Thaumcraft moved on from wands in Tc6, so I wanted to do some service to the various 'casting gauntlets' added by it and some of the addons to it.
Casting Gauntlet "A more modern interpretation of Auromantic manipulation tools, the Caster's gauntlet is built off of studies into the nature of vis in its natural, primal state itself, and how best to harness it without exploiting and potentially destroying the natural sources of aura. thus endangering the balance of the local environment. Initial studies into this topic came from the properties of both the sojourner's wand cap, and the amber wand core. The design of the Gauntlet includes an energized amber lens for the drawing in of vis directly from the local environment, while the ergonomic and practical 'glove' design allows for more direct manipulation of vis as if it were an object one could wield. Some would say this is like reinventing the wheel, and they could very well be right. The iron used in its construction is prone to corrosion through extended use, and personally I would not trust a thin sheet of leather to protect me from all matter of spells that these devices can sling. The saliva of a vampire contains an anticoagulant (a substance that prevents blood from clotting, allowing it to flow for longer). When vampire saliva comes in contact with human blood, it also triggers a rush of endorphins, making the overall experience for a victim to be rather pleasurable—so pleasurable that the victim could forget it ever happened.
Upon feeding, a vampire's complexion becomes flushed and healthy; their skin also increases in temperature, making them look more human at first glance. This effect lasts several hours to several days depending on how much blood is consumed. Conversely, the longer a vampire goes without blood, one may notice their skin becomes paler and they look more fatigued.
The eye of a vampire contains a layer of tissue called a tapetum lucidum, found behind the retina. This allows a vampire to see perfectly in the dark. When a light is shined into a vampire's eye, it glows.
A vampire is unable to experience a drug high by ingesting drugs; they can experience a drug high by drinking the blood of someone on drugs.
Vampires possess superhuman speed, strength, stamina, agility, and grace. 
It takes a lot to make a vampire tired, but it can happen.
Vampires do not need to sleep, but some may do so for pleasure or if they are fatigued.
A vampire's power boosts upon drinking blood. The more blood in their system, the stronger they are.
To kill a vampire, one may either remove its heart (causing instantaneous death), or setting it afire and ensuring it is nothing more than ashes and embers. The second option is more difficult because the body must be completely destroyed, unrecognizable. Decapitation only causes temporary paralysis.
The demonic energy contained within a vampire's blood is responsible for a semblance of homeostasis: It acts much like a human circulatory system in the fact it allows blood to flow within the body; it also acts like a digestive system in the fact that it "burns" away all that a vampire ingests. Vampires do not excrete.
When the blood of a vampire is spilt, one may notice that it moves on its own, oftentimes in an attempt to rejoin the body. When left to its devices, a vampire's blood evaporates into hot steam, leaving no traces of its existence.
Vampires have significant power over their own blood. They can harden it at will, transforming it into a substance much like crystal. Vampires will use this ability to generate razor-sharp claws, or to shield their skin from attacks. It is strong enough to shatter steel.
The blood of a vampire is extremely corrosive, though it has a pleasant aroma.
As the cells of a vampire are, for all purposes, dead, they are resistant to disease and infection as bacteria and viruses are uninterested in them.
Vampires are pale, and, as explained above, become paler when starved of blood. They are incapable of tanning—their cells no longer produce melanin as their cells are dead and frozen in place.
Other than saliva (which is altered by vampiric infection) and blood, all bodily fluids are purged when a human transforms. Vampires weep blood rather than tears; vampires do not ejaculate or discharge; vampires lack lymph.
Vampires are "undead"—they exist in suspension between life and death. Because of this, telepaths cannot peer into their minds (if they attempt to do so, they are struck with a splitting headache); they cannot be tracked; no form of magic can detect that they are even there. 
When a human is transformed, the infection does kill them, but the demonic component of a vampire's blood prevents the soul from exiting the body, trapping it within. Hence, vampires still experience thought and emotion—impulses of the soul translated into chemical processes by the brain. In this case, the demonic energy of a vampire acts like the nervous system, allowing thought and emotion to occur no different than a typical human.
