I've seen a few comments flying around about WWX and JC being close at one point and I just have to vent a little because I think so much is overlooked.

Let's simplify every so the people at the back can understand. Take away all the history they have, reverse the clock and lets have WWX grow up in a different sect or something like that. Now let's have JC and WWX meet...

Okay, now how are these to people ever going to be friends? They are almost polar opposites in every sense - and yes, while my friends are very different to me at times, our core values are similar, whereas JCs and WWXs are not. JC is always threatened by those who make him feel inferior - it's another reason he dislikes LWJ. So there's that hurdle to get over. Not to mention JC is a classist snob who does not like those he deems of a lower birth. Let's also note the fact WWX likes to stay positive and JC is a negative cloud of absolute mood killing vibes. They are simply incompatible and only got on because they were thrown together.

Those cling to the comment WWX said about always thinking JC would be by his side, that really should be taken with a pinch of salt in my opinion. WWX often glazes over things that are painful for him. WWX probably did think he'd be at the sect his whole life, but that wasn't necessarily out of fondness towards JC, it was out of duty and debt more than anything. He never really imagined a real future for himself until he got a second chance at life!

There is a very contradicting line when JC arrives at the burial mounds, when WWX thinks about a falling out was a long time coming. Because they are different and not that close. He didn't even expect him to help (even though it was his debt to pay), he already took Suibian (a sword he can no longer wield!) and his small amount of personal belongings to the burial mounds prior to that! It's a major clue he knew JC would be a dick about it all.

WWX meets JL and instantly notices all his bad traits, blaming JC and JZX. I'd say that's pretty damning evidence to the contrary to be honest.

It doesn't make WWX a bad person because he wasn't really a true friend to JC, people are allowed to not really get along with others and still be a nice person. Of course WWX cares for JC (a little) but it's hard to muster up such feelings when someone is pretty abusive towards you and doesn't support you at all. WWX is kind, but he's no fool.

WWX's actions when it comes to JC are mainly from a place of debt and there is nothing wrong with that. WWX makes the most out of a bad situation, and unfortunately this is no different. He's obligated to get along with JC in his first life, he chooses not to in his second, because that obligation is no longer there and he's had enough of the self centered ass.

Everyone has their own reasons why they are still WIPs :'). But rn the omegaverse shangcheng one bc it's almost done but my brain is fixated on the ruoyao one bc it's HUGE, so it won't focus on the other one and let me finish it already.

What does it usually look like when inspiration strikes for you?

It looks like me either forcing myself to work on something and finding my mojo along the way so I actually get a good chunk done... or opening yet another new file to pour down all my sudden ideas and feels for a new WIP :P

Do you curate playlists for each fic or is your process different?

Not really. I used to, but unless the mood of a song matches the story perfectly, I normally don't bother anymore or just put background jazz to cancel outside noises. If I'm very into a song at that moment, then I just play it and somehow my brain will manage to make it match what I'm writing XD

Do you go balls to the wall and write as you go or are you more organized?

Normally I just roll with it. I have a general idea of where is it going and how I want it to go and let Jesus take the wheel :'D. Only when I have WAY too many ideas for a fic that is going to be LONG I get organized with a proper structure and timeline, like the ruoyao one and the possibly two endings one.

Time travel Lan WangJi & Jin ZiXuan

How LWJ discover JZX time travelled too? Because one day, after spending months exchanging letters with WWX, YunmengJiang is flooded with courting gifts from LanLingJin and GusuLan, and LWJ is pretty sure this didn't happen in the past

Imagine Jiang FengMian doing his sect leader things and them a disciple come and say that two messengers are in the gate.

WWX and JYL come to see whats happened too and theres a WHOLE TWO carriage with gifts. The one from the Jins have a lot of recipe books, expensive incense's, simple but also expensive clothes, jelwery's and flowers.

