10 Anti LO Asks

1. i see LO stans defend it as "it gets some people into myth! thats good!" like?? i dont think ive seen a group of readers less interested to learn the actual mythology than lo readers because theyre convinced that IS the truth and RS is so accurate about it. yeah they know it doesnt take place in modern times but why would they question hxp being consensual, demeter being the bad guy, apollo being a [redacted], and so on? they tried to edit the actual gods' wiki pages to match LO for gods' sake!

2. I remember awhile ago there was an ask about heads being used for height and I would like to add 7 heads is used for realistic height and proportions, so yeah, it's a bit weird LO Persephone only averages about 5-6 heads best with even shorter limbs that are not proportional to her (especially her legs for some reason? Her torso is usually too long too) while LO Hades sometimes goes beyond 8 heads (which used to show extreme fantasy proportions) with too long limbs. RS has an art school degree!

3. it really seems at this point lo artemis will end up a villain too because shes framed way too much as anti hades and close to her brother to not be. i can def see rachel pulling she's a "tragic" villain who didnt get enough love as a child and shes so jealous of poor persephone and what she has over her that we'll have to pity her while also wanting her to suffer for being the first person to stand in hxp's way. rachel loves her "twist" villains after all.

4. LO sees more and more clear to me it's about trying to make us feel bad for Hades and show he "deserves" Persephone as a symbol of his desires (a wife to not push back against him or his actions, a wife who does whatever he wants, a wife who is dedicated to giving him heirs and will drop everything for him, etc) while she's just ... there. RS can claim all she wants it's a story about Persephone but it's really about how Hades should get what he wants with Persephone being the ultimate "prize".

5. so persephone who was originally studying biology (which makes perfect sense for a spring goddess to study) now wants to give that up to align even more with hades??? rachel please stop claiming youre "empowering" persephone when you have literally ripped every unique feature from her to make her just hades 2.0. she has NOTHING left to her that was her own while he's given up nothing for her. Hades gets his perfect, docile wife and everything he wants while she has noting and bends to HIS whims.

6. i think rachel also thinks over-complicating the story makes it "deeper" which is not the case?? theres nothing wrong with a simple story (and tbh the hxp myth is straight forward in what to do with it) that overcomplicating it with politics, courtroom drama, attempts coups, and a full out WAR really?? adds nothing to it?? like its supposed to be about hxp getting together too so it even more is just filler that she doesnt have the skill to tackle.

7. i realize the assets arent the same between CSP and Photoshop but you can google greek photoshop brushes or greek architecture in sketchup and find countless free assets?? like theres so many resources at her disposal to at least make LO look aesthetically like it's greek (even superficially) but even that's too much of her. Like why make it a story about "greek" characters when she clearly just wants to make a story about NYC socialites hate poor people 🤔🤨

RS really desperately wants to come across as some deep, complex writer who is so well versed in genres and tropes and how to 'twist" them as if the majority of her writing isnt just playing the tropes completely straight with zero change, tumblr posts, memes from 2015, being overtly sexual in how how horny P is, and "borrowing" theories from fans who have more creativity than she does. rachel, honey, youre writing juvenile smut for kids, youre not reinventing the wheel here.

9. I swear white women like rachel and miller are convinced theyre ~subversive~ for depowering powerful goddesses to then "empower" them, putting a gross emphasis on them being sexually abused by random men to excuse them being "dark', then having them be obsessed with and throwing away their lives for the sake of a man. also a dose of hating mother figures. how is rick riordan a white cishet man who shows more respect and nuance in his series for kids than two women writing for literal adults??

10. The thing with deconstruction in lit is that it's used to look at other interpretations of a story's meaning, but H/P's myth was very set it only had one meaning? RS is basically claiming she's found a secret better meaning in the text which was never there and claiming it as fact. That's why most call their H/P stories a "retelling" instead of deconstruction, bc retellings has the leeway to change whatever they want, but deconstruction means academic dissection, which LO very much is not.

doing this meme for mr captain jack rackham because I think i’m finally ready to try to articulate my feelings, even if no one asked (i’m sorry this post is so long)

Why I like them:  So... here’s the thing... 

I’m kind of known for dressing like a fancy gay pirate. I’ve made a lot of cosplays over the years, but my pirate outfits are what I’m most infamous for. I met my partner over a decade ago while dressed like a fancy gay pirate. Many of my friends have seen me in pirate outfits more often then they’ve seen me in normal person clothing. Once upon a time I went to art school to study fashion design and I said “yes this is the aesthetic I’m going to cultivate” and now here we are. 