A newly-made vampire is dubbed a "pup" (adorable, I know); a vampire who makes another vampire is called a "sire"; the term used to refer to a vampire of considerable age and power is "coagula".
As breathing is not a requirement for vampires, they are resistant to asphyxiation, drowning, and poisonous gases—this also makes them terrifyingly efficient swimmers, deadly, even. Most vampires still breathe out of habit, or to speak, or because they feel uncomfortable without their sense of smell.
Vampires have greatly increased senses of smell, sight, taste, and hearing.
Because of a vampire's enhanced taste, certain foods disgust them. (Garlic.) Smell also factors into this. Some vampires find it difficult to eat altogether; some vampires have forgotten how to eat.
Because of their superhuman sight, vampires have no need to wear contacts or glasses, though some may still do so in order to blend in with humans.
The origin of vampires remains a mystery. It is, however, proven that they are connected to demons in the fact that it is demonic magic that animates them. Some demons, especially if they are animalistic, shun daylight, much like how some vampires are killed by it and how all vampires don't really appreciate the sun too much. Some demons, such as the chupacabra, also sustain themselves by drinking blood. Vampires who have fallen out of touch with their humanity behave and oftentimes appear demonic.
The cure for vampirism? Very rare, but there is one way. The vampire must come in contact with sephira—the magic produced and utilized by angels. Immense amounts of sephira are released when an angel abandons their mortal disguise. It eats away at the demonic magic within a vampire, eventually freeing them of their curse. Sephira is also emanated by yliaster, the material that angels are composed of, and crushing yliaster has a similar effect to angels reverting to their true forms, though it's definitely not as grandiose.
Vampires can have sex in the same manner humans do; when a male vampire is sexually aroused, blood flows down there. However, as explained above, vampires do not produce semen or discharge, and so, while they may feel the sensation of an orgasm, nothing else will happen.
A vampire can elongate its mouth and dislocate its jaw like that of a snake. 
Vampires possess a pair of retractable fangs that may appear during sexual arousal or bouts of extreme emotion, especially anger.
Vampires possess an extreme healing factor, allowing them to repair damage to their bodies in the space of seconds to hours depending on the severity of their wounds. Some vampires can reattach severed limbs. This goes along with the whole thing about the demonic energy in their veins doing everything it can to preserve the body it inhabits.
Typically, as vampires grow older, their tolerance for sunlight decreases, and they gain significantly inhuman attributes—this is all tied to how psychologically human they are. A vampire who has forsaken their humanity definitely looks and acts the part.
When denied of blood for an extended period of time, a vampire loses its rationality and devolves into a ghoul, a bat-like monster whose only instinct is to drink blood, regardless of who it belongs to.
For a human to become a vampire, vampiric blood must be introduced to the bloodstream. After a brief sensation of euphoria, much like an orgasm, the human experiences intense, burning pain as the demonic agent of a vampire's blood alters the body. Depending on how much blood is in the bloodstream, this process can lasts hours to days, and is enough to send a human into catatonia. 
Sunlight makes vampires uncomfortable; in some cases, it will burn them and kill them. Younger vampires, more often than not, have a higher tolerance than older ones.
There are twelve special vampires, called wraiths, whose power(s) greatly exceeds that of a typical vampire. Their power is able to be obtained by killing and draining their blood. You killed it, you bought it. If a wraith is fed to a ghoul, the ghoul retains its intelligence and human shape. An example of a wraith is Dracula.
A group of vampires is called a clan.
Human blood is significantly more appealing to vampires in comparison to animal blood.
Vampires can detect blood-related abnormalities with ease.
Vampires are able to hypnotize humans by making eye contact with them, forcing them to do their bidding. Humans with significant mental fortitude may resist. Animals are unable to resist.
Holy items do not repel vampires. They can enter churches as they wish, touch holy water, etc.
Vampires do not need to be invited into homes, though they may ask if they want to be polite.
When killed, a vampire's body ruptures and explodes into a fountain of blood, leaving no corpse behind.

