Yes, hello, I love your blog, you're my only window into what the fandom is doing and I could always completely skip the manga and just stick to reading here. So, about your poll of popular theories, I saw something about the demon world being underwater, would you mind elaborating, please? It's for research. For a fanfic 👀
[The poll in question]
I'm always going to advocate for reading the manga, not just because of what happened with S2, but also to see all the gorgeous detailing Demizu puts into her work that's lost in the transition to TV animation, along with her playing with perspectives/proportions in relationship to power dynamics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 1 | S1 Episode 1)
But thank you! <3
My understanding was the theory of the demon world being underwater was introduced by @couldnt-think-of-a-better-name, who was mainly active during the series' heyday (February 2019-July 2019, between the releases of chapters 123-142 during the King of Paradise and Seven Walls arcs and when S1 premiered in Japanese and English).
• Main post about the theory • Secondary post about Lambda-7214 being a coordinate • Neat edit of chapter 7's, chapter 16's, and chapter 2's cover art • Volume 13 Special Edition mini-artbook art hinting at the trajectory of the series
I think it's interesting in how the Seven Walls search party traverses what we're presented with as the entire demon world to find clues about Cuvitidala and the Seven Walls, yet the largest body of water we see anyone interact with is a pond. Nothing close to an ocean that would present them with difficulties such as building a boat or buying one from demons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 60 | Volume 8 Title Page | Chapter 99 | Chapter 100 | Chapter 102)
Shirai also confirmed the elevator at Goldy Pond takes one to "a certain forest in Australia" (out of 458 forest communities).
Tumblr media
(Mystic Code Book Chapter 3 Q&A)
While the stairs under Grace Field headquarters seem to land one somewhere on the east coast of the former United States of America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 178 | Chapter 179)
There's the imagery of the Statue of Liberty, leading me to believe the North American headquarters for the Ratri clan are located in (former?) New York City, but I don't know if I would necessarily say they wash up on the city's shores since Mike takes a jet out to meet them and the children aren't freezing in the November weather there. There's also the impracticality of after coming back from the demon world to transport goods or just traverse between the worlds you conspicuously land out in the open on the beach, so I believe it was the demon god's meddling that sent them to this beach, and the proper exit in one specific, singular location like the Goldy Pond one is somewhere else in the area. Two specific locations located in opposite hemispheres in our world, yet in the demon world you could potentially travel between the two passageways on foot in approximately a week based on the time it took the kids to reach the shelter at B06-32 (one day of initially wandering through the forest, five days traveling with Sonju and Mujika, and one day walking through the wasteland) and how long it took Yuugo, Emma, and Ray to reach Goldy Pond (four days) if it was a straight shot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 49 | Chapter 60)
It all leaves me very curious about how large the demon world is compared to the human world and how the demon god decided to split the two worlds up.
It's also interesting how despite all the water imagery in the series, we don't see any rain in the manga outside of the chapter 28 cover art (mentioned in the fourth post of that list):
Tumblr media
But the anime chose to have a very light rain overlay during the second episode while not animating the ground or characters getting wet:
It rains in the light novels.

(TPN Light Novel 4: Films of Memories [December 2020] - "Operation Stormy Night," originally published in Minerva Confidential Report Report Volume 1 that was packaged with the first volume of the Japanese S1 blu-ray in March 2019)
And we see the children playing in the snow in the past.

I can't help but feel sorry for Ichigo and think he's always feeling like this glimpse of us song by joji. like he might be regretting everything, even having a child with her. it feels frustrating haha
Looked up the song & yeah, it seems to kinda fit with what Ichigo might feel (tho i don't think he'd call Ori perfect compared to Rukia nor would she turn the rain to a rainbow. Only RUKIA cleared it for him 😌).
It doesn't seem like Ichigo's happy at all, or else Ywach would've returned way sooner. Not to mention, he was depressed enough to the point that Urahara thought it'd be a good idea to have Ori & all the girls closest to Ichigo—including his own sisters 🤨—dress in swimsuits to make him "happy" (JET artbook interview). Kub0 never said if it worked but we know it's never worked in the past (like the trashy dress in TYBW), & it tells us that Ori is still depending on Urahara's crazy ideas to try grabbing Ichigo's attention 🙄. Hasn't she learned? Why would anyone think that's what Ichigo wants? Why was he so depressed that Ori sought Urahara's advice? Shouldn't she know him better as his wife?
Makes you question just how close they really are & if Ichigo even confides in her at all. Were it Rukia by his side, this would've never happened 🤷‍♀️😌.

