That french show "j'irai dormir chez vous- Algérie" received so much (negative) attention, when they posted the teaser it was already the most number of views the show had gotten, but a lot of people expressed their deception after watching the whole thing and many speculated the episode was made specifically to tarnish Dzayer's image.
Antoine had been to Kabylie and Ghardaïa , hadn't met police there, when he went to our Sahara close to the borders he was asked to have a local guide, he refused so instead of kicking him out, the police proposed that a civil followed him from afar to ensure his safety , he did not refuse, he then wanted to get a permission to adventure outside of the city that was refused.
The security agents had all been dressed in civil and calmly talked to him, they shouldn't have been filmed yet he filmed them, they explained that they weren't worried about the city or its lovely people, that it was safe but they wanted to be extra safe, the country is just opening up to tourism and receiving so much hate, it also has troubled borders, so while it is safe tourists (even Algerian) need to be accompagnied with a guide in the Sahara, a lost or dead journalist would not do good to the country's image.
With all that in mind, Antoine really said: oh i get it now you want to keep me safe to give Algeria a good image, no problem i'll give you a completely different reason to worry. And it become a subject of trends between all those journalists outside who has a job to criticize everything relateed to the country, they need to earn money after all.
All of this doesn't bother me, French ppl who come here have the tendency to bring out the worst in us, we are used to it, the police should have been more subtle or told him off right off the bat, altho you do imagine that they'd still be criticied no matter what (if they didn't care and something bad happened , if they were more stern, or laid back) But the realiy is that this whole fuss is made because a white man ws stopped in a third world country.
It's easy to reverse the situation, if i, an Algerian had been to France to film an emission and the police stopped me from going to a certain place alone, worried about my safety, and filmed it, i would be the one criticized for being irresponsible for not cooperating. But when a white man does it, he he is denouncing corruption and toxic behavior , while he sounds objectively completely insane (not to mention offensive with his offhanded comments on M'zab women and the Kabylie status) Even though we all know how are people can be treated aboard, it is always assumed it is our fault, but never the fault of the more responsible white man on backwarded countries.
Also just one thing, the security wasn't aware he was a jornalist at first and Algerians are also stopped when they want to wonder alone in the desert, it doesn't have to do with nationality, although yes french channels are usually kept abay, it doesn't have to do with colonialism as much as their more recent behavior . Also there has been a case of a european tourist dying in the desert last year, i assume security was blamed then.
(sorry for info dumping ;-; the previous anon made me think, i didn't know where to put this)
The first time I wandered alone in the Sahara with my grandparents we wanted to cross the border with Mali, we had the paperwork and all but the border agents said no. They said only my grandpa could cross the border but not my grandma or me. The feminist inside me got angry and then the border agent was like “My sister, the Malian authorities told us there was potential terrorists near the border and that it wasn’t safe for women right now that you could get kidnapped. So sit down I’m not letting you cross the border.” The feminist inside me immediately calmed down 😂
But yeah all of that to say that if he was in the Sahara it 100% makes sense that the authorities were watching over him. Some places are protected too and only Kel Tamasheq/Touareg can go there. There’s also the area around Tindouf and the border with Western Sahara…
Anyway thank you for all the informations!!

Biden signs order that allows Nigerians to receive vaccines in US
President Joe Biden on Monday signed an order that allows non-tourist travellers from Nigeria and 49 other countries to receive vaccines on arriving in the United States.
According to the proclamation, non-tourist travelers from nearly 50 countries with nationwide vaccination rates of less than 10% will also be eligible for exemption from the rules.
Those receiving an exemption will generally need to be vaccinated within 60 days after arriving in the United States.
Those countries include Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Armenia, Myanmar, Iraq, Nicaragua, Senegal, Uganda, Libya, Ethiopia, Zambia, Congo, Kenya, Yemen, Haiti, Chad and Madagascar.
The White House first disclosed on Sept. 20 it would remove restrictions in early November for fully vaccinated air travelers from 33 countries.
“Families and friends can see each other again, tourists can visit our amazing landmarks. This policy will further boost economic recovery,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
The Biden administration also detailed requirements airlines must follow to confirm foreign travelers have been vaccinated before boarding US-bound flights.
One concern among U.S. officials and airlines is making sure foreign travelers are aware of the new vaccine rules that will take effect in just two weeks as well unvaccinated Americans who will face stricter testing rules.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued on Monday new contact tracing rules requiring airlines to collect information from international air passengers like phone numbers, email and US addresses and retain it for 30 days in case it needed “to follow up with travelers who have been exposed to COVID-19 variants or other pathogens.”
The CDC said this month it would accept any vaccine authorized for use by US regulators or the World Health Organization and will accept mixed-dose coronavirus vaccines from travelers.
That list leaves off the Sputnik vaccine that has been used by Latin American countries extensively.
Also on Monday Biden signed an order imposing new vaccine requirements for most foreign national air travelers and lifting severe travel restrictions on China, India and much of Europe effective November 8, the White House said.