GusuLan one have a lot of wine, poetry and exclusive study books, incense's, expensives red ribbons, a lot of spicy seasonings

LWJ and JZX just flooded the Sect with the gifts leaving FGM very confused, Jiang YanLi very flustered and WWX very suspicious

The Jin messenger says that their one is from Jin ZiXuan to Jiang Yanli, with a sorry letter also saying he will visit her soon

WWX is already cursing JZX on his head while FGM asks why there's a GusuLan carriage too, and the guy simple says is from Second Master Lan to Wei WuXian as a courting gift with a letter that says he also will go to Lotus Pier see WWX

Them WWX bugs and his mind go to another existence, while FGM just look at him with a confused chocked face

Both WWX and JYL are flustered and anxious now, FGM had to work about how he will handle this situation with YZY

I just think is so funny! Both of them never interact directly and JZX is a bit slow, he didn't think he time traveled but hes in another reality bcs in WHAT LIFE LWJ is a ROMANTIC? WITH WWX???

BTS in Order Addendum 2

Second and final addendum for rn! This covers the translated bts clips for June that I found. Sadly, the playlist did not have July or Aug, so I can't go over those. If I ever do find July and Aug, I'll try to add it on.

As before, the timeline posts are already updated. I'm just highlighting some things here for those who don't want to hunt for the updates. Also, I tried to clean up some of the formatting but y'all, the formatting on Tumblr is just weird. I can't figure it out and I'm not gonna invest the time to do so, so I've done my best!

I can see where the WZC/GG pairing came from. GG and WZC seem quite close, often playful, and similarly physically affectionate to ggdd. Their dynamic is different, but I can def see how people could pull together a compilation of their bts clips for CPFs. (Not saying they were a real couple, like ggdd.)

Madam Jin did not seem to realize she was cast in a bl adaption.

There's much mentioned of dd's afterglow on 6.19 after the Dragon Boat Festival date, but I've never seen anyone mention that GG is also in a really great mood the next day. His first scene is in the forest with JC and JL, and he's all smiles and says, "I'm so happy this early morning. I really love my team."

JC says "Happy? What nonsense!" For some reason, this sets gg off on the giggles.

Needless to say, GG had his own afterglow.

Also on 6.19, there's this cute exchange between gg and the older lady producer (?), who is also from Chongqing:

Crewmember: So many beauties come from Chongqing. GG: I'm beautiful. Producer lady: More beautiful than me? GG: How can that be? Can't compare!

And then, a couple days later on 6.23, when dd is still gone, gg is in a hellishly rotten mood. He's visibly moody and unresponsive to xl and JC, both of whom try to cheer him up. At one point, he asks someone (his assistant?) if he has any crying scenes that day. And later he says, "Remember this feeling. After a month, when filming, definitely will..." I think he says something more to XL here, but I guess it was too quiet for the translator to hear. The implication to me is that he's gonna try to bring up the experience of his feelings in later scenes when WWX is having similar feelings.

Not everything with regards to the boys has to be about ggdd, so it's possible that gg's bad mood is bc of something else going on in his life. Family, friends, something with his company, politics, a stranger being a jerk, whatever. DD's one possibility among many. I did check out what dd was doing on 6.23 and 6.22, and he's on Produce 101, where he looks as DD (with a mullet) as ever. But there aren't any bts or unscripted clips of him where he might reveal a similar mood, so it's hard to say anything.

So basically, make of gg's bad mood what you will. It could be literally anything.

I need to talk about JC's fake butt

So the clip on 6.25, with JZX, Mianmian, dd, XL, and gg all chatting starts with them talking about JC wearing a "fake butt". I'm guessing butt padding? Some highlights:

DD is confused because he's "not even wearing jeans", to which gg asks if it makes sense to wear a fake butt in jeans.

The "reason" why JC wears this is apparently only known to XL and GG. XL refuses to explain.

GG says if she doesn't explain, dd will just walk up to JC and ask him, "JC, you wear a fake butt?"

Poor WZC did seem a bit put-upon on the set.

Also, unrelated, dd thinks sweat is sexy.

Also, the nasal spray that got passed around: looked sus, but not actually that sus. It's a Thai herbal nasal inhaler, which apparently looks a lot like people doing some uppers. (So much so that gg chastises the cameraman for filming it and XL turns her back to do it)

Also also, gg's rotten mood is gone. The clip on 6.23 of him being in a bad mood is only about 5 min long, and there's only a 45sec clip for 6.24. So basically, we have no idea what might have cheered him up and there are almost a full 2 days of stuff we know nothing about.

Confused thoughts while reading again mdzs:

wwx and jc have a specific dynamic.