🪽 translated a passage from one of the artbooks—
Tumblr media
i guess it's up to interpretation (and i don't think google translator is all that good) but this wording somehow makes a lot more sense to me. the draconians are harbingers of crisis. mothman. weird dragon animal people from heaven who don't behave like humans because they're not. they don't die, Varie didn't die, she's not a ghost in the mystic valley, she's just doing her own thing. these bugs don't do anything to prevent disaster, they're just moths to its flame. thank youuuuuu Varie......! LOVE your work mama!!!
oh right: and the wings. Okay! so once again, no real difference between the series and the film in this regard? their wings aren't a physical phenomenon firstly so much as a mental one. regarding the film, we can think "aww she got her wings" is kinda corny, but in both the series and the film, it was undeniably really important to convince us that the ultimate source of Hitomi's power is herself. not the pendant, not the tarot, not the boyfriend. (although that's a perk.) it wasn't her choice to be helpless within hopelessness. she finds power in acting for herself and for others, out of compassion, not bootstraps bullshit.
also, kinda hard to avoid Buddhism when talking about desire. Just gonna throw that out there, do what you want with it.
it's only through Hitomi's experiences/actions with others that she grows and reeatablishes herself to herself. if she didn't need the company of others, the story of Escaflowne wouldn't exist. needing help/community isn't shameful, it doesn't take anything away from her and how she grows. this is a collectivist story, not an individualist one.
i do strongly believe this is why she's a runner, too. running requires only her own stamina. if it were another sport/activity, especially if more reliant on probability, we might link her wishes to her success in a way which unintentionally diminishes her. but on the off chance that a viewer doesn't quite follow the physics of how the pendant/wishes work on Earth vs Gaea, Escaflowne can instead show you that inadvertently causing injury, or taking a shortcut, etc., will not make Hitomi a faster runner. and we know speed is what she focused on, not so much endurance. the track is just linear points A-B. i think this was pretty deliberate. we see her run with proper form over and over, for fun and for survival, to remind us that this skill is owed entirely to mundane effort.
Hitomi has fixed her sights on Amano, but by chasing after him, she can't seem to beat her own best time— but look at that long jump she did to rescue Van in episode 5, and running to the bridge in episode 6! And so on.
the wings are yet another literal metaphor in Escaflowne, double meanings, layers. Everything with a counterpart. (Cause/effect, action/reaction, character/character.) like so many other things, they manifest out of force of will/want. Varie telling her sons to hide them isn't only "don't show these to people or they'll hunt you for sport," it's also "hey suppress your emotional and spiritual sense of self for me, k babe?"
if it's true that the wings, through will/concentration/awareness, can either be used for conquest or for saving lives, this in the film gives more grave and tragic implications to Folken's claim of abandoning his. Not only is he not using them for any purpose, to abandon them at all is to abandon himself. the same way he was abandoned by the divisive, inequitable traditions of their clan that drove him away from Van, who he loved and still loves beneath the jet-black clouds of agony...
... again, just like in the series, but diverted down a different path. Hitomi and Folken are, from the very first moment on the train platform (and later by Folken's white-knuckled insistence) set up as one another's counterpart— just like in the series. They are the people who care about Van most, they share each others' abilities in the series just as they do in the film, and in the series they get along almost instantly. They are each other's counterpart, and surely this is part of why Van feels so strongly for Hitomi.
AGAIN, FUCK, OK, LISTEN TO ME: JUST LIKE HOW EVERYTHING ABOUT DILANDAU AND ALLEN IS SUPPOSED TO PARALLEL— THAT IS, EMPHASISE— THAT IS, LEAD BACK TO— FOLKEN AND VAN, THE SAME GOES FOR THIS!!!!! Van obviously takes a lot of comfort in Hitomi because she's similar to Folken, who he is hurt by and can't seek comfort from— and this is the basis for a real sense of safety, of platonic love firstly, not like ALLEN "HUH?" SCHEZAR who gets a whiff of Moon + Girl and goes in for the kill. freak
In the film it seems like an odd juxtaposition at first (wish it went a little harder on Hitomi's end) but it's the same juxtaposition that brings her closer to Van; she sees his suffering, finds kinship in pain, and a shared hope for better. Folken is bereft of hope from anything but total rebirth— just as he does in the series, but different! In contrast to the series, Van has been without Escaflowne for how long? And Folken hasn't killed him despite his claim that this all he wants. Both Folken and Hitomi are exceedingly lost, wanting to die, strongly enough to reach through space. Through all their pain they just come to different conclusions :( and even then, Folken is trying to reach her. Not romantically, and he takes her seriously. She's a means to an end, but she's also a person to him.
i love depressed Hitomi. by the time i saw the film (grade 8?) i had already grappled with abuse and depression for many years, and what she depicted was something so raw and real to me, something still hard to find. starting her off at that low place vs her anxiety in the series made her arc seem much stronger. if anything i wish it had gone even deeper, but the strange listless dreamlike dissociation was real in a way that e.g. Known Depressive Evangelion never hit for me.
Sora single-handedly represents Atlantis/Draconians, a clan who put their faith into the wing goddess and have a connection to the technology/deity of ancient Gaea (instead of the cycle of rebirth containing Atlantis and Gaea, now it's Gaea that's repeatedly reborn.) She has the same court eyebrows as Varie, so she has/had status. She's otherworldly, a Tennyo, or a celestial maiden.
if Sora's people worshipped the wing goddess but were wiped out, is she sore that the wing goddess didn't appear to help her then?
The commentary in the Newtype Film book says that just as Folken's will upheld the black dragon clan ships and this is why they fall apart upon his death, and this is also why Escaflowne disappears into Sora at the end of the film, when she dissolved into mist. Varie is a harbinger of calamity, Sora is here as a witness.
If wings are a symbol of personal liberation for Hitomi (according to Buddhism, Wisdom and Compassion are to enlightenment as wings are to a bird) then the wing goddess is also you!? Maybe? By empathising, by feeling compassion for another and their pain as your pain, you can understand yourself and your pain better, too, if you focus. But remember this is a story, and that means one day returning. over and over, forever, if you will it. You're older now. It won't be the same. But it will be familiar.
Hey by the way, now that i've talked about the film so much— pretty sick move to upcycle the unused concept of Series Van's heterochromia for Film Folken.