The “Simple” Truth: Aziraphale’s Motivations for Lying to Himself (A Meta)
Aziraphale Lies. A lot. But, for the majority of the mini-series, he lies to protect himself (whether it be from God’s wrath, or Gabriel’s wrath, or Uriel’s wrath...or...pretty much anyone from Heaven because they’re all abusive jerks).

I want to be very clear before jumping into my meta that this is not at all a judgment call on Aziraphale’s character. When in an abusive situation, you should 100% do your best to keep yourself safe. And Lies, for Aziraphale, is that protection and specifically against Heaven, it’s his only effective tool to cope and resist the abuses he’s dealt. 
However, that means some of his lies, after 6000 years of repeating them, are internalized.

He’s having difficulties coming to terms with his own abuse, and so he does, on several levels repress his instinct for action. He lies to himself about his motivations for stopping the end of the world. The gif above shows a very drunk Aziraphale telling Crowley he can’t disobey. Although, he doesn’t quite get his words out. 
He clearly wants to help Crowley. In the book, he says as much:

He loves Earth after all, and more than that he loves his life on Earth. He loves having space away from his abusive “home” life where yes, he’s not exactly free, but he’s certainly not the captive he would be in Heaven.
Despite his instincts, like his gut response to tell Crowley instead of Heaven, he has internalized many of the behaviors Heaven has taught him.  At the end of the above passage, for example, HE. Chooses. To. Tell. Heaven. Anyway. because he’s been conditioned to trust Heaven. And that:
Angel’s and Demons are sworn enemies, and under no circumstances should they interact

That Heaven is unquestionably “good” and Hell unquestionably “bad”

And many more.
While we, the audience, can tell that these behaviors are destructive to Aziraphale’s sense of self-worth (and really function just as propaganda designed to help maintain the presumed “goodness” of Heaven). 
But Aziraphale? 
He’s unable to stop the corrosive effects of these falsehoods. And, on top of it all, he has no incentive to let go of his “coping mechanism” that thus far has resulted in his and Crowley’s safety -- lying to himself. 
But what Aziraphale needs is validation for his actual interests, his instincts, his passions. Look at the way he absolutely devastated when Crowley asks him about his sword.

He so badly needs to be loved unconditionally, to feel he’s doing good, and fulfilling his role of the Ineffable Plan. He tells himself these lives, hoping for deliverance from his “side”. Heaven, unfortunately, never delivers once.  And it leaves Aziraphale floating, waiting for rescue, safety, and protection from Heaven. 
And he finds that In Crowley.
Contrast the above distress with the look of relief below. Sure, it’s not the trademark giddy look that Aziraphale employs when looking at crepes, but it is one of calmness that Heaven has not afforded him yet.

They both know their logic here is faulty. Angels are just as capable of doing “bad” as much as demons are capable of doing good. But, they let themselves believe the lie. It comforts them and alleviates the self-destructive behaviors, if only for a second. 
When later confronted with his actions, the relief, the validation, >the love< from Crowley is all gone.  Instead of a calm, reassuring tone, like the one Crowley gives him earlier, this is truly the annoyed voice of God. She knows what he did with his sword, he knows what he did he did without asking, but lying to God is the only way he can get out of this situation without direct physical harm (most likely through falling).

Lying to himself, about the goodness or badness of his actions (when truely they were humane actions) represses the guilt he feels for lying to God and allows him the distance to successfully keep lying when others question his motives. 
I think it is fair to say then, that his repression is a byproduct of the lies he’s feeding himself in order to survive Heaven. However, with real consequences to his relationship with Crowley.
Lying To Crowley

Crowley refuses to lie to Aziraphale. He won’t treat Aziraphale like he does every other Angel or Demon because he refuses to repress his feelings. Sure, he hides them from Heaven and Hell, but that’s usually from prying eyes, never Aziraphale.  And never from himself.  
Aziraphale, in contrast, lies his ass off to Crowley.  This is not to say Aziraphale is incapable of telling Crowley the truth, but as the apocalypse grows near, and shit hits the fan, Aziraphale’s ability to address his abusers and the looming threat of annihilation grows more certain, he falters. 
His lies, lashing out at anyone and everything that could jeopardize his safety, and Humanity’s safety.  His internalized concerns have bubbled to the surface, and he feels like he has no choice but to protect himself from the oncoming dangers.
Look at the below gif and have your hearts broken with me. As a direct result of the lies he tells himself, he’s unable to come to terms with the fact Heaven is not just questionable, it’s wrong. He’s on the wrong side, and instead, he needs to be with Crowley.