When I first heard that they were making a big budget period drama that was a prequel to Treasure Island, I knew that it was going to be My Next Hyperfixation, long before I had any notion of how much queer representation there would be or even how well-written the show would be. But it took me a couple years to finally feel like I was Emotionally Ready to delve into the series (Sometimes I’m bummed that I missed out on participating in the fandom while the show was actively airing, but I’m also glad that I was able to binge it all in its entirely, because the time waiting between seasons would have made me too crazy). 

And within those first two or three episodes, I saw that greasy rat man with his mullet and his avant garde facial hair choices and whatever the hell was going on with his wardrobe

and I said to myself “wait... Calico Jack... as in, the pirate known for his fashion sense...”

and I had one of those moments where I realized that this character was so much My Type that I was mad at myself for being so predictable. and I questioned some of the life choices that I made that led me to the point that this greasy rat man the sort of character that I immediately knew that I was going to fall in love with.

But that was only the beginning, because as I watched more of the series, I related to him more and more-- I think it was mannerisms at first, and things like “having to explain the vocabulary you just used to your coworkers” and “I would also like Anne Bonny to be my wife”, but gradually I began to relate to him for increasingly personal reasons. I first watched Black Sails after I had gone through a particularly rough couple years, and the catharsis of watching Jack go from “they pissed on me” to being the character who is ultimately victorious over the series’ main antagonist was an emotionally intense experience. I was already projecting on him by the time that he delivered the “great art has felled empires” monologue, which was the moment I knew that I was deeply invested in this character, and he hadn’t even started showing off his best looks yet. There are, of course, moments where his actions are... morally dubious, but even those instances just managed to make me more attached to him, because I respect the hell out of how well the writers succeeded in making him such a well-developed character. 

By the end of the series I realized that I related to this character on an intensely personal level, in a way that I haven’t connected with a fictional character in years, except it felt more profound than the times I’ve connected with fictional characters in the past because this time I was an Adult with a deeper understanding of the Self. I don’t want to sound like a soulbonder or a kinnie or whatever the kids are calling it these days but it really felt like this:

tl;dr I came for the wardrobe and stayed for the waxing about art philosophy and historiography

Why I don’t: ... undermining the revolution wasn’t great...

Favorite episode: I’m a big fan of 2.06 because... you know...

but also because we had to wait 14 episodes to see this pirate on a fuckin boat

Favorite season: Season three features so many of my favorite tropes it feels unreal... Jack and Charles as co-captains sharing authority and declaring their undying loyalty to each other... the way he goes full dandy the moment he has money to burn... Jack has to gain the approval of his judgmental father-in-law... his homoerotic rivalry with Rogers... getting arrested and then rescued by his significant others in the most dramatic way possible... I choose to believe that there was a brief, shining moment right before the beginning of season 3 where Jack was able to just chill and be optimistic about the future and bask in Charles Vane’s approval amidst his pile of gold and new wardrobe while Anne and Max were off doing lesbian stuff...

Favorite line: “It’s the art that leaves the mark, but to leave it, it must transcend, it must speak for itself, it must be true,” I mutter to myself as I draw vampire pirates at 1am

Favorite outfit: oof what a question...

This look is probably my overall favorite and there’s a good reason why it’s the outfit he’s wearing for the final climactic battle. He has so many amazing coats, but the details on this one make it my favorite, and I also love that gradient scarf and the pink embroidered shirt. The color and pattern mixing here is impeccable. It makes me appreciate his hot mess of a wardrobe in the first season more, seeing how his first outfit just looks like plain boring muslin and then more color & patterns gradually get introduced.

This is my runner-up just because I love the shade of blue and the prince charming vibes that are happening here, so I’m sad that we only saw this look for like 3 seconds.

OTP: I can’t remember the last time I cared about a ship as much as I care about VaneRackham.... sometimes I get mad that they succeeded in making me have these Feelings about fictional characters... I watched a show with multiple canon gay relationships and ended up fixating on the queerbait white man ship where one of the characters dies, because I have questionable taste and I love making myself suffer. 😩

Brotp: Jack and Max’s relationship means so much to me 💕

Head Canon: This might be me projecting, but because of his background in textiles I headcanon that Jack was more competent at sewing than anyone else on the Ranger and that skill came in incredibly useful on more than one occasion. The fancy coats that we see him wearing in seasons 3 & 4 most likely would have been custom tailored specifically for him, but I imagine that all of his earlier ones were acquired secondhand (one way or another) and he sometimes did patching/adjustments on them himself.