I am fairly sure ( but maybe I am wrong!) that jc never said that he hates wwx. That's actually wwx's assumption ( jc says to jl to kill demonic cultivators on sign = wwx thinks: "oh, jc hates me so much!!! :-(" I just think there's something to say about how jc must feel seeing his nephew near a demonic cultivator, while both jyl and jzx died because of demonic cultivation!)

wwx is very bitter and resentful! Meeting lsz, he thinks:"Although the GusuLan contributed greatly during the siege on him, at that time, these Juniors were either not born yet or still young children. He shouldn't direct his hate towards them ".

wwx doesn't want to engage or talk with jc (in their first meeting "Jiang Cheng pulled a curt smile on his face," Do you have anything to say to me? "[...] With a sincere tone, Wei WuXian replied," I don't know what to say to you " Jiang Cheng whispered," You never learn, do you?". Imo it's quite interesting that wwx says "thank you and sorry" to jl after this meeting)

wwx gives me the vibes of " It’s just sour grapes" ("Although he had always dreamed of returning to Lotus pier once more, he didn't want to go back to the tattered one nowadays!" ).

The narrator if in wwx's first life points out where wwx misunderstoods jc's moods ("As Wei WuXian saw his melancholy face, he thought that he was still annoyed at Jin ZiXuan's words" while we know that jc is sad because he is thinking about how jfm had never hurried to another sect in one day for anything related to him!), in wwx's second life, doesn't.

jc, 15 years old, while wwx and nhs talk about how cool is demonic cultivation :"That's enough. It's fine if you talk about it, but don't actually walk such crooked path". Sweetie, a big storm is coming for you!

"If he were Chang Ping, it wouldn't matter whether the Jin Clan of Lanling was a prominent clan who abused their power and could deceive the world as they willed. It wouldn't matter who promised him a future of glory and luxury--he would never give in. On the contrary, he would personally visit the dungeons at night and cut Xue Yang into pieces alive, then summon his spirit back to do it again, over and over, until the boy wished he'd never been born into this world. Instead, he would’ve went to the dungeons on his own, cut Xue Yang up so that he was nothing more than a puddle of flesh on the ground, and summoned his soul back to repeat the process to the point that he regretted ever being born in this world. But, not everyone was like him, preferring to perish together with his enemy. Cap30"I always forget that this exists!

[Relationship Building, awkward!JZX]

XuanLi | Mo Dao Zu Shi Modern AU 24-03-2021

I cannot stop picturing jzx as one of the most anxious and awkward person on earth, but he manages to hide it behind an attitude people will say he has because he's from the Jin family. He has been told over and over that he shouldn't be this anxious and awkward and to change it, so he hides it behind airs of being indifferent to people (but will internally scream in panic as he doesn't know what to do).

Now let's imagine that jsx and jyl are still engaged to each other since they were children, despite jsx not being interested in having a wife. As he grows up he's forced to pass more time with her on planned dates, yet they never do much.

Jsx nerves would barely leave him to interact much with someone he doesn't know anything about and doesn't seem interested either. He doesn't know anything about her that could maybe have her talk while he just listens. So he ends up convincing himself that jyl is just a bit sad and bland from these dates.

Then one day, for some reason, his attention is being dragged towards where jyl is sitting with her brothers. He then finds a smiling and laughing young lady, amused by whatever wwx was saying to her(of course it was to cheer her up from the yet again failed date).

This is something he had never really seen, only the polite and reserved young lady who doesn't speak much and has never smiled like THAT to him. And this is at that moment he falls for her smile and laughter, although this oblivious man doesn't know yet, want to also have a piece of that.

But the trick is to actually get closer to her, which isn't something he knows how to do, usually, people approach him and he somehow manages to deal with them (his way of doing so only makes people believe he's full of himself).

So the next time they go on a planned date he decides to /try/ and actually talk to her about more than the weather outside. She clearly seems caught off guard by the sudden change in these failure dates, but she takes it with a pleased smile.

The conversation is still a bit generic: school, family matters, her brothers (he notes that this is a subject that got her smiling a bit more) and what she has been to since last time. Most likely not the most interesting discussion of her life he believes, but that's the best he could come up with for now.

Yet she doesn't seem bored, her good mood and smile staying until the end, the both of them surprised when it's already time to part ways. jc, who came to pick her up, seems surprised to see her in such a good mood, tossing him a glance, before just taking her back home.

