Okay. So IK I’ve been a touch inactive (GCSEs are KILLING me rn) BUT. I have a Theory. (This may or may not have originated in my comments on a fic, so credits to @midnights-dragon) ANYWAYS. Here goes:

It’s pretty fucking obvious that Aziraphale and Crowley are borderline OBSESSED with forgiving each other/gaining each other’s forgiveness, but I think that might be something a little bit deeper. They’ve both been, for thousands of years, in the most insanely TOXIC environments, right? Crowley was cast out from Heaven and has since lived in fear of Hell, and Aziraphale has spent his whole existence trying and failing to live up to Heaven’s IMPOSSIBLE standards, so. Neither of them are gonna have the BEST possible self-esteem, okay? (Stay with me, I promise I’m getting to the point)

So since they’ve both experienced so LITTLE forgiveness in their existences, it makes SENSE that they’d be amazed by the readiness with which they forgive each other, right? Obviously that, but my personal Theory is that forgiveness isn’t actually what they want; it’s unconditional love.

By asking for forgiveness, they’re both constantly saying ‘forgive my flaws, and love me despite them’- because neither of them believe their flaws and faults are WORTHY of being loved. I think that, if they were completely honest, they’d ask instead ‘see my flaws, and love me because of them’. I think that, when they’re asking to be forgiven, that’s not really what they want; I think all they really want is the love they’re too afraid to ask for.

i had a dream that my chemical romance and starkid had a joint concert where people from starkid would try and sing mcr songs while ppl from mcr would sing starkid songs. cant say anything about the quality of their singing bc this happened bc my alarm is na na na and it was just gerard singing it. i also think a few ppl ik irl would sing songs that dont match their vibe either.

im sure im the 10000th person to say this but the key to getting ttpd for me was realizing that joe and matty BOTH felt like the loves & losses of her life. like, joe and matty were both people she viewed as basically SAVING her. nothing in the way she writes about matty sound like she saw him as a getaway car. she was all in! she was in love! like imagine ur her. the guy you kind of dated when you were 25 is someone you become very emotionally close with in the last months of your long term relationship coming apart. you have lots of mutual friends and an established level of trust and compatibility. maybe you always still thought he was kind of hot. doesnt it make sense that maybe this was ACTUALLY what joe was leading to? hell was the journey but maybe NOW it's bringing you heaven? doesn't that undercut the sunk cost fallacy? especially if your ex's integrity always made you feel small but THIS guy never felt like he was above you because you're both messy and crazy? and maybe he even needs YOU to fix him instead of vice versa? it was star crossed! it was a slow burn! the bad boy from your past comes back a decade later to save you from your dead end relationship and sweep you off your feet!

and that's why you get songs like loml and but daddy i love him written about a 3-month relationship. this isn't a case of matty being a getaway car. she was heartbroken twice, by two people she saw as being it for her, who came to her when she most needed them and "saved her life."