Unpopular opinion: I respect the artistic liberties that were taken with his character design, but he should have been allowed to wear some silk stockings and show off his calves at least once tbh

A wish: Obviously my #1 wish is that Jack and Charles had been permitted to kiss, but I also wish that we had been able to see them on a ship together clearly I have no choice but to assume that whenever they were on a ship together there was lots of kissing going on An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: man it would sure suck if Jack was executed for piracy within like three years of the series finale 5 words to best describe them: this adam ant looking motherfucker

Muse for Your Muse (4/?): Fillmore as Toshio from Only Yesterday

“One might say this is the interdependence between nature and people.“

So! It took me a really long time to come up with this one because honestly Fillmore is one of those characters who I get less inspo from fiction and more inspo from people I know. A lot of my Fillmore inspo just comes from the crazy and wonderful world of college and the people I know and love who care intensely about things like sustainability and Fillmore is kind of my loving tribute to them, flaws and all. However, I watched Only Yesterday earlier this month in my little journey through all the Studio Ghibli films and I definitely got Fillmore vibes from Toshio.

In my opinion Toshio is honestly more of a plot device in this film and Taeko is the actual important character (the movie is really just a beautiful character study of one person, so I don’t think it’s a bad thing that the other characters tend to take a back seat in terms of development). But I think Toshio serves an important function. He takes the film from a simple story about a woman rediscovering herself and her past through nature to something a little more nuanced by pointing out that the countryside is not just a retreat for city people to go find themselves but a living, breathing place with its own struggles and challenges. I think there is a tendency in these kinds of movies to simplify the pastoral aesthetic, but Toshio is the voice of the people who actually live in the country, reminding the viewer that life in the country is not all safflower-picking and sunset-viewing. There are serious challenges.

Aaaand yes Toshio goes on several tangents about organic farming throughout this film, but that is what made me love him and associate him with Fillmore, my farmer boy. They both have farming and agriculture in the blood and while Toshio leaves the country to live in the city for a bit, he ultimately comes back to it and becomes really passionate. I’m sure there was a time in Fillmore’s life when he thought he belonged somewhere a little more exciting than the Arizona desert, but realized that he actually really loves where he comes from. That might have happened his first year at Pride U tbh and I feel like he is always talking about home.

Also aside from the farm thing... a lot of important scenes in this film happen in cars. CARS. You know what Fillmore is............. A CAR :)

I don’t have any fun memes for this one but I highly recommend Only Yesterday it’s truly a fascinating film!!! And the fact that it was made in the 80s/early 90s but the themes really resonate today!! Also Taeko’s fashion in this movie is seriously on point I mean look at that HAT!!!

Why I like them/why I don’t: I LOVE my banana boy!! Very precious kid! Loved him almost immediately when he was introduced. He’s a huge dork but stern, stubborn, and skillful enough that he can take things seriously when he needs to. Some might see him as stupid but he’s far from it, he just has a lot of love to give? He is easily caught up in his own little world but it’s all good intentions (I mean, besides his pervy thoughts but hey he’s at that age). (Unpopular opinion time) I get tired of hearing people bitch endlessly about how his development either led to nowhere or didn’t pay off or was disappointing, and he deserved better and blah blah blah shut up. I see his character as a very necessary unfortunate turn of events for an innocent caught in between the events of a war. If you’re gonna have a war, there’s going to be plenty of innocent loved ones that are lost too soon in their young lives, the journey to achieving their hopes and dreams cut off prematurely and indefinitely and with no justifiable explanation. That’s. Just. What happens in life — in war. It’s sad but not everyone gets to achieve all their dreams before their time is up... I guess I’ll give it to you that I understand that people see this as too tragic for a story aimed at its demographic, but for me, as bitter as it is, it’s incredibly refreshing, especially coming from this franchise. This doesn’t mean I don’t agree that damn, Yugo didn’t deserve the pain he went through, but that’s just the side of the story you have to understand. I don’t think his story and what it ultimately amounted to was incomplete or underwhelming. I do think it was painful and tragic and unfortunate and unexpected. But that’s just what war and fighting amount to at times. It takes and it takes and it takes. And sometimes you just don’t get those things back. But you still love what you had of those that lost it all before they lost it all. Either way, in the end I don’t see Yugo complaining, and neither am I. Anyway, this got a bit more of a rant/vent but I just wanted to put that out there... also just... I love him. He is pure most of the time.

