My customer is from Paris, France and has Caribbean/Jamaican heritage with a large portion of her family living in Jamaica and the rest of her family living in a large French townhouse. She also has a studio apartment in New York where she lives for most of the year when she isn’t visiting her family in Paris.

My customer is 34 years old, she spent most of her childhood growing up in the Caribbean with her family. Her and her family moved to Paris when she was age 14 due to a business opportunity for her father, so she has spent most of her life in France.

As she has had a successful career so far and her parents own a successful business, she can afford to wear upper high street clothes and often ready-to-wear garments. Some of her favourite brands include Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Prada etc. She also likes thrifting and going to second hand shops for clothes. For her music videos, she commissions seamstresses to make outfits, after these have been used, she usually gets them remade so she can wear them again. She is a seasonal shopper and when she no longer wants clothes that she wears, she either sells them or donates them to charity as she doesn’t agree with fast fashion and is very passionate about making the fashion industry more sustainable.

She is very involved in her work life, she is always making music and coming up with ideas for her band's music videos. She likes to stay at home and chill with her roommate. She loves painting and watching sci-fi films/series especially from the 60s. She is often scouted by model scouts and fashion photographers for her unique looks but has no interest in the modelling industry as she is aware of the toxicity that happens within it. Her main profession is being a singer in a French indie-pop band.

She currently aspires to wear haute couture especially an Avant-garde couture garment. She looks up to highly influential designers such as Iris Van Herpen, Thierry Mugler and Yohji Yamamoto.

Binkie’s passion is infectious – we are lucky to have him as a partner for both education and bird tourism!!! Recently retired, Binkie is also a certified bird guide – he took our Caribbean Birding Trail Guide Training Workshop in 2016 and has been helping visitors and residents alike to find and enjoy birds on his home island. Martin, educating hundreds of youth and community members about the beauty and value of our birds. Since then Binkie has been putting what he learned to excellent use in S int Maarten/ St. We first met Binkie van Es in 2014 when he attended our BirdSleuth Caribbean International Training Workshop, an innovative education program that reaches thousands of youth across 18 islands. A/N: This was inspired by a suggestion from my lovely friend @subjectac7 and the fact i watched black widow and No time to die in the same day. At some point i may actually write a part 2

At this point the amount of times you had “retired” was comical. When you had gone into M’s office and placed down the paper officially giving your notice for retirement he’d nearly laughed.

“Retiring again so soon 007? It’s only been a year and a half since the last time,”

his hand swished the contents of his shot glass while he kicked his feet on the table.

“Where is it this time? Jamaica? No no I believe we’ve already soul searched Jamaica. How about Australia? They have many islands where you can live out your days in a cabana, making love to women and drinking your martinis; Shaken not stirred. That is, of course, until some world saving mission drags you back and you humour us for another couple years,”

You screwed up your face at his words. You knew they were true. Despite all attempts to let your license to kill expire, you always wound up back here. In M’s office, feebly attempting to impress Moneypenny with your scarily accurate aim and poking fun at Q as he fitted you with new toys for supposed “suicide” mission. Because despite all your skill and innumerable declarations of death there were two things you knew for certain in this ever changing world: the greed of mankind would never cease to amaze. And this was a business you were never free of until you truly stopped breathing.

Still, you tried. Abs here you were. Not in Jamaica or Australia, but Norway. You had contacted many “friends” and set up a completely self sustaining home in a small town in Norway.

You were on your way to town. Your grey Aston Martin stowed away in the garage and traded for a simpler jeep. An older jeep but still a jeep. The car hummed loudly as cool air whipped through your loose hair. It was chilly, being September, but it felt good. Today was Friday. Fish Fry Friday. The day of the week your favourite restaurant opted for a more British approach to handling their fish. So trading in your normal canned soup for fresh caught fish and chips you'd climbed into the car and made the small journey to town.

Your Jeep came to a loud stop as you pulled into the restaurant parking lot. You stepped out into the night, wrapping your arms around yourself and pulling your puffy coat tighter to your goose bump speckled skin. Your hand reached for the door knob and you jiggled it. You found it to be locked. Your head turned over your shoulder where the neon “open” sign announced it was open for business. It was dead, and on the other side of the glass a message was taped.

“Sorry, Usual fish fry canceled due to shortage of catches today. Come again nect week”

You groaned deeply and kicked the ground. Hungry and defeated your eyes turned to the only place that would still be open this late. You dragged your feet as you walked into the beer stained, stuffy bar.