1/2 A couple of months ago, Amazon became available in my country, and I took the opportunity to order the Kyoshi and Yangchen novels (plus the complete collection of Calvin and Hobbes). When they arrived I realized that even though I've been an atla fan since it first came out, these books are the first piece of (official) atla merchandise I've ever owned. I kinda wanna own more, but other than the original artbook
Continued:
2/2 and the "Beasts of the Four Nations" book that has been delayed for who knows how long now, I'm not really interested in anything else. However, it got me curious: what atla merchandise do you own? Do you have all the comics? DVDs/Blu-rays? Any figurines? Do you keep them all in a shelf specifically reserved for avatar products? :P
Good choices! (Both the Avatar novels and Calvin & Hobbes. I have the paperback complete collection box-set and it's a delight.)
Anyway, fun question! I was going to take a picture, but I realized I have too much stuff to photogenically arrange. I do not have an Avatar display, and in fact I currently am in dire need of extra shelving and only have a few haphazard displays of various things, with most of shelving given to my increasingly-chaotic library. I do have my Diamond Select Aang figure flying over my dresser, so that's nice.
The best way to present it is to probably break it down by category:

As for what I don't own:
I didn't get any of the McFarlane toys because I didn't like some of their sculpts and the articulation was very low. Likewise, I dropped the Diamond Selects line because their sculpts were getting worse, their articulation had never been good, and once the McFarlane line came out I knew I'd have options. The BST AXN toys are the best yet, but they seem to be done with their line and haven't gotten to the Dangerous Ladies, so that's probably another false start. I'd just like a line of toys which collects all the major cast members in a cartoon-accurate standard style with enough articulation to do some martial arts poses. Is that too much to ask?
I also haven't bothered with the Korra comics or art books since I'm not a fan of the animated series. The stuff I've acquired for Korra literally came from someone at a convention shoving the product at me, hence that cardstock art print I can't identify.
I waver on whether to get the Avatar Legacy books, since their art looks nice but they have the 'smell' of non-canon material to them. I'd probably pick them up if something brings them to my attention while they're discounted, or if I receive them as gifts. I have absolutely no interest in the Avatar cookbook since I don't cook and, again, the 'lore' included probably isn't even close to canon. I might be interested in the Beasts book, but I need more info on it; I'd be interested in a real reference book or new material, but not something that just slaps some new art on the info already collected on the wiki. I don't care about the kiddie books.
All my signed items were obtained myself at various conventions and are made out to me by name. NYCC has been a big help there for the books, comics, and posters, although Baltimore Comic Con has pulled its weight, and I have to give big props to my local anime convention for getting me a Dante Basco signature for free, even if I didn't own a Blu-Ray set at the time to get signed. I attended a dual-signing at NYCC one year with Gene Yang and Faith Hicks, but I was the only one with an entire box full of stuff, so I had to narrow down the Yang stuff to just the first volumes of each trilogy in order not to get kicked out of line. And yes, I deliberately left out The Promise; I couldn't even get that one signed ironically.
I have a lot of Avatar Legends stuff for a game I'm never going to play because I have no friends. I backed the Kickstarter out of interest and support for the brand, and then I've gotten a bunch of free extra stuff via giveaways at NYCC, but I don't see the point in buying expansions/adventures for a game I'm not playing.