What I like about their appearance: reminds me of sonic the hedgehog??? perfect for his aesthetic. his face is so cute. BLUE BBY WITH BANANA HIGHLIGHTS!! PRECIOUS. and also i love his voice, it fits him perfectly.

Do I prefer their dub names or original names?: well it’s the same in the dub but i’ll say original here just because the YUUGOU JA NE YUUGO DA will never get old and no english puns will ever top that tbh.

How long? (Months/years): Going to be about...3 years in October. Platforms you’ve used: Tumblr. Best experience: Honestly, despite that I am always AWOL nowadays and barely get any replies out on a regular basis and my IRL is the messiest its been in forever ---- the best moments I’ve had on here are the moments I’m having right now. Right now, because even if I’m slow, I’m surrounded by roleplay partners I regularly talk to. People I can plot with randomly that don’t make me feel out of place or like I’m doing something wrong, that are honestly amazing writers and always inspire me everyday. Where even if I’m slow, they don’t mind waiting and continuing the threads with me because they’re as into the whole plot and storyline as I am and are willing to see it through to completion, even if it takes a bit of time. And I appreciate that. I appreciate that so, so much, because I haven’t felt so much like an actual part of the community before, and it’s something I never thought would ever happen. It’s a great feeling to have and I hope I’m able to keep that going no matter my time restraints, because a lot of my dedication still goes to this blog and the people who are a part of it, and I hope my efforts to follow through on the different relationships and interactions that develop on here rings true no matter what.

Writing preferences.

Fluff, angst or smut?: Smut is such a huge preference of mine but I prefer to leave that for certain relationships or situations so it’s not just random sex here and there, thus it’s admittedly really, really rare for me to write it. But personally, I feel like I suck at fluff though I do love reading it sooooo - angst is second best! Plots or memes?: God, honestly I love plotting, but memes and asks are so great to get the interactions going beyond threads, so I appreciate the latter more than anything tbh. Something to fill out the spaces between the main plot, because there are so many situations muses could get into between one situation and the other and I love to explore the before and afters of their relationship. It’s why my queue has so many memes running through it constantly and why I should probably try to keep a lid on that until I get my ask box under control. Long or short replies? bshbdhsabdhasb I WANT TO GIVE SHORTER REPLIES, but that is so rare and I’m so sorry for that !! Jackie just.... has so many emotions and is very WEIRD for lack of a better term sometimes, so its like. You have to explain why she’s doing something stupid so it doesn’t sound like I just pulled a random rabbit out of a hat and VOILA. IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE BUT HERE YOU GO. I don’t like that, in all honesty, so I try to make sure everything appears so it has an actual reason to the corresponding reaction and I think that’s helped people really come to understand Jackie better in the the same way I do. We have our similarities that allow me to understand her character very well and also helps me to understand my own in the same way ( its good therapy, honestly ) but also, our differences run severely deep. She’s fairly reckless and very brave and I try to play it safe ( read as: steer clear of situations where there’s virtually no chance of an accident occurring ) and keep things in order. She’s loud and usually the life of the party, but I like to stay quiet and listen and only speak when I have something important to say. She prefers chaos and I prefer peace. Things like these are just a few of the differences of what I had in mind. In terms of similarities as well however, I would say it really leans more towards aspects of aesthetics and hobbies, such as music taste, and food, and scents and interests; more than anything else, really. Though emotionally, I will say that Jackie’s past relationship with her ex boyfriend resonates very closely along the same lines of my own issues with an old ---- crush/interest of mine. Whats your favorite song(s) to sing/hum? I have never loved a song enough for me to sing or hum, but I guess the song I would sing as a meme is Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You

Whats your favorite flower/tree/plant? Hmmm, a clique pick but I would say Sakura (cherry blossom), and that is bc I am a sucker for that pink, Japanese aesthetic   

Favorite colors? Really into bright colors that could be described as soft, my fav is light pink that reminds me of blushes and light purple.

