Dax and Kate shared some classes together. She'd been checking him out all year, discreetly because what would her friends think if she was turned on by a weirdo like Dax. He watched her in every class they shared, he sat a couple of rows behind her so it wasn't hard to hide.
It was Costa who told her about the party at Thomas's house. When they were kids they were all a group, but over time she started to drift apart and now she barely spoke to Kirby. Not that Kate was super popular, but puberty had certainly done her a big favour and she was quite close to Alexis.
It was getting dark and Kate and her friends decided to leave on their way to Thomas's house. By the time they got there, it was already crowded. They began to drink and spread out in the crowd. By twelve o'clock Kate was already a bit drunk, and when she ran out of the drink in the glass she had in her hand she decided to go inside for more. It took her a while to get to the kitchen and when she did she found Dax with a camera.
-What's with the camera-, she asked as she sipped from a bottle of vodka.
-Costa wants me to make a film about Thomas's birthday-, he said, placing the camera on the counter.
-Don't you want to drink?-, she said, offering him the bottle.
-No, I never drink, but thanks-, they both smiled.
-Hey, why don't you come and dance with me for a while? I've lost my friends in the crowd and I don't want to be alone-, she said.
-I don't know, I don't want Costa to tell me something about the film-, he said, not very convinced.
-Let's go outside and if we see any of the three of them we'll give them the camera for a while-
-I don't know-, he said again.
-Come on, Dax please-, she said, trying to convince him.
-Well, all right-. She grabbed his wrist and walked out of the house with him following her. For their good fortune, she spotted Costa by the pool and they both approached him with the intention of handing over the camera. After talking a bit he agreed and she dragged Dax through the crowd while Costa made a blow job gesture to him.
They danced for a while, which for Dax took forever, not because he didn't want to, but because he thought at any moment he would get a hard-on and she would laugh at him. Suddenly Miles started telling everyone to back off and someone threw the gnome that Dax had stolen from that dealer's house at him. The gnome broke and a crazy amount of ecstasy pills flew out of it, flying everywhere. Kate wasn't far behind and dived for two. Once she had them she went back to Dax.
-I got you one for you-
-What is it?-
-I think it's ecstasy-
-I don't take drugs-
-Come on, not even half?-. Costa appeared with J.B. and asked them if they knew where Thomas was because he had to "take a pill right now", and told them to take another one themselves. -Dax doesn't want to-, she pouted as she looked between him and Costa. -Come on man, have at least a half-, his friend tried to convince him.
-Well, fine-, he said, taking the half that Kate had offered him while she took the other half.
-Take it, I don't want to throw it on the floor-, she said laughing and giving the other one to the two guys. She and Dax continued to dance as the drug began to take its effect.
Kate began to feel more relaxed and began to focus on the boy who was with her. She looked into his eyes, moved closer to him and after briefly glancing at his mouth, kissed him, standing slightly on her tiptoes. Dax didn't react at first, but as soon as he realised what was happening, he followed her kiss. He placed his hands on her waist and she lowered them further, she liked to be grabbed by the ass while she was making out and she wasn't going to make exceptions no matter how drugged she was. Dax couldn't believe it, he kept kissing her until he thought that maybe she was just doing it for the alcohol and the drugs and he pulled away from her.
-Kate I…, I don't think we should-, he paused and looked into her eyes, -I'm sure you only did it because you're drunk, and I don't want to take advantage of you, neither do I want you to regret it tomorrow-.
-What? Dax, I've liked you for a long time-, she said, turning red, -well, not like like you because I don't know you well enough, but I do think you're pretty hot-, she said blushing.
-I like you too, Kate-. Then she grabbed his arm again and went into the house looking for a spare room. She went upstairs and opened a door, which she immediately closed when she saw that there were people inside, -I'm sorry-, she shouted as she closed it. The next door she opened was indeed an empty room. She went in, and when Dax was already inside, she locked the door, she didn't want anyone to interrupt them. When she turned around he was behind her looking at her, -we shouldn't be here, it's Thomas's parents' room, I don't think he'll be too happy about it-, he said.
-Dax, I don't fucking care how Thomas feels about us being here-, she replied as she moved closer to kiss him again.
As he ran his hands down her body again, she walked him backwards until he bumped into the edge of the bed and sat down. Kate straddled him and moved to kiss his jaw and neck. She stood up to remove her dress and remain in her underwear. By this point, Dax already had a tent in his trousers that she didn't pass unnoticed. She gave him a peak and knelt between his legs, removed her bra and said to him as she began to rub his trousers with her fingers, -you know, I've always known you look at me in class, I can feel your gaze burning the back of my neck-. He didn't know what to reply. She unbuttoned his trousers and between the two of them they removed his underwear.
-Fuck-, she said more to herself than to him.
-Something's wrong?-, he said worriedly.
-What-, she looked into his eyes, -oh, no, no, it's just that I wasn't expecting it so-, she looked down, -big-. He was relieved, not that he'd been with many girls, and he was afraid there might be something wrong.
