The clan is patient with him, in the wake of Revallen's incredible loss. They let him be, let him hold Nessiava close and be alone in their shared grief. Food and water quietly left in their aravel, asking nothing of their breaking Keeper. The elders send a group to collect the dead, sneaking around the edges of the human village in the dead of night. They have the rest of the hunters, with what strength remains, dig the graves. They sing dirges for the fallen, while the First performs the funeral rites. The craftsmaster and his apprentice produce oaken staves, simple but lovingly crafted, and the halla keepers gather branches of cedar. With boundless affection and sorrow, the dead are laid to rest - Miren, Ghilen, Namavra, Juniel, Ilithra. The entire clan weeps, sharing the sorrow among them as they have done time and time again.

All of them treat those grieving with gentle kindness, and understanding, and patience.

And Revallen cannot stand it.

They should hate him. They should be furious at him. Him, their Keeper; he's responsible for every single soul in the Clan, in life *and in death.* And he couldn't even face the consequences of his negligence. He couldn't even face the rest of his grieving clan. His own miscalculation is what landed them in this mess - starving, clinging to the edge of the plains in a paltry little copse of trees, reduced to scraping tree bark and lichens, desparate enough for his own wife to approach the humans for help- and now, half of their hunters, dead and gone. His mistake has cost them everything. Has cost him everything.

The clan *must* be furious with him. He is too furious with himself to believe otherwise. He has made everything worse. The least he could do now to atone for his mistakes is lessen the clan's burden.

When the funeral rites are over and the dead are buried deep, when he can finally stand the guilt and resentment no longer, he leaves. He sings his daughter to sleep. He cannot bring himself to leave her. To rip from her not only one parent, but both at once - inutterable cruelty. He cannot bring himself to abandon the only living piece of his beloved, so he cradles her close and whispers a gentle sleeping spell into her fuzzy hair. Thus quieted, he wraps them both in a traveling cloak. He takes only his staff and a pack of the most basic of supplies; nothing to deprive the clan, just enough for his little girl. And under the cover of darkness and clever, subtle magic, he leaves. He pauses only to coax the plants to move, to lift some roots and bend a few branches, wiping away his trail.

Berapa lilin yang perlu kutiup hari ini?

Malam ini, ada empat lilin yang berdiri di hadapanku. Masing-masingnya, telah menancap tegas pada kue yang ditaruh di atas piring putih kesayanganku.

Sebelum akhirnya aku melanjutkan ritual malam ini, ada hal-hal yang ingin kusadari.

Pertama, fakta bahwa aku masih bernapas dan kini tengah terduduk sepi di hadapan lilin-lilin tegas dengan api muram. Dari sekian banyaknya doa yang kurapalkan, ini yang perlu aku sangat syukuri.

Namun—bernapas saja tidak cukup, bukan? Yang kedua, mindaku masih jauh dari kata sinting. Atau, mendekati namun aku masih diberkati? Dalam usia seperti ini, rasanya agak sulit membedakan telah-dikuasai gila atau masih-sepenuhnya waras. Namun walau begitu, dengan tulisan ini masih nyata dan tersaji sempurna di hadapan para Tuan dan Nyonya, syukurlah aku masih waras.

Ketiga—tubuhku masih utuh, walau lebam masih terlihat jelas. Namun luka-lukaku kini hampir mencapai kata sembuh. Berkat sentuhan jemari orang-orang terkasihku. Lalu perihal kuat—aku masih belum cukup kuat untuk berpijak kukuh pada badai yang menerpa tubuhku. Aku masih perlu bantuan tangan-tangan orang terkasihku. Namun, ya, dengan hadirku di sini.. katakanlah aku masih cukup kuat.

Dan yang terakhir, orang-orang terkasihku. Orang-orang terkasihku … bahagia sentosa, semoga berkat rapalan doa dan kelakar jahilku yang saban hari kulakukan. Senyumnya mengembang, matanya berkilau. Sudut-sudut gusi mereka terlihat jelas kala tertawa.

Nyatanya, ada banyak yang perlu kusyukuri di hari ini.

Malam ini nampak laiknya malam-malam lainnya. Namun yang berbeda adalah kini aku ditemani kue dan empat lilin warna warni. Kedua mataku terpejam, sebelum akhirnya diiringi rapalan doa-doa harapan.

Lilin biru, semoga aku kembali bertemu di hari ini dalam keadaan bernapas. Tidak dalam kondisi keluargaku berkabung ataupula hanya tersisa memoar tentangku; batu nisan, gundukan tanah dan setangkai bunga. Namun bila begitu akhirnya, semoga makamku dipenuhi kusuma indah favorit Bunda dan Kekasihku.

Lilin merah, semoga mindaku tetap terjaga dari kegilaan dunia yang menggadang-gadang. Bila nyawaku masih menyalak, kewarasan adalah hal kedua yang ingin kutaklukan. Bernapas dan tetap-waras ibarat sepasang sepatu. Bila salah satunya hilang—maka, enyahlah sudah. Hidup tanpa salah satunya sama saja dengan kematian, bukan?

Lilin hijau, semoga aku tambah kuat menghadapi manusia-manusia serupa iblis dan bahala yang tengah menanti. Setidaknya, aku ingin hidup tanpa menjadi beban untuk orang-orang di sekitarku. Lebam dan sayat tak lagi nampak—tidak lagi menanam cemas dalam hati orang-orang terkasihku.

Lalu, lilin kuning—lilin terakhir, semoga aku selalu berhasil melukiskan senyum dan gelak tawa pada orang-orang terkasihku. Biarkan air mata yang menitik dari sudut mataku, sesak menjegal tenggorokanku dan sendu milik orang-orang terkasihku yang singgah dalam diriku. Bahagia hanya milik orang-orang terkasihku—bahagianya ia bahagiaku juga.

Seusai merapalkan doa, aku langsung menghembuskan angin pelan-pelan dari bilah bibirku—membiarkan api muram pada lilin-lilin itu memadam.