What do you always doodle? Cute girls doing cute things, drawing cute girls are my specialty. I also do doodle a lot of Dekus and sometimes just myself as stress-relieving doodles.

How do you take your coffee/tea? I find coffee disgusting, in my opinion, it is the actual drink of pure death. I only drink tea, PURE TEA. No sugar coating or honey to cover up the natural taste of tea

Favorite candle scent? My fav candles are some low key vanilla scented candles and my new fav is called a Childs wish which was bought by my dear friend. As long as the scented candles are not too disgustingly sweet or too strong, then it’s a-okay.

Whats your go-to dance move when you are alone? Uhhhh, I don’t dance either. At most I would just tap my foot or sway my hips.

Favorite quote? Well I have 2, one said by my mother “If you don’t like something, you either adapt yourself to that situation or you change the situation to your own liking” and my personal life motto “Do no harm, but take no shit”

Favorite self-care routine(s)? Oddly enough, I find studying and cleaning my work table or my room as a relaxing routine. It distracts me from thoughts of wanting to die or generally depressive stuff. Other routines include; cuddling with my cat, doodle all kind of stuff and taking a hot shower.

Fuzzy socks or house slippers? Both of these makes me way too hot and sweat way too much, BUT, during winter period or if I am cold in general I wear fuzzy socks. My currently fav socks are the ones I bought in Turkey that looks like reindeers.

Tanz der Vampire St. Gallen - Act 1 Spoiler Review

Following my little commentary about the St. Gallen production, I have decided that I would actually like to make a full review. Now, back in April, @kahorifutunaka and I watched the St. Gallen production of Tanz der Vampire, directed by Ulrich Wiggers. At first, our opinions were quite mixed. Now we are closer to an agreement: The St. Gallen production does have some great solid directing and the cast is EXCELLENT, but the modern concept is wasted potential. But...why leave it here? You saw the title, right? Let’s get into full spoiler territory! To those who would like to still see the St. Gallen production without being spoiled too much, turn away right now. Everyone else, let’s go :D

Overtüre: Ok, here we can get a first positive: The Orchestra is actually full live in St. Gallen. You WILL get your goosebumps here...in the first few seconds. Remember how magnificent the animations in the original Tanz are? Well...here we get a forest graveyard first and most, followed by a gigantic castle that looks a bit like Bran Castle in Transylvania. The castle actually looks quite nice, but one would wonder “Why is the castle being shown now?” Well, this question is going to be answered in a few minutes. We then see...a much MUCH younger Professor Abronsius running onstage into the fog. We now see two gigantic rat statues with red eyes standing onstage. I am still unsure why they chose RATS of all things. I can imagine this famous Harry Potter meme being inserted here. “Let’s put rats in front of Krolock’s castle!” “But why rats?” “What other creature would you put there to be associated with vampires then?” “Oh, I don’t know...maybe a bat?” Anyway...Abronsius proceeds to examine those rats when he is suddenly...stuck in one of them? Yeah, I still don’t know what that was about...

He, ho, he: Only then does Alfred enter the stage. He is pretty much the same age as in the original version, just dressed entirely differently. He proceeds to sing his song until he discovers Abronsius in the grasp of one of the big bad rats! He frees him and together they proceed to walk...into the castle? Huh...weird...