“One scotch, on the rocks,”

The bartender nodded and poured you a glass of scotch. You nodded and handed them the cash, scanning the bar for a place to sit. As you scanned your eyes landed on a red head in a long sleeve grey shirt. Even through the long sleeves her toned muscles were obvious. Normally you weren't attracted to women with strength that threatened to match your own, though you certainly had no objection to it. You took your glass and sauntered over to the table she was sat at.

“Mind if I join you?”

She looked up, ready to object, then realising this truly was the only open seat in the packed bar nodded a yes.

“Drinking alone?”

Her unfriendly demeanor had been so strong that when she willingly started a conversation it surprised.

“We’re all sharing a drink called loneliness, but it's better than drinking alone.”

She screwed up her face at the comment.

“You don't seem the Billy Joel type I must say,”

You laughed and took a sip of your drink.

“I’m not. Just someone who drinks in bars a lot. Piano man is a particular favourite of struggling performers who hope to make it big just like good ole Billy.”

She laughed, and the reaction surprised you more than even her starting the conversation.

“Never seen you around here before. You new, Queen Elisabeth?”

You rolled your eyes at the knock on your accent.

“As you so kindly pointed out, I’m not from around here.”

You knew your British accent did not blend at all with the friendly tone of the Norwegian’s.

“I moved to an off grid cabin about two months ago. What about you,”

You weren’t going to mention it but her accent was obviously American born and bred. There was something off about it though. Something that greatly rubbed you the wrong way but you couldn’t place.

“Ah yes. I’m from America. I moved up here for college three years ago and decided to stay after I graduated. I actually live in an airstream about 10 miles west of town,”

You nodded and took a sip of your drink. You realised suddenly that the two of you might be neighbours. The man who had set you up with the house had mentioned a few others lived in clearings of the wooded areas in the few miles that surrounded your house.

“That’s funny… I live out there too. Maybe we're neighbours,”

You both wanted to laugh at the comment but something about the unlikeliness of that coincidence had your guard up. Then she laughed and startled you greatly as a hand was set on your shoulder.

“Sorry I just realised. I forgot to ask your name,”

She smiled at you expectantly. You pondered the seemingly innocent request.

“Bond. Y/N Bond,”

She contemplated for a moment then reached out a hand.

“Natalia Rachmaninoff,”

You took her hand and shook it firmly.

“Like the composer?”

She just laughed at the comment and took a sip of her drink. The highly Russian origins of her name had your brain putting pieces together. Then it hit you. The tinge to her voice that you couldn’t quite place. All the skills in the world could never hide the round throaty accent of Russians from its almost polar opposite of an American accent. You downed the rest of your drink and then set it on the table.

“Your name is very slavic for being an American. Your family from there?”

Her eyes widened and though she controlled her breathing you could see a slight shake to her.

“Yes. My mother came from a town few miles west of St. Petersburg.”

You nodded and looked at her with an unimpressed face. Her lies weren’t believable. Whoever she was she wasn’t American but she definitely was a novice.

“Mhm. So are you going to tell me who you really are and who you are working for?”

You were met with an answer just not the one you wanted. She stood up and overturned the table moving to run towards the door. Yells were heard as the other people in the bar watched her run. No one parted the way and thus she was slowed down. You nearly caught up to her, slowed by the crowded bar as well.

She ripped open the door and ran out into the night. You reached for a gun at your hollister but since moving to Norway you’d lost the habit of carrying one. Natalia sprinted off towards a white land rover at an impressive pace.

You threw open the door of your jeep, pulled the pistol from under your driver's seat, and chased after her. Though she was quick you caught up to her just as fast. With the gun in your right hand you dove and trapped her legs with your arms pulling her to the ground. She grunted as her hand hit the ground, stopping herself. You let go and moved to train the gun on her head.

She kicked violently, knocking the pistol from your hands and threw herself so she was crouched. A movement you couldn’t do from the sheer amount of momentum you’d have to build and execute from your core. She trained a gun you hadn’t seen her get on your forehead.

You reached for the gun that had dropped from your grasp. Her foot stepped on your wrist. Your teeth gritted in pain. From the angle she could easily snap your wrist if it wasn’t fractured already.

“you get one chance. Tell me who you are working under or I blow a hole in your pretty face,”

She leaned down, sitting on your chest but her foot kept firmly planted against your wrist.

“you really think I’m pretty?”

She pressed in more and shifted so her weight was more on your chest. You gritted your teeth and growled.

“I don’t work for anyone. I retired but before i worked for MI6,”

Her eyes widened and she let up a bit. A rookie mistake. With a buck of your hips she fell forward. You trapped an arm and in a moment she was below you.