From here he also tries to interact more with her at school and not act as if they were strangers. He greets her when their path cross in the hallway, tries to team with her when teachers gives work to do in groups, leaving to the side the usual guys who usually just copy him. He even tries sometimes to go and sit down with her at lunch to talk, although most of the time he ends up finding an excuse to leave because his anxiety cannot stand jc and wwx staring at him. It is nearly as if they are ready to jump on the slightest mistake to push him away.

But the more they get to talk, the more he manages to learn about her, then leading to him feeling a bit more comfortable when he can bring up this subject. He learns that she loves cooking and food (good, better dates ideas then), but that she also shares an interest in art as wwx does.

Later he finds the nerve to ask her out for dinner, anxiously waiting for her answer as wwx looks at him suspiciously. She looks surprised, but accepts with a warm smile.

He takes her out to a fancy restaurant, because he was taught by his father this was the best way to please someone. Yet he notices quickly that this isn't necessarily putting jyl at ease. He learn after asking what kind of restaurant she prefers that she like smaller places that are a bit more familial.

He suggests they go somewhere of her choice next time. When they do he pass two hours worrying about his outfit, hoping it won't stand out too much.

Jyl is clearly more at ease, although the more unusual setting puts him on edge. She asks what he wants to try, giving him a suggestion he ends up following. When the time comes to give their orders jyl does it, giving him a knowing and reassuring smile, which helps him relax.

He doesn't understand what his father was on about the man needing to do everything not minding having jyl do things too. 

Trying to find a little restaurant becomes quickly a biweekly date, often helped by jyl when his awkwardness and anxiety got in the way. They don’t talk about that, not yet, but he knows jyl has noticed. He feels relieved when she doesn't comments on it or try pushing him to do things he doesn't feel capable of doing.

Then one day, when jyl is joining him at the meeting point (where he has accidentally arrived 20 min earlier) something seems off. Her smile seems forced and she looks as if she had been crying. He must have looked worried then because her smile waver a bit.

He awkwardly opens his arms, unsure what to do. He doesn't know if he has the right to outright take her in his arm, although he doesn't dare, he wouldn't want to be suddenly restrained if he was too anxious. As her eyes get teary again, she accepts the offer, burying her face against his chest so no one sees her cry. He hesitantly wraps his arms around her, rubbing his back in a manner that he hopes is soothing.

“Why don't we go get some tea or coffee instead?” he suggests as he spots a small cafe near them, seemingly calm enough for them to talk. When they get in he simply tells her to go and sit down, asking her what she wants. He goes to order, a tea and one hot chocolate (he's proud of not messing up in his order on the first try), then join her at the- booth when their orders are ready, even throwing in a little slice of cake he knows she will like (and he's proud and happy again that this managed to steal a small smile from her).

She's already calmed down when he joins her, sitting close to jyl. After asking what had upset her she finally explained the argument she had with wwx, things getting a bit out of hand. His guts twist a little bit when he learns it about him, not sure how he should take it, feeling like he would never get the brother's approval one day. Still, he reassure her, just knowing from what she told him before that wwx would apologise once she would go home.

They end up forgetting about the restaurant, jzx ending up talking a bit more about himself (for once) to change her mind, answering wonders she's been having for some time without asking him. They do brush over his anxiety, only then somewhat accepting that he /does/ have a problem with that (something he had tried to push away as no way his father would want him to have that).

They end up somewhat closer than before after that evening to talk more openly, showing more than the good and positive side they usually let through. This is to the joy of both their fathers, who had started to wonder if this marriage was really a good idea. After some time of everything kept on getting better, he even talked with jc and wwx (or rather, was forced to by these two), getting a warning of never breaking their sister's heart (which he took as their own way of approving him).

Jzx ends up officially asking her out when he remembers he has never actually done that, jyl rather amused at the act but clearly delighted that he decided to do it, making it meaningful by the fact that he was the one asking (contrary to just being engaged since childhood).

Then they finish their senior years, slowly getting ready to go to university. They are at a festival, having a great night. This is on their way back home, as jyl is holding his hand and talking about all they did and how she hopes they can go back the next years. This is when the sudden thought of “I want this all my life” flashes in his mind again.

He spontaneously proposed to her, telling her how he hoped they could be like this their whole life, declaring his love all over again. A deep blush spread over his face when he realises that they are /already/ engaged. Despite that, jyl tears up from joy, jumping in his arms as she accepts, laughing with him at how awkward and a bit out of left field it was, but she wouldn't have it any other way, it just proves her it does come from him, not from their fathers imposed choice.