Knoblauch: Ok, here is where things might get a little confusing at first glance. There are no more signs of a warm and cosy inn where the villagers hide from vampires. No, no, no...they are WITH the vampires already. Yeah, the inn and the castle have been merged into the same place. On the walls, you can see “Sanatorium K” written in fancy gothic letters. So...Krolock owns a Sanatorium...this version of Tanz is, therefore, taking place in an asylum? Jeesh, am I glad they mean the resort kind of asylum. If they would have shown Krolock and his cohorts merely THINKING that they are vampires because they are all cuckoo in their heads...I wouldn’t even know how to react tbh XD Anyway, the thing that ultimately takes the cake in this scene is the gigantic Garlic head in the middle of the room, with taps attached to it...wait...does it mean that the humans ACTUALLY drink garlic juice in this version? Holy moly, THEY are the crazy ones here! But anyway...there is actually something I like in this scene and that’s the costumes of Chagal and Rebecca. They don’t look like stereotypical jews anymore. Rebecca actually looks like a normal person here. Yeah, she’s a bit big, but she dresses nicely, has red hair, glasses and doesn’t look like a cartoon. Chagal looks like a hotel manager here, so...he’s in charge of the asylum? Does it mean, he is in direct communication with Krolock? Uh, this might make for some interesting change! Anyway, let’s see how this goes. So, Alfred and Abronsius stumble in and are taken care of. It is to note that Magda looks more like a nurse rather than a maid in this one. So...it IS an asylum for the mentally ill? I am SO confused. Anyway, Abronsius is woken up by something that looks like a very steaming liquid. And it must smell nice since he actively stretches out his nose. We also see some dark figure lurking in the upper floow...looks like a hotel page...uniform...strangely emo hair...and a hunchback? Is that Koukol? Yes, Koukol already features in Knoblauch here, where he is upstairs and runs away as soon as the two travellers arrive. Does it mean, he is already informing Krolock? That should be interesting. And then the dialogue happens...Abronsius asks “Is there a castle nearby?” Uuuuhm...you kinda JUST walked into the castle! Or perhaps he didn’t notice that this was the castle as it was dark and foggy...but I don’t know. And then Chagal says “No, no castle, nope, what are you talking about? We’re clearly in a castle but naaah, never heard of a CASTLE nearby, lol.” (He didn’t actually say that XD) Then we have the ONLY text change in the ENTIRE musical. The Dorftrottel says “But this place used to be a castle once.” Aaaaah, so Krolock renovated at least parts of his castle in order to build an asylum. Actually, the more you look into the scene, you can actually see vampires amongst the humans. You can point them out by their evil grins and white contact lenses, which I admit does look pretty good.

Bitte, meine Herren: Chagal leads them into their rooms. Ok, STOP! Is this a HOLIDAY asylum, therefore a hotel, or a MENTAL asylum? The word Sanatorium can be used in quite a few variations! Or is it a combination of both? I am SO confused! PLEASE EXPLAIN YOURSELF, MUSICAL! You already changed ONE LINE, it can’t be that hard to include some extra dialogue to match the modern setting! Anyway, Alfred and Abronsius get TWO beds now (wow, how nice of Chagal!) And this time, they sleep stage right, while Sarah’s bedroom is stage left. Ok, let us talk about Sarah’s bedroom, because there is quite a few things to mention. First of all, she has Marilyn Manson posters, along with things from (I think) Twilight and Vampire Diaries. And Sarah has considerably darker hair in this version...OH. MY. GOD. They have given Sarah the Bella Swan treatment! She KNOWS about the vampires and WANTS to be bitten by them! THAT IS...actually really smart. I mean, think about it! Krolock is using the vampire romance hype of the 21st century to get his victims. This makes it all the more easier for him! And it also perfectly parodies the whole “immortal love” aspect. But then there is the other aesthetic thing...WHY are the rooms so dirty? Seriously, the colour is coming off the walls, it looks like a toilet XD Maybe that’s the intention, but I remember the cosy wooden inn...yeah...that was nice.

Eine schöne Tochter: This one is actually pretty entertaining and is one of the best modern transitions of this version. Chagal not only uses a hammer to lock Sarah’s door, no, he also uses a drill! I really like that idea! Perfect inclusion of modern elements.

Nie geseh’n: This is where the entirety of the stage gets used. I actually quite like this scene as well. Chagal finds Magda on a sort of balcony, smoking a cigarette. Her “sewing” remark is treated as sarcasm here. That’s a nice creative way of getting around without changing the lyrics. Also, instead of a Salami, Rebecca uses her walking stick (yeah, she has one here) to beat the shit out of Abronsius and Chagal. What I also enjoy is that the Orchestra pit is incorporated, as in, the actors actually walk through it in order to get to some parts. But here is something I don’t enjoy: Ok, Rebecca has been given red hair in this production...WHY would you change Sarah’s hair then? Come on, you had THE opportunity to create more resemblance and you tossed it out of the window. Shame....Shame....Shame....ok, that’s enough Game of Thrones. Look at the Finnish version, they did it better with the resemblance!