“Now this was more of the position I thought we’d be in tonight,”

She rolled her eyes and squirmed. Your weight was just too much for her to escape.

Your hands removed the gun from her hands and soon you have two guns on her. You placed them both on her temples and grinned.

“you get one chance. Tell me who you are working under or I blow a hole in your pretty face”

you repeated in a mocking tone. She growled and shifted up but you pressed the gun into her head to remind her it was there.

“I don’t work for anyone either. I-I’m trying to defect. I was trained as an agent for the KGB but I want to go to the US. Work for the agency there,”

Her features remained the same but some kind of pain swam in her eyes. She had a deeply emotional reason for this choice. No one left the KGB without being talented as fuck. Most wouldn’t risk it without a sincerely good reason.

You didn't let up off her but dropped the guns from her face and she relaxed under your weight letting out a huff.

“Well shit…”

She laughed and nodded.

“Shit indeed.”

Everything in you told you not to trust her. Trust the woman who by birth was against your country. Everything but your gut. The very thing you'd trusted and found love in. But you'd also buried that love. Even so you shifted your weight and kicked your legs out standing up. You reached out a hand.

“Always the cycle,” you muttered to yourself, “ I believe we have a good deal to talk about Rachmaninoff.”

She took the hand and vaulted herself up.

“Call me Romanoff.”

Can you explain how a slave revolt in the Bahamas could have changed the history of America?

HELLO ANON FROM LIKE FOUR MONTHS AGO! I kept meaning to go back to this and then uhhh forgetting to do that. (Also thank you for indulging me and sending this sort-of-directly-asked-for-question lmao)

So. Here’s a brief overview of how a successful slave revolt like in Black Sails could have changed the history of not just America, but the entire world. And quite, well - easily - had the circumstances in Black Sails presented themselves.

First off, standard disclaimer that this is all conjecture based on my own research and knowledge of both history and Black Sails. It isn’t meant as a takedown of anyone else’s views, or the character’s actions. The strongest I would call this is a wishful critique of the choices the writers made to include the things they did in the way they were included, and the way those same writers chose to end the story they chose to tell. And maybe, a little bit, a frustration of how the inevitability of american history is used as a given in fandom to defend certain character’s actions - but it is not meant to invalidate the reasons behind those actions. Just to point out that those reasons were more emotionally than factually driven (Which is cool! And very real to the kinds of tragedies that play out in real life revolutions! Vive le realismé!)

Also quite obviously I’m not a professional in any way. I was eating soup from a can as I wrote this. I am now eating cookies for dinner. I am writing this because it’s fun for me. It’s fun!! If deep thought-experiment type analysis of media isn’t your cuppa, that’s fine - you can keep scrolling.

I’ve included major historical events from 1700-1740 since that is the general time period that Black Sails draws its history from. In particular, most of the later seasons’ historical references come from the 1730s. While I’ve tried to be as thorough as possible...there are so many ways history could have been changed by a tiny action that it would be impossible to cover them all. For brevity, I’m focusing on the history of the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Colonial America. I’ll touch on other places as is relevant but like......it’s world history for a reason.

Okay, here goes.

So first and foremost, to understand how it’s destruction could have changed America, you really need to understand just how much economic power chattel slavery gave colonial empires and England in particular.

Slavery was the most important economic force in Colonial England, and not just in what the slaves produced. The slave trade itself was the most lucrative business in existence at the time. If you want to learn more about that, I highly recommend listening to this podcast, which does an excellent job of explaining how the economic buying and selling and bonding of slaves was of such value to colonial empires. This is important because the most powerful contemporary argument for the continuation of slavery was that it “could not be ended in the Americas until there was certainty that it wouldn’t create social or economic irritation.” (Thomas Jefferson, 1783.)

(Slavery in itself is not something that was unique to the british empire or even the Imperialist governments that created it. Most cultures have had some form of slavery. However, this was not the type of generational slavery that colonial empires employed. In most cases before the 1400s, slaves were not kept slaves solely based on the color of their skin - they were war prisoners, criminals, or debtors. In most cases, slaves could work to buy their freedom, and most importantly, slavery was not an inherited state that passed from parent to child.

What we think of in terms of colonial slavery is chattel slavery - which is the kind of slavery Europeans imposed on Africans starting in the fifteenth century. These slaves could not buy their freedom. They were viewed as property instead of human beings based on their race and their children were automatically enslaved in the same way they were. They were mistreated, and viewed as subhuman, without any chance of escaping the bonds which had been forced upon them.