This gif is a great example of how him lying to himself negatively harms himself, and reveals his true motivation for lying. Safety. 
He’s trying to remind himself of the kind of safety he’d be risking in telling Crowley the truth that he wants to work together. It’s a plea, an act of desperation because his greatest fears are culminating all at once and making a decision could cost him his “home”, his identity as an angel, and Crowley if they’re unsuccessful. 
We witness at the beginning of Episode 3 how deep the ineffable husband’s bond really is, but also how (even though noone else believes it) they can not acknowledge their friendship/relationship/companionship.  To contrast against the above moment, we see that this is not the rejection he’s hoping it would be. There’s no resolve, no strength, no reasoning. It’s merely the highlighted talking points he’s meant to agree with.  
But, it’s clearly a lie. 
It puts off decision making. It reaffirms a status quo that, while very abusive, feigns stability.

In this gif, he’s pleading with Crowley. 
He’s scared shitless because his two lives are crashing before him.  He’s done a good job lying to himself that he can hide his love of >Crowley< Earth, while still finding a way to follow Heaven’s orders. 
But, now he’s got to make a choice. And it’s clear the choice he wants to take. He WANTS to go with Crowley. Go back and listen to how he says “run away together?” on the street. It’s pure unadulterated want. He wants to go off with Crowley somewhere only they know and never return. But he physically can’t until he is truthful for himself. 
So he lies. Again. And it looks like he’s being stabbed by an invisible knife.
Now Look at the “not friends” Gif again. He’s telling the ultimate lie here. This is not a distressed Aziraphale trying to get rid of an annoying business partner. This is the face of a mourning man, forcing himself to lie to protect humanity and Crowley. 
At this moment, Aziraphale is denying their relationship and not treating their bond as something shared by equals. He can’t be sure that Crowley will be there to catch him if he loses everything, and he simply can’t lose humanity.  
Lying, that they’re not friends is not true at this moment, nor any other moment in the series. He loves Crowley so badly, that he’s hurting both of them with his lies. But, Crowley has had enough of the lies and slander against their partnership, and he offers to “run away together”.  It is literally the one thing both of them want more than anything else in the world. But, it directly goes against the internalized messaging and safety of Heaven, and Aziraphale’s stressed. So What does he do?
He lies.

And Again.
And Again.
He lies because he needs to begin coping with his trauma, and not lie to himself that everything is alright. 
Once he comes reaches his breaking point – a world where no matter what he would be unable to be WITH Crowley – he confronts his issues. 
Only AFTER CHOOSING Crowley does Aziraphale begin to come to terms with his internalized lies, and finally stop lying to himself about how he feels about Crowley.

Drawing that out would take me ages so I’ll just write down here what their quirks and hero names (if they have on) so far. This list will only be including my MHA NG’s that are open to my ask blog 
Oruka (Gang Orca X OC): Orcinus - he can do whatever an orca can even on land, orcinus grants the user enhanced strength and speed, especially in the water. It also comes with the power to produce hypersonic waves that can paralyze targets instantly  
Hero name: Oruka 
Ryunosuke (Bubble girl X Centipeder): Venom bubble - Ryunosuke’s quirk works similar to his mothers, only he can create bubbles from the palms of his hands which are made from venom as a side affect of his slight centipede apperance he got from his father.
Hero name: *doesn’t have one yet* 
Rekkei (Fatgum X OC - adopted): Strong arm - strong arm allows the user to rotate their shoulders repeatedly, allowing them to throw an assault of powerful punches. From his biological mothers side he also has increased speed and hearing

Shosha (Hawks X Rumi): Fierce wing - Fierce wing grants the user two large wings covered in feathers in which the user can manipulate freely at will using their mind