“It is in the interests of the United States to move away from the country-by-country restrictions previously applied during the COVID-19 pandemic and to adopt an air travel policy that relies primarily on vaccination to advance the safe resumption of international air travel to the United States,” Biden’s proclamation says.
The extraordinary US travel restrictions were first imposed in early 2020 to address the spread of COVID-19. The rules bar most non-US citizens who within the last 14 days have been in Britain, the 26 Schengen countries in Europe without border controls, Ireland, China, India, South Africa, Iran and Brazil.
The White House confirmed that children under 18 are exempt from the new vaccine requirements as are people with some medical issues.

Season 8, Mission 10: It's Oh So Quiet
Up on the roof
~
JANINE DE LUCA: Yes, I see it, Tom. You were quite right. A thin line of smoke rising from the north of Niomh Island. All the Far Hebrideans say Niomh was abandoned early in the apocalypse. There's a very good chance it's Jones.
MORAG BROWN: Good. The boy needs bringing to heel.
TOM DE LUCA: I'm still not entirely convinced you should be accompanying us on this mission, Miss Brown. Jones is a dangerous man.
MORAG BROWN: Ach, don't be daft. I used to change Lachlan's nappies when he was a wee bairn. I'll not be afraid of a man whose backside I used to wipe. Besides, I'm the only person on Mor who spent time on Niomh. Worked in the bakery there before I set up my own. Could tell you some tales about the local folk that would make your hair curl!
PAULA COHEN: [laughs] Yes. Maybe later. Janine, how are you feeling?
JANINE DE LUCA: Stable, thank you, Dr. Cohen. I slept well last night for the first time in a while.
PAULA COHEN: I'm still investigating what that medicine in the bottle you picked up on Dearg Island was, Five. I can observe with a microscope that it slows down nanite movement, but I don't know why.
MORAG BROWN: Aye. They're a tight-lipped lot over on Dearg.
TOM DE LUCA: Still, if it's working, that trip wasn't a waste of time.
PAULA COHEN: By my calculations, it should buy Janine an extra couple of weeks at least.
JANINE DE LUCA: So I might yet live to see Jones become king of the rocks! That'll be a jolly time.
TOM DE LUCA: You'll live to see him captured and tried for his crimes!
JANINE DE LUCA: That's certainly the aim.
MORAG BROWN: Bring the boat into the harbor here on the east of the island. With Lachlan's camp on the other side, he won't see us landing.
[water splashes, boat is dragged across beach]
PAULA COHEN: All right. So we're going to skirt the east of the island and then head toward that smoking using whatever cover we can find. We need to be quick and quiet. Five, take point. Let's go.
~
PAULA COHEN: What happened on this island, Morag? It looks really beautiful in a rugged sort of way. And I can see plenty of tourist stuff. Boards listing native species. A sign for deep sea fishing day trips over there.
MORAG BROWN: Aye, it was. Niomh means beautiful, you know. Folk have always said this is the most bonny island of the Far Hebrides. They used to run yoga weekends here, writing retreats, that kind of nonsense. We had all sorts pitch up over the years, and not a scrap of common sense between them.
PAULA COHEN: So...
MORAG BROWN: Outsiders brought the plague with them. Anywhere with tourists was at risk in the early days.
TOM DE LUCA: Wait. So there were zombies here?
MORAG BROWN: Aye. The laird was strict about it. No one who was bitten got off Niomh. If you had a graze or a scratch, two weeks on [?] Island, the one with the great cairn of stones, before you could come to Mor. People weren't happy about it, but well, what could you do? The Reid's always have ruled with a rod of iron.
PAULA COHEN: That's how communities survived, to be honest. So what happened to the zombies over here?
MORAG BROWN: How do you mean?
PAULA COHEN: I mean, I can't see any zombies. Can you, Five?
JANINE DE LUCA: We didn't see any in the binoculars from the boat, either. So the question is where did they go?
MORAG BROWN: Walked into the sea, maybe?
JANINE DE LUCA: Hmm. Perhaps. We must conduct this mission with maximal speed. The sooner we get off this island, the better. Come along. Run.
~
TOM DE LUCA: There! That's it. Thin plume of smoke from the northwest.
PAULA COHEN: I see it. It's coming from a sort of shack perched on a rooftop.
MORAG BROWN: That's the main town, aye. Could be a bird watching hide out there.
TOM DE LUCA: All right. Five, you keep watch for zoms from that stump. I'll creep up to the crest of this hill to take a bearing across this town and work out a route so Jones isn't alerted to us.
[footsteps across gravel]
JANINE DE LUCA: Dr. Cohen, how is Mr. Yao?
PAULA COHEN: Sam? Uh, he's... he's been talking to Maxine a lot.
JANINE DE LUCA: Because she also remembers Miss Dempsey, the previous Runner Five?
PAULA COHEN: Yes. I never knew her. Nor did Tom. But Sam and Jody have been talking about her a lot. And Maxine.