Because of this new type of slavery that started in the colonial era, Europeans needed to justify why they were entitled to own other people as slaves. They needed to convince themselves and other people that there was some moral justification for chattel slavery. This is what led to all the myths of ‘happy’ servitude, racial inferiority, and any ‘benefits’ slavery imparted to slaves. These were all lies created by philosophical thinkers and plantation owners and politicians that let settlers convince themselves they were not committing crimes of immense magnitude against other human beings. For much of the colonial era, these were the norm in thinking and their vestiges still linger today. But these were used to justify slavery because of how important it was economically.

And of course there were always dissenters. Since slavery was first introduced to the colonies there were people who knew that this sort of treatment was just not very gucci. These people argued that slavery went against the very nature of a ‘just’ society. That benefitting off the mistreatment of other human beings was akin to spiritual robbery, and that “European colonies should be destroyed rather than create so many unfortunates!” (Louis Jaucourt, 1754). With your goddamn motherfucking chest Jaucourt. The Quakers of Pennsylvania were strong proponents of abolition since the 1670’s! James Oglethorpe(yes, that Oglethorpe) himself was a staunch abolitionist who went as far as to make slavery illegal in Georgia when he formed the colony in 1733.

The economic power of slavery was used as a justification to keep it intact for hundreds of years and many colonists were happy with this, but it’s important to remember that not everyone was. England and the colonists were far from unanimously in support of the practice. This becomes important later! Like, this is the basis for the whole argument of how a drawn out war in the Bahamas could have ended slavery and changed colonial imperialism.)

OKAY NOW THAT WE’VE GOT THAT COVERED.

Now let’s go to the people it affected. Enslaved black people have been fighting against their enslavement since they were taken from their homes and brought across the Atlantic in the 15th century. Starting in the 1700s, slave revolts started to see more and more success in these efforts, until in the late 1700s and early 1800s public opinion of slavery finally dropped enough that it was outlawed in the colonial empires of England and France. In the years of 1700-1740, there were several rebellions in the North American area including:

1712 New York Slave Revolt (British Province of New York)

1730 Chesapeake rebellion (British Chesapeake Colonies)

1733 St. John Slave Revolt (Danish Saint John)

1739 Stono Rebellion ((British Province of South Carolina)

1741 New York Conspiracy (British Province of New York)

And of course,

1728-1739 First Maroon War (British Jamaica)

This is the war which the war in Black Sails is based on. The treaty that was offered by Woodes Rogers in Black Sails is almost word for word(minus the pirates bit) the treaty offered to the Leeward Maroons in this war. There are references to the factions in this war and even some of the historical people involved in it. The major difference? The Maroon war was successful. The Maroons were so good at warfare on their turf that the British were unable to sustain any major victories against them. After ten years they offered the Maroons a treaty granting them governmental agency(although not independence). In return, the Maroons agreed to return any escaped slaves back to the British, and to help the British fight off “invaders”. The Leeward maroons led by Cudjoe(Julius, in Black Sails) took this offer to avoid more fighting because he believed in an honorable peace with the enemy. Queen Nanny and her Windward Maroons(The Maroon Queen and Madi in Black Sails) refused because like....bruh those terms suck. After a year she was pressured into relenting by Cudjoe, but within thirty years the Maroons had started another war, dissatisfied with how the treaty was being carried out.

(This is Queen Nanny. And yes, she is better than you.)

I also need to mention that Africans were not the only ones in North America hurt by British Colonialism, nor the only ones for whom abolition and an end to colonial empire was attractive. The Native Americans were also a constant frustration to the colonies, and, because it’s relevant to later things, I want to mention one incident in particular:

The Yamasee War (1715-1717)

The Yamasee were a Lower Creek tribe that lived in what is today Georgia/Florida. The war was fought over a bunch of different things, including trading systems and colonists depleting the game in the area, but also because of the colonists’ nasty habit of trying to enslave Native American people. Bummer. So a bunch of tribes(and I mean a bunch - there were Shawnee and Cherokee factions, as well as about half a dozen other distinct nations that joined in the fight in sort of that loose ‘hey you hate these guys? we hate these guys!’ way.)

Long story short, this war was a pretty significant factor in the colonists in the South not enslaving(outright) Native Americans anymore, and instead increasing the import of African slaves to the south. After this war the Yamasee split into two factions, one anti-colonist and one pro-colonist. The pro-colonist people called themselves the Yamacraw, and it was these people who granted Oglethorpe(yes, that Oglethorpe) the land which he used to found Georgia. Moral of the story, alliances between abolitionists and indigenous tribes were already in place in the colonies. Just waiting for a chance to be used.

