root cause analysis 👀👀👀
ty for the ask! wip list is here
root cause analysis is a continuation of indicators of compromise, detailing how valentine handles some of the phantom liberty DLC in an au that will not be ending happily (if I ever get to finishing it). I just love Alex and how I feel like we never truly get to get inside her head, which makes her a fun POV character to write. also valentine is being a real sulky pain in the ass, which she doesn't get to do often enough.
Alex makes it in a cool twelve, just long enough to change but not enough for a shower. The coords V’s given her are in the stacks, not far from where she and Reed had spent all morning. It’s a juvenile insult– here I am, right next to you and you didn’t even notice. She knocks on a shack door near the outskirts, listening to thumping music from some partially blown speaker inside. The woman who answers the door is so blasted she can barely stand straight, and she blinks at Alex for several seconds before waving her inside, where the smoke is so thick it’s hard to breathe. The music echoes off the metal walls so that it’s more of a constant, pulsating noise, like the inside of a headache. There’s less than a handful of people here, all of them in various stages of come-down, and none of them are V. She curses under her breath and heads back out the way she came, past the same woman who stares at her without recognition or comprehension. Alex does a cursory search of the nearby area, without success, but her suspicions are confirmed when she returns to the Moth to find V already inside. She locks the door behind her and flicks on the lights, briefly checking on the bot only to find her disabled. All the cameras and microphones in the bar have been taken offline. When she’s finished a quick sweep of the floor she approaches the booth where V is slouched next to an open bottle of tequila, an unlit cigarette in hand.

They were probably never intended to do that because of design, capabilities, or history, so something about that situation is an indication of compromise

Claiming that communications about system design flaws or vulnerabilities are actually accusations related to serious crimes committed by important people so that those communications can be disregarded as though intending to unjustly accuse a high ranking person of a serious crime to induce a scandal or create other effects in a government

Both of these were fun!
Chat Blanc was definitely my favorite to draw (I always struggle a bit when drawing carapace's design), but both turned out very nice indeed!

"Angry robin" "violent robin" "misbehaving robin" shut up and accept my alternative; spunky Robin. Determined and head strong, can out-stubborn the Batman, has a strong moral-backbone and does what he thinks is right regardless of what anybody else says, Robin. Jason who was sassy and quippy and made crude jokes with a smile on his face. Jason who hid in Bruce's cape and whispered gossip to him. Jason who, if Bruce refused him something, could keep bothering endlessly until Bruce caved. And also dramatic Jason. If Bruce tells him no, it becomes a whole theatrical show; a monologue, a narration, embellishments, and falling onto the floor in his grief upon the fact his cruel father has denied him once again.
(Jason who has suffered through abuse and homelessness and poverty and starvation, who is the Fight out of Fight or Flight, who's built up defenses and walls and when pushed and triggered responds with the thing that's always protected him; anger. He's sweet and kind and funny, and when he sees a pimp hitting a prostitute he gets furious and responds with violence.)
#my dc posting#dc#jason todd#jaybin#im having so many thoughts abt jaybin and he is so important to me#in one fic he went on a hunger strike bc alfred didnt eat w them and did it for so long they had to compromise#i love a jaybin 100% willing to menace and bother batman until the man folds. as is his right#the thing abt jason's backstory is that it shows him unwilling to suffer for a home#ma gunn's is bad; he gets beat up and she tries to get him to help rob a place. so he leaves! and rats the whole thing out to batman#and shows up himself cus he didnt think he had been believed#and lets not forget the fact he hit batman with a tire iron and called him a 'big boob'!#the boy's got moxie!! let jaybin be crass and angry and sassy and flawed and traumatized without reducing him to 2d caricature of a 'troubl#d kid'#i dont like a jason who did nothing but use excessive violence and disobey orders and be cocky and all that shit#i like a jason who was. oh yknow. a complex person!! a child/teen who has been fucking abused!!!#you shouldnt erase the fact that jason's reaction/response to stressful situations and triggers IS anger#it's not an indication that he was always gonna become a criminal/red hood or whatever. get outta here w that shit#but like. let us not go so far in the other direction we forget to have him react and be affected by the abuse he's suffered#anyway. if anyone should be a drama-queen it should be jaybin. once he becomes truly comfortable w bruce he should dial it up to 11#a lot of red hood's appeal (to me&many others) is that he is an 'imperfect' victim. meaning he is angry and flawed and doesnt suffer quietl#but is loud and obvious abt it#so when i see jaybin written as the opposite its like. man whats that about#anyway. jaybin is good and cares and wants to help and protect people. and by god if i ever see anybody writing#him having arguments with bruce about the no kill rule WHILE robin again im gonna throw hands istg-#my tags are like a hidden treasure box. most of what i say is in here lmao