I saw your post of the whole Giselle post and I have been asking around and reading how people feel about the censorship and how certain fans handle the incident.
I saw you other post about the Kubo interview as from bits and pieces from what I got Kubo said Giselle was originally a man before transitioning and another interview said its how his fans interpret Giselle, but please dont take my word for it that's what I have been seeing and reading. But if you are curious here's a translation. Scroll down on the Bambis
https://missstormcaller.tumblr.com/post/181594990562/bleach-jet-artbook-talk-vol-4-translation
But in your opinion with characters like Yumickia, Giselle, Chizuru, Soi Fon and Charlotte who are trans or lgbtq coded how do you think they were handle? Were they good, decent, could they improved?
Well, okay then. Thanks
Personally it's both decent and could be improved. I like Yumi [except his transphobic line and unnecessary outing, fuck him] (and Charlotte too), he's pretty fun but hella underrated in terms of power and utilization in plot (oh you don't know how disappointed I am with the very lack of Yumi W considering I dig the interesting premise of his power-draining zanpakuto).
Sui (Soi Fon, but I prefer calling her with her Chinese name) fortunately got more depth beyond the "obsessed with Yoruichi-sama" fanon (fucking thanks fillers and omakes) and some cool fights (before being casted aside later on, but hey W is a W).
Chizuru, on the other hand, kinda fell to the "queers are all pervert" stigma on some occasions, which icks me a lot. I need to remind you that queers are not perfect and also not obligated to be good nice innocent etc etc, but pervert is pervert. Doesn't matter the gender or sexuality. (honestly she's ok, but personally I hate how Kubo made her pervert and likes doing non-consensual touchings to others)
Giselle is ... complicated. Decent and could very much be improved. Like, there are so many way to imply her being trans, but no, let's make a queer-coded character outing her in an open space where a lot of people could hear that. Besides, she icks me for being sexually abusive, like bdsm gone wrong without consent, and how it kinda checks on the "queers are pervert" stigma. Such a shame honestly because I like her contrasting personalities and subtle strategist self
You might want to check on this post and the other parts of the series because the account did a good job covering on the topic of queer-coded characters in Bleach.

Rukia and Renji's childhood friends - Info from BLEACH JET Booklet [Translation]
Tumblr media
Here is my translation of Kubo’s character sheet for Renji and Rukia’s childhood friends. I know a lot of people have always wanted to know their names but I think no one had shared this information among the western fanbase yet!
--------------
Once the outcome of the battle between Ichigo and Renji had been determined, chapter 98 is where Renji entrusts Ichigo with the rescue of Rukia. This is the character sheet of the three childhood friends who appeared in Renji's recollections during that moment. Character names, traits and so on are revealed to the world for the first time!
(From left to right)
藤丸 - Fujimaru
He is the tallest of the group.
Has a strong sense of responsibility and is the witty one.
小三郎 - Kosaburou
Quiet.
He is a hard worker despite his appearance.
マメ次 - Mameji
Is usually the butt of the joke.
Timid but good with numbers.
Translator’s Notes:
I believe Mameji gets his name from the fact that he’s small! ‘Mame’ is often used in Japanese for small things.

So depending on what Kubo said this art is about girls cheering up Ichigo.
Just now I noticed:
Even if Hime has a ring (on her left arm?), even if Ichihime are canon, Rukia is the one who's holding/touching Ichigo with her hand.
Cheering him up the most. Huh.