(Yet ANOTHER thing to keep in mind is that before the end of the 18th century, both Haiti and Grenada would see major revolutions against their colonial empires. Slaves in all provinces and colonies were continually fighting for their freedom. What they lacked was a unifying force that supplied them enough power and cohesion to fight the empire man-to-man, so to speak.)

SO. INTO THIS SCENE, ENTER JAMES FLINT - ANGRIEST OF MLM SCALLYWAGS AND TACTICIAN EXTRAORDINAIRE.

Anyway, the Golden Age of Piracy was largely over by the early 1720 - most of the pirates of Nassau took Rogers’ pardon and reintegrated as citizens of society. That or they like....died. A lot of them died. Gruesomely. Nasty business, piratry. So, if we assume that in Black Sails’ history that Flint and Silver managed to convince the Maroons to rebel ten years earlier, join with the pirates who did not want to assimilate, and start a revolution; now instead of two separate wars Britain is now fighting one much bigger, nastier, more expensive one.

Backed by people with a good deal of money at their disposal. Cha-ching.

Keep in mind that Britain had already been at war for almost thirty years with first the Glorious Revolution and the Jacobite risings(1688-forever) and the War of Spanish Succession(1701-1714). Their resources had already been depleted. And this was why the American colonies(and India) had become so important to them. Remember what I said about the economic importance of slavery? It’s because Brtitain was using the slave trade to refill its coffers after an extensive and costly military campaign.

So now, this new war is not only putting an additional drain on the empire’s resources before Britain has had a chance to replenish itself but it is also taking away the very source of income needed to replenish itself. (Since the war would target places heavy with slave trading.) In addition, the pirates handed a significant defeat to the British Navy that ended with the Navy retreating - turning tail and running from the island. This was actually a huge victory and one that was sort of downplayed in the show but would be incredibly significant in the event of a long campaign.

Rogers is not taking Nassau with the full support of Britain. He is only fighting with the traitors who did not return when the Navy withdrew. That is why he has to go to Spain in the first place.

The show has also told us that this rebellion is already starting to be widely known - pirates and slaves from Barbados, the Bahamas, as far as Massachusetts are coming to aid the rebellion in the hopes of freedom. This is not a small thing.

Even with the loss of the Walrus and most of the Walrus crew, there are still thousands of fighters on the Maroon Island. Slaves, mainland pirates - the defeat of the Walrus was a personal defeat but in the grand scheme of a larger war it was a small loss in what was ultimately a huge victory.

Rogers has been squarely defeated. Because of that, they now have Nassau as a base. The war now has two strongholds - one protected by the forest and one protected by a fort - into which they can store supplies, retreat, and organize attacks from. If they can free the rest of the slaves on the island of Nassau and either oust or convert the puritans, all the better.

The war at the point Rogers is defeated was far from a never-ending thing. In fact I would say that Flint is absolutely right - they are incredibly close to a decisive victory. England cannot afford to muster a large enough force to defeat two entrenched enemies working together - especially ones as well financed as we’re led to believe the chest would make the Maroons and Pirates. Even if Britain could somehow convince Spain and/or France to join them, both of those nations have also been severely depleted by wars of their own. And again, the more nations that Britain brings in, the more potentially disaffected people could be brought in to join the pirates(see, Haiti and Grenada specifically, both of which were French colonies at the time, and the Spanish colonies of Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc).

So from here, the smartest thing for the rebellion to do would be to hit large plantations: to both free the slaves and cripple Britain’s economy. Make slavery more costly to enforce than it is profitable to sustain, and build their numbers for the war as well, as well as like, you know, freeing slaves. Make it so that Britain could not sustain the cost of trying to fight it - as James said all the way back in 1705. Force a surrender on economic grounds.

So now, the power behind the empire has been broken. Even assuming a modest victory, the course of the entire world - not just the Americas - has changed. In victory, let’s say the Bahama/Caribbean islands are freed from British rule. Slavery in the americas will also never be able to get the foothold it does, historically.

With a free nation actively willing to target slave plantations and ships sitting between it and Africa, the colonial slave trade is finished. Now sure, they could use the existing slaves, but it would be oh-so-easy for the Pirates and Maroons, alongside their hopeful new Native and abolitionist allies, to target large plantations and cripple them.

If slavery never gets a foothold in the south, northern colonies never build the banks and mills and economic powerhouses that profit from the cheap produce, and most find another way to survive. Perhaps, if we’re going really all out, they start working with the native americans - learning ways to cultivate and grow crops with the land and in balance, rather than clearing thousands of acres for damaging cash crops.