studying Philosophy is really like
you think this is going to help you understand the world and your place in it better,
but actually all it does is confuse and befuddle you farther than ever before
and also you make friends with the most annoying (read: great, smart, lovely, kind, but argumentative as ALL GET OUT) people in the world and then you realize you've BECOME one of those people and you kind of want to just curl up in a nice quiet little hole in the ground with all your books and read and think until a complete and total understanding of the world falls out of your noggin and everything makes sense; but actually you just want to take a walk in the woods with a friend and not think about anything for at least a year.
#I have a paper due on the philosophy of math#at 8 AM TOMORROW#and my brain is NOT WORKING#and I really want to go cry for a while#but that's not really going to fix anything at all is it#on a related note if y'all want to pray for me... my emotions have returned and they really just want to process everything that's#happened for approximately my entire life at one time. and it's kind of hard to do all the things I think I should be doing right now#when that's going on#also thinking too much about trying to love people well and what that means and how bad at it I've been and it's hard not to get stuck ther#when there's basically nothing I can change anyway#(need to have an awkward convo with someone soon... for my sake probably more than theirs#I fear I haven't loved them well and it matters to me to know that our friendship hasn't been compromised#but unfortunately it's also strike one) a boy and strike two) a boy I like#and unfortunately he figured it out and I have a pretty good indication that he doesn't like me back. and I can't tell if he's interested i#a mutual friend#and I am AwkwardTM and trying not to let it bother me. but Fake It Till You Make It#(my philosophy since getting to college)#isn't really going that well for me in this case.#and I think an honest conversation would be the best thing for everyone... except I'm kinda terrified of that lol :') and I want to serve#him well not just serve my own emotions and need for validation)#prayers would be appreciated#that I will love others as they are meant to be loved and not just as I want to love them#or as my selfish emotions and desires think I want to love them#and that I'll be able to know when something needs to be said and when nothing at all is the best option for everyone#God sees and knows. and He loves me. and that is so /so/ hard to believe sometimes but I try to hold onto it with everything I have lately.#gurt says stuff#college stuff#philosophy#one day I'll look back and laugh at undergraduate me#personal tags

whenever people say that satine made a huge critical mistake/moral failure by not "compromising" with militant mandalorians i wonder if i was the only person who heard satine say the words "even extremists can be reasoned with" or "concordia is under independent rule and we need to talk to the governor" or "there was a time we weren't enemies, perhaps that time has come again" or "there will be no bloodshed" when she literally surrenders to death watch (a terrorist group btw) because she knows she's lost popular support to them
idk i think there's sort of a satine horseshoe theory going on where people who hate her and people who Nuance Like(TM) her both have selective amnesia about how compassionate, observant, and willing to compromise satine actually is so they can paint her as either a genocidal dictator or an overly-idealistic stubborn bitch #GirlBoss with good intentions and in the end they're 3 centimeters away from each other in terms of how rancid i find their opinion to be

i guess i'm just mostly driven by that interest in where the absurd and the sublime are the same thing. I like things that are ridiculous but magnificent at the same time, and that are unashamed in their intensity, that aren't trying to be clever or prove a point. It just *is*, and is what it is, and combining that honesty with a lens that acknowledges the ridiculousness of existence and being and yet the magnificence of persistance, that's what gets to me