Gott ist tot: Ok...where do I begin to describe how Krolock looks like in this one? He dramatically appears on the rooftop over Sarah’s bedroom and begins walking around on it...dressed in a very thick fur coat. Also, this Krolock looks much older than the one in the original version. But I actually quite like his hairstyle. It is not as wild, it is more civilised. He looks like you would expect a contemporary aristocrat to look like. However...the fur coat and the song make him look like an (and many people have said this before me) undead sugar daddy. And his seductive cat-like movements on the rooftop, followed by a 30-second creepy as fuck stare into Sarah’s window, watching her sleep (ehehe, Twilight, ehehe), don’t really help the case XD Overall, I think Krolock’s first appearance in this version is a bit underwhelming. Remember how in the original version, he glides through the audience, spends the first part of the song in darkness and casts a giant shadow over the entire stage? All of that is unfortunately missing and nothing really makes up for it. The Finnish version had dying couples singing the “Sei bereit...” around him while he was still covered in darkness, THAT is a way of making up for it. But here...no, I didn’t really feel it tbh.

Alles ist hell: One of the biggest changes so far. It takes place in a gym hall (huh, so it IS a hotel then, because I don’t see why a mental asylum should have such a fancy looking gym). Again, we have vampires as well as humans in the gym. Sarah is also allowed outside in this one...well, I hope she is only allowed outside inside the building where her parents can see her, otherwise Draußen ist Freiheit would loose a bit of its impact. And here we have the now second appearance of Koukol. I don’t know, I really hate his hairstyle here. He looks like an emo. But I like that the entire bargain for candles gets a bit more obscure with the modern setting. Why would someone order so many candles when they have electric lights? This leads to the belief that Krolock has only refurbished a certain part of the castle and himself dwells in an older one. Quite an interesting idea here.

Wahrheit: I actually really enjoyed this scene. Abronsius is younger here and they take full advantage of that. A lot of this song is sung on the stationary bicycles of the gym, with Abronsius drinking water, and also breathing into an inhalator...huh, I...guess, he has asthma here? But I appreciate the hard work the actors put in here. It can’t be easy to sing a song like this on bicycles! Also, I like that instead of the wood falling down, a lamp explodes when Abronsius does his high note here. But again, some of the script (”Und dabei schlüpft meine Säge durch Zieder”) would have been up for a change. But at least the Nobel prize makes sense in this context, I guess.

Du bist wirklich sehr nett: I can’t really say that much about this version because it nearly plays out the exact same way. The only difference is that Sarah walks through the orchestra pit to get to Alfred. But yeah, this isn’t one of the scenes where you can change that much.

Einladung zum Ball: Holy moly, THIS scene, however, is a totally different story! First of all, Krolock’s teleportation is grander here. He has two doubles this time, one high up stage left and one further lower stage right. The light shines on them without revealing Krolock’s face, which makes it really believable. However, we also have the stage direction where Sarah gets out of the bath, goes behind the set, in order to sit in a bigger bath in order for the scene to play out.  Krolock appears and delivers his invitation. The difference here is that Sarah isn’t frightened or shocked at all...she is happy. This Sarah REALLY wants to get bitten by Krolock. Also, she is actually naked in this one, and she even stands up, with her back facing the audience of course. Krolock quickly takes his fur coat and wraps it around Sarah, which looks quite hilarious actually. It looks like he’s saying “Sarah! This is not a PG15 show, and you are 17 for crying out loud! Here, have my coat and cover yourself!” He then walks away, leaving a magnificent impression on Sarah. We don’t actually see Chagal spanking her in this one, we just hear it. Oh, so we can have naked Sarah, but we can’t see her getting spanked? This show must have had a weeeird risk assessment XD

Draußen ist Freiheit: This version is totally different to the original What I find interesting is that Koukol actually opens the door so that Sarah can get out, which actually makes sense rather than her randomly being able to exit her house in the original version. But the real interesting thing is that Sarah in this version really seems to be annoyed with Alfred. It is so obvious that she wants to get away from him here.

Die roten Stiefel: This time it’s not just red boots but also a red corset. This is...interesting, but ok. And here is the part where I don’t like the look of the new vampires. In the original version, we had this magnificent dream sequence with red curtains and dance pairs. Here it is a bunch of people in leather clothes, pretty reminiscent of the Finale II vampires, which makes it look more dangerous, I’ll give them that, but also less dream-like. But there IS actually a good, even a great addition! This version has a Dream!Chagal coming out to fight Dream!Krolock over Dream!Sarah, which ensues in a battle with the two figures pulling her back and forth. THIS is something I would legitimately like to see in the original version!