I want to be really, really clear about this because it is incredibly important. Without slavery, the British empire would not have bee able to sustain itself. It would not have the power. And the more it tried to tax the colonists to recoup its losses, the angrier those people were likely to get, and perhaps join the Maroons and Pirates, or perhaps evens start the american revolution early - maybe even with the help of the newly independent Jamaican/Bahaman island nations.

This break in the power of colonial empires would shift world history into something unrecognizable as we know it. The empires would still exist, of course, but they would be set on their heels - France and Spain would see what happened to Britain and be less inclined to keep slavery legal in their own colonies. Power is split more evenly among the world, and indigenous and black/African nations are not wiped out in genocidal bids for power.

Which brings me to India. If the Indian rebellions learned of what happened in America and the Bahamas, or if america had drained enough of britain’s resources that the British East India Trading Company was not able to be as controlling of the area, this could have meant independence centuries earlier, as well as a much easier path to independence. Think about what could have been if the Indian people had been able to oust a struggling empire from its shores an entire century before it historically did.

(This bad boy is Mangal Pandey, who led the first major Indian revolution in the mid 1800s. In the movie adaptation his boyfriend best friend is played by Toby Stephens so I’m connecting the dots.)

Once the colonies of America and India are gone, Britain loses almost the entirety of its colonial power. (And this isn’t even including all the smaller colonies which could cloak their own independence in these big revolutions and the lack of (as much) of an indigenous genocide in many of these places. The economic disparity that defines Black experience in places that the British colonial system touched never gets a hold, and they are able to build their own economies in ways that benefit them and the places they live.

Think about the wealth of culture in ALL nations that would not have been destroyed, had Britain not been allowed to swallow whole swaths of land whole.

And, look. I know this is fiction. I know that of course, none of this happened, and that Black Sails is a fictional landscape. I know that so many things could go differently than I imagine them. I know that to extrapolate like this relies heavily on actually caring about a world that is completely different from ours and envisioning how that could come about.

I also know, that it is just as important to tell these sorts of stories as telling stories about how small acts could have changed things immensely, as it is to tell them about how society must stay the same. It is just as important to tell stories about ‘what if colonialism were able to be stopped’ as it is to tell dystopian stories about the end of the world. It may not be as much fun, but it is important to remember that our power doesn’t lie an indiscernible amount of time in the future, after the world has already gone to shit. It lies with us, right now. And that even if it is hard to see, our actions have the power to shape history.

Top 8 Places To Passage In 2021

The country isn't at this time challenging vaccination or negative test results and is only quarantining those who arrive by blue, not by air. Completing a health pass form is challenged, and you must have confirmation of expedition medical insurance. Anticipate following all protocols like mask-wearing and social distancing.

2/New Mexico

One of the most overlooked commonwealths in theU.S., New Mexico has some of the wildest and consummate beautiful land in the southwest. It's home to excursionist must-sees like Carlsbad Caverns and the Petroglyph National Monument. There are also quirky emplacements like Roswell, the UFO capital of the world, and Los Alamos, where the bitsy bummer was developed. Beautiful commands range from the desert to the snow- circumscribed mountains, and there are beaucoup resorts assembled around natural hot springs. In short, you can get a whole range of breaks in just one brief stop.

3/Hawaii

Hawaii has always been a top destination, and therefore much of its gain comes from the rubberneck trade. Locking down for the murrain has brought the state a lot of Croesus. But they've also managed to keep a lid on spreading the toxin. You can visit Hawaii with a negative PCR Covid-19 test, or be prepared to spend 10 days quarantined in your hospice room. The great thing about visiting Hawaii now, nonetheless, is that there won’t be huge crowds. This will give you a more private experience and you’ll get another particular attention.

4/Caribbean Isles

Want to get that sun/ brine/ froth fix but leave theU.S.? The Caribbean isles are just the spot. After many rough days between the murrain and kitchen-sink hurricanes, the isles are back up for business. The rules for entering the countries depend on who’s in charge. Some isles are Dutch, French, or English, and some are independent nations like Jamaica. Fortunately, there are limited places in the Caribbean that bear added than a negative Covid-19 test or attestation of vaccination. Beaucoup of these countries will test you upon advent. But once that’s out of the way, there are beaucoup cloistered bungalow lots available for social distancing in a tropical paradise.