JANINE DE LUCA: She was... a genuinely exemplary operative. She was good with people. I... I was not good with people at that time. I regret I did not get to know her better. I wish I had more to say about her now.
PAULA COHEN: You can just ask. When we get to talk to Frances. You don't have to tell her about her sister. You can just ask. [footsteps across gravel] Wow! [laughs] That was quick, Tom.
JANINE DE LUCA: What is it, Tom? Did Jones spot you?
TOM DE LUCA: No. No Jones. But I found... all of the zoms. The center of the island is full of dormant zombies. They're just... standing there, just staring, not moving, not making a noise.
MORAG BROWN: Oh Lord!
TOM DE LUCA: I've heard about them going dormant if there's no food source, but I've never seen it before.
JANINE DE LUCA: What a clever place for Jones to make his base.
PAULA COHEN: How did he get past them?
TOM DE LUCA: Climbing over the rooftops. Doesn't matter. We'll take him today. We stick to the plan. Run around the shore. There's a point to the north where we can get to his hide across the rooftops. We have to be fast! No telling what might activate those zoms!
~
PAULA COHEN: I didn't think ordinary zombies could still horrify me!
MORAG BROWN: It's a terrible sight. They're just standing there. How many? 100? 200? And what is that nasty noise they're making?
PAULA COHEN: Sounds like a low monotonous version of the moaning sound they make when they're moving. Perhaps that's their natural sound.
JANINE DE LUCA: Their eyes are milk-white.
TOM DE LUCA: I've never seen this before. Not in Algeria, not on the way. The rain's falling on them and they're just... standing there.
[cat meows]
PAULA COHEN: Look! Crap! There's a cat. It's going to wake them up! Or not. It's just taken a bite out of that one's leg in the red mac. Nothing!
JANINE DE LUCA: Lucky for us. They're evidently not triggered by simple movement. Presumably, they're conserving energy waiting for human targets.
TOM DE LUCA: So if we keep to the roofs, we're safe.
JANINE DE LUCA: At the very least, they cannot climb to reach us. Dr. Cohen, Miss Brown, remain here at the edge of town with binoculars. Stay on the radio and keep a careful eye out. Warn us if anything changes.
MORAG BROWN: I'm more than happy keeping my distance from those monstrosities!
JANINE DE LUCA: Five, Tom, you're with me. Across the roof here, and then that run of buildings, then we'll reassess. Quickly, please. Run!
~
JANINE DE LUCA: Tom, watch out!
TOM DE LUCA: Oh! Thanks, Five. If you hadn't caught me, I would have fallen into the street right in front of the zoms. That'd wake them up, if anything would. Have you ever seen anything like this before, Janine?
JANINE DE LUCA: Only once, a few months after the apocalypse. Scouting a department store for supplies. I crossed the roof to access an inner atrium with no view of the outside world. There were four glass elevators.
TOM DE LUCA: Glass elevators filled with zoms?
JANINE DE LUCA: Someone must have turned in each of those lifts, bitten the others. They'd fed on each other, and then, with no way out and with no prey in sight, they'd become dormant like this. Milky-eyed, not moving. I climbed down. When I passed directly in front of each lift, the zombies inside woke up. Their eyes went from white to clear again. They began growling, gnashing their jaws, trying to reach me.
TOM DE LUCA: Do you think if the whole world were infected, this is what it would be like? Just animated corpses standing still, rained on? Growing mold. Food for cats. [shudders] You heard the report from Abel. The red fungus is on the rise again in coastal towns. No one knows why. They're burning them as soon as they grow, but they're coming back faster and faster!
JANINE DE LUCA: Miss McShell has scoured her files for any hint of her lost memories. She's more certain than ever that the missing part of the Edda concerns the fungus. It is vital we retrieve it from Jones. Five, the wooden struts in that building look secure. Let's proceed along there, and we'll arrive at Jones' hideout. Go!
~
PAULA COHEN: Five, Tom, Janine, I can see you. The roof you're on is one level down from the next rooftop, where there's the shack with smoke coming out of it.
TOM DE LUCA: We can't hear anything from it, Paula. No sounds of movement. Nothing but wind and rain.
MORAG BROWN: Silly boy. Must have gone out and left the fire on. Oh, I remember that time Callum West fell asleep with a cigarette in his fingers and woke up to his whole house burning! Of course, he had been tiring himself out with those late-night visits to Widow Sturgeon, if you take my meaning?
JANINE DE LUCA: Um, yes, perhaps we could keep comms chatter to a minimum? We must be ready for any eventuality. I'll pull myself up onto this rooftop.
PAULA COHEN: Wow, impressive chin-up.
JANINE DE LUCA: It's a sturdy shack, but the door has not been locked. It's open a crack. Inside, I can see... wood brazier, burning down. I believe Jones is not in here.
PAULA COHEN: If he's not there, Janine, you could wait for me and Morag to come over. We'll look through it all together.