(boy this has gotten so long, at this point I might as well write an actually long one-shot about it instead. Haven't written m/f in years tho, could be refreshing).

Editing pairings who are just not there in a show and are all about the potential, the “what if” is always something I am very impressed with. It does say that JL lives half and half at Lotus Pier and Koi Tower, but that doesn't mean JC babysat JL. When JZX and JYL died, JL was the legitimate successor to JGS, and there was literally no point in handing it over to brother of son's wife. Is Jin too needy to raise a baby? NO. JC is a single man with a temperament problem, not a master of parenting. Are you looking for a woman on LP now who can breastfeed Prince Jin? Please bring JL's nanny from KT. She takes care of him perfectly and JC only sees his nephew when he is in a good mood. Nonsense.

JL's position as heir was shaken when JGS died and JGY became the sect leader, but JGY still does not treat JL cruelly. JGY gives a dog to his “poor nephew who lost his parents” and spoils and pampers him to show people. Now that Rusong has passed away and JGY has no children, JL is once again in the position of heir apparent. JC is not obligated to educate JL at LP, just because he WANTS to do so.

Could you give me some fics with general Wei Wuxian? There was one particular story with him being an awesome General who cares more about his soldiers and the lives of the people he's protecting and thus deciding to surrender rather than fight fully knowing that they would not be able to win. So you know how theres this TikTok Sound of someone called Nick who asks for the WLAN Password and its I Love You Nick and Nick is in a lot of denial about being lovers even though their anniversary is coming up?

I found a fic that was basically WY and LZ in a relationship, and WY/LZ (but more likely WY) didn’t realise that they were anything more than friends, and it was very funny.

i said 5 months ago i was gonna share my thoughts on this scene and never did, so it's time to dig this out

what did wei wuxian mean by asking shijie "why would someone like another person" and why i.... don't think he's talking about lan wangji (i know-- i know. just bear with me)

or more accurately: an analysis of chapter 71, wwx's thoughts on love, and how mxtx utilizes parallels between past and present!

okay let's get straight to the point that's gonna make y'all want to call me a stupid bitch who can't read: i legitimately do not think wwx was talking about lwj in this scene! here's why:

first and foremost, let's remember what the status of wangxian's relationship was at this point after sunshot ended

first, phoenix mountain: a callback to their teen dynamic. wwx's silly and flirty personality is back, he teases lwj by throwing a peony at him then asking to borrow his ribbon. lwj is frustrated, etc. lwj forcefully kisses wwx then gets angry at himself. wwx finds him and gets worried that something happened to him. they walk together and talk in very friendly manner until the xuanli incident happens. by the end they part on good terms

then, yunmeng teahouse: the first scene of this chapter. wwx is feeling quite upbeat about seeing lwj as they had a nice chat last time they met. he does a lil phoenix mountan callback by throwing a peony at him, then asking him to come upstairs and hang out. lwj does but it.... doesnt end well. he's worried about wwx's worsening temper and fears he's starting to show signs of loss of control, and asks him once again to go to gusu with him. that severely sours wwx's mood, to the point of snapping at lwj when lwj implies that he'll regret it in the future. lwj realizes his mistake and they become polite again, but the atmosphere is significantly strained, and wwx even comments that he was presumptious and shouldn't have invited him over, which lwj dissents. wwx parts with a cordial but distant "thank you", and on... not great terms

what i think really makes the above hurt though is that, when wwx comes back to yunmeng and jc asks who he met. wwx answers this:

so, it really is quite tragic. wwx had a nice time with lwj in phoenix mountain, and because of that he wanted to try and wash away their bad blood, ask him to hang out, recall some stories of their youth, maybe mend this relationship that became so strained during the war! what happens instead is that... he gets the harsh reminder of what (in his mind) lwj thinks of his cultivation, thinks he's not in control of it, that it's dangerous and he should be locked up. with that, they're all back to square one :(