5/Thailand

Thailand is one of the first Southeast Asian countries to open up for tourism. Phuket is listed to drop any encompassment necessaries beginning in July, and other points will follow thereafter. Thailand is considerably dependent on tourism for its thrift and is eager to get back to business. It's a perfect nature aficionado’s destination. All you need to enter the country besides your passport is substantiation of vaccination or former Covid infection. (This means you need factual substantiation of having had the distemper anteriorly.) Otherwise, you must cling to testing and quarantining necessaries. Just multitudinous hours out from New York’s JFK airport, Iceland is an inchmeal popular destination for good reasons.

7/French Polynesia

Just an eight-hour airplane trip from San Francisco or Los Angeles, the islets of Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea renewed to sightseers in May and are awaiting to do well. U.S. sightseers to these islets face no visa or incarceration restrictions at this time, but there are Covid testing necessities before departure, upon coming, and on day four of your visit. You're needed not travel internationally for 30 days before your visit, and you must fill out an online ETIS form before you go.

In an encouraging move to sightseers, Tahiti has initiated a Common Cancellation policy until November 1. This means that if your trip is canceled due to an unanticipated lockdown or a positive test result, they will waive the change and cancellation figures ordinarily laid.

8/Kenya

Legion corridor of Africa is still bumbling with containing the coronavirus. But Kenya is one African country that has done a good job getting its tourism husbandry going again. The country does challenge negative test results within 96 hours of advent, and you need a visa to enter the country in addition to your passport.

While Kenya is still under legion protocols for coronavirus, cognate as curfews, and limited internal gatherings, the wide-open spaces are still out there. And with resorts operating at one-third capacity, your rubberneck bones will go a long way and you have legion additional options.

My tamales must be getting cold. Almost as soon as the thought strikes me, it’s whisked away on the breeze passing through the boat. Other tajineras drift by us. They float lazily in the river like driftwood. A woman with a silver braid inches closer in her ramshackle tajinera. Virgins of Guadalupe, medallions, and bundles of cilantro are piled up beside her. This very scene could have been taking place decades ago, even a century ago. Before the influx of zinc-nosed, safari hatted-gringos with our penchant for street tacos and Che Guevara t-shirts. What was Xochimilco like before us? I stare at the woman, looking for an answer. Did I have a right to be here? I get so caught up in my thoughts that I forget all about the tamales.

The next tajinera to pass by is loaded down with bouquets of mango florets. Dark red peels are shaved off in a single flourish. The bright orange flesh that remains is transformed into a blossom with the tip of a knife. Juicy petals glisten in the sun. For the coup de grâce, a skewer is inserted at the base with a torero’s precision. Each mango is baptized with chile, salt, and lime before it is passed from boat to boat until it reaches its new owner.

Ten pesos later and I’m holding my own mango flower. I pluck off the first petals and turn to one of my dining companions. “How old d’you think the guy rowing this boat is?”

“Mmm. Maybe 15,” Axidi says.

I’m hoping this is just a summer job at that the boy is going back to school in the fall. I think about bringing this up, but reason that labor politics isn’t the most appropriate subject of conversation for a relaxing boat ride.

Little waves lapping the bow of the boat eat up the silence between us. The remnants of my mango flower are withering on my empty plate. We spot a patch of land ahead with what appears to be a dock jutting out into water. This is a chinampa, a floating garden. Designed by the Olmecs 2,000 years ago, each chinampa is host to a milpa. Food is grown on the milpas in a polycrop system, which makes it a fully sustainable farm. Someone once told me the chinampas could feed all 20 million inhabitants of Mexico City, if utilized properly. But people buy their groceries at Walmart instead.

“My dad sold corn in the D.F. when he was a kid.” Axidi isn’t looking at me. Her eyes are focused on the chinampa ahead, but I know she’s talking to me.

“He did?”

“Yeah, from the time he was six until high school. On the streets, you know? My parents didn’t have a lot of money growing up. I guess that’s why they went to the U.S. Anyway, I just mean, when you asked that, it made me think about how that could have been my dad. Or if we had stayed in Mexico, it could have been my brother.” She adjusts her sunglasses and fusses with the straw in her agua de jamaica.

“That must be a lot to think about.”

“Yeah, like, my dad sold corn on the street right here and now I go to boarding school and study abroad and shit. My parents can’t even come back here in case they got caught. They don’t have their papers, you know?”

“Yeah.” We stare at the cold tamales between us.

“My mom told me all the girls go on the pill before they leave Mexico because everyone gets raped before the border. Did you know that?” Her eyes meet mine. I shake my head.

“I don’t know why I told you that,” she continues. “It’s just so weird. I’m here and they’re back in California. I’ve just been thinking about it a lot. It’s like coming home, but it’s not your home. You know?”