JANINE DE LUCA: No need for that. I can investigate the shack easily myself. We may have only found a subsidiary camp. I'll push the door open. [door creaks open, glass clinks] Ah, he left a booby trap! Five, grab that before -
[siren wails]
PAULA COHEN: You need to leave now.
TOM DE LUCA: We need to stay very still. We need to see what the zombies do. They might -
JANINE DE LUCA: Their eyes are turning clear. They're waking up.
[zombies growl]

Traveling to Morocco
Tumblr media
Traveling to Morocco means experiencing the enchanting Berber culture. This North African country has a long history and borders the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Marrakesh has a medieval medina and souks where you can shop for ceramics, leather, and pottery. You can also visit the Kasbah of the Udayas, a 12th century royal fort. The medina is home to live shows and entertainment in Djemaa el-Fna square.
Moroccans have three linguistic regions. In Western Sahara, the population of Berbers speaks Tamazight, an Afroasiatic language. The country has a unified government and military. The king, exercises the executive power. The Constitution of Morocco provides for an independent judiciary and a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The royal government and parliament share the power of legislation and rule. The Moroccan constitution enshrines the rights of the people.
The main road network in Morocco is in good condition. There are paved roads, but you can still find dirt roads. Nevertheless, it's advisable to take a taxi when traveling. Although Moroccans are notorious for their love for cars, the main roads are not always safe. If you're driving a large vehicle, you should avoid crowded areas. The road network is generally in good condition. The national bus company CTM is the only other national airline.
The Moroccan government aims to promote economic development by improving the quality of life. It has been very successful in freeing its people from poverty by introducing free trade agreements with China and Tunisia. It has also forged new commercial ties with Egypt and China. The European Union free trade agreement is set to take effect in 2010. Its free trade agreements with the United States and the European Union have opened up 98 percent of its market to Moroccan goods.
In addition to its friendly and welcoming people, Moroccans are noted for being extremely generous and accommodating. If you are interested in meeting some of the Berber people, you should be prepared to accept their hospitality. You can also take a taxi or charter a flight to Agadir. In fact, you can reach the capital city from Casablanca. And don't forget to check with the local authorities about the price of gas and food. Most hotels in Morocco are located near airports.
The government of Morocco has tried to promote free trade with neighboring countries. Tourism is one of its key industries. However, the country's climate is similar to that of many other countries. The Moroccan economy is largely based on tourism and agriculture. It also has a diverse range of climatic conditions. The most notable difference between Morocco and other countries is the proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. This proximity is a boon to the country's economy.
In the early years of the Arab and Muslim civilization, Morocco had a number of notable writers. Several of the world's most famous authors have been born in the country. Moreover, Morocco is a popular tourist destination, attracting a wide range of travelers. For example, the city of Casablanca celebrates 50 years of independence this year. It has a rich culture, a strong economy, and a unique cultural tradition. Click over here Moroccan Currency
Aside from tourism, Moroccans also enjoy tea. Its rich culture and cuisine make it a popular travel destination. There are many different types of tea in the country. The most famous variety is atai, which is green tea mixed with mint leaves. It is served all day long. The country's two main cities are Rabat and Casablanca. The capital city of Fes is the largest in the world, but it also shares its borders with Algeria and Spain.
The country's diverse landscapes and terrain have long been home to many civilizations. The Atlas Mountains are home to the nomadic Berber tribes. Its abundant wildlife makes it an ideal place to travel with children and experience the Berber culture. While visiting Morocco, make sure to bring plenty of water and drink lots of water. In Morocco, tapwater can cause indigestion and can be contaminated by bacteria. For this reason, Moroccans have to drink bottled water.
The southeast of the country has a dry climate. The country has long hot summers and a dry winter. Due to the rain shadow effect of the Atlas range, the southeasternmost part of the country is desert. The Rif mountains are the country's backbone and are covered in snow. The Sahara Desert is the largest in Africa and it is home to some of the world's largest lakes and rivers. Throughout the entire region, you will find rich natural resources.

Henri Matisse and his Côte of many colours
Beside the glittering water of the swimming pool, a tanned woman lies back on a lounger and unhooks her bikini. Above her the moving arms of a giant sculpture by Alexander Calder flick bars of shade across her skin. On the other terrace lunch is being served by crisp-shirted waiters, the clatter and chatter of well-heeled diners drifting through the bright air. And here in the darkened dining room, where tall windows reveal both views, I am standing in one of the holy places of the world of art.
Welcome to La Colombe d'Or. Only in France would this mixture of sun, fun, glamour and food be called a temple of art. But through the gloom of the unlit room I can see why. Lining the white walls between the massive fireplaces and the brown shutters are rows of paintings by the modern masters. Some were gifts from grateful regulars, others offered in payment for food or lodging in the days when the artists were poor and the restaurant was run by a local peasant’s son.
In pride of place is a painting of a cactus by Picasso. Nearby are two lobsters on a plate by Georges Braque, inventor of Cubism. On the far wall is a Montmartre street scene by Maurice Utrillo, last of the Impressionists. And here by the door is a portrait by Henri Matisse, the artist who brings me here.
