"That said, both Styles and his therapist have questioned why he cares quite so much about being likeable. This is one of the things he thought about a lot in his big pandemic reflection. In part, it's a choice, he explained. He recalled moving to London after The X Factor and hearing tales of petulant celebrities screaming because someone got their coffee order wrong and deciding to never be that guy, to never give someone a petty reason to bad-mouth him. But more recently he's come to worry that the drive for approval came from a more complex place, a place of caution, fear, control." "Styles said he often spent interviews terrified about saying the wrong thing until he stopped to question what abhorrent belief or bizarre opinion he was scared he'd accidentally reveal and realized he couldn't think of anything."
"And he thought about the cleanliness clauses in the contracts he used to sign, which would dictate that they would be null and void if he did anything supposedly unsavoury, and about how terrified that used to make him. And about when he signed his solo contract and learned that the ability to make music would not be affected by personal transgressions, he burst into tears, a reaction he still seemed shocked by, retelling it to me now, years later. "I felt free," he explained."
"When Styles began therapy about five years ago [so in 2017], he was reluctant initially, feeling it was a music industry cliché. "I thought it meant that you were broken," he said. "I wanted to be the one who could say I didn't need it." He returned to the home theme that has underpinned our conversation, explaining that therapy has allowed him to "open up rooms in himself" that he didn't know existed, allowed him to feel things more honestly, where before he had tended to"emotionally coast.""
"Recently Styles began to work through issues related to intimacy, dating, love. "For a long time, it felt like the only thing that was mine was my sex life. I felt so ashamed about it, ashamed at the idea of people even knowing that I was having sex, let alone who with," he said."
"You look back, especially now there's all the documentaries, like the Britney documentary, and you watch how people were abused in that way, by that system, especially women. You recall articles from not even five years ago, and you're like, I can't even believe that was written."
He has been thinking a lot recently about autonomy, ownership, privacy. About what he should be able to keep to himself, what he should be able to simply communicate through his music without follow-up questions or prying. Around the time of Fine Line, he faced scrutiny around his sexuality. People became incredulous that he wore dresses, waved Pride flags, and yet hadn't clarified with precision, publicly to a journalist or on social media, the specifics of who he'd slept with, how he defined. This expectation is, to him, bizarre, "outdated." "I've been really open with it with my friends, but that's my personal experience; it's mine," he said.
Despite the acceptance that some things could, should, have been different, he still feels lucky every day, he said, lucky to make music, lucky to do what he loves.
"You can't win music. It's not like Formula One," he said. "I was like, in my lifetime, there will be 10 more people who burst onto the scene in that way, and I'm only going to get further away from being the young thing. So, get comfortable with finding something else that makes you happy. I just found that so liberating."
"I just want to make stuff that is right, that is fun, in terms of the process, that I can be proud of for a long time, that my friends can be proud of, that my family can be proud of, that my kids will be proud of one day," he said.

“the class commentary in saltburn was shit” WHAT CLASS COMMENTARY???? NOT EVERY MOVIE WITH RICH PEOPLE HAS TO OR SHOULD HAVE CLASS COMMENTARY. EMERALD FENNELL KNOWS VERY WELL THAT SHE IS NOT THE RIGHT DIRECTOR FOR A MOVIE ABOUT CLASS COMMENTARY WHICH IS WHY SHE DID NOT WRITE A MOVIE ABOUT CLASS COMMENTARY.
#saltburn posting#saltburn#begging everyone who is complaining about the ‘message’ of saltburn to watch ANY interview with emerald#when you see her attention to detail and hear the way she talks about these characters#you will understand that this is a movie about obsession#and the cattons being rich heightens this for sure and pushes oliver into an uncomfortable position#in the exact same way that it pushes farleigh into an uncomfortable position#they will grant you help as long as you don’t ask for it#desires are messy and ugly so it’s better to just not have them#these ideas are absolutely a result of the catton’s wealth and status#but as far as the plot goes#their wealth is just a narrative tool to push these ideas about beauty and obsession#watch the cufflinks scene again and really think about it#think about venetia and what she wanted and farleigh and what he wanted#and all of the desires that are left unspoken at saltburn#and the desire to BE DESIRED#think about all of this and try to tell me that this is a movie about material gain

A PERFECT CIRCLE — PASSIVE
Passive is a song that went through numerous controversies but still managed to carve its own unique path in A Perfect Circle’s discography, also making a strong appearance in the film Constantine (2005). Featured on the album eMOTIVe (2004), Passive is essentially a remake of the song Vacant, originally created by Tapeworm — a project founded by Trent Reznor himself.

«One of the recordings of the old "Vacant" performed by Maynard»
The reason you’ve most likely never heard of Tapeworm is quite simple: the project never officially released anything, despite numerous mentions in the press. Originally, Tapeworm was conceived as a side project by Nine Inch Nails, but over time it evolved into a collective featuring several other musicians (such as Maynard James Keenan — Tool’s frontman — as well as Danny Lohner and Atticus Ross). In 2004, Reznor disbanded the project, citing label complications and a growing lack of interest from the group itself.