the thing is, MDZS is quite known for being non-linear and having a humongous amount of flashbacks, and they're all set and positioned at the time they were for a reason! the thing is, as most read the novel once and then proceed to only revisit scenes separately, naturally forgetting about the grand-picture and the scenes that come before and after, we might misremember how some events play out or the state of the character arcs and relationships, and i believe the popular fanon interpretation that "omggg wwx was asking yanli this bc he likes lwj but can't admit this yet!!!! 🙈" is quite of a great example of this

but!! it's not for any bad reason, after all both the Audio Drama and CQL kinda play up this moment with some beautiful background music. this is, in the end, a romance novel! but let's put a pin on that for a bit and analyze what led to this scene, and why WWX came looking for shijie to ask her this

so as you see, the scene right before was wei wuxian and jiang cheng talking about jin zixuan, with jc asking wwx to not pick fights with him anymore since he's the heir of lanling jin. wwx is baffled because up until that point he and jc were trashtalking buddies when it came to jzx, but there's nothing they can do about it if shijie still likes him

that... makes wwx quite speechless, and he goes searching for her to get an answer. in his mind, jzx is still an awful, undeserving person! so why would shijie like him so much?

why would someone like another person?

of course, he's not as shameless to ask shijie right to her face why she likes someone like jzx, esp since she's already well familiar with his poor opinion of him, so he tries getting an "unbiased" answer by making a vague question, which in turn makes shijie think wwx is in love with someone else

now here's the thing: i feel like fandom tends to flanderize wwx when it comes to his unreliable narration, awareness of his own feelings or lan wangji's. we don't have time to get into that now, but if you've followed me for a while you know my thoughts on this

but here, specifically, i do not think wwx is in "denial about his crush" or "waving off because he doesnt want to get caught". his answer feels genuine, and honestly? really sad once you think about it

"I won't like anyone, at least not too much. Wouldn't it be like putting a rein on my own neck?"

this isn't strange once you consider the types of romantic relationships he grew up observing. other than his own parents', which he's mostly forgotten about, a strong love and attatchment sounds more like tying a rope around your neck. even though wwx is a romantic at heart who flirts easily but had been saving his first kiss for 20 years, he's still never felt this type of love for anyone before, and can't imagine putting himself through it

"So, wait... just because WWX said so you think you should believe it? You're telling me the curtains are just blue? If he's not talking about Lan Wangji, then what's the point of this scene?"

you see, something that MXTX does quite often with the flashback placement in MDZS is contrast the moments where wangxian's relationship was at its best with moments where it was at its worst. As wwx recall these memories, his pre-conceived notions about lwj get challenged and his actions and words get recontextualized! my favorite example is probably the ending of the flashback of wwx's return, to him waking up in the cloud recesses

no i'll never shut up about this flashback placement. my goddd

so, when looking at the "why would someone like another person" scene, i ask you to not look at it by itself, but as a part of the literary work that mdzs is! because, as the wangxian of the past are stuck in this cordial, but strained relationship, do you remember where the wangxian of the present have currently been left at?

if you ask me, there is something incredibly sweet about leaving these characters at their most tender --- when one is finally beginning to not only understand his own feelings, but to suspect that those feelings are requited, in which he's allowing himself to imagine a calm and happy future with him right as they march inside the lion's den --- and meeting them again when they're younger, and strained, and not fully knowing how to communicate that they care for each other, which in turn only hurts them both.

there is something very sweet about seeing wwx who is slowly realizing that he's in love, testing the waters of that, seeing how much he can take, in what ways he can ask for affection, and then seeing him again as he says "i won't ever like someone, at least not so much. wouldnt it be suffocating? wouldn't it be an impediment? wouldnt it be shackling yourself?" because you, like a cheeky grandma, can look at him and think: you don't know yet, but i've seen you then. you will like someone very much, and it won't be restraining. in fact, you'll never feel more free...

and that is the biggest thing, about revisiting this scene after you're done. because you'll look back this 20-something WWX who genuinely believed loving someone to much is like putting a rein around his own neck... and knowing he'll know a love that not only will not feel like a restrain*, but will be there to catch him whenever something does

Some thoughts on the relationship between JGS and MS, and the potential implications for JGY.

Meng Shi was over the age of twenty when she met JGS, and knew she only had a few years left at best as a popular prostitute (Ch 105). Anxin speculates that MS has JGY despite the risks because she 'just wanted to get out'. There's a strong implication that Anxin thinks MS got pregnant on purpose. Anxin's account is unreliable considering the way she treats MS and JGY, but on the face of it this isn't implausible. Maybe MS, knowing penury awaited her in a few short years, decided to 'baby trap' JGS (a horrible expression I know) in an attempt to guarantee her future security.