This Thursday, Matisse is celebrated in a major exhibition at London’s Tate Modern. It will feature the largest-ever showing of his “cut-outs” – the swirling collages that he snipped from brilliantly coloured paper. He called the technique “drawing with scissors”. Tate Director Nicholas Serota has called this show “once in a lifetime”. And I have come here, to the Côte d'Azur, to follow Matisse’s trail and find his inspiration.
I’m starting in the hills high above the coast, in the pretty medieval village of St-Paul-de-Vence. From the 1920s it attracted artists, who spent their days painting the landscape and their evenings in La Colombe. The guest book has signatures from the giants of Modernism, and slowly their fame pulled in others – writers, singers, film stars and directors. To eat a plate of sea bass with a glass of chilled rosé de Provence, on the sun-drenched terrace under a mural by Fernand Léger, is as close as you can get to a magical era when the world was seen anew in a playground by the sea.
Today St Paul is still awash with artists, its winding lanes filled with galleries and studios. Some cater to the tourist trade, but in the window of Galerie le Capricorne I spot an etching by Chagall. I duck inside. The back room is hung with original prints by Picasso and Chagall, and a lovely line drawing of a woman’s head by Henri Matisse.
Matisse himself lived in the neighbouring village of Vence. I drive there along a winding hill past tall cypress trees. It’s scruffier than St Paul, but the old centre is a perfect circle of ancient stone alleys where locals are shopping for fish on slabs of ice and vegetables from the hills. And it has one great claim to fame: the Chapelle du Rosaire, a nunnery chapel entirely designed by Matisse. I park outside.
“This work is the outcome of four years of exclusive work, and it is the result of all my active life,” wrote the artist. “I consider it my masterpiece.” From the outside it’s a white shed with a corrugated roof. Inside it’s a revelation. Down a flight of dim-lit stairs is a big room of purest white, the walls whitewashed, the floor in marble. On two walls are stark line drawings some 20ft tall, of a saint in robes and the stations of the Cross. In the centre is a vast hunk of yellow sandstone, roughly cut as the altar. And flooding it all with ripples of sudden colour are two walls of stained glass windows, pouring into all this piety the warmth of the hot South in shades of sun-yellow, sky-blue, grass-green, in imagery of flowers and cacti and leaves from the tree of life. It is perhaps the world’s first installation by an artist, an entire environment you can walk through and experience in three dimensions. And it glows.
A nun interrupts my musings to whisper that mass begins in 15 minutes. I wander out to find the house where Matisse lived. Down an unkempt driveway between holiday villas, I glimpse it. La Rêve is a big square Provençal house surrounded by palm trees and looking towards the sea. It is not open to the public, but artists can book to stay in its rooms and paint. I can’t actually see any easels in the garden, but perhaps they are all out in the hills, working in the footsteps of the masters.
As dusk settles I check into my hotel, the art-themed Maison du Frêne. It’s a jokier version of an art installation, the tall rooms painted red and lined with quirky contemporary work – a sausage dog after Jeff Koons, a lampstand made from a golden Kalashnikov, some startling African statues built from jerry cans. I pop across the road to a classic Provençal restaurant, L'Auberge des Seigneurs, where chickens roast on a spit before a crackling fire, and then retire for the night with Warhol’s multiple Marilyn Monroes smiling above my bed.
Matisse lived in Vence during the Second World War, seeking somewhere quiet and safe. But for most of his adult life he lived in Nice, and that’s where I’m heading next. It’s an hour’s drive to the elegant old city which he discovered in 1917. En route is the unspoilt hilltop village of Haute de Cagnes, and the house where Renoir lived. On the mantelpiece in Renoir’s dining room is a photo of Matisse visiting the old master.
“I decided never to leave Nice,” wrote Matisse in 1950, “and remained there nearly my entire life.” Born and raised in the gloom of northern France, he was dazzled by the luminous light of Provence. Along the coast from here in 1905 he pioneered the wild colours of the Fauvist movement, and in a series of hotel apartments in Nice, from the 1920s on, he painted the colour-drenched series of “odalisques” – sensual harem women lolling on sofas, influenced by visits to Algeria just across the water.
The stylish Cimiez district was his main haunt in Nice, and I stop at the grand building of the Hotel Regina, where he lived. Built in honour of Queen Victoria, who liked to winter in Nice, it has now been converted to flats. The grand entrance lobby is still there, with its chandeliers and double staircase. Old photos of the artist’s hotel suite show cut-outs pinned to the walls and spilling over the floors. Studio assistants described exhausting sessions as the artist scissored the hand-painted papers and directed where on the canvas they should be pinned. Often they were repositioned for days or weeks until a final composition satisfied. The process seems similar to a jazz jam session, sampling and improvising on a series of ideas – Matisse’s first major cut-out project was indeed a book of scenes called Jazz.