Clouds roll in and the umbrellas come out. I want to say something that lets her know I care, but that I’m not assuming I know what it’s like to be the child of Mexican immigrants in Trump’s America. I want to close the space between us somehow. I want to tell her that I’ve been looking for my home for a long, long time. I stay quiet.

“Painting reminds me of him,” Axidi calls back to me as we file out of the boat and onto the chinampa. “He started a painting and construction business back in the U.S. Isn’t that such a stereotype?” She laughs.

I know she’s referring to the volunteer work we’ve been doing back in Guanajuato. We’re painting an albergue, a shelter, for families who have loved ones in the hospital nearby. Each day, after we put on the final coat, we wear our paint stains out the door like medals. We want to feel that we have done something good and lasting. When we go home to our host families at night, we reluctantly peel the mustard yellow splotches off our skin. “Hoy fue duro. Pero hicimos mucho,” we announce at the dinner table. Today was hard. But we got a lot done.

The paint is already starting to chip by the time we finish the service project.

My fingers wrap around a scythe. It’s the first time I’ve ever held one. I test the weight in my hand. Light.

Our backs are bent low over the rows and rows of plants. Hands pass me a bundle of fresh-cut lavender. I remove the stems below the flowers and pass it on to other hands, which will tie it with twine. A bee lands on my sleeve. I stop snapping the stems and steady my breathing to hear it buzz.

I think back to the last time I had my hands in the dirt. Before college, surely. Most likely before high school. I remember our 8th grade class adopting a highway and plucking weeds from the medians. My small fists clamped around dandelions. I remember summer camp by the lake, covered in algae after a swim. I remember killing tomatoes, onions, and chives the summer I decided to become self-sufficient, to live off the land.

But everything about this is different. My body feels strong and right next to so many others under the sun.

“Tomemos un descanso,” a voice calls out.

For our break, we crowd into someone’s kitchen, waiting to try our hand at making tortillas. The comal sizzles with each slab of masa. Mine comes out a little lopsided, but I like it. I put a pumpkin flower inside and eat it so hot that it burns my mouth.

The woman who is teaching us how to make tortillas is named Señora Simona. She has 22 children.

“We started the community 34 years ago,” she begins her charla. “We left the old ranch because they treated us badly. When we got here, we had no water, no food, no nothing.”

“Where did you sleep?” someone asks.

“Wherever we could. They beat us bad those first few days. But we stayed.” She slaps another tortilla onto the comal. “Y, pues, eso.” And that’s that.

From talking to one of her children, I piece together this narrative:

The farmers were promised the land they worked on back at their old ranch, but the government decided to give it to another patrón instead. So the workers chose to leave and to found their own community instead of remaining on that land and continuing to be indentured servants.

Years later, they started the Lavender Project to help solve the emigration crisis. The idea was to provide jobs to community members so they wouldn’t have to cross the border into the U.S. in search of steady work. They chose lavender because it does well in the market and the plants can survive without a lot of water, which is one thing they don’t have. The community doesn’t have any potable water and the water they do have is contaminated with arsenic. A decade ago, eight women built cisterns for every family in the community that wanted one. Now they can collect rainwater to drink. The only problem is that with climate change, it’s been raining less and less, so now they’re facing another challenge.

I taste the sweat on my lips as I take a swig of my Dasani.

After the talk, we’re taken to the shed where lavender oil is produced from the dried bundles hanging above us. We are led through the lavender’s life cycle – planting, harvesting, and distillation. We learn about the different types of lavender. Lavanda dulce is for the kitchen while lavanda de groso is destined for perfumes and soaps.

Our volunteer work for the afternoon consists of making lavender soap. When we cut the bars of soap in the backroom, our hands work in unison. One hand holds a knife to cut the large blocks as another shaves off the rough edges, while still other hands work the leftover shavings into shining globes. The air is heady with the scent of lavender and rosemary. We take deep breaths and puff our bellies out on the inhale. We smile at each other. We are proud of our sore muscles and our sunburns.

When we get back to the U.S., we will write about this moment on résumés and in travel blogs. We will talk about the month we spent volunteering in Mexico on dates and during interviews. We will forget Sra. Simona’s name. We will think about starting a fundraiser to buy more cisterns for her community, but we will forget about it over the ensuing weeks. We will forget how to make tortillas and how to hold a scythe. We will forget what it’s like to run out of drinking water for the day. But we will remember the sticky feeling of lavender on our sunburnt skin.

After we finish with the soap, we log how many bars we made into the book and clean up our work stations. We turn off the lights and take off our purple-stained aprons. We go back to our homestays and pack our bags to leave in the morning. Today was hard, we think. But we got a lot done.