(Any NG’s with their name like this is a NG to one of the MHA villain's (including the Hasaikai), in my NGAU the LoV consists only of Compress, Dabi, Spinner and Toga (aged up), they’re a much more minor group of villians now since their downfall but I figured the league would still attempt to try and take down the hero system, but they do so in a more discreet way by sending their kids into UA as sort of spies)
Jin (Toga X Mustard): Blood control - Blood Control allows the user to manipulate their own blood after it has left their body.Once the blood is out in the open air, the user can freely control its flow and movements, as well as harden it to immobilize foes. Blood Control also appears to allow the user to go unaffected by levels of blood loss that would normally be fatal.

Hana (Snipe X Midnight): Homing -  Homing allows Hana to control the trajectory of her projectiles with perfect precision. As affect of her mothers quirk, whatever bullet she uses will burst with a sleep inducing aroma once it collects with something

Furu (Bakugo X Sero - adopted): Vibrate - Vibrate allows Furu to create vibrations or shockwaves, which can travel through virtually any medium, most notably she uses this ability to shake things she touches with her hands. Vibrate allows Furu to control the speed and strength of her vibrations, including how long the intervals are between tremors

Kiru (Setsuno X Female hero): Razor sharp - Razor Sharp allows Kiru to produce large blades from his body. Kiru’s blades can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and from any part of her body. These blades are strong enough to cut through metal pipes (which are commonly made up of steel or iron), and durable enough to withstand a point-blank explosion.

Furora (Kamui X MT Lady): Nature - Nature allows Furora to produce and control any plant life from her arms and allow it to grow to extreme sizes. By touching a different plant she will be able to make that plant grow out from her arms, if she hasn’t been able to touch anything of nature then she will only be able to produce bark from her body life her father

Okami (Hounddog X OC): Dog - Dog gives Okami an increased sense of smell to the point he can tell how many people were inside a forest from outside. It also gives him the characteristics of a dog, including fur, claws and sharp teeth

Yurei (Mimic X OC): Poltergeist - Poltergeist allows Yurei to telekinetically manipulate objects and people close to him.

Jaakuna (Compress X OC): Magic - Magic allows the user to produce a glittery pink like dust from the palms of their hands, they can either create it slowly or create it in a mini explosion from their hand. Jaakuna can either teleport through this dust, or harden it at will to create bridges or platforms

TJ (Taishiro Junior - Fatgum X OC): Arachnid - Arachnid grants the user the abilities of a spider, TJ can produce strings of webbing from his wrists, climb buildings with ease and is also gifted with a spider sense that alerts him of danger. As a side affect of his fathers quirk he can also store up energies from others attacks and use that energy to make his own attacks stronger

Koneko (Jeanist X Ragdoll): Fiber master - fiber master allows Koneko to control all types of cloth, being capable of telekinetic dominance over the threads that compose them. Targets are unable to resist its power as long as they are wearing clothes.