Das Gebet: This scene, however...I did not like. In the original version, we have this entire inn, everyone holding candles, a moon shining, the Count standing on the rooftop, Sarah getting all emotional at the front. This version, however, looks like they were thinking “Well...we can’t cut it, so we need to have it somehow.” Everyone is praying in the centre, with Sarah further back and the Count is not even in it.

Trauer um Chagal: What is quite amusing here is that Chagal doesn’t really look that worried when he finds out that his daughter ran off. It actually looks like he’s being like “Oh come on! Seriously? Alright, let’s get her back.” He even drinks a bit of Vodka instead of eating Garlic, like he’s saying “Oh boy, will I have a chat with my boss now.” What follows next is the animation of a long and dark staircase...uhm...whooooooooo...gruuuuuhuhuuuuselig! And then we have one of the most unintentionally funny scenes in the show. Remember how I said that they didn’t change the lyrics? Well, okay, so all of the action, therefore, happens in a single building here. So WHY ON EARTH WOULD THE VILLAGE PEOPLE STILL INSIST THAT WOLVES WERE THE CULPRITS??? Is this a thing in Transylvania? Is it normal to find WOLVES strolling around INSIDE the building? Come on, this is a direct insult to Abronsius’ intelligence here. Also, the vampires among the people really act out their diabolical nature here as they really smirk and smile at the dead Chagal. Then we have this other thing...Chagal seemingly serves Krolock here...so why would Krolock kill him if he wants to bring back his daughter? I mean, I guess he could have found a replacement...but oh well, I’m getting too deep into this. Next scene!

Tot zu sein ist komisch: This is where Magda’s dark side is shown. Why? Because she LAUGHS when she sees Chagal’s dead body. Wow, that woman must have REALLY hated him. I mean, understandably so, but JESUS! And she doesn’t really seem that terrified when she’s bitten. I guess her working for a vampire Count makes her mentally prepared for what is to come eventually. She uses a bible instead of a cross against Chagal. And then...the next best unintentionally funny scene happens. And to this day I STILL don’t know what the creative decision behind that was. Okay, so we have Abronsius and Alfred wanting to impale Chagal, which leads to the chase sequence...only here it is accompanied by disco party lights. WHAT was that for? XD WHY did they do that? XD It’s so hilarious XD “UUuuh, yeaaaah, da vamp’s in da houseeeee, yeessssss!” 

Durch die Wildnis zum Schloss: Right, cancel the “Wildnis” part, because nobody is going outside here. And again...”Bestimmt entdecken wir durch ihn das Schloss von diesem Grafen!” YOU ARE IN THE CASTLE, FOR GOD’S SAKE! Jesus Christ, they really should have changed the lyrics because this makes them look like absolute idiots now XD And then the travel sequence comes. I don’t know why, but I had a desire to burst out laughing during this. It shows empty rooms that clearly belong in a mental asylum (SO WHAT IS IT NOW, A HOTEL OR AN ASYLUM??? MAKE UP YOUR MIND, SHOW!) The funny thing is that it has a slow-motion sequence of a black figure running into the distance. I don’t know why, but this really made me laugh so much XD

Vor dem Schloss: Or in this case “In an older part of the castle”. We obviously get the vampires in the audience. They just don’t seem as creepy because of their leather clothes. Then Krolock comes in, wearing a shiny grey suit. Krolock and the amazing shining grey suit! XD Actually, I do admit that this scene is pretty well done. Krolock clearly is annoyed by Abronsius and CONSTANTLY stares at Alfred. When they have their moment together at the end, Krolock grabs his shoulders and stares him right into the soul. Overall, the contact between Krolock and Alfred is done much better here than in the original version, so props to them for this one. But again...please change the script occasionally. Königsberg is no longer the name of the city Abronsius comes from. It’s Kaliningrad now. Yeah... And Herbert...wow, Herbert looks great XD He has this purple suit and long open hair, which make him look like Legolas visiting a gay bar. And then we finally get to see Krolock’s shadow! Hooraaay! He walks up the stairs before the curtain comes down, stretches out his arms, and a giant shadow comes up, opening all of the castle windows. That was quite neat as well. Also, I love how he gets a short moment where he opens Abronsius’ back, sees what’s inside it and nods like he’s saying “I have work to do.”

So, overall, Act 1 wasn’t bad but it wasn’t that overwhelmingly great either. I will see you all in Act 2 which will follow soon enough :D