Up the street is the Musée Matisse, a lovely old Provençal villa in an olive grove where he liked to walk. The collection is small but delightful, surveying the arc of his career, from murky Impressionism in 1890s Paris, to the freedom of the Nice years. And on the first floor are the cut-outs: not just walls of beautiful images of blue nudes and tropical fish and blowsy flowers, but the tiny paper scraps from which these were formed. A row of gold frames holds each fragile cut shape, in blue or purple, green or cream, and you can glimpse the marks where his scissors ran. Seen up close, they are pure splashes of colour and form, affirmations of joy that make you smile.
Next door to the museum is the cemetery of Cimiez, where Matisse is buried. Past a jumble of stone angels, I find a little stairway to a quiet terrace, where a simple slab of stone is surrounded by purple irises and white lilies, their strong shapes and bold colours fitting for this devotee of line and colour who finally fused both in a form that went beyond painting. “I don’t think that I have ever found such balance as I have in creating these paper cut-outs,” he reflected. “Only much later will people realise to what extent the work I am doing today is in step with the future.” Beside the path I find a yellow flower and lay it on his tomb.

Ghosts of North-Africa
Tumblr media
Since the beginning of time, whenever a substance of value was found, people perished, in infinite numbers and in distressing ways.
The trading of ivory, gold and diamonds across Africa's once most important trade route now included the selling of lives. Men, woman and children.
They are the migrants of the Sahara, the ghosts off North-Africa.
Welcome to the Niger desert...
For centuries caravans have trekked the desolated sands of the Sahara, trading in gold, spices, and kola nuts with outer desert towns and trade posts. Less desired items were also traded in Mali and along the Timbuktu route, for instance slaves, beads and cowry shells which were often bartered with ivory from the west.
The caravans often relied on the Berber people to safely guide them across the north-western Sahara desert, sending out runners to scout routes for desert pirates along the Dar el-Arbain route and to prepare the Oasis at Karwa before the caravans, in their thousands arrived.
The camels are prepared in advance, grazed and watered for the 6 month perilous journey. Vital Oasis stops are required for resupplying water and for the animals to rest. The journey along the trade routes covered thousands of miles through the most harsh conditions in this million year old desert. Death by exposure was a common occurrence.
Today, thousand year old stone markers pay homage to the fallen,  echoing Dante's words; "Abandon all hope — Ye Who Enter Here"
Present day, Agadez; the Ciudad Juárez of North-Africa.
Desert bandits, arms markets and drugs, with silver and leather goods being the most popular items sold or traded for salt from Bilma.
No tourists are noticed. The absence of their buses and foreign languages make us, the bearded hijab clad westerners stick out like a sore thumb. The Agadez mosque and market draws followers and patrons from surrounding towns and villages. The once flourishing town has now become a hub for traffickers and smugglers. The profit...humans.
"More people die in the Sahara than out in the Mediterranean", a Malian man tells us. "We trek to Agadez from Chad, Gambia, Mali and Sudan, leaving our homes, our lives and everything else behind. We are kept hidden away from authorities in the ghettos of this small mud built desert town, subjected to hard labour and sexual exploitation, until once a week, the smugglers from Libya arrive", he says.
Amir arranged passage for us to Tunis, explaining the forty hour trip by road, crossing into Algeria. I had last seen the Syrian in Rusafa. It seems like ten years ago. He reminds me that it hàs been ten years. His business card still says, "Guide".
For a middle eastern man he looks more a westerner than we do. Unanimously we blame MTV. Amir laughs it off. Feeble attempt at humor for such a place like this.
Forty hours to Tunis.
More people die in the Sahara the Malian said...the Psalms shepard boy's words mull in my head. This is the valley he spoke of, the shadows of death.
I am addicted to sadness...
Sunrise. The first rays of light are greeted by the call of prayer delivered by a solitary face less voice. It flows through the streets out towards the desert.
Amir received a phone call over  breakfast, informing him of a flight from Mono Dayak to Nouhadibou. We pack hastily. The Red Cross chartered plane fills up quickly. The French pilots sell the seats cheap.
Dollars buys anything. Passports are roughly checked and stamped as we are extricated from the boarding gate like goats.
Amir points at a man and says "That's him, the Tuareg". The dark skinned man on the mobile phone was busy arguing the price of personal floatation devices from Togo for one of his merchant boats.
"Migrant boats", I almost said out loud.
This neatly dressed man straight from an Armani catalogue is a human trafficker and merchant of death. Amir tells us that this man enjoys protection from a Benghazi  group of militants and is untouchable through out North Africa.
Seatbelt fastened. I drift off at the humming of the powerful Allison T56 engines as they come to life.
"What drives us to leave our lives behind, risking inevitable death. To be buried in unmarked graves or swallowed by the deep blue sea. To reach foreign shores. To learn a new language. To start a new job. To raise our children. To leave the sand of this desert behind. To start a new life. To live in peace. We are the cowry shells and beads of this desert. We are weighed and bartered. We are the remnants of war. We are the ghosts of the Sahara. We are a substance of value"
The last of the passengers tuck their baggage away in the over head compartments and take their seats.