She took it in her hands and licked from base to tip like it was an ice cream, then kissed the tip using her tongue and took what she could in her mouth. As she did so, his breathing began to get heavier and he couldn't help but moan as she took it all the way into her mouth. Kate's hair was down, and although she had tucked a few strands of it behind her ears, it began to fall towards her face. Dax noticed and held her hair back with one hand while leaning on the bed with the other. He looked at her just as she looked up and all he could think was that he didn't want this to be the only time he saw her like this.
Kate stood up and wiped her chin with the back of her hand. She kissed him again and this time he was the one who moved her onto the bed during the kiss. When they broke apart he was on top of her, leaning on the mattress with one arm and caressing her body with the other.
-Dax, please tell me you have a condom-, she said pulling away from the kiss.
-Fuck, um, I'm sure Thomas's parents have some, look in that drawer and I'll look in the other one-, he replied, pointing to one side of the bed. He got off her back so that they could both have a good look. -I found them-, he said as he opened the drawer and looked at them. He took one and closed the drawer again. He put it on a little sloppily and kissed her again. He reached his hand down and began to touch her over the fabric of the thong she was wearing. Then he moved it to the side and started fingering her as he continued to kiss her. She was letting him lead her in the kiss because she was distracted by his fingers. He pulled away and asked, pulling his hand away from her pussy, -Can I…?- as he looked down at his cock and back up at her. Kate just nodded, and as Dax pushed it in she grabbed him in a hug.
-Shit, you're tight-, he groaned without moving so she could adjust.
-Y-You can move-, she said, sighing loudly. And so, following her request, Dax began to move his hips, fucking her gently, but not slowly. His pelvis rubbed against her core every time he moved and not long after, she felt herself starting to heat up. He felt like he couldn't last much longer, he felt like he was in heaven. He moved one of his hands to her clit and rubbed it. Kate dug her nails into his back and squeezed his cock, -Dax I don't think I can last much longer-.
-Me neither, cum whenever you feel like it," he said, and she soon just did that. She clenched her walls until he, in a couple of irregular thrusts, came with a groan. He was about to pull out of her when she grabbed him with her legs to keep him still, -Stay a little like this, I don't want you to pull away-, and he listened to her and laid his head on her breasts, kissing her on the cheek first. She breathed deeply as she began to stroke his hair.
-Dax, I want to get to know you so I can say I like like you-, she said softly, closing her eyes.
-I think I already like like you-.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has signed a bill that is aimed at fighting homelessness.
Called “Home IL,” it will bring state agencies, nonprofit organizations and other advocates together. The bill focuses on an equity-based approach, which includes the voices and contributions of those who have experience homelessness.
It codifies the collaboration to move Illinois to “functional zero” homelessness by bolstering the safety net, targeting high-risk populations, expanding affordable housing, securing financial stability for unhoused individuals and closing the mortality gap.
“Every person deserves access to safe shelter and the dignity that comes with housing,” Pritzker said. “This is a first-of-its-kind multi-agency cooperative effort — bringing together state agencies, nonprofit organizations, advocates, and people with lived experience to prevent and end homelessness. I’m grateful for their dedication and believe that together, we can prevent and end homelessness once and for all.”
Rockford has already taken strides in this aspect. In 2017, it became the first community to reach “functional zero” levels among veterans and the chronically homeless.
Illinois’ Interagency Task Force and Community Advisory Council works across 17 state departments and agencies, as well as over 100 processes, programs and policies, to develop a comprehensive plan to combat homelessness.
The goal of the plan is to prevent shelter entry or ensure that shelter stays are limited and lead to quick transitions into stable living situations.
Pritzker has also committed about $360 million for the initiative in his FY24 budget. These investments include:
• $118 million to support unhoused populations seeking shelter and services, including $40.7 million in the Emergency and Transitional Housing Program.
• $50 million in Rapid ReHousing services for 2,000 households, including short-term rental assistance and targeted support for up to two years.
• $40 million in Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) Capital funds to develop 90+ new PSH units providing long term rental assistance and case management.
• $37 million in Emergency Shelter capital funds to create more than 460 non-congregate shelter units.
• $35 million for supportive housing services, homeless youth services, street outreach, medical respite, re-entry services, access to counsel, and other shelter diversion supports.
• $21.8 million to provide homelessness prevention services to approximately 6,000 more families.
• $30 million for court-based rental assistance.
• $15 million to fund Home Illinois Innovations Pilots.
• $12.5 million to create 500 new scattered site PSH units.
“People experiencing the trauma of housing instability are our neighbors and community members who deserve to be treated with humanity and dignity. With this cooperative effort, Illinois is ensuring our state agencies can continue to collaborate, and that stakeholders are at the table with us, to support our most vulnerable in living healthy, well, and with dignity.” Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton said. “Our state is making it clear that we will continue to work together so we can all move forward, and we will focus on holistic strategies that bring us closer to ending homelessness in our state.”