Taimatsu (Todoroki X Yaoyorozu): Hellflame - Hellflame is an extremely powerful quirk that allows Taimatsu pyrokinetic abilities. Father snorts. “Is that what they’re calling it?”
Well, Yejin supposes, they’re not exactly wrong.
“Paramedics were called to the scene, but were unable to revive the Councilor. He succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital." The anchor thins her lips into a grim line. "Although no details have been released to the public, the police have coined the attack as mutant in origin.”
“There it is!” Mother whoops over the anchor’s sympathetic tone—he is survived by his wife and two children—because there it is. For all its posturing, news is never more than morsels, stuck to the corners of the mouth and sputtered out. But that hardly ever matters; details are the crumbs. Mutant is the center.
Reputation carries into death, after all. Unto it.
“Our Yejin’s a celebrity now.” Father grins. “So to speak.”
Yes, her blood would be impossible to miss, mingled with Councilor Seo’s. It’s in the exit wound, the entry, in the bloom across his shirt. The flecks that dot hers. A double helix, swirling.
A mutant is the killer. Was. Will be. An inevitable conclusion, no doubt. Nameless, but with unmistakable blood. A weapon.
None other than her.
I. Here, peace is nourished with blood
She is weaned on hatred, straight from her mother’s breast. Home is full of it, even. Amidst the uncles and the aunties and the sleight of hand, between the crack of the door and the squeak of the floorboards. Beneath packets of Vitamin C.
We barely have anything, says the spoonful of rice. But they take it anyway, she returns, more recite than reply. Father looks up expectantly. Remember to chew it up before you swallow.
Ink is the spark. Her youth is filled with protests (when they are peaceful), riots (when they are not). How easy it is to hate, she thinks, when uniformed plastic is all venom-tipped teeth can sink into. How easy it is to hate, to bash at forms of pallid skin and tattered hair. It barely seems human.
Thus, it is normal to seek blood. It is the only thing that links us, after all. We are corralled into this.
The first time her flesh is sliced open, Yejin’s gasp cuts through the night air. Little more than a nick on a finger, too cautious to turn pages. But her blood becomes a needle, emotion-sharp and jutting into the air. Ready to defend for her. Ready to attack for her, Mother later amends.
Blood is the fire. No more protests, no more riots. No, she is meant for something more. But she is not carted off like a secret. The heralds of her future are none other than her uncles and aunties, always on the periphery. Unsurprising, in retrospect.
Uncle becomes sect, auntie becomes leader. She learns words like rebel and resistance, hope and revolution. They are small in number, scattered across the country. But the time will come, they say, when there will only be one.
Her parents do not change, at least. Only now she joins them on their walks far too late into the night.
She becomes the tip of the spear, one among many. Honed into a weapon, molded into the means. In the end, blood can only fill what it is poured into, no matter how it stains the edges.
II. This is my blood, which is shed for the many
The Councilor is steeped in a multitude of strange habits.
But perhaps they are only a matter of circumstance. She hesitates to name them for what they are. Who is she, a mere observer, to judge what the Councilor does or does not do with his time? Still, she thinks herself rather fortunate. Said habits have made the Councilor into a cautious man. More likely to drive off, alone, down a winding road towards a decrepit looking bar. Away from Gangnam’s infrared eyes.
What does he find here? she wonders. Whom?
Circumstance would have the Councilor slink out from a side door into Yejin’s waiting path. Fortunate, indeed. He does not notice her at first, still and silent underneath the dim light of a streetlamp. Little more than an incongruity, after all. She is well used to it. A plume of smoke trails behind him, acrid and stinging. But at its very top, a note of perfume, feather-light against her cheek.
It takes him a moment, but he throws a haphazard brow in her direction, nearly stumbling over his feet. He moves to brush past her. Yejin intercepts.
The noise he makes is one of frustration, a cross between a growl and a huff of breath, caught in the back of his throat. “Listen…” He drags out the word, a heavy-tongued hiss, and holds up a palm to ward against her. “Whatever… you want right now. Interview, autograph… money?” He scoffs. “'m really not in the mood, so just. Please.”
Money, hm? It always comes down to money. But they are far past the point of it, now. Now…
She gives him a ghost of a smile. “They cry for blood.”
A shard of ox-red bursts from her palm and pierces through his heart. The Councilor jerks in place, eyes wide, lips still formed around a syllable that gave way to nothing but air. What? She imagines him saying. He hacks a cough, mouth shuddering around rivulets of red. What was that about blood?
Yejin does not blink at the spattered warmth against her skin, nor at the bloom that overtakes his shirt. She keeps their gazes locked and watches it all: the tightening of the lids, the dilation of the pupils. The body is responding to pain. Her blood swirls idly between them, a viscous shimmer contained within crystal walls. His flesh sizzles in protest. And so they stand, frozen, a tableau locked in red. Beautiful, grotesque.
With a flick of her wrist, the moment shatters. The Councilor sags to his knees like a puppet cut from its strings, red fading out into air. Yejin cradles him in her arms, bends as he bends, helping the weight of him down onto the ground.
He is barely conscious when she rises, still hovering over his form. "Please.” Yejin tilts her head at him. “Is that your last word?”
Nothing but a gurgle of the throat, expelled from rapidly cooling lips.
“I cannot tell your family.” She frowns, regret softly spoken. A stone dropped into water. “But I promise to remember.“
Remember it. Remember you. The part of me left in you. A double helix, swirling.
ABILITIES
BLOOD MANIPULATION
Constructs - Yejin can form solid haemokinetic constructs capable of interacting with the environment, in ways such as stabbing, coiling around a target, etc.