The Tuareg walks down the isle with an entourage of gladiators briefly making eye contact before taking his seat "As Salaam Alaikum", he greets.
I remember the article about the people who fled the war in Mali. Did they die in the Sahara after forty hours of thirst? After forty hours of exposure? Or forty hours of abanoned prayers?
My heart wept for them as I replied; "Wa Alaikum Salaam".
I close my eyes and wonder...what peace?

European Union completes Europe take a trip restriction for Americans, main
The United States is amongst lots of countries excluded from a list of safe countries whose residents may travel to Europe once it resumes its borders on Wednesday.
Countries on the safe list include Australia, Canada, and South Korea.
The United States is amongst dozens of nations deemed too dangerous due to the fact that their coronavirus outbreaks are badly contained.
The complete list of safe nations– which is based on residency, not citizenship– includes Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay; China will likewise be included as long as it allows European Union visitors.
Though the list is based upon objective epidemiological requirements, according to European authorities, the exclusion of the United States represents a significant blow to America’s image on the international stage and undermines the Trump administration’s claims that the US break out is under control.
The US has actually reported more than 2.5 million coronavirus cases and 126,000 deaths, more than any other country.
While EU member states will not be lawfully required to follow the list, those that do not could see other states close their borders to them, which would inhibit their involvement in the EU’s economic recovery.
In early March, the Trump administration prohibited travel to the US from much of Europe, pointing out outbreaks in Italy, Germany, and in other places in the EU. The restriction has actually not been raised, despite the fact that Europe has actually largely included its outbreaks.
The EU’s border closure, which came later on in March, used to visitors from the majority of nations outside the bloc, not specifically Americans.
Portugal and Sweden, both EU members, still have severe outbreaks, as does Britain, which is considered as a member of the bloc till the end of the year. Nevertheless, those countries individually have lower caseloads than the United States, as does the EU overall.
Authorities stated the safe list would be reviewed every two weeks and consist of nations with rates of brand-new cases that are the same or lower than the EU’s. The main standard is the EU’s average variety of brand-new infections per 100,000 people over the previous two weeks. As of mid-June, that number was 16 for the EU and 107 for the United States, according to The New York Times
Other criteria will include patterns of steady or decreasing brand-new cases over the previous two weeks, and the overall public-health action and reporting reliability from officials in each country, the European Union said.
The EU stated exceptions would be given for important workers, consisting of health care employees and diplomats, in addition to students, asylum hunters, individuals with household emergency situations, and others.
Forbiding American tourists will have significant consequences for the EU. Countless United States travelers check out nations in the bloc each year. As travel need recovers and Americans seek to venture abroad again, and as economies usually reliant on tourism seek to curb the fallout from the pandemic, the exclusion of a large and lucrative group of tourists could be destructive.
Some countries with economies that are especially dependent on tourist are anticipated to enable more foreigners by implementing health-screening protocols for showing up visitors.
Similarly, European leisure tourists spend millions in the United States each year. The US could leave its ban on travel from Europe in place as retaliation.

BRUSSELS: The United States is not on a “safe list” of destinations for non-essential travel due to be unveiled by European Union governments later on Tuesday, three diplomats said.
The 27-member bloc is expected to give outline approval to leisure or business travel from Wednesday to 14 countries beyond its borders when they vote on the list by midday Brussels time (1000 GMT), the diplomats said.
The countries are Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay, they said.
Russia and Brazil, along with the United States, are among countries that do not make the initial “safe list”.
The vote is aimed at supporting the EU travel industry and tourist destinations, particularly countries in southern Europe hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
China would also be provisionally approved, although travel would only open up if Chinese authorities also allowed in EU visitors. Reciprocity is a condition of being on the safe list.
The list must be passed by a “qualified majority” of EU countries, meaning 15 EU countries representing 65% of the population. Four EU diplomats said they expected it to secure the required backing.
The list will act as a recommendation to EU members, meaning they will almost certainly not allow access to travellers from other countries, but could potentially set restrictions on those entering from the 14 nations.
The EU’s efforts to reopen internal borders, particularly among the 26-nation Schengen area which normally has no frontier checks, have been patchy as various countries have restricted access for certain visitors.
Greece is mandating COVID-19 tests for arrivals from a range of EU countries, including France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, with self-isolation until results are known.
The Czech Republic is not allowing in tourists from Portugal and Sweden.
British residents can also travel to many EU countries, although non-essential travellers to Britain are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

Europe’s in-and-out list reflects its assessment of how well other countries have managed to control their coronavirus outbreaks.
BRUSSELS — European diplomats are poised to approve an agreement on which foreign travelers they want to welcome starting on July 1, as the European Union reopens its external borders for the first time since March, but with the coronavirus still raging in the United States, the possibility of allowing American tourists hasn’t even figured into the discussion, according to six diplomats familiar with the talks.
