't for the love of me remember what happens in liam's route but he for sure dies, since it's not his route. in rod's route they just all die at the end. NOW. in benny's route at the sportsdome, he gets shot in the knee, lanks gets taken and clyde gets set on fire but survives (if he isn't joyed). they fight on a little more but both of his friends eventually end up dead, so he tracks the lovelies down and kills them. the final boss is in every route, a guy named hart, the leader of the lovelies. beltboy's run actually has one of the more difficult versions of this fight BUT what is interesting is that for the first part (before hart turns into a joy mutant, beginning a phase 2 of sort) liam and clyde actually ARE THERE TO HELP!!! like. in benny's spirit. this doesn't happen for liam or clyde, they're stronger because of their anger and grief, especially liam, but i think what allows benny to win is his kind attitude and frienship, which is really cheesy but idk what other way i could interpret that. THIS also. allows him to survive in the end! as five is relieved that he's approached her like a normal person and gets him patched up. idk idk he makes me feel so many things. kind of unrelated and again, i'm probably biased cuz i love projecting, but i think reading him as an aroace man like. makes sense. i see a lot of how i think in him. he does make comments about "getting the girl", yes, but i think that's more to like, please his friends and keep their spirits up or whatever. other than that he seems disinterested in a romantic relationship with amy, it doesn't bother him at all it's not sexual or anything, he tells five that "he needs a friend" when he stumbles into her hideout half-dead after the fight with hart. aroace guy TO ME!!

i just woke up and im kinda groggy but here's rambling about video games

i saw a post about ff7 remake and how it's so good you should play the original ps1 game and then crisis core before playing the rest of the remake games (i can't tell if there's 2 or 3 at this point) and there's nothing wrong with this at first glance but it left me feeling weird.

admittedly I only played the original ff7 and never even finished it (i got to the final dungeon, turned around to clean up side content but then never actually did), but the more I think about it the more crass it feels to keep digging up a game from 1997 for "new lore" or whatever. it feels exhausting trying to keep up with it even as an outsider, and it feels shallow from the development end. like im glad the games are supposedly good and fun and interesting, but you can take that talent into making a new game! instead of just remixing or adding new details to a game that already had a solid ending.

I've subconsciously gravitated towards niche media in part because i don't think I'll have to worry about Capitalism milking it forever i can just play it and enjoy it. it frustrated me when Atelier Ryza got popular because oops now the next three games in the atelier series are literally just about Ryza, with a quick detour to make a direct sequel to Sophie. i even liked sophie 2 and im playing through ryza 2 right now but i just can't help but think about how we haven't gotten a new atelier protagonist since 2019 (the fucking gacha game does not count it is literally the epitome of recycling old popular characters for money and ulrika isn't even in it)

i don't think I've made any sense today but if you read all this thank you and go check out fucking Dark Cloud or something with the peace of mind that you only have to play the one game to see the full story.

minor update! it's been like, a week into the goal--you know. the goal--and we have gained 5 chapters already (plust like an extra five bc i missed a wip that had some on it) SO we are at 134/365!!

daily wordcount is about 3.1k now! its really fascinating to see it be dynamic, you know? like, finishing a chapter actually has an effect on the total wordcount per day.

as for where these chapters went, here's a list:

hearthstone got finished (4 chapters, including an epiloge---though im planning on posting these over the next few weeks so it doesnt really count)

fourth got a chapter (a family affair) and it's cycled back around to the next one on the docket for tomorrow

epistolary sequel got about half a chapter (they're gonna be long ones)

handfast got a chapter and a half. im very excited about this one. i love the utter nonsense it is. its fun to have a feelgood fic you know?

lion blooded got its first chapter finished! i had to scrap a whole scene and a half, which sucked, and honestly i kind of futzed the timeline again but whatever. i dont care i like it this way

where you're needed now has 2 chapters in queue (up from the 1 from last week)

and i just finished the third chapter of dissolution (which has spread out to probably be about 5-8 chapters, depending on how much goes on in these next ones) this one is the hardest one to work on? but its good i think. the worldbuilding expansion it does is, well not important but interesting, i think. i hope people like it :)

i've been considering, if i finish epistolary in time, i'll post it for valentines day. that would be fun. we'll see! the goal is that every time a fic in the active wip list gets finished, i either pull up a whole new set or discard which ones need time to germinate. im not sure which i'll do for this set, since technically hearthstone was the one that got finished last time and it was kind of a focus all on its own.

anyway, that's it for today's update on word stuff! i think im gonna call it a night and see what fics i can pull up to read. :P

February Wrap Up

the accidental pin up by danielle jackson- mostly a fun book that i really wanted pictures for. the conflict made me super uncomfortable and was too drawn out but the chemistry is cute and i loved the descriptions of the clothes.

overall grade: B-

monster by walter dean meyers- I read this for class and it was fantastic. super intense and not generally what i pick up on my own. i loved the framing device of steve imagining his life as a movie and giving himself control over the narrative.

overall grade: A

lost in the moment and found by seanan mcguire- this series is really compelling and always turns expectations on their heads.

the island of missing trees by elif shafak- my sister loves this book and since i have been shoving books at her for the past year, i figured i would read it. it was beautifully written, i was impressed it was a translation. the timeline shifting took a little time to get used to. i did prefer ada as a lead over daphne and kostas. also who doesn't love a tree as a narrator? i would recommend looking up trigger warnings as it is a book about trauma.

overall grade: A-

serendipity edited by marissa meyer- an anthology of short, romantic stories. as with anthologies, some were good and some were okay, but gave me a few ya authors to check out in the future. very mixed bag but sweet. also it was free cause of the grad school program im in

girl, serpent, thorn by melissa bashardoust- this was a bumpy ride for me. it felt like it could have been a series. and every day i think of it, i change my mind on how i feel about it. i wanted more from it. the themes were interesting and i wanted to see them examined more. i liked the relationships and wanted more of those as well. i'm still not sure how I feel??? I will be reading more of her books in the future.

overall grade: B (I guess??)

all our hidden gifts by caroline o'donoghue- i read this book because i got the second one for free and while i enjoyed the first, it reminded me why i read so many firsts in series and not the rest. overall, this was an exciting read but i doubt i'll read all of the sequel. also, the main characters were 16+ years old and wow, they seemed like 13 most of the time rip. i do highly recommend looking up the song the author cowrote and then based this book on. also, this reminded me of the daughters of the moon books if anyone read those.

overall grade: B-

OCs/Fandoms. Totally chill with OCs, just have some type of an about page. I can try and fit my muses into anything, and will follow blogs I can see working (even if I don't know the fandom).

Be patient! I have a full time job and a few other blogs I hop on. I usually go with the flow, see what muse I have. Plus please be aware that I struggle with depression. Some Days are good and others not so much.

OOC. I love to chat ooc. Through IMs or discord. Whatever works for you. Although, discord is only open to mutuals.

Icons. Half of my muses do and half don’t have icons. In all honesty I probably won't use them too much. I'm definitely okay with not using them straight up either.

Disney Star Wars/Sequels. Okay so... I am not a big fan of the sequels. I won't take much from most of Disney live action shows, but I am not a grouch! I'm very much open to talking to find a common ground for plotting!

I would most definitely love to do a continuation of love bites! I have some small scenario/Drabble ideas but nothing substantial for a proper fic length tbh. >:( but I'll figure one out and try to write a sequel! lmk if there's anything in particular you want to see!!