But this doesn't ring true for me precisely because MS was over the age of twenty when she met JGS. At minimum she had been working as a prostitute for several years. She must have encountered many men, some of whom likely did ply her with sweet talk, and most of whom would have been wealthy and decently positioned in society even if they weren't as powerful as JGS. I just don't believe that a woman who had lived the life she had up to that point would be naive in that particular way. There was certainly an element of naiveté to her faith in JGS and his promises, but we know they spent 'days' together and he gave her a token in the form of a pearl button (Ch 48). We know that outside the Jin Clan where (exceptionally) such items are common, the pearl button has the appearance of a valuable token and she would therefore have no reason to doubt its significance. Taking that into account, her behaviour makes much more sense and is more consistent with her personal history.

We also know JGS regularly gave out pearl buttons to women he slept with, 'often in the accompaniment of pledges and vows as well' (Ch 48, EXR). We aren't told exactly what he promised MS but I think it's a reasonable inference that he promised her something that made her feel secure enough to commit to having his child. Specifically, it's likely he promised her he'd make her an official concubine. This would mean that JGY should have been born a legitimate child—of lower status than JZX the son of the wife, but not a bastard, and included in the line of succession. Laws and conventions around concubinage varied throughout history, but the sons of official concubines are considered legitimate (with varying status), and we can also look to the example of NHS for how sons of official concubines are treated in this particular setting. (Yes NHS' mother being a concubine is an extracanonical detail direct from MXTX, and yes I do think it's therefore perfectly fair to point out that there's an argument to be made that the text itself supports alternative readings—but I'm mentioning him for the sake of argument since we have no other meaningful examples one way or the other.)

I personally don't think the text supports a reading where MS went ahead with the pregnancy in the hope that it would tie JGS more tightly to her. I think she must have known it was a huge risk but she went ahead with it because she had been given assurances she had no reason not to trust. She was desperate rather than naive, and she put her faith in someone who didn't deserve it. We're not given enough information about what MS subsequently thought of JGS to draw firm conclusions: maybe she continued to believe he'd return, or maybe she knew he'd never come back for them but wanted to instil that faith in JGY so he'd be driven to gain a place with his father. Maybe she went back and forth depending on the day and her mood.

But setting aside what MS really ended up thinking of JGS and exactly how clear-eyed her private hopes for JGY were, what really interests me is that if JGS did promise he would make her an official concubine then all she and JGY are ever asking for is what was already promised. JGS might not have intended to keep the promises he made her, especially considering his ferocious wife, but he made them nonetheless. In attempting to gain recognition, JGY is only attempting to get his father to keep his word. The fact that countless other women and children are out there in the same situation, having also been made promises JGS never intended to keep, is relevant only in the sense that it shows how widespread this mistreatment is. Every character (including such supposed moral sticklers as NMJ) accepts that JGS is going to make women promises and then abandon them and they and the children have no recourse, but that doesn't mean JGY isn't still technically entitled to what was promised even if it doesn't help him at all in practice. After being kicked down the stairs JGY accepts that his birthright is not enough and he'll also need to prove himself, but he never forgets what his father owed him and it really does remain the heart of his anger:

"Why is it that even though we were born on the same day, Jin GuangShan could host a grand banquet for one son, and watch with his own eyes how his subordinate kicked his other son down Koi Tower, from the first stair to the last!"

He finally revealed the hatred hidden deep within him. It wasn’t directed at neither Jin ZiXuan nor Wei WuXian, but rather his own father. (Ch 106, EXR)

There's a lot of discussion around the infamous 'forget it' line (Ch 106, 118) but to me it's notable that when JGY finally reveals the depths of his hatred it's the initial rejection he returns to: a point at which he hadn't 'earned' his place with the Jin. He then had to go above and beyond, saving the Sunshot Campaign from defeat, carrying out his father's heinous orders, enduring years of abuse and humiliation, all in order to 'earn' a hollow and superficial form of legitimacy instead. Perhaps JGY isn't bitter simply because he was born a bastard and JZX wasn't. Perhaps he's also bitter because he was denied the legitimacy he was originally entitled to by the supposed rules of their society.
