Midnight Flight

(Marshall Ward x Reader) The perks of having Marshall Ward as a boyfriend.

“…What are you wearing?”

For a second, you marvel at the sheer otherworldly presence your boyfriend has while suited up, voice clear despite the helmet he adorned.

…and maybe you could understand how he was able to amass a fanbase based on how his suit clinged to his chest and stomach.

“Are you going to just stand there, spacing out?”

You bring a finger to adjust the goggles resting on your head, bringing them down to cover your eyes, “Just didn’t think the great Radiant Black would need me to state the obvious.”

He suddenly pokes your lens, causing you to startle, “Are you planning on going snowboarding? And why are they…green?”

Does he need to sound so perplexed?

Deciding to humble your wayward boyfriend, you press your hand against his stomach, feeling the firm muscles concealed by his fascinatingly cold suit. A humming pressure responds to your touch, no doubt because of the actual black hole in his chest. He really is so interesting.

His hand instinctively moves to grab your wrist before stopping, fist clenching and unclenching before robotically moving to return to his side. You let out a huff of amusement when you feel his abs unconsciously flex, whether it’s out of nervousness or something else, you don’t know.

“You—!”

“Making your whole personality the colour black is understandable if you’re a high schooler,” you retort with a smile, “and you’re, like, thirty, so…”

“I am not thirty!” He jolts, the specs of light that are his eyes narrowing, “…yet. And, I’m only a year older than you!”

“But, really, the goggles are for you to finally take me flying, not all of us have built in gravity suits,” you deflect, “Maybe we’ll run into a criminal! I’ll need a name…Radiant Green!”

You were mostly messing with him, so the deadpan stare you received was validating. Your smugness is replaced by quiet embarrassment when Marshall suddenly hoists you up, arm hooked beneath your knees as you’re cradled to his chest. You definitely did not make any noise.

“Radiant Green…” he scoffs, shaking his head mockingly, “You haven’t even promoted yourself up to Space Cadet. And if we run into any trouble, you’re hiding on the nearest rooftop, got it?”

“…you really have made Radiant Black your personality, huh? Too good for green?”

“Was that ‘full speed ahead’, I heard?”

“Slow and steady…! Please?”

“The things I do for you,” his grip on you tightens before he launches into the night sky, air rushing past your ears. Thankfully, your googles allow you to see your surroundings clearly; the infinite darkness ahead, the artificial lights twinkling beneath you, and Marshall who glowed. His static blue eyes meet yours.

He stops, hovering in the air.

“Okay?”

“Okay,” you reply, arms tightening around him.

“Ready to take it up a notch?”

“We’re going to beat up a villain!?”

“I meant going faster! We are not beating anyone up,” he denied, jostling you in reprimand.

“Radiant Black and Radiant Green! Go!”

“Space Cadet.”

Space Cadet: With these googles, no one can tell where I’m looking!

Marshall:

Marshall: are you trying to motorboat me?

I think out of all the suits in super hero fiction, the radiant ones are the most interesting, like it comes from a black hole! And yes, I took liberties…