Europe’s draft in-and-out list reflects its assessment of how well other countries have managed to control their outbreaks. E.U. countries were among the world’s hardest hit by the pandemic this spring, but most now have the virus under control and have been willing to consider opening their borders to other countries where covid-19 is similarly in check.
China is among the 15 countries set to make the cut, despite E.U. skepticism about how transparent it has been about its outbreak. Visitors from China would be allowed to enter Europe only if Beijing drops measures against E.U. travelers.
Also expected to be approved: Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay.
The list is subject to final approval on Saturday, but diplomats said it was unlikely to change.
The rest of the world would continue to be kept out for nonessential travel.
The decision underscores the perception here that United States has failed in its coronavirus response. European leaders and health experts have watched with unease as many U.S. states insist on reopening, even as infections spike in many parts of the country.
In countries keeping the coronavirus at bay, experts watch U.S. case numbers with alarm
E.U. members have seen clusters of infections since they began relaxing their own restrictions. Germany, Spain and Portugal are among those that have reimposed localized lockdowns. But for the bloc as a whole, diagnoses have slowed to 16 cases per 100,000 population over the past two weeks, the main measure Europe is using to determine whether countries make the cut.
The United States, by contrast, stands at 122 cases per 100,000 population and is getting worse. Florida has set records for the past 19 days in a row.
Wary of being pulled into a diplomatic brawl with each country they continue to exclude, European leaders have strained to keep their internal discussions focused narrowly on issues of science and epidemiology.
“The European Union has an internal process to determine from which countries it would be safe to accept travelers,” Eric Mamer, a spokesman for the European Commission, told reporters on Thursday as the discussions were underway. “Our internal process is related, obviously, to considerations based on health criteria.”
But there are clear political pressures.
The continued restrictions on travel from the United States will strain Europe’s most important geopolitical relationship, even if it was President Trump who moved first to block European travelers in March. Continuing the ban on travel with Russia will exacerbate diplomatic tensions with an already-volatile neighbor.
The E.U. plans to review its list of acceptable countries every two weeks.
The list is a recommendation, not a requirement, because each E.U. nation retains sovereign control over its borders. But E.U. members have strong incentives to go along with the decision, since, if they do not, the gradual process of restoring border-free travel within Europe could be placed on hold or reversed, diplomats said.
Diplomats negotiated for hours in multiple meetings in recent days. Although there are tensions between poorer, tourist-dependent southern European nations and richer, more cautious northern ones, enough countries are in favor to assure the decision, diplomats said.
The blandly technocratic discussions — conducted in-person by the 27 E.U. ambassadors in a conference room in Brussels — masked the human drama caused by the travel disruptions. Couples have been stuck on opposite sides of the Atlantic for months. Business negotiations are on hold. Long-dreamed-of vacations have been delayed. Europe’s airports, once bustling connectors for the world, have been eerily quiet. In Brussels, the airport usually has 300 flights a day. It expects 435 for all next week, according to a spokeswoman.
And for the United States — where travel restrictions on Europe remain in place — the European decisions were a point-blank assessment that a U.S. passport, once one of the world’s most powerful, now carries a black mark of disease.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday acknowledged the desire in Washington to open up the world for travel again.
“We’re all taking seriously the need to figure out how to get this open. We need to get our global economy back going again,” he told an online discussion held by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. “We’ll work closely with our European friends, broadly, because I know there’s different views, again, inside the European Union.” He cited “a dozen or more” countries that were interested in opening up to Americans, without naming any of them.
During the E.U. discussions, there have been judgment calls. Some countries, such as China, report infection figures that some public health officials don’t fully trust. Other countries are trending worse, even though their overall infection levels remain relatively decent. And — as Trump has noted repeatedly in recent days — if a country doesn’t perform as many tests, it doesn’t find as many infections. The European Union plans to consult with its delegations on the ground to decide how much trust to put in each country’s official figures.
Europe fell into two camps during the discussions: the tourist-seeking countries and everyone else, according to the diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity to talk about the closed-door negotiations. The tourist spots — led by Greece and Portugal — favored allowing more people to come visit, hoping to salvage at least a scrap of their fast-dwindling summer season. Other countries, especially in the chillier, richer north, wanted to proceed more cautiously.
The talks were also complicated by the fact that European caseloads vary widely. Sweden, the worst-off in Europe, reported 155 cases per 100,000 residents over the last two weeks. Portugal, the second-worst, stood at 44. Britain, which is no longer a member of the E.U. but until the end of the year is subject to many E.U. decisions, was in third place at 24.
And then there were countries that are close enough in their caseload to Europe that they could have been allowed or excluded depending on where precisely the line was drawn. Turkey, Canada and Egypt all had backers and detractors, the diplomats said, since they have slightly worse infection rates than the European Union. Ukraine was on the list, then dropped off. Tiny Georgia, a country of 3.7 million people, steadfastly remained. There was extensive back and forth about China, which has been reporting lower infection rates than the European Union and which has imposed travel restrictions on some E.U. countries but not others.