One of the most fascinating pieces of movie analysis I've ever read is J.B. Kaufman's thesis of the "two different Snow Whites" in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
He writes about this in both of his two books on the making of the movie, The Fairest One of All and its companion piece Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Art and Creation. His argument is that Snow White's two leading animators, Hamilton Luske and Grim Natwick, each gave Snow White a slightly different personality when they drew her. A close look at the movie, and knowledge of who animated which moments, reveals subtle differences in Snow White's expressions and body language. Luske, her head animator who handled the majority of her scenes, portrayed her as a more purely innocent, childlike character, while Natwick, the creator of Betty Boop, gave her a little more maturity, sophistication, and sauciness.
You can see the difference, for example, when comparing her girlish interactions with the animals in "With a Smile and a Song" and "Whistle While You Work" (animated by Luske) to her flirtatious smiling at the Prince from the balcony, or her "mothering" of the dwarfs as she examines their dirty hands (animated by Natwick). Or her responses to Grumpy in the scene before the Washing Song: as she asks "What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" she looks at him with a devilish grin (Natwick), but then when he sticks out his tongue at her, she reacts with the most wide-eyed, girlish shock (Luske).
Now, I don't know if these two men really held different views of Snow White's character, or if it just worked out that Luske drew Snow White's more innocent scenes while Natwick was assigned her more grown-up moments. But either way, Kaufman argues that this "tension," the movie's constant push-and-pull between "Snow White as a wide-eyed innocent girl" and "Snow White as a self-assured young woman," makes her an especially interesting Disney Princess. I tend to agree, especially because, miraculously, there's no sense of inconsistency in her character. She comes across as a young girl on the verge of womanhood, who naturally can still be naïve and childlike in some ways, but more grown-up and clever in others.
This thesis makes me wonder if certain "tensions" in other movies are the result of different viewpoints within the creative team.
For example, in Beauty and the Beast.
Linda Woolverton has often talked about her feminist goals in writing Belle's character, which sometimes clashed with her collaborators' visions of Belle as a more traditional fairy tale heroine. It just might have been those clashing viewpoints that created the dichotomy in Belle that I personally think makes her interesting. On the one hand, she's a strong-willed misfit rebel, partly inspired by Jo March in Little Women and by Katharine Hepburn's screwball comedy heroines, who longs for adventure, isn't looking for romance until she unexpectedly finds it, stands up to men (and beasts) who abuse their power, and refuses to let anyone dominate her. On the other hand, she's a sensitive dreamer with delicate beauty and balletic grace, who wears pretty, ladylike dresses, adores fairy tales and love stories, and is sweet, nurturing, and almost motherly to her friends and loved ones. Yet somehow these two sides of her character co-exist with no sense of inconsistency between them.
There's also the dichotomy between the two different views of the Beast that the movie seems to present at once. On the one hand, there's the Beast as an unseemly brute, who's beastly form is both a just punishment for his flawed character and an outward symbol of it, and who needs to be "tamed" into proper "human" behavior, culminating in his physically turning human again. On the other hand, there's the Beast as a suffering, self-loathing outcast, unfairly hated, feared, and dehumanized, whose plight under the spell can easily be read as an AIDS allegory, and who needs to be accepted and loved as he is. I suspect that this also stems from different goals and viewpoints in the creative team. (For example, Howard Ashman's clash with the directors over whether the Prince should be a child or a man in the prologue – the former would have made him more "tragic" but the latter makes his punishment more "fair.")
I'd like to read an analysis of these "tensions" similar to Kaufman's analysis of the "two different Snow Whites."

April 1st is the birthday of American librarian and storyteller Augusta Braxton Baker (1911-1998). Born to two schoolteachers in Baltimore, Baker was a voracious student who read at a young age and careened through elementary and high school. With advocacy support from Eleanor Roosevelt, Baker was admitted to the Albany Teacher’s College and in 1934 earned a B. A. in Education and a B. S. in Library Science making her the first African American to earn a librarianship degree from the college.
In 1939, Baker went on to work as the children’s librarian at New York Public Library’s Harlem branch, founding the James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection of Children’s Books to showcase representation of Black children and life in books, and beginning a lifelong career with children’s literature and the New York Public Library (NYPL). In 1953, she was appointed Storytelling Specialist and Assistant Coordinator of Children’s Services, quickly moving into the Coordinator of Children’s Services position years later and becoming the first African American to hold an administrative position with NYPL. Throughout her career, Baker was active with the American Library Association, and chaired committees for the Newbery Medal and Caldecott Medal recognizing excellence in children’s literature.
In celebration of Baker’s birthday, we’re sharing The Golden Lynx and Other Tales, a collection of international folk tales compiled by Baker and illustrated by Austrian artist Johannes Troyer (1902-1969). This is the first edition of the book published in 1960 by J. B. Lippincott and is signed by Baker, who writes in the introduction, “No story has been included in this collection that has not stood the supreme test of the children’s interest and approval”.