I already posted a snippet but I'm happy to do another one.
Alex isn’t much of a psychopomp. She’s got her own shit to deal with. But every night this week she’s dreamed about standing on a beach with her toes in the warm, clean sand. Her transfer request is already approved. The FIA would have agreed to give her a pony, if she’d asked. So Mi has them scared shitless. “Alright enough of that drinking from the bottle,” Alex says, pulling the tequila away from V. “Still my bar, and that means I pour the drinks.” “Yes ma’am,” V mutters, and despite herself Alex laughs. She throws V a jaunty two-finger salute and the gesture earns her a crooked little smile, one which hooks itself into her chest. She plays it back in her head as she pulls out a pair of glasses. It makes her think of Reed, even though Reed rarely smiles without the right environment, a lot of coaxing, and at least two shots.

The bed we’re staying on at my betrotheds dads house is. Quite bad. But the worst part is he put a new mattress on an old box spring and it’s so fucking squeaky. Every time we move at night there’s an unholy shrieking of tortured wood begging to be freed of its duty on this mortal coil.
I suggested to my betrothed that we just pick the mattress up and put it on the floor to sleep instead.
“Like, in secret? I don’t want them to know...”
“Of course in secret! Are you crazy? Yes!”
Time for plan: Secret Floor Mattress.

some important calvin and hobbes facts in case you haven't read the original comic strip in a long time or only absorbed stuff on it from memes and out of context bits on here:
Calvin's last name has never been given, and neither has any of his parent's names. This was actually why his uncle Max only showed up for a brief storyline; the creator of the comic, Bill Watterson, ultimately felt that while it was fine to have him as someone for his parents to talk to, it felt far too awkward to never have Max refer to them by name and he never made a return appearance.
The general tone of the comic is fairly light-hearted, with a big emphasis on goofy slapstick comedy contrasted by clever wordplay and often surprising adult-centered jokes that'll hit you like a slap. A big part of the comedy is, as Watterson put it (paraphrased) "It's really funny to me when people express deeply stupid ideas with really fancy terminology." One notable example you might have seen is that one bit where Calvin asks his mom for money to buy a Satan-worshiping rock album and his mom replies that there's nothing genuine about them and they're just putting on the attitude for shock value, and comisserates with Calvin as he deplores that mainstream nihilism can't be trusted. He concludes that childhood is disillusioning.
There is a LOT of criticism of the extreme materialism and selfish mentality of the late 80s, when the comic was initially written. This may go a long way to explain how its aged so well; much of what it criticizes resonates well with people today.
Bill Watterson views comic strips a legitimate form of artwork, and repeatedly fought to have more space to draw more beautiful and artistic backgrounds, which was a very hard fight and unpopular even with other comic strip artists. He eventually did win some compromises and a lot of Calvin And Hobbes' artwork shows it, with the use of space to indicate time as well as a sharp contrast between the often plain environments of mundane life contrasted by the wildly beautiful imagery of Calvin's imagination (which often sports realistic depictions in an art shift of sorts).
Hobbes is explicitly not an imaginary friend, by word of Watterson himself. We don't know WHAT he is exactly, and Hobbes is apparently unaware of the strange nature of his reality; people look at him and only see an ordinary stuffed tiger plushie, but he has a tangible effect on the world that would be physically impossible for Calvin to do on his own. He's apparently been around for a while, and was apparently around when Calvin was a young baby.
On that note; Hobbes has implicitly killed (notably treated as both a gag and also with the vibe of 'he's a tiger, duh') and while he doesn't do it again on-screen, he doesn't have any moral issues about it. Calvin claims that he's never had trouble bringing Hobbes to school because the last time he did, Hobbes killed and ate a bully named Tommy Chestnut and simply comments that it was gross and he needed a bath. Calvin's tried to repeat this again, but Hobbes was grossed out at the thought having to eat a kid raw and not being allowed to use an oven first, or complaining that children are too fattening.
Hobbes became gradually less human-like in body language and more like an actual cat in both body language and behavior; this was due to Watterson drawing more inspiration from his cat, who also inspired a lot of Hobbes' running gags, such as pouncing on Calvin when he got home. Several years into the syndication of the strip, Watterson's cat passed away, and he did a tribute to her with a comic strip of the two of them agreeing to try to dream together so they can keep playing when they have to sleep; Watterson's commentary (if I recall right), remarks on his cat: "We can see each other again in dreams."

