Iwájú, Disney's first animation collaboration with an outside studio in 100 years, has revealed its first trailer and a February 28 Disney+ release date for all episodes of the limited series.
Iwájú is set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, and tells a coming-of-age story that follows "Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds."
The trailer, which you can see below, shows a world filled with incredible tech "inspired by the spirit of Lagos" and one adorable lizard named Otin. This special lizard, who is at least partially robotic in origin, is seen in the trailer with some pretty powerful abilities.
The series comes from both Disney and Pan-African Comic Book Entertainment Company Kugali, and the team includes director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku. The series is produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson. The voice cast includes Simisola Gbadamosi (Tola), Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan (Kole), and Weruche Opia.

Tola is the moment!!
Have you all seen Iwájú? It's pretty good, and I hope it gets another season to properly explore the advancement of technology in Lagos and fixing the classism that takes place throughout the series.

I'm now a few episodes into Iwájú, and holy cow am I impressed! In my opinion, it showcases what truly good children's media can be, which is storytelling that connects with the whole family. So far, I've been gripped by a really earnest story of a young girl seeking companionship and love, ultimately desiring it from her father - a father who just wants to keep his daughter safe, but is misguided in how to achieve that.
Some of it's material is surprisingly mature, but it's still handled in a way that makes it accessible and appropriate for younger audiences. It's absolutely a show I think is worth watching as a whole family or even by yourself, because I'm even enjoying watching it alone as a 26 year old!

Iwájú has been a very good show so far for many reasons, but it's also the first show I think I've seen ever where the closed caption subs actually transcribe a non-english language instead of just [speaking x]. The Yoruba is transcribed and a non-hearing person who knows Yoruba would have the same ability to understand it as a hearing person who knows Yoruba. The show uses English, Nigerian Pidgin (which is mutually intelligible with English), and Yoruba and it all gets transcribed in the closed captions. This has to be because Disney made it in collaboration with the Pan-African studio Kugali Media.

I just watched the first episode of Iwájú, and I'm already loving what I'm seeing! Please go watch it if you can! Don't give Disney the chance to say we don't care about unique and original stories!

Where are the Iwàjú gifs and fanart? My kid and I just finished watching it and it was amazing! We enjoyed it WAY more than Wish.
My kid was bummed though that there were no Otin figures or plushies so they made their own with model clay and memory. Yeah, that's a little string on the chest to replicate the cute hoodie it wore.