She must draw blood before using her abilities. This can be as simple as a prick of the finger. The constructs are not reflective of the size of the wound, but they will naturally be stronger the more blood she expels.
Requires a recovery period after drawing a large volume of blood. In this state, she will exhibit symptoms of anemia due to blood loss: fatigue, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, etc.
On that note, she may bleed to death if she draws too much blood at once, or across a short period of time.

We’ve always been told that the Rolex Datejust is the most iconic dress watch out there and for good reason, this is a watch that’s been around for over 75 years with a history that precedes it. And herein lies my dilemma, a new Datejust costs north of $6,000 and you can get the same 36 millimeter size in a vintage Datejust for around half that price. So given how indecisive I am, I managed to get my hands on two classic silver dial Datejusts five decades apart. And in this video we’re going to take a close look at both of these watches and hopefully by the end you’ll help me make a decision as to which one I should keep.
Here are the two watches side-by-side, both classic silver dials paired with their Jubilee bracelets. Notice that their dimensions are almost identical with the only difference being that the modern rendition has grown a couple millimeters in thickness. Let us start with the reference 116200. This 2019 model has broad shoulders and fully polished lugs. It utilizes Rolex’s proprietary 904L steel, is said to be more corrosion resistant. It also features a screw-down crown and a hundred meters of water resistance.
The bracelet is pure jewelry, small rounded links contrast between brushed and polished surfaces and mold to your wrist. And when the hidden clasp is this magic you almost stop caring that it lacks micro adjustments. The case is designed in a way that it hides the 15 millimeter thickness and by choosing a newer Datejust one is rewarded with modern features such as solid end links, a sapphire crystal, anti magnetic movement, and much better fit and finish. Additionally, the lume is rather serviceable for a dress watch.
But why is the Datejust such a big deal to begin with? Throughout the decades the Datejust has graced the wrists of many luminaries, endlessly customizable, Martin Luther King famously wore an 18 carat gold version on Jubilee. Winston Churchill was gifted one from Hans Wilsdorf and requested to have his family coat of arms engraved on the back. Celebrities pictured with a Datejust include Harrison Ford with his porcelain dialed variant displaying Roman numerals and Daniel Craig with his not so James Bond like modern Rolex, very much like the model we’re reviewing today.
And last, but certainly not least, we’re going to spend a moment talking about a contemporary that I respect greatly. Anthony Bourdain seems to never go anywhere without a watch on his wrist and is often pictured wearing his blue dialed Oyster Perpetual Date, which is essentially a 34 millimeter Datejust. Ostensively a food show, Bourdain’s travels dug deeper to unearth the culture, politics, art, and humanity in the places that he visited. What was different about Anthony, who friends called Tony, was his uncanny ability to cut through the superficial and get under the surface, his gritty and unfiltered style, as well as his often poetic commentary was refreshingly genuine. The unlumed stick hour markers are beveled down the center to capture light. Though you can tell that the second hand here beats at a much slower frequency than it’s four Hertz counterpart. That is because the 26 jewel caliber 1570 beats just shy of 20,000 BPH and does not feature a quick set date function. On the wrist the vintage Datejust lacks the heft of a modern Rolex. Rather it’s delicate nature reminds me that the watch has been on this earth longer than myself and I am made keenly aware that it has lived a whole life prior to making it to my possession and interacting with it demands a certain level of respect and mechanical empathy. You should choose the vintage Datejust if you view dings and scratches as character building and like the idea of wearing something in boon with life.
So after it’s all said and done which Datejust do I like better? I honestly don’t have the answer to that right now. It’s one of those situations where whichever one I decide to wear for the day, I say, “Yeah, this is the one that I’m keeping.” These two watches share so much similarities in terms of their resemblance to each other and their size.