— « Maynard Keenan, Danny Lohner, Atticus Ross, Trent Reznor »

During one of his concerts, Maynard suddenly performed Vacant — a song for which he wrote the lyrics back in 1999, while Trent Reznor contributed the chorus and backing vocals (that's why many still credit him as a co-writer). The music was composed by Danny Lohner, and Charlie Clouser was in charge of the mix — both were closely connected to Nine Inch Nails at the time.
Interestingly, Reznor originally did not approve of Vacant’s performance and was annoyed by Maynard’s decision (though their conflict eventually blew over, and the friends reconciled). During its transformation into Passive, the song found a new life and a unique voice within A Perfect Circle’s repertoire.

youtube
— «Trent Reznor about Maynard and Tapeworm»

(for those who don't want to watch, there is text below)
In his recollections of the project, Reznor says:

“The question that sticks with me. One of those things I was talking about years ago. Tapeworm — just to clear things up, I’ve already started to forget what it was — but I’m sure I came to realize that everything I was trying to do was a waste of time, because back then I was afraid to write new Nine Inch Nails albums, so I kept myself busy with side projects while I was living in New Orleans. I felt busy, but without much pressure in what I was doing. Maynard and I became friends over the years and tried to work together on this project, which also involved Danny Lohner and Atticus Ross. We tried to create a kind of democracy and see what we could come up with together.>> Maynard and I successfully did our respective things (Tool and Nine Inch Nails). But the final result was honestly just mediocre. I think it was due to a lack of focus and the commercial pressures that directly influenced us. Not from each of us individually, but from the overall climate at the time — it was the late nineties — when record labels put pressure on you to produce what I previously hinted at. If you tried to promote your record on the radio, you suddenly lost a ton of opportunities if it didn't make it there.>> It’s not just a matter of money, but a range of pressures that can affect many people. The music we made, and that we presented under the name Tapeworm, just never really went that far — it kind of fell into a similar groove. When you combine Tool and NIN, it’s supposed to be a 10 out of 10, not a 7. And I couldn’t shake the feeling that we kept landing at 7, which is ultimately why I decided to let it go. So there’s really not much to learn from it. I love Maynard — he’s a good friend — and I’m sure we’ll try to do something together again that’s truly a 10 out of 10.”

— Finally, we come to that very scene in the movie where Passive is playing.

youtube
Director Francis Lawrence carefully crafted the film’s soundscape, aiming to immerse the viewer in a supernatural, gothic world tinged with despair. Passive fit perfectly into this aesthetic.
The official music video for Passive also included footage from Constantine, adding a special atmosphere to the song.
In the film, the track plays during the scene where John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) enters Papa Midnight’s nightclub (played by Djimon Hounsou) to gather information about a demon invasion into the human world. The music serves as a background, blending seamlessly with the dark, ominous visuals, making the scene’s immersion absolutely spot on!
— Thank you for your attention and time!

"Of course, in the United States of America, in England and also in France, there are aggressive powers that long for a new war. They need war to achieve super-profits and to plunder other countries. These are the billionaires and millionaires that regard war as a fountain of revenue, that brings colossal profits. They, the aggressive powers, hold the reactionary governments in their hands and guide them. But at the same time they are afraid of their people who do not want a new war and are for the keeping of peace. Therefore they take the trouble of using the reactionary governments to ensnare their people with lies, to deceive them, to represent a new war as a war of defence, and the peaceful politics of peace-loving countries as aggressive. They take the trouble to deceive the people, to force them and draw them into a new war with their aggressive plans."
J.V. Stalin, 1951, Interview with a Pravda correspondent
#read the whole interview its very short but gives some insight into the new developing world order after ww2#and a lot of what is being said in there is still very relevant today#specifically the criticism of the UN as a tool to legitimize american imperialism as well as what he says about taiwan

do yall think madeleine is going to feel guilty when she and claudia are sentenced to death/about to be killed because she was the one that suggested they go see louis one last time, or do you think they were always doomed to die because armand was going to have them killed regardless of whether or not they went to see louis again. im flinging myself off a building btw.
#like....were they always doomed by the narrative? or would they have been safe if they'd just gotten far enough away from paris?#and if the theater couldn't have their grand tribunal would they have simply targeted (just) louis instead despite whatever armand wanted?#or would they have used louis as a tool to get claudia and madeleine back to kill them as well??#sometimes i wonder if there was any way things could've turned out differently or if they were doomed from the moment claudia poisoned tom#maybe even before then#iwtv#interview with the vampire#iwtv spoilers#louis de pointe du lac#claudia iwtv#madeleine iwtv#armand iwtv#lestat de lioncourt

So Louis takes up photography and he gives a plethora of reasons as to why he's chosen it as a hobby. But then he's on a date with Armand and he's seeing Lestat there. And so he takes the camera and looks through the lens, just to make sure that Lestat isn't there. Because his mind can betray him but the photos do not, and the photos confirm that there's no one. And that Lestat is just in his head.
So when Louis says 'I walk the night capturing disappointment and regret', he's also in a way talking about himself. Because every time he takes a photo and Lestat isn't there, he's filled with disappointment and regret. He's grieving Lestat and he misses him. He sees him everywhere and it's not real. It's never real even if he wants him to be. And back in the present day he's still grieving Lestat. That's decades worth of grief.
Lestat says that he has a capacity for enduring. But I think that applies to Louis too. All that pain and loss and grief and trauma, and Louis still carries it all. And I think this makes Louis one of the strongest vampire out there because anybody weak would've crumbled from the weight of it all.

Heya friend, I wanted to ask you since you have an encyclopedic knowledge of the band: there was a journalist who was trying to get an interview with the band and got a rejection email with a line about "finding the answers within" himself. Do you remember when that was from?
Hi Neta 🖤 I do remember! But I want to thank @thesleeptokenarchive for helping me dig the mention up (I would have spent a couple days looking if not for the curator). It’s from a 2017 Facebook post from Empire Music, right around the time the Two EP was released.
#asks#sleepanon answers#sleep token#sleep token interview#i wonder what was asked that made vessel say no 🤔#but also he must have fanboyed over the tool comparison lol#i'm glad the “music is the most important” sentiment has been around for so long tho