heianera!sukuna observed you in your chair, reading a book, engrossed in a world of your own. You spent most of your time nestled in the arm chair by the fire, waiting patiently for whenever Sukuna would call you over in need of service.
Oddly, you didn’t miss the kitchen, most of the time Sukuna was no issue, his commands simple, and he was never violent. All in all, he was a pretty good employer and you were happy.
“Pet.” Your head lifted without hesitation, your book softly falling closed. “Yes, my lord.”
“Come rub my back.”
You froze, perplexed by his ask. Surely one of his concubines would be better suited for such a task, but who were you to question a King? After all, Sukuna always knew what he wanted.
“Rub your back, my lord?”
“Yes. I have new oils I wish to try.”
Setting your book aside, you stood, the ruffles of your work skirt swishing around your thighs. Sukuna licked his lips at the sight. He loved your uniform more than anything in his palace, forever making you look like a sweet treat.
Settling by his bed, you stood awaiting further instruction.
“Undress me, little one.” If you had seen Sukuna around the other servants you’d know he didn’t have pet names for them, not even his concubines, it marked you as special, and you didn’t even know it.
With slightly shaky hands, you removed his kimono, neatly folding it and placing it off to the side. Even with all of his muscles bare, you were polite and didn’t stare, as, after all, that wasn’t part of your job.
Sukuna frowned at the sight.
Maybe you’d be harder to tease than he thought.
Adjusting himself so he was led on his stomach, he nodded his head, indicating to his back. “Sit, pet. The oils are on the bedside stand.”
“Do you have a preference, my lord?”
“Whichever you choose is fine, little one.”
Deciding on a random bottle, you crawled onto the bed, sitting by his side, preparing to unscrew the cap. Sukuna tutted playfully, drawing your attention.
“My lord?”
“How do you suppose you can give me a massage properly from the side?” He quirked a brow and your lips parted, but words didn’t find you.
“Sit, pet.” And this time you understood perfectly what he meant.
Slow in your movements, you kicked your leg over him and straddled his lower back, saddled on the natural dip of his spine, your sex right over Sukuna’s muscles. Your mind didn’t go to such a place, but the Kings did.
Oiling up your hands, you set out on your task, finding it a little odd but not speaking up, knowing your place. Plus, a slightly compromised position or not this was a professional craft for many and it didn’t always entail such lewd endings.
Sukuna had other ideas.
Every time you worked a certain muscle he let out low, drawn out moans, praising you for a job well done. It brought the lightest flush to your cheeks because anyone could walk in and get the wrong idea about all of this.
Seeing the pink on your cheeks, Sukuna decided it was time for step 2. Flexing his back muscles, he watched from the corner of two eyes as you stilled, confused and utterly adorable in it.
You were questioning yourself. Had you made it up? Had the King done something? Had you done something?
Sukuna didn’t comment.
And then he did it again.
This time you were certain he had moved, you’d been still as a statue since your mind had decided to play tricks on you. What was his angle?
Deciding it was better to end this massage sooner rather than later, you put the last of the oil on your hands and made haste.
Knowing what you were up to, Sukuna upped his game, shifting his hips up off the mattress and grinding back against you, earning him the smallest hitch of your breath.
You were definitely getting worked up by his antics. Brilliant, a few more shifts of his hips and you should be-
“There you are my lord. Hopefully the oil is to your liking. Call me if you need anything else.”
Sukuna growled. You had climbed off him, having finished the massage far quicker than he would have liked. But the King was not to easy to give up, he was already plotting how he could have you soaking those white panties again soon.
You were destined to be his, for better or for worse.
